This study explores the transformative potential of blockchain technology in overhauling conventional housing rental systems. It specifically addresses persistent issues, such as information asymmetry, fraudulent listings, weak Rental Agreements, and data breaches. A comprehensive review of ten academic publications highlights the architectural frameworks, underlying technologies, and myriad benefits of decentralized rental platforms. The intrinsic characteristics of blockchain—immutability, transparency, and decentralization—are pivotal in enhancing the credibility of rental information and proactively preventing fraudulent activities. Smart contracts emerge as a key innovation, enabling the automated execution of Rental Agreements, thereby significantly boosting efficiency and minimizing reliance on intermediaries. Furthermore, Decentralized Identity (DID) solutions offer a robust mechanism for securely managing identities, effectively mitigating risks associated with data leakage, and fostering a more trustworthy environment. The suitability of platforms such as Hyperledger Fabric for developing such sophisticated rental systems is also critically evaluated. Blockchain-based systems promise to dramatically increase market transparency, bolster transaction security, and enhance fraud prevention. They also offer streamlined processes for dispute resolution. Despite these significant advantages, the widespread adoption of blockchain in the rental sector faces several challenges. These include inherent technological complexity, adoption barriers, the need for extensive legal and regulatory adaptation, and critical privacy concerns (e.g., ensuring compliance with GDPR). Furthermore, blockchain scalability limitations and the intricate balance between data immutability and the necessity for occasional data corrections present considerable hurdles. Future research should focus on developing user-friendly DID solutions, enhancing blockchain performance and cost-efficiency, strengthening smart contract security, optimizing the overall user experience, and exploring seamless integration with emerging technologies. While current challenges are undeniable, blockchain technology offers a powerful suite of tools for fundamentally improving the rental market’s efficiency, transparency, and security, exhibiting significant potential to reshape the entire rental ecosystem. Incineration at sea is a significant source of marine pollution, threatening biodiversity and public health. Although Peru ratified the 1996 London Protocol in 2018, key deficiencies persist in its domestic legal framework, particularly the absence of clear and internationally aligned definitions for “incineration” and “incinerator.” These gaps hinder effective enforcement by the National Maritime Authority (NMA-DICAPI) and limit regulatory compliance with international obligations. This study analyzes Peru’s current legislation in light of the London Protocol and includes a comparative overview of regional regulatory approaches in Latin America. Based on this analysis, the study identifies regulatory inconsistencies that compromise environmental protection and proposes three key legal reforms: (1) refining the definition of “incineration” to reflect international standards; (2) formally incorporating a definition for “incinerator”; and (3) establishing specific administrative and economic sanctions for related infractions. Through comparative analysis with Mexico and Colombia’s approaches, we propose targeted amendments including refined definitions aligned with IMO standards and explicit administrative/economic sanctions. Implementing these recommendations would enhance Peru’s legal clarity, enforcement capacity, and compliance with international maritime law, reinforcing its role as a responsible actor in marine environmental governance. This study explores how corporate governance reforms can enhance financial reporting quality and organizational transparency, focusing on Greece’s transition from Law 3016/2002 to Law 4706/2020. The legislative reform aimed to modernize governance structures, align national practices with international standards, and strengthen investor protection in a post-crisis economic environment. Moving beyond a simple legal comparison, the study examines how Law 3016/2002’s formal compliance model contrasts with Law 4706/2020’s more substantive accountability framework. We hypothesize that Law 4706/2020 introduces substantively stronger governance mechanisms than its predecessor, thereby improving transparency and investor protection, while compliance with the new law imposes materially greater administrative and financial burdens, especially on small- and mid-cap firms. Methodologically, the research employs a narrative literature review and a structured comparative legal analysis to assess the administrative and financial implications of the new law for publicly listed companies, focusing on board composition and diversity, internal controls, suitability policies, and disclosure requirements. Drawing on prior comparative evidence, we posit that Law 4706/2020 will foster governance and disclosure improvements, enhanced oversight, and clearer board roles. However, these measures also impose compliance burdens. Due to the heterogeneity of listed companies and the lack of firm-level data following Law 4706/2020’s implementation, the findings are neither fully generalizable nor quantifiable; future quantitative research using event studies or panel data is required to validate the hypotheses. We conclude that Greece’s new framework is a critical step toward sustainable corporate governance and more transparent financial reporting, offering regulators, practitioners, and scholars examining legal reform’s impact on governance effectiveness and financial reporting integrity. Video surveillance systems have become pervasive in contemporary society, prompting growing concerns about their psychological and behavioral effects on individuals. This study investigates how perceived surveillance influences self-censorship and behavioral regulation in monitored environments, drawing on the conceptual framework of panoptic self-regulation and surveillance-induced anxiety. A structured questionnaire was administered to 358 university students, and data were analyzed using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis to validate latent constructs, followed by ordinal logistic regression and mediation analysis to test key hypotheses. The results indicate that individuals who perceive higher psychological pressure due to surveillance are more likely to modify their behavior, exhibiting heightened self-awareness and restraint. Additionally, belief in the active monitoring of surveillance footage significantly amplifies behavioral vigilance. The perception of the technological omnipresence of surveillance further intensifies psychological discomfort, which mediates behavioral change. These findings conceptualize video surveillance as a socio-technical system that exerts behavioral influence through internalized psychological mechanisms. The study highlights the importance of considering the unintended consequences of surveillance technologies on autonomy and freedom, and it suggests that regulatory frameworks should account not only for legal compliance but also for the psychological impact of surveillance. The results provide empirical support for viewing surveillance systems as dynamic regulators of human behavior. Full article

Background/Objectives: Artificial intelligence (AI) is beginning to be applied in wound ballistics, showing preliminary potential to improve the accuracy and objectivity of forensic analyses. This review explores the current state of AI applications in forensic firearm wound analysis, emphasizing its potential to address challenges such as subjective interpretations and data heterogeneity. Methods: A systematic review adhering to PRISMA guidelines was conducted using databases such as Scopus and Web of Science. Keywords focused on AI and GSW classification identified 502 studies, narrowed down to 4 relevant articles after rigorous screening based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: These studies examined the role of deep learning (DL) models in classifying GSWs by type, shooting distance, and entry or exit characteristics. The key findings demonstrated that DL models like TinyResNet, ResNet152, and ConvNext Tiny achieved accuracy ranging from 87.99% to 98%. Models were effective in tasks such as classifying GSWs and estimating shooting distances. However, most studies were exploratory in nature, with small sample sizes and, in some cases, reliance on animal models, which limits generalizability to real-world forensic scenarios. Conclusions: Comparisons with other forensic AI applications revealed that large, diverse datasets significantly enhance model performance. Transparent and interpretable AI systems utilizing techniques are essential for judicial acceptance and ethical compliance. Despite the encouraging results, the field remains in an early stage of development. Limitations highlight the need for standardized protocols, cross-institutional collaboration, and the integration of multimodal data for robust forensic AI systems. Future research should focus on overcoming current data and validation constraints, ensuring the ethical use of human forensic data, and developing AI tools that are scientifically sound and legally defensible. In the context of wastewater treatment plant optimization, this study presents a novel approach based on a virtual sensor architecture designed to estimate total nitrogen levels in effluent and assess plant performance using an operational indicator. The core of the system is an intelligent agent that integrates real-time sensor data with machine learning models to infer nitrogen dynamics and anticipate deviations from optimal operating conditions. Central to this strategy is the operational nitrogen indicator (ONI), a weighted aggregation of four sub-indicators: legal compliance (Nactual%), the nitrogen dynamic trend (Tnitr%), removal efficiency (Enitr%), and microbial balance (NP%), each of which captures a critical dimension of the nitrogen removal process. The ONI enables the early detection of stress conditions and facilitates adaptive decision-making by quantifying operational status in terms of regulatory thresholds, biological requirements, and dynamic stability. This approach contributes to a shift toward smart wastewater treatment plants, where virtual sensing, autonomous control, and throttling-aware diagnostics converge to improve process efficiency, reduce operational risk, and promote environmental compliance. This study discusses the role of organizational pro-environmental behavior in driving sustainable development. Studies of green practices highlight their capacity to achieve ecological goals while delivering economic sustainability with business strategies for sustainable businesses and advancing environmental sustainability law. It also considers how the development of artificial intelligence, resource management, big data analysis, blockchain, and the Internet of Things enables companies to maximize supply efficiency and address evolving environmental regulations and sustainable decision-making. Through digital technology, businesses can facilitate supply chain transparency, adopt circular economy practices, and produce in an equitable and environmentally friendly manner. Additionally, intelligent business management practices, such as effective decision-making and sustainability reporting, enhance compliance with authorities while ensuring long-term profitability from a legal perspective. Integrating business innovation and digital technology within legal entities enhances economic efficiency, reduces operational costs, improves environmental sustainability, reduces paper usage, and lowers the carbon footprint, creating a double-benefit model of long-term resilience. The policymakers’ role in formulating policy structures that lead to green digital innovation is also to ensure that economic development worldwide is harmonized with environmental protection and international governance. Mental health disorders, particularly depression and anxiety, have become increasingly prevalent among elite athletes, exacerbated by factors such as competitive pressure and the Coronavirus Disease 19 (COVID-19) pandemic. This study analyzes trends in the use of antidepressants, anxiolytics, and cannabinoids (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)/cannabidiol (CBD)) among Italian athletes from 2011 to the first half of 2023 (FH2023), referring to anti-doping reports published by the Italian Ministry of Health. Data from 13,079 athletes were examined, with a focus on non-prohibited medications, banned substances, and regulatory impacts, including threshold adjustments for THC since 2013 and the legalization of CBD. The results show fluctuating use of antidepressants/anxiolytics, with peaks in 2021 and the FH2023, coinciding with post-pandemic awareness. Positive THC cases rose following regulatory changes, reflecting socio-cultural trends. Gender disparities emerged, with THC use predominantly among males (e.g., nine males vs. one female in 2013), though female athletes were underrepresented in testing. This study highlights the need for personalized, evidence-based strategies that balance therapeutic efficacy and anti-doping compliance. Clinicians should carefully consider prescribing selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and benzodiazepines to address depression and anxiety and should monitor the risks of CBD contamination. Future research should adopt longitudinal, gender-sensitive approaches to refining guidelines and combating stigma in professional sports. Full article

Legal requirements for minimum distances between vehicles are often not met for short periods of time, especially when changing lanes on multi-lane roads. These situations are typically non-hazardous, as human drivers anticipate surrounding traffic, allowing for shorter headways and improved traffic flow. Automated vehicles (AVs), however, are typically designed to maintain strict headway limits, potentially reducing traffic efficiency. Therefore, legal questions arise as to whether mandatory gap and headway limits for AVs may be violated during periods of non-compliance. While traffic flow simulation is a common method for analyzing AV impacts, previous studies have typically modeled AV behavior using driver models originally designed to replicate human driving. These models are not well suited for representing clearly defined, structured non-compliant maneuvers, as they cannot simulate intentional, rule-deviating strategies. This paper addresses this gap by introducing a concept for AV non-compliant behavior and implementing it as a module within a pre-existing AV driver model. Simulations were conducted on a three-lane highway with an on-ramp under varying traffic volumes and AV penetration rates. The results showed that, with an AV-penetration rate of more than 25%, road capacity at highway entrances could be increased and travel times reduced by over 20%, provided that AVs were allowed to merge with a legal gap of 0.9 s and a minimum non-compliant gap of 0.6 s lasting up to 3 s. This suggests that performance gains are achievable under adjusted legal requirements. In addition, the proposed framework can serve as a foundation for further development of AV driver models aiming at improving traffic efficiency while maintaining regulatory compliance. Full article

As data becomes a core driver of modern business innovation, mobile applications increasingly collect and process users’ personal information, posing significant challenges to the effectiveness of informed consent and the legitimacy of user authorization. Existing research on privacy informed consent mechanisms has predominantly focused on privacy policy texts and normative legal discussions, often overlooking a critical touchpoint—the launch-time privacy pop-up window. Moreover, empirical investigations from the user’s perspective remain limited. To address these issues, this study employs a two-stage approach combining compliance audit and grounded theory. The preliminary audit of 21 mobile apps assesses the compliance of privacy pop-ups, and the formal study uses thematic analysis of interviews with 19 participants to construct a dual-path explanatory framework. Key findings reveal that: (1) while the reviewed apps partially safeguarded users’ right to be informed, compliance deficiencies still persist; (2) trust and privacy fatigue emerge as dual motivations driving user consent. Trust plays a critical role in amplifying the impact of positive messages within privacy pop-ups by enhancing the consistency among users’ cognition, affect, and behavior, thereby reducing resistance to privacy consent and improving the effectiveness of the current informed consent framework. Conversely, privacy fatigue increases the inconsistency among these factors, undermining consent effectiveness and exacerbating the challenges associated with informed consent. This study offers a user-centered framework to explain the dynamics of informed consent in mobile privacy pop-ups and provides actionable insights for regulators, developers, and privacy advocates seeking to enhance transparency and user autonomy. This review investigates the influence of European Union regulations on the adoption of artificial intelligence in smart city solutions, with a structured emphasis on regulatory barriers, technological challenges, and societal benefits. It offers a comprehensive analysis of the legal frameworks in effect by 2025, including the Artificial Intelligence Act, General Data Protection Regulation, Data Act, and sector-specific directives governing mobility, energy, and surveillance. This study critically assesses how these regulations affect the deployment of AI systems across urban domains such as traffic optimization, public safety, waste management, and energy efficiency. A comparative analysis of regulatory environments in the United States and China reveals differing governance models and their implications for innovation, safety, citizen trust, and international competitiveness. The review concludes that although the European Union’s focus on ethics and accountability establishes a solid basis for trustworthy artificial intelligence, the complexity and associated compliance costs create substantial barriers to adoption. It offers recommendations for policymakers, municipal authorities, and technology developers to align regulatory compliance with effective innovation in the context of urban digital transformation. This study addresses the urgent challenge of safeguarding sensitive health data in today’s digital age by proposing a novel, integrated data protection framework that synthesises six critical pillars—technology, policy, cybersecurity, legal frameworks, governance, and risk assessment—into a unified socio-technical model. Unlike existing piecemeal approaches, this framework is designed to bridge the gap between regulatory requirements and practical implementation through measurable, engineering-based solutions. Healthcare organisations face persistent difficulties in aligning innovation with secure and compliant practices due to fragmented governance and reactive cybersecurity measures. This paper aims to empirically validate the effectiveness of the proposed framework by quantitatively analysing causal relationships between its components (such as between governance and compliance) using advanced statistical methods, including exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM). A survey of healthcare professionals across multiple countries revealed significant gaps between regulatory expectations and operational realities, underscoring the need for harmonised strategies. The results demonstrate strong causal linkages between governance, cybersecurity practices, and compliance, validating the framework’s robustness. The intersection of digitalization and innovation has emerged as the most vital strategy to spur economic development and shape consumer choice. The study examines sustainable development, digital economic governance, and sustainable consumption, emphasizing the role of consumer awareness, tariff policy, and managerial practice in aligning business strategy with sustainable goals. Amidst global environmental challenges, a suitable tariff policy is of utmost significance to propel the digital economy and encourage sustainable development. This paper investigates how emerging tariff policies can advance trade competitiveness and environmental impacts and draws on a literature review and data collection for the period between 2000 and 2025. The article examines the disruptive function of digital technologies, AI, and big data in driving sustainable business practices and digitalization. It also discusses how such technologies can simplify tariff implementation, compliance, and stakeholder trust through behavioral insights drawn from secondary data analysis on a cross-country basis and official reports. The study identifies best practices in the coordination of tariff policy with international governance institutions. Empirical observation shows that innovative tariff approaches in digital economic governance can support long-term growth, increase international coordination, and guide global governance efforts in environmental sustainability and SDGs. The implications of the findings are relevant to policymakers, business leaders, and legal experts working on fast-paced global changes. Full article

Engineering contract management is a critical component of project management systems, serving as a key mechanism for ensuring successful project implementation. This study systematically analyzes 349 s-instance judicial cases related to construction engineering contract disputes in the Yangtze River Delta Economic Zone from 2017 to 2021, based on data obtained from the China Judgments Online database. The research identifies contractual risk characteristics across dimensions such as regional distribution, dispute terminology, legal citation patterns, and appellate role transitions. The key findings include the following: (1) Primary risks involve payment disputes, quality assurance failures, contractual validity issues, and schedule compliance challenges. (2) Litigation patterns reveal complex interdependencies between contracting parties and stakeholders, posing significant risk management challenges. (3) High second-instance modification rates stem from procedural irregularities, new evidence, improper legal application, and factual errors in initial trials. The study proposes stratified risk mitigation strategies, including governmental regulatory improvements and enterprise-level management optimizations. These findings offer valuable insights into advancing risk governance in construction contract administration, particularly through an enhanced understanding of dispute complexity and systemic vulnerabilities. The coronavirus pandemic has spread globally, affecting over 700 million people and resulting in over 7 million deaths. In response, global pharmaceutical companies and disease control centers have urgently sought effective treatments and vaccines. However, the rise of counterfeit drugs has become a significant concern amid this urgency. To standardize the legal provision and usage of genetic resources, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) introduced the Nagoya Protocol. Despite advancements in drug research, the production process remains tedious, complex and vulnerable to fraud. FairChain addresses this pressing challenge by creating a transparent ecosystem that builds trust among all stakeholders throughout the Drug Development Life Cycle (DDLC) by using decentralized, immutable, and transparent blockchain technology. This makes FairChain the first digital health tool to implement the principles of the UNDP’s Nagoya Protocol among all stakeholders throughout all DDLC stages, starting with sample collection, to discovery and development, to preclinical research, to clinical development, to regulator review, and ending with post-market monitoring. Therefore, FairChain allows pharmaceutical companies to document the entire drug production process, landowners to monitor bio-samples from their land, doctors to share clinical research, and regulatory agencies such as the Food and Drug Authority to oversee samples and authorize production. FairChain should enhance transparency, foster trust and efficiency, and ensure a fair and traceable DDLC. To date, no blockchain-based framework has addressed the integration of traceability, auditability, and Nagoya Protocol compliance within a unified system architecture. This paper introduces FairChain, a system that formalizes these requirements in a modular, policy-aligned, and verifiable digital trust infrastructure. Full article
