Patient-matched implants (PMIs) enable precise anatomical reconstruction but often introduce unforeseen intraoperative challenges that can provoke stress, reduce frustration tolerance, and influence surgical decision-making. Despite the growing clinical use of PMIs, the behavioural and psychological dimensions underpinning these challenging surgeries remain underexplored. This study examined the relationship between surgeon temperament, specifically frustration tolerance threshold, patience, and adherence to planned surgical workflows during PMI procedures. A qualitative thematic study was conducted over 22 months across two academic centres and 86 private surgical practices in South Africa. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with consultant surgeons, assistant surgeons, surgical technologists, and biomedical engineers, supplemented by direct observation and detailed field notes. Inductive content analysis, thematic coding, and descriptive quantitative trends derived from Likert-style questionnaires were used to identify behavioural patterns associated with intraoperative stress and workflow deviation. Participant reports indicated that low frustration tolerance, often expressed as impatience, was perceived to be linked to increased deviations from surgical plans, including implant modification (reported in 4.6% of the 86 practices), even when design and fit were optimal. In 2.3% of the 86 practices surveyed, surgical team members reported incidents where impatience was perceived to have compromised patient safety. Stress inoculation theory and emotional intelligence frameworks offered explanatory models for the observed behaviours. Within the limits of this exploratory qualitative study, surgeon temperament—particularly mental preparedness and frustration tolerance—emerged as a recurring theme associated with intraoperative PMI workflow adherence. Whether these factors are determinants of workflow adherence whilst using high-fidelity PMIs, or merely correlated with other unmeasured variables, remains to be tested in future quantitative research. Inoculation is serious business, but that does not mean it cannot be viewed through a perspective of humor, nor that humor cannot be part of the process of attitude resistance. This applies to both medical and communication-based inoculation, with scientists examining how humor could function as an adjuvant and facilitate resistance to persuasive attacks. Though relatively limited, considerations of humor have been part of inoculation theory from the beginning—dating back from McGuire’s seminal 1964 review to the prominent role of humor in modern gamified inoculation interventions against misinformation. In this article, we explore humor’s role in inoculation theory, review emerging research, and propose promising directions for future theory and application. Full article

Functional microbial inoculation is widely applied in soil restoration; however, its effects on aggregate-scale nutrient cycling remain unclear. Based on ecological stoichiometry theory, we conducted 1-year and 3-year pot experiments using Bacillus thuringiensis (NL-11) and Gongronella butleri (NL-15) under plant-present and plant-absent conditions, with only NL-11 applied in the 1-year experiment. Aggregate size distribution, mean weight diameter (MWD), soil nutrients, microbial biomass, and enzyme activities were evaluated across aggregate classes. The results demonstrated that microbial effects were dependent on both time and plant presence. Under 3-year plant-present conditions, NL-11 and NL-15 significantly increased macroaggregate proportions and MWD, thereby enhancing aggregate stability. Under 3-year no-plant conditions, NL-15 increased organic carbon and total nitrogen in macro- and meso-aggregates by 55–59% and elevated soil C/P and N/P ratios, whereas NL-11 primarily enhanced total nitrogen. In 1-year no-plant macroaggregates, NL-11 increased microbial biomass phosphorus and reduced microbial biomass C/P and N/P ratios. Both inoculants enhanced invertase activity under plant-absent conditions, whereas plant presence stimulated acid phosphatase activity, with NAG activity increasing only under NL-15. Overall, microbial inoculation altered nutrient availability and microbial metabolic characteristics, promoted coordinated C–N–P stoichiometry, and facilitated the recovery of aggregate-scale nutrient cycling. Theoretical calculations were performed to explore the heterogeneous nucleation mechanism of an Mg-Al alloy inoculated by a carbon-containing substance. The valence electron structure and cohesive energy of Al4C3 and Al2C2Mg crystals were calculated using the empirical electron theory of solids and molecules (EET). The binding energy of Al1-C2 bonds in Al4C3 is about 140.6 kJ/mol with a lower number of equivalent bonds. Correspondingly, the binding energy of Al2-C2 bonds is about 129.6 kJ/mol, and the number of equivalent bonds is high. The weak combination of the Al1 and C2 atomic layers might lead to the breaking of Al4C3, and then the remaining strong skeleton of the Al2-C2 structure will facilitate the formation of Al2C2Mg. Based on the calculating results, the atomic interaction mechanism to account for the heterogeneous nucleation of α-Mg by C inoculation is elaborated, which also provides insights into the essence of the overheating process and the influence of Al and Mn elements on the refinement efficiency of Al2C2Mg. Scientific disinformation has emerged as a critical challenge at the interface of science and society. This paper examines how false or misleading scientific content proliferates across both social media and traditional media and evaluates strategies to counteract its spread. We conducted a comprehensive literature review of research on scientific misinformation across disciplines and regions, with particular focus on climate change and public health as exemplars. Our findings indicate that social media algorithms and user dynamics can amplify false scientific claims, as seen in case studies of viral misinformation campaigns on vaccines and climate change. Traditional media, meanwhile, are not immune to spreading inaccuracies—journalistic practices such as sensationalism or “false balance” in reporting have at times distorted scientific facts, impacting public understanding. We review efforts to fight disinformation, including technological tools for detection, the application of inoculation theory and prebunking techniques, and collaborative approaches that bridge scientists and journalists. To empower individuals, we propose practical guidelines for critically evaluating scientific information sources and emphasize the importance of digital and scientific literacy. Finally, we discuss methods to quantify the prevalence and impact of scientific disinformation—ranging from social network analysis to surveys of public belief—and compare trends across regions and scientific domains. Our results underscore that combating scientific disinformation requires an interdisciplinary, multi-pronged approach, combining improvements in science communication, education, and policy. We conducted a scoping review of 85 open-access studies focused on climate-related misinformation and disinformation, selected through a systematic screening process based on PRISMA criteria. This approach was chosen to address the lack of comprehensive mappings that synthesize key themes and identify research gaps in this fast-growing field. The analysis classified the literature into 17 thematic clusters, highlighting key trends, gaps, and emerging challenges in the field. Our results reveal a strong dominance of studies centered on social media amplification, political denialism, and cognitive inoculation strategies, while underlining a lack of research on fact-checking mechanisms and non-Western contexts. We conclude with recommendations for strengthening the resilience of both the public and information ecosystems against the spread of false scientific claims. Full article

After the detection of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), and a zoonotic transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) caused by the pathological prion protein (PrPSc) in two goats, the investigation of goat prions became of greater interest. Therefore, a broad collection of European goat TSE isolates, including atypical scrapie, CH1641 and goat BSE as reference prion strains were biochemically characterised and subsequently inoculated into seven rodent models for further analysis (already published results of this comprehensive study are reviewed here for comparative reasons). We report here the histopathological and immunohistochemical data of this goat TSE panel, obtained after the first passage in Tgshp IX (tg-shARQ) mice, which overexpress the ovine prion protein. In addition to the clear-cut discrimination of all reference prion strains from the classical scrapie (CS) isolates, we were further able to determine three categories of CS strains. The investigation further indicates the occurrence of sub-strains that slightly resemble distant TSE strains, such as BSE or CH1641, reinforcing the theory that CS is not a single strain but a mixture of sub-strains, existing at varying extents in one isolate. This study further proved that Tgshp IX is a potent and reliable tool for the in-depth characterisation of prion strains. Full article

Across the globe, comprehensive COVID-19 vaccination programs have been rolled out. Naturally, it remains paramount for efficiency to ensure uptake. Hypothetical vaccine acceptability in South Africa was high prior to the availability of inoculation in August 2020—three-quarters stated intent to immunize nationally. However, 24 months on, less than one-third have finished their vaccination on a national average, and in the sprawling South Western Townships (Soweto), this figure remains troublingly low with as many as four in every five still hesitant. Medical anthropologists have recently portrayed how COVID-19’s jumbled mediatization produces a ‘field of suspicion’ casting serious doubt on authorities and vaccines through misinformation and counterfactual claims, which fuels ‘othering’ and fosters hesitancy. It follows that intent to immunize cannot be used to predict uptake. Here, we take this conceptual framework one step further and illustrate how South African context-specific factors imbricate to amplify uncertainty and fear due the productive nature of communicability, which transforms othering into racialization and exacerbates existing societal polarizations. We also encounter Africanized forms of conspiracy theories and find their narrational roots in colonization and racism. Finally, we discuss semblances with HIV and how the COVID-19 pandemic’s biomedicalization may inadvertently have led to vaccine resistance due to medical pluralism and cultural/spiritual practices endemic to the townships. The COVID-19 pandemic was accompanied by the rapid spread of misinformation through social media platforms. This study attempted to develop an online fake news game based on the inoculation theory, applicable to the pandemic context, and aimed at enhancing misinformation discrimination. It also tested whether perceived threat and persuasion knowledge serve as underlying mechanisms of the effects of the intervention on misinformation discrimination. In Study 1, we used online priming to examine the influence of inoculation on misinformation discrimination. In Study 2, we developed an online fake-news-game-based intervention and attempted to validate its effectiveness through a randomized controlled trial while also exploring the mediating roles of perceived threat and persuasion knowledge. In Study 1, brief inoculation information priming significantly enhanced the ability to recognize misinformation (F(2.502) = 8.321, p < 0.001, ηp2 = 0.032). In Study 2, the five-day game-based intervention significantly enhanced the ability to recognize misinformation (F(2.322) = 3.301, p = 0.038, ηp2 = 0.020). The mediation effect of persuasion knowledge was significant (β = 0.025, SE = 0.016, 95% CI = [0.034, 0.075]), while that of perceived threat was not significant. Online interventions based on the inoculation theory are effective in enhancing misinformation discrimination, and one of the underlying mechanisms of this effect lies in its promotion of persuasion knowledge. Fusarium head blight (FHB) of wheat caused by Fusarium species is a destructive disease, causing grain yield and quality losses. Developing FHB-resistant cultivars is crucial to minimize the extent of the disease. The first objective of this study was incorporation of Fhb1 from a resistant donor into five Polish wheat breeding lines with good agronomical traits and different origins. We also performed a haplotype-based GWAS to identify chromosome regions in derived wheat families associated with Fusarium head blight resistance. As a result of marker-assisted backcrossing (MABC), five wheat combinations were obtained. Fungal inoculation and disease assessment were conducted for two years, 2019 and 2020. In 2019 the average phenotypic response of type II resistance was 2.2, whereas in 2020 it was 2.1. A haploblock-based GWAS performed on 10 phenotypic traits (related to type of resistance, year of experiment and FHB index) revealed nine marker–trait associations (MTA), among which six belong to chromosome 2D, two to 3B and one to 7D. Phenotypic variation (R2) explained by the identified haplotypes in haploblocks ranged from 6% to 49%. Additionally, an association weight matrix (AWM) was created, giving the partial correlation–information theory (PCIT) pipeline of 171 edges and 19 nodes. The resultant data and high level of explained phenotypic variance of MTA create the opportunity for data utilization in MAS. Full article

Aim: The present study aims to observe the reasons for which the participants have chosen to uptake one of the COVID-19 vaccines approved in Romania. Thus, it will help us to determine whether the reasons are medical in nature, with the respondents’ scope to stay healthy, or if there are other motivations. High rates of vaccine acceptance are essential in the struggle against the COVID-19 pandemic, and trust indicators in other inoculations may be vital for the good management of the vaccination campaign. Methods: The research consisted in applying an online questionnaire in the period January–March 2022 during the fifth wave of COVID-19. The individuals in the target group had to comply with three conditions: they should be inoculated, at least 18 years of age and Romanian residents. The questionnaire was administered to 2297 people and structured to obtain socio-demographic data, determine confidence in mandatory and optional vaccines (rotavirus, hepatitis A, meningococcal vaccine, etc.) and extract the reasons why respondents chose to be vaccinated. Results: The data extracted from the questionnaire reveal a high rate of confidence of participants in the vaccines included in the national vaccination scheme (98.6%) and in the optional vaccines other than anti-COVID-19 (97.2%). Of the respondents, 23.4% had at least one positive test for COVID-19. Although the entire sample is vaccinated against the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the reasons behind the decision to vaccinate are not only medical in nature, thus, 18.3% were motivated by “protecting their own health/protection against the virus”, 17% due to “fear of the disease”, 8.8% for getting back to normal life and ending the pandemic and 8.5% due to government restrictions/vaccination certificate. Conclusions: In our study, we were able to validate the research hypothesis that the reasons for vaccine acceptance are multiple and not only medical (health protection, existing co-morbidities, etc.) and to show that although vaccination has been accepted, some participants believe in conspiracy theories, including those that try to convince people of the harmfulness of the vaccine. In addition, by applying Pearson, Kendall and Spearman correlation tests, we observed that indicators showing high confidence in optional vaccines relate strongly with the decision to vaccinate against COVID-19. Climate change is a complex topic and hence makes teaching climate change a demanding task. This is especially because climate change still represents a (socially) controversial topic and students may be confronted with misrepresentations and misinformation about climate change in their daily lives. Therefore, it is important that science teachers are equipped with skills to properly respond to or “debunk” climate change misinformation, and to train their students on how to identify and respond to misinformation. To address this, we developed an intervention based on inoculation theory and known debunking techniques to foster physics pre-service teachers’ debunking skills as well as their self-efficacy to confront climate misinformation. Through the intervention, we showed that the participants increased their debunking skills and they showed more accurate assessments of their own skills. We conclude that this approach is promising to foster pre-service teachers’ perceived competence to teach the demanding topic of climate change. Finally, our approach generally shows potential in preparing future teachers to teach other controversial topics where misinformation is abundant. Full article

The regolith environment and associated organic material on Ceres is analogous to environments that existed on Earth 3–4 billion years ago. This has implications not only for abiogenesis and the theory of transpermia, but it provides context for developing a framework to contrast the limits of Earth’s biosphere with extraterrestrial environments of interest. In this study, substrate utilisation by the ice-associated bacterium Colwellia hornerae was examined with respect to three aliphatic organic hydrocarbons that may be present on Ceres: dodecane, isobutyronitrile, and dioctyl-sulphide. Following inoculation into a phyllosilicate regolith spiked with a hydrocarbon (1% or 20% organic concentration wt%), cell density, electron transport activity, oxygen consumption, and the production of ATP, NADPH, and protein in C. hornerae was monitored for a period of 32 days. Microbial growth kinetics were correlated with changes in bioavailable carbon, nitrogen, and sulphur. We provide compelling evidence that C. hornerae can survive and grow by utilising isobutyronitrile and, in particular, dodecane. Cellular growth, electron transport activity, and oxygen consumption increased significantly in dodecane at 20 wt% compared to only minor growth at 1 wt%. Importantly, the reduction in total carbon, nitrogen, and sulphur observed at 20 wt% is attributed to biotic, rather than abiotic, processes. This study illustrates that short-term bacterial incubation studies using exotic substrates provide a useful indicator of habitability. We suggest that replicating the regolith environment of Ceres warrants further study and that this dwarf planet could be a valid target for future exploratory missions. Full article

Influenza A virus subtype H1N1 has caused global pandemics like the “Spanish flu” in 1918 and the 2009 H1N1 pandemic several times. H1N1 remains in circulation and survives in multiple animal sources, including wild birds. Surveillance during the winter of 2018–2019 in Korea revealed two H1N1 isolates in samples collected from wild bird feces: KNU18-64 (A/Greater white-fronted goose/South Korea/KNU18-64/2018(H1N1)) and WKU19-4 (A/wild bird/South Korea/WKU19-4/2019(H1N1)). Phylogenetic analysis indicated that M gene of KNU18-64(H1N1) isolate resembles that of the Alaskan avian influenza virus, whereas WKU19-4(H1N1) appears to be closer to the Mongolian virus. Molecular characterization revealed that they harbor the amino acid sequence PSIQRS↓GLF and are low-pathogenicity influenza viruses. In particular, the two isolates harbored three different mutation sites, indicating that they have different virulence characteristics. The mutations in the PB1-F2 and PA protein of WKU19-4(H1N1) indicate increasing polymerase activity. These results corroborate the kinetic growth data for WKU19-4 in MDCK cells: a dramatic increase in the viral titer after 12 h post-inoculation compared with that in the control group H1N1 (CA/04/09(pdm09)). The KNU18-64(H1N1) isolate carries mutations indicating an increase in mammal adaptation; this characterization was confirmed by the animal study in mice. The KNU18-64(H1N1) group showed the presence of viruses in the lungs at days 3 and 6 post-infection, with titers of 2.71 ± 0.16 and 3.71 ± 0.25 log10(TCID50/mL), respectively, whereas the virus was only detected in the WKU19-4(H1N1) group at day 6 post-infection, with a lower titer of 2.75 ± 0.51 log10(TCID50/mL). The present study supports the theory that there is a relationship between Korea and America with regard to reassortment to produce novel viral strains. Therefore, there is a need for increased surveillance of influenza virus circulation in free-flying and wild land-based birds in Korea, particularly with regard to Alaskan and Asian strains. Conspiracy narratives and speculative rumors of a conspiracist nature are intermittently popular in youth culture, as well as in political discourse. The general motivations of conspiracy beliefs relate to essential needs (for knowledge, to feel safe and secure, to feel good about oneself and one’s group), but evidence shows these needs are not actually served by conspiracy beliefs. Conspiracy theories tend to be explanations that conflict with best academic knowledge, and belief in them leads to less support for democratic processes and institutions. They play a role in political polarization, and they are used in identity-protective cognition. They may both express and arouse “strong feelings and divide communities and society”. Conspiracy theories as a general topic thus satisfy general criteria for controversial issues. At the same time, they are particularly interesting because they hover between the superficially and the inherently controversial: although in practice often resistant to contradictory evidence, they generally appeal to reason and evidence. While they sometimes are rooted in deep religious and religion-like beliefs, we argue that this makes them good cases for practicing analytical skills that could better serve all the needs above. Since cases and topics can cover the gamut from the subject-related to the cross-curricular and civic behavior, and the skills should be broadly transferable, using conspiracy theories as a topic has a high possible upside. However, conspiracy theories in a school setting have not yet been a topic of much research. This article takes as its starting point interviews with teachers and preliminary investigations of adolescents, before presenting an outline of possible didactic tools for teachers based on the general findings of effective interventions on conspiracy beliefs and related issues. In this article I suggest why a symposium is desirable on the topic of why, despite worldwide increases in IQ since the beginning of the 20th century, there are so many unresolved and dramatic problems in the world. I briefly discuss what some of these problems are, and the paradox of people with higher IQs not only being unable to solve them, but in some cases people being unwilling to address them. I suggest that higher IQ is not always highly relevant to the problems, and in some cases, may displace other skills that better would apply to the solution of the problems. I present a limited-resource model as an adjunct to the augmented theory of successful intelligence. The model suggests that increasing societal emphases on analytical abilities have displaced development and utilization of other skills, especially creative, practical, and wisdom-based ones, that better could be applied to serious world problems. I also discuss the importance of cognitive inoculation against unscrupulous and sometimes malevolent attempts to change belief systems. Full article
