The evolution toward prospective sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks is expected to significantly increase user density, bandwidth demand, and architectural complexity, reinforcing the need for scalable multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) deployments. In this context, two fundamentally different design strategies have emerged: scaling up centralized antenna arrays and scaling out distributed cooperative infrastructures. This paper presents a system-level comparative benchmark of scale-up and scale-out MIMO architectures under identical operating conditions of three representative downlink deployments: centralized Massive MIMO, centralized XL-Massive MIMO, and distributed Cell-Free MIMO. All architectures are assessed under identical urban channel conditions, transmit power, bandwidth, and traffic assumptions, considering sub-6 GHz (3.5 GHz) and millimeter-wave (28 GHz) frequency bands as proxies for 5G and prospective 6G operation. A unified Monte Carlo simulation framework is employed to jointly evaluate aggregate throughput, spectral efficiency, coverage performance, interference behavior, and energy efficiency over a wide range of user densities and service radii. The results highlight the distinct architectural trade-offs between centralized and distributed deployments: XL-Massive MIMO maximizes aggregate throughput and spatial reuse in dense hotspot scenarios, whereas Cell-Free MIMO provides superior coverage uniformity and improved energy efficiency in wide-area deployments. By isolating the impact of architectural scaling under consistent assumptions, the presented benchmark offers quantitative guidance for 6G network design and deployment planning. Full article

Accurate channel estimation is critical for enabling effective directional beamforming and spectrally efficient transmission in beamspace massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. However, conventional model-driven algorithms are derived from idealized mathematical models and typically suffer severe performance degradation under model mismatches caused by complex and nonideal propagation environments. Although data-driven deep learning (DL) approaches can learn channel characteristics from data, they typically require large-scale training datasets and demonstrate limited generalization capability. To overcome these limitations, we propose a model-data hybrid-driven network (MD-HDN) scheme to address the wideband beamspace channel estimation problem. In the MD-HDN scheme, we unfold the vector approximate message passing (VAMP) algorithm into a trainable network, where a novel shrinkage function is introduced to enhance the estimation accuracy. Extensive numerical results confirm that the proposed MD-HDN scheme can significantly outperform existing schemes under various signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and achieve substantial improvements in both estimation accuracy and robustness. Millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) systems are a cornerstone technology for integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) in sixth-generation (6G) mobile networks. These systems provide high-capacity backhaul while simultaneously enabling high-resolution environmental sensing. However, accurate channel estimation remains highly challenging due to intrinsic noise sensitivity and clustered sparse multipath structures. These challenges are particularly severe under limited pilot resources and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions. To address these difficulties, this paper proposes HASwinNet, a deep learning (DL) framework designed for mmWave channel denoising. The framework integrates a hierarchical Swin Transformer encoder for structured representation learning. It further incorporates two complementary branches. The first branch performs sparse token extraction guided by angular-domain significance. The second branch focuses on angular-domain refinement by applying discrete Fourier transform (DFT), squeeze-and-excitation (SE), and inverse DFT (IDFT) operations. This generates a mask that highlights angularly coherent features. A decoder combines the outputs of both branches with a residual projection from the input to yield refined channel estimates. Additionally, we introduce an angular-domain perceptual loss during training. This enforces spectral consistency and preserves clustered multipath structures. Simulation results based on the Saleh–Valenzuela (S–V) channel model demonstrate that HASwinNet achieves significant improvements in normalized mean squared error (NMSE) and bit error rate (BER). It consistently outperforms convolutional neural network (CNN), long short-term memory (LSTM), and U-Net baselines. Furthermore, experiments with reduced pilot symbols confirm that HASwinNet effectively exploits angular sparsity. The model retains a consistent advantage over baselines even under pilot-limited conditions. These findings validate the scalability of HASwinNet for practical 6G mmWave backhaul applications. They also highlight its potential in ISAC scenarios where accurate channel recovery supports both communication and sensing. Full article

Future internet of things (IoT) services necessitate the integration of sensing and communication functions within the same system, utilizing digital twin (DT) technology. Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) can address the need for widespread communication and high-precision sensing by leveraging the benefits of spectrum and hardware resource sharing. The DT represents a promising technology for achieving low latency and high energy efficiency, leveraging real-time monitoring, optimization, and predictive maintenance capabilities. Recent advancements in DT and ISAC for IoT systems research necessitate the establishment of effective communication technology methods between the physical entity and its digital representation. Most prior research reviews have not sufficiently explored the critical enabling technologies for DT and ISAC applications in IoT systems that facilitate communication between a physical entity and its digital counterparts. Previous research has primarily focused on the application of DT technology in IoT systems; however, little emphasis has been placed on the integration of ISAC technology with DT in IoT systems, as well as the important integrated sensing and communication technologies between physical entities and their digital counterparts. This paper presents a systematic literature review that focuses on the analysis of key communication technologies that facilitate connections in DT and ISAC for IoT systems. The implications of communication methods derived from the study are presented, focusing on technologies such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), millimeter wave (mmWave), and massive MIMO (mMIMO) technologies. The emphasis on these technologies is due to their significance as essential enablers of integrated sensing and communication between physical entities and their digital counterparts. Furthermore, these technologies are critical for integrating DT and ISAC into the IoT systems to efficiently meet the needs of IoT services. Future discussions are finally addressing open research and the challenges that demand attention. Full article

This paper proposes an efficient sparse channel estimation method for millimeter wave (mmWave) hybrid multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The performance of orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) and its advanced variants—generalized OMP (GOMP), simultaneous OMP (SOMP), and regularized OMP (ROMP)—is evaluated based on normalized mean square error (NMSE) and computational complexity. A new hybrid GOMP–ROMP algorithm is proposed to achieve faster convergence and lower computational costs while maintaining the desired estimation accuracy. Simulation results reveal that the proposed algorithm reduces NMSE by 0.040823 compared to OMP and attains ROMP’s accuracy with significantly less complexity. For a MIMO system with 32 ×32 configuration, the method offers up to a fourfold reduction in computational complexity compared to OMP, ROMP, and SOMP. These findings highlight the potential of the hybrid algorithm for real-time mmWave massive MIMO applications in fifth-generation (5G) and sixth-generation (6G) systems, where high bandwidth and low latency are essential. To enhance the spectral efficiency of hybrid beamforming in millimeter-wave massive MIMO systems, the problem is formulated as a high-dimensional non-convex optimization under constant modulus constraints. A novel algorithm based on fourth-order tensor Tucker decomposition is proposed. Specifically, the frequency-domain channel matrices are structured into a fourth-order tensor to explicitly capture the couplings across the spatial, frequency, and user domains. To tackle the non-convexity induced by constant modulus constraints, the analog precoder and combiner are derived by solving a truncated-rank Tucker decomposition problem through the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers and Alternating Least Squares schemes. Subsequently, in the digital domain, the Regularized Block Diagonalization algorithm is integrated with the subcarrier and user factor matrices—obtained from the tensor decomposition—along with the water-filling strategy to design the digital precoder and combiner, thereby achieving a balance between multi-user interference suppression and noise enhancement. The proposed tensor-based algorithm is demonstrated through simulations to outperform existing state-of-the-art schemes. This work provides an efficient and mathematically sound solution for hybrid beamforming in dense multi-user scenarios envisioned for sixth-generation mobile communications. Full article

Integrated Sensing And Communication (ISAC) has been applied to the Internet of Things (IoT) network as a promising 6G technology due to its ability to enhance spectrum utilization and reduce resource consumption, making it ideal for high-precision sensing applications. However, while the introduction of millimeter Wave (mmWave) and massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) technologies can enhance the performance of ISAC systems, they extend the near-field region, rendering traditional channel parameter estimation algorithms ineffective due to the spherical wavefront channel model. Aiming to address the challenge, we propose a tensor-based channel parameter estimation and localization algorithm for the near-field mmWave massive MIMO-Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) ISAC systems. Firstly, the received signal at the User Terminal (UT) is constructed as a third-order tensor to retain the multi-dimensional features of the data. Then, the proposed tensor-based algorithm achieves the channel parameter estimation and target localization by exploiting the second-order Taylor expansion and intrinsic structure of tensor factor matrices. Furthermore, the Cramér–Rao Bounds (CRBs) of channel parameters and position are derived to establish the lower bound of errors. Simulation results show that the proposed tensor-based algorithm is superior compared to the existing algorithms in terms of channel parameter estimation and localization accuracy in ISAC systems for IoT network, achieving errors that approach the CRBs. Specifically, the proposed algorithm attains a 79.8% improvement in UT positioning accuracy compared to suboptimal methods at SNR = 5 dB. Full article

The use of low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) in receivers has emerged as an effective solution for reducing power consumption in millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) systems. However, low-resolution ADCs also pose significant challenges for channel estimation. To address this issue, we propose a joint uplink/downlink (UL/DL) channel estimation algorithm that utilizes the spatial reciprocity of frequency division duplex (FDD) to improve the estimation of quantized UL channels. Quantified UL/DL channels are concentrated at the BS for joint estimation. This estimation problem is regarded as a compressed sensing problem with finite bits, which has led to the development of expectation-maximization-based quantitative generalized approximate messaging (EM-QGAMP) algorithms. In the expected step, QGAMP is used for posterior estimation of sparse channel coefficients, and the block maximization minimization (MM) algorithm is introduced in the maximization step to improve the estimation accuracy. Finally, simulation results verified the robustness of the proposed EM-QGAMP algorithm, and the proposed algorithm’s NMSE (normalized mean squared error) outperforms traditional methods by over 90% and recent state-of-the-art techniques by 30%. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) and massive multiple input and multiple output (M-MIMO) are the two major enabling technologies for next-generation networks, capable of providing spectral efficiency (SE), energy efficiency (EE), array gain, spatial multiplexing, and reliability. This work introduces an RIS-assisted millimeter wave (mmWave) M-MIMO system to harvest the advantages of RIS and mmWave M-MIMO systems that are required for beyond fifth-generation (B5G) systems. The performance of the proposed system is evaluated under 3GPP TR 38.901 V16.1.0 5G channel models. Specifically, we considered indoor hotspot (InH)—indoor office and urban microcellular (UMi)—street canyon channel environments for 28 GHz and 73 GHz mmWave frequencies. Using the SimRIS channel simulator, the channel matrices were generated for the required number of realizations. Monte Carlo simulations were executed extensively to evaluate the proposed system’s average bit error rate (ABER) and sum rate performances, and it was observed that increasing the number of transmit antennas from 4 to 64 resulted in a better performance gain of ∼10 dB for both InH—indoor office and UMi—street canyon channel environments. The improvement of the number of RIS elements from 64 to 1024 resulted in ∼7 dB performance gain. It was also observed that ABER performance at 28 GHz was better compared to 73 GHz by at least ∼5 dB for the considered channels. The impact of finite resolution RIS on the considered 5G channel models was also evaluated. ABER performance degraded for 2-bit finite resolution RIS compared to ideal infinite resolution RIS by ∼6 dB. Full article

This paper proposes a source encoding rate control and cross-layer data stream allocation scheme for uplink millimeter-wave (mmWave) multi-user massive MIMO (MU-mMIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) hybrid beamforming video communication systems. Unlike most previous studies that focus on the downlink scenario, our proposed scheme optimizes the uplink transmission while also addressing the limitation of prior works that only consider single-data-stream users. A key distinction of our approach is the integration of cross-layer resource allocation, which jointly considers both the physical layer channel state information (CSI) and the application layer video rate-distortion (RD) function. While traditional methods optimize for spectral efficiency (SE), our proposed method directly maximizes the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) to enhance video quality, aligning with the growing demand for high-quality video communication. We introduce a novel iterative cross-layer dynamic data stream allocation scheme, where the initial allocation is based on conventional physical-layer data stream allocation, followed by iterative refinement. Through multiple iterations, users with lower PSNR can dynamically contend for data streams, leading to a more balanced and optimized resource allocation. Our approach is a general framework that can incorporate any existing physical-layer data stream allocation as an initialization step before iteration. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed cross-layer scheme outperforms three conventional physical-layer schemes by 0.4 to 1.14 dB in PSNR for 4–6 users, at the cost of a 1.8 to 2.3× increase in computational complexity (requiring 3.6–5.8 iterations). The emergence of 5G technology promises remarkable advancements in wireless communication, particularly in the realm of mmWave (millimeter-wave) massive multiple input multiple output (m-MIMO) systems. However, the realization of its full potential is hindered by the challenge of pilot overhead, which compromises system efficiency. The efficient usage of pilot signals is crucial for precise channel estimation and interference reduction to maintain data integrity. Nevertheless, this requirement brings up the challenge of pilot overhead, which utilizes precious spectrum space, thus reducing spectral efficiency (SE). To address this obstacle, researchers have progressively turned to artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) methods to design hybrid beam-forming systems that enhance SE while reducing changes to the bit error rate (BER). This study addresses the challenge of pilot overhead in hybrid beamforming for 5G mmWave m-MIMO systems by leveraging advanced artificial intelligence (AI) techniques. We propose a framework integrating k-clustering, linear regression, random forest regression, and neural networks with singular value decomposition (NN-SVD) to optimize pilot placement and hybrid beamforming strategies. The results demonstrate an 82% reduction in pilot overhead, a 250% improvement in spectral efficiency, and a tenfold enhancement in bit error rate at low SNR conditions, surpassing state-of-the-art methods. These findings validate the efficacy of the proposed system in advancing next-generation wireless networks. Full article

High route loss and line-of-sight requirements are two of the fundamental challenges of millimeter-wave (mm-wave) communications that are mitigated by incorporating sensor technology. Sensing gives the deep reinforcement learning (DRL) agent comprehensive environmental feedback, which helps it better predict channel fluctuations and modify beam patterns accordingly. For multi-user massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) systems, hybrid precoding requires sophisticated real-time low-complexity power allocation (PA) approaches to achieve near-optimal capacity. This study presents a unique angular-based hybrid precoding (AB-HP) framework that minimizes radio frequency (RF) chain and channel estimation while optimizing energy efficiency (EE) and spectral efficiency (SE). DRL is essential for mm-wave technology to make adaptive and intelligent decision-making possible, which effectively transforms wireless communication systems. DRL optimizes RF chain usage to maintain excellent SE while drastically lowering hardware complexity and energy consumption in an AB-HP architecture by dynamically learning optimal precoding methods using environmental angular information. This article proposes enabling dual optimization of EE and SE while drastically lowering beam training overhead by incorporating maximum reward beam training driven (RBT) in the DRL. The proposed RBT-DRL improves system performance and flexibility by dynamically modifying the number of active RF chains in dynamic network situations. The simulation results show that RBT-DRL-driven beam training guarantees good EE performance for mobile users while increasing SE in mm-wave structures. Even though total power consumption rises by 45%, the SE improves by 39%, increasing from 14 dB to 20 dB, suggesting that this strategy could successfully achieve a balance between performance and EE in upcoming B5G networks. The advent of millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, coupled with reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), presents a significant opportunity for advancing wireless communication technologies. This integration enhances data transmission rates and broadens coverage areas, but challenges in channel estimation (CE) remain due to the limitations of the signal processing capabilities of RIS. To address this, we propose an adaptive channel estimation framework comprising two algorithms: log-sum normalized least mean squares (Log-Sum NLMS) and hybrid normalized least mean squares-normalized least mean fourth (Hybrid NLMS-NLMF). These algorithms leverage the sparse nature of mmWave channels to improve estimation accuracy. The Log-Sum NLMS algorithm incorporates a log-sum penalty in its cost function for faster convergence, while the Hybrid NLMS-NLMF employs a mixed error function for better performance across varying signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions. Our analysis also reveals that both algorithms have lower computational complexity compared to existing methods. Extensive simulations validate our findings, with results illustrating the performance of the proposed algorithms under different parameters, demonstrating significant improvements in channel estimation accuracy and convergence speed over established methods, including NLMS, sparse exponential forgetting window least mean square (SEFWLMS), and sparse hybrid adaptive filtering algorithms (SHAFA).
