With the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) in the shipping industry, using AI to replace traditional draft survey methods in bulk carriers can significantly reduce manpower, lower the risks associated with visual observations, improve measurement accuracy, and minimize the impact of human subjective factors. Ultimately, the integration of software and hardware technologies will replace human visual observations with automated draft measurement calculations. A similar anti-fluctuation device described in this article has been used in ship draft observation based on AI-assisted proving, which can ease the fluctuation of the wave inside the pipe. Observers can directly read the water surface inside the pipe and compare it to the ship’s draft mark to obtain the final draft, effectively improving draft observation accuracy. However, some surveyors refuse to accept the readings obtained from this device, citing a lack of theoretical basis or the absence of accreditation from relevant technical authorities, leading to the rejection of results. To address these issues, this paper integrates wave energy attenuation theory with PaddlePaddle-OCR recognition to further validate the anti-fluctuation device for accurate ship draft observation. The experimental results are as follows: first, the pipe effectively suppresses the amplitude of external water surface fluctuations by 75%, explaining the fundamental theory that wave heights within the anti-fluctuation device are consistent with external swell heights. When taking a draft measurement, the system dynamically adjusts the position of the main tube in response to the ship’s movements, maintaining the stability of the measurement section and significantly reducing the difficulty of observations. Due to the reduction in fluctuation amplitude, there is a noticeable improvement in observation accuracy. Full article

In contrast to classic hydrographic cutters, unmanned surface vehicles, due to their size, ease of transport and the equipment installed, enable the performance of quick and cost-effective bottom inspections in various water areas. Thanks to their shallow draught and high manoeuvrability, hydrographic drones are capable of the bathymetric exploration of shallow waters such as harbours, hydrotechnical structures and the areas where classic naval vessels could encounter implementation difficulties. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate, using a selected practical example, the specific ability of an unmanned surface vehicle (USV) to carry out the urgent and immediate inspection of the bottom of a specific water area. The freedom to move between restricted areas, the ease of transport and the satisfactory quality of the surveys make hydrographic drones ideal tools for projects of this type. The referenced study produced a bathymetric map of a section of the seabed adjacent to the quay at which a Search and Rescue (SAR) vessel is moored and regularly, at its permanent fixed location, actuates its propellers. The effect of its propellers is the local deepening of the bottom in two places. The research showed a local decrease in the depth from 5.5 m to less than 7 m, which may threaten the stability of the quay structure. In addition, it was noted that the washed bottom material had been moved approximately 10 m from the quay, causing shallowing in two places and reducing the depth from 5.5 m to 4.7 m. This study demonstrated that the use of USVs for applications of this type is very effective in terms of the implementation time and is economically justified. Full article

Soil-engaging components play a critical role in agricultural production and engineering construction. However, the soil-engaging components directly interacting with the soil often suffer from the problems of high resistance, adhesion, and wear, which significantly reduce the efficiency and quality of soil operations. A large number of featured studies on the design of soil-engaging components have been carried out while applying the principles of bionics extensively, and significant research results have been achieved. This review conducts a comprehensive literature survey on the application of biomimetics in the design of soil-engaging components. The focus is on performance optimization in regard to the following three aspects: draught reduction, anti-adhesion, and wear resistance. The mechanisms of various biomimetic soil-engaging components are systematically explained. Based on the literature analysis and biomimetic research, future trends in the development of biomimetic soil-engaging components are discussed from both the mechanism and application perspectives. This research is expected to provide new insights and inspiration for addressing related scientific and engineering challenges. Full article

Deagrarianisation amongst smallholder farmers is a growing phenomenon globally, driven by a complex array of context-specific and higher-scale factors. Most research has focused on declines in arable cropping, with relatively little regard to the deagrarianisation dynamics associated with livestock ownership, yet the two are often linked through the need for draught power for ploughing. Here, we report on a survey of 293 rural households in 10 rural villages in the Eastern Cape province, South Africa, where we ascertained whether ownership of cattle, goats, sheep and pigs had changed over the previous 15 years and what were the underlying reasons for any changes at both village- and household-scale. The majority felt that there had been a decline in the number of households keeping livestock and the number of animals in the village. Additionally, a clear majority of owners for each type of livestock stated that their households currently have fewer animals than 15 years ago. The main reasons for declines were that their animals had died due to drought or disease, theft, or they had sold them because of financial needs. There was a positive association between the keeping of cattle and field cultivation. Despite these general declines, two-thirds of households currently without livestock wished that they had some, primarily for use in cultural ceremonies/rituals or for income. This study shows the deagrarianisation processes in the region also apply to the livestock sector despite the significance of livestock in the local Xhosa culture. This study highlights the multifaceted nature of deagrarianisation in communal tenure systems. Full article

The bathymetric surveys executed with a use of small survey vessels in limited water areas, including offshore areas, require precise determination of the geospatial coordinates of the seabed which is a synthesis of, among others, determining the position coordinates and measuring the depth. Inclination of the seabed and the declining depth make manoeuvring of the sounding vessel, e.g., a hydrographic motorboat or Unmanned Survey Vehicle (USV), in shallow water impossible. Therefore, it is important to determine the minimal depth for the survey resulting from the draught of the sounding vessel and the limits of the sounding area. The boundaries also result from the dimensions of the sounding vessel, its manoeuvring parameters and local water level. Type of the echosounder used in the bathymetric survey is a decisive factor for the sounding profile planning and the distances between them and the survey vessel for the possibility performing the measurements in shallow water. Electronic Navigational Chart (ENC) was used to determine the water area’s boundaries, and the safety contours were determined on the basis of the built Digital Sea Bottom Model (DSBM). The safety contour, together with the vessel’s dimensions, its manoeuvring parameters and the hydrometeorological conditions, limit the offshore area in which the measurement can be performed. A method of determining boundaries of the survey performed by a USV equipped with SingleBeam EchoSounder (SBES) on survey lines perpendicular to the coastal line are presented in the paper in order to cover the water area with the highest amount of measurement data, with the USV’s navigational safety taken into consideration. The measurements executed on the municipal beach served verification of the DSBM. Full article

The indoor environment is composed of several exposures existing simultaneously. Therefore, it might be useful to combine exposures into common combined measures when used to assess the association with health. The aim of our study was to identify patterns of the perceived indoor environment. Data from the Danish Health and Morbidity Survey in the year 2000 were used. The perceived indoor environment was assessed using a questionnaire (e.g., annoyances from noise, draught, and stuffy air; 13 items in total). Factor analysis was used to explore the structure of relationships between these 13 items. Furthermore, groups of individuals with similar perceived indoor environment were identified using latent class analysis. A total of 16,688 individuals ≥16 years participated. Their median age was 46 years. Four factors were extracted from the factor analysis. The factors were characterized by: (1) a mixture of items, (2) temperature, (3) traffic, and (4) neighbor noise. Moreover, three groups of individuals sharing the same perception of their indoor environment were identified. They were characterized by: a low (n = 14,829), moderate (n = 980), and large number of annoyances (n = 879). Observational studies need to take this correlation and clustering of perceived annoyances into account when studying associations between the indoor environment and health. Full article

Local thermal comfort and draught rate has been studied widely. There has been more meaningful research performed in controlled boundary condition situations than in actual work environments involving occupants. Thermal comfort conditions in office buildings in Estonia have been barely investigated in the past. In this paper, the results of thermal comfort and draught rate assessment in five office buildings in Tallinn are presented and discussed. Studied office landscapes vary in heating, ventilation and cooling system parameters, room units, and elements. All sample buildings were less than six years old, equipped with dedicated outdoor air ventilation system and room conditioning units. The on-site measurements consisted of thermal comfort and draught rate assessment with indoor climate questionnaire. The purpose of the survey is to assess the correspondence between heating, ventilation and cooling system design, and the actual situation. Results show, whether and in what extent the standard-based criteria for thermal comfort is suitable for actual usage of the occupants. Preferring one room conditioning unit type or system may not guarantee better thermal environment without draught. Although some heating, ventilation and cooling systems observed in this study should create the prerequisites for ensuring more comfort, results show that this is not the case for all buildings in this study. Despite agricultural land abandonment threatening the food security and the livelihoods of smallholder farmers, it is pervasive globally and in developing countries. Yet land abandonment is an understudied aspect of land use change in social–ecological systems. Here we provide more information on this phenomenon by exploring cropland abandonment during 1950–2010 in four former South African ‘homelands’—part of the ‘Apartheid’ era racially-based land allocation programs—characterized by rural, smallholder farmers. Cropland abandonment 1950–2010 was widespread in all surveyed sites (KwaZulu: 0.08% year−1, Transkei: 0.13% year−1, Lebowa: 0.23% year−1, Venda: 0.28% year−1), with rates peaking between 1970 and 1990, with concomitant increases (up to 0.16% year−1) of woody vegetation cover at the expense of grassland cover. Active and past farmers attributed cropland abandonment to a lack of draught power, rainfall variability and droughts, and a more modernized youth disinclined to living a marginal agrarian lifestyle. We discuss the potential social and ecological implications of abandoned croplands at the local and regional scales, as the deagrarianization trend is unlikely to abate considering the failure of current South African national agricultural incentives.
