Recent evidence suggests that nano-TiO2 particles improve antimicrobial and physical properties when incorporated into dental prosthetic materials. However, there exists a paucity of information regarding their impact on material properties when the prosthetic materials are 3D-printed over time. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the time-dependent printability and surface property changes occurring in a 3D-printed denture base resin containing nano-titanium dioxide (TiO2) particles. A 0.4 wt% concentration of 30 nm rutile TiO2 nanoparticles was ultrasonically dispersed into a denture base resin. Disks were printed weekly using a Form 2 SLA printer until printing failed. Printability, surface roughness (Ra), color difference (ΔEab), and translucency parameters were measured across timepoints. Surface roughness was assessed via profilometry, while color and translucency were evaluated using a spectrophotometer under standardized conditions. Print failure occurred at week 8, beyond which the resin could no longer reliably produce full specimens. Ra roughness decreased from 3.83 µm to 0.48 µm, which denoted a significant time-dependent decrease (ρ = −0.733, p = 0.016). Color difference with the unmodified control declined from 26.32 to 17.13 ΔEab units (ρ = −0.976, p < 0.001). All printed samples exceeded the clinically acceptable thresholds for both Ra (0.2 µm) and ΔEab (<3.7). Although the printability of the resin–TiO2 mixture was maintained for 7 weeks, mixture homogeneity declined over time. TiO2 additions to a denture polymer produced significant changes in surface roughness and color that were not clinically acceptable. Results from this study illustrate the time dependence required for retaining surface properties in 3D-printed dentures containing nano-TiO2. Full article

Background/Objectives: Conservative options for single-tooth replacements in the anterior region include all-ceramic one-retainer resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses (RBFDPs) and three-unit fixed partial dentures (FPDs). Methods: This systematic review assessed their clinical outcomes. Following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, an electronic search of MEDLINE/PubMed was conducted from November 1991 to March 2025 for randomized clinical trials (RCTs), prospective cohort studies (PCSs), and retrospective cohort studies (RCSs). Keywords included dental prosthesis, fixed prosthesis, resin-bonded prosthesis, single-tooth replacement, anterior teeth, all-ceramic, lithium disilicate, monolithic, zirconia, survival rate, and success rate. Failures and complications were analyzed to determine long-term outcomes. Results: The search identified 990 articles, and the full-text review of 54 articles was performed, resulting in 23 studies meeting the inclusion criteria. This review revealed that one-retainer RBFDPs and three-unit FPDs in the anterior region demonstrated high survival and success rates. However, debonding was a common complication in RBFDPs, while framework design issues were noted in FPDs. Conclusions: These outcomes highlight the reliability of both approaches as conservative, all-ceramic, prosthodontic interventions for anterior single-tooth replacements. The consideration of one-retainer RBFDPs and three-unit FPDs is advisable due to their favorable clinical performance and minimal invasiveness. Full article

Purpose: The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of exostosis in the Mississippi population. Methods: The patient archives of the UMMC School of Dentistry between January 2018 and May 2021 were examined. Patients with exostosis were included in the study based on the findings from intraoral photographs, full-moth series (FMS), panoramic radiographs, and cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT) images of the patients. Patients were excluded from the study if they did not have maxillary or mandibular exostosis. In addition, each patient’s age, gender, and ethnic origins, such as Caucasian, African-American, or Asian, were recorded. All data regarding exostosis were evaluated and categorized according to age, gender, and ethnicity. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed for more detailed statistical analysis. Results: A total of 1242 patients were examined for the presence of maxillary and mandibular tori. In total, 303 patients were diagnosed with maxillary and/or mandibular tori among the Mississippi population, with a prevalence rate of 24.4%. Exostosis was seen more in females (57.4%) compared to males (42.6%). The highest prevalence of exostosis was seen in Caucasians (71.3%), followed by African-Americans (23.8%) and Asians (5%). Conclusions: High prevalence of exostosis was seen in the Mississippi population. Our findings will help clinicians to be more aware of these bony protuberances and, thus, better at diagnosing them. This may specifically help oral surgeons, periodontists, and prosthodontists in pre-prosthodontic surgery and denture fabrication. Full article

Background: Denture stomatitis is an inflammatory condition involving swelling and redness of the oral mucosa beneath a denture. Among various available treatments, zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) and nano-wire nanostructures have been suggested as potential future therapies. However, there is a lack of information in the literature about the effectiveness of ZnONPs regarding microbial adhesion to different denture base resins. Here, we review studies on the effect of ZnONP use on microbial adhesion to denture base resins to answer the following study question: “Does incorporating ZnONPs into denture base resins reduce microbial adhesion?” Methods: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, an electronic and manual search ranging from Jan 2000 to May 2024 was performed using PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases to answer the study question. All full-length English-language articles investigating the effects of ZnO nanostructures on Candida albicans adhesion to polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) denture base resins were included. The extracted data were tabulated for qualitative and quantitative analysis of the included studies. Results: Of the 479 studies reviewed, 7 studies successfully met the eligibility criteria. All included studies utilized PMMA as the denture base material with different polymerization methods. C. albicans was the most extensively studied microbial species, with various count methods used. Six studies concluded a statistically significant impact of ZnONPs on decreasing C. albicans adhesion to the denture base. However, one study reported the opposite. Conclusions: Incorporating ZnONPs into PMMA denture base resin has a positive impact on reducing C. albicans adherence and could be recommended for denture stomatitis treatment. However, further studies are needed to cover the notable gap in data regarding the safety and effectiveness of ZnO nanostructures. Full article

Background: Expanding dental care coverage for the elderly is globally recommended but not widely implemented due to its high costs and intangible benefits. Methods: This study examined the impact of such an expansion in Korea using the imputation-based method proposed by Borusyak et al. We analyzed data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007–2019) on dental service utilization and chewing ability among older adults. Results: The policy resulted in a 13.5% increase in partial denture use and a 60.5% increase in dental implants among those aged 65 and above. These changes corresponded with reductions in severe chewing difficulty by 23.3% and 13.0%, respectively. No significant changes were observed in full denture use. The price elasticity of demand for partial dentures and dental implants was estimated to be −0.19 and −0.86, respectively. Conclusions: These findings underscore the critical role of affordability in enhancing the utilization of dental implants among the elderly and highlight the importance of appropriately expanding dental insurance coverage to improve oral health outcomes in this population. Craniosacral rhythm is a manual therapy technique that focuses on the subtle, rhythmic movement of cerebrospinal fluid as it flows through the central nervous system and musculoskeletal system. Through light and delicate manipulation of the cranial bones, membranes and soft tissues of the head and neck, it promotes rebalancing and release from tension in the body, improving the circulation of the cerebrospinal fluid and the individual’s health. In the field of prosthetic dentistry, in rare cases, such as a full arch or removable partial denture, the patient perceives a sensation of constriction even though all procedures have been used correctly. In this work, a new design fora removable partial denture is proposed that does not interfere with the primary respiratory mechanism, reducing the sensation of constriction in the patient. The materials used are the same as those used for a normal removable partial denture, and the technique used is the “lost wax” one: the novelty is that the prosthesis is made in two separate parts that are joined by a central connection; the result is a removable partial denture with a small central thickening in the main joint represented by the connection of the two pieces. Craniosacral breathing movements are favored with this prosthesis as the metal structure is hyperstatic towards intrusion movements, more or less virtual in the opposite direction, i.e., extrusion towards the vestibule. Printing orientation is one of the printing parameters that affect the properties of three-dimensional (3D)-printed resins. Different printing orientations and directions have been suggested; however, no clear and specific orientations are recommended in the literature in terms of the printing orientation effect on the accuracy and fit of 3D-printed removable dental prostheses. This review aimed to evaluate the effect of printing orientation on the fit and accuracy of 3D-printed removable dental prostheses. The PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were searched for published articles that investigated the effect of printing orientations on the accuracy and fit of the 3D-printed denture base. Full-length English published articles were searched between January 2010 and December 2023, which examined topics related to printing orientations, building angles, 3D printing, printing technology, accuracy, dimensional changes, internal fit, marginal integrity, marginal discrepancies, trueness, precision, and adaptation. Of the ten included studies, one investigated maxillary and mandibular denture bases, seven assessed maxillary denture bases, and two evaluated mandibular bases. Different printing orientations, ranging from 0° to 315°, were explored, with a higher prevalence of 0°, 45°, and 90°. The included studies utilized stereolithography and digital light processing printing technologies. High accuracy was observed at 45°, followed by 90. Additional struts and bars on the cameo surface increased the accuracy of the 3D-printed denture base. These results shows that printing orientation has a significant effect on the accuracy of 3D-printed resin, with 45° exhibiting the highest accuracy. In addition to the support structure, the density and position can impact the accuracy. Full article

Background: The improvement of oral-health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) with different types of prosthesis for completely edentulous jaws in the elderly population is a critical factor in clinical decision making for these vulnerable patients. This review aims to evaluate the changes in OHRQoL after treatment with different types of full-arch prostheses in the elderly edentulous population to determine the prostheses that result in the greatest improvement in OHRQoL. Materials and Methods: Clinical studies of different types of full-arch prostheses that measured the OHRQoL in edentulous patients 60 years or older were searched for in the PubMed, Embase and Scopus electronic databases, with additional hand searching to summarize the outcomes of the selected studies. Result: Among the 302 identified studies, 10 studies were selected. A total of 504 patients wearing 133 complete dentures, 372 implant overdentures and 39 fixed prostheses were assessed among the selected studies. The overall OHIP and GOHAI scores were evaluated at baseline and in the 3rd, 6th, 12th and 18th months of treatment with the respective prostheses. The improved OHRQoL with overall OHIP scores associated with conventional dentures were 9.21–12.5% from the 3rd month to 1 year after treatment, whereas those associated with implant overdentures and full-arch fixed prosthesis were 9–25.26% at 1 year and 18.53–26.79 at the 18th-month follow-up, respectively. The increased overall GOHAI scores were 21.3–25.43% for conventional dentures, 36.82–41.32% for implant overdentures and 39.48–42.83% for full-arch fixed prosthesis from the 3rd month to the 6th-month follow-up. Conclusion: In general, the improvement in OHRQoL after rehabilitation with implant overdentures declined at one year, and that with full-arch fixed prosthesis declined at the 18th-month follow-up; meanwhile, the OHRQoL associated with conventional dentures improved stably up to one year, but the implant-supported prostheses resulted in an obviously greater improvement in the OHRQoL than that obtained with conventional dentures. However, studies with longer follow-up periods are still required to evaluate the long-term clinical effectiveness. Full article

Oral infections occur due to contact between biofilm rich in Candida albicans formed on the inner surface of complete dentures and the mucosa. This study investigated historical advances in the prevention and treatment of oral mucosal infection and identified gaps in the literature. Bibliographic research was conducted, looking at PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus, where 935 articles were found. After removing duplicates and excluding articles by reading the title and abstract, 131 articles were selected for full reading and 104 articles were included. Another 38 articles were added from the gray literature. This review followed the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. The historical period described ranges from 1969 to 2023, in which, during the 21st century, in vitro and in vivo studies became more common and, from 2010 to 2023, the number of randomized controlled trials increased. Among the various approaches tested are the incorporation of antimicrobial products into prosthetic materials, the improvement of oral and denture hygiene protocols, the development of synthetic and natural products for the chemical control of microorganisms, and intervention with local or systemic antimicrobial agents. Studies report good results with brushing combined with sodium hypochlorite, and new disinfectant solutions and products incorporated into prosthetic materials are promising. Full article

A common application for intraoral scanners is the digitization of the morphology of teeth and palatal rugae. Palatal scans are most commonly required to fabricate complete dentures and immediate transitional dentures and serve as a reference point for assessing orthodontic results. However, they are also frequently included by accident, even though the main purpose of intraoral scanning is to reconstruct dentition using computer-aided manufacturing (CAM). The literature shows that the identification of disaster victims has frequently involved palatal rugae impressions. As the skull provides sound insulation, the rugae are resistant to heat, chemicals, and stress. Antemortem data might be difficult to find during a forensic inquiry, particularly in disaster victim identification cases. In contrast with DNA and fingerprints, there is a greater likelihood of having a dental record that contains palatal scans. With specialized software, the scans can be exported as open stereolithography (STL) files. Considering that a full case consumes up to about 100 MB of hard drive space, long-term storage should not be an issue compared to a plaster model. Additionally, dentists widely use online databases to exchange data for smile design, implant registration, and orthodontic purposes. This will produce a digital database that grows quickly and is readily usable for forensic investigations. The uniqueness of forensic features is frequently challenged; however, palatal morphology’s unique trait could make it possible as it is characteristic of individuals as well as the most distinguishing factor. This review will highlight how rugae, palatal morphology, mirroring, superimposition, and geometrics can serve in forensic identification. Full article

In this study, a methodology was developed for ranking manufacturing technologies of removable complete dentures (RCDs) according to the results of their full-scale mechanical tests. The actuality of the study is motivated by establishing the advantages and drawbacks of 3D-printed RCDs in contrast with ones manufactured via an analog protocol. The RCDs were fabricated via four technological routes that included various combinations of subtractive technologies (hot polymerization/HP and CAD/CAM milling) and additive manufacturing (digital light processing/DLP) ones and the installation of commercially available cosmetic denture teeth (DT). In the mechanical tests, different blocks of teeth (incisors, canines, premolars and molars) were loaded. To solve the ranking problem, it was proposed to interpret the results of the mechanical tests in terms of the reliability, durability and compliance/stiffness criteria. For this purpose, the combined AHP-VIKOR method was applied. In addition, a computer simulation of the mechanical loading conditions and the response of the RCDs was performed based on the finite element method (FEM). As the key conclusion, it was stated that additive manufacturing (AM) methods are competitive and cost-effective techniques for the fabrication of RCDs. Full article

The long-term success and predictability of implant-supported restorations largely depends on the biomechanical forces (stresses) acting on implants and the surrounding alveolar bone in the mandible. The aim of our study was to investigate the biomechanical behavior of an edentulous mandible with an implant-supported full bridge on four implants under simulated masticatory forces, in the context of different loading schemes, using a three-dimensional finite element analysis (3D-FEA). A patient-specific 3D finite element model was constructed using pre- and post-implantation computer tomography (CT) images of a patient undergoing implant treatment. Simplified masticatory forces set at 300 N were exerted vertically on the denture in four different simulated load cases (LC1–LC4). Two sets of simulations for different implants and denture materials (S1: titanium and titanium; S2: titanium and cobalt-chromium, respectively) were made. Stress outputs were taken as maximum (Pmax) and minimum principal stress (Pmin) and equivalent stress (Peqv) values. The highest peak Pmax values were observed for LC2 (where the modelled masticatory force excluded the cantilevers of the denture extending behind the terminal implants), both regarding the cortical bone (S1 Pmax: 89.57 MPa, S2 Pmax: 102.98 MPa) and trabecular bone (S1 Pmax: 3.03 MPa, S2 Pmax: 2.62 MPa). Overall, LC1—where masticatory forces covered the entire mesio−distal surface of the denture, including the cantilever—was the most advantageous. Peak Pmax values in the cortical bone and the trabecular bone were 14.97–15.87% and 87.96–94.54% higher in the case of S2, respectively. To ensure the long-term maintenance and longevity of treatment for implant-supported restorations in the mandible, efforts to establish the stresses of the surrounding bone in the physiological range, with the most even stress distribution possible, have paramount importance. This technical note aims to present a recently developed computer-guided protocol characterized by titanium-reinforced stackable surgical guides during post-extractive implant placement and subsequent immediate loading. A full maxillary edentulism was rehabilitated with one-piece implants, starting from a pre-existing removable denture. 3D digital scans of the removable denture and upper and lower arches were performed. On this basis, a prototype with ideal esthetic and functional outcomes was realized and replicated into a custom-made radiological stent with markers. The superimposition of STL and DICOM files allowed virtual planning of one-piece implants in the ideal prosthetically driven position. The stackable guides, composed of a fixed base template and additional removable components, were then realized. The fixed template, initially secured with anchor pins to the bone, was no longer removed. The removable components, which were screwed to the base template, were used to perform implant surgery and immediate prosthetic loading. No surgical complications occurred, the implants achieved a minimum insertion torque of 35 Ncm, and immediate prosthetic loading was performed. The base template allowed for the maintenance of a fixed reference during the entire workflow, improving the transition between the digital project, the surgical procedure, and the prosthetic rehabilitation. Some resin polymers available for three-dimensional (3D) printing are slightly elastic, which may be advantageous when used for full crown coverage of the primary teeth. This study was performed to evaluate the mechanical properties of two types of 3D-printed resin crowns in terms of strength and surface characteristics. Polymer resins used for temporary crowns (TCs) and temporary flexible dentures (TFDs) were tested. Digitally designed crowns with different thicknesses (0.4 and 0.6 mm) were 3D-printed. Milled zirconia crowns were used as the control. The static and dynamic fracture loads of the crowns were measured. The crown surface was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy. The average strength did not differ between the types of crowns. The differences between the dynamic and static fracture loads were insignificant. In the TC group, thicker crowns showed lower strength both under static and dynamic loads. After thermomechanical loading, microcracks and dropouts of macrofillers were detected on the surface of all types of resin crowns. The deposition of abraded debris occurred more in the TFD group. The 3D-printed resin crowns were thought to endure biting forces in children. However, some limitations of the material itself should be improved for consideration as a new treatment option in pediatric dentistry. Full article

Scanning edentulous arches during complete denture fabrication is a crucial step; however, the quality of the resulting digital scan is still questionable. The purpose of this study is to systematically review studies (both clinical and in vitro) and determine whether intraoral scanners have clinically acceptable accuracy when recording completely edentulous arches for the fabrication of removable complete dentures. An electronic search in medical databases like PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science (WOS), using a combination of relevant keywords, retrieved 334 articles. After full-text evaluation, twelve articles fulfilled the inclusion criteria for this review (eight clinical studies and four in vitro studies). A quality analysis of the included studies was carried out using the QUADAS-2 tool. The accuracy values varied between different intraoral scanners. Different regions of the edentulous arches showed differences in trueness and precision values in both in vitro and clinical studies. Peripheral borders, the inner seal, and poorly traceable structures like the soft palate showed maximum discrepancies. The accuracy of intraoral scanners in recording clear anatomic landmarks like hard tissues with attached mucosa was comparable to conventional edentulous arch impressions. However, higher discrepancies were recorded when digitizing mobile and poorly traceable structures. Intraoral scanners can be used to digitize denture-bearing areas, but the interpretation of the peripheral border and the soft palate should be carefully carried out. Full article
