The present research analyzed the nonlinear vibration of a CNTRC embedded in a nonlinear Winkler–Pasternak foundation in the presence of an electromagnetic actuator and mechanical impact. A higher-order shear deformation beam theory was applied to various models, as well as Euler–Bernoulli, Timoshenko, Reddy, and other beams, using a unified NSGT. The governing equations were obtained based on the extended shear and normal strain component of the von Karman theory and a Hamilton principle. The system was discretized by means of the Galerkin–Bubnov procedure, and the OAFM was applied to solve a complex nonlinear problem. The buckling and bending problems were studied analytically by using the HPM, the Galerkin method in combination with the weighted residual method, and finally, by the optimization of results for a simply supported composite beam. These results were validated by comparing our results for the linear problem with those available in literature, and a good agreement was proved. The influence of some parameters was examined. The results obtained for the extended models of the Euler–Bernoulli and Timoshenko beams were almost the same for the linear cases, but the results of the nonlinear cases were substantially different in comparison with the results obtained for the linear cases. The acoustically actuated antenna technology enables a significant reduction in antenna dimension, facilitating miniaturization of ground-penetrating radar systems in the very high-frequency (VHF) band. However, the current acoustically actuated antennas suffer from narrow bandwidth and low range resolution. To address this issue, this paper proposed a three-dimensional (3D) localization method for underground targets, which combined two-dimensional (2D) array direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation with continuous spatial sampling without relying on range resolution. By leveraging the small dimension of acoustically actuated antennas, a 2D uniform linear array was formed to obtain the target’s angle using DOA estimation. Based on the variation pattern of 2D angles in continuous spatial sampling, the genetic algorithm was employed to estimate the 3D coordinates of underground targets. The numerical simulation results indicated that the root mean square error (RMSE) of the proposed 3D localization method is 1.68 cm, which outperforms conventional methods that utilize wideband frequency-modulated pulse signals with hyperbolic vertex detection in theoretical localization accuracy, while also demonstrating good robustness. The gprMax electromagnetic simulation results further confirmed that this method can effectively localize multiple targets in ideal homogeneous underground media. Full article

The growing interest in soft robotics arises from their unique ability to perform tasks beyond the capabilities of rigid robots, with soft actuators playing a central role in this innovation. Among these, electromagnetic soft actuators (ESAs) stand out for their fast response, simple control mechanisms, and compact design. Analytical and experimental studies indicate that smaller ESAs enhance the force per unit cross-sectional area (F/CSA) without compromising force efficiency. This work uses the magnetic vector potential (MVP) to calculate the magnetic field of an ESA, which is then used to derive the actuator’s generated force. A mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) optimization framework is introduced to maximize the ESA’s F/CSA. Unlike prior methods that independently optimized parameters, such as ESA length and permanent magnet diameter, this study jointly optimizes these parameters to achieve a more efficient and effective design. To validate the proposed framework, finite element-based COMSOL 5.4 is used to simulate the magnetic field and generated force, ensuring consistency between MVP-based calculations and the physical model. Additionally, simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of MINLP optimization in identifying the optimal design parameters for maximizing the F/CSA of the ESA. The development of chassis technologies has pushed significant focus towards electrification for enhanced vehicle efficiency, flexibility, safety, and performance. In this context, the suspension represents a key system, as it strongly influences both vehicle dynamics and comfort. The trend is to replace the usual hydraulic damper with mechatronic actuators. Rotary electromagnetic shock absorbers are among these solutions, featuring a rotary electric machine and a proper rotary-to-linear transmission stage. Far from being ideal force sources, these actuators may introduce inertial, compliance, and friction phenomena to the suspension. This paper proposes a generalized equivalent model to reproduce the mechanical behavior of electromagnetic shock absorbers. The formulation of this tool helps compare different shock absorber technologies in terms of their dynamic response. Furthermore, it can be used to synthesize control strategies that account for intrinsic limitations of chassis actuators. Full article

This study proposes the design of a hybrid reluctance-actuated fast steering mirror (HRAFSM) using Maxwell’s electromagnetic normal stress principle. Strain gauges were attached to the flexible supports as sensors for measuring the rotation angles. According to Maxwell’s stress tensor theory and the theory of vibration mechanics, we obtained the dynamic equation of the HRAFSM in the uniaxial direction to investigate the relationship between the input current and the output angle of the entire system. Further, we propose a control algorithm combining proportional-integral-derivative (PID) and adaptive inverse control (AIC) to achieve high-precision control. We established an experimental system for testing and validation of the control method. The experimental results showed that the designed HRAFSM can achieve the expected rotation angle of ±1.5 mrad, and revealed a linear relationship between the rotation angle of the two axes and their corresponding strain voltages. The effectiveness of the designed controller was verified, and the amplitude tracking errors of the x- and y-axes were 0.1% and 0.14%, respectively. Full article

The electromagnetic characteristics of a single-phase permanent magnet linear oscillation actuator are analyzed by the finite element method. Firstly, the basic structure and operation principle of the linear oscillation actuator are introduced. The internal stator slot and arc tooth are used to reduce the detent force. According to the principle of electromagnetic fields, the electromagnetic field equation is listed and the function of the motor is deduced. At the same time, the eight-node hexahedral element is used to calculate the listed universal functions, and the inductance, flux linkage, induced electromotive force and electromagnetic force of the motor are deduced. The electromagnetic field of the motor is simulated by two-dimensional and three-dimensional finite element methods, and the accuracy of the calculation results of the electromagnetic characteristics of the cylindrical linear oscillation motor by the two methods is compared and analyzed. Finally, an experimental prototype was developed and the no-load characteristics of the motor were tested using the existing linear motor towing method. By comparing the experimental and simulation results, the accuracy of the theoretical analysis and the rationality of the motor design are verified. Full article

Enhancing the transparency of high-transmission-ratio linear actuators is crucial for improving the safety and capability of high-force robotic systems having physical contact with humans in unstructured environments. However, realizing such enhancement is challenging. A proposed solution for active body weight support systems involves employing a macro–mini linear actuator incorporating an electrorheological-fluid brake to connect a high-force unit with an agile, highly back-drivable unit. This paper introduces the use of an electromagnetic (EM) brake with reduced rotor inertia to address this challenge. The increased torque capacity of the EM brake enables integration with a low-gear-ratio linear transmission. The agile translation of the endpoint is propelled by a low-inertia motor (referred to as the “mini”) via a pulley-belt mechanism to achieve high transparency. The rotor of the EM brake is linked to the pulley. Damping modulation under high driving force is achieved through the adjustment of the brake torque relative to the rotational speed of the pulley. When the brake is engaged, it prevents any relative motion between the endpoint and the moving carrier. The endpoint is fully controlled by the ball screw of the high-force unit, referred to as the “macro”. A scaled prototype was constructed to experimentally characterize the damping force generated by the mini motor and the EM brake. The macro–mini linear actuator, equipped with an intrinsic failsafe feature, can be utilized for active body weight support systems that demand high antigravity force. Full article

Aiming at the requirements of distributed braking and advanced automatic driving, a brake-by-wire unit based on a direct drive pump–valve cooperative is proposed. To realize the wheel cylinder pressure regulation, the hydraulic pump is directly driven by the electromagnetic linear actuator coordinates with the active valve. It has the advantages of rapid response and no deterioration of wheel side space and unsprung mass. Firstly, by analyzing the working characteristics and braking performance requirements of the braking unit, the key parameters of the system are matched. Then, in order to ensure the accuracy of the simulation model, the co-simulation model of the brake unit is established based on the Simulink-AMESim co-simulation platform. Then, the influence law of key parameters on the control performance is analyzed. Finally, the experimental platform of the brake unit is established. The accuracy of the co-simulation model and the feasibility of the brake-by-wire unit based on direct drive pump–valve cooperative are verified through the pressure control experiment and ABS simulation, which shows that the braking unit has good dynamic response and steady-state tracking effect. Saving energy from domestic appliances is a focus in the effort to combat energy challenges. Linear compressors are a more efficient alternative to the traditional compressors used in refrigerators, which account for 20–40% of all residential electricity use. This article investigates the new topology of the moving magnet (MM), dual-stator single-mover linear oscillating actuator (DSSM-LOA) for linear compressor application. Both the stators were C-shaped, with coils looped across their end sides. Two permanent magnets (PMs) that were axially magnetized were housed on the mover. The PM structural shape significantly affected its fabrication cost and magnitude of magnetic flux density (B). The DSSM-LOA makes use of axially magnetized rectangular-shaped PMs because they are inexpensive and generate high electromagnetic (EM) force density. End ferromagnetic core materials were used to improve the magnetic flux, linking from the stator to the mover. All the design parameters were optimized through parametric analysis using the finite parametric sweep method. Parameters present within the three primary parameters (length, height, and depth) that were assumed constants were optimized, and the optimal dimensions were selected based on the EM force. The investigated DSSM-LOA was contrasted with traditional LOA designs, and they showed significant improvement in EM force per ampere, generally named motor constant (MC), MC per PM mass, MC density, cogging force, and stroke. Additionally, the proposed DSSM-LOA had a simple structure and low cost, and it operated in a feasible range of strokes for linear compressor application. Full article

Underwater radiated noise from anthropogenic structures must be reduced to protect the marine environment. Active vibration isolation that can reduce noise generated from vibration sources by providing counteracting forces can solve this issue. This paper presents a 120 N class electromagnetic inertial mass linear actuator for an active vibration control system in a large ship. The proposed actuator is operated based on the Lorentz force, also known as electromagnetic force. To achieve a high thrust force to weight ratio, a permanent magnet with outer radial magnetization is used. In order to design and analyze the proposed model, a simple magnetic equivalent circuit analysis was first conducted to achieve an appropriate force, and its value was compared and verified with the magnetostatic finite element method. The dynamic characteristics of the actuator were then evaluated, and the performance was analyzed at various operating frequency points. The bobbin housing supporting the coil causes an eddy current loss due to materials with electrical conductivity. As a result, the damping force is generated by the reduction in magnetic flux, and the control force tends to decrease. Full article

The analysis of complex systems tends to be approached through a separation and a simplification of the main macro phenomena and, thus, addressed through dedicated techniques, tools, and algorithms. A smart and interesting possibility, instead, is represented by the so-called model-based design analysis, which allows one to interface phenomena coming from interactions of different physical natures. This paper aims to propose a multi-physics Matlab/Simulink®-based architecture that allows one to integrate general and strongly non-linear coupling phenomena, taking efforts from two novel implemented bi-directional co-simulation routines based on Spice® and ESRF Radia® engines. Emphasis is dedicated to the discussion and description of the co-simulation algorithms and processes characteristic of these routines, which allow the analog electronic and the magneto dynamic domain’s integration under a single simulation environment. To highlight the reliability of the multi-domain architecture and to validate the reported co-simulation results, a comparison with the experimental measures obtained on an innovative MEMS electromagnetic actuator are proposed. Hydrogels made of cross-linked polyacrlyamides (cPAM) and conducting materials made of polyanilines (PANIs) are both the most widely used materials in each category. This is due to their accessible monomers, easy synthesis and excellent properties. Therefore, the combination of these materials produces composites which show enhanced properties and also synergy between the cPAM properties (e.g., elasticity) and those of PANIs (e.g., conductivity). The most common way to produce the composites is to form the gel by radical polymerization (usually by redox initiators) then incorporate the PANIs into the network by oxidative polymerization of anilines. It is often claimed that the product is a semi-interpenetrated network (s-IPN) made of linear PANIs penetrating the cPAM network. However, there is evidence that the nanopores of the hydrogel become filled with PANIs nanoparticles, producing a composite. On the other hand, swelling the cPAM in true solutions of PANIs macromolecules renders s-IPN with different properties. Technological applications of the composites have been developed, such as photothermal (PTA)/electromechanical actuators, supercapacitors, movement/pressure sensors, etc. PTA devices rely on the absorption of electromagnetic radiation (light, microwaves, radiofrequency) by PANIs, which heats up the composite, triggering the phase transition of a thermosensitive cPAM. Therefore, the synergy of properties of both polymers is beneficial. Full article

The present work focuses on the actuation system of a morphing winglet conceived to adaptively alter the load distribution on the wing, to reduce its stress level and enhance the climb performance. The winglet is equipped with two flaps, independently controlled by dedicated kinematic chains, in turn moved by linear electro-magnetic actuators. An interior finger-like architecture, relevant part of the actuation system, makes particularly smooth the deflections. Starting from a survey on similar applications and on the basis of the requirements at aircraft level, the specifications of the actuation system were defined. A preliminary outline of the system was thus addressed, identifying the main components, their role and their working mode. Then, the advanced design was finalized. To this scope and considering the large displacements that characterize this kind of application, a non-linear finite element approach was implemented. Both the deflection capability with and without loads and the stress level of the system were investigated. A critical overview was finally organized, comparing the achieved results with the expectations. Full article

In order to enhance compressor efficiency and meet the requirements of energy conservation and environmental protection, this study designed a direct-drive compressor with an electromagnetic linear actuator. Starting with the structural design and performance analysis of the linear compressor, the working process of the moving-coil linear compressor was analyzed. The basic performance of the designed moving-coil linear motor was simulated and analyzed using the Maxwell software, while the overall performance of the linear compressor was simulated and analyzed using the Simulink software to verify the feasibility of controlling a linear compressor via the direct drive of a linear motor. In order to meet the increasing demand for high-performance and high-efficiency vehicles, this paper proposes a novel electromagnetic linear energy-reclaiming suspension technology based on the McPherson independent suspension, and analyzes its core component—ELA-ERD (Electromagnetic Linear Actuation Energy-Reclaiming Device). ELA-ERD, taking a shock absorber piston rod as the inner yoke, has a compact structure and reasonable layout by integrating the structural features of the suspension. In this paper, the design process of ELA-ERD is elaborated in detail. Aiming at the problem of over-saturation of the inner yoke magnetic density, this paper proposes a method to optimize the magnetic circuit by increasing the size of the inner yoke within the effective working area of the moving coil, thus effectively improving the electromagnetic characteristics of ELA-ERD. Moreover, the effect and potential of energy reclaiming on ELA-ERD were studied by using finite element software. The study on the energy-reclaiming law of ELA-ERD was carried out from the perspective of the changes in vibration frequency and amplitude. In addition, the internal relationship between the energy-reclaiming voltage and the vibration velocity was revealed in this work, and the energy-reclaiming voltage coefficient Ke was defined. Through calculation of a large amount of model data, the Ke value applicable to the designed ELA-ERD in this paper was approximately set to 4.5. This study lays an important theoretical foundation for the follow-up studies. Full article
