This comparative study, the first to date, examines how representative samples of citizens across 40 OECD countries (N = 41,232) balance religion and child welfare when deciding whether to move a five-year-old thriving in foster care to match parental religion. Using a vignette experiment and six hypotheses, the analysis links religiosity, perceived religious rights, authoritarian values, institutional context, and confidence in child protection to placement preferences. A large majority (88%) would not move the child, prioritising stability and well-being. The results show a trust “paradox” in which higher confidence in child protection correlates with support for moving the child. Justifications show broad appeal to the best interest principle across opposing choices. Deference to professional assessment varies markedly across countries, indicating divergent authority of social work expertise. Findings underscore the need to operationalise the best interests standard and to account for institutional context, while policymakers should recognise stable placements as the public default. As artificial intelligence (AI) agents become deeply integrated into fitness systems, trustworthy human–AI agent interaction has become pivotal for user engagement in smart home fitness (SHF) e-commerce platforms. Grounded in the Computers Are Social Actors (CASA) framework, this study empirically investigates how, acting as AI fitness coaches, AI agents’ technical and social features shape users’ active engagement in the in-home social e-commerce context. A mixed-method approach was employed, combining computational text mining of 17,582 user reviews from fitness e-commerce platforms with a survey (N = 599) of Chinese consumers. The results show that (1) the technical–social features of AI agents serving as AI fitness coaches include visibility, gamification, interactivity, humanness, and sociability; (2) these five technical–social features of AI agents positively influence user compliance via both cognitive and emotional trust in AI agents; (3) these five technical–social features of AI agents serving as AI fitness coaches positively impact active engagement via both cognitive and emotional trust in AI agents. This study extends the CASA framework to the domain of AI coaching by demonstrating the parallel roles of cognitive and emotional trust in AI agents. For designers and managers in the fitness e-commerce industries, this study offers actionable insights for designing AI agents integrating functional and social features that foster trust and drive behavioral outcomes. Background/Objectives: Population aging in Europe presents significant healthcare, economic, and social challenges, particularly in the care of individuals with chronic diseases and frailty. Advance Care Planning (ACP) fosters patient autonomy and aligns end-of-life care with individual preferences. This study aimed to evaluate the acceptability and feasibility of an ACP model in nursing homes. Secondary objectives included exploring clinical characteristics of participants and assessing how frailty is associated with residents’ care goals and preferences. Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted among long-term residents of a Spanish nursing home in 2023. ACP was offered to all new permanent residents, with outcomes assessed through quarterly follow-ups. Acceptance rates, care preferences, and resident satisfaction were primary measures. Clinical data, frailty, functional status, cognitive assessments, and nutritional status were analyzed. The model of ACP is structured into three progressive levels: (1) identification of patients’ values, preferences, and global goals of care; (2) decision-making regarding specific clinical interventions in acute situations; and (3) end-of-life care preferences, including preferred place of death, desired companionship, and comfort-focused measures. Results: From 79 new residents admitted, 93.7% accepted ACP. The process required an average of 139 min to complete, distributed over 3–4 sessions. The main documented preferences included do-not-resuscitate orders (CPR) (79%), hospital transfer decisions (50%), and other individualized care choices. When stratified by frailty level, which was categorized as low, moderate, or high—we observed a clear gradient in care preferences. CPR preference increased from 59.3% (Low) to 87.5% (Moderate) and 95.2% (High). Preference to avoid hospital transfer rose from 22.2% to 50.0% and 85.7%, respectively. Avoidance of instrumentalization increased from 56.2% to 85.0% and 95.0%. Conclusions: ACP in nursing homes is highly acceptable and feasible, with benefits in aligning care with patient preferences and enhancing satisfaction. Full article

The growing cultural diversity of higher education calls for systematic and curriculum-embedded approaches to the development of students’ intercultural competence. This article explores strategies for fostering intercultural sensitivity and effective cross-cultural communication, drawing on Bennett’s Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS) and Deardorff’s intercultural competence framework. The study situates these frameworks within an Internationalization at Home perspective, emphasizing the role of intentional pedagogy, assessment, and attention to the hidden curriculum in supporting intercultural learning. Adopting a design-based pedagogical research approach, the study examines how intercultural competence frameworks can be operationalized through developmentally sequenced classroom interventions in higher education. The pedagogical framework and activities, including cultural artifact presentations, critical incidents, simulations, role-plays, and structured reflective practices, were developed and implemented in culturally diverse bachelor’s and master’s level courses in Spanish higher education institutions within the Erasmus+ MULTICLASS project. Classroom-based evidence collected in Spanish higher education contexts, including reflective discussions, written reflections, and observed communicative behaviors, indicates that approximately 70% of students (n = 44; N = 63) demonstrated observable progression in intercultural sensitivity, most commonly from Minimization toward Acceptance. The contribution of this article lies in linking established intercultural competence models with practical guidance for curriculum design and pedagogical sequencing within Internationalization at Home contexts. This study investigates the developmental trajectories of transcription and oral language skills in kindergarten students over the course of an academic year, with a focus on the influence of executive functions (EF) and home literacy practices (HLP). Hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) analyses revealed significant growth in transcription skills, with both EF and independent home literacy practices positively influencing baseline transcription scores. The interaction between independent home literacy practices and formal literacy practices at home further enhanced transcription skill development. In contrast, oral language skills were not influenced by either HLP or EF. These results suggest that EF plays a more prominent role in transcription development than oral language skills in early childhood, especially in transparent orthographic systems. The findings highlight the importance of cognitive and environmental factors in early literacy development, suggesting implications for educational practices, particularly in fostering effective home literacy environments Full article

Background/Objectives: Hope plays an important role in coping with difficulties and is predictive of resilience, improving the skills necessary to sustain life plans and well-being, and overcoming stressful situations in adulthood and especially in older age adults. We hypothesised that the dimensions of hope, including spirituality, are connected to personal, educational, and contextual conditions, and play a mediating role in fostering resilience and well-being after stressful events; this mediating role might differ in adulthood and among the elderly. Methods: The sample consisted of 100 adults without severe pathologies and living in their own homes, aged between 50 and 86 years (M = 66.08; SD = 8.48). They completed an online survey that included the Stress Event scale, the Comprehensive State Hope Scale, the Resilience Scale for Adults, and the Well-being Profile. The data were analysed using SPSS and JAMOVI software, applying the following statistical tests: t-test, ANOVA and mediational model. Results: Stressful events influence resilience and well-being differently in adulthood and old age, with non-significant differences due to gender and living conditions. Hope mediates between stress resulting from negative life events and resilience and well-being, but this mediation involves different hope components for adults (trust) and older adults (self-realisation and perception of social support in interpersonal relationships). Spirituality is a non-significant mediator in both age stages. Conclusions: Appropriate psychological and psychosocial supports are needed to enhance the mediating potential of hope between stressful events and resilience. The results of our study help clarify which components of hope specifically promote resilience in different conditions of normal old age, differentiating them from those more beneficial for adults. This study critically examines the structure, mechanisms, and enduring relevance of character education embedded in the indigenous knowledge systems of the Greater Horn of Africa. Pre-colonial African societies upheld sophisticated educational frameworks that emphasized holistic moral formation and communal character development, values that continue to influence rural communities today. Drawing on an integrative literature review, the paper identifies preparationism, functionalism, and communalism as core philosophical foundations shaping these systems. Moral and civic values were cultivated through informal, lifelong learning, guided by the collaborative roles of the home and community in fostering respect, responsibility, and social cohesion. Central pedagogical instruments included initiation rites, which provided structured moral instruction, and oral literature, which transmitted ethical reasoning and cultural wisdom. The findings underscore the continued relevance of indigenous character education in addressing contemporary societal challenges and advocate for Decolonizing the Mind as a pathway to revitalizing these traditions. The study concludes that reformed rites of passage, when purged of harmful elements, preserve cultural identity and strengthen communal ethics, offering a sustainable model for moral and civic education in modern Horn of African contexts. The dual Hukou system, originating in China’s planned economy period, structured Chinese society into separate urban and rural segments, thereby generating distinct sets of rights and benefits for agricultural and non-agricultural residents regarding land, social security, education, and healthcare. Urban home purchase is a pivotal indicator of social integration for rural–urban migrants in destination cities. While the literature has extensively examined migrants’ residential conditions in China, the institutional impact of the agricultural hukou system—a core constraint—on their urban homeownership, along with its underlying mechanisms and heterogeneity, remains underexplored. To address this gap, this study adopts a twofold approach: theoretically, it employs the separating equilibrium model in housing markets with incomplete information to verify that agricultural hukou acts as an institutional barrier to migrants’ local home purchases; empirically, it uses data from the China Migrants Dynamic Survey (CMDS) and applies the Fairlie decomposition method to quantify the constraint effect. The empirical results suggest that agricultural hukou exerts a 29.72% suppressive effect on migrants’ urban home purchase behavior. This effect operates indirectly by weakening migrants’ long-term settlement intention, which serves as a mediating variable. Moreover, the hindrance of agricultural hukou varies heterogeneously across groups, differing in education level, generational cohort, and regional distribution. To advance the fair and sustainable development of the real estate market, we advocate accelerating hukou reform by decoupling public services from residence status, fostering inclusive urbanization, and ensuring equitable development of housing markets. Young people in residential care settings hold distinct preferences regarding their relationships with key adults, including caseworkers and caregivers. However, their perspectives are not consistently assessed or effectively integrated into case planning. Evaluating this integration is essential for fostering positive adjustment and placement stability. Given that residential care represents the predominant child welfare intervention in Portugal, this study adapts and validates an existing instrument for use with youth in residential care institutions, providing evidence of its validity and reliability. Self-report questionnaires—the Positive Residential Care Integration (PRCI) scale (an adapted Positive Home Integration scale) and Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire—were administered to 511 youth (279 girls and 232 boys), aged 12 to 24 years, across 46 Portuguese residential care institutions. The study examined the face validity, discriminant validity, and reliability of the PRCI scale. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated good model fit, supporting a unidimensional six-item structure. Correlation analyses demonstrated associations with psychological adjustment and sociodemographic variables. The PRCI scale showed satisfactory psychometric properties, confirming its reliability for assessing youth integration in residential care. Cross-gender measurement invariance was also confirmed. These findings underscore the instrument’s relevance and validity for evaluating integration within residential settings and provide valuable guidance for caregivers, professionals, and caseworkers in child welfare services. Amid a policy mandate to foster national identity in Hong Kong’s early childhood education sector, this study explores the complex intersection of pedagogy, home–school collaboration, and technology integration. Navigating this value-laden topic depends fundamentally on a strong partnership between parents and educators, yet the rapid push for artificial intelligence (AI) creates additional pressures. This qualitative study investigates the shared and conflicting perspectives of these key stakeholders. Eight focus groups were conducted with 21 parents and 26 educators from four diverse Hong Kong kindergartens. Data were analyzed using a novel human–AI collaborative thematic analysis to ensure analytical depth and reliability. The findings reveal a paradoxical consensus: while parents and educators agree on an experiential, play-based pedagogy, they hold divergent views on the division of responsibility. A further misalignment exists in communication ideals, with parents prioritizing efficiency and educators prioritizing relational nuance. Critically, a technology paradox emerges, pitting parents’ aspirational hopes for AI against educators’ pragmatic concerns over inadequate resources, training, and pedagogical suitability. The study concludes that a significant perception gap strains the home–school partnership. Simply introducing technology without first addressing these foundational human and resource-based misalignments risks widening, rather than bridging, the divide, offering important lessons for education systems globally. Wartime Experiences of Single Parents by Choice

Background/Objectives: Despite extensive research on the outcomes faced by parents in contexts of political violence, as well as the protective factors that enhance their well-being, the experiences of single parents by choice (SPCs) in such circumstances have largely been neglected. This study sought to address this gap by examining the experiences of SPCs during the current phase of the Israel–Hamas war that began on 7 October 2023. Method: This qualitative study used a context-informed approach. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 Israeli SPCs (5 fathers and 6 mothers), including 2 displaced due to the destruction of their homes. All participants were secular Jews, predominantly middle- to upper-middle-class, aged 40–58, and had at least one child aged 15 months to 17 years. A thematic analysis method was utilized. Results: Two overarching themes emerged from the interviews, shaping participants’ wartime experiences: (1) the intensified challenges associated with parenting alone in the context of armed conflict and (2) the factors that mediated the impact of these challenges. Three key challenges identified by participants included: (1) persistent perceptions of danger and threat to life; (2) heightened financial insecurity; and (3) significant disruptions to daily routines. Three systemic-level protective factors were identified as instrumental in mitigating these challenges: (1) engagement in joint familial activities; (2) the presence of a supportive work environment; and (3) social and political engagement. These factors appeared to foster resilience and enhance participants’ psychological coping capacities amidst ongoing conflict. Conclusions: By highlighting the distinct stressors faced by SPCs in wartime and the factors mediating their impact on well-being, our findings extend the Stress Process Model to conflict settings, enhancing understanding of how single parenting is contextually shaped during major community crises. The findings may encourage clinicians and social workers to adopt a more nuanced approach when working with parents in conflict zones, enabling them to tailor interventions to the specific needs of different family structures. For SPCs, such interventions may include tele-counseling to provide psychosocial support and guidance for parents in supporting their children, without the need for childcare or travel, as well as advocacy for workplace policies that reduce financial and emotional vulnerabilities. An Evolutionary Game Analysis of CSR Governance in Multinational Enterprises Under External Stakeholder Monitoring

In the context of economic globalization, robust corporate social responsibility (CSR) serves as a critical source of legitimacy and competitive advantage for multinational enterprises (MNEs). However, institutional and competitive disparities between host and home countries frequently lead overseas subsidiaries of MNEs to deviate from parent company standards by substituting symbolic for substantive CSR practices and thereby creating potential threats to MNEs’ group-wide reputation. Although external stakeholder monitoring is widely recognized, most studies adopt static, dyadic perspectives and thus rarely examine the dynamic interplay between external monitoring and MNEs’ CSR governance. To address this gap, this study constructs a tripartite evolutionary game model involving the parent company, overseas subsidiaries, and external stakeholders, systematically analyzes the evolutionary pathways and the stability of their strategic interactions and uses numerical simulations to identify the conditions for system equilibriums and the influence of key parameters. The findings demonstrate that moderate incentives and penalties from the parent company and active monitoring by external stakeholders significantly promote overseas subsidiaries’ adoption of substantive CSR. This equilibrium becomes more stable when the benefits of substantive CSR increase or its costs decrease for overseas subsidiaries. However, excessive incentive expenditures may weaken the parent company’s willingness to implement strict supervision. Furthermore, information synergies and collaborative governance between the parent company and external stakeholders reduce cross-border supervision and coordination costs, thereby increasing the likelihood of an equilibrium with strict supervision and substantive CSR. By moving beyond conventional static and binary analytical frameworks, this study proposes governance pathways, including optimizing incentive mechanisms, strengthening external stakeholder monitoring, and fostering information synergies, thereby offering new theoretical perspectives and managerial implications for understanding the evolution of CSR behavior in MNEs. Yet, many healthcare facilities in sub-Saharan Africa face persistent WASH deficits, undermining safe and effective care delivery. Aim: To explore how water (in)accessibility influences patient healthcare experiences and patient–provider relationships in Yendi Hospital, a major referral facility in northern Ghana. Methods: Using a qualitative design, we gathered data from patients (n = 21), caregivers (n = 11), and nurses (n = 11) through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and a focus group to document their lived experiences and perceptions. We transcribed and inductively coded the data for thematic analysis. Results: Our key findings reveal that water inaccessibility is not solely an infrastructural issue but also a pervasive challenge with profound implications for care delivery. Patients and caregivers often leave the hospital to bathe at home, resulting in missed ward rounds, delayed reviews, and/or refusal of admission. Nurses described how water inaccessibility disrupted clinical routines and strained relationships with patients and caregivers. These dynamics eroded trust, rapport, and professional morale, while exacerbating inequities in healthcare access and outcomes. Conclusions: This study underscores that addressing water challenges in the hospital is imperative not only for infection control but also for fostering equity, patient rights, and institutional resilience. We argue that policy interventions to strengthen WASH systems are urgently required to advance progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 6. Full article

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the Internet of Things (IoT) has revolutionized industries, enabling smarter decision-making through real-time data analysis. However, the inherent complexity and opacity of many AI models pose significant challenges to trust, accountability, and safety in critical applications such as healthcare, industrial automation, and cybersecurity. Explainable AI (XAI) addresses these challenges by making AI-driven decisions transparent and interpretable, empowering users to understand, validate, and act on algorithmic outputs. This paper examines the pivotal role of XAI in IoT development, synthesizing advancements, challenges, and opportunities across domains. Key issues include the computational demands of XAI methods on resource-constrained IoT devices, the diversity of data types requiring adaptable explanation frameworks, and vulnerabilities to adversarial attacks that exploit transparency. By looking at healthcare IoT, predictive maintenance, and smart homes, we can see how XAI bridges the gap between complex algorithms and human-centric usability—for instance, clarifying medical diagnoses or justifying equipment failure alerts. We discuss multiple XAI implementations with IOT, such as lightweight XAI for edge devices and hybrid models combining rule-based logic with deep learning. This paper advocates for XAI as a cornerstone of trustworthy IoT ecosystems, ensuring transparency without compromising efficiency. As IoT continues to shape industries and daily life, XAI will remain essential to fostering accountability, safety, and public confidence in automated systems. Full article

As digital technologies become increasingly integrated into daily life, individuals with intellectual disabilities face both opportunities and risks in virtual environments. Despite widespread internet access and frequent use of digital devices among the general population, many individuals with disabilities continue to experience significant barriers to digital participation. These include difficulties in using technological tools, limited access to devices at home, and challenges in navigating online environments safely and independently. This study investigates the cybersecurity knowledge, risk perception, and privacy practices of 28 university students with mild intellectual disabilities in Spain. Utilizing a validated, accessible self-assessment questionnaire, the research analyzes participants’ understanding of digital threats, self-protective behaviors, and gender-based differences in knowledge and decision-making. Results reveal a generally high awareness of online risks and appropriate use of privacy settings, though inconsistencies in password security and high social media usage persist. Female participants demonstrated slightly higher levels of theoretical knowledge. The findings underscore the urgent need for inclusive, accessible cybersecurity education tailored to cognitive diversity. Promoting digital autonomy and safety through targeted interventions can reduce the digital divide and foster full social participation.
