Brief Prompt-Engineering Clinic Substantially Improves AI Literacy and Reduces Technology Anxiety in First-Year Teacher-Education Students: A Pre–Post Pilot Study

Generative AI tools such as ChatGPT are reshaping educational practice, yet first-year teacher-education students often lack the prompt-engineering skills and confidence required to use them responsibly. This pilot study examined whether a concise three-session clinic on prompt engineering could simultaneously boost AI literacy and reduce technology anxiety in prospective teachers. Forty-five freshmen in a Peruvian teacher-education program completed validated Spanish versions of a 12-item AI-literacy scale and a 12-item technology-anxiety scale one week before and after the intervention; normality-checked pre–post differences were analysed with paired-samples t-tests, Cohen’s d, and Pearson correlations. AI literacy rose by 0.70 ± 0.46 points (t (44) = −6.10, p < 0.001, d = 0.91), while technology anxiety fell by 0.58 ± 0.52 points (t (44) = −3.82, p = 0.001, d = 0.56); individual gains were inversely correlated (r = −0.46, p = 0.002). These findings suggest that integrating micro-level prompt-engineering clinics in the first semester can help future teachers engage critically and comfortably with generative AI and guide curriculum designers in updating teacher-training programs. The amygdala is composed of several nuclei, including the lateral nucleus which is the main receiving area for the input from cortical and subcortical brain regions. It mediates fear, anxiety, stress, and pain across species. Evidence suggests that the endocannabinoid system may be a promising target for modulating these processes. Cannabinoid and cannabinoid-related receptors have been identified in the amygdala of rodents, carnivores, and humans, but not in horses. This study aimed to investigate the gene expression of cannabinoid receptors 1 (CB1R) and 2 (CB2R), transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1), and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) within the lateral nucleus of six equine amygdalae collected post mortem from an abattoir using quantitative real-time PCR, cellular distribution, and immunofluorescence. mRNA expression of CB1R and CB2R, but not TRPV1 or PPARγ, was detected. The percentage of immunoreactivity (IR) was calculated using ImageJ software. Cannabinoid receptor 1 immunoreactivity was absent in the somata but was strongly detected in the surrounding neuropil and varicosities and CB2R-IR was observed in the varicosities; TRPV1-IR showed moderate expression in the cytoplasm of somata and processes, while PPARγ-IR was weak-to-moderate in the neuronal nuclei. These findings demonstrate endocannabinoid system components in the equine amygdala and may support future studies on Cannabis spp. molecules acting on these receptors. Full article

Coffee’s Impact on Health and Well-Being

Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages globally, with over 60% of Americans drinking it daily. This review examines coffee’s multifaceted impact on health and well-being, drawing on decades of research. Overall, the consensus is that moderate coffee intake is more beneficial than harmful across a wide range of health outcomes. Numerous large-scale, prospective cohort studies from around the world have consistently shown that moderate coffee consumption—typically three to five cups per day—is associated with reduced overall mortality and lower risk of major diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, stroke, respiratory conditions, cognitive decline, and potentially several types of cancer, including liver and uterine cancers. Both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee have shown benefits. The addition of sugar and cream to coffee may attenuate coffee’s positive health effects. Despite historical concerns, coffee consumption is not linked to increased risks of cancer, hypertension, or arrhythmia. However, some concerns remain. For pregnant women, coffee consumption should be limited to lower amounts, such that the daily intake of caffeine does not exceed 200 mg/day. Also, excessive caffeinated coffee intake may cause anxiety or sleep disturbances. Coffee’s health-promoting mechanisms include improved glucose balancing, increased physical activity, increased fat oxidation, improved lung function, and reduced inflammation. Beyond mortality and chronic diseases, coffee consumption affects many aspects of well-being: it supports hydration, boosts mental acuity, enhances physical performance, and may aid bowel recovery after surgery. While the field is well-studied via long-term observational cohorts, future research should focus on randomized controlled trials, Mendelian randomization studies, and granular analyses of coffee types and additives. Background and Objectives: Depression is a leading cause of disability globally, with treatment challenges including limited access, stigma, and poor adherence. Gamification, which applies game elements such as points, levels, and storytelling into non-game contexts, offers a promising strategy to enhance engagement and augment traditional treatments. Our research is the first study designed to explore the implementation of gamification within the Malaysian context. The objective was to explore the feasibility of implementation of gamification as an adjunctive treatment for adults with depression. Materials and Methods: Focus group discussions were held with five mental health professionals and ten patients diagnosed with moderate depression. The qualitative component assessed perceptions of gamified interventions, while quantitative measures evaluated participants’ depressive and anxiety symptomatology. Results: Three key themes were identified: (1) understanding of gamification as a treatment option, (2) factors influencing its acceptance, and (3) characteristics of a practical and feasible intervention. Clinicians saw potential in gamification to boost motivation, support psychoeducation, and encourage self-paced learning, but they expressed concerns about possible addiction, stigma, and the complexity of gameplay for some patients. Patients spoke of gaming as a source of comfort, escapism, and social connection. Acceptance was shaped by engaging storylines, intuitive design, balanced difficulty, therapist guidance, and clear safety measures. Both groups agreed that gamification should be used in conjunction with standard treatments, be culturally sensitive, and be presented as a meaningful therapeutic approach rather than merely as entertainment. Conclusions: Gamification emerges as an acceptable and feasible supplementary approach for managing depression in Malaysia. Its success depends on culturally sensitive design, robust clinical oversight, and seamless integration with existing care pathways. Future studies should investigate long-term outcomes and establish guidelines for the safe and effective implementation of this approach. We recommend targeted investment into culturally adapted gamified tools, including training, policy development, and collaboration with key stakeholders to realistically implement gamification as a mental health intervention in Malaysia. Background and Aim: Artificial intelligence (AI) is among the most promising innovations for transforming nursing education, making it more interactive, personalized, and competency-based. However, its integration also raises significant ethical and practical concerns. This scoping review aims to analyze and summarize key studies on the application of AI in university-level nursing education, focusing on its benefits, challenges, and future prospects. Methods: A scoping review was conducted using the Population, Concept, and Context (PCC) framework, targeting nursing students and educators in academic settings. A comprehensive search was carried out across the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. Only peer-reviewed original studies published in English were included. Two researchers independently screened the studies, resolving any disagreements through team discussion. Data were synthesized narratively. Results: Of the 569 articles initially identified, 11 original studies met the inclusion criteria. The findings indicate that AI-based tools—such as virtual simulators and ChatGPT—can enhance students’ learning experiences, communication skills, and clinical preparedness. Nonetheless, several challenges were identified, including increased simulation-related anxiety, potential misuse, and ethical concerns related to data quality, privacy, and academic integrity. Conclusions: AI offers significant opportunities to enhance nursing education; however, its implementation must be approached with critical awareness and responsibility. It is essential that students develop both digital competencies and ethical sensitivity to fully leverage AI’s potential while ensuring high-quality education and responsible nursing practice. This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of psychological distress among medical students in Spain, a growing concern given the high prevalence rates of anxiety, depression, and burnout reported across multiple medical schools and universities. To assess the scope and key characteristics of this phenomenon, a thorough literature search was conducted in the PubMed, ProQuest, and Web of Science (WoS) databases. Studies published between 2010 and 2024 in peer-reviewed scientific journals, written in English or Spanish, and specifically focused on medical students enrolled in Spanish universities were considered for inclusion. A total of 14 studies were analysed. The findings indicate that psychological distress often emerges early in medical training and tends to intensify as students progress academically. Female medical students are consistently more affected, as most of the studies reviewed indicate that they exhibit higher levels of depressive symptoms, trait anxiety, and perceived stress. Some research also suggests greater levels of burnout among female students compared to their male peers. Key contributing factors include academic overload and dissatisfaction, sleep deprivation, and the use of maladaptive coping strategies. Although awareness of the issue is increasing, available evidence suggests that institutional responses remain limited, and that only a small number of universities have implemented structured mental health programmes. Overall, the results underscore the urgent need for institutional reforms in Spanish medical education to safeguard students’ mental wellbeing. Key priorities include revising curricula, implementing structured emotional support programmes, and ensuring accessible services—requiring coordinated, long-term commitment across academic, healthcare, and policy sectors. Future research should explore longitudinal trends and the effectiveness of targeted interventions. Full article

Background: Mental health issues among medical students have gained increasing attention globally, with studies indicating a high prevalence of psychological disorders within this population. The use of antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications has become a common response to these mental health challenges. However, it is crucial to understand the extent of their usage and associated effects on students’ mental health and academic performance. This cross-sectional study explored the use of antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs and their impact on the mental health of medical students in Saudi Arabia. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of 561 medical students from 34 universities was conducted between March and July 2024. An anonymous online questionnaire was used to collect sociodemographic, mental health, and medication usage-related information. Results: Most of the participants were female (71.5%) and aged 21–25 years (62.7%). Approximately 23.8% of them used antidepressants, 5.6% reported using anti-anxiety medications, and 14.0% used both types of medication. Among the medication users, 71.7% were using selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and 28.3% were using other medications. Adverse drug reactions were reported by 58.8% of the participants, and 39.6% changed drugs with inadequate efficacy. Notably, 49.0% of the respondents who have ever used medications discontinued their medication without consulting a healthcare professional. Despite these challenges, 62.0% of the participants felt that their medications had a positive impact on their academic performance, 73.4% believed that the benefits outweighed the drawbacks, and 76.2% expressed a willingness to continue taking their medication. In particular, 77.6% agreed that treatment with these drugs could prevent mental breakdowns. Sleep duration, physical activity, and family history of psychiatric disorders were significantly associated with medication use, with p values of 0.002, 0.014, and 0.042, respectively. Conclusions: These results shed light on the need to understand the prescribing practices of antidepressant and anti-anxiety drugs among medical students while promoting the appropriate use of these medications among the students. There is a need to incorporate mental health interventions into counseling services and awareness programs to support students. Future longitudinal studies are needed to explore long-term trends. Recent findings highlight that Reelin, a glycoprotein involved in neural development, synaptic plasticity, and neuroinflammation, plays some specific roles in neurodegenerative disorders associated with aging, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Reelin modulates synaptic function and guarantees homeostasis in neuronal-associated organs/tissues (brain and retina). The expression of Reelin is dysregulated in these neurological disorders, showing common pathways depending on chronic neurogenic inflammation and/or dysregulation of the extracellular matrix in which Reelin plays outstanding roles. Recently, the relationship between AMD and AD has gained increasing attention as they share many common risk factors (aging, genetic/epigenetic background, smoking, and malnutrition) and histopathological lesions, supporting certain pathophysiological crosstalk between these two diseases, especially regarding neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and vascular complications. Outside the nervous system, Reelin is largely produced at the gastrointestinal epithelial level, in close association with innervated regions. The expression of Reelin receptors inside the gut suggests interesting aspects in the field of the gut–brain–eye axis, as dysregulation of the intestinal microbiota has been frequently described in neurodegenerative and behavioral disorders (AD, autism, and anxiety and/or depression), most probably linked to inflammatory, neurogenic mediators, including Reelin. Herein we examined previous and recent findings on Reelin and neurodegenerative disorders, offering findings on Reelin’s potential relation with the gut–brain and gut–brain–eye axes and providing novel attractive hypotheses on the gut–brain–eye link through neuromodulator and microbiota interplay. Neurodegenerative disorders will represent the ground for a future starting point for linking the common neurodegenerative biomarkers (β-amyloid and tau) and the new proteins probably engaged in counteracting neurodegeneration and synaptic loss. Background/Objectives: Biofeedback interventions are increasingly utilized in pediatric and adult care, with evidence in treating specific medical conditions and specific symptoms. However, evidence supporting their efficacy among children and adolescents and young adults (AYAs, aged 15–39) with cancer is limited. The aims of this systematic review are to present, assess, and synthesize the existing research on biofeedback in pediatric and AYA oncology, identify gaps in biofeedback research within this population, and provide recommendations for future research and clinical implications. Methods: A systematic search for articles was conducted using six bibliographic databases—PubMed/MEDLINE (NLM), EMBASE (Elsevier), CINAHL (EBSCO), SPORTDiscus (EBSCO), PsycINFO (OVID), and PEDro (NeuRA)—with an update on 5/7/2025. Included were studies involving pediatric/AYA oncology participants (0–39 years old) and those receiving at least one biofeedback modality. The methodological quality and risk of bias among included articles were assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias (ROB) Tool (modified version for non-randomized studies). A narrative synthesis of included studies examined the type of cancer studied, type of biofeedback used, study designs and methodological quality, and key outcomes evaluated. Results: While the literature suggests that biofeedback may offer beneficial outcomes for managing various pediatric/AYA oncology-related symptoms, such as pain, anxiety, and fatigue, only 8 studies out of 1013 screened (<1%) met inclusion criteria. Limitations included low study quality (small sample sizes, lack of control groups, and methodological inconsistencies). Conclusions: While biofeedback shows promise as a feasible and effective intervention, there is a call to action for well-designed, methodologically rigorous studies to substantiate its effectiveness and inform evidence-based practice specifically for pediatric/AYA oncology patients and clinicians. Depression and Anxiety Changes Associated with Matched Increases in Physical Activity in Education-, Self-Regulation-, and Self-Regulation Plus Relaxation-Based Obesity Treatments in Women: A Pilot Study Investigating Implications for Controlling Emotional Eating

Background/Objectives: Improvements in depression and anxiety, associated with moderate increases in physical activity, might induce reductions in emotional eating, especially in women with obesity, where emotion-driven eating is highly problematic. This pilot, field-based study sought to assess whether physical activity increase, itself, primarily predicts improved mood (biochemical theories) or if psychosocial factors associated with cognitive–behavioral treatment are principal correlates (behavioral theories). An aim was to inform improved treatment processes. Methods: Women with obesity participated in 6-month community-based behavioral obesity treatments emphasizing either: (a) standard education in weight-reduction methods (n = 28), (b) eating-related self-regulation methods (n = 24), or (c) self-regulation + relaxation training (n = 24). They completed a series of behavioral and psychological self-reports at baseline and Months 3 and 6. Results: Findings confirmed no significant difference in 3-month increases in physical activity, by group. There were significantly greater overall improvements in depression, emotional eating, self-regulation, and self-efficacy across the two self-regulation-focused groups (ps < 0.02), with anxiety improvement not reaching significance (p = 0.055). Separate significant paths from 3-month changes in depression and anxiety → self-efficacy change → emotional eating change were found. The same significant path was detected emanating from 6-month anxiety change; however, the hypothesized path of 6-month changes in depression → self-regulation → self-efficacy → emotional eating was, rather, significant. Weight reduction was considerably greater in the two self-regulation-based groups (~6% reduction), with simultaneously entered changes in self-regulation and self-efficacy significant predictors of those weight changes. Conclusions: Findings suggested viability in behavioral theory-driven explanations of the physical activity-mood improvement relationship. Future treatment foci on self-regulatory skills development leading to improvements in eating-related self-efficacy, emotional eating, and weight were suggested to extend the findings of this pilot study. While traditionally associated with physical hoarding disorder, DH presents unique challenges in digital environments, particularly among university students increasingly immersed in technology. This study examines the relationship between DH and academic performance, proposing a theoretical model in which academic engagement and academic burnout act as mediating mechanisms. Drawing on the Job Demands–Resources Theory, we provide evidence that DH contributes to a health impairment process that negatively affects student outcomes. Our findings reveal DH as a novel predictor of academic burnout, highlighting its detrimental impact on academic performance. These results carry significant theoretical and practical implications, offering new insights into the role of technology-related anxiety disorders in educational settings. From a practical perspective, our study underscores the need for higher education institutions to implement targeted interventions focused on emotional regulation and learning strategies to mitigate the negative effects of DH. Despite limitations related to sample specificity and cross-sectional data, this research opens avenues for future longitudinal studies and interventions aimed at addressing DH in both academic and professional contexts. By linking digital behaviors to mental health and performance, this work aligns with public health interests in understanding technology’s impact on youth well-being. Full article

Background/Objectives: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are chronic autoimmune conditions that impact the physical and psychological well-being of pediatric patients. While previous studies have shown a high prevalence of mental health challenges among youth with chronic conditions, the prevalence of mental health issues in Canadian pediatric patients with JIA and IBD remains unclear. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of documented mental health disorders and related medication use of youth with JIA or IBD at a tertiary care centre. Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart review of youths aged 12–17 diagnosed with JIA or IBD at McMaster Children’s Hospital (MCH) to understand the prevalence of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), separation anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder (SAD), obsessive–compulsive disorders (OCD), eating disorders, major depressive disorder (MDD), adolescent adjustment disorder, suicide attempt/suicide ideation, self-harm behaviour, substance use disorder, and attention deficit disorders (ADD). Results: We reviewed 429 patient charts, including 303 patients with IBD and 126 with JIA. Our findings identified 90 IBD patients and 20 JIA patients who had one or more documented mental health conditions. Proportionately, there was a higher prevalence of mental health conditions among IBD patients (30%) compared to JIA patients (16%). The most frequently observed conditions in both IBD and JIA patients were GAD (63%, 50%), ADD (33%, 35%), and MDD (29%, 15%). Conclusions: These findings highlight the critical need for early mental health screening and integrated care approaches that address both medical and psychosocial needs in adolescents with chronic illnesses. Future research should incorporate prospective study designs, include diverse geographic and demographic populations, and explore targeted interventions to improve mental and physical health outcomes in this vulnerable group. Background/Objectives: Social worry may appear in preadolescence, causing it to persist in the future, such that adolescents become more avoidant of situations in which they are evaluated by others. Many previous studies have shown that approximately 4% of preadolescent children suffer from high levels of social worry, which may lead to other problems in the future. It is important to take necessary precautions to explore this worry and take the necessary measures to address it. This study aimed to do so by extracting the psychometric properties of the Social Worries Questionnaire (SWQ) for preadolescence in Arab countries. Methods: The sample consisted of 269 children aged 8–12 years. The SWQ, Spence Child Anxiety Scale (SCAS), Child Abuse Self-Reporting Scale (CASRS-12), and Arabic version of the Children’s Depression Inventory (AVCDI) were administered via various social media. Results: Confirmatory factor analysis was used, and the one-factor model showed that the scale consists of 14 items. The results also indicated evidence of discriminant validity, and that the internal consistency was acceptable. For reliability, the test–retest results showed that the value was appropriate. Conclusions: This scale could be valuable in detecting worry in preadolescent children and providing them with therapeutic and psychological services. Full article

Background: Art therapy is increasingly recognized as a valuable complementary intervention for individuals with eating disorders (EDs), who frequently experience comorbid anxiety and difficulties with emotional regulation. However, few studies have examined its short-term effects on state and trait anxiety within structured clinical settings. Methods: This pilot study involved 19 adolescent females (mean age 17.7 ± 2.1 years) diagnosed with anorexia nervosa (AN) or bulimia nervosa (BN) and admitted to the Mariconda Regional Residence for Eating Disorders (ASL Salerno, Italy) in residential or semi-residential treatment. Participants completed a structured six-week cycle of weekly textile-based art therapy sessions, designed to promote emotional expression and body reconnection. State and trait anxiety levels were assessed pre- and post-session using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Repeated-measures ANOVA was used to analyze state anxiety changes; a linear mixed-effects model was applied to trait anxiety. Results: State anxiety significantly decreased immediately after sessions (p = 0.002). A significant main effect of session (p = 0.01) and a time × session interaction (p = 0.025) indicated variability across sessions. Trait anxiety showed a non-significant trend toward reduction (p = 0.11); however, reductions were significant at sessions 4 (p = 0.015), 5 (p < 0.001), and 6 (p = 0.005). Conclusions: Art therapy may offer immediate reductions in state anxiety and may contribute to a longer-term reduction in trait anxiety with 4–6 sessions. These findings support integrating creative interventions within multidisciplinary ED treatment programs. Future research with larger samples and control groups is needed to confirm and expand upon these preliminary results. Full article

Background/Objectives: Protecting students’ mental health during university is essential for their future quality of life. Therefore, diet should be emphasized as a complementary and preventive strategy in supporting and maintaining mental health. This study aimed to examine the association between dietary inflammatory and antioxidant indices and mental health indicators (depression, anxiety, stress, and well-being) in university students. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 907 university students. We collected dietary data using a 24 h recall. Based on this data, we used 33 food parameters to calculate the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) and 6 antioxidant nutrients to calculate the Dietary Antioxidant Index (DAI). We evaluated mental health using the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scales-21 (DASS-21), and assessed well-being using the World Health Organization Five Well-Being Index (WHO-5). Results: Overall, 62.4% of participants reported symptoms of depression, 56.2% anxiety, and 40.7% stress. Anxiety and stress levels were significantly higher among females compared to males (p < 0.001 and p = 0.005, respectively). In fully adjusted models, depression scores were significantly higher in the highest DII tertile compared to the lowest (B = 1.74; 95% CI: 0.24–3.26), while well-being was lower (B = −0.82; 95% CI: −1.65 to −0.00). For DAI, participants in tertile 2 had significantly lower anxiety (B = −1.38; 95% CI: −2.63 to −0.14), depression (B = −1.69; 95% CI: −3.19 to −0.19), and stress (B = −1.70; 95% CI: −3.22 to −0.18) scores compared to tertile 1. No significant association was found between DAI and well-being. Conclusions: In this study, university students’ pro-inflammatory diets were associated with poorer mental health profiles. Enhancing the diet’s anti-inflammatory potential may be a promising strategy to support mental health in this population. Full article
