Greenwashing refers to the fabrication of environmental claims or the exploitation of unreliable data to support an unjustified green image. This study examines how greenwashing undermines sustainable marketing communication and consumer management by eroding trust-based brand–consumer relationships. Grounded in an integrated framework that combines the Theory of Planned Behavior, Expectation Confirmation Theory, and Consumer–Brand Relationship Theory, the research develops a cohesive model linking brand expectations, belief disconfirmation, consumer confusion, brand trust, and loyalty. Survey data from 375 Lebanese consumers were analyzed using structural equation modeling, confirming that subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and behavioral beliefs significantly shape expectations toward green brands. When greenwashing is perceived, these expectations result in belief disconfirmation, which in turn heightens confusion, reduces trust, and weakens brand loyalty. The findings highlight that while greenwashing may offer short-term reputational benefits, it functions as a critical barrier to sustainable consumption by discouraging authentic engagement with environmentally responsible products. Theoretically, the study advances sustainable marketing literature by identifying expectation disconfirmation and confusion as psychological mechanisms that obstruct progress toward SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). The study’s innovation lies in integrating three behavioral and relational theories into a unified framework that captures both cognitive (disconfirmation, confusion) and relational (trust, loyalty) mechanisms. This theoretical integration offers a transferable analytical model that can be replicated across markets, generating broader insights into how deceptive sustainability communication affects consumer–brand dynamics. It also contextualizes these mechanisms within a developing-market setting, where weak regulation and fragile institutional trust amplify the risks of greenwashing. Practically, the study emphasizes the need for transparent sustainability communication as both an ethical responsibility and a consumer management strategy essential for fostering loyalty. For policymakers, the results underscore the importance of stronger regulatory oversight, eco-labeling standards, and consumer protection frameworks to mitigate deceptive sustainability claims. Transportation-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Louisiana have risen significantly, yet the environmental impacts of asphalt mixture production remain underexplored. This study conducted a cradle-to-gate environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) to quantify global warming potential (GWP) for asphalt mixtures produced in Louisiana and establish GWP benchmarks tailored to mixture types. The LCA encompassed material extraction and production, transport to plants, and asphalt mixing, using two datasets: Environmental Product Declarations from the NAPA Eco-label program (21 mixtures) and Job Mix Formulas from the LaPave database at the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) (207 mixtures). GWP was evaluated using the FHWA LCA Pave tool with TRACI 2.1 factors, and benchmarks were set at the 20th, 40th, 50th percentiles, and the average. Statistical analyses assessed differences across nominal maximum aggregate sizes and traffic levels. Results showed GWP benchmarks from both datasets exceeded U.S. General Services Administration thresholds by an average of 6.5%, with significant variation among mixture types. These findings highlight the need for targeted emission reduction strategies and accurate environmental performance evaluation to promote more sustainable pavement practices and greener infrastructure in Louisiana. Tourism enterprises are increasingly pressured to align competitiveness with sustainability, yet limited evidence exists from Central and Eastern Europe. This study investigates the role of eco-friendly orientation as a determinant of customer satisfaction and perceived competitiveness in the Visegrad Four (Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland, and Hungary). Empirical research was conducted on a sample of 478 enterprises, including hotels, guesthouses, spas, agritourist facilities, and travel agencies. Data were collected between January and June 2025 using a standardized questionnaire and analyzed through descriptive statistics, factor analysis, Pearson correlation, multiple regression, and ANOVA. The findings demonstrate that enterprises adopting more extensive environmental practices report significantly higher customer satisfaction (r = 0.43, p < 0.01) and perceived competitiveness (r = 0.38, p < 0.01). Factor analysis identified three key dimensions of environmental orientation: ecological operations, ecological innovations, and ecological marketing. Regression analysis highlighted ecological marketing, particularly the adoption of certifications and eco-labels, as the strongest predictor of competitiveness. ANOVA revealed significant cross-country differences, with Slovak and Czech enterprises outperforming Polish and Hungarian counterparts. The results suggest that ecological initiatives are essential for long-term competitiveness, providing both strategic guidance for managers and policy implications for fostering supportive regulatory and financial frameworks across the region. This study makes a novel contribution by offering one of the first large-scale empirical analyses of the link between sustainability and competitiveness in Central and Eastern Europe, a region where such research is still scarce. Theoretically, it extends the application of Ecological Modernization Theory to the tourism sector, while practically it provides actionable recommendations for managers and policymakers on integrating eco-certification and ecological marketing into their strategies. These insights underline the dual role of environmental orientation as a driver of both customer satisfaction and competitive advantage. Full article

Sustainable protein consumption is a key element in the transition toward more environmentally responsible food systems. Poultry, due to its relatively low carbon footprint and favorable health profile, holds significant potential to become an important component of the so-called “protein transition.” The aim of this article is to identify cognitive factors influencing consumer purchasing decisions regarding poultry and to formulate recommendations for marketing communication strategies that position poultry as a choice aligned with sustainability goals. This study is based on an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) conducted on a nationally representative sample of Polish consumers (AgriFood 2024). The results revealed three dominant decision-making determinants—taste, health, and convenience—collectively forming the original THC (Taste–Health–Convenience) model. This model provides a novel interpretive framework, showing how sustainability issues can be communicated through immediate, personally relevant consumer benefits, and subsequently expanded to include environmental and ethical aspects. The findings indicate that effective communication should emphasize tangible, everyday consumer benefits while also leveraging poultry’s lower climate impact compared to red meat. This article makes an original contribution to the debate on sustainable diets by presenting the THC model both as a tool for explaining the mechanisms of the attitude–behavior gap and as a practical instrument for designing campaigns that support the implementation of SDG 3 and SDG 12. The extensive application of fungicides in citrus packinghouses to mitigate economic losses has resulted in the emergence of fungicide-resistant biotypes of Penicillium spp. Furthermore, many countries have implemented strict monitoring of fungicide residues to protect consumer health and the ecosystem. Maximum residue limits (MRLs) have been established in accordance with Codex Alimentarius standards, which present challenges for exports, as exceeding MRLs may restrict market access. This study aimed to identify fungicide-resistant strains of Penicillium spp. in a Moroccan citrus packinghouse and to assess the efficacy of GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) salts as eco-friendly alternatives for controlling these resistant strains through in vitro and in vivo tests. A total of 31 Penicillium isolates, labeled H1 to H31, were collected; 10 were identified as P. digitatum and 21 were identified as P. italicum. Resistance to thiabendazole (61.3%) and imazalil (58.1%) was notable, with some isolates showing dual resistance. In vitro, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, and sodium tetraborate salts were highly effective at inhibiting the mycelial growth of resistant isolates, at a concentration of 0.3% (p < 0.0001). In vivo tests on ‘Nadorcott’ fruits demonstrated that 2% and 4% salt solutions effectively prevented the development of green and blue molds caused by Penicillium spp. and showed strong curative effects, resulting in nearly 100% inhibition of most fungal isolates. Additionally, preventive salt treatments increased the accumulation of phenolic and flavonoid compounds, while in fruits treated with sodium benzoate, chitinase and peroxidase activities were significantly enhanced. Food spoilage and contamination remain pressing global challenges, undermining food security and safety while driving economic losses. Conventional preservation strategies, including thermal treatments, refrigeration, and synthetic additives, often compromise nutritional quality and raise sustainability concerns, thereby necessitating natural, effective alternatives. Curcumin, a polyphenolic compound derived from Curcuma longa, has demonstrated broad-spectrum antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activities, making it a promising candidate for food preservation. However, its poor solubility, instability, and low bioavailability limit direct applications in food systems. Advances in nanotechnology have enabled the development of nanoformulated curcumin, enhancing solubility, stability, controlled release, and functional efficacy. This review examines the antimicrobial mechanisms of curcumin and its nanoformulations, including membrane disruption, oxidative stress via reactive oxygen species, quorum sensing inhibition, and biofilm suppression. Applications in active and smart packaging are highlighted, where curcumin nanoformulation not only extends shelf life but also enables freshness monitoring through pH-responsive color changes. Evidence across meats, seafood, fruits, dairy, and beverages shows improved microbial safety, oxidative stability, and sensory quality. Multifunctional systems, such as hybrid composites and stimuli-responsive carriers, represent next-generation tools for sustainable packaging. However, challenges remain with scale-up, migration safety, cytotoxicity, and potential promotion of antimicrobial resistance gene (ARG) transfer. Future research should focus on safety validation, advanced nanocarriers, ARG-aware strategies, and regulatory frameworks. Overall, nanoformulated curcumin offers a natural, versatile, and eco-friendly approach to food preservation that aligns with clean-label consumer demand. Full article

Microplastic pollution is an escalating environmental and public health issue. Defined as plastic particles less than 5 mm in size, microplastics have been found in oceans, rivers, food, drinking water, air, and even human tissues. While scientific research on microplastics has expanded significantly, public understanding and behavioral change remain limited. This literature scan synthesizes global findings on public awareness, perceptions, and responses to microplastics, drawing from surveys, focus groups, and online behavioral data collected by existing studies. It explores the following: (1) general knowledge and perceived environmental and health risks; (2) trust in scientific and governmental sources; (3) willingness to adopt behavioral changes; (4) attitudes toward policy and corporate responsibility. Public concern is high, especially regarding marine life and food safety, but varies across populations based on education, socioeconomic status, and media exposure. Despite growing concern, psychological distance and persistent knowledge gaps hinder meaningful action. Communication strategies such as school programs, media campaigns, and eco-labels show mixed success, while regulatory interventions like plastic bags or microbead bans are more effective when supported by clear public messaging. This literature scan highlights the need for interdisciplinary collaboration to close the knowledge–behavior–policy gap and strengthen public engagement, particularly in urban settings where consumption and waste generation are concentrated. Bio-based lubricants are rapidly gaining prominence as sustainable alternatives to petroleum-derived counterparts, driven by their inherent biodegradability, low ecotoxicity, and strong alignment with global environmental and regulatory imperatives. Despite their promising tribological properties, their widespread adoption continues to confront significant challenges, particularly related to oxidative and thermal instability, cold-flow behavior, and cost competitiveness in demanding high-performance applications. This comprehensive review critically synthesizes the latest advancements in bio-based lubricant technology, spanning feedstock innovations, sophisticated chemical modification strategies, and the development of advanced additive systems. Notably, recent formulations demonstrate remarkable performance enhancements, achieving friction reductions of up to 40% and contributing to substantial CO2 emission reductions, ranging from 30 to 60%, as evidenced by comparative life-cycle assessments and energy efficiency studies. Distinguishing this review from existing literature, this study offers a unique, holistic perspective by integrally analyzing global market trends, industrial adoption dynamics, and evolving regulatory frameworks, such as the European Union Eco-Label and the U.S. EPA Vessel General Permit, alongside technological advancements. This study critically assesses emerging methodologies for tribological evaluation and benchmark performance across diverse, critical sectors including automotive, industrial, and marine applications. By connecting in-depth technical innovations with crucial socio-economic and environmental considerations, this paper not only identifies key research gaps but also outlines a pragmatic roadmap for accelerating the mainstream adoption of bio-based lubricants, positioning them as an indispensable cornerstone of sustainable tribology. The long-term application of traditional chemical herbicides has caused a significant escalation in herbicide resistance of barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli). As an eco-friendly alternative, biological herbicides demonstrate substantial application potential. Acknowledging the growing herbicide resistance of E. crus-galli, this study aimed to screen target bacteria with inhibitory effects on the growth for bio-herbicide development. By using ungerminated E. crus-galli seeds as the screening substrate, a bacterial strain (BFYBC-8) with potent inhibitory activity was isolated and identified as Brucella pseudorignonensis. Pot experiments revealed that inoculation with B. pseudorignonensis BFYBC-8 significantly suppressed E. crus-galli growth, reducing plant height by 16.7% and root length by 85.1%, while markedly inhibiting biomass accumulation. Fluorescent labeling with green fluorescent protein (GFP) showed that BFYBC-8 successfully colonized the root intercellular spaces of E. crus-galli and extended continuously along the tissue matrix. Additionally, the strain’s supernatant metabolic products exhibited exceptional thermostability: inhibitory activity against E. crus-galli was maintained after thermal treatment at 28 °C, 60 °C, 80 °C, and 100 °C. Crucially, the bacterium displayed no toxicity to agronomically important crops such as rice, wheat, and corn. This study highlights B. pseudorignonensis BFYBC-8 as a promising candidate for bioherbicide development and provides an important reference for applying seed-associated pathogenic bacteria in developing bioherbicides for sustainable weed management. The increasing demand for sustainably produced food has intensified interest in fermented milk products, such as yoghurt, which combine nutritional value with environmental and ethical considerations. However, the authenticity of sustainability claims in this sector remains contested, raising concerns about consumer trust and regulatory clarity. This review examines the role of certification and labelling in verifying and communicating the sustainability of fermented milk products. The analysis covers regulatory frameworks, consumer perceptions, and the potential of digital tools to improve transparency. Findings highlight inconsistencies in defining key terms such as organic, probiotic, and carbon-neutral, which hinder certification harmonization. Complex labels and allergen declarations can reduce clarity and trust, while overlapping or vague eco-labels risk contributing to consumer confusion and skepticism. Despite this, credible certifications still enhance purchase intent. Modern technologies, including blockchain traceability, interactive QR codes, and digital product passports, offer new ways to reinforce trust, though implementation costs and regulatory gaps remain barriers. This review concludes that effective sustainability communication must integrate robust certification schemes with simplified, transparent messaging. Harmonized standards, improved label design, and consumer education are essential to support informed choices and foster trust in sustainable dairy. Full article

Global concern over the sustainability impacts of food products has grown considerably in recent years, driven by heightened awareness of environmental issues and the rising demand for sustainably produced foods. In response, industries are increasingly offering sustainable product options and utilizing ecolabels to communicate environmental and social impacts. While product labelling has become one of the most widely adopted tools for conveying sustainability information, existing ecolabeling approaches often face challenges of trust, transparency, and consistency. Current ecolabels are typically issued by supply-chain stakeholders or independent third-party certifiers; however, limitations in accountability and verification hinder consumer confidence. To address these challenges, this study proposes a Blockchain-based Sustainability Information Management and Reporting (BSIMR) model that integrates blockchain technology with sustainability indicators. The framework is designed to provide a standardized, transparent, and reliable approach for managing and verifying sustainability claims across food supply chains. By enhancing traceability, accountability, and consistency in sustainability auditing, the BSIMR model aims to empower consumers with trustworthy information and support industries in meeting sustainability commitments. The feasibility and applicability of the proposed framework are demonstrated through a proof-of-concept case study on sustainability information management in the rice supply chain. Full article

This review provides a comprehensive overview of the recent green innovations in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for sustainable food analysis. It outlines the principles of green analytical chemistry and examines advances such as eco-friendly solvent systems, miniaturized and energy-efficient instrumentation, and greener sample preparation techniques. Key applications include the analysis of bioactive compounds, detection of contaminants and residues, and support for clean-label and sustainability claims. Furthermore, the review discusses relevant regulatory and certification frameworks, including ISO 14001, ISO 22000, and global food safety initiatives aligned with environmental, social, and governance standards. Persistent challenges, such as cost, limitations in analytical performance, and limited instrument availability, are highlighted, along with the need for reliable metrics to assess the environmental impact and effectiveness of green analytical practices. The review concludes by emphasizing the need for interdisciplinary collaboration among scientists, industry stakeholders, and regulatory bodies to support the wider adoption of sustainable HPLC practices in food laboratories. This study investigates the factors influencing green purchase behavior in emerging economies, focusing on Indonesian consumers’ preferences for organic food products. While sustainability awareness is growing globally, limited research has examined how environmental knowledge and trust interact with marketing efforts to shape green purchasing decisions in developing market contexts like Indonesia. The research model incorporates five constructs: environmental knowledge (awareness of ecological issues), green trust (confidence in environmental claims), green marketing mix (eco-oriented strategies for product, price, place, and promotion), green purchase intention (likelihood of buying eco-friendly products), and green purchase behavior (actual sustainable buying decisions). Data from 211 valid respondents were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results indicate that environmental knowledge directly influences green trust and the green marketing mix but not green purchase intention or behavior. Instead, it affects behavior indirectly through trust and intention. Contrary to expectations, green trust does not influence the green marketing mix, suggesting it may operate independently of marketing strategies. Similarly, the green marketing mix does not significantly influence green purchase intention or behavior, suggesting that marketing strategies alone may be insufficient in driving sustainable consumer choices. These findings highlight the important role of environmental knowledge in fostering consumer trust and indirectly guiding green purchasing behavior in emerging markets. By promoting sustainable consumption through knowledge and trust, this study offers insights into consumer behavior as a pathway to advancing planetary health. This study advances the Theory of Planned Behavior by integrating green trust and the green marketing mix to explain how trust and economic factors shape green purchasing behavior. Practical implications suggest that businesses should adopt targeted green marketing strategies, such as educational campaigns, eco-labeling, or certifications, to enhance environmental awareness, build consumer trust, and encourage sustainable purchasing decisions. This study contributes to the literature by examining how environmental knowledge indirectly influences green purchase behavior through the mediation of trust and intention within the context of an emerging market. This study examines how Japanese consumers’ awareness of multiple eco-labels, specifically Organic JAS and RSPO, affects their willingness to pay more for eco-labeled cosmetic products. Drawing on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and Signaling Theory, this study models the interaction between awareness of these two eco-labels and their influence on organic cosmetic buying intentions. Using statistical analysis of survey data from 505 Japanese consumers, the findings reveal that heightened awareness of the Organic JAS label significantly increases the willingness to pay more for eco-labeled cosmetics. However, when awareness of the RSPO label is also present, the positive effect of Organic JAS awareness diminishes, indicating that multiple eco-label signals may interfere with each other. These results underscore the complexity of consumer perceptions regarding eco-labels and suggest that the effectiveness of eco-labels as green marketing tools depends not only on raising awareness but also on understanding how different labels interact to influence consumers’ willingness to pay in the Japanese cosmetics market. Green food serves as a bridge connecting healthy lifestyles with environmental values, particularly in the context of sustainable consumption transitions. However, existing research lacks a systematic understanding of how consumers negotiate cognitive evaluations and emotional responses when forming green food purchase intentions. This study addresses that gap by exploring the cognitive–affective negotiation process underlying consumers’ green food choices. Based on 26 semi-structured interviews with Chinese consumers across diverse socio-economic backgrounds, the grounded theory methodology was employed to inductively construct a conceptual model. The coding process achieved theoretical saturation, while sentiment analysis was integrated to trace the emotional valence of key behavioral drivers. Findings reveal that external factors—including price sensitivity, label ambiguity, access limitations, social influence, and health beliefs—shape behavioral intentions indirectly through three core affective mediators: green trust, perceived value, and lifestyle congruence. These internal constructs translate contextual stimuli into evaluative and motivational responses, highlighting the dynamic interplay between rational judgments and symbolic–emotional interpretations. Sentiment analysis confirmed that emotional trust and psychological reassurance are pivotal in facilitating consumption intention, while price concerns and skepticism act as affective inhibitors. The proposed model extends the Theory of Planned Behavior by embedding affective mediation pathways and structural constraint dynamics, offering a more context-sensitive framework for understanding sustainable consumption behaviors. Given China’s certification-centered trust environment, these findings underscore the cultural specificity of institutional trust mechanisms, with implications for adapting the model in different market contexts. Practically, this study offers actionable insights for policymakers and marketers to enhance eco-label transparency, reduce structural barriers, and design emotionally resonant brand narratives that align with consumers’ identity aspirations.
