Focal therapy is emerging as an organ-preserving strategy for selected patients with localized prostate cancer, aiming to preserve urinary and sexual function while maintaining acceptable cancer control. However, patient and technology selection remain complex because prostate cancer is often multifocal, clinically significant lesions may be missed by imaging or biopsy, and long-term comparative oncological data are limited. This narrative review summarizes current evidence and consensus recommendations on oncological suitability, histopathological risk features, tumor burden, imaging assessment, anatomical considerations, functional priorities, and follow-up. We also discuss the complementary roles of multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging, prostate-specific membrane antigen positron emission tomography, micro-ultrasound, and artificial intelligence-assisted planning. Finally, we review how tumor location and proximity to critical structures guide selection among high-intensity focused ultrasound, cryotherapy, irreversible electroporation, transurethral ultrasound ablation, laser ablation, and photodynamic therapy. Focal therapy remains promising but requires careful selection, shared decision-making, and structured follow-up. Full article

Long-term energy system planning depends on projections of future wind turbine characteristics, yet existing approaches rely on either costly expert elicitation or deterministic trend extrapolation without formal uncertainty quantification. We present a Bayesian logistic framework that models the temporal evolution of hub height, rotor diameter, and specific power as physically constrained growth and decay processes, producing full posterior predictive distributions via Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling. The framework is validated across three major onshore wind markets: Austria (534 turbines, 2000–2025), Germany (31,202 turbines, 1988–2026), and the United States (71,457 turbines, 1986–2025); spanning different market structures, regulatory environments, and data availability. Systematic benchmarking against linear, polynomial, and maximum-likelihood alternatives demonstrates superior hindcast performance, particularly for long-range projections where physical saturation constraints become relevant. Prior sensitivity analysis reveals that posteriors are robust for data-rich regions but honestly reflect prior influence for small datasets, identifying where expert knowledge is essential. We extend the framework to climate-aware energy yield estimation by propagating turbine posteriors through synthetic power curves and site-specific wind resource projections under SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5, decomposing the total uncertainty into technology and climate components. When climate uncertainty is measured by scenario spread alone, technology uncertainty dominates. However, accounting for the full inter-model spread across 13 CMIP6 global climate models reveals that climate uncertainty becomes substantial (14–56%) and region-dependent, underscoring that both sources require explicit quantification. The open-source pipeline is designed for direct adoption in energy system planning workflows. Full article

Rainfall variability strongly influences both flood and drought hazards, especially in climatic transition zones where precipitation is highly seasonal and spatially heterogeneous. This study assessed long-term changes in rainfall patterns and compound flood–drought hazard in the Huaihe River Basin, China, using ERA5-Land-derived daily precipitation series at 174 spatial sampling locations during 1950–2025. Rainfall pattern indicators, flood-related rainfall extremes, and SPI-3-based drought indicators were calculated to characterize rainfall amount, frequency, intensity, dry–wet persistence, heavy rainfall events, and meteorological drought conditions. The Mann–Kendall test and Sen’s slope estimator were used to detect long-term trends, and a compound flood–drought hazard classification framework was developed based on a flood-related rainfall hazard index (FHI) and a drought-related hazard index (DHI). The results showed that annual total precipitation, wet days, and consecutive wet days decreased significantly, indicating reduced rainfall occurrence and wet spell persistence. Flood-related rainfall indicators generally showed decreasing tendencies, with more evident declines in persistent multi-day extremes than in single-day rainfall. In contrast, mean SPI-3 showed a significant drying tendency, although drought frequency, severe drought frequency, and drought intensity did not exhibit significant monotonic trends. Spatially, rainfall pattern, flood-related, and drought-related indicators showed clear heterogeneity across the basin. The compound hazard classification identified flood-dominated and drought-dominated areas as the two major hazard types, each accounting for 31.03% of the spatial sampling locations, while low compound hazard and compound flood–drought hazard areas each accounted for 18.97%. These findings indicate that flood- and drought-related hazards coexist but vary spatially across the Huaihe River Basin. The proposed framework provides preliminary rainfall-based information for differentiated flood–drought hazard assessment, climate-adaptive water resources planning, and the sustainable management of water resources in regions facing spatially heterogeneous hydroclimatic hazards. Land use/land cover (LULC) is one of the core driving factors affecting terrestrial ecosystem carbon storage and exacerbating global warming. As an area with the most intense land–sea interactions, China’s coastal zone has experienced drastic LULC transition and carbon storage fluctuations during the rapid urbanization process. Based on the InVEST model, this study analyzes the spatiotemporal dynamics of LULC and carbon storage (CS) in China’s coastal regions from 2000 to 2024, and simulated multi-scenario carbon storage trajectories for 2050 integrating the SSP-RCP scenarios of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6). Furthermore, the XGBoost-SHAP and generalized additive models (GAMs) were introduced to deeply analyze the nonlinear characteristics and temporal heterogeneity of the driving mechanisms of CS evolution. The results show the following: (1) During the study period, the LULC structure of the coastal region was dominated by cropland and forestland consistently accounting for over 85%, but exhibited a competitive pattern characterized by the continuous expansion of built-up land severely squeezing ecological spaces. (2) The total regional CS showed an overall phased downward trend, accompanied by increasing fragmentation of high carbon sink areas. Notably, as the core carbon pool, the reduction in forest area was the dominant factor causing regional net carbon losses. (3) CS remained relatively stable under SSP1-2.6, representing a sustainable development pathway with low greenhouse gas emissions. In contrast, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0, and SSP5-8.5 exhibited more pronounced declines in carbon storage by 2050, indicating that SSP1-2.6 is the most favorable pathway for maintaining long-term carbon storage stability in China’s coastal regions. (4) The driving mechanism of CS has undergone a profound shift from being dominated by natural ecological baselines to human activities. Land use intensity (LUI) has emerged as the strongest predictor in the model, and the nonlinear impacts of human activities have grown increasingly complex over time. This study highlights the complex impacts of high-intensity human disturbances on the coastal carbon cycle, providing a scientific basis for formulating differentiated carbon management strategies and adaptive spatial land-use planning oriented toward the “Dual Carbon” goals. Brownfield greening (BG) has become an important approach to addressing urban land scarcity, environmental remediation, and sustainable urban development. This scoping review analysed 116 English-language publications from the Web of Science and Scopus databases. The review identified five major research themes: pollution and remediation, regeneration design, brownfield characteristics and greening benefits, planning and decision-making, and stakeholder perceptions. Findings indicate a transition from contamination-focused studies towards integrated approaches emphasising ecological restoration, social values, and multifunctional green infrastructure. Research methods have evolved from qualitative case studies to interdisciplinary approaches involving spatial analysis, ecological modelling, scenario simulation, and participatory methods. Existing studies mainly focus on regenerated sites and site-scale analyses, while contamination and remediation processes are often insufficiently incorporated into planning, design, and ecosystem-service assessments. The review highlights the diverse ecological, social, economic, and cultural benefits generated by BG and identifies key research gaps, including the need to better integrate remediation into regeneration processes, to conduct long-term monitoring, to conduct comparative international studies, and to include evidence from underrepresented regions. Overall, BG is increasingly recognised as a multifunctional strategy for sustainable urban regeneration. Full article

Background/Objectives: African swine fever (ASF) is a highly lethal disease of domestic pigs and wild suids that continues to cause substantial economic losses worldwide. Despite recent progress in live attenuated ASF vaccine development, evidence supporting durable protection under repeated exposure conditions representative of endemic settings remains limited. Here, we assessed the long-term safety and protective efficacy of a live attenuated ASFV-G-ΔI177L/ΔLVR vaccine using a repeated-challenge experimental design intended to model re-exposure in ASF-endemic regions. Methods: Vaccinated pigs were subjected to homologous virulent ASF virus challenges at multiple intervals, including repeated challenges (three sequential inoculations) and single challenges administered at 8 and 12 weeks post-vaccination. Results: Across all challenge regimens, vaccinated animals survived and remained clinically healthy, including those receiving three challenges, supporting sustained protection under repeated exposure pressure. Animals challenged at 8 or 12 weeks post-vaccination likewise exhibited complete survival, indicating maintained efficacy through at least 12 weeks. No vaccine-associated adverse clinical outcomes were detected over the study period, and post-challenge viral shedding was minimal. Conclusions: Overall, these data demonstrate that the candidate live attenuated ASF vaccine provides excellent protective efficacy and confers sustained protection against homologous ASF virus infection. This result is expected to be equally applicable under repeated exposure conditions in regions with unstable ASF biosecurity, making it a sufficiently promising model experiment for field application in ASF epidemic areas. However, this is still a vaccine variant, and further studies are planned to evaluate its genomic stability and transmissibility. Full article

Large congenital melanocytic nevi (LCMN) of the face can pose significant functional, esthetic, and psychosocial challenges in childhood. In selected patients, staged excision offers a practical reconstructive strategy when primary closure is not feasible without distortion of nearby facial landmarks. We report the management of a child with a facial LCMN using a planned multistage surgical approach aimed at lesion removal while preserving contour and minimizing scar burden. The lesion was excised sequentially over three procedures, with careful attention given to relaxed skin tension lines and facial esthetic units. When required, adjunctive reconstruction was performed to optimize closure and support tissue healing. This approach allowed a gradual reduction in the nevus, improved tissue accommodation, and avoidance of excessive tension on the surrounding skin. Postoperative recovery was uncomplicated, and the final esthetic outcome was satisfactory for both the patient and parents. Staged excision was selected over tissue expansion and skin grafting because it allowed progressive lesion reduction while preserving adjacent facial landmarks and minimizing donor-site morbidity. This technical case highlights the importance of individualized surgical planning, preservation of facial esthetic units, and staged scar placement when managing large facial congenital melanocytic nevi in pediatric patients. The educational value of the report lies in illustrating the decision-making process used to balance lesion removal, esthetic outcomes, and long-term surveillance in a challenging facial location. Accurate rainfall estimates are essential for managing water resources and planning for climate risks in semi-arid regions, yet long-term gauge networks in these environments are often extremely limited. In this study, we evaluate three widely used multi-source precipitation datasets—CHIRPS, IMERG, and ERA5-Land—against long-term observations from Ed Dueim and Kosti, the two main reference stations in White Nile State, central Sudan. The assessment covers monthly and annual scales across each product’s available record (1952–2022) and uses a broad set of metrics, including Pearson and Spearman correlations, NSE, KGE, RMSE, MAE, percent bias, and categorical detection scores (POD, FAR, CSI). All three datasets capture the region’s single-peak June–October monsoon pattern, but their accuracy differs sharply when it comes to rainfall amounts and year-to-year variability. CHIRPS performs best overall, with the strongest monthly efficiency scores of any product and a consistent, operationally correctable dry bias of 5–13%. IMERG shows strong monthly correlations but consistently overestimates rainfall by 25–42%, which leads to unreliable annual totals. ERA5-Land performs worst across nearly all metrics, with monthly NSE near or below zero, and frequent false alarms during the dry season. Taken together, the evidence points to CHIRPS as the most reliable dataset for routine hydro-climatic monitoring in White Nile State, while IMERG and ERA5-Land may still be useful in more specialized or time-specific applications. The purpose of this study is to explore how Zimbabwean firms use Environmental Management Accounting (EMA) and climate risk disclosure amid climate policy uncertainty and how managers perceive these practices as relevant to organisational resilience and long-term sustainability within a volatile institutional and macroeconomic context. The study was couched in the interpretivist research philosophy and adopted the inductive research approach. A case study research design, which aligns with a qualitative research design, was chosen for the study. The study employed in-depth interviews with management accountants, finance executives, and industry leaders across firms in Harare. The study adopted the cross-sectional time horizon and analysed data using thematic analysis to develop insights into the role of EMA and climate risk disclosure in times of policy uncertainty. The findings suggest that participants perceived climate policy uncertainty as influencing organisational efforts to reconfigure management accounting practices through greater environmental performance monitoring, adaptive budgeting, and scenario-based planning. The findings of this study suggest that organisational actors interpreted climate policy uncertainty as a condition requiring greater flexibility in budgeting, environmental monitoring, and strategic planning. Participants in this study associated EMA with improved environmental cost visibility and more adaptive approaches to investment appraisal and risk management under uncertain policy conditions. Similarly, participants perceived climate risk disclosure as increasingly crucial for strengthening organisational legitimacy, stakeholder confidence, and institutional credibility. While respondents linked sustainability-oriented accounting adaptation to broader organisational resilience and long-term sustainable growth aspirations, these relationships were understood through managerial perceptions and organisational experiences rather than as directly measurable macroeconomic outcomes. The study contributes to the sustainability accounting literature by providing qualitative, context-sensitive insights into how managers in an emerging economy interpret climate policy uncertainty and adapt EMA and climate risk disclosure practices within volatile institutional conditions. The study further contributes by integrating sensemaking theory and institutional theory to explain how organisational interpretations of uncertainty shape sustainability-oriented accounting adaptation and perceptions of organisational resilience. It is therefore recommended that the regulatory institutional pillar be strengthened to reduce uncertainty and enhance the EMA’s strategic adaptation. Full article

The integration of high-penetration renewable energy creates new requirements for cross-timescale peak shaving and for system robustness under extreme meteorological conditions. This study develops a dual-timescale capacity allocation method for pumped hydro storage (PHS), combining 8760 h chronological production simulation with monthly typical-day retrospective analysis. The model represents the operating limits of conventional units, nuclear power, hydropower, wind power, photovoltaic generation, tie-line exchange, and PHS energy shifting. On this basis, a stepwise capacity-sensitivity framework is established to minimize annualized comprehensive system cost while controlling renewable energy curtailment within a predefined planning threshold, rather than treating zero curtailment as an unconditional monthly hard constraint. Using long-term planning data from a coastal provincial power grid in southeastern China, the study compares the 2035 and 2040 planning scenarios. The results show that isolated typical-day models tend to overestimate PHS requirements because they disconnect chronological continuity and cross-day reservoir buffering. In 2035, the system presents a two-level seasonal capacity structure: 15,000 MW can support normalized operation in stable months, whereas the rigid boundary rises to 19,000 MW under extreme autumn high-wind conditions. In 2040, wind and photovoltaic capacity increase by approximately 20.01 GW compared with 2035, deepening low-net-load valleys and compressing seasonal regulation margins. Under the assumed planning boundary, the recommended PHS capacity converges to 23,000 MW. The proposed framework provides a practical reference for flexible resource planning in coastal power grids with deep renewable energy integration. Full article

The current study examines environmental and land cover changes in the Al-Ahsa Oasis region from 1990 to 2025 by utilizing spectral indices derived from multiple satellites. Multi-temporal Landsat imagery (Landsat 5, 8, and 9) was processed in Google Earth Engine (GEE) to derive key biophysical indicators, including the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), land surface temperature (LST), and bare soil index (BSI). Supervised classification techniques were employed to generate LULC maps for each time step, enabling the assessment of spatiotemporal land cover dynamics. In addition, a random forest (RF) machine learning algorithm was applied to accurately quantify and map the distribution of palm trees across the study area. The results showed that NDVI values fluctuated between −0.19 and 0.75 during the period from 1990 to 2025. Higher vegetation density was observed in central and eastern areas, with maximum values of −0.44–0.75 in 2025. The higher LST was observed in 2025, with a range of 34.7 to 54.6 °C, and the lower LST was observed in 1990 with a range 28.7 to 48.34 °C. BSI values decreased from −0.40 to 0.46 between 1990 and 2025 to a more variable range of −0.27 to 0.36, indicating reduced soil exposure. The classification of LULC numerical data shows a rapid rise in urban development of 67.19% and a 25% decrease in vegetation area. Furthermore, the results of the RF model indicate that palm tree area increased by 16.23% from 1990 to 2025, with overall accuracy of 98.15, and kappa coefficient of 0.962. This research highlights that urban expansion impacts environmental indicators such as LST, while the increasing trend of NDVI could support the palm trees expansion. This study finds valuable information for policymakers and land use planners to develop sustainable urban growth strategies, protect agricultural lands, and enhance oasis ecosystem resilience. Combined remote-sensing-based monitoring into regional planning frameworks can inform decision making for balancing urban development, environmental protection, and long-term agricultural sustainability in the Al-Ahsa Oasis. Egon Steinmann’s industrial architecture represents a significant yet insufficiently researched contribution to the development of post-war industrial architecture in Croatia. This paper examines his industrial projects designed between 1947 and 1965 within the context of post-war industrialization and modernization in socialist Yugoslavia. Based on archival documents, historical photographs, field observations, and comparative analysis, the paper first identifies Steinmann’s broader industrial work and then examines six selected industrial complexes in Zagreb. The case studies are compared in terms of their urban context, spatial organization, structural systems, production logistics, daylighting strategies, and architectural expression, highlighting differences between heavy industrial facilities and food-processing plants. A comparison of historical and contemporary orthophotos is further used to evaluate the long-term spatial transformation and adaptability of these industrial sites. The findings demonstrate that Steinmann’s designs were characterized by rational planning, large-span and flexible structures, integration of technological and transport requirements, and the capacity for phased expansion. The continued industrial use and preservation of many of these complexes confirm the lasting value of his architectural and planning concepts, contributing to a broader understanding of Croatian industrial architecture and socialist industrial modernism of the 1950s and 1960s. Background: Odontogenic keratocysts are developmental cysts of the jaws that often remain asymptomatic until they reach considerable size and are most frequently located in the mandibular angle and ramus regions. Due to their high recurrence potential, the optimal treatment approach remains controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate treatment modalities associated with lower recurrence rates in odontogenic keratocysts. Material and Methods: Patients diagnosed with odontogenic keratocyst between 2000 and 2024 at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Gazi University, were retrospectively evaluated. Associations between gender, age, lesion localization, histological subtype, treatment modality, and recurrence were analyzed. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS for Windows (version 27). Results: A total of 291 cases were included, with an overall recurrence rate of 16.2%. The highest recurrence rate was observed in patients treated with enucleation (19.2%), whereas a lower recurrence rate was found in cases treated with marsupialization (5%). No recurrence was observed in patients who underwent resection. A statistically significant association was found between treatment modality and recurrence (p = 0.014). Conclusions: Treatment selection for odontogenic keratocysts should be carefully planned. In the present study, marsupialization was associated with a lower recurrence rate than enucleation in selected cases. However, because of the retrospective design and non-randomized treatment allocation, these findings should be interpreted with caution and should not be considered evidence of a causal relationship. Long-term clinical and radiological follow-up remains essential because of the potential for late recurrence. Full article

Arthrogenic muscle inhibition (AMI), neurophysiological suppression of voluntary quadriceps activation triggered by joint effusion and inflammation, is consistently initiated within hours of any form of knee surgery. If not actively counteracted during the first two postoperative weeks, AMI may drive a cascade of neuromuscular, morphological, and biomechanical deficits that can persist for years, substantially increasing the risk of post-traumatic osteoarthritis, reinjury, and long-term functional disability. Emerging evidence indicates that preoperative patient-related factors, including baseline quadriceps strength, age, body mass index, and physical fitness, further modulate the rehabilitation response and should be considered in planning early postoperative protocols. This narrative review, which was not designed as a systematic review or meta-analysis and therefore does not include formal quality assessment or pooled statistical analysis, evaluates evidence for seven early-phase (0–2 weeks postoperative) knee muscle activation interventions: neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES), isometric quadriceps exercise, blood flow restriction (BFR) training, electromyographic (EMG) biofeedback, open and closed kinetic chain (OKC/CKC) exercise, cryotherapy, and continuous passive motion (CPM). Findings are synthesized against six clinically relevant dimensions, safety in the 0–2 week window, home-based usability, capacity to overcome AMI, requirement for volitional effort, objective monitoring capability, and progressive resistance, to characterize a consistent pattern: no single existing modality simultaneously meets all combined requirements for home deployment, volitional engagement, objective monitoring, and progressive resistance from postoperative day one. This collective unmet need provides direction for future device development and clinical research. Full article

Farmers’ investment decisions can shape their capacity to implement practices consistent with sustainable development objectives. The article identifies the declarative structure of investment decisions on Polish dairy farms based on a survey and diverse theoretical frameworks (resource-based view, institutional approach, real options theory, behavioural theory, and the theory of planned behaviour). The purpose is to identify the determinants of the extent and structure of declared agricultural investments. The authors determined the relationships between declared investments and groups of variables and identified investment axes and interdependencies. Investment decision predictions are founded on logistic regression, an SEM model for relationship structuring, and residual correlation analysis for mapping relationships and evaluating the correlation demasking effect, according to which raw correlations between investment axes may hide underlying residual associations between them. We found that declared farmland investments were associated with milk production volume and appeared to be linked to long-term farm development objectives. The respondents became less keen on investing in livestock production as they aged, whereas older farmers showed a greater propensity to undertake energy-related investments. These results suggest that farmers’ declared investment intentions may be consistent with conditions conducive to achieving sustainable development objectives through their potential association with farm viability, resource-use efficiency, and rural economic development. Our findings may have potential policy relevance by informing the design of public measures aimed at strengthening farms’ adaptive capacity in the context of sustainability transitions. Full article
