Intravascular biosensors have become a crucial and novel class of devices in healthcare, enabling the constant real-time monitoring of essential physiological parameters directly within the circulatory system. Recent developments in micro- and nanotechnology have relevantly improved the sensitivity, miniaturization, and biocompatibility of these devices, thereby enabling their application in precision medicine. This review summarizes the latest advances in intravascular biosensor technologies, with a special focus on glucose and oxygen level monitoring, blood pressure and heart rate assessment, and early disease diagnostics, as well as modern approaches to drug therapy monitoring and delivery systems. Key challenges such as long-term biostability, signal accuracy, and regulatory approval processes are critical considerations. Innovative strategies, including biodegradable implants, nanomaterial-functionalized surfaces, and integration with artificial intelligence, are regarded as promising avenues to overcome current limitations. This review provides a comprehensive roadmap for upcoming research and the clinical translation of advanced intravascular biosensors with a strong emphasis on their transformative impact on personalized healthcare. The widespread use of pesticides in modern agriculture has significantly enhanced food production by managing pests and diseases; however, their degradation in soil can lead to unintended consequences for soil fertility and nutrient cycling. This review explores the mechanisms of pesticide degradation, both abiotic and biotic, and the soil factors influencing these processes. It critically examines how degradation products impact soil microbial communities, organic matter decomposition, and key nutrient cycles, including nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and micronutrients. This review highlights emerging evidence linking pesticide residues with altered enzymatic activity, disrupted microbial populations, and reduced nutrient bioavailability, potentially compromising soil structure, water retention, and long-term productivity. Additionally, it discusses the broader environmental and agricultural implications, including decreased crop yields, biodiversity loss, and groundwater contamination. Sustainable management strategies such as bioremediation, the use of biochar, eco-friendly pesticides, and integrated pest management (IPM) are evaluated for mitigating these adverse effects. Finally, this review outlines future research directions emphasizing long-term studies, biotechnology innovations, and predictive modeling to support resilient agroecosystems. Maintaining teat-end integrity in dairy cows is essential to preventing intramammary infections (IMIs) in dairy cows, yet the relationship between hyperkeratosis, teat conformation, and mammary health remais underexplored. This study evaluated the relationship between teat-end hyperkeratosis, teat conformation traits, microbial colonization, and somatic cell count (SCC) in milk from 170 cows on ten commercial dairy farms in Santa Catarina, Brazil. During two farm visits, milk and teat-end swab samples from paired teats (one with hyperkeratosis, one without) were analyzed for microbial growth and SCC. SCC data were transformed into somatic cell scores (SCS). Results showed no significant association between hyperkeratosis and mastitis microorganisms, although environmental microorganisms tended to be more frequent in hyperkeratotic teats (p = 0.0778). Major microorganisms in milk were significantly associated with higher SCC (p = 0.0132). No relationship was observed between teat conformation traits and hyperkeratosis. These findings suggest that hyperkeratosis may subtly influence the teat canal to environmental bacterial colonization, underscoring the need for improved milking management practices to minimize hyperkeratosis and associated mastitis risks. The global rise in antimicrobial resistance poses a major threat to public health, with multidrug-resistant bacterial infections expected to surpass cancer in mortality by 2050. As traditional antibiotic pipelines stagnate, novel therapeutic alternatives are critically needed. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), particularly those derived from marine organisms, have emerged as promising antimicrobial candidates due to their broad-spectrum activity, structural diversity, and distinctive mechanisms of action. Unlike conventional antibiotics, AMPs can disrupt microbial membranes, inhibit biofilm formation, and even modulate immune responses, making them highly effective against resistant bacteria. This review highlights the potential of marine AMPs as next-generation therapeutics, emphasizing their efficacy against multidrug-resistant pathogens and biofilm-associated infections. Furthermore, marine AMPs show promise in combating persister cells and disrupting quorum sensing pathways, offering new strategies for tackling chronic infections. Despite their potential, challenges such as production scalability and limited clinical validation remain; nevertheless, the use of new technologies and bioinformatic tools is accelerating the discovery and optimization of these peptides, paving the way for bypassing these challenges. This review consolidates current findings on marine AMPs, advocating for their continued exploration as viable tools in the fight against antimicrobial resistance. Full article

Background: Cervical cancer ranks among the most prevalent tumors in low-income countries, with the Pap test as one of the primary screening tools. The Pap smear detects abnormal cells, the CLART test identifies specific HPV genotypes, and HPV self-sampling allows for self-collected HPV testing. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of the first smartphone-based health device for home-collection HPV testing. Methods: Enrolled patients during the gynecological examination underwent three different samplings: Pap smear, HPV DNA genotyping test CLART, and vaginal HPV-Selfy swab. Each patient received a kit including an activation code, vaginal swab, and instructions. After performing the self-sample, patients returned the kit to our laboratory. Both the samples collected by the gynecologist and those collected by the patients themselves were analyzed. Results: A total of 277 patients were enrolled, with 226 self-collected swabs received for analysis. The assay yielded valid results for both self-collected and clinician-collected swabs in 190 patients. When comparing these results with paired clinician-taken vaginal swabs, we observed an agreement of 95.2% (Cohen’s Kappa: 0.845). We report an agreement of 93.7% (Cohen’s Kappa: 0.798). Conclusions: The study demonstrated the feasibility of HPV-Selfy as a complementary tool in cervical cancer screening, especially where adherence to traditional surveillance is low. Full article

Background/Objective: Executive functions (EFs) are essential in the daily management of arthritis, as they influence treatment adherence, decision-making, and the ability to cope with disease-related challenges. The objective of this study was to compare EFs alongside functional status and quality of life in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and examine their associations with disease activity and clinical variables. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 140 patients (70 RA, 70 PsA) were assessed using the Stroop-TBAG, Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), and Adult Executive Functioning Inventory (ADEXI). Functional status and quality of life were measured with the Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) and WHOQOL-BREF, respectively. Correlations with disease activity (DAS28-CRP), age, and disease duration were examined. Results: RA patients had significantly higher disease activity and longer disease duration. They showed poorer performance on the Stroop Test (color–word time: 61.6 ± 14.8 vs. 52.4 ± 10.9 s, p < 0.001; errors: 3.2 ± 2.1 vs. 2.1 ± 1.5, p = 0.001), more WCST perseverative errors (p = 0.002), and higher ADEXI inhibition scores (13.9 ± 2.5 vs. 12.9 ± 3.0, p = 0.013). DAS28-CRP was correlated with EF impairments, disability, and poorer quality of life in RA (p < 0.05). In PsA, EFs remained relatively stable, although higher disease activity was associated with worse HAQ scores (p = 0.001). Treatment type was not linked to EF, but patients on combination therapy reported lower physical (p = 0.009) and psychological (p = 0.014) quality of life, along with higher HAQ scores (p = 0.016). Conclusions: This study revealed that patients with RA exhibit more pronounced executive dysfunction, along with lower ADL skills and quality of life compared to those with PsA. These findings highlight the need for multidimensional assessment strategies in inflammatory arthritis, especially in RA, where cognitive and functional outcomes are closely tied to clinical burden. Insights on Alcohol-Associated Liver Disease, a Decade of Data from National Survey

Background: Alcohol-associated liver disease (AALD) represents significant health burdens worldwide. This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the AALD outcomes that were incompletely understood. Methods: The current study utilizes data from the National Health and Nutrition and Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2011–2020, using a stratified, multistage probability cluster design. AALD in the NHANES was defined using clinical laboratory data and self-reported alcohol use, among which fibrosis-4 score of >2.67. Analysis is conducted using weighted, logistic, and Cox linear regression. Results: The initial sample included 23,206 participants aged 20 and older, with recorded cardiovascular status and AST/ALT levels. Participants reporting AALD had a higher percentage of college degrees (p < 0.001) and were more likely to be daily smokers. Asians exhibited the highest rates of AALD compared to other demographics (p < 0.001). The prevalence in private insurance is significantly greater than Medicaid, but the usage trends have been increasing in Medicaid. The trends of advanced fibrosis have been increasing in blacks and Asians, while they have been decreasing among whites and Mexicans. Those with AALD also had higher mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure, as well as elevated fasting glucose levels (p < 0.001). The mortality rate among AALD participants with heart diseases was 25%, compared to 3% among those without (p < 0.001). After adjusting for potential confounding variables, no statistically significant associations were found between AALD status and HF or CAD. However, a clinically significant increase in the odds of stroke was observed within the AALD group (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Our findings indicate Asians have the highest rates of AALD. The trends of advanced fibrosis have been increasing in blacks and Asians. There is an increased prevalence of AALD with heart diseases and a significant increase in mortality with stroke. The composition of the gut and/or tumor microbiome has been intricately involved in the onset of carcinogenesis, tumor progression, therapy response, and patient outcomes in diverse solid cancers. The microbiome type, composition, and their metabolome have been functionally implicated in the multifarious cellular processes, transformation, proliferation, tumor immune evasion, cellular migration, etc. Despite such compelling evidence on the role of microbiome interactions in cancer, the realization of their role in neuroblastoma (NB), the deadly extracranial tumor in infants is few and fragmentary. This review comprehends the composition, diversity, and significance of microbiota in human health. Further, this review discusses the microbiota composition, their mode of action, and their signaling flow through and cellular processes in diverse cancers including NB. Precisely, this study for the first time has realized the functional relevance and clinical significance of the gut and tumor microbiome for NB. Interestingly, large cohort clinical and preclinical in vivo models of NB realized the following: gut microbiota predicts the risk for NB; postnatal (and or not maternal transmission) microbiome rearrangements; gut microbial effect on NB pathogenesis; tumor-altering gut microbial composition; microbial composition predicts treatment outcomes in NB; prebiotic remedies for stabilizing NB-associated microbial rearrangements; microbial composition in tumor-infiltrating microbiota predicts NB outcomes. Obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and steatohepatitis associated with metabolic dysfunction (MASLD) are on the rise and pose serious health challenges worldwide. In recent years, researchers have gained a better understanding of the important role of the gut microbiota in the development and progression of these diseases. Intestinal dysbiosis can contribute to the occurrence of increased intestinal permeability, inflammation and reduced numbers of commensal bacteria. In obesity, these changes contribute to chronic low-grade inflammation and deregulated metabolism. In MASLD, gut microbiota dysbiosis can promote liver fibrosis and impair bile acid metabolism, while in T2DM, they are associated with impaired glycemic control and insulin resistance. Regular physical activity has a positive effect on the composition of the gut microbiota, increasing its diversity, modulating its metabolic functions, strengthening the intestinal barrier and reducing inflammation. These findings suggest that exercise and microbiota-targeted interventions may play an important role in the prevention and treatment of metabolic diseases. Full article

The extract of powdered raspberry pomace was characterized in terms of its phenolic profile and antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. Kuromanin, chlorogenic acid, protocatechuic acid, and pelargonidin-3-O-glucoside were found to be the major phenolic compounds, while the antioxidant activity of the extract correlated positively with the total phenolic content (TPC), which was 472.9 ± 0.1 mg GAE/g dw. The extract also showed good antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive foodborne bacteria. More importantly, in vitro bioaccessibility of phenols from the raspberry pomace extract was 5-fold higher when the extract was incorporated into meringue cookies. Although the concentrations of anthocyanins, flavonoids, and tannins decreased after the oral, gastric, and intestinal phases of digestion, the TPC slightly increased as the compounds were released from the food matrix. The content of available phenolics was 4-fold lower in the case of a commercial raspberry colorant, demonstrating that the waste from raspberry pomace could serve as a valuable health-promoting ingredient for functional food formulations. This paper introduces a framework for practitioners and researchers developing health communication messages in support of a syndemic approach to HIV care for PWH in the United States. Grounded in insights from a review of counseling and psychosocial interventions that demonstrated significant positive effects on HIV clinical outcomes, the C4H Framework emphasizes four components: compassion, comprehensive messaging, capacity-building, and coordination. Compassion ensures that messages resonate with individuals experiencing the intertwined challenges of HIV, substance abuse, and mental health issues. Comprehensive messaging integrates a holistic view of the barriers faced by PWH. Capacity-building empowers individuals to effectively engage with and act upon health information. Coordination promotes alignment between stakeholders and resources to ensure consistent and supportive messaging. The C4H Framework bridges the gap between research and practice, offering a foundation for crafting effective communication messages that resonate with individuals facing the complex challenges inherent in HIV syndemics. Future research should explicitly test the effectiveness and acceptability of messages developed using the C4H Framework with people living with HIV. Full article

Refugees experience disproportionately high rates of sleep disturbances due to trauma, displacement, and resettlement stressors. Sleep health is critically linked to both physical and mental well-being, yet remains an underexplored area of intervention for refugee populations. This systematic review aimed to (1) identify interventions implemented to improve sleep health among refugees, (2) assess their effectiveness, and (3) evaluate the extent of cultural adaptation in their design and implementation. A comprehensive search of peer-reviewed literature from 2004 to 2024 identified nine studies focused on adult refugees in high-income countries. Interventions included psychoeducation, music-assisted relaxation, guided imagery, and nightmare-focused therapies. Several demonstrated improvements in sleep quality, insomnia severity, and nightmare frequency. Music-based interventions and sleep health education stood out as accessible, non-stigmatizing strategies that may be particularly well suited to refugee contexts. However, cultural adaptation emerged as the most significant gap. Using the 4-Domain Cultural Adaptation Model (CAM4)—which assesses adaptation across context, content, delivery, and engagement—most studies showed only surface-level modifications. Few incorporated community voices, and none validated sleep assessment tools for cultural relevance. Future research should prioritize co-creation with refugee communities to ensure interventions are not only evidence-based, but also culturally grounded, trusted, and sustainable across diverse refugee populations. This study assessed whether COVID-19 pandemic experiences were associated with excessive alcohol use during the first year of the pandemic in Iowa, a heavy-drinking midwestern US state. We analyzed survey data from 4047 adult residents of Iowa collected in August 2020, focusing on three pandemic-related stressors (e.g., emotional reactions to the pandemic; disruption of daily activities; and financial hardship) and salient social support. Using multiple logistic regression, we tested correlates of increased drinking, heavy drinking, and binge drinking, controlling for demographic characteristics and health status. We found that nearly half (47.6%) of respondents did not change their drinking compared to before the pandemic; however, 12.4% of respondents reported increasing their drinking and 5.3% reported decreasing their drinking. Emotional reactions to the pandemic and disruption of daily activities were associated with higher odds of increased drinking, and rurality was associated with lower odds of increased drinking. No pandemic-related stressor was associated with heavy or binge drinking, but social support was associated with lower odds of binge drinking. Thus, we concluded that some pandemic-related stressors may explain increased drinking but not heavy or binge drinking. Understanding the nuances of alcohol use can inform preventive interventions, policy decisions, and preparations for future catastrophic events. Full article

Prevalence, Causes, and Risk Factors of Visual Impairment: Evidence from Duhknah, a Rural Community in Saudi Arabia

Background: Visual impairment (VI) continues to be a significant global public health concern, especially in underserved rural communities. Objectives: This study aims to assess the prevalence of VI and refractive errors, as well as to identify the causes and risk factors associated with VI in Duhknah, a rural area in Qassim Province, Saudi Arabia. Methods: This cross-sectional study, conducted in May 2024, included 929 participants aged 6–90 years from Duhknah, a rural area in Qassim Province, Saudi Arabia. Refractive errors (REs) were measured using a non-cycloplegic autorefractometer. Anterior and posterior eye examinations were performed using slit lamp biomicroscopy, direct ophthalmoscopy, and 90 D fundus biomicroscopy. VI was classified based on the International Classification of Diseases 11th revision (ICD-11), 2018. Results: The findings revealed that 671 (72.2%) participants had never undergone an eye examination. The overall prevalence of presenting VI was 370 (39.8%), comprising 21.6% with mild VI, 11.0% moderate, 4.1% severe, and 3.1% classified as blind. The prevalence of hyperopia, myopia, and astigmatism was 20.6%, 36.9%, and 13.2%, respectively. Uncorrected REs were the most common cause of VI (81.4%), followed by amblyopia (13.5%) and cataracts (3.2%). Regression analysis showed that women had 1.58 times higher odds of VI (p = 0.001). Participants with eye examinations for one year or more had 3.64 times higher odds (p < 0.001). Additionally, the risk of VI was significantly lower among older participants (ages 18–90) compared to younger ones (ages 6–17), (p < 0.001). Conclusions: This study found most participants had never had an eye exam, and VI was highly prevalent in the rural community. These findings underscore the need to strengthen primary eye care in rural Saudi Arabia. Regular vision screening, particularly for children, and better access to refractive services could significantly reduce VI and support the goals of Saudi Vision 2030. Full article
