Resilient autonomous inter-Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) communication is critical for applications like drone swarms. While conventional Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based beamforming is effective at long ranges, it suffers from significant pointing errors at close range due to latency, low update rates and the inherent GNSS positioning error. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes a novel hybrid beamforming system that enhances resilience by adaptively switching between two methods. For short-range operations, our system leverages Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR)–camera sensor fusion for high-accuracy, low-latency UAV tracking, enabling precise millimeter-wave (mmWave) beamforming. For long-range scenarios beyond the camera’s detection limit, it intelligently switches to a GNSS-based method. The switching threshold is determined by considering both the sensor’s effective range and the pointing errors caused by GNSS latency and a UAV velocity. Simulations conducted in a realistic urban model demonstrate that our hybrid approach compensates for the weaknesses of each individual method. It maintains a stable, high-throughput link across a wide range of distances, achieving superior performance and resilience compared to systems relying on a single tracking method. This paves the way for advanced autonomous drone network operations in dynamic environments. Full article

This paper investigates an integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system operating in a rainfall scenario, where a base station (BS) simultaneously serves multiple communication users and performs rainfall detection. Specifically, considering the fading characteristics of the millimeter-wave (mmWave) channel and the impact of rainfall on the signal propagation link, we adopt the Weibull distribution as the channel model between the nodes. Based on the above, the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), channel capacity, bit error rate (BER), and outage probability of the users within the system are analyzed to characterize the communication performance. Furthermore, the sensing capability of the BS is demonstrated through the analysis of the probability of rainfall. Simulation results reveal that increasing the distance between the BS and users significantly degrades their communication performance. Furthermore, the performance is highly sensitive to the rainfall intensity. Specifically, compared to storm conditions, light rain yields an improvement of 16.9 dB in the average user SNR, a 7.2 bps/Hz increase in channel capacity, and a 40.2% reduction in the outage probability. Additionally, an increase in the complex dielectric constant of raindrops substantially reduces the backscattering coefficient at the ISAC BS. Full article

This paper presents a bistatic 60 GHz frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar system for non-contact heart rate monitoring, utilizing high-gain Fabry–Perot cavity (FPC) antennas at both the transmitter and receiver. Each FPC antenna integrates a partially reflective surface (PRS) and a metallic ground plane to form a resonant cavity. Compared to conventional patch arrays of the same aperture, the FPC antenna improves the antenna gain from 4.1 dBi to 8.1 dBi at the transmitter and from 3.9 dBi to 7.8 dBi at the receiver, resulting in an overall link budget enhancement of approximately 7.9 dB. This dual high-gain configuration theoretically increases the maximum detection range by a factor of 2.48. The proposed radar system was implemented and experimentally validated under indoor conditions using both calibration targets and human participants. Active measurement results confirm that the bistatic radar equipped with FPC antennas extends the reliable heart rate detection distance by approximately 2.27 times compared to a conventional system, closely matching the theoretical prediction. These results confirm the practicality and effectiveness of FPC antennas in extending both the range and reliability of millimeter-wave vital sign detection systems. Full article

Modern healthcare systems are under growing strain from aging populations, urbanization, and rising chronic disease burdens, creating an urgent need for real-time monitoring and informed decision-making. This survey examines how the convergence of Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) and digital-twin technologies can meet that need by analyzing how ISAC unifies sensing and communication to gather and transmit data with high timeliness and reliability and how digital-twin platforms use these streams to maintain continuously updated virtual replicas of patients, devices, and care environments. Our synthesis compares ISAC frequency options across sub-6 GHz, millimeter-wave, and terahertz bandswith respect to resolution, penetration depth, exposure compliance, maturity, and cost, and it discusses joint waveform design and emerging 6G architectures. It also presents reference architecture patterns that connect heterogeneous clinical sensors to ISAC links, data ingestion, semantic interoperability pipelines using Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) and IEEE 11073, and digital-twin synchronization, and it catalogs clinical and operational applications, together with validation and integration requirements. We conduct a targeted scoping review of peer-reviewed literature indexed in major scholarly databases between January 2015 and July 2025, with inclusion restricted to English-language, peer-reviewed studies already cited by this survey, and we apply a transparent screening and data extraction procedure to support reproducibility. The survey further reviews clinical opportunities enabled by data-synchronized twins, including personalized therapy planning, proactive early-warning systems, and virtual intervention testing, while outlining the technical, clinical, and organizational hurdles that must be addressed. Finally, we examine workflow adaptation; governance and ethics; provider training; and outcome measurement frameworks such as length of stay, complication rates, and patient satisfaction, and we conclude that by highlighting both the integration challenges and the operational upside, this survey offers a foundation for the development of safe, ethical, and scalable data-driven healthcare models. The emergence of 6G wireless systems marks a paradigm shift toward intelligent, context-aware networks that can adapt in real-time to their environment. Within this landscape, Sensing-Assisted Communication (SAC) emerges as a key enabler, integrating perception into the communication control loop to enhance reliability, beamforming accuracy, and system responsiveness. Unlike prior surveys that treat SAC as a subfunction of Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC), this work offers the first dedicated review of SAC in Millimeter-Wave (mmWave) and Sub-Terahertz (Sub-THz) systems, where directional links and channel variability present core challenges. SAC encompasses a diverse set of methods that enable wireless systems to dynamically adapt to environmental changes and channel conditions in real time. Recent studies demonstrate up to 80% reduction in beam training overhead and significant gains in latency and mobility resilience. Applications include predictive beamforming, blockage mitigation, and low-latency Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and vehicular communication. This review unifies the SAC landscape and outlines future directions in standardization, Artificial Intelligence (AI) integration, and cooperative sensing for next-generation wireless networks. With the rapid evolution of 5G wireless communications, millimeter-wave (mmWave) technology has become a crucial enabler for high-speed, low-latency, and large-scale connectivity. As the critical interface for signal transmission, mmWave antennas directly affect system performance, reliability, and application scope. This paper reviews the current state of mmWave antenna technologies in 5G systems, focusing on antenna types, design considerations, and integration strategies. We discuss how the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) architectures and advanced beamforming techniques enhance system capacity and link robustness. State-of-the-art integration methods, such as antenna-in-package (AiP) and chip-level integration, are examined for their importance in achieving compact and high-performance mmWave systems. Material selection and fabrication technologies—including low-loss substrates like polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), hydrocarbon-based materials, liquid crystal polymer (LCP), and microwave dielectric ceramics, as well as emerging processes such as low-temperature co-fired ceramics (LTCC), 3D printing, and micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS)—are also analyzed. Key challenges include propagation path limitations, power consumption and thermal management in highly integrated systems, cost–performance trade-offs for mass production, and interoperability standardization across vendors. Finally, we outline future research directions, including intelligent beam management, reconfigurable antennas, AI-driven designs, and hybrid mmWave–sub-6 GHz systems, highlighting the vital role of mmWave antennas in shaping next-generation wireless networks. Vehicular communication is crucial for the future of intelligent transportation systems. However, providing continuous high-data-rate connectivity for vehicles in hard-to-reach areas, such as highways, rural regions, and disaster zones, is challenging, as deploying ground base stations (BSs) is either infeasible or too costly. In this paper, multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) using millimeter-wave (mmWave) bands are proposed to deliver high-data-rate and secure communication links to vehicles. This is due to UAVs’ ability to fly, hover, and maneuver, and to mmWave properties of high data rate and security, enabled by beamforming capabilities. In this scenario, the vehicle should autonomously select the optimal UAV to maximize its achievable data rate and ensure long coverage periods so as to reduce the frequency of UAV handovers, while considering the UAVs’ battery lives. However, predicting UAVs’ coverage periods and optimizing mmWave beam directions are challenging, since no prior information is available about UAVs’ positions, speeds, or altitudes. To overcome this, out-of-band communication using orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS) modulation is employed to enable the vehicle to estimate UAVs’ speeds and positions by assessing channel state information (CSI) in the Delay-Doppler (DD) domain. This information is used to predict maximum coverage periods and optimize mmWave beamforming, allowing for the best UAV selection. Compared to other benchmarks, the proposed scheme shows significant performance in various scenarios. Full article

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) and terahertz (THz) communications are susceptible to frequent link disruptions and severe performance degradation due to high directionality, significant path loss, and sensitivity to blockages. These challenges are particularly acute in highly dynamic and densely populated user environments. The issues present significant obstacles to ensuring reliability and quality of service (QoS) in future space–air–ground integrated networks. To address these challenges, this paper proposes an adaptive transmission control scheme designed for space–air–ground integrated multi-hop networks operating in the mmWave/THz bands. By analyzing the intermittent connectivity inherent in such networks, the proposed scheme incorporates an incremental factor and a backlog indicator into its congestion control mechanism. This allows for the accurate differentiation between packet losses resulting from network congestion and those caused by channel blockages, such as human body occlusion or beam misalignment. Furthermore, the scheme optimizes the initial congestion window during the slow-start phase and dynamically adapts its transmission strategy during the congestion avoidance phase according to the identified cause of packet loss. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method effectively mitigates throughput degradation from link blockages, improves data transmission rates in highly dynamic environments, and sustains more stable end-to-end connectivity. Our proposed scheme achieves a 35% higher throughput than TCP Hybla, 40% lower latency than TCP Veno, and maintains 99.2% link utilization under high mobility. Full article

This work presents an 80 Gbps photonics-aided millimeter-wave (mm Wave) wireless communication system employing 16-Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (16-QAM) and a 1 × 2 single-input multiple-output (SIMO) architecture with maximum ratio combining (MRC) to achieve robust 87.5 GHz transmission over 4.6 km. By utilizing polarization-diverse optical heterodyne generation and spatial diversity reception, the system enhances spectral efficiency while addressing the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and channel distortions inherent in long-haul links. A blind equalization scheme combining the constant modulus algorithm (CMA) and decision-directed least mean squares (DD-LMS) filtering enables rapid convergence and suppresses residual inter-symbol interference, effectively mitigating polarization drift and phase noise. The experimental results demonstrate an SNR gain of approximately 3 dB and a significant bit error rate (BER) reduction with MRC compared to single-antenna reception, along with improved SNR performance in multi-antenna configurations. The synergy of photonic mm Wave generation, adaptive spatial diversity, and pilot-free digital signal processing (DSP) establishes a robust framework for high-capacity wireless fronthaul, overcoming atmospheric attenuation and dynamic impairments. This approach highlights the viability of 16-QAM in next-generation ultra-high-speed networks (6G/7G), balancing high data rates with resilient performance under channel degradation. Full article

Terahertz (THz) wireless communications can support ultra-high data rates and secure wireless links with miniaturized devices for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications. In this paper, a three-dimensional (3D) non-stationary geometry-based stochastic channel model (GSCM) is proposed for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication links between the UAVs in the THz band. The proposed channel model considers not only the 3D scattering and reflection scenarios (i.e., reflection and scattering fading) but also the atmospheric molecule absorption attenuation, arbitrary 3D trajectory, and antenna arrays of both terminals. In addition, the statistical properties of the proposed GSCM (i.e., the time auto-correlation function (T-ACF), space cross-correlation function (S-CCF), and Doppler power spectrum density (DPSD)) are derived and analyzed under several important UAV-related parameters and different carrier frequencies, including millimeter wave (mmWave) and THz bands. Finally, the good agreement between the simulated results and corresponding theoretical ones demonstrates the correctness of the proposed GSCM, and some useful observations are provided for the system design and performance evaluation of UAV-based air-to-air (A2A) THz-MIMO wireless communications. THz communication stands as a pivotal technology for 6G networks, designed to address the critical challenge of data demands surpassing current microwave and millimeter-wave (mmWave) capabilities. However, realizing Tbps and kilometer-range transmission confronts the “dual attenuation dilemma” comprising severe free-space path loss (FSPL) (>120 dB/km) and atmospheric absorption. This review comprehensively summarizes our group′s advancements in overcoming fundamental challenges of long-distance THz communication. Through systematic photonic–electronic co-optimization, we report key enabling technologies including photonically assisted THz signal generation, polarization-multiplexed multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with maximal ratio combining (MRC), high-gain antenna–lens configurations, and InP amplifier systems for complex weather resilience. Critical experimental milestones encompass record-breaking 1.0488 Tbps throughput using probabilistically shaped 64QAM (PS-64QAM) in the 330–500 GHz band; 30.2 km D-band transmission (18 Gbps with 543.6 Gbps·km capacity–distance product); a 3 km fog-penetrating link at 312 GHz; and high-sensitivity SIMO-validated 100 Gbps satellite-terrestrial communication beyond 36,000 km. Millimeter wave (mmWave) technology, with its ultra-high bandwidth and low latency, holds significant promise for vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications. However, it faces challenges such as high propagation losses and limited coverage in dense urban vehicular environments. Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces (IRSs) help address these issues by enhancing mmWave signal paths around obstacles, thereby maintaining reliable communication. Hybrid beamforming plays a critical role in evaluating wireless communication technology, particularly for millimeter-wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-out (MIMO) communication. Several hybrid beamforming systems are investigated for millimeter-wave multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication. The deployment of huge grant-free transmission in the millimeter-wave (mmWave) band is required due to the growing demands for spectrum resources in upcoming enormous machine-type communication applications. Ultra-high data speed, reduced latency, and improved connection are all promised by the development of 5G mmWave networks. Yet, due to severe route loss and directional communication requirements, there are substantial obstacles to transmission reliability and energy efficiency. To address this limitation in this research we present an intelligent transmission control scheme tailored to 5G mmWave networks. Transport control protocol (TCP) performance over mmWave links can be enhanced for network protocols by utilizing the mmWave scalable (mmS)-TCP. To ensure that users have the stronger average power, we suggest a novel method called row compression two-stage learning-based accurate multi-path processing network with received signal strength indicator-based association strategy (RCTS-AMP-RSSI-AS) for an estimate of both the direct and indirect channels. To change user scenarios and maintain effective communication constantly, we utilize the innovative method known as multi-user scenario-based MATD3 (Mu-MATD3). To improve performance, we introduce the novel method of “digital and analog beam training with long-short term memory (DAH-BT-LSTM)”. Finally, as optimizing network performance requires bottleneck-aware congestion reduction, the low-latency congestion control schemes (LLCCS) are proposed. The overall proposed method improves the performance of 5G mmWave networks. Full article

A plethora of feature articles, review and white papers, and roadmaps elaborate on the perspectives and research challenges of wireless systems, in general, including both unified physical and cyber space. Hence, this paper presents a comprehensive review of the technological challenges and recent advancements in wireless communication hardware that underpin the development of next-generation networks, particularly 6G. Emphasizing the physical layer, the study explores critical enabling technologies including beamforming, massive MIMO, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), millimeter-wave (mmWave) and terahertz (THz) communications, wireless power transfer, and energy harvesting. These technologies are analyzed in terms of their functional roles, implementation challenges, and integration into future wireless infrastructure. Beyond traditional physical layer components, the paper also discusses the role of reconfigurable RF front-ends, innovative antenna architectures, and user-end devices that contribute to the adaptability and efficiency of emerging communication systems. In addition, the inclusion of application-driven paradigms such as digital twins highlights how new use cases are shaping design requirements and pushing the boundaries of hardware capabilities.
