A rotating imperfect ring resonator of the gyroscope is modeled by a rotating thin ring with evenly distributed point masses. The free response of the rotating ring structure at constant speed is investigated, including the steady elastic deformation and wave response. The dynamic equations are formulated by using Hamilton’s principle in the ground-fixed coordinates. The coordinate transformation is applied to facilitate the solution of the steady deformation, and the displacements and tangential tension for the deformation are calculated by the perturbation method. Employing Galerkin’s method, the governing equation of the free vibration is casted in matrix differential operator form after the separation of the real and imaginary parts with the inextensional assumption. The natural frequencies are calculated through the eigenvalue analysis, and the numerical results are obtained. The effects of the point masses on the natural frequencies of the forward and backward traveling wave curves of different orders are discussed, especially on the measurement accuracy of gyroscopes for different cases. In the ground-fixed coordinates, the frequency splitting results in a crosspoint of the natural frequencies of the forward and backward traveling waves. The finite element method is applied to demonstrate the validity and accuracy of the model. Full article

Climate Crisis and Mental Well-Being: Nature Relatedness, Meaning in Life, and Gender Differences in a Jewish Australian Study

Background: Amid growing concerns about climate crisis and its psychological toll, understanding how people find meaning through their connection to nature is increasingly important. The first aim of this study is to examine the association between Nature Relatedness (NR) and Meaning in Life (MIL). The second aim is to investigate if gender moderates this association and to explore how Jewish traditions influence gender differences in this relationship. Methods: A multi-methods design was employed. Participants were recruited through purposive sampling of prominent Jewish community figures, followed by snowball sampling via informant referrals. Thirty-five participants completed the Meaning in Life Questionnaire (MLQ) and the NR Scale. Two questions provided qualitative insights into participants’ personal interpretations and culturally grounded meanings of NR and MIL in the context of climate change and Jewish traditions. Results: Hierarchical multiple regression analyses assessed the main effects of NR and gender, as well as their interaction, on MLQ subscales. NR positively correlated with the MLQ Search dimension, indicating that individuals with stronger NR actively seek meaning in life. Gender moderated this relationship: NR did not correlate with MLQ Presence overall, but higher NR was linked to greater MIL presence among female participants. Thematic analysis of qualitative responses revealed gender-based variations and emphasized the role of Jewish teachings in connecting NR to cultural and religious practices. Conclusions: The findings point to the importance of cultural, religious, and gender factors in shaping the relationship between NR and MIL in a time of climate change crisis, offering implications for positive mental health research and culturally sensitive interventions. UAV platforms equipped with RTK positioning and LiDAR sensors are increasingly used for landslide monitoring, offering frequent, high-resolution surveys with broad spatial coverage. In this study, we applied high-frequency UAV-based monitoring to the active Baldiola earthflow (Northern Apennines, Italy), integrating 10 UAV–LiDAR and photogrammetric surveys, acquired at average intervals of 14 days over a four-month period. UAV-derived orthophotos and DEMs supported displacement analysis through homologous point tracking (HPT), with robotic total station measurements serving as ground-truth data for validation. DEMs were also used for multi-temporal DEM of Difference (DoD) analysis to assess elevation changes and identify depletion and accumulation patterns. Displacement trends derived from HPT showed strong agreement with RTS data in both horizontal (R2 = 0.98) and vertical (R2 = 0.94) components, with cumulative displacements ranging from 2 m to over 40 m between April and August 2024. DoD analysis further supported the interpretation of slope processes, revealing sector-specific reactivations and material redistribution. UAV-based monitoring provided accurate displacement measurements, operational flexibility, and spatially complete datasets, supporting its use as a reliable and scalable tool for landslide analysis. The results support its potential as a stand-alone solution for both monitoring and emergency response applications. Full article

LiDAR-based Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) serves as a fundamental technology for autonomous navigation. However, in complex environments, LiDAR odometry often experience degraded localization accuracy and robustness. This paper proposes a computationally efficient enhancement strategy for LiDAR odometry, which improves system performance by reinforcing high-quality features throughout the optimization process. For non-ground features, the method employs statistical geometric analysis to identify stable points and incorporates a contribution-weighted optimization scheme to strengthen their impact in point-to-plane and point-to-line constraints. In parallel, for ground features, locally stable planar surfaces are fitted to replace discrete point correspondences, enabling more consistent point-to-plane constraint formulation during ground registration. Experimental results on the KITTI and M2DGR datasets demonstrated that the proposed method significantly improves localization accuracy and system robustness, while preserving real-time performance with minimal computational overhead. The performance gains were particularly notable in scenarios dominated by unstructured environments. Full article

The structural stability of lava tubes is a critical factor for their potential use in lunar base construction. Previous studies could not reflect the details of lava tube boundaries and perform accurate mechanical analysis. To this end, this study proposes a robust method to construct a high-precision, real-scene 3D model based on ground lava tube point cloud data. By employing finite element analysis, this study investigated the impact of real-world cross-sectional geometry, particularly the aspect ratio, on structural stability under surface pressure simulating meteorite impacts. A high-precision 3D reconstruction was achieved using UAV-mounted LiDAR and SLAM-based positioning systems, enabling accurate geometric capture of lava tube profiles. The original point cloud data were processed to extract cross-sections, which were then classified by their aspect ratios for analysis. Experimental results confirmed that the aspect ratio is a significant factor in determining stability. Crucially, unlike the monotonic trends often suggested by idealized models, analysis of real-world geometries revealed that the greatest deformation and structural vulnerability occur in sections with an aspect ratio between 0.5 and 0.6. For small lava tubes buried 3 m deep, the ground pressure they can withstand does not exceed 6 GPa. This process helps identify areas with weaker load-bearing capacity. The analysis demonstrated that a realistic 3D modeling approach provides a more accurate and reliable assessment of lava tube stability. This framework is vital for future evaluations of lunar lava tubes as safe habitats and highlights that complex, real-world geometry can lead to non-intuitive structural weaknesses not predicted by simplified models. Silos are strategic structures widespread in the industrial sectors for post-harvest preservation purposes. Current standards on the seismic design of silos are understandably based on approximate and simplified assumptions, leading intentionally to conservative design-oriented formulae. However, unjustified over-estimation might lead to unnecessary economic losses. As part of the authors’ analytical and experimental ongoing research on the complex seismic behavior of filled silo systems, in this short paper, an in-depth reading of the theoretical framework originally proposed during the 1970s and 1980s is provided to present a better understanding of the unexplained design-oriented formula of the seismic additional pressure in the European standard. A conceptual incongruence in the Eurocode EN1998-4:2006 is pointed out and discussed regarding the dynamic overpressure formula in the case of ground-supported flat-bottom circular silos subjected to seismic excitation. Specifically, a potential miscounting of the geometrical aspect in circular silos, with respect to rectangular ones, leads to an inconsistent amplification of the additional pressures in the range 1.65–2, depending on the filling aspect ratio of the silo. This inconsistency provides the reason for several unexplained results recently published in the scientific literature. A proposal for a physically based correction, retaining the current assumptions made by the EN1998-4, is finally given. Full article

Recent findings highlight that Reelin, a glycoprotein involved in neural development, synaptic plasticity, and neuroinflammation, plays some specific roles in neurodegenerative disorders associated with aging, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Reelin modulates synaptic function and guarantees homeostasis in neuronal-associated organs/tissues (brain and retina). The expression of Reelin is dysregulated in these neurological disorders, showing common pathways depending on chronic neurogenic inflammation and/or dysregulation of the extracellular matrix in which Reelin plays outstanding roles. Recently, the relationship between AMD and AD has gained increasing attention as they share many common risk factors (aging, genetic/epigenetic background, smoking, and malnutrition) and histopathological lesions, supporting certain pathophysiological crosstalk between these two diseases, especially regarding neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and vascular complications. Outside the nervous system, Reelin is largely produced at the gastrointestinal epithelial level, in close association with innervated regions. The expression of Reelin receptors inside the gut suggests interesting aspects in the field of the gut–brain–eye axis, as dysregulation of the intestinal microbiota has been frequently described in neurodegenerative and behavioral disorders (AD, autism, and anxiety and/or depression), most probably linked to inflammatory, neurogenic mediators, including Reelin. Herein we examined previous and recent findings on Reelin and neurodegenerative disorders, offering findings on Reelin’s potential relation with the gut–brain and gut–brain–eye axes and providing novel attractive hypotheses on the gut–brain–eye link through neuromodulator and microbiota interplay. Neurodegenerative disorders will represent the ground for a future starting point for linking the common neurodegenerative biomarkers (β-amyloid and tau) and the new proteins probably engaged in counteracting neurodegeneration and synaptic loss. This paper presents a highly linear one-bit loaded-line phase shifter that leverages PIN diodes in combination with a coupler-based impedance transformer. The proposed phase shifter adopts a loaded-line topology, where PIN diodes are configured in a parallel-to-ground arrangement to improve linearity performance. To further enhance linearity, a coupler-based impedance transformer is employed to reduce the impedance seen by each PIN diode, thereby minimizing nonlinear behavior. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this design, a one-bit digital phase shifter is developed, simulated, and fabricated to achieve a 45-degree phase shift at 2 GHz. Experimental measurements confirm an input third-order intercept point (IIP3) exceeding 100 dBm under a range of test conditions, validating the proposed architecture’s linearity advantages. As large language models (LLMs) and vision–language models (VLMs) become increasingly used in robotics area, a crucial question arises: to what extent do these models replicate human-like cognitive processes, particularly within socially interactive contexts? Whilst these models demonstrate impressive multimodal reasoning and perception capabilities, their cognitive plausibility remains underexplored. In this study, we address this gap by using human visual attention as a behavioural proxy for cognition in a naturalistic human-robot interaction (HRI) scenario. Eye-tracking data were previously collected from participants engaging in social human-human interactions, providing frame-level gaze fixations as a human attentional ground truth. We then prompted a state-of-the-art VLM (LLaVA) to generate scene descriptions, which were processed by four LLMs (DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen-7B, Qwen1.5-7B-Chat, LLaMA-3.1-8b-instruct, and Gemma-7b-it) to infer saliency points. Critically, we evaluated each model in both stateless and memory-augmented (short-term memory, STM) modes to assess the influence of temporal context on saliency prediction. Our results presented that whilst stateless LLaVA most closely replicates human gaze patterns, STM confers measurable benefits only for DeepSeek, whose lexical anchoring mirrors human rehearsal mechanisms. Other models exhibited degraded performance with memory due to prompt interference or limited contextual integration. This work introduces a novel, empirically grounded framework for assessing cognitive plausibility in generative models and underscores the role of short-term memory in shaping human-like visual attention in robotic systems. This paper presents a qualitative case study on the design, implementation, and validation of the Art Nouveau Path, a mobile augmented reality game developed to foster sustainability competences through engagement with Aveiro’s Art Nouveau built heritage. Grounded in the GreenComp framework and developed through a Design-Based Research approach, the game integrates location-based interaction, narrative storytelling, and multimodal augmented reality and multimedia content to activate key competences such as systems thinking, futures literacy, and sustainability-oriented action. The game was validated with 33 in-service schoolteachers, both through a simulation-based training workshop and a curricular review of the game. A mixed-methods strategy was used, combining structured questionnaires, open-ended reflections, and curricular review. The findings revealed strong emotional and motivational engagement, interdisciplinary relevance, and alignment with formal education goals. Teachers emphasized the game’s capacity to connect local identity with global sustainability challenges through immersive and reflective experiences. Limitations pointed to the need for enhanced pedagogical scaffolding, clearer integration into STEAM subjects, and broader accessibility across technological contexts. This study demonstrates that these games, when grounded in competence-based frameworks and inclusive design, can meaningfully support multimodal, situated learning for sustainability and offer valuable contributions to pedagogical innovation in Education for Sustainable Development. This paper studies deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based joint resource allocation and three-dimensional (3D) trajectory optimization for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)–ground access point (GAP) cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) communication in Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) systems. Cooperative and non-cooperative users adopt different signal transmission strategies to meet diverse, task-oriented, quality-of-service requirements. Specifically, the DRL framework based on the Soft Actor–Critic algorithm is proposed to jointly optimize user scheduling, power allocation, and UAV trajectory in continuous action spaces. Closed-form power allocation and maximum weight bipartite matching are integrated to enable efficient user pairing and resource management. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme significantly enhances system performance in terms of throughput, spectral efficiency, and interference management, while enabling robustness against channel uncertainties in dynamic IIoT environments. The findings indicate that combining model-free reinforcement learning with conventional optimization provides a viable solution for adaptive resource management in dynamic UAV-GAP cooperative communication scenarios. This study examined the integraftion of airborne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM)-based handheld LiDAR, and iPhone LiDAR to inspect forest road networks following forest operations. The goal is to overcome the challenges posed by dense canopy cover and ensure accurate and efficient data collection and mapping. Airborne data were collected using the DJI Matrice 300 RTK UAV equipped with a Zenmuse L2 LiDAR sensor, which achieved a high point density of 285 points/m2 at an altitude of 80 m. Ground-level data were collected using the BLK2GO handheld laser scanner (HPLS) with SLAM methods (LiDAR SLAM, Visual SLAM, Inertial Measurement Unit) and the iPhone 13 Pro Max LiDAR. Data processing included generating DEMs, DSMs, and True Digital Orthophotos (TDOMs) via DJI Terra, LiDAR360 V8, and Cyclone REGISTER 360 PLUS, with additional processing and merging using CloudCompare V2 and ArcGIS Pro 3.4.0. The pairwise comparison analysis between ALS data and each alternative method revealed notable differences in elevation, highlighting discrepancies between methods. ALS + iPhone demonstrated the smallest deviation from ALS (MAE = 0.011, RMSE = 0.011, RE = 0.003%) and HPLS the larger deviation from ALS (MAE = 0.507, RMSE = 0.542, RE = 0.123%). The findings highlight the potential of fusing point clouds from diverse platforms to enhance forest road mapping accuracy. However, the selection of technology should consider trade-offs among accuracy, cost, and operational constraints. Mobile LiDAR solutions, particularly the iPhone, offer promising low-cost alternatives for certain applications. Future research should explore real-time fusion workflows and strategies to improve the cost-effectiveness and scalability of multisensor approaches for forest road monitoring. Full article

Leaf loss caused by pest infestations poses a serious threat to forest health. The leaf loss rate (LLR) refers to the percentage of the overall tree-crown leaf loss per unit area and is an important indicator for evaluating forest health. Therefore, rapid and accurate acquisition of the LLR via remote sensing monitoring is crucial. This study is based on drone hyperspectral and LiDAR data as well as ground survey data, calculating hyperspectral indices (HSI), multispectral indices (MSI), and LiDAR indices (LI). It employs Savitzky–Golay (S–G) smoothing with different window sizes (W) and polynomial orders (P) combined with recursive feature elimination (RFE) to select sensitive features. Using Random Forest Regression (RFR) and Convolutional Neural Network Regression (CNNR) to construct a multidimensional (horizontal and vertical) estimation model for LLR, combined with LiDAR point cloud data, achieved a three-dimensional visualization of the leaf loss rate of trees. The results of the study showed: (1) The optimal combination of HSI and MSI was determined to be W11P3, and the LI was W5P2. (2) The optimal combination of the number of sensitive features extracted by the RFE algorithm was 13 HSI, 16 MSI, and hierarchical LI (2 in layer I, 9 in layer II, and 11 in layer III). (3) In terms of the horizontal estimation of the defoliation rate, the model performance index of the CNNRHSI model (MPI = 0.9383) was significantly better than that of RFRMSI (MPI = 0.8817), indicating that the continuous bands of hyperspectral could better monitor the subtle changes of LLR. (4) The I-CNNRHSI+LI, II-CNNRHSI+LI, and III-CNNRHSI+LI vertical estimation models were constructed by combining the CNNRHSI model with the best accuracy and the LI sensitive to different vertical levels, respectively, and their MPIs reached more than 0.8, indicating that the LLR estimation of different vertical levels had high accuracy. According to the model, the pixel-level LLR of the sample tree was estimated, and the three-dimensional display of the LLR for forest trees under the pest stress of larch caterpillars was generated, providing a high-precision research scheme for LLR estimation under pest stress. To learn more about the problem of blast weakening in shallow-buried and extra-thick coal seams, Panjin coal mine was used to provide the engineering background for this study. The influence of blast weakening technology on the vibration of ground buildings was investigated. Based on monitoring the vibration data from the final 400 m of the working face, we established the Sadovsky formula for this coal mine through regression. The maximum safe charge of one blast at different distances was obtained. A numerical model was established and compared with field monitoring data to verify its accuracy. This numerical model was used to analyze the influence of blast weakening vibrations on ground buildings during the final mining stage. Finally, the maximum safe charge for one blast at advancing distances from the working face was derived based on numerical calculation results. It was compared with the maximum safe charge obtained from field measurements. The results show that both exhibit significant consistency, and the maximum safe charge of one blast decreases as the working face advances. In addition, the peak vibration velocity at each monitoring point does not exceed 0.2 cm/s for the remaining 400 m of the measured working face, which is lower than the allowable safety value for blasting vibrations. In the numerical simulation of the final mining stage at 200 m, the ground vibration velocity is largest for the district office, second-largest for the chimney, and smallest for the science and technology building. The maximum vibration velocity and effective stress in the three directions of the three buildings are within the allowable range, indicating that the buildings remained in a safe state. Full article

Although treeline ecotones are significant components of vulnerable mountain ecosystems and key indicators of climate change, treelines of the Southern Hemisphere remain largely outside of research focus. In this study, we investigate, for the first time, the current and future distribution of the treeline species Nothofagus pumilio in the Southern Andes using a Species Distribution Modelling approach. The lack of modelling studies in this region can be contributed to missing occurrence data for the species. In a preliminary study, both point and raster data were generated using a novel Instagram ground truthing approach and remote sensing. Here we tested the performance of the two datasets: a typical binary species dataset consisting of occurrence points and pseudo-absence points and a continuous dataset where species occurrence was determined by supervised classification. We used a Random Forest (RF) classification and a RF regression approach. RF is applicable for both datasets, has a very good performance, handles multicollinearity and remains largely interpretable. We used bioclimatic variables from CHELSA as predictors. The two models differ in terms of variable importance and spatial prediction. While a temperature variable is the most important variable in the RF classification, the RF regression model was mainly modelled by precipitation variables. Heat deficiency is the most important limiting factor for tree growth at treelines. It is evident, however, that water availability and drought stress will play an increasingly important role for the future competitiveness of treeline species and their distribution. Modelling with binary presence–absence point data in the RF classification model led to an overprediction of the potential distribution of the species in summit regions and in glacier areas, while the RF regression model, trained with continuous raster data, led to a spatial prediction with small-scale details. The time-consuming and costly acquisition of complex species information should be accepted in order to provide better predictions and insights into the potential current and future distribution of a species.
