This study evaluated the effect of various adhesive systems, particularly silane application, on the repair bond strength of a nanofill resin composite and associated stress distribution using finite element analysis (FEA). A total of 105 composite specimens (4 × 6 mm) were aged by thermal cycling (10,000 cycles), roughened, etched with phosphoric acid, and assigned to seven groups (n = 15): G1. control—no adhesive; G2. Single Bond Universal Adhesive; G3. composite primer; G4. PQ1; G5. Silane + PQ1; G6. Clearfil Universal Bond; G7. All-Bond Universal. Shear bond strength was measured using a universal testing machine (1 mm/min), and failure modes were microscopically classified. FEA was conducted under static and fatigue conditions using 3D models built in Fusion-360. Mechanical properties were obtained from technical data and the literature. A 300 N load was applied and contact detection (0.05 mm) and constraint zones were defined. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey’s HSD (p = 0.05). Pearson’s correlation was used to assess the relationship between bond strength and von Mises stress. The highest bond strength was found in G2 (21.54 MPa) while G1 showed the lowest (8.86 MPa). Silane-treated groups exhibited favorable stress distribution and a strong correlation between experimental and simulated outcomes. Silane applications significantly enhance composite repair performance. Full article

Grain boundary weakening in high-temperature environments significantly influences the fatigue crack growth mechanisms of nickel-based superalloys, introducing challenges in accurately predicting fatigue life. In this study, a dislocation-density-based crystal plasticity phase-field (CP–PF) model is developed to simulate the fatigue crack growth behavior of the GH4169 alloy under both room and elevated temperatures. Grain boundaries are explicitly modeled, enabling the competition between transgranular and intergranular cracking to be accurately captured. The grain boundary separation energy and surface energy, calculated via molecular dynamics simulations, are employed as failure criteria for grain boundary and intragranular material points, respectively. The simulation results reveal that under oxygen-free conditions, fatigue crack propagation at both room and high temperatures is governed by sustained shear slip, with crack advancement hindered by grains exhibiting low Schmid factors. When grain boundary oxidation is introduced, increasing oxidation levels progressively degrade grain boundary strength and reduce overall fatigue resistance. Specifically, at room temperature, oxidation shortens the duration of crack arrest near grain boundaries. At elevated service temperatures, intensified grain boundary degradation facilitates a transition in crack growth mode from transgranular to intergranular, thereby accelerating crack propagation and exacerbating fatigue damage. The use of adhesive joints in naval applications requires a thorough understanding of their fatigue performance. This paper reports on the fatigue experiments performed on double cantilever beam specimens with thick adhesive bondline manufactured under shipyard conditions. The specimens have an initial crack at the steel–adhesive interface and are tested in unaged, salt-spray-aged and immersion-aged conditions to determine the interface mode I fatigue properties. The strain energy release rate is calculated using the Kanninen–Penado model, and the fatigue crack growth curve is determined using a power law model. The crack growth rate slope for salt-spray-aged specimens is 16.5% lower than for unaged specimens, while that for immersion-aged specimens is 66.1% lower and is shown to be significantly different. The fracture surfaces are analyzed to identify the failure mechanisms and the influence of the aging process on the interface properties. Since the specimens are manufactured under shipyard conditions, the presence of voids and discontinuities in the adhesive bondline is observed and as a result leads to scatter. Hence, Bayesian linear regression is performed in addition to the ordinary least squares regression to account for the scatter and provide a distribution of plausible values for the power law coefficients. The results highlight the impact of aging on the fatigue property, underscoring the importance of considering environmental effects in the qualification of such joints for marine applications. Dynamic vibration absorbers (DVAs), serving as passive control devices, demonstrate remarkable efficacy in mitigating structural vibrations across engineering applications. This study systematically investigates the design of DVAs for vibration suppression of a cantilevered plate through integrated theoretical modeling, parameter optimization, structural implementation, and experimental validation. Key methodologies encompass receptance coupling substructure analysis (RCSA) for system dynamics characterization and H∞ optimization for absorber parameter identification. Experimental results reveal 74.2–85.7% vibration amplitude reduction in target mode, validating the proposed design framework. Challenges pertaining to boundary condition uncertainties and manufacturing tolerances are critically discussed, providing insights for practical implementations. Full article

Additive Manufacturing (AM) techniques, such as Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) and Stereolithography (SLA), are increasingly adopted in various high-demand sectors, including the aerospace, biomedical engineering, and automotive industries, due to their design flexibility and material adaptability. However, the tribological performance and surface integrity of parts manufactured by AM are the biggest functional deployment challenges, especially in wear susceptibility or load-carrying applications. The current review provides a comprehensive overview of the tribological challenges and surface engineering solutions inherent in FDM and SLA processes. The overview begins with a comparative overview of material systems, process mechanics, and failure modes, highlighting prevalent wear mechanisms, such as abrasion, adhesion, fatigue, and delamination. The effect of influential factors (layer thickness, raster direction, infill density, resin curing) on wear behavior and surface integrity is critically evaluated. Novel post-processing techniques, such as vapor smoothing, thermal annealing, laser polishing, and thin-film coating, are discussed for their potential to endow surface durability and reduce friction coefficients. Hybrid manufacturing potential, where subtractive operations (e.g., rolling, peening) are integrated with AM, is highlighted as a path to functionally graded, high-performance surfaces. Further, the review highlights the growing use of finite element modeling, digital twins, and machine learning algorithms for predictive control of tribological performance at AM parts. Through material-level innovations, process optimization, and surface treatment techniques integration, the article provides actionable guidelines for researchers and engineers aiming at performance improvement of FDM and SLA-manufactured parts. Future directions, such as smart tribological, sustainable materials, and AI-based process design, are highlighted to drive the transition of AM from prototyping to end-use applications in high-demand industries. Wheel polygonal wear of metro deteriorates the vibration environment of the vehicle system, potentially leading to resonance-induced fatigue failure of components. This poses serious risks to operational safety and increases maintenance costs. To address the adverse effects of wheel polygonal wear, dynamic tracking tests and numerical simulations were conducted. The modal analysis focused on the vehicle–track coupling system, incorporating various track structures to explore the formation mechanisms and key influencing factors of polygonization. Test results revealed dominant polygonal wear patterns of the seventh to ninth order, inducing forced vibrations in the 50–70 Hz frequency range. These frequencies closely match the P2 resonance frequency generated by wheel–rail interaction. When vehicle–track coupling is considered, the track’s frequency response shows multiple peaks within this range, indicating susceptibility to resonance excitation. Additionally, rail joint irregularities act as geometric excitation sources that trigger polygonal development, while the P2 force resonance mode plays a critical role in its amplification. Thermoplastic carbon fiber/aluminum alloy hybrid composite laminates fully integrate the advantages of fiber-reinforced composites and metallic materials, exhibiting high fatigue resistance and impact resistance, with broad applications in fields such as national defense, aerospace, automotive engineering, and marine engineering. In this paper, thermoplastic carbon fiber/aluminum alloy hybrid composite laminates were first prepared using a hot-press machine; then, high-velocity impact tests were conducted on the specimens using a first-stage light gas gun test system. Comparative experimental analyses were performed to evaluate the energy absorption performance of laminates with different ply thicknesses and layup configurations. High-speed cameras and finite element analysis software were employed to analyze the failure process and modes of the laminates under impact loading. The results demonstrate that fiber–metal laminates exhibit higher specific energy absorption than carbon fiber composite laminates. Meanwhile, the numerical simulation results can effectively reflect the experimental outcomes in terms of the velocity–time relationship, failure modes during the laminate impact process, and failure patterns after the laminate impact. Recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) containing recycled rubber gains increasing attention for reinforced concrete structures, owing to its benefits in resource-saving and environmental protection. Bonding between rebars and concrete is critical to ensure the composite action in reinforced concrete members. Nevertheless, previous studies on such concrete mainly focused on material aspects. Bonding behavior for rubber RAC is not clear and needs further research. This study aims to clarify the effects of recycled aggregate and rubber on the monotonic and fatigue bond behavior of deformed steel rebar in concrete and to propose predictive models. Pullout tests under monotonic, fatigue, and post-fatigue monotonic loadings are conducted on a total of 21 monotonic and 30 fatigue specimens, including normal concrete, RAC, and rubber RAC. Four types of failure modes are identified for the tested specimens. Effects of the replacement rate of recycled aggregate, rubber, and load level on the fatigue behavior, such as fatigue life, slip-loading cycle curves, slip development, and residual bond strength, are investigated. With the addition of recycled aggregate and rubber, the monotonic bond strength is increased by 60%. Based on the experimental results, theoretical formulas are proposed to predict the monotonic bond strength, fatigue life, and the slip under fatigue loading. The predictive models are verified by the experimental results, for example, the average and COV of the predicted-to-experimental bond strength ratio are 1.0 and 0.11, which proves the reasonability of the proposed models. To investigate the mechanical behavior and damage mechanism of notch–stud connectors in timber–concrete composites under fatigue loading, fifteen push-out specimens in five groups were designed with load cycles as the key variable. Fatigue failure modes and mechanisms were analyzed to examine fatigue life, stiffness degradation, and cumulative damage laws of connectors. Numerical simulations with up to 100 load cycles explored timber/concrete damage effects on stud fatigue performance. Based on the results, an S-N curve was established, a fatigue damage model developed, and a fatigue design method proposed for such connectors. Primary failure modes were stud fracture and local concrete crushing in notches. Stiffness degradation followed an inverted “S”-shaped “fast–slow–fast” pattern. Using residual slip as the damage variable, a two-stage fatigue damage evolution model was constructed from the damage–cycle ratio relationship, offering a new method for shear connector fatigue damage calculation in timber–concrete composites and enabling remaining life prediction for similar composite beam connectors. Finite element simulations of push-out specimens showed high consistency between calculated and experimental fatigue life/damage results, validating the conclusions. Full article

This paper investigates the effect of mean shear stress on short-beam shear fatigue in a GLARE 1-3/2 commercial fiber–metal laminate (FML). This study explores three shear stress ratios (Rτ 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5) and two material orientations (longitudinal and transversal) under constant amplitude fatigue. Different stress levels for each Rτ value were explored to obtain failures between 103 and 106 load cycles. The experimental results reveal anisotropy, with transversal specimens exhibiting lower performance and increased scatter. The mean shear stress effect is discussed herein, with insights into the critical role of mean shear of fatigue performance. Rτ 0.1 was the most severe condition and Rτ 0.5 was the least severe. The Rτ 0.3 condition produced steeper S-N curves, indicating that the combined effect of mean shear stress and shear stress amplitude led to a higher rate of damage accumulation. The fractographic analysis investigated the failure modes and confirmed the damage dominated by Mode II, supporting the test methodology employed. Full article

Cu matrix composites, because of their high mechanical strength, are often used as conductors in high-performance electrical applications. These composites are manufactured through thermomechanical processing, which introduces a high density of particles that act as obstacles to dislocation motion. Increasing the density of these particles enhances the mechanical strength of the conductors, which we tested under static loading. Under cyclic loading, especially pulsed electrical mechanical loading, conductors may soften, harden, or even fail. Failure is likely to occur whenever the applied stress exceeds the flow stress of the conductors. Understanding and predicting the performance of conductors under cyclic loading can help researchers estimate the lifespan of any apparatus made from these conductors. The performance of conductors depends on whether the strengthening particles are characterized by ionic interatomic bonding or metallic bonding. During fabrication, we observed both the accumulation of dislocations and the dissolution of particles (which added more solute atoms to the matrix). Because both dislocations and solute atoms tend to migrate at room temperature or higher, the complexity of microstructure changes increases in composites under cyclic loading. To minimize such complexity, we designed our test to determine fatigue properties at 77 K. We subjected the conductors to cyclic fatigue tests using a load-controlled mode (the mode most commonly used in applications). This work sheds light on the correlation between tensile properties and fatigue properties in our composite conductors. We found that the correlation varied, depending on whether the conductors had been strengthened by ionic bond or metallic bond particles. Full article

Multimodal freight transport systems, integrating maritime, rail, and road modes, play a vital role in modern logistics but face elevated operational, human, and environmental risks due to their complexity and interdependencies. To address the limitations of conventional risk assessment methods, this study proposes a hybrid risk modeling framework that integrates fault tree analysis (FTA), dynamic fault trees (DFTs), and fuzzy logic reasoning. This approach supports the modeling of sequential failures and captures qualitative uncertainties such as human fatigue and inadequate training. The framework incorporates reliability metrics, including Mean Time to Failure (MTTF) and Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF), enabling the quantification of system resilience and identification of critical failure pathways. Application of the model revealed human error, particularly procedural violations, insufficient training, and fatigue, as the dominant risk factor across transport modes. Road transport exhibited the highest probability of risk occurrence (p = 0.9960), followed by rail (p = 0.9937) and maritime (p = 0.9900). By integrating probabilistic reasoning with qualitative insights, the proposed model offers a flexible decision support tool for logistics operators and policymakers, enabling scenario-based risk planning and enhancing system robustness under uncertainty. The presence of mixed-mode stresses, combining both opening and shearing components, complicates fatigue life estimation when applying the Paris law. To address this, the crack path, along with Mode-I (opening) and Mode-II (shear) components, was numerically analyzed using Fracture Analysis Code (Franc2D) based on the linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) approach. Accordingly, fatigue life and stress intensity factors (SIFs) under various biaxial loading ratios (λ) were calculated using the Paris law and compared with available data in the literature. The results show that crack growth is primarily driven by the Mode-I component, which exhibits the largest magnitude. Thus, the Mode-I stress intensity factor (KI) was adopted for the numerical integration of the fatigue life equation. Furthermore, the influence of normal and transverse loads (σy and σx, respectively) on the crack path plane and SIF was examined for λ. The analysis revealed that lower λ values led to faster crack propagation, while higher λ values resulted in extended fatigue life due to an increased number of cycles to failure. The comparison demonstrated good agreement with reference data, confirming the reliability of the proposed modeling approach over a wide range of biaxial loading conditions. Full article

Wear particle analysis, which identifies failure modes caused by the wear of various machine components, is an essential technique for monitoring machinery conditions. This analysis plays a vital role in predictive maintenance by revealing component degradation in machinery. This study proposes an automated framework to classify four standard wear particle textures—rough, striated, pitted, and fatigued—using artificial neural networks (ANNs) combined with advanced image processing techniques. Images acquired via Charged-Coupled Device (CCD) microscopy were preprocessed using sharpening, histogram stretching, and four edge detection algorithms: Sobel, Laplacian, Boie–Cox, and Canny. The Laplacian and Canny methods yielded the highest classification accuracies of 97.9% and 98.9%, respectively. By minimizing human subjectivity, this automated approach enhances diagnostic consistency and represents a scalable solution for industrial condition monitoring. Full article

Three all-steel buckling-restrained brace (ABRB) specimens without unbonded materials were designed and manufactured. Through low-cycle reciprocating load tests, the seismic performance of these buckling-restrained braces was investigated, and the influence of the absence of an unbonded layer on failure modes, energy dissipation capacity, and low-cycle fatigue life was examined. The research findings suggest that in all-steel buckling-restrained braces lacking an unbonded layer, the excessive friction between the energy dissipation unit and the restraining unit can, to a certain degree, increase local compressive stress. This makes the braces more susceptible to local buckling at the ends. The frictional effect causes the axial force of the ABRB to follow a distribution pattern where it is greater at the ends and smaller in the middle. Correspondingly, the buckling wavelength of the energy dissipation unit shows a pattern of being shorter at the ends and longer in the middle, which also results in a significant cyclic hardening phenomenon in the ABRB. The fatigue performance of the ABRB is inversely related to the amplitude of local buckling in the energy dissipation unit. Full article
