Community-based digital transformation (DX) initiatives are increasingly used to promote healthy aging, although their effects are often evaluated using subjective self-reported measures. This study aimed to quantitatively evaluate a community DX health promotion initiative with Takashimadaira as its primary target area in Japan using wearable sensor data. A total of 500 community-dwelling older adults participated in the initiative, and wearable sensor data were obtained from 355 participants during the five-month observational period. The initiative combined wearable device distribution with event-information dissemination via the messaging platform. Daily step count and heart-rate indices were analyzed. Within-participant analyses showed significant increases in daily step counts in the information-provision groups, whereas the primary linear mixed-effects model showed no significant information-provision × time interaction for daily step count. Information provision was associated with differences in mean and minimum daily heart rate in cross-sectional analyses. Adherence and dropout also varied by residential area. Age, BMI, and exercise frequency were associated with several health-related indices, but these associations were not interpreted as evidence of wearable measurement validity. These findings demonstrate the potential utility of using wearable sensor data to evaluate longitudinal changes in health-related behavior and physiological signals in community-based DX initiatives, while also revealing important feasibility limitations, including substantial attrition (only 222 of 355 participants met the 14-day criterion; 90-day dropout 58.3%) and indicating that observed within-participant changes should not be interpreted as demonstrated intervention effects. Community context may also be relevant to sustained participation in such programs. Full article

Social media has become an important channel for information exchange during sudden disasters, with implications for both public-sector communication and corporate risk communication. However, limited research has examined how substantive message content and linguistic presentation jointly relate to online dissemination behaviour. This issue is also relevant to corporate risk management, as firms must respond to crises while managing stakeholder perceptions. Drawing on the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) and Construal Level Theory (CLT), this study conceptualizes information richness and relevance as central-route cues, and specificity and interactive language as peripheral linguistic cues. User involvement is introduced as a motivational condition that may change the relative weight assigned to these cues. The empirical analysis uses 51,856 Weibo posts concerning the 2025 Tibet earthquake. OLS results show that all four message characteristics are positively associated with dissemination intensity, and that user involvement strengthens the associations of content-related cues while weakening those of linguistic cues. A supplementary negative binomial regression confirms the positive associations of information richness and interactive language, as well as the key interaction patterns, though the results for information relevance and specificity are less stable. These findings extend crisis communication research by showing that disaster-information dissemination is jointly associated with substantive content, linguistic presentation, and user involvement, and offer practical implications for organizations seeking to design clearer and more adaptive risk communication. Dynamic aeronautical information is still widely disseminated through textual Notice to Air Missions (NOTAMs), while message-oriented storage cannot directly maintain the evolving states of affected objects. The objective of this study is to determine whether NOTAM-derived object events can be organized into traceable bitemporal states that support accurate and efficient current and historical access. To this end, this paper proposes BiTE, a bitemporal event-centered database framework that connects object-level event evidence, historical state versions, and materialized current-state projections. By integrating business and system time with NOTAM-specific lifecycle rules, BiTE supports state maintenance, historical reconstruction, and source traceability. A MongoDB-based prototype was evaluated using 44,591 NOTAMs from five major U.S. aerodromes. Independent manual validation showed 96.14–100% agreement across object identification and lifecycle-maintenance tasks. Across 1500 manually verified queries, BiTE achieved F1 scores of 99.43% and 98.66% for current-state and airport-overview retrieval, respectively, and a historical hit rate of 95.80%, outperforming representative message-oriented, relational-bitemporal, and RDF-based implementations. Mean query latency remained below 3.7 ms, while functionally equivalent ablations confirmed the performance contribution of the layered architecture. These results demonstrate that BiTE enables accurate, traceable, and efficient object-state management for dynamic aeronautical information. Full article

Modern connected vehicles rely on the controller area network (CAN) to disseminate safety-critical in-vehicle information, including sensor-related and vehicle-state signals such as engine revolutions per minute (RPM) and gear state, among electronic control units (ECUs). Because CANs lack built-in authentication and encryption, malicious message injection and spoofing can compromise the integrity and availability of vehicular sensing and control functions. Existing deep-learning-based intrusion-detection systems (IDSs) show a clear trade-off: supervised methods perform well on known attacks but rely on costly labels, whereas unsupervised methods can identify unseen attacks but often suffer from high false-positive rates. To address these limitations, this paper proposes a semi-supervised generative adversarial network (SGAN) framework for CAN bus intrusion detection that combines image-based CAN representation with adversarial learning. Consecutive CAN messages are converted into 64×9 grayscale images, and the proposed framework is trained in three phases. First, the discriminator establishes an initial decision boundary using a small labeled subset. It then refines this boundary through distribution-level likelihood objectives and generated samples. Finally, the generator is trained to produce realistic samples capable of deceiving the discriminator. The proposed method was evaluated on the Hacking and Countermeasure Research Lab (HCRL) car-hacking dataset using leave-one-class-out experiments to simulate unknown attacks and achieved an average accuracy of 99.73% and an average F1-score of 99.63% on unknown attacks. Moreover, with only 0.21 M parameters and 3.25 M floating-point operations (FLOPs), the model is well suited for resource-constrained in-vehicle platforms. These results indicate that the proposed framework can serve as a practical cybersecurity component for protecting CAN-carried data in vehicular sensing applications. Full article

Accurate road-event detection and timely alert message dissemination are essential for the safety of connected and automated vehicles. In many scenarios, alert messages must reach not only nearby vehicles but also remote stakeholders, such as traffic management centers, cloud services, and infrastructure operators. This requirement motivates the adoption of cellular-based communication technologies in addition to short-range vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications for data dissemination. In this work, we investigate vehicle-to-network-to-everything (V2N2X) communications for the dissemination of alert messages generated after the on-board detection of hazardous road events through machine learning (ML) algorithms. Although V2N2X connectivity is well suited for extending data dissemination beyond the local vehicular environment, its capability to guarantee prompt message delivery under strict latency constraints remains an open challenge, particularly when ML inference is integrated into the end-to-end processing pipeline. To address this issue, we develop and experimentally evaluate a proof-of-concept (PoC) platform that combines real-time road-event detection with relevant message dissemination towards both nearby and remote recipients. The proposed framework leverages 5G connectivity and publish/subscribe messaging protocols. The experimental results showcase that dissemination latency is highly influenced by both the adopted type of 5G deployment (private versus commercial networks) and the load conditions at the message broker. This article examines the utilization of WhatsApp as an alternative communication tool for disseminating visual content among social activists during protests. While WhatsApp is typically conceptualized as an interpersonal or group messaging platform, research on its role as an infrastructure for alternative media and citizen journalism remains limited. The study focuses on the “Tikva” group, established at the onset of the public struggle against the 2023 judicial reform in Israel, which evolved into a nine-month mass protest movement described as one of the largest in the country’s history. Through qualitative thematic content analysis of videos distributed within the group, the article explores how WhatsApp functions simultaneously as a channel for digital activism and as a site of bottom-up, democratic, non-institutional news production. The findings indicate two primary trends: functionally, WhatsApp operates as a mechanism for resource mobilization, calls to action in physical and digital spaces, and the cultivation of belonging and solidarity among activists facing institutional power; in terms of content and production, the videos articulate an anti-hegemonic discourse and challenge mainstream media conventions. The analysis shows how these videos dismantle delegitimizing frames and construct a counter-narrative depicting protesters as citizens defending democracy, thereby sustaining the protest movement’s momentum. Background: Public perception of environmental (natural background) radiation represents an important challenge for public health communication, as risk perception is often influenced more by information quality and institutional trust than by objective exposure levels. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 481 respondents using a structured questionnaire assessing self-perceived knowledge, information sources, perceived radiation risk, institutional trust, and health-related attitudes. Results: Significant gender differences were observed in self-reported knowledge about radioactivity, with men more frequently reporting higher knowledge levels than women (p < 0.001), while no significant differences emerged between urban and rural respondents; logistic regression analysis showed that lower perceived risk was associated with lack of medical information (OR = 0.32, 95% CI: 0.14–0.71) and absence of avoidance behavior (OR = 0.23, 95% CI: 0.11–0.47), whereas low trust in medical institutions was associated with higher odds of perceiving natural background radiation as dangerous (OR = 1.84, 95% CI: 1.21–2.80). Conclusions: Effective radiation risk communication requires more than the dissemination of information; it must also address public concerns, enhance institutional trust, and provide clear, credible, and accessible health-related messages. Tailored communication strategies are essential to bridge the gap between expert knowledge and public perception. Full article

Background: Fundamental movement skills (FMS) underpin lifelong physical activity (PA) and health, yet many children are failing to meet age-appropriate standards. Caregivers hold a critical influence over children’s motor development, but little is known about what helps or hinders family participation, including messaging. This study explored the determinants of family FMS engagement in the United Kingdom (UK) during early childhood, addressing unexplored gaps in how guidance reaches families and the role of grandparents in supporting children’s motor development. Methods: Twenty-three semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 caregivers and 8 educators, including 4 grandparents and 2 family hub practitioners who offered original insights. Eleven children aged 3–5 years completed a flexible draw-and-tell task, enabling inclusion of rarely represented 3-year-olds. Thematic analysis was deployed. Results: Families and outdoor spaces were pivotal to children’s movement opportunities. However, awareness and understanding of FMS and UK PA guidance were poor, even among educators, disrupting dissemination of information to families. Greater emphasis on PA and FMS concepts within professional development, alongside clearer signposting to resources, more visible public-facing campaigns, and digital formats, could improve how families receive these messages. Tensions emerged between parents’ concerns about grandparents’ physical capability and grandparents’ belief that they could adapt to support children’s development. Unexpectedly, no children drew technology despite screen time frequently displacing active play, hinting at its normalisation and regulatory role in children’s lives. Conclusions: To enhance family understanding, value, and participation in FMS, UK policy must evolve to become more visible, relatable, and responsive to diverse family needs. Full article

The transformation of religious authority in the digital age is shaped by the interactions between human actors, digital media and algorithmic systems. This study uses digital ethnography to examine how religious authority is constructed and negotiated on digital platforms used by Muslims in Indonesia and globally. This study focuses on seven authoritative figures in the digital Islamic landscape, representing different spectra of authority, from traditional pesantren in Indonesia to transnational apologetics and urban liberalism. The findings reveal patterns of authority delegation in which digital platforms replace human roles in da’wah and Islamic institutions. Religious authority is formed through articulative work that connects the Sunnah, intermediaries (religious scholars), and congregations. Public search data show that digital spaces function as a medium of distribution, where religious authority is shaped by audience responses, message repetition, symbolic affiliation, and the dynamics of debate. This study highlights the role of algorithmic culture and authority representation aesthetics in mediating religious authority in the digital age. Algorithms shape exposure and reach audiences, and representational aesthetics are crucial for disseminating religious content. The study concludes that clerical authority in the digital era results from technocultural mediation, in which the cleric becomes both a figure and representation calculated by machines and validated by the audience’s participation. Introduction: Early warning systems reduce losses when risk knowledge, forecasting, communication, and response planning operate as an end-to-end chain, yet Gulf Coast warning practice often treats hazard dynamics, ecosystem change, and social vulnerability as separate domains. This study mapped operational early warning systems for climate-relevant hazards across Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida and examined whether ecosystem protective functions and social vulnerability were integrated into warning thresholds, dissemination design, and preparedness planning. Methods: I conducted a scoping review using the Web of Science Core Collection and Scopus for publications from 2020 through 18 January 2026 and targeted searches of NOAA/NWS/NHC, FEMA IPAWS, CDC/ATSDR SVI, IOOS/GCOOS, USGS, and state coastal agency portals between 15 September 2025 and 18 January 2026. Of 861 identified records, 440 duplicates were removed, 421 titles and abstracts were screened, 121 full texts were assessed, and 25 sources were included in the final charting and synthesis. Results: The review identified 11 operational systems and related platforms spanning the four early warning pillars, but routine socio-ecological integration remained limited. Louisiana showed the strongest documentation of ecosystem monitoring through CPRA and CRMS, while Florida and Texas showed more developed evacuation and dissemination interfaces. Mississippi and Alabama were represented by thinner monitoring and implementation records in the included sample. Across states, ecosystem loss and social vulnerability were used more often as planning context than as repeatable inputs to thresholds, message tailoring, or assistance triggers. Discussion: Gulf Coast practices can be strengthened through formal protocols that connect ecosystem condition and vulnerability indicators to impact-based briefings, multilingual and accessible alert workflows, and tract-sensitive preparedness actions. The findings indicate that implementation can advance by linking existing datasets to defined operational decisions and by evaluating warning performance through reach, accessibility, comprehension, and action feasibility, as well as technical accuracy. The literature on the Commercial Determinants of Health has primarily focused on the political power and interventions of corporations versus countermeasures by civil society. However, there is a gap in the discourse concerning industry use of legal threats and actions to silence public health organizations and their public health communication campaigns (PHCCs). This legal review aims to understand legal challenges brought against PHCCs and provide best practices for effective campaigns while minimizing legal risk. We used jurisprudence in Mexico and the United States as proxies for civil and common law countries, supplemented by international law and principles to identify the best defenses and mitigation strategies against defamation and trademark infringement actions. Legal frameworks in these countries demonstrate the ability of aggressive evidence-based public health campaigns to withstand these legal challenges. Based on these legal protections, we recommend that advocates implement PHCCs that (1) contain facts that are true and substantiated with evidence, (2) frame messaging as opinion or satire, (3) highlight the non-commercial purpose of informing people about the impact of their consumption choices on health and well-being and (4) explain how the messaging advances the rights to health and access to information. A PHCC’s success in court can also set important precedents regarding the right of advocates to disseminate and the right of populations to receive important health messages. Following these recommendations and best practices, health advocates can minimize legal risk and continue to provide effective evidence-based PHCCs that promote and protect public health. Social media has become an important venue for health communication. Although prior research has examined the effects of humor, evidence on the mechanisms through which humor shapes communication effectiveness in social media health communication remains fragmented and has not been systematically synthesized. This systematic review examines how humor functions as a communication strategy in social media health communication designed by healthcare professionals, health organizations, and researchers. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, 32 empirical studies were identified and synthesized. Findings indicate that humor is primarily used in two ways: as a content-level strategy to enhance audience engagement and as a psychological persuasive appeal in health message design and dissemination. Across studies, humor not only enhanced platform-level engagement but also influenced affective responses, attitudes, cognitions, and perceptions, which in turn shaped health-related behavioral intentions. Importantly, the effectiveness of humor was also contingent upon contextual and audience characteristics. This review integrates fragmented evidence into a conceptual framework that clarifies the pathways and boundary conditions of humor-based health communication on social media. It also highlights key limitations associated with the use of humor in health messaging and outlines directions for future research. Overall, this study provides theoretical insights and practical guidance for the strategic use of humor in digital health communication. Full article

(1) Background: The incidence and impact of misleading information on public opinion in the field of nutrition and food science, focusing on the mechanisms of dissemination and their potential consequences, are increasingly being explored in academia. It is therefore essential to highlight the importance of studying discourse to understand the contexts and motivations behind the persistent circulation of hoaxes. For this reason, this research compiles and analyses the news content on food fake news published in the web repository of Spanish information verifiers Newtral and Maldita Alimentación. (2) Method: The period analysed extends from the launches of both platforms (2018 and 2021, respectively) to 2024, examining a total of 564 news items using computerised analysis software. (3) Results: The results show three thematic clusters related to the information refuted by Newtral and five clusters belonging to Maldita Alimentación. The findings of this research are consistent with a prevalence of concern for public health; the risk of disease due to poor food management; the role of authorities, especially in the European context; the supervision of food quality and the protection of public health; and the debunking of messages about food properties without scientific evidence. (4) Conclusions: The article highlights the importance of implementing strategies that foster trust in information sources, such as fact-checkers, and encourage the scientific dissemination of food-related content in an accessible manner. Consumer attitude uncertainty can hinder disruptive innovation (DI) diffusion in the new energy vehicle (NEV) market and weaken enterprises’ incentives to adopt new technologies. This study develops a dual-layer coupled network model linking consumer attitude dissemination and enterprise R&D strategy evolution under bounded observability. Our simulations show three main findings. First, stronger discouragement of counter-attitudinal dissemination markedly suppresses diffusion and lowers steady-state adoption. Second, diffusion strengthens when consumers weight public information more and firm messaging less, particularly under stronger policy support. Third, network structure shapes diffusion: stronger inter-enterprise connectivity increases adoption, and consumer topology and interaction breadth exert different effects under different network types. These results clarify how information environments, policy support, and cross-layer behavioral modulation jointly shape diffusion regimes. Full article

This scoping review examines public health communication across nine Eastern European and Central Asian states—Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan—highlighting how these systems have transitioned from Soviet-era legacies to contemporary practices. Eligibility criteria included the English- and Russian-language literature published from 1998 onwards, focusing on nine post-Soviet states. Sources of evidence comprised searches in Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, SSRN, Heliyon, MEDLINE/PubMed, and official government websites. Data were charted by three independent reviewers using a standardized form, with discrepancies resolved by senior reviewers. The review identifies persistent gaps in communication during health crises, with a particular focus on the COVID-19 pandemic, where centralized and hierarchical information flows often undermine transparency and responsiveness, as well as further increased health inequalities between rural and urban health outcomes. Despite ongoing reforms, the communication dimension of healthcare systems remains underdeveloped. Findings reveal that centralized and top-down communication remains a dominant feature across the region, hindering timely dissemination of information and limiting the capacity to counter misinformation, as both misinformation and disinformation sometimes emerge from the government. Ultimately, this review contributes a critical analysis of these systematic communication failures and underscores the need to strengthen public health communication and reduce health inequalities. To do it, governments must prioritize transparency, disclose decision-making processes, and rely on evidence-based messaging to build trust. Effective crisis response requires not only government leadership but also the active engagement of the medical and patient communities, supported by civil society and independent media. This review points out the need for more inclusive, transparent, and trust-oriented communication strategies to enhance public health preparedness and resilience in nine Eastern European and Central Asian contexts.
