Agricultural intensification has led to biodiversity loss and compromised ecosystem services, necessitating sustainable pest management strategies. This study evaluates the efficacy of wildflower strips (WFS) in enhancing natural enemy communities and suppressing pest activity in rice-wheat rotation landscapes of eastern China. An experiment compared WFS (10-species mixtures) with natural grass strips (CK) across biodiversity, functional traits, and pest dynamics. WFS significantly increased parasitic wasp α-diversity (species richness: +195.5%, activity density: +362.0%) and suppressed pest (Armadillidium vulgare) populations by 68%, primarily through female-biased sex ratios and functional trait shifts. Key species like Lindenius mesopleuralis and Ectemnius continuus emerged as indicators of WFS habitats. Spider communities showed no β-diversity differentiation but exhibited functional guild shifts (e.g., web-building specialists). Plant community composition, particularly floral resource availability and phenological continuity, drove natural enemy assembly and pest regulation, outperforming the CK group in rare species conservation. Our findings highlight WFS as a precision tool for enhancing pest control through targeted plant selection and trait-mediated interactions. This study advances the understanding of habitat-driven pest regulation, providing a framework for optimizing ecological intensification in agroecosystems. Full article

The invasive European green crab (Carcinus maenas) poses a significant ecological threat due to its rapid global spread and disruptive impact on coastal ecosystems. In the southwestern Atlantic, the northernmost population was recently recorded in the San Matías Gulf, offering a unique opportunity to study its demographic and life-history traits at the leading edge of its range. We assessed the sex ratio, population density, size distribution, and size at which 50% of females were ovigerous (SM50) in the intertidal zone. Our findings revealed a male-biased sex ratio (1.50 males per female) and low population density (0.42 crabs m−2), suggesting early-stage establishment. A size-structure analysis showed a well-structured population with clear cohort separation in both sexes and evidence of two recruitment events. The carapace width at which 50% of females were ovigerous was estimated at 61.48 mm. Although egg-bearing females exhibited a well-marked seasonality, with the highest prevalence from May to July, their presence nearly year-round suggests an extended reproductive period and adaptability to local conditions, which may be advantageous in recently established populations, facilitating invasion success. These traits, combined with the species’ ongoing range expansion, highlight the invasive potential of C. maenas and its possible ecological impacts on the San Matías Gulf. Full article

Reproductive interactions between species could have negative effects on the fitness of the species involved, which can have important ecological and evolutionary consequences, such as population declines (including local extinction) or character divergence. Here, we report the courtship and attempted mating between two congeneric species of fireflies endemic to Mexico. The interactions involved males of the synchronous firefly Photinus palaciosi and females of the much larger, non-synchronous P. extensus. In the study site, the population density of P. palaciosi is much higher than that of P. extensus. Observations of marked P. extensus females throughout most of the mating season showed that 37.8% of their interactions with males were with P. palaciosi males. Although interspecific interactions were usually of shorter length, they frequently consumed a significant portion of the nightly mate-locating/courting period. These interspecific interactions are probably facilitated by the similarities in the mate location and courtship behavior of both species, which also share female brachyptery (elytra and wing reduction that makes females unable to fly). The simplest hypothesis to explain our behavioral observations is that P. palaciosi males mistakenly courted P. extensus females. The available evidence suggests that the operational sex ratio (OSR) of P. palaciosi is male-biased, as it seems to be the case in all synchronous fireflies studied to date. We hypothesize that the intense male competition for mates resulting from a male-biased OSR explains, at least in part, the “indiscriminate” sexual responses of P. palaciosi males. Another still not studied factor that could contribute to the frequent interspecific sexual interactions observed is the degree of similitude of the mating signals. The relatively high frequency of interspecific interactions and the significant amount of time invested in many of them (relative to the duration of the nightly mating period) indicate that the study of the potential fitness costs (and benefits?) of these interactions is a promising line of research. Woodwasps (Siricidae and Xiphydriidae) inhabit living, weakened, or freshly dead trees and their larvae feed on sapwood. Siricidae have been intensively researched for pest management. In contrast, the ecology of Xiphydriidae remains largely unknown. In the present study, we collected xiphydriid woodwasp adults and dissected female adults to elucidate the cornerstone ecology of this family and compared these findings with those of siricid woodwasps. The findings provide new host records for these species and indicate that their host ranges span multiple families. Notably, all Xiphydria species had female-biased sex ratios. All adult females had gourd-shaped eggs, similar to those found in gall wasps (Cynipidae), which contrast with the oval-shaped eggs of Siricidae. Slit-like mycangia were located at the base of the ovipositor, with pairs of fungal masses composed of hyphal fragments or spores directly positioned below the seventh sternum, differing structurally from the pouch-like mycangia in Siricidae. Mucus reservoirs and secretory glands were found in the terminal abdominal segments, similar to Siricidae. Mucus in X. annulitibia and X. ogasawarai was colorless and transparent, as reported in Siricidae, whereas X. eborata exhibited deep wine-red mucus, which is the world’s first discovery in all dissected species of Siricidae and Xiphydriidae. Dioecious plants have different needs for natural resources due to sex differences, which can lead to skewed sex ratios. Clonal growth facilitates and optimizes resources of clonal plants. So, dioecious plants show inter-sex differences in clonality. However, it is unclear how the clonality varies between female and male plants when they exhibit skewed sex ratios along an altitudinal gradient. Here, we investigated the sex ratio and clonality of Hippophae tibetana populations growing at three altitudes in the alpine meadow. We founded that (i) H. tibetana growing at different altitudes mainly consisted of II and III age classes, with a significantly male-biased sex ratio observed at a low altitude, a female-biased ratio at a middle altitude, and no significant sex-bias in the population at a high altitude. (ii) The population distribution was generally random at both low and high altitudes, while clustered at middle altitudes with an increasing scale. Meanwhile, the male and female populations at a low altitude showed a negative correlation, while the male and female at a middle altitude only showed a negative correlation at a 0–0.5 m scale, and spatial independence with increasing scales. (iii) Females of H. tibetana had a strong clonal capacity than male plants at a middle altitude, while the opposite was observed at a low altitude. The number of males of H. tibetana growing at a low altitude and with higher clonal diversity were higher than females at mid altitude. Our findings will contribute to the understanding of the sexual dimorphism exhibited by dioecious plants as well as the importance of a clonal adaptation in response to environmental change. The conservation of the olive ridley turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) is increasingly critical due to declining global populations. This study investigates the influence of hydrometeorological conditions on the nesting season and annual hatchling sex ratios conducted at the Playón de Mismaloya Federal Reserve in Tomatlán, Jalisco, Mexico. The research specifically examines variations in sand temperature at both the beach surface and nesting depths, with extended measurements taken at multiple depths (20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 cm) to analyze the vertical temperature gradient along the beach. Atmospheric parameters were modeled using Newton’s Cooling Law and solved with the finite difference method to estimate heat loss rates from beach sand to its surroundings, shedding light on microclimatic effects on incubation and embryonic development. Meteorological data were gathered from an automatic weather station, while sand temperatures were monitored with thermographs. During the warm period (approximately 32 °C), sand temperature showed a negative correlation with depth (20–100 cm), indicating cooler temperatures at greater depths. These conditions were associated with female-biased hatchling production. Conversely, the cold period (approximately 28 °C) led to male-biased hatchling production, with a positive correlation between sand and air temperatures. This study emphasizes the importance of monitoring in situ environmental conditions and extending the protection season until February to avoid the loss of male hatchlings. Full article

The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of different compositions of poultry-based artificial diets on the biological and morphometric parameters of the almond moth, Ephestia cautella. Three artificial diets (ADs) were prepared, where the complete diet (AD1) consisted of a bird diet, poultry feed, brown wheat flour, glycerin, and brewer’s yeast. The other two tested diets were poultry-feed-deficient (AD2) and brewer’s yeast-deficient (AD3—control). The tested parameters were differences in the length and weight of eggs, larvae, and pupae, larval developmental duration, adult reproductive period, fecundity, and fertility. The results showed significant differences in larval developmental period, female longevity, life span, reproductive parameters, and morphometric measurements among the tested diets. The life span was distinctly longer (40.38 ± 0.81 days) when the larvae were reared on a poultry feed-deficient diet (AD2), while a shorter lifespan (29.93 ± 0.33 and 32.17 ± 0.61 days) was recorded when larvae were reared on a complete diet (AD1) and brewer’s yeast-deficient diet (AD3), respectively. The complete diet (AD1), composed of bird diet, poultry feed, brown wheat flour, glycerin, and brewer’s yeast with (2:2:2:1:1) ratios, resulted in the shortest larval and pupal duration and average life span, as well as the highest fertility percentage. The highest fecundity (eggs/female: 366.77 ± 9.61) was recorded on AD3, while fertility reached almost 100% on AD1. The sex ratio was recorded as equal for both diets AD1 and AD3, while a male-biased sex ratio was recorded for AD2. Similarly, the morphometric data showed increased weight and sizes of eggs, larvae, and pupae when provided with complete (AD1) and brewer’s yeast-deficient diets (AD3). The results signified the importance of poultry feed and brewer’s yeast in AD1 for the mass rearing of E. cautella. Full article

Background: Persistent symptoms have been reported in up to 50% of the 27 million people with mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) every year. MRI findings are currently limited by low diagnostic and prognostic sensitivities, constraining the value of imaging in the stratification of patients following mTBI. Limbic system structures are promising brain regions in offering prognostic factors for symptom persistence following mTBI. The objective of this study was to associate volume and symmetry of limbic system structures with the presence and persistence of common symptoms in patients with mTBI. Methods: This study focused on 524 adults (aged 18–82), 58% female, with 82% injured in motor vehicle accidents and 28% reporting loss of consciousness (LOC). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data included a sagittal 3D T1-weighted sequence with 1.2 mm slice thickness, with voxel sizes of 0.93 mm × 0.93 mm × 1.2 mm, obtained a median of 156 days after injury. Symptom diagnosis and persistence were collected retrospectively from patient medical records. Intracranial volume-adjusted regional volumes per side utilizing automated volumetric analysis (NeuroQuant®) were used to calculate total volume, laterality index, and side-independent asymmetry. Covariates included age, sex, LOC, and days from injury. Limbic volumetrics did not relate to symptom presentation, except the (-) association between headache presence and thalamus volume (adjusted odds ratio = 0.51, 95% confidence interval = 0.32, 0.85). Headache, balance problems, anxiety, and depression persistence was (-) associated with thalamus volume (hazard ratio (HR) 1.25 to 1.94). Longer persistence of balance problems was associated with (-) lateral orbitofrontal cortex volume (HR = 1.33) and (+) asymmetry of the hippocampus (HR = 0.27). Persistence of cognitive deficits was associated with (+) asymmetry in the caudal anterior cingulate (HR = 0.67). Depression persistence was associated with (+) asymmetry in the isthmus of the cingulate gyrus (HR = 5.39). Persistence of anxiety was associated with (-) volume of the parahippocampal gyrus (HR = 1.67), orbitofrontal cortex (HR > 1.97), and right-biased laterality of the entorhinal cortex (HR = 0.52). Conclusions: Relative volume and asymmetry of the limbic system structures in patients with mTBI are associated with the persistence of symptoms, particularly anxiety. The conclusions of this study are limited by the absence of a reference group with no mTBI. Full article

P. euphratica stands as the pioneering and dominant tree within desert riparian forests in arid and semi-arid regions. The aim of our work was to reveal why dioecious P. euphratica in natural desert riparian forests in the lower Tarim River exhibits sexual spatial distribution differences combined with field investigation, tree ring techniques, isotope analysis techniques, and statistical analyses. The results showed that P. euphratica was a male-biased population, with the operational sex ratio (OSR) exhibiting spatial distribution differences to variations in drought stress resulting from groundwater depth change. The highest OSR was observed under mild drought stress (groundwater depth of 6–7 m), and it was reduced under non-drought stress (groundwater depth below 6 m) or severe drought stress (groundwater depth exceeding 7 m). As drought stress escalated, the degradation and aging of the P. euphratica forest became more pronounced. Males exhibited significantly higher growth rates and WUEi than females under mild drought stress. However, under severe drought stress, males’ growth rates significantly slowed down, accompanied by significantly lower WUEi than in females. This divergence determined the sexual spatial segregation of P. euphratica in the natural desert riparian forests of the lower Tarim River. Furthermore, the current ecological water conveyance project (EWCP) in the lower Tarim River was hard to fundamentally reverse the degradation and aging of the P. euphratica forest due to inadequate population regeneration. Consequently, we advocated for an optimized ecological water conveyance mode to restore, conserve, and rejuvenate natural P. euphratica forests. Full article

Sex-determination is of particular importance in avian ecology and conservation. However, many bird species show no conspicuous sexual dimorphism, such as the La Selle Thrush, Turdus swalesi, a vulnerable species endemic to Hispaniola. We captured individuals in southeastern Haiti, in 2019–2022. For each one, we collected contour feathers or blood samples for molecular sex identification based on the CHD-1 gene. In addition, we took body measurements of several captured individuals and recorded their weight. Out of a total of 65 birds, 45 were identified as males and 20 as females, indicative of a significantly male-biased sex ratio. However, analyses of first captures showed that the sex ratio at our study site was male-biased only outside of the breeding season, suggesting that females may disperse at that time while males remain on their territories. Sexual dimorphism was limited to wing chord length and tail length, with males being larger than females. Tail length was the best predictor of sex in a logistic regression model and correctly classified about 80% of individuals as male or female. We discuss our results in relation to previous studies of sex ratio and sexual dimorphism in turdid species and address their relevance for the conservation of avian species in one of the major protected forest areas in Haiti. Gender control technologies are promising for enhancing the production efficiency of the farm animal industry, and preventing sex-linked hereditary diseases in humans. It has been shown that the X sperm of mammalian animals specifically expresses X-chromosome-derived toll-like receptor 7/8 (TLR7/8), and the activation of TLR7/8 on the X sperm by their agonist, R848, can separate X and Y sperm via the specific inhibition of X sperm motility. The use of R848-preselected sperm for fertilization resulted in sex-ratio-skewed embryos or offspring. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether two other TLR7/8 ligands, double-stranded RNA-40 (dsRNA-40) and double-stranded RNA-DR (dsRNA-DR), are also effective in the separation of mouse X and Y sperm and the subsequent generation of gender-ratio-skewed in vitro fertilization (IVF) embryos. Our results indicated that cholesterol modification significantly enhances the transfection of dsRNA-40 and dsRNA-DR into sperm cells. dsRNA-40 and dsRNA-DR incubation with mouse sperm could separate X and Y sperm by the specific suppression of X sperm motility by decreasing its ATP level and mitochondrial activity. The use of a dsRNA-40- or dsRNA-DR-preselected upper layer of sperm, which predominantly contains high-motility Y sperm, for IVF caused a male-biased sex ratio shift in resulting embryos (with 65.90–74.93% of embryos being male). This study develops a simple new method for the efficient separation of mammalian X and Y sperm, enabling the selective production of male or female progenies. Full article

The population parameters of the ecologically important mud shrimp Upogebia major (De Haan, 1841) were analyzed from 2012 to 2015 in tidal flats in Seonjaedo and Jugyo on the west coast of Korea. The shrimp density averaged 265/m2 in Seonjaedo and 118/m2 in Jugyo. The sex ratio varied monthly, often male-biased, and, by size, males were significantly dominant, with a carapace length (CL) over 30 mm. Although the shrimp settled almost annually, only a single size-group was observed from 2012 to 2014. The recruitment in Jugyo in 2014 was notably successful, resulting in two cohorts persisting until 2015. Many shrimp were parasitized at varying local rates: 6.0% in Seonjaedo and 37.1% in Jugyo. The growth curves revealed that the shrimp grew annually after settlement, reaching CLs of 11.90, 18.24, and 23.02 mm in Seonjaedo and 13.73, 20.86, and 25.82 mm in Jugyo. Annual mortality was 77.2% in Seonjaedo and 67.4% in Jugyo. The estimated lifespan (tmax) was 10 years in Seonjaedo and 8 years in Jugyo, whereas the 2010 cohort in Jugyo largely disappeared in 5 years. Ovigerous females appeared from November to June and benthic juveniles between June and September. The shrimps’ growth was slower relative to other East Asian populations, likely due to colder sea water temperatures and altered food conditions from a higher shrimp density. Full article

Dominance and leverage are both possible causes of social inequality. If sexual dimorphism influences patterns of intersexual dominance, we predicted that highly dimorphic species are constrained to exhibit male-biased power (MP), but species with low sexual dimorphism are free to demonstrate a broader range of intersexual power relationships. If market effects influence intersexual leverage, we predicted that females have more power when group composition is more male-biased and estrus is asynchronous. We analyzed data on intersexual power, sexual dimorphism, expected estrous overlap, and sex ratio for 79 extant primate species using phylogenetic logistic regression and ancestral state reconstructions. Although MP is more common, every major primate clade includes non-MP species. MP was associated with greater body mass and canine length dimorphism and with female-biased sex-ratios. Low estrous overlap was associated with non-MP. Although MP was reconstructed as likely ancestral for anthropoids, the last common ancestor of this clade probably did not exhibit high sexual dimorphism. The last common ancestor of catarrhines was probably highly dimorphic, potentially constraining intersexual power relationships. Non-MP probably evolved multiple times in primates and may be less common because multiple traits are linked to MP while fewer traits are associated with female-biased power or equality. Full article

Insects are renowned for their remarkable diversity of reproductive modes. Among these, the largest non-holometabolous order, Hemiptera, stands out with one of the most diversified arrays of parthenogenesis modes observed among insects. Although there are extensive reviews on reproduction without fertilization in some hemipteran higher taxa, no such analysis has been conducted for the large suborders Fulgoromorpha (planthoppers) and Cicadomorpha (leafhoppers). In both groups, there are species that reproduce by true parthenogenesis, specifically thelytoky, and in Fulgoromorpha, there are species that reproduce by pseudogamy or, more specifically, sperm-dependent parthenogenesis. In this review paper, we give and discuss the only currently known examples of true parthenogenesis in Fulgoromorpha and Cicadomorpha, mainly from the planthopper family Delphacidae and the leafhopper family Cicadellidae. We analyze patterns of distribution, ecology, mating behavior, acoustic communication, and cytogenetic and genetic diversity of parthenoforms and discuss hypotheses about the origin of parthenogenesis in each case. We also highlight examples in which natural populations show a shift in sex ratio toward females and discuss possible causes of this phenomenon, primarily the influence of endosymbiotic bacteria capable of altering the reproductive strategies of the hosts. Our review is mainly based on studies in which the authors have participated. Full article

Evaluation of the Predatory Mite Neoseiulus barkeri against Spider Mites Damaging Rubber Trees

The spider mites Eotetranychus sexmaculatus, Eutetranychus orientalis and Oligonychus biharensisin are severe pests of rubber trees in China. The predatory mite Neoseiulus barkeri has been found to be a natural enemy of these three pests, while nothing is known about the biological performance of this phytoseiid predator against these phytophagous mites. In this study, the development, survivorship, reproduction, adult longevity, fecundity, sex ratio and population growth parameters of N. barkeri fed on these pests were evaluated in comparison to the factitious prey Tyrophagus putrescentiae in the laboratory at 25 ± 1 °C, 75 ± 5% relative humidity and a 12:12 (L:D) h photoperiod. The results showed that N. barkeri could develop from egg to adult and reproduced successfully on the three preys. The survival rate of N. barkeri from egg to adult was higher when fed on E. orientalis (100%) and T. putrescentiae (100%) than when fed on O. biharensisin (93.60%) and E. sexmaculatus (71.42%). The shortest and longest generation time for N. barkeri were observed on E. orientalis with 6.67 d and E. sexmaculatus with 12.50 d, respectively. The maximum fecundity (29.35 eggs per female) and highest intrinsic rate of increase (rm = 0.226) were recorded when N. barkeri fed on E. orientalis, while feeding on E. sexmaculatus gave the minimum fecundity (1.87 eggs per female) and lowest reproduction rate (rm = 0.041). The values of these parameters for N. barkeri evaluated on O. biharensisin were found to be comparable to those obtained on T. putrescentiae. The sex ratio of N. barkeri progeny on the preys mentioned above, apart from O. biharensisin, was female biased. According to the findings, N. barkeri could serve as a promising biocontrol agent against E. orientalis and O. biharensisin, and possibly E. sexmaculatus on rubber trees. Full article
