This paper analyzes the availability of lithium resources required to support a global decarbonized energy system featuring electrical energy storage based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. A net-zero carbon grid consisting of existing nuclear and hydro capacity, with the balance being a 50/50 mix of wind and solar power generation, is assumed to satisfy projected world electrical demand in 2050, incorporating the electrification of transportation. The battery electrical storage capacity needed to support this grid is estimated and translated into the required number of nominal 10 MWh LFP storage plants similar to the ones currently in operation. The total lithium required for the global storage system is determined from the number of nominal plants and the inventory of lithium in each plant. The energy required to refine this amount of lithium is accounted for in the estimation of the total lithium requirement. Comparison of the estimated lithium requirements with known global lithium resources indicates that a global storage system consisting only of LFP plants would require only around 12.3% of currently known lithium reserves in a high-economic-growth scenario. The overall cost for a global LFP-based grid-scale energy storage system is estimated to be approximately USD 17 trillion. Full article

Sustainability represents a significant global challenge, requiring a balance between environmental impact and the use of natural resources. White biotechnology, which uses microorganisms and enzymes for environmentally friendly products and processes, offers promising solutions to support a growing population. Within this context, the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica stands out, so we investigated the generation of biomass from two wild strains (ATCC 9773 and NRRL Y-50997) using different carbon sources. Additionally, protein content and amino acid profiles were assessed via standardized analytical methods to evaluate their potential as nutritional yeasts. Both strains demonstrated potential as nutritional yeasts, with biomass productivities of up to 35.5 g/L and 42 g/L, respectively. The protein content was high, with 58.8% for ATCC 9773 and 58.2% for NRRL Y-50997. Furthermore, the strains presented essential amino acid contents of 62.6% and 41.5%, with lysine being the most abundant amino acid. These findings underscore the versatility and productivity of Y. lipolytica, highlighting its potential for sustainable biotechnological applications such as single-cell protein production. Under the dual challenges of global energy crisis and climate change, the building sector, as a major carbon emitter consuming 33% of global primary energy, has seen its energy efficiency optimization become a critical pathway towards achieving carbon neutrality goals. The Window-to-Wall Ratio (WWR), serving as a core parameter in building envelope design, directly influences building energy consumption, with its optimized design playing a decisive role in balancing natural daylighting, ventilation efficiency, and thermal comfort. This study focuses on the traditional One-Seal dwellings (Yikeyin) in Kunming, China, establishing a dynamic wind field-thermal environment coupled analysis framework to investigate the impact mechanism of window dimensions (WWR and aspect ratio) on indoor thermal comfort under natural wind conditions in transitional climate zones. Utilizing the Grasshopper platform integrated with Ladybug, Honeybee, and Butterfly plugins, we developed parametric models incorporating Kunming’s Energy Plus Weather meteorological data. EnergyPlus and OpenFOAM were employed, respectively, for building heat-moisture balance calculations and Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulations, with particular emphasis on analyzing the effects of varying WWR (0.05–0.20) on temperature-humidity, air velocity, and ventilation efficiency during typical winter and summer weeks. Key findings include, (1) in summer, the baseline scenario with WWR = 0.1 achieves a dynamic thermal-humidity balance (20.89–24.27 °C, 65.35–74.22%) through a “air-permeable but non-ventilative” strategy, though wing rooms show humidity-heat accumulation risks; increasing WWR to 0.15–0.2 enhances ventilation efficiency (2–3 times higher air changes) but causes a 4.5% humidity surge; (2) winter conditions with WWR ≥ 0.15 reduce wing room temperatures to 17.32 °C, approaching cold thresholds, while WWR = 0.05 mitigates heat loss but exacerbates humidity accumulation; (3) a symmetrical layout structurally constrains central ventilation, maintaining main halls air changes below one Air Change per Hour (ACH). The study proposes an optimized WWR range of 0.1–0.15 combined with asymmetric window opening strategies, providing quantitative guidance for validating the scientific value of vernacular architectural wisdom in low-energy design. The maritime sector’s transition to sustainable energy is critical for achieving global carbon neutrality, with container terminals representing a key focus due to their high energy consumption and emissions. This study explores the potential of hydrogen energy as a decarbonization solution for port operations, using the Chuanshan Port Area of Ningbo Zhoushan Port (CPANZP) as a case study. Through a comprehensive analysis of hydrogen production, storage, refueling, and consumption technologies, we demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of integrating hydrogen systems into port infrastructure. Our findings highlight the successful deployment of a hybrid “wind-solar-hydrogen-storage” energy system at CPANZP, which achieves 49.67% renewable energy contribution and an annual reduction of 22,000 tons in carbon emissions. Key advancements include alkaline water electrolysis with 64.48% efficiency, multi-tier hydrogen storage systems, and fuel cell applications for vehicles and power generation. Despite these achievements, challenges such as high production costs, infrastructure scalability, and data integration gaps persist. The study underscores the importance of policy support, technological innovation, and international collaboration to overcome these barriers and accelerate the adoption of hydrogen energy in ports worldwide. This research provides actionable insights for port operators and policymakers aiming to balance operational efficiency with sustainability goals. Full article

Massachusetts Bay in the northeastern United States is highly vulnerable to ocean acidification (OA) due to reduced buffering capacity from significant freshwater inputs. We hypothesize that acidification varies across temporal and spatial scales, with short-term variability driven by seasonal biological respiration, precipitation–evaporation balance, and river discharge, and long-term changes linked to global warming and river flux shifts. These patterns arise from complex nonlinear interactions between physical and biogeochemical processes. To investigate OA variability, we applied the Northeast Biogeochemistry and Ecosystem Model (NeBEM), a fully coupled three-dimensional physical–biogeochemical system, to Massachusetts Bay and Boston Harbor. Numerical simulation was performed for 2016. Assimilating satellite-derived sea surface temperature and sea surface height improved NeBEM’s ability to reproduce observed seasonal and spatial variability in stratification, mixing, and circulation. The model accurately simulated seasonal changes in nutrients, chlorophyll-a, dissolved oxygen, and pH. The model results suggest that nearshore areas were consistently more susceptible to OA, especially during winter and spring. Mechanistic analysis revealed contrasting processes between shallow inner and deeper outer bay waters. In the inner bay, partial pressure of pCO2 (pCO2) and aragonite saturation (Ωa) were influenced by sea temperature, dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), and total alkalinity (TA). TA variability was driven by nitrification and denitrification, while DIC was shaped by advection and net community production (NCP). In the outer bay, pCO2 was controlled by temperature and DIC, and Ωa was primarily determined by DIC variability. TA changes were linked to NCP and nitrification–denitrification, with DIC also influenced by air–sea gas exchange. Full article

Achieving carbon emission reductions in the residential building sector while maintaining economic growth represents a global challenge, particularly in rapidly developing regions with internal disparities. This study examines Jiangsu Province in eastern China—a economic hub with north-south development gradients—to develop an integrated framework for differentiated carbon reduction pathways. The methodology combines spatial autocorrelation analysis, logarithmic mean Divisia index (LMDI) decomposition, system dynamics modeling, and Tapio decoupling analysis to examine urban residential building emissions across three regions from 2016–2022. Results reveal significant spatial clustering of emissions (Moran’s I peaking at 0.735), with energy consumption per unit area as the dominant driver across all regions (contributing 147.61%, 131.82%, and 147.57% respectively). Scenario analysis demonstrates that energy efficiency policies can reduce emissions by 10.1% while maintaining 99.2% of economic performance, enabling carbon peak achievement by 2030. However, less developed northern regions emerge as binding constraints, requiring technology investments. Decoupling analysis identifies region-specific optimal pathways: conventional development for advanced regions, balanced approaches for transitional areas, and subsidies for lagging regions. These findings challenge assumptions about environment-economy trade-offs and provide a replicable framework for designing differentiated climate policies in heterogeneous territories, offering insights for similar regions worldwide navigating the transition to sustainable development. The global transition to clean energy necessitates integrated solutions that ensure both environmental sustainability and energy security. This paper proposes a scenario-based modeling framework for urban hybrid energy systems combining small modular reactors (SMRs), photovoltaic (PV) generation, and battery storage within a smart grid architecture. SMRs offer compact, low-carbon, and reliable baseload power suitable for urban environments, while PV and storage enhance system flexibility and renewable integration. Six energy mix scenarios are evaluated using a lifecycle-based cost model that incorporates both capital expenditures (CAPEX) and cumulative carbon costs over a 25-year horizon. The modeling results demonstrate that hybrid SMR–renewable systems—particularly those with high nuclear shares—can reduce lifecycle CO2 emissions by over 90%, while maintaining long-term economic viability under carbon pricing assumptions. Scenario C, which combines 50% SMR, 40% PV, and 10% battery, emerges as a balanced configuration offering deep decarbonization with moderate investment levels. The proposed framework highlights key trade-offs between emissions and capital cost and seeking resilient and scalable pathways to support the global clean energy transition and net-zero commitments. Glass powder, a non-degradable waste material, offers significant potential to reduce cement consumption and carbon emissions in concrete production. However, existing mix design methods for glass powder concrete (GPC) fail to systematically balance economic efficiency, environmental sustainability, and mechanical performance. To address this gap, this study proposes an AI-assisted framework integrating machine learning (ML) and Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) to achieve a sustainable GPC design. A robust database of 1154 experimental records was developed, focusing on five key predictors: cement content, water-to-binder ratio, aggregate composition, glass powder content, and curing age. Seven ML models were optimized via Bayesian tuning, with the Ensemble Tree model achieving superior accuracy (R2 = 0.959 on test data). SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis further elucidated the contribution mechanisms and underlying interactions of material components on GPC compressive strength. Subsequently, a MOO framework minimized unit cost and CO2 emissions while meeting compressive strength targets (15–70 MPa), solved using the NSGA-II algorithm for Pareto solutions and TOPSIS for decision-making. The Pareto-optimal solutions provide actionable guidelines for engineers to align GPC design with circular economy principles and low-carbon policies. This work advances sustainable construction practices by bridging AI-driven innovation with building materials, directly supporting global goals for waste valorization and carbon neutrality. Addressing the imperative for energy transition amid depleting fossil fuels, distributed generation (DG) is increasingly integrated into distribution networks (DNs). This integration necessitates low-carbon dispatching solutions that reconcile economic and environmental objectives. To bridge the gap between conventional “electricity perspective” optimization and emerging “carbon perspective” requirements, this research integrated Carbon Emission Flow (CEF) theory to analyze spatiotemporal carbon flow characteristics within DN. Recognizing the limitations of the single-objective approach in balancing multifaceted demands, a multi-objective optimization model was formulated. This model could capture the spatiotemporal dynamics of nodal carbon intensity for low-carbon dispatching while comprehensively incorporating diverse operational economic costs to achieve collaborative low-carbon and economic dispatch in DG-embedded DN. To efficiently solve this complex constrained model, a novel Q-learning enhanced Moth Flame Optimization (QMFO) algorithm was proposed. QMFO synergized the global search capability of the Moth Flame Optimization (MFO) algorithm with the adaptive decision-making of Q-learning, embedding an adaptive exploration strategy to significantly enhance solution efficiency and accuracy for multi-objective problems. Validated on a 16-node three-feeder system, the method co-optimizes switch configurations and DG outputs, achieving dual objectives of loss reduction and carbon emission mitigation while preserving radial topology feasibility. Against the backdrop of global energy transition and strict environmental regulations, supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) fracturing and oil displacement technologies have emerged as pivotal green approaches in shale gas exploitation, offering the dual advantages of zero water consumption and carbon sequestration. However, the inherent low viscosity of scCO2 severely restricts its sand-carrying capacity, fracture propagation efficiency, and oil recovery rate, necessitating the urgent development of high-performance thickeners. The current research on scCO2 thickeners faces a critical trade-off: traditional fluorinated polymers exhibit excellent philicity CO2, but suffer from high costs and environmental hazards, while non-fluorinated systems often struggle to balance solubility and thickening performance. The development of new thickeners primarily involves two directions. On one hand, efforts focus on modifying non-fluorinated polymers, driven by environmental protection needs—traditional fluorinated thickeners may cause environmental pollution, and improving non-fluorinated polymers can maintain good thickening performance while reducing environmental impacts. On the other hand, there is a commitment to developing non-noble metal-catalyzed siloxane modification and synthesis processes, aiming to enhance the technical and economic feasibility of scCO2 thickeners. Compared with noble metal catalysts like platinum, non-noble metal catalysts can reduce production costs, making the synthesis process more economically viable for large-scale industrial applications. These studies are crucial for promoting the practical application of scCO2 technology in unconventional oil and gas development, including improving fracturing efficiency and oil displacement efficiency, and providing new technical support for the sustainable development of the energy industry. This study innovatively designed an amphiphilic modified amino silicone oil polymer (MA-co-MPEGA-AS) by combining maleic anhydride (MA), methoxy polyethylene glycol acrylate (MPEGA), and amino silicone oil (AS) through a molecular bridge strategy. The synthesis process involved three key steps: radical polymerization of MA and MPEGA, amidation with AS, and in situ network formation. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) confirmed the successful introduction of ether-based CO2-philic groups. Rheological tests conducted under scCO2 conditions demonstrated a 114-fold increase in viscosity for MA-co-MPEGA-AS. Mechanistic studies revealed that the ether oxygen atoms (Lewis base) in MPEGA formed dipole–quadrupole interactions with CO2 (Lewis acid), enhancing solubility by 47%. Simultaneously, the self-assembly of siloxane chains into a three-dimensional network suppressed interlayer sliding in scCO2 and maintained over 90% viscosity retention at 80 °C. This fluorine-free design eliminates the need for platinum-based catalysts and reduces production costs compared to fluorinated polymers. The hierarchical interactions (coordination bonds and hydrogen bonds) within the system provide a novel synthetic paradigm for scCO2 thickeners. This research lays the foundation for green CO2-based energy extraction technologies. Full article

The low-carbon transition of the global energy system is an urgent necessity to address climate change and meet growing energy demand. As a major source of energy consumption and emissions, buildings play a key role in this transition. This study systematically analyzes the flexible resources of building energy systems and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) interaction technologies, and mainly focuses on the regulation characteristics and coordination mechanisms of distributed energy supply (renewable energy and multi-energy cogeneration), energy storage (electric/thermal/cooling), and flexible loads (air conditioning and electric vehicles) within regional energy systems. The study reveals that distributed renewable energy and multi-energy cogeneration technologies form an integrated architecture through a complementary “output fluctuation mitigation–cascade energy supply” mechanism, enabling the coordinated optimization of building energy efficiency and grid regulation. Electricity and thermal energy storage serve as dual pillars of flexibility along the “fast response–economic storage” dimension. Air conditioning loads and electric vehicles (EVs) complement each other via thermodynamic regulation and Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) technologies, constructing a dual-dimensional regulation mode in terms of both power and time. Ultimately, a dynamic balance system integrating sources, loads, and storage is established, driven by the spatiotemporal complementarity of multi-energy flows. This paper proposes an innovative framework that optimizes energy consumption and enhances grid stability by coordinating distributed renewable energy, energy storage, and flexible loads across multiple time scales. This approach offers a new perspective for achieving sustainable and flexible building energy systems. In addition, this paper explores the application of demand response policies in building energy systems, analyzing the role of policy incentives and market mechanisms in promoting building energy flexibility. The construction sector presently consumes about 40% of global energy and generates 36% of CO2 emissions, making facade retrofits a priority for decarbonising buildings. This review clarifies how ventilated facades (VFs), wall assemblies that interpose a ventilated air cavity between outer cladding and the insulated structure, address that challenge. First, the paper categorises VFs by structural configuration, ventilation strategy and functional control into four principal families: double-skin, rainscreen, hybrid/adaptive and active–passive systems, with further extensions such as BIPV, PCM and green-wall integrations that couple energy generation or storage with envelope performance. Heat-transfer analysis shows that the cavity interrupts conductive paths, promotes buoyancy- or wind-driven convection, and curtails radiative exchange. Key design parameters, including cavity depth, vent-area ratio, airflow velocity and surface emissivity, govern this balance, while hybrid ventilation offers the most excellent peak-load mitigation with modest energy input. A synthesis of simulation and field studies indicates that properly detailed VFs reduce envelope cooling loads by 20–55% across diverse climates and cut winter heating demand by 10–20% when vents are seasonally managed or coupled with heat-recovery devices. These thermal benefits translate into steadier interior surface temperatures, lower radiant asymmetry and fewer drafts, thereby expanding the hours occupants remain within comfort bands without mechanical conditioning. Climate-responsive guidance emerges in tropical and arid regions, favouring highly ventilated, low-absorptance cladding; temperate and continental zones gain from adaptive vents, movable insulation or PCM layers; multi-skin adaptive facades promise balanced year-round savings by re-configuring in real time. Overall, the review demonstrates that VFs constitute a versatile, passive-plus platform for low-carbon buildings, simultaneously enhancing energy efficiency, durability and indoor comfort. Future advances in smart controls, bio-based materials and integrated energy-recovery systems are poised to unlock further performance gains and accelerate the sector’s transition to net-zero. Emerging multifunctional materials such as phase-change composites, nanostructured coatings, and perovskite-integrated systems also show promise in enhancing facade adaptability and energy responsiveness. Reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide is a critical global priority. This study investigates the influence of Cu-Ni nanoalloy loading on the CO2 electroreduction efficiency in the context of mesoporous carbon supports. Current methods struggle when it comes to catalyst efficiency, selectivity, and longevity. By synthesizing copper–nickel nanoparticles through chemical reduction and depositing them on porous carbon, this research aimed to optimize catalyst loading and understand the structure–activity relationships. Catalyst performance was evaluated using chronoamperometry and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). The results showed that 12 wt% catalyst loading achieved optimal CO2 reduction, outperforming its 36 wt% counterpart by balancing the catalyst quantity. This study reveals that 12 wt% Cu-Ni loading provides a higher CO2 reduction current density and greater long-term stability than 36 wt% loading, owing to better nanoparticle dispersion and reduced aggregation. Unlike previous Cu-Ni/mesoporous carbon studies, this work uniquely compares different loadings to directly correlate the structure, electrochemical performance, and catalyst durability. Full article

With the continuous expansion of global trade, achieving sustainable maritime transport optimization and operations has become a key strategic direction for transforming maritime transport companies. To summarize the current state of research and identify emerging trends in sustainable maritime transport optimization and operations, this study systematically examines representative studies from the past decade, focusing on three dimensions, technology, management, and policy, using data sourced from the Web of Science (WOS) database. Building on this analysis, potential avenues for future research are suggested. Research indicates that the technological field centers on the integrated application of alternative fuels, improvements in energy efficiency, and low-carbon technologies in the shipping and port sectors. At the management level, green investment decisions, speed optimization, and berth scheduling are emphasized as core strategies for enhancing corporate sustainable performance. From a policy perspective, attention is placed on the synergistic effects between market-based measures (MBMs) and governmental incentive policies. Existing studies primarily rely on multi-objective optimization models to achieve a balance between emission reductions and economic benefits. Technological innovation is considered a key pathway to decarbonization, while support from governments and organizations is recognized as crucial for ensuring sustainable development. Future research trends involve leveraging blockchain, big data, and artificial intelligence to optimize and streamline sustainable maritime transport operations, as well as establishing a collaborative governance framework guided by environmental objectives. This study contributes to refining the existing theoretical framework and offers several promising research directions for both academia and industry practitioners. Full article

Against the backdrop of increasingly severe global climate change, the automotive industry, as a carbon-intensive sector, has found its low-carbon transformation crucial for achieving the “double carbon” goals. This paper constructs manufacturer decision-making models under an oligopolistic market scenario for the single dual-credit policy and the “dual-credit + carbon cap-and-trade” policy, revealing the nonlinear impacts of new energy vehicle (NEV) credit trading prices, carbon trading prices, and credit ratio requirements on manufacturers’ pricing, emission reduction effort levels, and profits. The results indicate the following: (1) Under the “carbon cap-and-trade + dual-credit” policy, manufacturers can balance emission reduction costs and NEV production via the carbon trading market to maximize profits, with lower emission reduction effort levels than under the single dual-credit policy. (2) A rise in credit trading prices prompts hybrid manufacturers (producing both fuel vehicles and NEVs) to increase NEV production and reduce fuel vehicle output; higher NEV credit ratio requirements raise fuel vehicle production costs and prices, suppressing consumer demand. (3) An increase in carbon trading prices raises production costs for both fuel vehicles and NEVs, leading to decreased market demand; hybrid manufacturers reduce emission reduction efforts, while others transfer costs through price hikes to boost profits. (4) Hybrid manufacturers face high carbon emission costs due to excessive actual fuel consumption, driving them to enhance emission reduction efforts and promote low-carbon technological innovation.
