Metro carriages, as enclosed transport microenvironments, have been understudied regarding pollution characteristics and health risks from ACs, especially during high-temperature summers that amplify exposure. This study applied NTS techniques for the first time across three major Chengdu metro lines, systematically identifying sixteen ACs, including hazardous species such as acetophenone, benzonitrile, and benzoic acid that are often overlooked in conventional BTEX-focused monitoring. The TAC concentration reached 41.40 ± 5.20 µg/m3, with half of the compounds exhibiting significant increases during peak commuting periods. Source apportionment using diagnostic ratios and PMF identified five major contributors: carriage material emissions (36.62%), human sources (22.50%), traffic exhaust infiltration (16.67%), organic solvents (16.55%), and industrial emissions (7.66%). Although both non-cancer (HI) and cancer (TCR) risks for all population groups were below international thresholds, summer tourists experienced higher exposure than daily commuters. Notably, child tourists showed the greatest vulnerability, with a TCR of 5.83 × 10−7, far exceeding that of commuting children (1.88 × 10−7). Benzene was the dominant contributor, accounting for over 50% of HI and 70% of TCR. This study presents the first integrated NTS and quantitative risk assessment to characterise ACs in summer metro environments, revealing a broader range of hazardous compounds beyond BTEX. It quantifies population-specific risks, highlights children’s heightened vulnerability. The findings fill critical gaps in ACs exposure and provide a scientific basis for improved air quality management and pollution mitigation strategies in urban rail transit systems. Full article

Although particulate matter (PM) pollution from vehicles’ exhaust has decreased significantly over the years, the contribution from non-exhaust sources (brakes, tyres) has remained at the same levels. In the European Union (EU), Euro 7 regulation introduced PM limits for vehicles’ brake systems. Regenerative braking, i.e., recuperation of the deceleration kinetic and potential energy to the vehicle battery, is one of the strategies to reduce the brake emission levels and improve vehicle efficiency. According to the regulation, the shares of friction and regenerative braking can be determined with actual testing of the vehicle on a chassis dynamometer. In this study we tested the regenerative capabilities of a plug-in hybrid vehicle, both in the laboratory and on the road, under different protocols (including both smooth and aggressive braking) and covering a wide range of driving conditions (urban, rural, motorway) over 10,000 km of driving. Good agreement was obtained between laboratory and on-road tests, with the use of the friction brakes being on average 7% and 5.3%, respectively. However, at the same time it was demonstrated that the friction braking share can vary over a wide range (up to around 30%), depending on the driver’s behaviour. Full article

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a major toxic gas emitted from vehicle exhaust, industrial processes, and incomplete fuel combustion, posing serious environmental and health risks. Catalytic oxidation of CO into less harmful CO2 is an effective strategy to reduce these emissions. In this study, we investigated the catalytic performance of platinum (Pt) single atoms doped on C3N monolayers with various vacancy defects, including single carbon (CV) and nitrogen (NV) vacancies, using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Our results demonstrate that Pt@NV-C3N exhibited the most favorable catalytic properties, with the highest O2 adsorption energy (−3.07 eV). This performance significantly outperforms Pt atoms doped at other vacancies. It can be attributed to the strong binding between Pt and nitrogen vacancies, which contributes to its excellent resistance to Pt aggregation. CO oxidation on Pt@NV-C3N proceeds via the Eley–Rideal (ER2) mechanism with a low activation barrier of 0.41 eV for the rate-determining step, indicating high catalytic efficiency at low temperatures. These findings suggest that Pt@NV-C3N is a promising candidate for CO oxidation, contributing to developing cost-effective and environmentally sustainable catalysts. The strong binding of Pt atoms to the nitrogen vacancies prevents aggregation, ensuring the stability and durability of the catalyst. The kinetic modeling further revealed that the ER2 mechanism offers the highest reaction rate constants over a wide temperature range (273–700 K). The low activation energy barrier also facilitates CO oxidation at lower temperatures, addressing critical challenges in automotive and industrial pollution control. This study provides valuable theoretical insights for designing advanced single-atom catalysts for environmental remediation applications. Full article

In response to increasingly stringent emission regulations, low-carbon fuels have received significant attention as sustainable energy sources for internal combustion engines. This study investigates four representative low-carbon fuels, methane, methanol, hydrogen, and ammonia, by systematically summarizing their combustion characteristics and emission profiles, along with a review of existing after-treatment technologies tailored to each fuel type. For methane engines, unburned hydrocarbon (UHC) produced during low-temperature combustion exhibits poor oxidation reactivity, necessitating integration of oxidation strategies such as diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), particulate oxidation catalyst (POC), ozone-assisted oxidation, and zoned catalyst coatings to improve purification efficiency. Methanol combustion under low-temperature conditions tends to produce formaldehyde and other UHCs. Due to the lack of dedicated after-treatment systems, pollutant control currently relies on general-purpose catalysts such as three-way catalyst (TWC), DOC, and POC. Although hydrogen combustion is carbon-free, its high combustion temperature often leads to elevated nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, requiring a combination of optimized hydrogen supply strategies and selective catalytic reduction (SCR)-based denitrification systems. Similarly, while ammonia offers carbon-free combustion and benefits from easier storage and transportation, its practical application is hindered by several challenges, including low ignitability, high toxicity, and notable NOx emissions compared to conventional fuels. Current exhaust treatment for ammonia-fueled engines primarily depends on SCR, selective catalytic reduction-coated diesel particulate filter (SDPF). Emerging NOx purification technologies, such as integrated NOx reduction via hydrogen or ammonia fuel utilization, still face challenges of stability and narrow effective temperatures. Full article

Decoding the Primacy of Transportation Emissions of Formaldehyde Pollution in an Urban Atmosphere

Understanding the differential impacts of emission sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on formaldehyde (HCHO) levels is pivotal to effectively mitigating key photochemical radical precursors, thereby enhancing the regulation of atmospheric oxidation capacity (AOC) and ozone formation. This investigation systematically selected and analyzed year-long VOC measurements across three urban zones in Shenzhen, China. Photochemical age correction methods were implemented to develop the initial concentrations of VOCs before source apportionment; then Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) modeling resolved six primary sources: solvent usage (28.6–47.9%), vehicle exhaust (24.2–31.2%), biogenic emission (13.8–18.1%), natural gas (8.5–16.3%), gasoline evaporation (3.2–8.9%), and biomass burning (0.3–2.4%). A machine learning (ML) framework incorporating Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) was subsequently applied to evaluate the influence of six emission sources on HCHO concentrations while accounting for reaction time adjustments. This machine learning-driven nonlinear analysis demonstrated that vehicle exhaust nearly always emerged as the primary anthropogenic contributor in diverse functional zones and different seasons, with gasoline evaporation as another key contributor, while the traditional reactivity metric method, ozone formation potential (OFP), tended to underestimate the role of the two sources. This study highlights the primacy of strengthening emission reduction of transportation sectors to mitigate HCHO pollution in megacities. Full article

Combustion of aviation jet fuel emits a complex mixture of pollutants linked to adverse health outcomes among airport personnel and nearby communities. While epidemiological studies showed the detrimental effects of aviation-derived air pollutants on human health, the molecular mechanisms of the interactions of these pollutants with cellular biomolecules like proteins that drive the adverse health effects remain poorly understood. In this study, we performed molecular docking simulations of 272 pollutant–protein complexes using AutoDock Vina 1.2.7 to characterize the binding strength of the pollutants with the selected proteins. We selected 34 aviation-derived pollutants that constitute three chemical categories of pollutants: volatile organic compounds (VOCs), polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and organophosphate esters (OPEs). Each pollutant was docked to eight proteins that play critical roles in endocrine, metabolic, transport, and neurophysiological functions, where functional disruption is implicated in disease. The effect of binding of multiple pollutants was analyzed. Our results indicate that aliphatic and monoaromatic VOCs display low (<6 kcal/mol) binding affinities while PAHs and organophosphate esters exhibit strong (>7 kcal/mol) binding affinities. Furthermore, the binding strength of PAHs exhibits a positive correlation with the increasing number of aromatic rings in the pollutants, ranging from nearly 7 kcal/mol for two aromatic rings to more than 15 kcal/mol for five aromatic rings. Analysis of intermolecular interactions showed that these interactions are predominantly stabilized by hydrophobic, pi-stacking, and hydrogen bonding interactions. Simultaneous docking of multiple pollutants revealed the increased binding strength of the resulting complexes, highlighting the detrimental effect of exposure to pollutant mixtures found in ambient air near airports. We provide a priority list of pollutants that regulatory authorities can use to further develop targeted mitigation strategies to protect the vulnerable personnel and communities near airports. Global warming raises surface water temperatures, impacting fish alongside pollutants, such as ubiquitous xenoestrogens. Combined stressor effects are poorly studied but likely to worsen impacts and hinder biota adaptation, warranting further research. Unadapted fish face heightened risks. The liver is a vital metabolic organ, sensitive to temperature and xenoestrogens, eventually adjusting hepatocyte size and number to ensure survival, growth, and reproduction. This study assessed, for the first time, the impact of exposure (45 days) to thermal stress (29 °C versus 26 °C) and ethinylestradiol (EE2, 5 ng/L) on male guppies, primarily on body and quantitative liver morphology. Higher temperature reduced body mass (14%) and standard length (3.6%) gain. EE2 exposure reduced body mass increase (14%), hepatosomatic index (20%), and the volumes of the liver (32%), hepatocytes (16%), and their nuclei (17%). The nucleus-to-cytoplasm ratio and total hepatocyte number remained stable. No histopathological lesions existed. Guppies appear to have adapted to stressors by reducing hepatocyte size and utilizing lipid reserves, yet they exhibited deficits in body growth and hepatosomatic index. Gonadal maturation was unaffected. Only under EE2 at 29 °C did hepatocytes show minimal lipid droplet content (less vacuolation). This indicated exhausted reserves, reinforcing how heat and toxicants interact to exacerbate impacts. Full article

Ambient PM concentrations are influenced by various emission sources and weather conditions such as temperature, wind speed, and direction. Measurements using optical sensors cannot directly link pollution levels to specific sources. Data from roadside monitoring often show that a significant portion of PM originates from non-traffic sources. Therefore, vehicle-related PM emissions are typically estimated using simulation models based on average emission factors. This study uses the COPERT (Computer Programme to Calculate Emissions from Road Transport) model to estimate emissions from road vehicles under current conditions and future scenarios. These include the introduction of Euro 7 standards and a shift from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to battery electric vehicles (BEVs). The analysis considers exhaust and non-exhaust emissions, as well as indirect emissions from electricity generation for BEV charging. The conducted study showed, among other findings, that replacing internal combustion engine vehicles with electric ones could reduce PM2.5 emissions by approximately 6% (2% when including indirect emissions from electricity generation) and PM10 emissions by about 10% (5% with indirect emissions), compared to the Euro 7 scenario. The increasing levels of ozone pollution have become a significant environmental issue in urban areas worldwide. Previous studies have confirmed that the urban ozone pollution in China is mainly controlled by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) rather than nitrogen oxides. Therefore, a study on the emission characteristics and source analysis of VOCs is important for controlling urban ozone pollution. In this study, hourly concentrations of 57 VOC species in four groups were obtained in April 2022, a period of high ozone pollution in Kunming, China. The ozone formation potential analysis showed that the accumulated reactive VOCs significantly contributed to the subsequent ozone formation, particularly aromatics (44.16%) and alkanes (32.46%). In addition, the ozone production rate in Kunming is mainly controlled by VOCs based on the results of the empirical kinetic modeling approach (KNOx/KVOCs = 0.25). The hybrid single-particle Lagrangian integrated trajectory model and polar coordinate diagram showed high VOC and ozone concentrations from the southwest outside the province (50.28%) and the south in local areas (12.78%). Six factors were obtained from the positive matrix factorization model: vehicle exhaust (31.80%), liquefied petroleum gas usage (24.16%), the petrochemical industry (17.81%), fuel evaporation (11.79%), coal burning (7.47%), and solvent usage (6.97%). These findings underscore that reducing anthropogenic VOC emissions and strengthening controls on the related sources could provide a scientifically robust strategy for mitigating ozone pollution in Kunming. It is evident that a novel engineering solution is required in order to elevate a greater number of polluting cars into a higher category. There appears to be a paucity of direct interest in upgrading Euro 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 vehicles to the highest possible level, primarily through software modifications of the parameters determining the performance of the internal combustion engine (ICE). The potential for advancement in this area is evidenced by the presence of systems that enhance environmental efficiency, even in Euro 2 vehicles. These include exhaust gas recirculation, catalytic converter, lambda sensor, electronic control fuel injection, and ignition timing. It is precisely these vehicles that are subject to optimization, a process which would allow the maximum service life of otherwise more reliable but older vehicles to be exploited. Full article

In recent decades, environmental requirements for reducing the toxic components emitted from vehicle exhausts have decreased drastically. Technologies for after-treatment of diesel vehicle emissions are being improved continuously in order to meet increasingly stringent regulations. Passenger cars are a significant source of air pollution, especially in urban areas. The EU has decided to phase out internal combustion engines. Stricter Real Driving Emissions (RDE) testing procedures have also been introduced, aiming to assess the emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particle number (PN). The present work investigates the interaction between performance and smoke emissions of a diesel vehicle on a pre-established route in an urban environment with an everyday (normal) driving style. The results showed that when the vehicle is technically sound and meets its technical specifications, smoke emissions are within normal limits. Full article

The impact of black carbon (BC) emissions on climate change, human health, and the environment is well-documented in the scientific literature. Although BC still remains largely unregulated at the international level, efforts have been made to reduce emissions of BC and Particulate Matter (PM2.5), particularly in sectors such as energy production, industry, and road transport. In contrast, the maritime shipping industry has made limited progress in reducing BC emissions from ships, mainly due to the absence of stringent BC emission regulations. While the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has established emission limits for pollutants such as SOx, NOx, and VOCs under MARPOL Annex VI, as of today, BC emissions from ships are still unregulated at the international level. Whereas it was anticipated that PM2.5 and BC emissions would be reduced with the adoption of the SOx regulations, especially within the sulfur emission control areas (SECA), this study reveals that BC emissions are only partially affected by the current MARPOL Annex VI regulations. Based on 886 real-world black carbon (BC) emission measurements from ships operating in the southern North Sea, the study demonstrates that SECA-compliant fuels do contribute to a notable decrease in BC emissions. However, it is important to note that the average BC emission factors (EFs) within the SECA remain comparable in magnitude to those reported for non-compliant fuels in earlier studies. Moreover, ships using exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCSs) as a SECA-compliant measure were found to emit significantly higher levels of BC, raising concerns about the environmental sustainability of EGCSs as an emissions mitigation strategy. At present, there is a lack of in-depth knowledge of the effects of heavy metal-related industries (HMIs) in China on the environment. Hunan Province, as a representative gathering place of HMIs, is among the regions in China that are the most severely polluted with heavy metals. This paper selected Hunan Province as the study area to analyze the development trend, characteristics of pollution emissions, and environmental impacts of seven HMIs based on emission permit information data from Hunan Province. The results of this study show that (1) from 2000 to 2022, the number of heavy metal-related enterprises in Hunan Province increased overall. Among the seven industries, the chemical product manufacturing industry (CPMI) had the largest number of enterprises, whereas the nonferrous metal smelting and rolling industry (NSRI) had the highest gross industrial product (27.6%). (2) HMIs in Hunan Province had significant emissions of cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), and hydargyrum (Hg) from exhaust gas and wastewater. Heavy metal-related exhaust gas and wastewater outlets from the NSRI constituted 43.9% and 35.3%, respectively, of all outlets of the corresponding type. The proportions of exhaust gas outlets involving Cd, Hg, and As from the NSRI to total exhaust gas outlets were 44.27%, 60.54%, and 34.23%, respectively. The proportions of wastewater outlets involving Cd, Hg, and As from the NSRI to total wastewater outlets were 61.13%, 57.89%, and 75.30%, respectively. (3) The average distances of heavy metal-related enterprises from arable land, rivers, and flooded areas in Hunan Province were 256 m, 1763 m, and 3352 m, respectively. Counties with high environmental risk (H-L type) were situated mainly in eastern Hunan. Among them, Chenzhou had the most heavy metal-related wastewater outlets (22.7%), and Hengyang had the most heavy metal-related exhaust gas outlets (23.1%). The results provide a scientific basis for the prevention and control of heavy metal pollution and an enhancement in environmental sustainability in typical Chinese areas where HMIs are concentrated. Separation of Exhaust Gas Pollutants from Urea Prilling Process with Gasified Biochar for Slow-Release Fertilizer: Adsorption Characteristics, Process Improvement, and Economic Assessment

To address severe ammonia gas and dust pollution coupled with resource waste in exhaust gases from urea prilling towers, a production process for gasified biochar-based slow-release fertilizer is proposed to achieve resource recovery of exhaust pollutants. Through phosphoric acid impregnation modification applied to gasified biochar, its ammonia gas adsorption capacity was significantly enhanced, with saturated adsorption capacity increasing from 0.61 mg/g (unmodified) to 32 mg/g. Coupled with the tower-top bag filter, the modified biochar combines with ammonia gas and urea dust in exhaust gases, subsequently forming biochar-based slow-release fertilizer through dehydration and granulation processes. Material balance analysis demonstrates that a single 400,000-ton/year urea prilling tower achieves a daily fertilizer production capacity of 55 tons, with 18% active ingredient content. The nitrogen content can be upgraded to national standards through urea supplementation. Economic analysis demonstrates a total capital investment of USD1.2 million, with an annual net profit of USD0.88 million and a static payback period of 1.36 years. This process not only achieves ammonia gas emission reduction but also converts waste biochar into high-value fertilizer. It displays dual advantages of environmental benefits and economic feasibility and provides an innovative solution for resource utilization of the exhaust gases from the urea prilling process. Assessment of Harmful Emissions from Multiple Binder Systems in Pilot-Scale Sand Casting

This study investigates hazardous emissions from foundry binder systems, comparing organic resins (phenolic urethane, furan, and alkaline-phenolic) and clay-bonded green sand with inorganic alternatives (sodium silicate and geopolymer). The research was conducted at the Fundaciόn Azterlan pilot plant (Spain), involving controlled chamber tests for the production of 60 kg iron alloy castings in 110 kg sand molds. The molds were evaluated under two configurations: homogeneous systems, where both mold and cores were manufactured using the same binder (five trials), and heterogeneous systems, where different binders were used for mold and cores (four trials). Each mold was placed in a metallic box fitted with a lid and an integrated gas extraction duct. The lid remained open during pouring and was closed immediately afterward to enable efficient evacuation of casting gases through the extraction system. Although the box was not completely airtight, it was designed to direct most exhaust gases through the duct. Along the extraction system line, different sampling instruments were strategically located for the precise measurement of contaminants: volatile organic compounds (VOCs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phenol, multiple forms of particulate matter (including crystalline silica content), and gases produced during pyrolysis. Across the nine trials, inorganic binders demonstrated significant reductions in gas emissions and priority pollutants, achieving decreases of over 90% in BTEX compounds (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene) and over 94% in PAHs compared to organic systems. Gas emissions were also substantially reduced, with CO emissions lowered by over 30%, NOx by more than 98%, and SO2 by over 75%. Conducted under the Greencasting LIFE project (LIFE 21 ENV/FI/101074439), this work provides empirical evidence supporting sodium silicate and geopolymer binders as viable, sustainable solutions for minimizing occupational and ecological risks in metal casting processes.
