Animals may offer vital psychosocial support, particularly for neurodiverse individuals. However, evidence surrounding the effects of pet ownership remains equivocal, especially in relation to cat–human dynamics. This study explored the relationship between cat–human-related factors (CHRFs) and psychological well-being in a sample of 127 adults, including individuals formally diagnosed with autism (30), ADHD (15), and/or co-occurring autism and ADHD (AuADHD; 22). Participants completed measures assessing neurodiverse traits, CHRF engagement, and symptoms of anxiety, depression, and suicidality. Spearman’s correlations analysed the relationships between CHRFs, neurodiverse traits, and well-being. Kruskal–Wallis tests established group differences in well-being and engagement in CHRFs between individuals with and without neurodevelopmental differences. The findings confirmed that autistic and ADHD traits were positively associated with greater anxiety, depression, and suicidality. Autistic individuals reported significantly elevated anxiety and depression; co-occurring diagnoses (AuADHD) were associated with heightened anxiety. Neurodiverse and neurotypical individuals demonstrated similar patterns of CHRF engagement. Several CHRFs, such as anxious cat behaviour, inability to provide for the cat, poor cat health, and close proximity, were linked to negative well-being outcomes. These findings highlight the nuanced, bi-directional nature of cat–human interactions, underscoring the importance of mitigating negative relational factors to support mental health in neurodiverse populations. Intimate relationship stability is fundamental to human wellbeing, yet its quantitative assessment faces dual challenges: the inherent subjectivity of psychological constructs and the complexity of social ecosystems. Symmetry, as a fundamental structural feature of social interaction, plays a pivotal role in shaping relational dynamics. To address these limitations, this study proposes an innovative computational framework that integrates Fuzzy Set Theory with Social Network Analysis (SNA). The framework consists of two complementary components: (1) a psychologically grounded fuzzy assessment model that employs differentiated membership functions to transform discrete subjective ratings into continuous and interpretable relationship quality indices and (2) an enhanced Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) threat detection model that utilizes Weighted Mahalanobis Distance to accurately identify and cluster potential interference sources within social networks. Empirical validation using a simulated dataset—comprising typical characteristic samples from 10 couples—demonstrates that the proposed framework not only generates interpretable relationship diagnostics by correcting biases associated with traditional averaging methods, but also achieves high precision in threat identification. The results indicate that stable relationships exhibit greater symmetry in partner interactions, whereas threatened nodes display structural and behavioural asymmetry. This study establishes a rigorous mathematical paradigm—“Subjective Fuzzification → Multidimensional Feature Engineering → Intelligent Clustering”—for relationship science, thereby advancing the field from descriptive analysis toward data-driven, quantitative evaluation and laying a foundation for systematic assessment of relational health. This study investigates how first responder departments in Virginia’s 8th congressional district incorporate AI to enhance resilience within their teams and the communities they serve. Drawing on interviews with key personnel, the study employs an inductive thematic analysis to trace how AI is perceived to influence emergency communication, situational awareness, decision-making, and disaster management. Findings reveal an interplay between AI tools and human-centered resilience, with four key themes emerging: community engagement, training, team cohesion, and mental health. These themes underscore that AI is a technical asset that can support emotional well-being, institutional trust, and enhance operational readiness. The study contributes to ongoing debates on AI’s role in disaster management by underlining the human dimensions of technology alongside its implications for community resilience. Full article

Modern lifestyles are increasingly plagued by physical inactivity, social disconnection, digital addiction, and excessive time indoors—factors that negatively impact the health and well-being of both humans and their companion dogs (Canis familiaris). Evidence shows that nature exposure, physical activity, and human–animal bond (HAB) each enhance physical, mental, and social well-being, yet these domains have rarely been examined together as an integrated therapeutic triad. We introduce a new conceptual framework of bonded green exercise, defined as shared physical activity between a bonded human and dog in natural environments. Synthesizing existing evidence across human and canine sciences into a testable conceptual integration, we posit that bonded green exercise may plausibly activate evolutionarily conserved, synergistic mechanisms of physiological, behavioural, and affective co-regulation. Four testable hypotheses are proposed: (H1) triadic synergy: combined domains produce greater benefits than additive effects; (H2) heterospecific benefit: parallel health gains occur in both species; (H3) behavioural amplification: dogs acts as catalysts to drive human participation in nature-based activity; and (H4) scalable health promotion: bonded green exercise represents a low-cost, accessible, One Health approach with population-level potential. This framework highlights how intentional, shared physical activity in nature may potentially offer a novel low-cost and accessible model for enhancing health, lifespan, welfare, and ecological stewardship across species. Housing stock is observed to be associated with high carbon emissions, high fuel poverty and low comfort levels in the UK. Retrofitting the housing stock is one of the best solutions to address these problems. This paper directly corresponds with human and planetary health in terms of climate change, human health and mental health by addressing the challenges of housing retrofit at scale. Retrofitting houses can also contribute to social equity, reduced use of planetary resources and better financial and physical comfort. Despite the availability of the right technology, government grants and the potential to acquire supply chain and skilled labour, the progress of retrofit is extremely poor. Importantly, the UK is off track to achieve net zero by 2050, and the housing stock contributes 18.72% of the total emissions. The problem is further exacerbated by the 30.4 million units of housing stock. Robust strategies are required to retrofit the housing stock at scale. The study uses a qualitative modelling method under the diffusion of innovations theory to formulate a retrofit-at-scale strategy for the UK. Findings recommend focusing on skill development, show homes, research and innovation, supply chain development, business models, government grants and regulatory tools in a trajectory from 2025 to 2050. The proposed strategy is aligned with the segments of the diffusion of innovation theory. Although the analysis was performed with reference to the UK, the findings are transferable, considering the broader and urgent concerns related to human and planetary health. Full article

Amid escalating ecological degradation, social fragmentation, and rising mental health challenges—especially in rural and agricultural communities—there is an urgent need to reimagine systems that support both planetary and human flourishing. This viewpoint examines an emerging paradigm in agriculture that emphasizes the role of farmers’ inner development in fostering practices that enhance ecological health, community well-being, and a resilient food system. A key goal is to draw more academic attention to growing community calls for more holistic, relational, and spiritually grounded approaches to food systems as an important focus for ongoing research. Drawing on diverse case studies from Japan, India, and Europe, we examine how small-scale and natural farming initiatives are integrating inner development, universal human values, and ecological consciousness. These case studies were developed and/or refined through a program led by the Conscious Food Systems Alliance (CoFSA), an initiative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) that seeks to integrate inner transformation with sustainable food systems change. The initiatives are intended as illustrative examples of how agriculture can transcend its conventional, anthropocentric role as a food production system to become a site for cultivating deeper self-awareness, spiritual connection, and regenerative relationships with nature. Participants in these cases reported significant shifts in mindset—from materialistic and extractive worldviews to more relational and value-driven orientations rooted in care, cooperation, and sustainability. Core practices such as mindfulness, experiential learning, and spiritual ecology helped reframe farming as a holistic process that nurtures both land and life. These exploratory case studies suggest that when farmers are supported in aligning with inner values and natural systems, they become empowered as agents of systemic change. By linking personal growth with planetary stewardship, these models offer pathways toward more integrated, life-affirming approaches to agriculture and future academic research. Full article

The paper introduces ‘transformative’ curriculum initiatives such as education for sustainable development (ESD) and global citizenship education (GCED), which address ‘macro’ challenges such as climate change, together with ‘holistic’ approaches to student learning such as ‘social and emotional learning’ (SEL) and education for ‘life skills’, ‘21st century skills’, ‘transversal competencies’, AI-related ethics, and ‘health and well-being.’ These are reflected in Section 6 of the 2023 UNESCO Recommendation on Education for Peace, Human Rights and Sustainable Development. It is suggested that such broad goals put forward at global policy level may serve as inspiration for national context-specific programming, while also needing better integration of national insights and cultural differences into global discourse. The paper aims to provide insights to education policy-makers responsible for national curriculum, textbooks and other learning resources, teacher training and examination processes, helping them to promote the human values, integrity and sense of agency needed by students in a time of multiple global and personal challenges. This requires an innovative approach to curricula for established school subjects and can be included in curricula being developed for AI literacy and related ethics. Research into the integration of transformative and holistic dimensions into curricula, materials, teacher preparation, and assessment is needed, as well as ongoing monitoring and feedback. AI-supported networking and resource sharing at local, national and international level can support implementation of transformative and holistic learning, to maintain and strengthen the human dimensions of learning. This paper presents the concepts of a vehicle pressure regulation ventilation system based on the results of absolute pressure measurements in land transport vehicles: passenger cars, buses and trains. Despite the fact that absolute pressure affects human well-being and health, this parameter is often overlooked in studies assessing thermal comfort. Absolute pressure measurements were taken during normal passenger transport operation. The studies were conducted for various terrain types: lowlands, highlands, and mountains. Absolute pressure fluctuations in land transport depended primarily on altitude, with the largest atmospheric pressure differences recorded in mountains and the smallest in lowlands. A pressure change of 8 hPa within a 24 h period constitutes an unfavorable mechanical stimulus for the human body and causes changes in the excitability of the nervous system. In all measurement series, absolute pressure fluctuations exceeded 8 hPa. Based on the results of absolute pressure measurements and altitude, a simplified model for predicting absolute pressure in transport vehicles was developed. To reduce absolute pressure fluctuations inside passenger land vehicle cabins, a ventilation scheme regulating pressure inside land vehicle cabins was proposed. Full article

Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna Jacq.) is a medicinal and nutritional plant widely recognized for its rich phytochemical composition and diverse health-promoting properties. The fruit, leaves, and flowers contain significant amounts of polyphenols, flavonoids, flavonols, phenolic acids and dye compounds with antioxidant properties that contribute to its strong antioxidant capacity. Numerous studies have demonstrated hawthorn’s beneficial effects on cardiovascular health, including regulation of blood pressure, lipid metabolism, and cardiac function. Additionally, hawthorn exhibits anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, hypolipidemic, and antidiabetic properties, supporting its role in the prevention and management of chronic diseases. Its potential as a functional food ingredient and natural health supplement is increasingly recognized. However, further clinical trials and standardization of bioactive components are needed to confirm its efficacy, safety, and optimal dosage. Overall, hawthorn represents a valuable natural resource for promoting human health and well-being through diet and phytotherapy. Therefore, the aim of this study is to present—based on the scientific literature—the antioxidant properties of hawthorn and to assess the possibility of using this plant as a functional ingredient. This qualitative single-case study examines how spirituality promotes mental health within a stigmatized occupation by analyzing an in-depth interview with “Perla,” a 62-year-old Mexican woman with decades of experience in sex work. Guided by Virginia Satir’s Transformational Systemic Therapy (STST), specifically the Self-Mandala and Iceberg Metaphor, we conceptualize spirituality as a universal human dimension of meaning, moral orientation, and relational connection that may be expressed within or beyond formal religion. Narrative thematic analysis identifies processes through which Perla cultivates congruence (alignment of inner experience and outward conduct), safeguards dignity, and sustains hope amid systemic constraints. Her Catholic practices (prayer, ritual boundaries regarding Eucharist) coexist with a broader spiritual agency that supports self-worth, emotional regulation, boundary-setting, and coherent identity, factors associated with mental well-being. Interdisciplinary implications bridge marriage and family therapy, psychology, pastoral care, and cultural studies. Clinically, we translate Satir’s constructs (yearnings, perceptions, expectations, coping stances) into practical assessment and intervention steps that can be applied in secular settings without religious presuppositions. Analytic rigor was supported through reflective memoing, a structured three-level coding process, constant comparison, and verification by a second coder. The case challenges pathologizing frames of sex workers by demonstrating how spirituality can function as a protective, growth-oriented resource that fosters agency and moral coherence. Full article

Background: The belief that “sugar feeds cancer” is widespread and has strongly influenced public perceptions, patient behavior, and dietary recommendations, despite uncertainty regarding its scientific validity. This belief largely stems from misinterpretation of the Warburg effect, which describes altered glucose metabolism in cancer cells rather than dietary sugar dependence. The objective of this review was to critically evaluate whether dietary sugar intake directly contributes to cancer development or progression by examining the totality of epidemiological, experimental, and mechanistic evidence. Methods: We conducted a narrative review of human epidemiological studies, experimental animal and cell-based models, and mechanistic investigations published between 1980 and July 2025. Evidence was synthesized across cancer types, sugar sources, and biological pathways, with careful consideration of study design, exposure relevance, and key confounders, including obesity, insulin resistance, and overall dietary patterns. Results: Across cancer types, epidemiological evidence showed predominantly null or inconsistent associations between sugar intake and cancer risk or outcomes, with positive findings largely confined to metabolically susceptible subgroups and often attenuated after adjustment for adiposity and energy intake. Experimental studies suggested potential tumor-promoting effects under non-physiological conditions, while mechanistic data indicated that sugar influences cancer risk indirectly through insulin signaling, inflammation, and metabolic dysfunction rather than direct tumor fueling. Conclusions: Current evidence does not support the hypothesis that dietary sugar directly “feeds” cancer in humans. Overemphasis on sugar avoidance risks nutritional and psychological harm, particularly among cancer patients. Evidence-based guidance should prioritize overall dietary quality, metabolic health, and patient well-being rather than isolated sugar restriction. Full article

This paper presents the results of an integrated research and design process developed within the Master’s study programme in Architecture at the University of Belgrade—Faculty of Architecture, aimed at exploring architectural agency in conditions of ecological degradation, declining biodiversity, and the urgent need for regenerative transformation of the built environment. Moving beyond technologically driven notions of “green design,” the study investigates architectural approaches that support ecosystem restoration, biodiversity enhancement, and multispecies coexistence while strengthening health and well-being. Grounded in a three-phase methodological framework, the research (1) formulates conceptual models of therapeutic landscapes through typo-morphological, place-based, and adventure-based analytical approaches; (2) evaluates these models using the New European Bauhaus (NEB) Checklist to assess their alignment with the core values of sustainability, beauty, and togetherness; and (3) synthesizes the findings into regenerative design scenarios that integrate ecological processes, multisensory experience, and community participation. The results position therapeutic landscapes as a spatial practice in which architecture functions as ecological infrastructure, a metabolic system where natural cycles, cultural meanings, bodily experiences, and more-than-human agencies interact. In this sense, architectural design becomes the basis for re-naturalization, regeneration, ecological care, multisensory experience, and resilience in urban, peri-urban, and rural communities. Over a quarter of human pregnancies are associated with complications, including fetal growth restriction, pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes. These are major causes of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality, and also lead to a 3–5-fold increased risk of subsequent development of cardio-metabolic diseases. Although the mechanistic details remain elusive, a dysfunctional placenta is central to the pathophysiology of these conditions. The placenta ensures sufficient nutrient supply to the fetus without compromising maternal wellbeing. This balance is achieved by the secretion of large quantities of placental-derived peptide hormones into the maternal circulation. Consequently, the placenta is susceptible to endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, and we were the first to demonstrate the presence of ER stress in placentas from complicated pregnancies. The mouse placenta provides an ideal model for studying the impact of ER stress as it is composed of two distinct regions, an endocrine zone and a transport zone. Therefore, perturbation of placental endocrine function by ER stress can be generated without directly affecting its capacity for nutrient exchange. In this review, we summarise the current literature on how transgenic mouse models enhance our understanding of ER stress-mediated perturbation of placental endocrine function, and its contribution to the pathophysiology of pregnancy complications and life-long health.
