This study investigates the effects of Ta doping on the elastic, dielectric, piezoelectric, and electromechanical coupling properties of lithium niobate (LiNbO3, LN) crystals using first-principles calculations. The results show that isovalent substitution of Nb5+ by Ta5+ maintains mechanical stability in all doped systems. Ta incorporation enhances the overall stiffness and deformation resistance, while strengthening ionic displacement polarization and the piezoelectric stress response. The piezoelectric strain constant d33 and electromechanical coupling coefficient k33 exhibit different optimal doping concentrations. d33 reaches 9.548 pC/N at 10% Ta doping, corresponding to a 13.6% improvement over intrinsic LN, whereas k33 reaches a maximum of 0.2569 at 3.33% Ta doping and remains high in the 3.33–6.67% range. This separation originates from the competition among polarization enhancement, elastic stiffness hardening, and nonlinear dielectric growth. Enhanced ionic polarization promotes d33, while excessive dielectric energy storage and increased stiffness suppress effective electromechanical energy conversion. These results reveal the microscopic mechanism governing composition-dependent electromechanical tuning in Ta-doped LN crystals. Accordingly, 10% Ta is suitable for improving strain sensitivity, whereas 3.33–6.67% Ta is preferable for optimizing energy conversion efficiency in LN-based sensors, actuators, transducers, and resonators. Electro-optic frequency combs (EOFCs), generated through the microwave-driven modulation of continuous-wave lasers, have emerged as a highly reconfigurable and system-compatible class of optical frequency combs with growing importance in microwave photonics, coherent communications, spectroscopy, and precision metrology. In contrast to mode-locked lasers and Kerr microresonator combs, EOFCs offer electrically programmable repetition rates, deterministic phase coherence, and intrinsic compatibility with radiofrequency electronic systems, making them particularly attractive for integrated and application-oriented implementations. As EOFCs evolve toward broader bandwidths, lower power consumption, and full on-chip integration, their achievable performance is increasingly constrained by the interplay between electro-optic physical mechanisms, modulator architectures, and material platform properties. This review establishes a unified analytical framework that systematically connects EOFC generation mechanisms, device configurations, key performance metrics, and platform-level limitations. We first summarize the fundamental electro-optic effects underpinning EOFC generation and analytically examine representative modulator architectures, including phase modulators, Mach–Zehnder modulators, and microresonator-based schemes, to clarify their respective comb-generation characteristics. Key performance determinants, such as modulation depth, bandwidth, electro-optic efficiency, and optical loss, are then discussed to elucidate their coupled influence on comb-line count, spectral flatness, output power, and phase noise. Subsequently, the performance of EOFCs implemented on major integrated platforms, including Silicon on Insulator (SOI), Indium Phosphide on Insulator (InPOI), Lithium Niobate on Insulator (LNOI), and Lithium Tantalate on Insulator (LTOI), is comparatively reviewed to highlight the material-dependent advantages and constraints. Finally, emerging directions based on heterogeneous integration and ferroelectric materials with ultrahigh electro-optic coefficients are discussed as promising pathways to overcome the current performance bottlenecks. This review provides clear physical insights and engineering guidance for the future development of high-performance, integrated EOFC systems. Full article

We demonstrate efficient and thermally stable second-harmonic generation (SHG) in x-cut thin-film lithium tantalate (TFLT) ridge waveguides via modal phase matching (MPM). The experimental characterizations reveal a normalized conversion efficiency (NCE) of 17.2% W−1 cm−2 in a 4 mm long waveguide. Notably, the device exhibits a temperature-dependent phase-matching wavelength slope of 0.007 nm/°C, which shows a two-orders-of-magnitude improvement in thermal stability over conventional periodically poled lithium niobate/lithium tantalate optical devices. Our work indicates that MPM in TFLT is an attractive strategy for integrated nonlinear optical applications, particularly for the on-chip frequency conversion of both classical and quantum light signals without on-chip domain-poling processes. Oxide materials represent a versatile and fundamental platform for photonics, allowing the manipulation of light through optical property engineering. This review focuses mainly on the physics and applications of simple oxides, analysing their use in the realisation of dielectric mirrors, in particular of distributed Bragg reflectors, and planar microcavities. Critical aspects regarding the design of multilayer structures, the control of optical confinement and the improvement of the quality factor in passive devices are discussed. However, to provide a complete picture of the evolution of the field, the section dedicated to oxide materials anticipates future directions dominated by complex oxides such as lithium niobate, lithium tantalate and barium titanate required for active photonics. In this context, a necessary technological paradigm shift is highlighted: the transition from the current use of film-on-insulator platforms to the direct epitaxial growth of these functional materials, an essential step for the scalability and monolithic integration of future photonic devices. This work addresses the challenge of realizing broadband, low-loss fiber-to-waveguide coupling in the short-wavelength near-infrared range (700–1050 nm), where the required fine structural dimensions and taper tips approach or even exceed current fabrication limits, resulting in tight fabrication tolerances and degraded coupling efficiency. We propose a broadband trilayer adiabatic edge coupler on a thin-film lithium tantalate platform that requires only two standard lithography and etching steps. The design integrates a crossed bilayer taper and a dual-core mode converter to achieve adiabatic mode transformation from a ridge to a thin strip waveguide, ensuring excellent fabrication tolerance and process simplicity. Simulations predict a minimum coupling loss of 0.57 dB at 850 nm, which includes the transmission through the complete edge-coupler structure, along with a 0.5-dB bandwidth exceeding 140 nm. The proposed structure provides a broadband, low-loss, and fabrication-tolerant interface for short-wavelength photonic systems such as quantum photonics, biosensing, and visible-light communications. The polar oxide Lithium Niobate Tantalate is probed using time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy with the goal of revealing an initial structural insight into the solid solution by analyzing the spectral properties and dynamics of radiatively decaying self-localization phenomena. A blue-green luminescence band can be induced by ultraviolet nanosecond laser pulses with a temperature-dependent intensity and spectral width, pointing to the radiative decay of optically generated self-trapped excitons as its origin, i.e., electron–hole pairs with strong coupling to either the NbO6- or TaO6-octahedra. The luminescence decay takes place in the microsecond time range and deviates significantly from a single exponential behavior, so the determined lifetime constants of up to ≈70 μs and stretching factors (1/3–1/5) are validated in more detail using alternative evaluation methods. We discuss our findings, considering the interplay of radiative and non-radiative decay channels, the transition from self-trapped to free excitons, and the presence of a structural disorder of the oxygen octahedra in the solid solutions. Overall, our results suggest self-trapped excitons as local probes for an initial structural elucidation and provide essential information about further experimental and theoretical studies on the atomic structure of Lithium Niobate Tantalate, but also for improving the crystal quality in the framework of applications in photonics and quantum optics. Lithium tantalate (LT) exhibits nonlinear optical properties that are comparable to those of lithium niobate (LN), yet the former surpasses the latter in several respects. These include an enhanced optical damage threshold, a wider transparency range, and lower birefringence. Consequently, LT is an excellent material for optical frequency conversion applications. In this study, we have devised a novel device based on thin-film lithium tantalate (TFLT) for the efficient generation of second-harmonic waves. The design employs modal phase-matching (MPM), which circumvents the intricacies of conventional poling techniques, and attains a normalised conversion efficiency of 120% W−1cm−2. In order to address the challenges presented by higher-order modes, a mode converter with an insertion loss of less than 0.1 dB has been developed, thereby ensuring the efficient utilisation of the second harmonic. This study not only demonstrates the potential of TFLT for high-performance SHG, but also promotes the development of integrated nonlinear TFLT platforms. Full article

The tuning of second (SHG) and third (THG) harmonic emission is studied in the model system LiNb 1xTa xO 3 (0x1, LNT) between the established edge compositions lithium niobate (LiNbO 3, x=0, LN) and lithium tantalate (LiTaO 3, x=1, LT). Thus, the existence of optical nonlinearities of the second and third order is demonstrated in the ferroelectric solid solution system, and the question about the suitability of LNT in the field of nonlinear and quantum optics, in particular as a promising nonlinear optical material for frequency conversion with tunable composition, is addressed. For this purpose, harmonic generation is studied in nanosized crystallites of mechanochemically synthesized LNT using nonlinear diffuse reflectometry with wavelength-tunable fundamental femtosecond laser pulses from 1200 nm to 2000 nm. As a result, a gap-free harmonic emission is validated that accords with the theoretically expected energy relations, dependencies on intensity and wavelength, as well as spectral bandwidths for harmonic generation. The SHG/THG harmonic ratio ≫1 is characteristic of the ferroelectric bulk nature of the LNT nanocrystallites. We can conclude that LNT is particularly attractive for applications in nonlinear optics that benefit from the possibility of the composition-dependent control of mechanical, electrical, and/or optical properties. In the current work, nanocrystalline powders with different compositions, namely Li0.98Pr0.02NbO3, Li0.93Pr0.02Mg0.05NbO3 and Li0.98Pr0.02TaO3 were synthesized for the first time using the method of high-energy ball milling of the starting materials (Li2CO3, Nb2O5, Ta2O5, MgO, Pr6O11), followed by high-temperature annealing. XRD data analysis confirmed the absence of parasitic phases in the obtained nanocrystalline compounds. The estimated particle sizes ranged from 20 to 80 nm. From the obtained nanopowders, ceramic samples were prepared using specially developed equipment, which allowed for pressing at elevated temperatures with a simultaneous application of a constant electric field. The obtained photoluminescence spectra exhibit characteristic features of Pr3+ ions in the crystal structure of LiNbO3 and LiTaO3 and are most efficiently excited by UV light. Samples pressed with an electric field application show higher intensity of photoluminescence. Investigations of the temperature dependence of electrical conductivity of the Li0.98Pr0.02NbO3 sample, pressed with the application of an electric field, indicate that the conductivity mechanism is similar to that of LiNbO3 single crystals and, at high temperatures, is attributed to the lithium conduction mechanism. We report a spectroscopic investigation of potassium–lithium–tantalate–niobate (KTN:Li) across its room-temperature ferroelectric phase transition, when the sample manifests a supercrystal phase. Reflection and transmission results indicate an unexpected temperature-dependent enhancement of average index of refraction from 450 nm to 1100 nm, with no appreciable accompanying increase in absorption. Second-harmonic generation and phase-contrast imaging indicate that the enhancement is correlated to ferroelectric domains and highly localized at the supercrystal lattice sites. Implementing a two-component effective medium model, the response of each lattice site is found to be compatible with giant broadband refraction. Full article

Surface acoustic waves (SAWs) are the guided waves that propagate along the top surface of a material with wave vectors orthogonal to the normal direction to the surface. Based on these waves, SAW sensors are conceptualized by employing piezoelectric crystals where the guided elastodynamic waves are generated through an electromechanical coupling. Electromechanical coupling in both active and passive modes is achieved by integrating interdigitated electrode transducers (IDT) with the piezoelectric crystals. Innovative meta-designs of the periodic IDTs define the functionality and application of SAW sensors. This review article presents the physics of guided surface acoustic waves and the piezoelectric materials used for designing SAW sensors. Then, how the piezoelectric materials and cuts could alter the functionality of the sensors is explained. The article summarizes a few key configurations of the electrodes and respective guidelines for generating different guided wave patterns such that new applications can be foreseen. Finally, the article explores the applications of SAW sensors and their progress in the fields of biomedical, microfluidics, chemical, and mechano-biological applications along with their crucial roles and potential plans for improvements in the long-term future in the field of science and technology. All possible experimental geometries of the piezo-optic effect in crystals of trigonal symmetry are studied in detail through the interferometric technique, and the corresponding expressions for the calculation of piezo-optic coefficients (POCs) πim and some sums of πim based on experimental data obtained from the samples of direct and X/45°-cuts are given. The reliability of the values of POCs is proven by the convergence of πim obtained from different experimental geometries as well as by the convergence of some sums of POCs. Because both the signs and the absolute values of POCs π14 and π41 are defined by the choice of the right crystal-physics coordinate system, we here use the system whereby the condition S14 > 0 is fulfilled (S14 is an elastic compliance coefficient). The absolute value and the sign of S14 are determined by piezo-optic interferometric method from two experimental geometries. The errors of POCs are calculated as mean square values of the errors of the half-wave stresses and the elastic term. All components of the matrix of elasto-optic coefficients pin are calculated based on POCs and elastic stiffness coefficients. The technique is tested on LiTaO3 crystal. The obtained results are compared with the corresponding data for trigonal LiNbO3 and Ca3TaGa3Si2O14 crystals. Full article

X-ray and neutron diffraction studies succeeded in the 1960s to determine the principal structural properties of congruent lithium niobate. However, the nature of the intrinsic defects related to the non-stoichiometry of this material remained an object of controversial discussion. In addition, the incorporation mechanism for dopants in the crystal lattice, showing a solubility range from about 0.1 mol% for rare earths to 9 mol% for some elements (e.g., Ti and Mg), stayed unresolved. Various different models for the formation of these defect structures were developed and required experimental verification. In this paper, we review the outstanding role of nuclear physics based methods in the process of unveiling the kind of intrinsic defects formed in congruent lithium niobate and the rules governing the incorporation of dopants. Complementary results in the isostructural compound lithium tantalate are reviewed for the case of the ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition. We focus especially on the use of ion beam analysis under channeling conditions for the direct determination of dopant lattice sites and intrinsic defects and on Perturbed Angular Correlation measurements probing the local environment of dopants in the host lattice yielding independent and complementary information.
