The accelerated global urbanization process has positioned land use/land cover change modeling as a critical component of contemporary geographic science and urban planning research. Traditional approaches face substantial challenges when addressing urban system complexity, multiscale spatial interactions, and high-dimensional data associations, creating urgent demand for sophisticated analytical frameworks. This review comprehensively evaluates machine learning applications in land use prediction through systematic analysis of 74 publications spanning 2020–2024, establishing a taxonomic framework distinguishing traditional machine learning, deep learning, and hybrid methodologies. The review contributes a comprehensive methodological assessment identifying algorithmic evolution patterns and performance benchmarks across diverse geographic contexts. Traditional methods demonstrate sustained reliability, while deep learning architectures excel in complex pattern recognition. Most significantly, hybrid methodologies have emerged as the dominant paradigm through algorithmic complementarity, consistently outperforming single-algorithm implementations. However, contemporary applications face critical constraints including computational complexity, scalability limitations, and interpretability issues impeding practical adoption. This review advances the field by synthesizing fragmented knowledge into a coherent framework and identifying research trajectories toward integrated intelligent systems with explainable artificial intelligence. Autonomous robotic navigation is essential in modern systems for revolutionising various industries that operate in both static and dynamic environments. To achieve this autonomous navigation, various conventional techniques that handle environment mapping, path planning, and motion control as individual modules often face challenges in addressing the complexities of autonomous navigation. Therefore, this paper presents an integrated technique that combines three essential components, such as environment mapping, path planning, and motion control, to enhance autonomous navigation performance. The first component, i.e., the mapping, utilises both binary and probabilistic occupancy maps to represent the environment. The second component is path planning, which incorporates various graph- and sampling-based algorithms such as PRM, A*, Hybrid A*, RRT, RRT*, and BiRRT, which are evaluated in terms of path length, computational time, and safety margin on various maps. The final component, i.e., motion control, utilises both conventional and advanced controller strategies such as PID, FOPID, SFC, and MPC, for better sinusoidal trajectory tracking. The four case studies for path planning and one case study on trajectory tracking on various occupancy maps demonstrated that the A* algorithm and MPC outperformed all the compared techniques in terms of optimal path length, computational time, safety margin, and trajectory tracking error. Thus, the proposed integrated approach reveals that the interplay between mapping fidelity, planning efficiency, and control robustness is vital for reliable autonomous navigation. Full article

Forecasting pedestrian congestion in urban back streets is challenging due to “shadow areas” where CCTV coverage is absent and trajectory data cannot be directly collected. To address these gaps, we propose the Peak-aware Graph-attention Temporal Fusion Transformer (PGTFT), a lightweight hybrid model that extends the Temporal Fusion Transformer by integrating a non-parametric attention-based Graph Convolutional Network, a peak-aware Gated Residual Network, and a Peak-weighted Quantile Loss. The model leverages both physical connectivity and functional similarity between roads through a fused adjacency matrix, while enhancing sensitivity to high-congestion events. Using real-world trajectory data from 38 CCTVs in Anyang, South Korea, experiments show that PGTFT outperforms LSTM, TFT, and GCN-TFT across different sparsity settings. Under sparse 5 m neighbor conditions, the model achieved the lowest MAE (0.059) and RMSE (0.102), while under denser 30 m settings it maintained superior accuracy with standard quantile loss. Importantly, PGTFT requires only 1.54 million parameters—about half the size of conventional Transformer–GCN hybrids—while delivering equal or better predictive performance. These results demonstrate that PGTFT is both parameter-efficient and robust, offering strong potential for deployment in smart city monitoring, emergency response, and transportation planning, as well as a practical approach to addressing data sparsity in urban sensing systems. This paper presents a neural network–driven framework for solving the inverse problem of initial parameter estimation in air-dropped package missions. Unlike traditional analytical methods, which are computationally intensive and often impractical in real time, the proposed system leverages the flexibility of multilayer perceptrons to model both forward and inverse relationships between drop conditions and flight outcomes. In the forward stage, a trained network predicts range, flight time, and impact velocity from predefined release parameters. In the inverse stage, a deeper neural model reconstructs the required release velocity, angle, and altitude directly from the desired operational outcomes. By employing a hybrid workflow—combining physics-based simulation with neural approximation—our approach generates large, high-quality datasets at low computational cost. Results demonstrate that the inverse network achieves high accuracy across deterministic and stochastic tests, with minimal error when operating within the training domain. The study confirms the suitability of neural architectures for tackling complex, nonlinear identification tasks in precision airdrop operations. Beyond their technical efficiency, such models enable agile, GPS-independent mission planning, offering a reliable and low-cost decision support tool for humanitarian aid, scientific research, and defense logistics. This work highlights how artificial intelligence can transform conventional trajectory design into a fast, adaptive, and autonomous capability. Full article

Probabilistic roadmap (PRM) methods are widely used for robot navigation in both 2D and 3D environments; however, a major drawback is that the raw paths tend to be jagged. Executing a trajectory along such paths can lead to significant overshoots and tight turns, making it difficult to achieve a near-optimal solution under motion constraints. This paper presents an enhanced PRM-based path planning approach designed to improve path quality and computational efficiency. The method integrates advanced sampling strategies, adaptive neighbor selection with spatial data structures, and multi-stage path post-processing. In particular, shortcut smoothing and polynomial fitting are used to generate smoother trajectories suitable for motion-constrained robots. The proposed hybrid sampling scheme biases sample generation toward critical regions—near obstacles, in narrow passages, and between the start and goal—to improve graph connectivity in challenging areas. An adaptive k-d tree-based connection strategy then efficiently builds a roadmap using variable connection radii guided by PRM* theory. Once a path is found using an any-angle graph search, post-processing is applied to refine it. Unnecessary waypoints are removed via line-of-sight shortcuts, and the final trajectory is smoothed using a fitted polynomial curve. The resulting paths are shorter and exhibit gentler turns, making them more feasible for execution. In simulated complex scenarios, including narrow corridors and cluttered environments, the advanced PRM achieved a 100% success rate where standard PRM frequently failed. It also reduced calculation time to 30% and peak turning angle by up to 50% compared to conventional methods. The approach supports dynamic re-planning: when the environment changes, the roadmap is efficiently updated rather than rebuilt from scratch. Furthermore, the use of an adaptive k-d tree structure and incremental roadmap updates leads to an order-of-magnitude speedup in the connection phase. These improvements significantly increase the planner’s path quality, runtime performance, and reliability. Quantitative results are provided to substantiate the performance gains of the proposed method. Full article

Addressing the challenges of inefficient prolonged trajectory resolution and unreliable dynamic obstacle avoidance for intelligent vehicles in complex confined environments, this study proposes an innovative hybrid path planning method. Its core novelty is the deep integration of an enhanced A* algorithm for smooth global planning with a fuzzy logic-controlled Dynamic Window Approach (DWA). The enhanced A* generates efficient and smooth global paths, while fuzzy control significantly improves DWA’s robustness in dynamic, uncertain scenarios. This hybrid strategy achieves efficient synergy between global optimality and local reactive obstacle avoidance. Simulations demonstrate its superiority over conventional A* or DWA in path length, planning efficiency, and obstacle avoidance success rate. Experimental validation on a physical platform in simulated complex scenarios shows an average trajectory deviation ≤ 7.14%. The work provides an effective theoretical and methodological framework for navigation in constrained spaces, offering significant value for practical applications like logistics and automated parking. Smart routing has emerged as a critical enabler of sustainable shipping, addressing the growing demand for energy-efficient, safe, and adaptive vessel navigation in both maritime and inland waterborne transport. This review examines the current landscape of trajectory optimization approaches by analyzing selected peer-reviewed studies and categorizing them into six thematic areas: AI/ML-based prediction, optimization and path planning algorithms, data-driven methods using AIS and GIS, weather routing and environmental modeling, digital platforms and decision support systems, and hybrid or rule-based frameworks for autonomous navigation. The analysis highlights recent advances in deep learning for trajectory forecasting, multi-objective and heuristic optimization techniques, and the use of real-time environmental data in routing decisions. Supplemental review using Scopus-based topic mapping confirms the centrality of integrated digital strategies, high-performance computing, and physics-informed modeling in emerging research. Despite notable progress, the field remains fragmented, with limited real-time integration, underexplored regulatory alignment, and a lack of explainable AI applications. The review concludes by outlining future directions, including the development of hybrid and interpretable optimization frameworks, and expanding research tailored to inland navigation with its distinct operational challenges. These insights aim to support the design of next-generation navigation systems that are robust, intelligent, and environmentally compliant. Full article

The development of efficient and reliable trajectory-planning strategies for swarms of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is an increasingly important area of research, with applications in surveillance, search and rescue, smart agriculture, defence operations, and communication networks. This article provides a comprehensive and critical review of the various techniques available for UAV swarm trajectory planning, which can be broadly categorised into three main groups: traditional algorithms, biologically inspired metaheuristics, and modern artificial intelligence (AI)-based methods. The study examines cutting-edge research, comparing key aspects of trajectory planning, including computational efficiency, scalability, inter-UAV coordination, energy consumption, and robustness in uncertain environments. The strengths and weaknesses of these algorithms are discussed in detail, particularly in the context of collision avoidance, adaptive decision making, and the balance between centralised and decentralised control. Additionally, the review highlights hybrid frameworks that combine the global optimisation power of bio-inspired algorithms with the real-time adaptability of AI-based approaches, aiming to achieve an effective exploration–exploitation trade-off in multi-agent environments. Lastly, the article addresses the major challenges in UAV swarm trajectory planning, including multidimensional trajectory spaces, nonlinear dynamics, and real-time adaptation. It also identifies promising directions for future research. Robots with parallelogram mechanisms are widely employed in industrial applications due to their mechanical rigidity and precise motion control. However, the analytical definition of feasible workspace regions free from self-collisions remains an open challenge, especially considering the nonlinear and composite nature of such regions. This work introduces a mathematical model grounded in a collision theorem that formalizes boundary functions based on joint variables and geometric constraints. These functions explicitly define the envelope of safe configurations by evaluating relative positions between critical structural components. Using the MinervaBotV3 as a case study, the symbolic joint-space boundaries and their corresponding geometric regions in both 2D and 3D are computed and visualized. The feasible region is refined through centroid-based scaling to introduce safety margins and avoid singularities. The results show that this framework enables analytically continuous workspace representations, improving trajectory planning and reliability in constrained environments. Future work will extend this method to spatial mechanisms and real-time implementations in hybrid robotic systems. Full article

In this paper, a hierarchical optimization framework combining Bayesian and pseudospectral approaches is developed to solve the challenging problem of hybrid trajectory planning for energy-augmented hypersonic skip–glide vehicles that have plane symmetry. Traditional trajectory optimization methods usually deal with discrete energy injection timing and continuous flight control variables separately, yielding suboptimal solutions. To achieve global optimality, this proposed framework optimizes the discrete and continuous variables simultaneously, conducting Bayesian optimization for discrete global search and hp-adaptive pseudospectral algorithm for local continuous optimization. A rigorous dynamic model, considering Earth’s oblateness, rotation, aerodynamic interactions, and thrust dynamics, is established to ensure high-fidelity trajectory simulation. Numerical simulation through three representative tests indicates significant improvements: The hp-adaptive pseudospectral method achieves over 20% higher computational efficiency and accuracy compared to standard pseudospectral methods. Bayesian optimization demonstrates rapid global convergence within 22 iterations, achieving the optimal single augmentation timing that enhances flight range by up to 55.08%. Further, comprehensive joint optimization with double energy augmentation yields an additional 7.5% range extension compared to randomly selected augmentation timings. The results verify that the proposed hierarchical framework substantially improves the planned trajectory performance and adaptability to the skip–glide trajectories with hybrid maneuver. Focusing on joint-space time-optimal trajectory planning for industrial robots, this study integrates 3-5-3 piecewise polynomial parameterization with an improved Fire Hawk Optimization algorithm (TFHO). Subject to joint position, velocity, and acceleration limits, segment durations are optimized as decision variables. TFHO employs Tent-chaotic initialization to improve the uniformity of initial solutions and a two-phase adaptive Lévy–Gaussian–Cauchy hybrid mutation to balance early global exploration with late local exploitation, mitigating premature convergence and enhancing stability. On benchmark functions, TFHO attains the lowest mean area under the convergence curve (AUC; lower is better). Wilcoxon signed-rank tests show statistically significant improvements over FHO, PSO, GWO, and WOA (p0.05). Ablation studies indicate a pronounced reduction in run-to-run variability: the standard deviation decreases from 0.3157 (FHO) to 0.0023 with TFHO, a 99.27% drop. In an ABB IRB-2600 simulation case, the execution time is shortened from 12.00 s to 9.88 s (−17.66%) while preserving smooth and continuous kinematic profiles (position, velocity, and acceleration), demonstrating practical engineering applicability. In underground coal mines, narrow and irregular tunnels, dust, and gas hazards pose significant challenges to robotic path planning, particularly for shotcrete operations. The traditional A* algorithm has the limitations of limited safety, excessive node expansion, and insufficient dynamic obstacle avoidance capabilities. To address these, a hybrid algorithm integrating adaptive A*, Q-learning, and the Dynamic Window Approach (DWA) is proposed. The A* component is enhanced through improvements to its evaluation function and node selection strategy, incorporating dynamically adjustable neighborhood sampling to improve search efficiency. Q-learning re-plans unsafe trajectories in complex environments using a redesigned reward mechanism and an adaptive exploration strategy. The DWA module facilitates real-time obstacle avoidance in dynamic scenarios by optimizing both the velocity space and the trajectory evaluation process. The simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm reduces the number of path nodes by approximately 30%, reduces the computational time by approximately 20% on 200 × 200 grids, and increases the path length by only 10%. These results demonstrate that the proposed approach effectively balances global path optimality with local adaptability, significantly improving the safety and real-time performance in complex underground environments. This study presents a comprehensive comparison between classical sampling-based motion planners from the Open Motion Planning Library (OMPL) and a learning-based planner based on Soft Actor–Critic (SAC) for motion planning in industrial robotic arms. Using a UR3e robot equipped with an RG2 gripper, we constructed a large-scale dataset of over 100,000 collision-free trajectories generated with MoveIt-integrated OMPL planners. These trajectories were used to train a DRL agent via curriculum learning and expert demonstrations. Both approaches were evaluated on key metrics such as planning time, success rate, and trajectory smoothness. Results show that the DRL-based planner achieves higher success rates and significantly lower planning times, producing more compact and deterministic trajectories. Time-optimal parameterization using TOPPRA ensured the dynamic feasibility of all trajectories. While classical planners retain advantages in zero-shot adaptability and environmental generality, our findings highlight the potential of DRL for real-time and high-throughput motion planning in industrial contexts. This work provides practical insights into the trade-offs between traditional and learning-based planning paradigms, paving the way for hybrid architectures that combine their strengths. Full article

Addressing key challenges in unstructured environments, including local optimum traps, limited real-time interaction, and convergence difficulties, this research pioneers a hybrid reinforcement learning approach that combines simulated annealing (SA) with proximal policy optimization (PPO) for robotic arm trajectory planning. The framework enables the accurate, collision-free grasping of randomly appearing objects in dynamic obstacles through three key innovations: a probabilistically enhanced simulation environment with a 20% obstacle generation rate; an optimized state-action space featuring 12-dimensional environment coding and 6-DoF joint control; and an SA-PPO algorithm that dynamically adjusts the learning rate to balance exploration and convergence. Experimental results show a 6.52% increase in success rate (98% vs. 92%) and a 7.14% reduction in steps per set compared to the baseline PPO. A real deployment on the AUBO-i5 robotic arm enables real machine grasping, validating a robust transfer from simulation to reality. This work establishes a new paradigm for adaptive robot manipulation in industrial scenarios requiring a real-time response to environmental uncertainty. Full article

Multi-objective Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) path planning in complex 3D environments presents a fundamental challenge requiring the simultaneous optimization of conflicting objectives such as path length, safety, altitude constraints, and smoothness. This study proposes a novel hybrid framework, termed QL-MOPSO, that integrates reinforcement learning with metaheuristic optimization through a three-stage hierarchical architecture. The framework employs Q-learning to generate a global guidance path in a discretized 2D grid environment using an eight-directional symmetric action space that embodies rotational symmetry at π/4 intervals, ensuring uniform exploration capabilities and unbiased path planning. A crucial intermediate stage transforms the discrete 2D path into a 3D initial trajectory, bridging the gap between discrete learning and continuous optimization domains. The MOPSO algorithm then performs fine-grained refinement in continuous 3D space, guided by a novel Q-learning path deviation objective that ensures continuous knowledge transfer throughout the optimization process. Experimental results demonstrate that the symmetric action space design yields 20.6% shorter paths compared to asymmetric alternatives, while the complete QL-MOPSO framework achieves 5% path length reduction and significantly faster convergence compared to standard MOPSO. The proposed method successfully generates Pareto-optimal solutions that balance multiple objectives while leveraging the symmetry-aware guidance mechanism to avoid local optima and accelerate convergence, offering a robust solution for complex multi-objective UAV path planning problems.
