Properties of Plant Extracts from Adriatic Maritime Zone for Innovative Food and Packaging Applications: Insights into Bioactive Profiles, Protective Effects, Antioxidant Potentials and Antimicrobial Activity

Knowledge about the composition (volatile and non-volatile) and functionality of natural extracts from Mediterranean plants serves as a basis for their further application. In this study, five selected plants were used for the extraction of plant metabolites. Leaves and flowers of Critmum maritimum, Rosmarinus officinalis, Olea europea, Phylliera latifolia and Mellisa officinalis were collected, and a total of 12 extracts were prepared. Extractions were performed under microwave-assisted conditions, with two solvent types: water (W) and a hydroalcoholic (ethanolic) solution (HA). Detailed extract analysis was conducted. Phenolics were analyzed by detecting individual bioactive compounds using high-performance liquid chromatography and by calculating total phenolic and total flavonoid content through spectrophotometric analysis. Higher concentrations of total phenolics and total flavonoids were obtained in the hydroalcoholic extracts, with the significantly highest total phenolic and flavonoid values in the rosemary hydroalcoholic extract (3321.21 mgGAE/L) and sea fennel flower extract (1794.63 mgQE/L), respectively; and the lowest phenolics in the water extract of olive leaves (204.55 mgGAE/L) and flavonoids in the water extracts of sea fennel leaves, rosemary, olive and mock privet (around 100 mgQE/L). Volatile organic compounds (VOC) were detected using HS-SPME/GC–MS (Headspace Solid-Phase Microextraction coupled with Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry), and antioxidant capacity was estimated using DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay) and FRAP (Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power) methods. HS-SPME/GC–MS analysis of samples revealed that sea fennel had more versatile profile, with the presence of 66 and 36 VOCs in W and HA sea fennel leaf extracts, 52 and 25 in W and HA sea fennel flower extracts, 57 in rosemary W and 40 in HA, 20 in olive leaf W and 9 in HA, 27 in W mock privet and 11 in HA, and 35 in lemon balm W and 10 in HA extract. The lowest values of chlorophyll a were observed in sea fennel leaves (2.52 mg/L) and rosemary (2.21 mg/L), and chlorophyll b was lowest in sea fennel leaf and flower (2.47 and 2.25 mg/L, respectively), while the highest was determined in olive (6.62 mg/L). Highest values for antioxidant activity, determined via the FRAP method, were obtained in the HA plant extracts (up to 11,216 mgAAE/L for lemon balm), excluding the sea fennel leaf (2758 mgAAE/L) and rosemary (2616 mgAAE/L). Considering the application of these plants for fresh fish preservation, antimicrobial activity of water extracts was assessed against Vibrio fischeri JCM 18803, Vibrio alginolyticus 3050, Aeromonas hydrophila JCM 1027, Moraxella lacunata JCM 20914 and Yersinia ruckeri JCM 15110. No activity was observed against Y. ruckeri and P. aeruginosa, while the sea fennel leaf showed inhibition against V. fisheri (inhibition zone of 24 mm); sea fennel flower was active against M. lacunata (inhibition zone of 14.5 mm) and A. hydrophila (inhibition zone of 20 mm); and rosemary and lemon balm showed inhibition only against V. fisheri (inhibition zone from 18 to 30 mm). This study supports the preparation of natural extracts from Mediterranean plants using green technology, resulting in extracts rich in polyphenolics with strong antioxidant potential, but with no clear significant antimicrobial efficiency at the tested concentrations. Industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) is gaining renewed interest as a sustainable source of natural fibres, particularly in regions like Belgium, where well-established flax processing infrastructure exists. However, region-specific data on varietal performance for long fibre production remain limited, hindering large scale adoption by both farmers and processors. This study aimed to assess the agronomic performance of early- and late-flowering hemp varieties under temperate maritime conditions through a three-year field trial at two sites in Flanders (Belgium). The evaluation focused on key parameters including emergence rate, plant morphology, long fibre yield and quality. Results showed that successful crop establishment is critical, as poor emergence influenced stem diameter (increasing with decreasing emergence) and leads to reduced long fibre yields by up to 50% between tested sites. Significant yield differences between trial years were present at both sites, with the biomass yield ranging from 10.7 to 14.5 and from 7.8 to 9.6 t ha−1 for Bottelare and Beitem, respectively. Under favourable conditions, long fibre yields reached up to 2.4 t ha−1 for late-flowering and 2.1 t ha−1 for early- and mid-late-flowering varieties. In Western Europe, early to mid-late flowering varieties are generally favoured. Among these, the mid-late flowering variety Bialobrzeskie demonstrated strong yield potential. Overall, fibre quality across varieties was comparable to that of flax. Full article

The Magallanes region, in southern Chile, is positioned as a strategic hub for the production of green hydrogen (GH2), green ammonia, and synthetic fuels, thanks to its exceptional wind potential and commitment to sustainability. This article analyzes the opportunities and challenges of these energy vectors in the context of global decarbonization, highlighting the key role of the Magallanes region in the energy transition. Green hydrogen production, through wind-powered electrolysis, takes advantage of the region’s constant, high-speed winds, enabling competitive, low-emission generation. In turn, green ammonia, derived from GH2, emerges as a sustainable alternative for the agricultural industry and maritime transport, while synthetic fuels (e-fuels) offer a solution for sectors that are difficult to electrify, such as aviation. The sustainability approach addresses not only emissions reduction but also the responsible use of water resources, the protection of biodiversity, and integration with local communities. The article presents the following structure: (i) introduction, (ii) wind resource potential, (iii) water resource potential, (iv) different forms of hydrogen and its derivatives production (green hydrogen, green ammonia, and synthetic fuels), (v) pilot-scale demonstration plant for Haru Oni GH2 production, (vi) future industrial-scale GH2 production projects, (vii) discussion, and (viii) conclusions. In addition, the article discusses public policies, economic incentives, and international collaborations that promote these projects, positioning Magallanes as a clean energy export hub. Finally, the article concludes that the region can lead the production of green fuels, contributing to global energy security and the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, advances in infrastructure, regulation, and social acceptance are required to guarantee a balanced development between technological innovation and environmental conservation. Full article

The LNG maritime industry started to anticipate offshore LNG production in tandem with increasing demand for FLNG platforms as offshore gas resources were developed further. The rapid expansion of FLNG deployment demands equipment and procedures that handle challenges associated with weight and space constraints. The chemical composition of LNG will result in slightly fewer CO2 emissions. While not significant, another crucial aspect is that LNG predominantly comprises methane, which is acknowledged as a greenhouse gas and is more harmful than CO2. This requires investigation into clean energy fuel supply for power generation systems, carbon emissions from the process, and thermodynamic analysis and optimisation. Focus on supplying fuel for FLNG power generation to reduce the essential management of boil-off fuel gas, which can be researched on the direct reforming method of hydrogen as a marine fuel gas to support the power generation system. The principal reason for choosing hydrogen over other energy sources is its exceptional energy-to-mass ratio (H/C ratio). The most effective method for hydrogen production is the methane reforming process, recognised for generating significant quantities of hydrogen. To optimise the small-scale plant with a carbon capture system (CCS) as integrated into the reforming process to produce blue hydrogen fuel with zero carbon emissions, this research selection focuses on two alternative processes: steam methane reforming (SMR) and autothermal reforming (ATR). Furthermore, the research article will contribute to other floating production platforms, such as FPSOs and FSRUs, and will be committed to clean energy policies that mandate the support of green alternatives in substitution of hydrocarbon fuel utilisation. Background and Methods: We assessed the prokaryotic and eukaryotic diversity present in non-vegetated and vegetated soils on King George Island, Maritime Antarctic, in combination with measurements of carbon dioxide fluxes. Results: For prokaryotes, 381 amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) were assigned, dominated by the phyla Actinobacteriota, Acidobacteriota, Pseudomonadota, Chloroflexota, and Verrucomicrobiota. A total of 432 eukaryotic ASVs were assigned, including representatives from seven kingdoms and 21 phyla. Fungi dominated the eukaryotic communities, followed by Viridiplantae. Non-vegetated soils had higher diversity indices compared with vegetated soils. The dominant prokaryotic ASV in non-vegetated soils was Pyrinomonadaceae sp., while Pseudarthrobacter sp. dominated vegetated soils. Mortierella antarctica (Fungi) and Meyerella sp. (Viridiplantae) were dominant eukaryotic taxa in the non-vegetated soils, while Lachnum sp. (Fungi) and Polytrichaceae sp. (Viridiplantae) were dominant in the vegetated soils. Measured CO2 fluxes indicated that the net ecosystem exchange values measured in vegetated soils were lower than ecosystem respiration in non-vegetated soils. However, the total flux values indicated that the region displayed positive ecosystem respiration values, suggesting that the soils may represent a source of CO2 in the atmosphere. Conclusions: Our study revealed the presence of rich and complex communities of prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms in both soil types. Although non-vegetated soils demonstrated the highest levels of diversity, they had lower CO2 fluxes than vegetated soils, likely reflecting the significant biomass of photosynthetically active plants (mainly dense moss carpets) and their resident organisms. The greater diversity detected in exposed soils may influence future changes in CO2 flux in the studied region, for which comparisons of non-vegetated and vegetated soils with different microbial diversities are needed. This reinforces the necessity for studies to monitor the impact of resident biota on CO2 flux in different areas of Maritime Antarctica, a region strongly impacted by climatic changes. Full article

This research aims to assess the integration of different fuel cell (FC) options with battery and waste heat recovery systems through a mathematical modelling process to determine the most feasible retrofit solutions for a marine electricity generation plant. This paper distinguishes itself from existing literature by incorporating future cost projection scenarios involving variables such as carbon tax, fuel, and equipment prices. It assesses the environmental impact by including upstream emissions integrated with the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) and the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) calculations. Real-time data have been collected from a Kamsarmax vessel to build a hybrid marine power distribution plant model for simulating six system designs. A Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methodology ranks the scenarios depending on environmental benefits, economic performance, and system space requirements. The findings demonstrate that the hybrid configurations, including solid oxide (SOFC) and proton exchange (PEMFC) FCs, achieve a deduction in equivalent CO2 of the plant up to 91.79% and decrease the EEXI and the average CII by 10.24% and 6.53%, respectively. Although SOFC-included configurations show slightly better economic performance and require less fuel capacity, the overall performance of PEMFC designs are ranked higher in MCDM analysis due to the higher power density. Saltmarshes provide important ecosystem services, including coastline protection, but face decline due to human activities and climate change. There are increasing efforts to conserve and restore saltmarshes worldwide. Our study evaluated the effectiveness of Sentinel-2 satellite imagery to monitor landcover changes using a saltmarsh restoration project undergoing its 9th to 12th year of recovery in the megatidal Bay of Fundy in Maritime Canada. Specifically, in 2019–2022, five satellite images per growing season were acquired. Random Forests classification for 13 landcover classes (ranging from bare mud to various plant communities) achieved a high overall classification accuracy, peaking at 96.43% in 2021. Field validation points confirmed this, with high validation accuracies reaching 93.02%. The classification results successfully distinguished ecologically significant classes, such as Spartina alternifloraS. patens mix. Our results reveal the appearance of high marsh species in restoration sites and elevational-based zonation patterns, indicating progression. They demonstrate the potential of Sentinel-2 imagery for monitoring saltmarsh restoration projects in north temperate latitudes, aiding management efforts. Full article

This paper investigates the illegal activities that may negatively impact the environment in Croatia’s protected areas, particularly those associated with tourism. Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and sensitivity analysis are used to identify distinct high-risk activities specific to different park types. Coastal parks are found to be particularly vulnerable to maritime-related illegal activities, with high risk exposure from mooring vessels and swimming in prohibited areas. These parks also face significant risks from illegal fishing and the capture of strictly protected plants and animals, highlighting the need for enhanced marine ecosystem protection. Mountainous and forest parks face significant risks from fire-related activities, while wetland parks are sensitive to poaching and illegal fishing. Additionally, diverse landscape parks show increased vulnerability to littering, poaching, and the collection or harvesting of strictly protected plants and animals. The results underscore the necessity for tailored risk-management strategies that prioritize interventions based on park-specific challenges. By addressing the unique vulnerabilities of each park type, this study contributes insights into mitigating environmental threats posed by tourism and emphasizes the importance of continuous monitoring and adaptive management in protected areas. Corrosion is the deterioration of metals due to environmental exposure. Commercial inhibitors used to control corrosion often contain heavy metal salts, which are highly toxic to both the environment and human health. A biosurfactant produced by the bacterium Pseudomonas cepacia CCT 6659 was tested as a corrosion inhibitor on carbon steel and galvanized iron surfaces. Matrices based on plant ingredients with different compositions were tested in a laboratory-constructed accelerated corrosion chamber (ACC) simulating a critical maritime atmosphere in conditions of 40 °C, 5% NaCl, and 100% humidity. The most stable matrix was selected for biosurfactant incorporation in different concentrations, expressed as critical micellar concentration (CMC), and was applied to metal surfaces to evaluate its ability to inhibit corrosion. Additionally, to evaluate the potential of the biosurfactant as a low-toxicity corrosion inhibitor additive in paint systems, iron and carbon steel samples were coated with three biosurfactant-containing commercial paints and subjected to critical atmospheric conditions for testing coating effectiveness. The formulation containing vegetable resin as a plasticizer, oleic acid, ethanol, and CaCO3 was chosen to incorporate the biosurfactant. The addition of the biosurfactant at twice its CMC led to a reduction in carbon steel sample mass loss from 123.6 to 82.2 g/m2, while in the galvanized iron plates, the mass loss decreased from 285.9 to 226.7 g/m2 at the same biosurfactant concentration. When supplemented with the biosurfactant, the alkyd resin-based paint (A) ensured less mass loss in samples (46.0 g/m2) compared to the control without biosurfactant (58.0 g/m2). Using the paint formulated with oil-based resin (B), the mass loss decreased from 53.0 to 24.1 g/m2, while with that based on petroleum derivatives (C), it decreased from 82.2 to 27.6 g/m2. These results confirm the feasibility of using biosurfactants in biodegradable coatings, reducing the need for commercial corrosion inhibitors. Full article

In order to achieve the goals of carbon neutrality and reduced carbon emissions, China is increasingly focusing on the development and utilization of renewable energy sources. Among these, ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) has the advantages of small periodic fluctuations and large potential reserves, making it an important research field. With the development of the “Maritime Silk Road”, the Xisha Islands in the South China Sea will see a growing demand for electricity, providing the potential for OTEC development in this region. Optimal site selection of OTEC power plants is a prerequisite for developing thermal energy provision, affecting both the construction costs and future benefits of the power plants. This study establishes a scientific evaluation model based on the decision-making frameworks of geographic information systems (GISs) and multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods, specifically the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) for assigning weights, the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) to reclassify the factors, and weighted linear combination (WLC) to compute the suitability index. In addition to commonly considered factors such as temperature difference and marine usage status, this study innovatively incorporates geological conditions and maximum offshore distances of cold seawater based on cost control. The final evaluation identifies three suitable areas for OTEC development near the Xuande Atoll and the Yongle Atoll in the Xisha Sea Area, providing valuable insights for energy developers and policymakers. Maritime forests are coastal ecosystems that stabilize coastlines, recharge aquifers, and provide protection against storm surges. The range of these forests has been decreasing due to threats such as urban expansion, clearing for agriculture, climate change, and an influx of native but competitive loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) from pine plantations. To restore maritime forests, southern live oak (Quercus virginiana Mill.) should be established as the dominant canopy species; however, knowledge of how to grow live oak in a restoration setting is limited. We planted southern live oak seedlings into a clearcut experimental site that was formerly a loblolly pine plantation. Our goal was to test how planting density (1, 2, or 3 m), mulch, and fertilization at planting impacted the initial growth of seedlings over the course of four growing seasons. The application of fertilizer had an initial positive effect on seedling diameter (36%) after the first growing season. The application of mulch increased seedling height in years 2 through 4 (25.6% to 22.7%), diameter in years 3 and 4 (20.9% to 19.3%), and crown width in year four (8.5%). Planting density had no consistent effect over the first four years. These results demonstrate the potential benefits of incorporating fertilizer and mulch into restoration prescriptions to promote seedling field establishment. Planting density should continue to be monitored through canopy closure for potential effects of plant facilitation. Integrating silvicultural treatments such as planting density, soil amendments, and vegetation control may inform cost-effective management recommendations for maritime forest restoration. Soil seedbanks are particularly important for the resiliency of species living in habitats threatened by climate change, such as alpine meadows. We investigated the germination rate and seedbank potential for the endemic species Dianthus pavonius, a carnation native to the Maritime Alps that is used as model system for disease in natural populations due to its frequent infections by a sterilizing anther-smut pathogen. We aimed to ascertain whether this species can create a persistent reserve of viable seeds in the soil which could impact coevolutionary dynamics. Over three years, we collected data from seeds sown in natural soil and analyzed their germination and viability. We found that D. pavonius seeds are not physiologically dormant and they are able to create a persistent soil seed bank that can store seeds in the soil for up to three years, but lower than the estimated plant lifespan. We conclude that while the seedbank may provide some demographic stability to the host population, its short duration is unlikely to strongly affect the host’s ability to respond to selection from disease. Our findings have implications for the conservation of this alpine species and for understanding the evolutionary dynamics between the host and its pathogen. Full article

Triacylglycerides (TAGs) produced via the syngas fermentation of biogenic residues and wastes were evaluated as a potential feedstock for advanced road transportation, aviation, and maritime drop-in fuels via hydroprocessing technology. Due to the limited availability of TAGs, a simulated feedstock (SM TAGs) was utilized by blending various commercial oils, simulating the fatty acid composition of TAGs. At first, the simulated feedstock and the real TAGs were hydrotreated on a TRL 4 (technology readiness level) pilot plant to evaluate the potential of the SM feedstock to simulate the TAGs based on product quality. The hydrotreatment technology was evaluated and optimized on a TRL 4 plant. The research was further extended to a TRL 5 hydrotreatment plant with the optimum operating window for scaling up the technology. The resulting product was fractionated on a batch fractionation unit under vacuum to separate the jet and diesel fractions. The produced fuels were analyzed and evaluated based on the aviation Jet A1, EN590, EN15940, and marine diesel DMA specifications. The results show that the TAG composition was successfully simulated via a blend of vegetable oils. In addition, the hydrotreatment of the real TAGs and simulated feedstock resulted in similar-quality liquid products. The technology was successfully scaled up on a TRL 5 unit, leading to advanced, high-quality aviation and diesel drop-in fuels from TAGs, while the reaction pathways of hydrotreating can be controlled via the operating parameters of pressure, temperature, and H2/oil ratio. The hydrotreatment process’s optimum conditions were 13.8 MPa pressure, 643 K temperature, 1 h−1 liquid hourly space velocity (LHSV), and 5000 scfb hydrogen-to-oil ratio. Finally, a storage stability study of the hydrotreated liquid product showed that it can be stored for more than 6 months at ambient conditions without any noticeable changes to its properties. Solving strategic IMO tasks for the decarbonization of maritime transport and the dynamics of its controlling indicators (EEDI, EEXI, CII) involves the comprehensive use of renewable and low-carbon fuels (LNG, biodiesel, methanol in the mid-term perspective of 2030, ammonia, and hydrogen to achieve zero emissions by 2050) and energy-saving technologies. The technology of regenerating secondary heat sources of the ship’s power plant WHR in the form of an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) is considered one of the most promising solutions. The attractiveness of the ORC is justified by the share of the energy potential of WHR at 45–50%, almost half of which are low-temperature WHR (80–90 °C and below). However, according to DNV GL, the widespread adoption of WHR-ORC technologies, especially on operating ships, is hindered by the statistical lack of system prototypes combined with the high cost of implementation. Developing methodological tools for justifying the energy efficiency indicators of WHR–ORC cycle implementation is relevant at all stages of design. The methodological solutions proposed in this article are focused on the initial stages of comparative evaluation of alternative structural solutions (without the need to use detailed technical data of the ship’s systems, power plant, and ORC nodes), expected indicators of energy efficiency, and cycle performance. The development is based on generalized results of variation studies of the ORC in the structure of the widely used main marine medium-speed diesel engine Wärtsilä 12V46F (14,400 kW, 500 min−1) in the operational load cycle range of 25–100% of nominal power. The algorithm of the proposed solutions is based on the established interrelationship of the components of the ORC energy balance in the P-h diagram field of thermodynamic indicators of the cycle working fluid (R134a was used). The implemented strategy does allow, in graphical form, for justifying the choice of working fluid and evaluating the energy performance and efficiency of alternative WHR sources for the main engine, taking into account the design solutions of the power turbine and the technological constraints of the ORC condensation system. The verification of the developed methodological solutions is served by the results of comprehensive variation studies of the ORC performed by the authors using the professionally oriented thermoengineering tool “Thermoflow” and the specification data of Wärtsilä 12V46F with an achieved increase in energy efficiency indicators by 21.4–7%. Due to growing environmental concerns and stringent emissions regulations, optimizing the fuel consumption of marine propulsion systems is crucial. This work deals with the potential in an LNG ship propulsion system to reduce fuel consumption through controlled load distribution between engines in Dual-Fuel Diesel Electric (DFDE) plant. Based on cyclical data acquisition measured onboard and using an optimization model, this study evaluates different load distribution strategies between setups according to the optimization model results and automatic (equal) operation to determine their effectiveness in improving fuel efficiency. The analysis includes scenarios with different fuel types, including LNG, MDO and HFO, at different engine loads. The results indicate that load distribution adjustment based on the optimization model results significantly improves fuel efficiency compared to conventional methods of uniform load distribution controlled by power management systems in almost all load intervals. This research contributes to the maritime industry by demonstrating that strategic load management can achieve significant fuel savings and reduce environmental impact, which is in line with global sustainability goals. This work not only provides a framework for the implementation of more efficient energy management systems on LNG vessels, but also sets a benchmark for future innovations in maritime energy optimization as well as in the view of exhaust emission reduction.
