Coinfections with hepatitis C virus (HCV) or human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among individuals with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) are associated with worse clinical outcomes but remain understudied due to their low prevalence and the sensitivity of associated data. This nationwide, cross-sectional study utilized claims data from the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (2014–2021) to investigate the prevalence, comorbidities, treatment patterns, and liver-related complications among patients with HBV monoinfection, HBV/HIV, HBV/HCV, or triple coinfection. Among over 4.5 million patients with chronic hepatitis B, the prevalence of HIV and HCV coinfection ranged from 0.05 to 0.07% and 0.77 to 1.00%, respectively. Patients with HBV/HCV coinfection were older and had significantly higher rates of hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and major adverse liver outcomes, including hepatocellular carcinoma and liver transplantation, compared to other groups. HBV/HIV coinfection was more common in younger males and was associated with higher dyslipidemia. The use of HBV antivirals increased over time across all groups. These findings highlight the distinct clinical characteristics and unmet needs of coinfected populations, underscoring the importance of tailored screening and management strategies in HBV-endemic settings. Background: Motor competence (MC) plays a critical role in shaping children’s physical activity, health-related fitness, and weight status. However, few studies have explored these interrelationships during middle childhood. Objectives: The current study aimed to examine the relationships between MC and physical activity (PA), health-related fitness (HRF), and weight status (WS) in children during middle childhood (9–10 years). Simultaneously, the study aimed to find possible differences in PA, HRF, and WS between children with different levels of MC. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, the TGMD-2 (MC), UNIFITTEST 6–60 (HRF), ActiGraph GT3X (PA), and anthropometry (WS) were administered to 86 children (59 boys, age range of 9–10 years and mean age of 10.1 ± 0.6 years). Results: A significant strong association was observed between MC and HRF (p < 0.01, Cramer‘s V = 0.42). Significant moderate associations were observed between MC and WS (p < 0.05, Cramer’s V = 0.34) and between MC and PA (p < 0.05, Cramer‘s V = 0.25). Children with high MC proficiency demonstrated significantly higher levels of HRF (p < 0.01; large ES) and PA (p < 0.05; moderate ES) and a healthier WS (p < 0.01; moderate ES) than those with low MC proficiency. Similarly, children with moderate MC proficiency outperformed children with low MC in terms of HRF and WS. Conclusions: The strong associations between MC and key health indicators such as PA, HRF, and WS suggest that movement proficiency in middle childhood should be viewed as a cornerstone of health promotion. Although no causal claims can be made, the results emphasize the practical importance of integrating targeted motor skill development—especially FMSs—into school-based physical education and extracurricular programs. Supporting MC at this age may be a decisive step toward fostering long-term engagement in physical activity and improving children’s overall health trajectories. Full article

Workplace contextual emotions are structured ways of emotionally thinking about specific cues in the context that employees share within their organization. These dynamics reflect how employees emotionally interpret and respond to organizational environments. Contextual emotions may shape working relationships into different types of toxic emotional dynamics (e.g., claiming, controlling, distrusting, provoking) or, conversely, positive emotional dynamics (i.e., exchanging), thus setting the emotional tone that affects employees’ actions and their level of comfort/discomfort. The present study uses latent profile analysis (LPA) to identify subpopulations of employees who may experience differing levels of both positive and negative emotional dynamics (i.e., different configurations of emotional patterns of workplace behavior). Moreover, it examines whether the emergent profiles predict work-related (i.e., job satisfaction, burnout) and health-related outcomes (i.e., sleep disturbances, physical and mental health). Using data from 801 Italian employees, we identified four latent profiles: “functional dynamics” (low toxic emotions and high exchange), “dialectical dynamics” (co-existence of medium toxic emotions and medium exchange), “mild dysfunctional dynamics” (moderately high toxic emotions and low exchange), and “highly dysfunctional dynamics” (extremely high toxic emotions and extremely low exchange). Moreover, employees in the dialectical, mild dysfunctional, and highly dysfunctional groups reported progressively higher levels of poor health outcomes and progressively lower levels of satisfaction, whereas the functional group was at low risk of stress and was the most satisfied group. The theoretical and practical implications of the LPA-classified emotional patterns of workplace behavior are discussed in light of the relevance of identifying vulnerable subpopulations of employees diversely exposed to toxic configurations of emotional/relational ambience. Background/Objectives: Children with sickle cell disease (SCD) often experience limited access to care, contributing to poor health outcomes. Patient-level predictors and outcomes associated with telehealth use among Medicaid-enrolled children with SCD remain unknown. This study aims to (1) analyze telehealth trends before and during the pandemic (March 2020–March 2022), (2) identify patient-level predictors of telehealth use, (3) assess its association with care continuity and health outcomes, and (4) identify physician specialties involved in telehealth visits. Methods: Using Texas Medicaid claims (March 2017–March 2022), we conducted a retrospective analysis of children aged 1–18 with ≥3 SCD-related claims. Monthly trends in outpatient visits (in-person and telehealth) were visualized from March 2019 to March 2022. Multivariable regression models examined predictors of telehealth use and associations with ≥10 hydroxyurea fills, emergency department (ED) visits, and hospitalizations, adjusting for age, sex, regions with SCD clinics, and prior healthcare utilization. Results: Among 903 included patients (mean [SD] age = 10.4 [4.1], 52.6% male), 59.4% had ≥1 telehealth visits between March 2019 and March 2022. Telehealth use peaked between March 2020 and May 2020, then gradually declined. Children with ≥10 SCD-related outpatient visits 1 year before the lockdown (March 2019–February 2020) had 77.4% higher odds of using telehealth compared to those with 0–4 visits (OR = 1.774, 95% CI = 1.281–2.457, p = 0.0006), while controlling for sociodemographic characteristics. However, SCD-related telehealth use during the pandemic was not associated with either ≥10 hydroxyurea fills or reduced ED visits. Prior healthcare utilization remained a strong predictor of both outcomes. The majority of telehealth visits were conducted at multispecialty clinics (74%). Conclusions: Telehealth use surged early in the pandemic but later declined among Texas Medicaid-enrolled children with SCD. Children with high healthcare needs adopted telehealth, but this did not impact care continuity or extensive healthcare utilization. While maintaining telehealth access, other measures should be implemented to improve access and outcomes for this vulnerable population. Full article

Lyssaviruses are RNA viruses in the Family Rhabdoviridae, Genus Lyssavirus. They represent the causative agents of acute, progressive encephalitis, known historically as rabies. Regardless of specific etiology, their collective viral morphology, biochemistry, pathobiology, associated clinical signs, diagnosis, epizootiology, and management are essentially the same. Despite centuries of clinical recognition, these quintessential neurotropic agents remain significant pathogens today, with substantive consequences to agriculture, public health, and conservation biology. Notably, the singular morbidity caused by lyssaviruses is incurable and constitutes the highest case fatality of any viral disease. All warm-blooded vertebrates are believed to be susceptible. The dog is the only domestic animal that serves as a reservoir, vector, and victim. In contrast, felids are effective vectors, but not reservoirs. All other rabid domestic species, such as livestock, constitute spillover infections, as a bellwether to local lyssavirus activity. Frequently, professional confusion abounds among the veterinary community, because although the viral species Lyssavirus rabies is inarguably the best-known representative in the Genus, at least 20 other recognized or putative members of this monophyletic group are known. Frequently, this is simply overlooked. Moreover, often the ‘taxonomic etiology’ (i.e., ‘Lyssavirus x’) is mistakenly referenced in a biopolitcal context, instead of the obvious clinical illness (i.e., ‘rabies’). Global consternation persists, if localities believe they are ‘disease-free’, when documented lyssaviruses circulate or laboratory-based surveillance is inadequate to support such claims. Understandably, professional chagrin develops when individuals mistake the epidemiological terminology of control, prevention, elimination, etc. Management is not simple, given that the only licensed veterinary and human vaccines are against rabies virus, sensu lato. There are no adequate antiviral drugs for any lyssaviruses or cross-reactive biologics developed against more distantly related viral members. While representative taxa among the mammalian Orders Chiroptera, Carnivora, and Primates exemplify the major global reservoirs, which mammalian species are responsible for the perpetuation of other lyssaviruses remains a seemingly academic curiosity. This zoonosis is neglected. Clearly, with such underlying characteristics as a fundamental ‘disease of nature’, rabies, unlike smallpox and rinderpest, is not a candidate for eradication. With the worldwide zeal to drive human fatalities from canine rabies viruses to zero by the rapidly approaching year 2030, enhanced surveillance and greater introspection of the poorly appreciated burden posed by rabies virus and diverse other lyssaviruses may manifest as an epidemiological luxury to the overall global program of the future. Background: Protein supplements are among the most popular, available and growing complementary products. Fraud related to the mislabeling, inaccurate analysis or declaration of ingredient quantities, and health claims not aligned with those approved by EFSA is high. This study aims to analyze the claims related to protein supplements in commercial messages. Methods: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted to analyze the content and the degree to which health claims stated on the labeling or technical data sheets of protein supplements comply with those authorized by current European legislation and supported by existing scientific evidence. The products were searched for using Amazon and Google Shopping. Results: Of the 209 health claims evaluated, 60 claims fully complied with the recommendations, representing 28.7% of the total (n = 209). In contrast, 12 claims in which the stated text did not conform to the health claims established by EFSA were identified, representing 5.7% of the total (n = 209). The most widely used unauthorized health claims on the market are those referring to “Post-workout recovery” (11.1%), followed by “Promotes muscle recovery (casein)” (9.5% each), referring to whey protein and casein, respectively. Of all the products analyzed in the study, 43.8% (n = 46) of the products made health claims not authorized by the EFSA. Conclusions: These findings suggest that the high-quality advertising of protein supplements should engage consumers, industry stakeholders, scientific research, and the European Food Safety Authority to ensure compliance with European regulations, provide accurate guidance for manufacturers, and protect consumer rights under current legislation. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Japan has experienced a significant rise in mortality, with excess deaths surpassing historical projections. Statistical data indicate a sharp increase in mortality rates from 2021 onward, attributed to COVID-19, aging demographics, cardiovascular diseases, and malignancies. Preliminary 2024 data suggest continued excess mortality, fueling public debate. This review analyzes national and municipal mortality trends using official Japanese statistics and comparative data from South Korea, the U.S., and the EU. Findings reveal a sharp mortality rise post-2021 in Japan and South Korea, while Western nations experienced peak deaths in 2020, followed by declines. The review explores contributing factors, including potential vaccine-related adverse effects, declining healthcare access, pandemic-induced stress, and demographic shifts. Notably, older adults’ reluctance to seek medical care led to delayed diagnoses, treatment interruptions, and preventable deaths. Although some argue that declining COVID-19 vaccination rates in 2023 may have contributed to rising mortality in 2024, available data suggest a multifactorial causation. Japan’s rapidly aging population, coupled with increasing mortality and declining birth rates, presents profound social and economic challenges. A nuanced approach, avoiding simplistic causal claims, is crucial for understanding these trends. This review highlights the need for a sustainable societal framework to address demographic shifts and improve healthcare resilience. Future pandemic strategies must balance infection control measures with mitigating unintended health consequences to ensure a more adaptive and effective public health response. Full article

The Nutrition and Health Claims Regulation (NHCR) has introduced a new regulatory perspective in food manufacturing, along with influencing consumers’ perception of health-related food claims. Since 2006, a new standard of science-based claims has significantly impacted the European health food market. Over the years, numerous additional decisions have been made, and the ongoing process remains challenging for policymakers striving to harmonize consumer protection and trade within and outside the European Union (EU). This paper presents the current state of the NHCR’s implementation, along with key events aimed at enhancing understanding among consumer organizations and food industry stakeholders, while also offering an insider perspective on relevant policy issues. Additionally, we address two pertinent policy issues to elucidate the associated challenges and opportunities, providing insights to support informed decision-making by policymakers. We use the nutrient profiles framework as a case study to illustrate considerations underpinning the objective of “consumer protection”, while the “probiotics” market serves as an example for exploring the goal of “facilitation of trade”. This historical perspective and reflection lead us to propose possible solutions for future food regulation. Full article

Consumers tend to favor natural dietary supplements to improve their health. However, vendors rarely cite scientific evidence to justify these claims. In the case of poppy oil, it is often mentioned as having a positive effect on Ca metabolism-related disorders, but no proof has been provided. Therefore, the aim of our trial was to test the possible effect of poppy oil on calcium metabolism using Japanese quail layers as a model animal. A total of 120 four-week-old quail were divided into three dietary treatments (four cages per treatment, with ten birds in each cage): a control group (using sunflower oil as the energy source in the diet), 0.5%, and 1% poppy oil supplementation (replacing sunflower oil). Egg production, eggshell thickness, eggshell strength, and egg yolk color were investigated. Ca retention was determined using the acid-insoluble ash method. At the end of the experiment, two birds per cage were sacrificed, and uterus and jejunum samples were collected for gene expression analyses. Poppy oil supplementation improved egg production in terms of intensity, egg weight, and eggmass production. The thickness and eggshell strength decreased when 1% poppy oil was fed to the animals, while Ca retention improved. Poppy oil supplementation increased the expression of Ca transporter genes (CALB1, SLC8A1, and SLC26A9) in the uterus and ITPR1 in the jejunum. Our results indicate a possible effect of poppy oil on Ca metabolism. Further studies are needed to identify the active compound and to understand the mode of action. Full article

Scientific disinformation has emerged as a critical challenge at the interface of science and society. This paper examines how false or misleading scientific content proliferates across both social media and traditional media and evaluates strategies to counteract its spread. We conducted a comprehensive literature review of research on scientific misinformation across disciplines and regions, with particular focus on climate change and public health as exemplars. Our findings indicate that social media algorithms and user dynamics can amplify false scientific claims, as seen in case studies of viral misinformation campaigns on vaccines and climate change. Traditional media, meanwhile, are not immune to spreading inaccuracies—journalistic practices such as sensationalism or “false balance” in reporting have at times distorted scientific facts, impacting public understanding. We review efforts to fight disinformation, including technological tools for detection, the application of inoculation theory and prebunking techniques, and collaborative approaches that bridge scientists and journalists. To empower individuals, we propose practical guidelines for critically evaluating scientific information sources and emphasize the importance of digital and scientific literacy. Finally, we discuss methods to quantify the prevalence and impact of scientific disinformation—ranging from social network analysis to surveys of public belief—and compare trends across regions and scientific domains. Our results underscore that combating scientific disinformation requires an interdisciplinary, multi-pronged approach, combining improvements in science communication, education, and policy. We conducted a scoping review of 85 open-access studies focused on climate-related misinformation and disinformation, selected through a systematic screening process based on PRISMA criteria. This approach was chosen to address the lack of comprehensive mappings that synthesize key themes and identify research gaps in this fast-growing field. The analysis classified the literature into 17 thematic clusters, highlighting key trends, gaps, and emerging challenges in the field. Our results reveal a strong dominance of studies centered on social media amplification, political denialism, and cognitive inoculation strategies, while underlining a lack of research on fact-checking mechanisms and non-Western contexts. We conclude with recommendations for strengthening the resilience of both the public and information ecosystems against the spread of false scientific claims. Full article

Background/Objectives: Health and nutrition are increasingly important to people, which has increased the popularity of products promoted for their contribution to health, such as food supplements. Methods: This study encompassed 87 herbal food supplements, assessing the compliance of health claims with regulatory requirements. The study was conducted in Serbia, a European country with a regulatory framework harmonized with the one in the EU; however, it requires the pre-market registration of supplements. Results: Health claims were listed on as many as 86.2% of the labels, but only 10.7% of them, all associated with vitamin and mineral ingredients, were compliant with the EU Register of authorized health claims. An additional 38.7% of supplements carried “on-hold” claims from the EFSA Register of questions for botanicals. The remaining ones (50.6%) comprised those attributed with strictly prohibited properties of disease prevention, treatment, or cure (9.3%), and those containing at least one botanical-related health claim out of the scope of the Register of questions. Conclusions: The study unequivocally showed the worrying lack of adherence to regulations in the Serbian settings. Considering the importance of labelling for consumer protection and public health, the authors of this paper advocate for significant improvement in quality assurance of the registration process, tightening of market control, and an effective solution for on-hold claims on botanicals continuously used under transitional regulatory measures. Background/Objectives: This article addresses the challenge of stress detection across diverse contexts. Mental stress is a worldwide concern that substantially affects human health and productivity, rendering it a critical research challenge. Although numerous studies have investigated stress detection through machine learning (ML) techniques, there has been limited research on assessing ML models trained in one context and utilized in another. The objective of ML-based stress detection systems is to create models that generalize across various contexts. Methods: This study examines the generalizability of ML models employing EEG recordings from two stress-inducing contexts: mental arithmetic evaluation (MAE) and virtual reality (VR) gaming. We present a data collection workflow and publicly release a portion of the dataset. Furthermore, we evaluate classical ML models and their generalizability, offering insights into the influence of training data on model performance, data efficiency, and related expenses. EEG data were acquired leveraging MUSE-STM hardware during stressful MAE and VR gaming scenarios. The methodology entailed preprocessing EEG signals using wavelet denoising mother wavelets, assessing individual and aggregated sensor data, and employing three ML models—linear discriminant analysis (LDA), support vector machine (SVM), and K-nearest neighbors (KNN)—for classification purposes. Results: In Scenario 1, where MAE was employed for training and VR for testing, the TP10 electrode attained an average accuracy of 91.42% across all classifiers and participants, whereas the SVM classifier achieved the highest average accuracy of 95.76% across all participants. In Scenario 2, adopting VR data as the training data and MAE data as the testing data, the maximum average accuracy achieved was 88.05% with the combination of TP10, AF8, and TP9 electrodes across all classifiers and participants, whereas the LDA model attained the peak average accuracy of 90.27% among all participants. The optimal performance was achieved with Symlets 4 and Daubechies-2 for Scenarios 1 and 2, respectively. Conclusions: The results demonstrate that although ML models exhibit generalization capabilities across stressors, their performance is significantly influenced by the alignment between training and testing contexts, as evidenced by systematic cross-context evaluations using an 80/20 train–test split per participant and quantitative metrics (accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score) averaged across participants. The observed variations in performance across stress scenarios, classifiers, and EEG sensors provide empirical support for this claim. Full article

Background: Previous reports suggest a connection between gout and asthma; however, additional research is required to clarify this link. This study explores the relationship between gout and asthma using data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening Cohort. Methods: Participants were selected according to medical claim codes, and individuals diagnosed with gout were paired with control subjects at a 1:4 ratio. Variables, including demographic characteristics, health-related information, and medical history, were incorporated into the analysis. The incidence rates and hazard ratios of asthma were examined. Additionally, a comprehensive analysis was conducted to investigate the relationship between gout and asthma exacerbation. Results: Among the 514,866 participants, 19,830 patients with gout and 79,320 matched controls were analyzed. After adjusting for variables, the gout group demonstrated a significantly higher risk of asthma compared with the control group (adjusted hazard ratio [HR], 1.11, p < 0.001). Compared with the control group, the Kaplan–Meier method and log-rank test revealed a statistically significant increase in the cumulative incidence of asthma in the gout group over a 17-year period. However, the gout group did not show a significantly higher hazard ratio for asthma exacerbation. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that gout was associated with an increased risk of asthma. Additional analysis showed that gout was not correlated with asthma exacerbation. Further research is needed to fully elucidate the association between gout and asthma. Full article

The current study examines the impact of health claims on consumer preferences and willingness to pay (WTP) for functional snack bars, focusing on anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Through an experimental auction involving 175 participants, this study investigates how providing clear information on product health benefits influences consumer interest and WTP while analysing the role of individual health consciousness (HC) in shaping these preferences. The results indicate that detailed health claims positively affect consumer WTP for functional snack bars compared to standard options. Although both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant claims attract consumer interest, no significant difference in WTP was observed between the two, suggesting similar perceived value for these distinct benefits. However, highly health-conscious consumers demonstrate a stronger preference and WTP for anti-inflammatory options, indicating that HC influences specific health claim valuation. These findings underscore the importance of effective health-related messaging in promoting functional foods and suggest that general health claims may resonate more broadly with consumers than specialised ones. This study’s results enhance the current knowledge on functional foods, especially snack bars, offering valuable insights for manufacturers aiming to implement targeted marketing strategies and public health initiatives focused on promoting healthier dietary choices. Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and multiple sclerosis (MS), which are a consequence of the progressive loss of neuronal function and structure, cause significant cognitive impairment. The incidence of these diseases in the world’s population is constantly increasing as a result of an aging population. Although genetic and environmental factors are most often mentioned as the pathogenetic factors of these diseases, increasing evidence points to the important role of proper nutrition in the prevention and support of the treatment of these disorders. A healthy, balanced diet can mitigate the risks associated with the risk factors mentioned above and slow the progression of the disease by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation. Vitamins B, D, E, C, K, and A have been shown to support cognitive functions and protect the nervous system. This review demonstrates the importance of vitamins in preventing and supporting the therapy of neurodegenerative diseases. Information regarding the health-promoting properties of these vitamins must be effectively communicated to consumers seeking to protect their health, particularly in the context of neurodegenerative diseases. Consequently, this review also examines the authorized health claims under EU food law related to these vitamins, assessing their role in promoting awareness of the vitamins’ potential benefits for neuroprotection and the management of neurodegenerative diseases.
