Dam monitoring tracks environmental variables (water level, temperature) and structural responses (deformation, seepage, and stress) to assess safety and performance. Structural health monitoring (SHM) refers to the systematic observation and analysis of the structural condition over time, and it is essential in maintaining the safety, functionality, and long-term performance of dams. This review examines monitoring data applications, covering structural health assessment methods, historical motivations, and key challenges. It discusses monitoring components, data acquisition processes, and sensor roles, stressing the need to integrate environmental, operational, and structural data for decision making. Key objectives include risk management, operational efficiency, safety evaluation, environmental impact assessment, and maintenance planning. Methodologies such as numerical modeling, statistical analysis, and machine learning are critically analyzed, highlighting their strengths and limitations and the demand for advanced predictive techniques. First Survey on the Seroprevalence of Coxiella burnetii in Positive Human Patients from 2015 to 2024 in Sardinia, Italy

Coxiella burnetii, the etiological agent of Q fever, is a globally distributed zoonotic pathogen affecting both animals and humans. Despite its known endemicity in various Mediterranean regions, data on human seroprevalence in Sardinia are still lacking. This study aimed to assess seroprevalence in patients and to analyze the annual positivity rate related to the serum samples collected in Sardinia over a ten-year period (2015–2024). For this purpose, a total of 1792 patients were involved in the survey, and 4310 serum samples were analyzed using indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFI) to detect IgM and IgG antibodies against C. burnetii. The global seroprevalence rates relating to all the patients over a ten-year period were determined along with the annual positivity rate and trends from all sera. An overall seroprevalence of 27.0% and an average of annual positivity rate of 16.0% were determined, with the IFI detecting IgG antibodies in 15.2% of positive samples and IgM antibodies in 0.9%, suggesting significant prior exposure of the population evaluated. Annual positivity rates ranged from 24.8% in 2016 to 8.0% in 2020. These results confirmed the endemic circulation of C. burnetii in Sardinia and the ongoing risk of human exposure. A GIS-based map was built to evidence the spatial distribution of Q fever in Sardinia. Interestingly, areas with higher seroprevalence appear to coincide with the distribution of sheep and goat farms, indicating a link between livestock and human exposure. These findings confirm the circulation of C. burnetii in Sardinia and underscore the importance of epidemiological monitoring, public health interventions, and educational efforts in populations at increased risk. Ecological security evaluation serves as the cornerstone for ecological management decision-making and spatial optimization. This study focuses on the Dongping Lake Basin. Based on the Pressure–State–Response (PSR) model framework, it integrates ecological risk, ecosystem health, and ecosystem service indicators. Utilizing methods including Local Indicators of Spatial Association (LISA), Transition Matrix, and GeoDetector, it analyzes the spatio-temporal evolution characteristics and driving mechanisms of watershed ecological security from 2000 to 2020. The findings reveal that the Watershed Ecological Security Index (WESI) exhibited a trend of “fluctuating upward followed by periodic decline”. In 2000, the status was “relatively unsafe”. It peaked in 2015 (index 0.332, moderately safe) and experienced a slight decline by 2020. Spatially, a significantly clustered pattern of “higher in the north and lower in the south, higher in the east and lower in the west” was observed. In 2020, “High-High” clusters of ecological security aligned closely with Shandong Province’s ecological conservation red line, concentrating in core protected areas such as the foothills of the Taihang Mountains and Dongping Lake Wetland. Level transitions were characterized by “predominant continuous improvement in low levels alongside localized reverse fluctuations in middle and high levels,” with the “relatively unsafe” and “moderately safe” levels experiencing the largest transfer areas. Geographical detector analysis indicates that the Human Interference Index (HI), Ecosystem Service Value (ESV), and Annual Afforestation Area (AAA) were key drivers of watershed ecological security change, influenced by dynamic interactive effects among multiple factors. This study advances watershed-scale ecological security assessment methodologies. The revealed spatio-temporal patterns and driving mechanisms provide valuable insights for protecting the ecological barrier in the lower Yellow River and informing ecological security strategies within the Dongping Lake Watershed. Background: Super morbid obesity (SMO), defined as a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 50 kg/m2, represents a distinct and increasingly prevalent subgroup of patients undergoing bariatric surgery. Compared to individuals with lower BMI, patients with BMI ≥ 50 kg/m2 often exhibit unique clinical, psychological, and social characteristics that may influence treatment outcomes. Objective: This study aimed to compare demographic, metabolic, and psychiatric profiles of patients with BMI ≥ 50 kg/m2 and non-super morbid obesity (NSMO; BMI < 50 kg/m2) who were evaluated prior to bariatric surgery. Methods: A total of 319 patients were recruited between December 2022 and December 2023 at a bariatric center in Gdansk, Poland. All participants underwent a comprehensive preoperative assessment, including laboratory testing, psychometric screening (BDI, PHQ-9), and psychiatric interviews. Patients were stratified into class IV obesity and NSMO groups for comparative analysis. Results: Patients with BMI ≥ 50 kg/m2 were significantly older and more likely to report a history of lifelong obesity, family history of obesity, and childhood trauma. They had higher rates of obesity-related health problems such as hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea, and chronic venous insufficiency, as well as worse liver function and lipid profiles. Although the overall psychiatric burden was high in both groups, patients with BMI ≥ 50 kg/m2 reported fewer prior diagnoses of depression and eating disorders, despite similar scores on screening tools. Conclusions: Patients with BMI ≥ 50 kg/m2 represent a clinically distinct population with elevated metabolic risk, complex psychosocial backgrounds, and possibly underrecognized psychiatric burden. These findings underscore the need for multidisciplinary preoperative assessment and individualized treatment strategies in this group of patients. Full article

The increasing shortage of drinking water, driven by reduced rainfall and the intensification of industrial and agricultural activities, has raised justified concerns about the quantity and quality of available water resources. These sectors not only demand high water consumption but also discharge large amounts of toxic substances such as organic matter, metal ions and inorganic anions, posing risks to both public health and the environment. This study evaluated the effectiveness of clay-based nanomaterials in the treatment of contaminated industrial wastewater from the mining sector. The materials tested included montmorillonite, high-loading expandable synthetic mica, and their organically functionalized forms (MMT, Mica-Na-4, C18-MMT, and C18-Mica-4). The experimental results show that these clays had minimal impact on the pH of the water, while a notable decrease in the chemical oxygen demand (COD) was observed. Ion chromatography indicated an increase in nitrogen and sulfur compounds with higher oxidation states. Inductively coupled plasma analysis revealed a significant reduction in the calcium concentration and an increase in the sodium concentration, likely due to cation exchange mechanisms. However, the removal of copper and iron was ineffective, possibly due to competitive interactions with other cations in the solution. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the structural modifications and interlayer spacing changes in the clay materials upon exposure to contaminated water. These findings demonstrate the potential of clay minerals as effective and low-cost materials for the remediation of industrial wastewater. Full article

This study presents an approach based on machine learning (ML) techniques to analyze the relationship between emergency room (ER) admissions for cardiorespiratory diseases (CRDs) and environmental factors. The aim of this study is the development and verification of an interpretable machine learning framework applied to environmental and health data to assess the relationship between environmental factors and daily emergency room admissions for cardiorespiratory diseases. The model’s predictive accuracy was evaluated by comparing simulated values with observed historical data, thereby identifying the most influential environmental variables and critical exposure thresholds. This approach supports public health surveillance and healthcare resource management optimization. The health and environmental data, collected through meteorological sensors and air quality monitoring stations, cover eleven years (2013–2023), including meteorological conditions and atmospheric pollutants. Four ML models were compared, with XGBoost showing the best predictive performance (R2 = 0.901; MAE = 0.047). A 10-fold cross-validation was applied to improve reliability. Global model interpretability was assessed using SHAP, which highlighted that high levels of carbon monoxide and relative humidity, low atmospheric pressure, and mild temperatures are associated with an increase in CRD cases. The local analysis was further refined using LIME, whose application—followed by experimental verification—allowed for the identification of the critical thresholds beyond which a significant increase in the risk of hospital admission (above the 95th percentile) was observed: CO > 0.84 mg/m3, P_atm ≤ 1006.81 hPa, Tavg ≤ 17.19 °C, and RH > 70.33%. The findings emphasize the potential of interpretable ML models as tools for both epidemiological analysis and prevention support, offering a valuable framework for integrating environmental surveillance with healthcare planning. Background: Undercover police work is a psychologically high-risk profession that exposes officers to chronic stress, identity conflicts, and moral dilemmas. The aim of the present review is to evaluate the psychological consequences associated with undercover police work, focusing on specific psychopathological risk factors. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and Scopus databases. Studies were conducted in the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Canada. The present systematic review analyzed data from 380 current undercover operatives, 372 former UCOs, 578 officers without undercover experience, and 60 pre-operational agents. Results: From an initial pool of 365 records, 10 studies were identified, of which 6 met the inclusion criteria. The most frequently reported psychological risk factors included anxiety, hypervigilance, identity issues, dissociative symptoms, and substance misuse. These were assessed using validated self-report instruments (e.g., SCL-90), structured interviews, and clinical evaluations. Long-term consequences were more prominent post-deployment, particularly among former UCOs. Conclusions: Undercover work is associated with an elevated risk of mental health problems, especially after the end of operations. Future research should focus on standardizing assessment tools and identifying protective factors. The findings support the development of targeted interventions such as pre-deployment psychological screening, ongoing monitoring, and structured reintegration programs to safeguard UCOs’ well-being. Maintaining teat-end integrity in dairy cows is essential to preventing intramammary infections (IMIs) in dairy cows, yet the relationship between hyperkeratosis, teat conformation, and mammary health remais underexplored. This study evaluated the relationship between teat-end hyperkeratosis, teat conformation traits, microbial colonization, and somatic cell count (SCC) in milk from 170 cows on ten commercial dairy farms in Santa Catarina, Brazil. During two farm visits, milk and teat-end swab samples from paired teats (one with hyperkeratosis, one without) were analyzed for microbial growth and SCC. SCC data were transformed into somatic cell scores (SCS). Results showed no significant association between hyperkeratosis and mastitis microorganisms, although environmental microorganisms tended to be more frequent in hyperkeratotic teats (p = 0.0778). Major microorganisms in milk were significantly associated with higher SCC (p = 0.0132). No relationship was observed between teat conformation traits and hyperkeratosis. These findings suggest that hyperkeratosis may subtly influence the teat canal to environmental bacterial colonization, underscoring the need for improved milking management practices to minimize hyperkeratosis and associated mastitis risks. Background/Objectives: Adolescence is a critical period for the early detection of metabolic syndrome (MetS), a condition that increases the risk of cardiometabolic diseases in adulthood. Timely identification of at-risk adolescents enables targeted prevention strategies. This study aimed to analyze the discriminative capacity and accuracy of six biochemical and/or anthropometric indices related to lipid metabolism and adiposity for the early detection of MetS in a sample of Spanish adolescents. Methods: A cross-sectional study carried out according to the STROBE guidelines. A sample of 981 adolescents aged 11–16 years old were randomly recruited from schools in Southeastern Spain. The presence or absence of MetS was determined according to the International Diabetes Federation criteria. The following biochemical and/or anthropometric indices were evaluated: triglyceride glucose index, visceral adiposity index, logarithm children’s lipid accumulation product, triglyceride glucose-body mass index, triglyceride glucose-waist circumference, and triglyceride glucose-waist-to-hip ratio. Results: The triglyceride glucose-waist-to-hip ratio and triglyceride glucose-body mass index parameters were the strongest indicators associated with MetS in boys and girls, respectively, after adjusting for several factors. Moreover, all evaluated indices showed optimal AUC values, with the visceral adiposity index and triglyceride glucose-waist circumference index exhibiting the highest discriminative capacity in both genders. Conclusions: The evaluated biochemical and anthropometric indices—particularly visceral adiposity index and triglyceride-glucose-waist circumference—show promise as accessible biomarkers for identifying adolescents at metabolic risk. These indices may serve as practical tools in preventive health strategies aimed at improving metabolic health by screening adolescents at risk of MetS, thereby helping to reduce the future burden of non-communicable diseases. Background and Objectives: Surgical smoke generated by energy devices during surgery contains hazardous substances and poses health risks to staff in the operating room. Exposure to surgical smoke must be reduced to minimize the risk of health hazards. Many studies have evaluated surgical smoke qualitatively, but few have performed quantitative assessment. The aim of this study was to quantify the number of particles generated during various breast surgery procedures. Materials and Methods: In this prospective, randomized study, breast surgeries performed at Tokyo Medical and Dental University Hospital (the present Institute of Science Tokyo Hospital) between December 2022 and August 2023 were randomly assigned to two groups: the electrosurgical device group and the electrosurgical device with smoke evacuator group. The number of particles generated by energy devices during surgery was measured using a particle counter. Results: Surgical smoke was generated in all procedures. The number of measured particles was significantly less in the electrosurgical device with smoke evacuator group than in the electrosurgical device group during all procedures (all p < 0.001). Conclusions: All breast surgery procedures produced a significant amount of surgical smoke, which was effectively reduced by using an electrosurgical device with a smoke evacuator. These findings support the routine use of smoke evacuators in breast surgery to reduce occupational exposure to hazardous particles. Implementation of such devices could improve operating room safety and may inform future guidelines and institutional policies regarding surgical smoke management. Full article

Rabies remains a significant global public health concern, causing an estimated 59,000–69,000 human fatalities annually. Despite being entirely preventable through vaccination, rabies continues to impose substantial economic burdens worldwide. This study presents a scoping review of the economic research on rabies to determine overlaps and gaps in knowledge and inform future research strategies. We selected 150 studies (1973–2024) to analyze. The review categorizes the literature based on geographic distribution, species focus, and type of study. Findings indicate that economic studies are disproportionately concentrated in developed countries, such as the United States and parts of Europe, where rabies risk is low, while high-risk regions, particularly in Africa and Asia, remain underrepresented. Most studies focus on dog-mediated rabies, reflecting its dominant role in human transmission, while fewer studies assess the economic impacts of wildlife and livestock-mediated rabies. Case studies and modeling approaches dominate the literature, whereas cost–benefit and cost–effectiveness analyses—critical for informing resource allocation—are limited. The review highlights the need for more economic evaluations in rabies-endemic regions, expanded research on non-dog reservoirs, and broader use of economic methods. Addressing these gaps will be crucial for optimizing rabies control and supporting global initiatives to eliminate dog-mediated rabies by 2030. Full article

Background/Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate baseline health measurements among transitional housing residents (n = 29) participating in an 8-week pilot wellness intervention. Methods: Researchers measured anthropometrics, body composition, muscular strength, cardiovascular indicators, physical activity, diet quality, and health-related perceptions. Researchers analyzed data using descriptive statistics and conventional content analysis. Results: Most participants were male, White, and food insecure. Mean BMI (31.8 ± 8.6 kg/m2), waist-to-hip ratio (1.0 ± 0.1 males, 0.9 ± 0.1 females), body fat percentage (25.8 ± 6.1% males, 40.5 ± 9.4% females), blood pressure (131.8 ± 17.9/85.2 ± 13.3 mmHg), and daily step counts exceeded recommended levels. Absolute grip strength (77.1 ± 19.4 kg males, 53.0 ± 15.7 kg females) and perceived general health were below reference standards. The Healthy Eating Index-2020 score (39.7/100) indicated low diet quality. Common barriers to healthy eating were financial constraints (29.6%) and limited cooking/storage facilities (29.6%), as well as to exercise, physical impediments (14.8%). Conclusions: Residents living in transitional housing have less favorable body composition, diet, and grip strength measures, putting them at risk for negative health outcomes. Wellness interventions aimed at promoting improved health-related outcomes while addressing common barriers to proper diet and exercise among transitional housing residents are warranted. Background/Objectives: Cognitive impairment in older adults has emerged as a growing public health concern, particularly in relation to COVID-19 infection and its associated neuropsychiatric symptoms. The identification of modifiable risk factors may contribute to the development of targeted preventive strategies. This study aimed to assess predictors of cognitive impairment in older adults with and without recent SARS-CoV-2 infection. Methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted from June 2023 to March 2024 at a tertiary hospital in western Mexico. Adults aged 65 years or older with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection within the previous six months, along with uninfected controls, were enrolled. Cognitive function (Mini-Mental State Examination), depression (PHQ-9), anxiety (Geriatric Anxiety Inventory), insomnia (Insomnia Severity Index), functional status (Katz Index and Lawton–Brody Scale), and laboratory markers were evaluated at baseline, three months, and six months. The primary outcome was cognitive impairment at six months. Independent predictors were identified using a multivariable generalized linear mixed-effects model. Results: Among the 111 participants, 20 (18.8%) developed cognitive impairment within six months. Low serum magnesium (adjusted risk ratio [aRR] 2.73; 95% CI 1.04–7.17; p = 0.041) and depression (aRR 5.57; 95% CI 1.88–16.48; p = 0.002) were independently associated with a higher risk. A significant synergistic among COVID-19, depression, and hypomagnesemia was observed (RR 44.30; 95% CI 9.52–206.21; p < 0.001), corresponding to the group with simultaneous presence of all three factors compared to the group with none. Conclusions: Depression and hypomagnesemia appear to be independent predictors of cognitive impairment in older adults with recent COVID-19 infection. These findings suggest potential targets for prevention and support the implementation of routine neuropsychiatric and biochemical assessments in this population. Full article

The Amazon region is home to a remarkable diversity of plant species that are used in traditional medicine and cuisine. This study aimed to evaluate the functional, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties of the leaves of Allium schoenoprasum, Brugmansia candida (white and pink), and Cyclanthemum bipartitum. Bioactive compounds (L-ascorbic acid, organic acids, carotenoids, phenolic compounds, and chlorophylls) were quantified using liquid chromatography. The ABTS and DPPH methods were used to assess the antioxidant capacity. Additionally, the antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Streptococcus mutans, Candida albicans, and Candida tropicalis was evaluated. The results revealed a high content of L-ascorbic acid (7.6 mg/100 g dry weight) and total carotenoids (509.0 mg/100 g dry weight), as well as high antioxidant capacity (4.5 mmol TE/100 g dry weight) and broad antimicrobial activity in Brugmansia candida ‘pink’. The White variety had the highest concentration of total chlorophylls (1742.8 mg/100 g DW), Cyclanthemum bipartitum had the highest total organic acid content (2814.5 mg/100 g DW), and Allium schoenoprasum had the highest concentration of total phenolic compounds (11,351.6 mg/100 g DW). These results constitute a starting point for future research, emphasizing the potential health risks that certain species may pose. Full article

Influence of Partial Vermicompost Tea Substitution for Mineral Nitrogen Fertilizers on Yield and Nutrient Content of Wheat Cultivars

Chemical fertilizers pose significant risks to both human health and the environment. To investigate the effect of substituting nitrogen fertilizer with vermicompost tea on wheat yield, shoot chemical constituents, and grain quality under clay-loam soil conditions, two field experiments were conducted at the Faculty of Agriculture, Cairo University, Egypt, during the winter seasons of 2021–2022 and 2022–2023. A split-plot design in randomized complete blocks with three replications was employed. Vermicompost tea was assigned to the main plots, while wheat cultivars were assigned to the subplots. The cultivars were evaluated under four treatments involving partial substitution of mineral nitrogen (recommended dose of nitrogen (RDN%, 190 kg N ha−1): a control (90% of RDN + 25 kg vermicompost tea), 80% of RDN + 37.5 kg vermicompost tea, and 70% of RDN + 50 kg vermicompost tea. Nitrogen fertilizer (RDN%) was applied at rates of 190 (control), 170 (90%), 150 (80%), and 130 (70%) kg N ha−1. The results indicated that partially substituting mineral nitrogen with vermicompost tea significantly increased grain weight/Ha, chlorophyll A, chlorophyll B, carotenoids, nitrogen, phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) content in shoots, as well as ash, crude protein, crude fiber, total sugar, and N, P, and K content in wheat grains. The grain weight/Ha of the Sakha-95, Giza-171, and Sads-14 cultivars increased by 38.6%, 33.5%, and 39.3%, respectively, when treated with 70% RDN + 50 kg vermicompost tea. The combination of the Sads-14 cultivar and 70% RDN + 50 kg vermicompost tea resulted in the highest values for grain weight/ha (9.43 tons ha−1), chlorophyll A (1.39 mg/g), chlorophyll B (1.04 mg/g), N (5.08%), P (1.63%), and P (2.43%) content in shoots. The same combination also improved ash (2.89%), crude fiber (2.84%), and K (6.05%) content in grains. In conclusion, the application of vermicompost tea in conjunction with chemical fertilizers offers a viable alternative to using chemical fertilizers alone, promoting sustainable agricultural practices and improving wheat production. It is recommended that mineral nitrogen fertilizer be partially replaced with vermicompost tea to enhance both the productivity and grain quality of wheat while minimizing environmental pollution.
