Background and Clinical Significance: Isolated mediastinal lymphadenopathy is an exceptionally rare and diagnostically challenging initial manifestation of microscopic polyangiitis (MPA), often mimicking malignancy or infection. This case highlights the pivotal role of an innovative minimally invasive technique in achieving a definitive diagnosis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of MPA diagnosed via EBUS-TMC. Case Presentation: A 55-year-old male livestock farmer from a rural area with a history of recurrent pneumonia presented with four weeks of persistent fever, significant weight loss (7 kg), myalgia, and asthenia. Physical examination revealed fever and cachexia. Notable findings included leukocytosis (17,000/μL), normocytic anemia, thrombocytosis (672,000/μL), highly elevated inflammatory markers (CRP 145 mg/L, ESR 120 mm/h), and strongly positive MPO-ANCA (>134 U/mL). Serological testing was significant for IgG antibodies against Coxiella burnetii (Phase I 1:64, Phase II 1:256). PET-CT imaging demonstrated hypermetabolic bilateral hilar and mediastinal lymphadenopathy. Diagnostic challenges included overlapping serological findings suggestive of past Coxiella burnetii exposure. Endobronchial ultrasound–guided transbronchial mediastinal cryobiopsy (EBUS-TMC) of a subcarinal lymph node was performed, providing a high-quality sample that revealed neutrophilic small-vessel vasculitis with fibrinoid necrosis, definitive for MPA. Immunosuppressive therapy with high-dose corticosteroids and rituximab (1000 mg on days 1 and 15) was initiated, leading to the complete resolution of all constitutional symptoms. Conclusions: This case illustrates that EBUS-TMC is a safe and highly effective diagnostic tool for obtaining critical histological evidence in systemic vasculitides with atypical presentations. This technique should be considered in the diagnostic algorithm for unexplained mediastinal lymphadenopathy to avoid more invasive surgical procedures. Full article

Lion-head goose is a large-sized breed native to Guangdong Province, China, exhibits remarkable capacity for fatty liver production under overfeeding conditions and is highly valued by local farmers and consumers. However, the molecular mechanisms driving fatty liver development in this breed are still unknown. In this study, we evaluated liver weight differences between normally fed and overfed Lion-head geese and further examined sex-specific differences following overfeeding. Overfeeding significantly increased liver weight more than 340%, and males possess a stronger capacity for lipid deposition under the same feeding regimen compared with females. RNA-Seq analysis identified 1476 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) shared by both sexes, which were mainly enriched in lipid and energy metabolism, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial pathways. In addition, 627 male-specific and 420 female-specific DEGs revealed sex-dependent differences, with males showing stronger transcriptional regulation and females exhibiting enhanced antioxidant and detoxification responses. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) revealed 320 co-hub genes enriched in lipid and energy metabolism in overfeeding-induced fatty liver, along with 9 co-hub genes related to sex differences. Alternative splicing (AS) analysis detected 131 differentially spliced genes (DSGs). Integration of both approaches identified 7 overlapping genes, HYCC2 (Hyccin PI4KA lipid kinase complex subunit 2), AGL (Amylo-Alpha-1,6-Glucosidase and 4-Alpha-Glucanotransferase), CCDC62 (Coiled-coil domain containing 62), IGSF5 (Immunoglobulin superfamily member 5), MGARP (Mitochondria-localized glutamic acid-rich protein), CD80 (Cluster of Differentiation 80), and FPGS (Folylpolyglutamate synthase), as potential key regulators. These findings provide new insights into transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation of overfeeding-induced fatty liver in geese. Full article

To promote a sustainable coffee industry, Davao Oriental has branded its coffee in association with Mt. Hamiguitan. This study profiles the production capacities and agricultural practices of smallholder coffee farmers along the Mt. Hamiguitan buffer zone, focusing on women’s roles and farmers’ climate change awareness and adaptation strategies. Fifty-seven purposively selected farmers (28 females, 29 males) were interviewed using a validated semi-structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis and descriptive statistics. Most farmers (70%) were old (≥51) with over 40 years of experience (51%). Non-participation in farmers’ associations (73.7%) surpassed active membership (26.3%), with only 14% attending training. Most farmers (65%) intercropped 500–600 Robusta coffee trees/ha, with many farms established in the 1980s (36%). The farmers performed clearing (82%) and pruning (94%) of their coffee. Women played a vital role, especially during drying and harvesting. All respondents acknowledged climate change and employed practices such as intercropping, pruning, using ipil-ipil for shade, and utilizing nets, which, though originally aimed at improving crop resilience, can also serve as adaptations to mitigate the impacts of climate change. Recommendations for fostering sustainable practices while improving livelihoods include joining cooperatives, providing training for enhanced climate change adaptation strategies, and increasing women’s participation in coffee production. Background: The use of pesticides among smallholder farmers, agrochemical sellers, and agricultural officers involves a complex interplay of knowledge, economic factors, and regulatory frameworks. Therefore, this study explores the patterns, practices, and socio-environmental dynamics of pesticide use among smallholder farmers and agro-input sellers in Iringa and Njombe. Method: This study employed a qualitative, phenomenological design, guided by the socio-ecological model (SEM), to explore the lived experience of farmers, agro-dealers, and extension officers. It involved a total of 23 interviews performed in the Njombe and Iringa regions. Data were collected between October 2024 and March 2025, using a combination of in-depth phenomenological interviews, key informant interviews, and field observations, and were categorized into themes and subthemes analyzed using InVivo. Results: The study involved a total of 23 participants drawn from the Iringa and Njombe regions. The gender distribution was nearly balanced, with 52.1% male and 47.8% female respondents. The mean age of participants was 33 years (95% CI: 29.3–37.3). In terms of education, over half (52.17%) had completed primary school. The findings show that smallholders in Iringa and Njombe widely use mixed pesticides and fertilizers, rely on trusted brands, and adapt to climate impacts, but face challenges with regard to unsafe mixing, poor storage, fake products, and weak regulation, highlighting the need for better education, market oversight, and safer practices. Conclusion: Using the socio-ecological model, the findings indicate that pesticide use among smallholder horticultural farmers in Iringa and Njombe is influenced by a complex interaction of socio-economic constraints, market forces, climate variability, and institutional shortcomings. Although farmers have some awareness of safe practices, systemic barriers continue to limit the adoption of sustainable pesticide management. Full article

Agriculture is one of the many sectors facing significant risks from climate change. To manage potential crop losses, whether climate-related or not, farmers widely rely on crop insurance to increase their resilience. However, farmers in Sri Lanka demonstrate a limited acceptance of crop insurance schemes. This study aimed to investigate the perceptions and Willingness-to-Pay (WTP) for crop insurance schemes among the paddy farmers in Kurunegala district. A total of 248 paddy farmers from the Kurunegala district were recruited as the study sample using the stratified random sampling approach. A pre-tested structured questionnaire and choice cards were used for primary data collection. The Conditional Logit Model (CLM) was used for data analysis. Around 77.8% of respondents were males engaged only in paddy farming, while the majority (62.5%) received an income of LKR 50,000 to 75,000. Complications experienced during the claim form-filling process (mean = 4.6), gaps in covering all crops on the crop land (mean = 4.6), and poor service quality (mean = 4.5) were perceived as the major limitations in existing crop insurance schemes. Outcomes of the CLM indicated that farmers with a positive attitude toward crop insurance significantly prefer plans with drought coverage (β = 0.823; p < 0.05), on-field assessments (β = 0.251; p < 0.05), and higher no-hazard returns (β = 0.318; p < 0.05) while showing a notable sensitivity to premium costs (β = −0.590; p < 0.05). The model also revealed an apparent willingness to switch from the status quo when presented with better-designed alternatives. The findings emphasized the need to implement responsive crop insurance schemes to enhance climate resilience and ensure the sustainability of paddy production in Sri Lanka. Full article

Spineless cactus, known for its high heat tolerance and low water requirements, offers a sustainable alternative for animal feed in regions where conventional crops struggle to thrive. This study aimed to evaluate the carcass characteristics, leg tissue composition, and non-carcass constituents of lambs fed increasing levels (0, 15, 30, and 45% based on dry matter) of spineless cactus as a replacement for Tifton hay. Additionally, we estimated body weight and carcass traits using biometric measurements (BM). Forty male lambs, with an average initial body weight of 23.6 ± 2.58 kg, were subjected to a feedlot regime. Empty body weight was the only variable that showed a significant orthogonal contrast between the control group (0%) and those fed spineless cactus (p < 0.05). A quadratic regression effect (p < 0.05) was observed for the weights of the cold half carcass, neck, shoulder, and leg cuts. No significant effects were found on non-carcass components or biometric measurements. Biometric measurements showed strong positive correlations with slaughter weight and carcass characteristics. Based on these findings, replacing 30% of Tifton hay with spineless cactus is recommended as the optimal level, as it maintains carcass quality, tissue composition, and non-carcass traits. Moreover, biometric measurements prove to be effective tools for predicting slaughter weight and carcass characteristics, offering practical value for farmers seeking efficient and sustainable production strategies. The inclusion levels of 24.25% to 27.50% of spineless cactus in the diet of confined sheep appear to be the most efficient, promoting high-value commercial cuts without compromising carcass quality parameters. These levels balance productive performance and sustainability, especially in semi-arid regions. Full article

Digital literacy (DL) among farmers serves as a vital link between digital technology and green sustainable development, significantly enhancing agricultural green total factor productivity (AGTFP). This study employs panel data from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) covering 2014–2020, applying a two-way fixed effects model and machine learning techniques to examine the influence of farmers’ digital literacy on AGTFP. The results indicate that DL positively contributes to AGTFP. Further heterogeneity analysis shows stronger effects among male farmers, households with low trust, and those within the working-age population. Mechanism analysis indicates that social capital accumulation mediates the relationship, whereas agricultural socialization services strengthen the positive impact of DL on AGTFP. Additional analysis using machine learning models reveals that the impact of farmers’ digital literacy on AGTFP changes over time. Specifically, entertainment and learning-oriented network use enhances AGTFP, whereas work-related, social, and lifestyle-related use suppresses it. This study offers a more nuanced understanding by shifting from traditional macro-level frameworks to a micro-level perspective focused on farmers’ digital literacy. Moreover, the innovative application of explainable machine learning provides empirical evidence for the underlying drivers of AGTFP. Full article

Background: An epidemiological survey of Onchocerca volvulus infection and onchocerciasis in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area, Enugu State, Nigeria, was undertaken to assess its distribution and risks among individuals in the area. Methods: A total of 201 residents who have lived in the study area for at least one year were recruited. At recruitment, they were examined using a rapid assessment method. Their demographic information and risk factors were obtained using a structured questionnaire. Results: The overall prevalence for onchocerciasis was 3.5% (7/201). The prevalence of onchocerciasis was observed to be non-significantly (p = 0.689) different among the studied communities. The sex and age-related prevalence differences were non-significant (p > 0.05); however, onchocerciasis was more prevalent among males and those between 30 and 39 years of age. The prevalence of onchocerciasis was higher (p = 0.001) among farmers/fishermen. The significant risk associated with onchocerciasis is the proximity of the water body to houses (p = 0.034). Conclusions: The onchocerciasis prevalence was low and not dependent on sex or age but rather occupation. Risks to onchocerciasis are environmental and occupational, with chances of scaled up prevalence and burden overtime if unchecked. There is a need for awareness campaigning to enable proper education of the people about onchocerciasis in the area and neighboring communities. Full article

Background: Load carriage is an activity of daily living, can be an occupational risk, and is a popular method of resistance training. Type of carry could be related to vascular and blood pressure (BP) responses and may be related to cardiovascular risk. As physical activity is recommended by clinicians and exercise physiologists, understanding the vascular responses in relation to type of carry is important to consider in terms of risk. The purpose of this study was to compare the vascular health and BP responses to the farmer’s handle (load at the side of the body) and zercher (load in front of the body) carry and to examine sex differences in the responses. Methods: A total of 38 adults (22 females and 16 males) completed farmer’s handle and zercher load carriage with pre- and post-vascular measurements using pulse wave analysis. Results: We found that load carriage with weight in front of the body (zercher) elicits a larger increase in arterial stiffness (AIx@75), and load carriage with the load on the side of the body (farmer’s handle) elicits a larger increase in peripheral systolic BP. There were no sex differences in the responses to carry. Females exercise (3.1 vs. 4.8) and weight train (1.5 vs. 2.6) fewer times per week and had a lower resting systolic BP (121.5 ± 10.3 vs. 131.3 ± 8.3 mmHg) (p < 0.05). Both types of load carriage increased peripheral systolic BP, central systolic BP, and vascular stiffness (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Location of load carriage is important to consider based on potential cardiac risk of patients. Full article

Encouraging farmers to adopt low-carbon agricultural technologies is a vital strategy for addressing climate change and fostering a harmonious relationship between humans and nature. An initial step is understanding the formation of farmers’ willingness to adopt them. This study adopts an integrated theoretical framework combining the Theory of Planned Behavior and the Norm Activation Model to explore the determinants and formation process of farmers’ adoption intentions. Using survey data from 1008 farmers in Shandong Province, the study employs Structural Equation Modeling to empirically examine the influencing factors and mechanisms underlying farmers’ willingness to adopt low-carbon agricultural technologies. The results reveal that perceived behavioral control, subjective norm, and attitudes toward behavior serve as the critical external driving forces for the formation of adoption intention, whereas personal norms act as the core intrinsic motivation by fostering farmers’ sense of ecological responsibility. Multi-group analysis reveals socio-demographic heterogeneity: perceived control drives males and wealthier, less-educated farmers; subjective norms influence younger, educated groups; attitudes affect females and low-income farmers, while personal norms dominate among older farmers. Therefore, policy design should enhance farmers’ resource accessibility, strengthen social demonstration, and cultivate ecological ethics with tailored incentives, thereby promoting the widespread adoption of low-carbon agricultural technologies. Farming is a uniquely demanding occupation, with family and work often deeply intertwined. Whilst this integration is common amongst the agricultural sector in Ireland (99.7% farms classified as family), it can lead to a conflict of responsibilities, but this has not been examined to date. Therefore, this study aimed to examine work–family conflict (WFC) in farmers in Ireland, and if WFC differs based on socio-demographic factors, mental health, social support and farm-specific stressors. A cross-sectional study examined WFC in 446 farmers in Ireland. Depression, anxiety, stress, suicidality, general mental health, psychological flexibility, cognitive fusion, self-experience, perceived social support, farm stress and attachment were also measured. Participants reported moderately high levels of WFC (25.1 ± 7.2). Being younger, male, having children aged 5 years or less, higher reported working hours on the farm, higher farm-specific stressors, and lower psychological flexibility contributed to higher WFC. In addition, lower social support, mental health and psychological skills were significantly associated with higher WFC. Future research should consider the integrated nature of work and family in farm life and use a qualitative approach to further understand gendered experiences of WFC. Full article

Global biodiversity losses continue despite intensive conservation efforts. Many mammal species are understudied due to their specialized ecological niches. One such species is the Philippine colugo (Cynocephalus volans), a nocturnal endemic species in the Philippines. In this study, we utilized Local Ecological Knowledge (LEK) to obtain baseline information on species knowledge, attitudes, population status, and threats. Between June and September 2023, we interviewed 471 residents across all villages in Anda, Bohol. The majority of local people recognized the species and had witnessed it in Anda, occasionally near households. Residents have limited knowledge of colugo diet and distribution, which they get primarily through word-of-mouth and personal experience. The species is perceived as neutral, but the willingness to conserve it is high. Although the Philippine colugo population seems to be present in several villages in Anda, one-fourth of the respondents believe it is declining. We identified hunting for consumption as the main threat to the colugo population in Anda, which, together with other threats, may corroborate this result. We recommend actively involving male farmers in colugo population monitoring and behavioral observations, as well as investigating the drivers and importance of colugo meat consumption among residents to design a proper conservation strategy. The planthopper Pentastiridius leporinus, commonly called reed glass-winged cicada, transmits the pathogens “Candidatus Arsenophonus phytopathogenicus” and “Candidatus Phytoplasma solani”, which are infesting sugar beet and, most recently, also potato in the Upper Rhine valley area of Germany. They cause the “Syndrome Basses Richesses” associated with reduced yield and sugar content in sugar beet, leading to substantial monetary losses to farmers in the region. No effective solutions exist currently. This study uses statistical models to understand to what extent the abundance of cicadas depends on climate regions during the vegetation period (April–October). We further investigated what influence temperature and precipitation have on the abundance of the cicadas in sugar beet fields. Furthermore, we investigated the possible impacts of future climate on cicada abundance. Also, 22 °C and 8 mm/day were found to be the optimal temperature and precipitation conditions for peak male cicada flight activity, while 28 °C and 8 mm/day were the optimum for females. By the end of the 21st century, daily male cicada abundance is projected to increase significantly under the worst-case high greenhouse gas emission scenario RCP8.5 (RCP-Representative Concentration Pathways), with confidence intervals suggesting a possible 5–15-fold increase compared to current levels. In contrast, under the low-emission scenario RCP2.6, male cicada populations are projected to be 60–70% lower than RCP8.5. An understanding of the influence of changing temperature and precipitation conditions is crucial for predicting the spread of this pest to different regions of Germany and other European countries. Perception and Adoption of Food Safety Standards: A Case of VietGAP Sheep Farmers in the Ninh Thuan Province of Vietnam

To facilitate the adoption of a food safety standard by producers, it is essential to understand their perception of it. However, few empirical studies have examined how livestock farmers perceive food safety standards in Vietnam. This research examines sheep farmers’ attitudes towards Vietnamese Good Agricultural Practices (VietGAP), a type of a food safety standard in Vietnam. A sample size of 109 farmers was selected for interviews and a structured questionnaire was generated to collect data. Descriptive and bivariate analyses were employed. The study results show that sheep farmers were well aware of most VietGAP requirements. They perceived that adopting VietGAP requires practical changes in sheep farming systems, including: selecting breeding stock from clear sources to ensure sheep product traceability, collecting and treating wastes daily to protect the environment, and frequent sterilization of sheep cages. The farmers were changing several practices to comply with VietGAP. Key changed practices identified included: bought breeding stock from clear and reliable sources, frequent collecting and treating of sheep wastes, and used veterinary medicine according to instructions of veterinary medicine producers. Statistically significant relationships existing between the sheep farmers’ perceptions and their education level (Pearson = 0.229, p = 0.017), farm size (Pearson = −0.193; p = 0.049), gender (Eta = 0.173, p = 0.060), practice of using labours (Eta = 0.202, p = 0.028), training participation (Eta = 0.211, p = 0.022), credit participation (Eta = 0.177, p = 0.050), community-based organisations (Eta = 0.153, p = 0.087), and veterinary/extension contacts (Eta = 0.217, p = 0.019) were found. This means that a male sheep farmer who had a higher education level, possessed a smaller farm, practiced hired labours, participated in training/credit programs, was a member of community-based organisation, and had contacts with veterinary/extension workers likely perceived VietGAP better than their counterparts. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that the promotion of VietGAP for livestock farmers should be developed and carried out as joint attempts along the value chain actors. New food marketing practices and legal framework and policy for using safe food certifications are required to address to promote farmers’ adoption of VietGAP and facilitate transition towards a sustainable agri-food system in Vietnam. This study provides significant insights into safety food standard adoption by livestock farmers and highlights aspects that require to be considered when developing policies to improve the adoption of safety food standards in developing countries. Understanding agricultural production dynamics is vital for addressing global food security in the least developed countries. In Senegal, the issues of rural development and enhancing agricultural productivity are still less understood. Using survey data (n = 600) from the Thiès region, this study aims to explore factors that influence agricultural productivity in Senegal. The multinomial probit model is estimated using maximum simulated likelihood (MSL) methods. This approach is necessary due to the presence of multiple-choice categories. The results highlight that young farmers aged 18–30 are less likely to achieve high production (>10 tons) compared to their older counterparts (p < 0.01). In contrast, older farmers (31–60) report higher income stability (p < 0.05). Education levels also impact production, with farmers having lower or upper secondary education being less likely to attain high production than illiterate farmers (p < 0.05). Receiving subsidies reduces the likelihood of high production (p < 0.01). Larger landholdings (>1 ha) correlate with lower production odds (p < 0.01), suggesting diminishing returns. Gender disparities are evident, with male farmers being 45.6% more likely to report income declines (p < 0.1). Marginal effects show that acquiring land through rental or purchase significantly boosts income (p < 0.01), while traditional ploughing increases the sown area (p < 0.01). Policymakers should enhance training in agriculture, improve subsidies, secure land tenure, and promote certified seeds to boost productivity. This study highlights the need for targeted policies on training, subsidies, land tenure, and sustainable practices to enhance Senegal’s agricultural productivity. Full article
