Environmental protection is one of the key challenges facing mankind today. Finding out what young people, referred to as Generation Z, think about this issue is extremely important, as they will be the first to experience the negative effects of environmental degradation. Research has shown that Generation Z has the greatest hope for solutions from the technological sphere. Thus, the economic and political spheres should support the development of technology in this area. The social sphere is rated lowest, which may reflect young people’s personal withdrawal and the delegation of responsibility for the environment’s future to engineers, entrepreneurs, and politicians. It is equally important to learn what constitutes an environmental imperative for Generation Z. It is based on new energy sources, energy producers, and the state’s pursuit of a policy of international cooperation in this area, supported by national legislative activity toward entrepreneurs and citizens. Research has demonstrated the need to raise awareness among young people, with a focus on individuals treated as subjects in their interaction with modern technology. Full article

To address the new challenges of sustainable international trade under the digital transformation, this study aims to explore the relevance and mechanism of the relationship between technological specialization and the sustainable development of digital service trade (focusing on economic sustainability). Based on panel data from 50 economies from 2006 to 2022, the core hypothesis of “whether technological specialization can enhance the sustainable competitiveness of digital service trade by optimizing the global value chain and industrial structure” is verified. An improved index of technological specialization is proposed, breaking through the limitations of traditional indicators, and for the first time introducing the dimension of “knowledge breadth,” reinterpreting the “Leontief Paradox” in the context of digital trade. The study finds that technological specialization significantly enhances the export of digital services, and the effect is more significant in countries with strict intellectual property protection, latecomers in technology, and the European region. Mechanically, this is achieved through improving the position in the global value chain and upgrading the industrial structure. This provides a theoretical breakthrough to solve the technology–trade paradox in the digital age and offers a path for latecomer economies to reconstruct competitive advantages and achieve sustainable development through technological specialization. This paper presents a procedural method aimed at protecting maritime critical infrastructure, which is essential for the functioning of developed nations. A novel approach, developed by the authors, is introduced—focusing on the behavioral analysis of vessels to enable early identification of suspicious maritime activity and to prevent damage or destruction to key infrastructure elements. An integrated system is proposed, combining real-time electronic surveillance with continuous access to and analysis of data from both national and international databases. Drawing inspiration from medical sciences, a screening-based methodology has been developed. Data on vessels collected from various sources are processed according to the criteria adopted by the authors, using a multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) approach. MCDA is a decision-support method that considers multiple criteria simultaneously. It allows for the comparison and evaluation of different options, even when they are difficult to compare directly. This characteristic is used to select high-risk vessels for further monitoring. An initial classification of a vessel as suspicious does not constitute proof of criminal activity but rather serves as a trigger for further coordinated actions. Data on vessels is collected from the AIS (automatic identification system) and platforms that store vessel history. The AIS is a powerful tool that processes parameters such as a ship’s speed and course. This article presents sample results from surveillance and pre-selection analyses using the AIS, followed by a multi-criteria assessment of the behavior of vessels identified through this process. The results are presented both graphically and numerically. The authors conducted several scenarios, analyzing different groups of vessels. Based on this analysis, recommendations were developed for the interpretation of the findings. Full article

Quercetin, a natural polyphenolic flavonoid with antioxidant and anti-allergic properties, is extensively found in foods and holds significant importance for human health. In this study, a simple switch-off fluorescent sensor based on copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) was proposed for the sensitive determination of quercetin. Glutathione acted as the reducing and protective agent in the synthesized process of Cu NCs via a facile, green one-pot method. As anticipated, the glutathione-capped Cu NCs (GSH-Cu NCs) exhibited favorable water solubility and ultrasmall size. The fluorescence property of GSH-Cu NCs was further enhanced with Al3+ ion through the aggregation-induced emission effect. When quercetin was present in the sample solution, the system exhibited effective fluorescence quenching, which was attributed to the internal filter effect. The GSH-Cu NCs/Al3+-based fluorescent sensor showed a good linear relationship to quercetin in the concentration range from 0.1 to 60 μM. A detection limit of 24 nM was obtained. Moreover, the constructed sensor was employed for the successful determination of quercetin in tea samples. Full article

When faults occur in transmission lines of grid-forming PV systems, the LVRT control and virtual impedance function cause the fault characteristics of grid-forming inverters to differ significantly from those of synchronous generators, which deteriorates the performance of existing protection schemes. To address this issue, this paper analyzes the fault characteristics of PV transmission lines under grid-forming control objectives and the adaptability of traditional current differential protection. Subsequently, a novel pilot protection based on the Jensen–Shannon distance is proposed for transmission line of grid-forming PV systems. Initially, the post-fault current samples are modeled as discrete probability distributions. The Jensen–Shannon distance algorithm quantifies the similarity between the distributions on both line ends. Based on the calculated distance results, internal and external faults are distinguished, optimizing the performance of traditional waveform-similarity-based pilot protection. Simulation results verify that the proposed protection reliably identifies internal and external faults on the protected line. It demonstrates satisfactory performance across different fault resistances and fault types, and exhibits strong noise immunity and synchronization error tolerance. In addition, the proposed pilot protection is compared with the existing waveform-similarity-based protection schemes. Full article

Aiming at the lightweight design of a bridge-shed integration structure, this paper presents a three-layered absorbing system in which a part of the sand cushion is replaced by expanded polystyrene (EPS) geofoam and the reinforced concrete (RC) protective slab is arranged above the sand cushion to enhance the composite system’s safety. A three-dimensional Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics–Finite Element Method (SPH-FEM) coupled numerical model is developed in LS-DYNA (Livermore Software Technology Corporation, Livermore, CA, USA, version R13.1.1), with its validity rigorously verified. The dynamic response of rockfall impacts on the shed slab with composite cushions of various thicknesses is analyzed by varying the thickness of sand and EPS materials. To optimize the cushion design, a specific energy dissipation ratio (SEDR), defined as the energy dissipation rate per unit mass (η/M), is introduced as a key performance metric. Furthermore, the complicated interactional mechanism between the rockfall and the optimum-thickness composite system is rationally interpreted, and the energy dissipation mechanism of the composite cushion is revealed. Using logistic regression, the ultimate stress state of the reactive powder concrete (RPC) slab is methodically analyzed, accounting for the speed and mass of the rockfall. The results are indicative of the fact that the composite cushion not only has less dead weight but also exhibits superior impact resistance compared to the 90 cm sand cushions; the impact resistance performance index SEDR of the three-layered absorbing system reaches 2.5, showing a remarkable 55% enhancement compared to the sand cushion (SEDR = 1.61). Additionally, both the sand cushion and the RC protective slab effectively dissipate most of the impact energy, while the EPS material experiences relatively little internal energy build-up in comparison. This feature overcomes the traditional vulnerability of EPS subjected to impact loads. One of the highlights of the present investigation is the development of an identification model specifically designed to accurately assess the stress state of RPC slabs under various rockfall impact conditions. Background/Objectives: Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a microangiopathic hemolytic anemia exhibiting 90% mortality without prompt treatment. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE)-treated TTP in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients with mortality, demographics, and clinical comorbidities. We queried the United States Renal Data System for ESRD patients starting dialysis between 1 January 2005 and 31 December 2018, using International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-9 and ICD-10 codes for thrombotic microangiopathy, with a TPE procedure code entered within 7 days. Methods: Cox proportional hazards models were used to assess mortality, adjusting for demographic and clinical factors. Results: Among 1,155,136 patients, increased age [adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 0.96, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.94–0.96]; black race (OR = 0.67, CI: 0.51–0.89); and Hispanic ethnicity (OR = 0.43, CI: 0.28–0.66) were associated with a lower risk of TPE-treated TTP diagnosis, whereas female sex (OR = 1.59, CI: 1.25–2.02) and tobacco use (OR = 2.08, CI: 1.58–2.75) had a higher risk. A claim for TPE-treated TTP carried a lower risk of death (adjusted hazard ratio = 0.024, CI: 0.021–0.028). Female sex, black race, Hispanic ethnicity, and hypothyroidism were also associated with decreased all-cause mortality. Conclusions: These findings suggest that ESRD patients with TPE-treated TTP are significantly protected from mortality compared with ESRD patients without this diagnosis. Full article

With the rapid pace of urbanization, cities are increasingly facing severe challenges related to environmental pollution, ecological degradation, and climate change. Extreme climate events—such as heatwaves, droughts, heavy rainfall, and wildfires—have intensified public concern about sustainability, environmental protection, and low-carbon development. Ensuring environmental preservation while maintaining residents’ quality of life has become a central focus of urban governance. In this context, evaluating green indicators and predicting urban greenness is both necessary and urgent. This study incorporates international frameworks such as the EU Green City Index, the European Green Capital Award, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to assess urban sustainability. The Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) algorithm is employed to predict the green level of cities and to develop multiple optimized models. Comparative analysis with traditional models demonstrates that XGBoost achieves superior performance, with an accuracy of 0.84 and an F1-score of 0.81. Case study findings identify “Greenhouse Gas Emissions per Person” and “Per Capita Emissions from Transport” as the most critical indicators. These results provide practical guidance for policymakers, suggesting that targeted regulations based on these key factors can effectively support emission reduction and urban sustainability goals. Incineration at sea is a significant source of marine pollution, threatening biodiversity and public health. Although Peru ratified the 1996 London Protocol in 2018, key deficiencies persist in its domestic legal framework, particularly the absence of clear and internationally aligned definitions for “incineration” and “incinerator.” These gaps hinder effective enforcement by the National Maritime Authority (NMA-DICAPI) and limit regulatory compliance with international obligations. This study analyzes Peru’s current legislation in light of the London Protocol and includes a comparative overview of regional regulatory approaches in Latin America. Based on this analysis, the study identifies regulatory inconsistencies that compromise environmental protection and proposes three key legal reforms: (1) refining the definition of “incineration” to reflect international standards; (2) formally incorporating a definition for “incinerator”; and (3) establishing specific administrative and economic sanctions for related infractions. Through comparative analysis with Mexico and Colombia’s approaches, we propose targeted amendments including refined definitions aligned with IMO standards and explicit administrative/economic sanctions. Implementing these recommendations would enhance Peru’s legal clarity, enforcement capacity, and compliance with international maritime law, reinforcing its role as a responsible actor in marine environmental governance. The ongoing decade of UN restoration matches with the European goal of bringing nature back into our lives, including in urban systems, and Nature Restoration Regulation. Within such a framework, this work is aimed at highlighting the ecological rationale and strategic value of an NRRP measure devoted to forest restoration in Italian Metropolitan Cities, and at assessing respective preliminary results. Therefore, the measure’s overarching goal (not to create urban parks or gardens, but activate forest recovery), geographic extent and scope (over 4000 ha and more than 4 million planted trees and shrubs across the country), plantation model (mandatory use of native species consistent with local potential vegetation, density of 1000 seedlings per ha, use of at least four tree and four shrub species in each project, with a minimum proportion of 70% for trees, certified provenance for reproductive material), and compulsory management activities (maintenance and replacement of any dead plants for at least five years), are herein shown and explained under an ecological perspective. Current implementation outcomes were thus assessed in terms of coherence and expected biodiversity benefits, especially with respect to ecological and biogeographic consistency of planted forests, representativity in relation to national and European plant diversity, biogeographic interest and conservation concern of adopted plants, and potential contribution to the EU Habitats Directive. Compliance with international strategic goals and normative rules, along with recognizable advantages of the measure and limitations to be solved, are finally discussed. In conclusion, the forestation model proposed for the Italian Metropolitan Cities proved to be fully applicable in its ecological rationale, with expected benefits in terms of biodiversity support plainly met, and even exceeded, at the current stage of implementation, especially in terms of the contribution to protected habitats. These promising preliminary results allow the model to be recognized at the international level as a good practice that may help achieve protection targets and sustainable development goals within and beyond urban systems. The administration of isolated mitochondria is a promising strategy for protecting cells from oxidative damage. This study aimed to identify mitochondrial characteristics that contribute to stronger protective effects. We compared two types of mitochondria isolated from C6 cells with similar ATP-producing capacity but differing in outer membrane integrity. To evaluate their stability in extracellular conditions, we examined their behavior in serum. Both types underwent mitochondrial permeability transition to a similar extent; however, under intracellular-like conditions after serum incubation, mitochondria with intact membranes retained more polarized mitochondria. Notably, mitochondria with intact outer membranes were internalized more efficiently than those with damaged membranes. In H9c2 cells, both types of mitochondria similarly increased intracellular ATP levels 1 h after administration under all tested conditions. When co-administered with H2O2, both suppressed oxidative damage to a comparable degree, as indicated by similar H2O2-scavenging activity in solution, comparable intracellular ROS levels, and equivalent preservation of electron transport chain activity. However, at higher H2O2 concentrations, cells treated with mitochondria possessing intact outer membranes exhibited greater survival 24 h after co-administration. Furthermore, when mitochondria were added after H2O2-induced damage and their removal, intact mitochondria conferred superior cell survival compared to damaged ones. These findings suggest that while both mitochondrial types exert comparable antioxidant effects, outer membrane integrity prior to administration plays a critical role in enhancing cell survival under conditions of oxidative stress. Background/Objectives: Despite legal frameworks acknowledging the need to protect the rights of female prisoners, penitentiary systems often neglect gender-specific needs, particularly for foreign women. Among them, Muslim women face distinct challenges linked to cultural and religious practices, which are frequently unmet in prison contexts. This review aims to explore the academic literature on the experiences of Muslim women in detention. Methods: A systematic review was conducted using three major bibliographic databases—Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science—covering the period from 2010 to 2024. Inclusion criteria focused on peer-reviewed studies examining the condition of Muslim women in prison. Of the initial pool, only four articles met the criteria and were included in the final analysis. Results: The review reveals a marked scarcity of research on Muslim women in prison at both national and international levels. This gap may be due to their limited representation or cultural factors that hinder open discourse. The selected studies highlight key issues, including restricted access to services, limited ability to practice religion, and language and cultural barriers. These challenges contribute to increased psychological vulnerability, which is often underestimated in prison settings. Conclusions: There is an urgent need for targeted research and culturally competent training for prison staff to adequately support Muslim women in detention. Greater academic and institutional attention is essential to develop inclusive policies that consider the intersection of gender, religion, and migration, particularly in the post-release reintegration process. Electroless nickel deposition (ELD) is an autocatalytic technique extensively used to impart conductive, protective, and mechanical functionalities to inherently non-conductive synthetic substrates. This review systematically explores the fundamental mechanisms of electroless nickel deposition, emphasising recent advancements in surface activation methods, solvent systems, and microstructural control. Critical analysis reveals that bio-inspired activation methods, such as polydopamine (PDA) and tannic acid (TA), significantly enhance coating adhesion and durability compared to traditional chemical etching and plasma treatments. Additionally, solvent engineering, particularly using polar aprotic solvents like dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and ethanol-based systems, emerges as a key strategy for achieving uniform, dense, and flexible coatings, overcoming limitations associated with traditional aqueous baths. The review also highlights that microstructural tailoring, specifically the development of amorphous-nanocrystalline hybrid nickel coatings, effectively balances mechanical robustness (hardness exceeding 800 HV), flexibility, and corrosion resistance, making these coatings particularly suitable for wearable electronic textiles and smart materials. Furthermore, commercial examples demonstrate the real-world applicability and market readiness of nickel-coated synthetic fibres. Despite significant progress, persistent challenges remain, including reliable long-term adhesion, internal stress management, and environmental sustainability. Future research should prioritise environmentally benign plating baths, standardised surface activation protocols, and scalable deposition processes to fully realise the industrial potential of electroless nickel coatings. Assessment of Heavy Metal Contamination and Human Health Risk in Parapenaeus longirostris from Coastal Tunisian Aquatic Ecosystems

Seafood contamination by heavy metals is a growing public health concern, particularly in regions like Tunisia where seafood is a major dietary component. This study assessed concentrations of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) in the muscle tissue of the red shrimp Parapenaeus longirostris, collected in 2023 from four coastal regions: Bizerte, Monastir, Kerkennah, and Gabes. Metal analysis was conducted using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. This species was chosen due to its ecological and economic importance. The study sites were chosen based on their differing levels of industrial, urban, and agricultural influence, providing a representative overview of regional contamination patterns. Mean concentrations were 1.04 µg/g for Zn, 0.59 µg/g for Cu, 1.56 µg/g for Pb, and 0.21 µg/g for Cd (dry weight). Pb was the most prevalent metal across sites. Statistically significant variation was observed only for Cu (p = 0.0334). All metal concentrations were below international safety limits set by FAO/WHO and the European Union. Compared to similar studies, the levels reported were similar or slightly lower. Human health risk was evaluated using target hazard quotient (THQ), hazard index (HI), and cancer risk (CR) values. For adults, THQ ranged from 5.44 × 10−6 to 8.43 × 10−4, while for children it ranged from 2.40 × 10−5 to 3.72 × 10−3. HI values were also well below 1, indicating negligible non-carcinogenic risk. CR values for Cd and Pb in both adults and children fell within the acceptable risk range (10−6 to <10−4), suggesting no significant carcinogenic concern. This study provides the first field-based dataset on metal contamination in P. longirostris from Tunisia, contributing valuable insights for seafood safety monitoring and public health protection. This study explores how corporate governance reforms can enhance financial reporting quality and organizational transparency, focusing on Greece’s transition from Law 3016/2002 to Law 4706/2020. The legislative reform aimed to modernize governance structures, align national practices with international standards, and strengthen investor protection in a post-crisis economic environment. Moving beyond a simple legal comparison, the study examines how Law 3016/2002’s formal compliance model contrasts with Law 4706/2020’s more substantive accountability framework. We hypothesize that Law 4706/2020 introduces substantively stronger governance mechanisms than its predecessor, thereby improving transparency and investor protection, while compliance with the new law imposes materially greater administrative and financial burdens, especially on small- and mid-cap firms. Methodologically, the research employs a narrative literature review and a structured comparative legal analysis to assess the administrative and financial implications of the new law for publicly listed companies, focusing on board composition and diversity, internal controls, suitability policies, and disclosure requirements. Drawing on prior comparative evidence, we posit that Law 4706/2020 will foster governance and disclosure improvements, enhanced oversight, and clearer board roles. However, these measures also impose compliance burdens. Due to the heterogeneity of listed companies and the lack of firm-level data following Law 4706/2020’s implementation, the findings are neither fully generalizable nor quantifiable; future quantitative research using event studies or panel data is required to validate the hypotheses. We conclude that Greece’s new framework is a critical step toward sustainable corporate governance and more transparent financial reporting, offering regulators, practitioners, and scholars examining legal reform’s impact on governance effectiveness and financial reporting integrity.
