Western written travel narratives are a byproduct of the privileging of vision as the primary means of knowledge production, an epistemology often imposed on indigenous peoples through colonial practices. In contrast, indigenous cultures in Brazil have long relied on listening as a central way of engaging with their environment. In the present essay, I examine how listening practices appear in the written accounts produced by members of three foreign river expeditions in Brazil from the 16th to the 20th century. I analyzed travel accounts from Gaspar de Carvajal’s Relación del Nuevo Descubrimiento del Famoso Río Grande (XVI century), Hercules Florence’s Voyage Fluvial du Tieté à l’Amazone (XIX), and Theodore Roosevelt’s In the Jungles of Brazil (XX). To explore what these travelers might have heard, I also collaborated with a sound designer to create a soundscape using actual recordings of local fauna and indigenous chants and music. The results show a variety of listening modes put into practice such as conquest-driven, scientific observation, contemplation, and hunting-focused and aesthetic appreciation. These narratives illustrate how European epistemologies reinforced Western dominance by shaping both colonial encounters and scientific approaches to Brazilian wilderness exploration. Full article

This essay argues for the importance of the overlooked theme of natality in the poetry of Louise Glück. In its guise as mortality, human finitude causes pain through the permanence of death; in its guise as natality, finitude can also be an occasion for wonder at the unlikely chance of having been born, and the contingency and possibility for beginning something new associated with natality by Hannah Arendt and others. In Glück’s work, the theme of natality comes across in poems concerning pregnancy, birth, infants, children, and mothers. Several of her poems feature a hybrid identification as child and as mother, a hybridity that enables the apprehension of natality and that leads to a mode of poetic speech that originates in, and is imbricated with, listening as an alternative to knowing. This essay examines some of Glück’s earlier poetry in these terms before turning to her 2006 volume Averno, which retells the myth of Persephone. Undeniably preoccupied with death, Averno is, I argue, equally concerned with birth, mindful that human finitude itself is double or hybrid. Although many poems cast Demeter as a smothering, possessive mother, Averno, at key moments, takes into account a mother’s perspective as well as a child’s. This hybrid identification gives rise to the emergence of an unexpected lyric voice that both listens and sings. Full article

Hearing difficulty in noise can occur in 10–15% of listeners with typical hearing in the general population of the United States. Using one’s smartphone as a remote microphone (RM) system with the AirPods Pro (AP) may be considered an assistive device given its wide availability and potentially lower price. To evaluate this possibility, the accuracy of voice-to-text transcription for sentences presented in noise was compared, when KEMAR wore an AP receiver connected to an iPhone set to function as an RM system, to the accuracy obtained when it wore a sophisticated Phonak Roger RM system. A ten-sentence list was presented for six technology arrangements at three signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs; +5, 0, and −5 dB) in two types of noise (speech-shaped and babble noise). Each sentence was transcribed by Otter AI to obtain an overall percent accuracy for each condition. At the most challenging SNR (−5 dB SNR) across both noise types, the Roger system and smartphone/AP set to noise cancelation mode showed significantly higher accuracy relative to the condition when the smartphone/AP was in transparency mode. However, the major limitation of Bluetooth signal delay when using the AP/smartphone system would require further investigation in real-world settings with human users. Full article

Background: Transparency mode in hearables aims to maintain environmental awareness by transmitting external sounds through built-in microphones and speakers. While technical assessments have documented acoustic alterations in these devices, their impact on spatial hearing abilities under realistic listening conditions remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate how transparency mode affects sound localization performance with and without background noise. Methods: Ten normal-hearing adults completed sound localization tasks across azimuth (±90°) and elevation (±30°) with and without background noise. Performance was assessed with and without AirPods Pro in transparency mode. Sound localization performance was evaluated through linear regression analysis and mean absolute errors. Head-Related Transfer Function measurements quantified changes in binaural and spectral cues. Results: While interaural time differences were largely preserved, transparency mode introduced systematic alterations in level differences (up to 8 dB) and eliminated spectral cues above 5 kHz. These modifications resulted in increased localization errors, particularly for elevation perception and in noise. Mean absolute errors increased from 6.81° to 19.6° in azimuth and from 6.79° to 19.4° in elevation without background noise, with further degradation at lower SNRs (p < 0.05). Response times were affected by background noise (p < 0.001) but not by device use. Conclusions: Current transparency mode implementation significantly compromises spatial hearing abilities, particularly in noisy environments typical of everyday listening situations. These findings highlight the need for technological improvements in maintaining natural spatial cues through transparency mode, as current limitations may impact user safety and communication in real-world environments. This paper pursues a phenomenological investigation of the nature of absorbed listening in Western, classical music concert audiences. This investigation is based on a data-set of 16 in-depth phenomenological interviews with audience members from three classical concerts with the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra and the Norwegian Radio Orchestra conducted in spring 2024. We identify seven major themes, namely “sharedness”, “attention”, “spontaneous thought/mental imagery”, “modes of listening” “absorption”, “distraction”, and “strong emotional experiences”, and interpret these in light of relevant ideas in phenomenology, cognitive psychology, and ecological aesthetics, more precisely “passive synthesis” from Husserl, the “sense of agency” from Gallagher, and “mind surfing” from Høffding, Nielsen, and Laeng. We show that, like absorbed musical performance, absorbed musical listening comes in many shapes and can be grasped as instantiating variations of passive synthesis, the sense of agency, and mind surfing. We conclude that absorbed listening circles around a kind of paradox of passivity, characterised by a sense of loss of egoic control arising from particular forms of invested, intensive perceptual, cognitive, and affective engagement. The spontaneous use of verbal expressions to articulate and describe abstract auditory phenomena in everyday interactions is an inherent aspect of human nature. This occurs without the structured conditions typically required in controlled laboratory environments, relying instead on intuitive and spontaneous modes of expression. This study explores the relationship between auditory perception and descriptive language for abstract sounds. These sounds, synthesized without identifiable sources or musical structures, allow listeners to engage with sound perception free from external references. The investigation of correlations between subjective descriptors (e.g., “rough”, “bright”) and physical sound attributes (e.g., spectral and dynamic properties) reveals significant cross-modal linguistic associations in auditory perception. An international survey with a diverse group of participants revealed that listeners often draw on other sensory domains to describe sounds, suggesting a robust cross-modal basis for auditory descriptors. Moreover, the findings indicate a correlation between subjective descriptors and objective sound wave properties, demonstrating the effectiveness of abstract sounds in guiding listeners’ attention to intrinsic qualities. These results could support the development of new paradigms in sound analysis and manipulation, with applications in artistic, educational, and analytical contexts. This multidisciplinary approach may provide the foundation for a perceptual framework for sound analysis, to be tested and refined through theoretical modelling and experimental validation. Mobile devices, such as smartphones and laptops, face energy consumption challenges due to battery limitations, with Wi-Fi being one of the major sources of energy consumption in these devices. The IEEE 802.11 standard addresses this issue with Power Saving Mode (PSM), which reduces power consumption but increases latency. To mitigate this latency, Adaptive-PSM (A-PSM) dynamically switches between PSM and Constantly Awake Mode (CAM); however, the associated Idle Listening (IL) process still results in high energy consumption. Various strategies have been proposed to optimize IL time; however, Medium Access Control (MAC)-level contention and network delays limit their effectiveness. To overcome these limitations, we propose MILD (Minimizing Idle Listening energy consumption via Down-clocking), a novel scheme that reduces energy consumption without compromising throughput. MILD introduces specialized preambles for Packet Arrival Detection (PAD) and Device Address Recognition (DAR), allowing the client to operate in a down-clocked state during IL and switch to full clocking only when necessary. Experimental results demonstrate that MILD reduces energy consumption by up to 23.6% while maintaining a minimal throughput loss of 12.5%, outperforming existing schemes. Full article

Background: Treating psychiatric illnesses or influencing mental states with neurofeedback is challenging, likely due to the limited spatial specificity of EEG and the complications arising from the inadequate signal-to-noise ratio reduction of single-trial EEG. Objective: This pilot study aimed to investigate the feasibility of employing a binaural pulse mode-modulation (BPM) device to reduce anxiety by self-regulation. We desired to determine whether anxiety could be significantly reduced or regulated using BPM-type systems. Methods: Sixty adult participants were examined with self-reported anxiety tests (COVID Stress Scale, Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7, Beck Depression Inventory-II), which were completed before treatment, after four weeks, and after 12 weeks post-treatment. This BPM device produced two frequencies which combined to create a binaural pulse through differential auditory tone presentations. The participant calibrated the suitable target tone for optimal treatment efficacy. Each participant adjusted the binaural pulse to enhance the emotional intensity felt when envisioning an experience with comparable emotional significance or while performing a cognitive task while concurrently listening to music. The “treatment” relied on the individual’s regulation of binaural pulses to obtain the desired state. The training concentrated on particular facets of their psychological challenges while listening to an auditory tone, adjusting a knob until the sound amplified the intended emotional state. Another knob was turned to intensify the emotional state associated with distress reduction. Results: On the self-reported measures, the BPM treatment group was significantly better than the sham treatment (control) groups (p < 0.01). These findings indicate that over the four-week intervention period, BPM was similarly effective. On the GAD-7, the significant difference over time was noted before treatment and at the end of treatment for the experimental group, with the average GAD-7 score at the end of treatment being significantly lower (p < 0.01). Conclusions: BPM seems to induce a short-term alteration in self-reported distress levels during therapy. This study’s limitations are examined, and recommendations for future research are provided. Intelligent systems developed under the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm offer solutions for various social and productive scenarios. Voice assistants (VAs), as part of IoT-based systems, facilitate task execution in a simple and automated manner, from entertainment to critical activities. Lithium batteries often power these devices. However, their energy consumption can be high due to the need to remain in continuous listening mode and the time it takes to search for and deliver responses from the Internet. This work proposes the implementation of a VA through Artificial Intelligence (AI) training and using cache memory to minimize response time and reduce energy consumption. First, the difference in energy consumption between VAs in active and passive states is experimentally verified. Subsequently, a communication architecture and a model representing the behavior of VAs are presented, from which a metric is developed to evaluate the energy consumption of these devices. The cache-enabled prototype shows a reduction in response time and energy expenditure (comparing the results of cloud-based VA and cache-based VA), several times lower according to the developed metric, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed system. This development could be a viable solution for areas with limited power sources, low coverage, and mobility situations that affect internet connectivity. Full article

Adding occupants to an enclosed space often leads to perceptible changes in the sound field and, therefore, speech intelligibility; however, this issue has not yet been examined in automotive cabins. This study investigated the effect of occupants in an automotive cabin on SI. Binaural room impulse responses (BRIRs) were measured in an automotive cabin with an artificial mouth and dummy head under different speaker–listener position configurations and occupancy modes. Based on the measured BRIRs, the speech transmission index (STI) was determined, and subjective speech–reception thresholds (SRTs) in Mandarin Chinese were assessed. The results indicate that speech intelligibility mostly decreased slightly after adding additional occupants. In most cases, the occupants did not significantly affect speech intelligibility, with STI variations of no more than the just-noticeable difference and SRT variation within 1 dB. When the listener was in the back-right seat, the effect of the occupants on speech intelligibility could not be ignored, with STI variations of up to 0.07 and an SRT variation of 2 dB under different occupancy modes. In addition, the influence of front-row passengers on the speech intelligibility of rear-row listeners was extremely small, and vice versa. Furthermore, altering the distribution of occupants had an effect comparable to changing the number of occupants. Full article

Friedrich Hölderlin’s late hymns Patmos (first version) and Mnemosyne (early draft) create an intriguing tension between the “solid letter” that must be deciphered faithfully and the evocation of a “sounding script” that, together with an equally enigmatic “echo”, refuses direct hermeneutic understanding. At the point where the reader’s interpretive desire threatens to fail, musical settings like Peter Ruzicka’s MNEMOSYNE: Remembrance and Forgetting can be listened to as an attempt to actualize what Hölderlin’s original writing must leave unrealizable: the presence of real sound. In this audio-hermeneutic transfer, the act of listening opens up possibilities of the audible that are promised by the literary text without being actualized. The present essay interrogates this intermedial translatability between letter and sound by isolating a few selected passages from the facsimile reproduction of Hölderlin’s palimpsestic manuscript of multiple revisions, as provided by the Frankfurter Ausgabe. Mindful of the discontinuities and gaps in the original poems, my own analysis foregrounds its own fragmentary mode of reading Hölderlin’s poetry and listening to Ruzicka’s music. Full article

Sound localization is a crucial aspect of human auditory perception. VR (virtual reality) technologies provide immersive audio platforms that allow human listeners to experience natural sounds based on their ability to localize sound. However, the simulations of sound generated by these platforms, which are based on the general head-related transfer function (HRTF), often lack accuracy in terms of individual sound perception and localization due to significant individual differences in this function. In this study, we aimed to investigate the disparities between the perceived locations of sound sources by users and the locations generated by the platform. Our goal was to determine if it is possible to train users to adapt to the platform-generated sound sources. We utilized the Microsoft HoloLens 2 virtual platform and collected data from 12 subjects based on six separate training sessions arranged in 2 weeks. We employed three modes of training to assess their effects on sound localization, in particular for studying the impacts of multimodal error, visual, and sound guidance in combination with kinesthetic/postural guidance, on the effectiveness of the training. We analyzed the collected data in terms of the training effect between pre- and post-sessions as well as the retention effect between two separate sessions based on subject-wise paired statistics. Our findings indicate that, as far as the training effect between pre- and post-sessions is concerned, the effect is proven to be statistically significant, in particular in the case wherein kinesthetic/postural guidance is mixed with visual and sound guidance. Conversely, visual error guidance alone was found to be largely ineffective. On the other hand, as far as the retention effect between two separate sessions is concerned, we could not find any meaningful statistical implication on the effect for all three error guidance modes out of the 2-week session of training. These findings can contribute to the improvement of VR technologies by ensuring they are designed to optimize human sound localization abilities. Full article

This paper proposes a novel approach to audio game design by introducing the concept of speech puzzles (spuzzles) to describe the utilisation of recorded voice for the creation of audio puzzles in ways that challenge players’ different listening modes. In the fields of audio games and audio-interactive applications, speech serves instructive, descriptive, narrative, and in some cases—in the form of hints or quizzes—gameplay purposes by addressing users through language. The suggested approach of spuzzles extends this potential by including, besides encoded meaning, the acoustic properties of sound, thus engaging the user’s causal and reduced listening modes in parallel with the semantic listening mode. An audio game consisting of four inherently different spuzzles was designed as proof of concept and tested by seven third-year students of Audiovisual Arts, who elaborated on their experience through a focus group semi-structured discussion. Despite their difficulty, the spuzzles were well accepted by most of the participants (5/7), whereas all participants agreed on their acoustic richness, need for concentration, and independence from pre-existing musical knowledge. Therefore, the authors suggest that the proposed design approach could serve as a paradigm for future research in the design of complex audio-based game mechanics. Full article

Dorsal Practices is a process-based, interdisciplinary artistic collaboration between choreographer Katrina Brown and writer–artist Emma Cocker. This research enquiry explores the notion of dorsality and the cultivation of a back-oriented awareness in relation to how we as sentient bodies orientate to the self, others (human, more-than-human), and interconnected world. Since 2021, Dorsal Practices has unfolded through the interrelation of three fields of experimental, embodied research practice: movement-based practices, conversation practices, and experimental reading practices. Dorsal Practices explores how the tilt or inclination towards dorsal (dis)orientation might enable new modes of thinking–perceiving and being–with, and more connected, sustainable ways of living and aliveness based on the reciprocal, entangled relationship between self/environment. We ask: How does the cultivation of a back-oriented awareness and attitude shape and inform our embodied, affective, and relational experience of being-in-the-world? Rather than a mode of withdrawal, of turning one’s back, how might a back-leaning orientation support an open, receptive ethics of relation? Central to this enquiry is an attempt to explore how different linguistic practices might be developed in fidelity to the embodied experiences of dorsality: how the experiences of listening, languaging, even thinking, might be shaped differently through this embodied tilt of awareness and attention towards the back. The Reverberation of the Sacred Gurbani’s Vibrations at the Darbar Sahib: The Issue of Its Television Broadcasting

This essay will examine the contemporary issue of the television broadcasting of the sacred Gurbani from the Darbar Sahib to set the stage for understanding the historical context of the musical sessions (chauṅkīs) of devotional singing, followed by the process of decolonizing the musical performances in modern times, including religious aesthetics and sacred time and the processional chauṅkīs in the Darbar Sahib Complex. The continuous singing of the Guru’s hymns (Gurbani kirtan) resounds inside the Darbar Sahib (“the Divine Court”), popularly known as the Golden Temple of Amritsar. This special mode of worship consists of singing and listening to the hymns of the Guru Granth Sahib, the sacred scripture of the Sikhs. The heart of Sikh devotional experience lies in the performance of scriptural hymns in a congregational setting. Notably, different sessions of devotional singing go on day and night from 2.45 a.m. to 10.45 p.m. at the Golden Temple, following a celebrated tradition established more than four centuries ago by the Fifth Sikh Guru, Guru Arjan. Even during the four-hour period of cleaning the sanctum sanctorum at midnight, the devotees recite hymns from memory, thereby making the Darbar Sahib a unique place where vibrations of sacred sound reverberate continuously for twenty-four hours a day.
