Sociotechnical systems (STSs) are generally assumed to be systems that incorporate humans and technology, strongly depending on a sustainable equilibrium between the following nondeterministic social context ingredients: social structures, roles, and rights, as well as the designers’ Holy Grail, the deterministic nature of the underlying technical system. The fact that the relevant social concepts are more mature than the supporting technologies qualifies the digital transformation of sociotechnical systems as a reengineering rather than an engineering endeavor. Preserving the social mission throughout the digital transformation process in varying social contexts is mandatory, making the digital twins (DT) methodology application a contemporary research hotspot. In this research, we combined continuous transformation STS theory principles, an observer-based system-of-sociotechnical-systems (SoSTS) architecture model, and digital twinning methods to address common STS context representation challenges. Additionally, based on model-driven systems engineering methodology and meta-object-facility principles, the research specifies the universal meta-concepts and meta-modeling templates, supporting the creation of arbitrary sociotechnical systems’ external context digital twins. Due to the inherent diversity, significantly influenced by geopolitical, economic, and cultural influencers, a higher education external context specialization illustrates the reusability potentials of the proposed universal meta-concepts. Substituting higher-education-related meta-concepts and meta-models with arbitrary domain-dependent specializations further fosters the proposed universal meta-concepts’ reusability. Full article

The IoE forms the foundation of the modern digital ecosystem by enabling seamless connectivity and data exchange among smart devices, sensors, and systems. However, the inherent nature of this structure, characterized by high heterogeneity, distribution, and resource constraints, renders traditional security approaches insufficient in areas such as data privacy, authentication, access control, and scalable protection. Moreover, centralized security systems face increasing fragility due to single points of failure, various AI-based attacks, including adversarial learning, model poisoning, and deepfakes, and the rising threat of quantum computers to encryption protocols. This study systematically examines the individual and integrated solution potentials of technologies such as Blockchain, Edge Computing, Artificial Intelligence, and Quantum-Resilient Cryptography within the scope of IoE security. Comparative analyses are provided based on metrics such as energy consumption, latency, computational load, and security level, while centralized and decentralized models are evaluated through a multi-layered security lens. In addition to the proposed multi-layered architecture, the study also structures solution methods and technology integrations specific to IoE environments. Classifications, architectural proposals, and the balance between performance and security are addressed from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Furthermore, a future vision is presented regarding federated learning-based privacy-preserving AI solutions, post-quantum digital signatures, and lightweight consensus algorithms. In this context, the study reveals existing vulnerabilities through an interdisciplinary approach and proposes a holistic framework for sustainable, scalable, and quantum-compatible IoE security. This study presents a comparison of the mechanical properties of selected high-performance concrete mixtures, some of which contained a proportion of recycled concrete aggregate (15% or 30%) as a substitute for natural aggregate. A reference mixture without recycled concrete aggregate was used for comparison. Initially, the properties of concrete containing both the natural and recycled aggregate types were characterized. This was followed by a series of mechanical tests investigating the compressive strength, flexural strength, and chemical resistance (including resistance to de-icing agents and sulfuric acid). The structural performance of reinforced concrete (RC) beams produced from the mixtures was assessed, and surface morphology was evaluated using a digital microscope. The results confirmed that the use of recycled aggregate had a measurable yet limited effect on the properties of hardened concrete. While the compressive strength tended to decrease slightly with an increasing degree of replacement, the flexural strength remained stable in all the mixtures. The tested mixtures demonstrated adequate resistance to de-icing agents and sulfuric acid. Interestingly, specimens subjected to a frost-resistance test showed improved flexural strength, potentially due to ongoing hydration or microcrack healing. In addition, the RC beams with partial aggregate replacement achieved a higher load-bearing capacity compared to the reference beams. The optical surface evaluation method proved to be a valuable tool, complementary to conventional strength testing. This research enhances the current understanding of recycled aggregate concrete and supports its potential for structural applications. Full article

Urban sustainability challenges demand integrated frameworks capable of addressing the dynamic, non-linear nature of cities. This study explores how the principles of the circular economy and complexity theory intersect to support systemic transformation in sustainable urban planning. Through a systematic literature review of 71 peer-reviewed articles published between 2015 and 2025, we analyze conceptual, methodological, and practical articulations across multiple thematic axes, including circular governance, urban metabolism, regenerative design, adaptive planning, digital integration, and environmental justice. Bibliometric and content analyses were conducted using Scopus metadata, VOSviewer for thematic clustering, and the StArt software (Version 3.4) to structure article selection. The findings reveal that circular economy provides practical tools for resource efficiency and regeneration, while complexity theory offers an adaptive framework to navigate uncertainty, emergent behaviors, and feedback dynamics. The synthesis suggests that their integration enables a more holistic and resilient approach to urban transformation. However, gaps remain in social inclusivity, long-term assessment, and the operationalization of complexity-informed planning. This study contributes to advancing a transdisciplinary agenda for circular and adaptive urban futures, offering insights for scholars, planners, and policymakers aiming to reconfigure cities within planetary boundaries. Artificial intelligence (AI)-generated content (AIGC) is an innovative technology that utilizes machine learning, AI models, reward modeling, and natural language processing (NLP) to create diverse digital content such as videos, images, and text. It has the potential to support various human activities with significant implications in teaching and learning, facilitating heuristic teaching for educators. By using AIGC, teachers can create extensive knowledge content and effectively design instructional strategies to guide students, aligning with heuristic teaching. However, incorporating AIGC into heuristic teaching has controversies and concerns, which potentially mislead outcomes. Nevertheless, leveraging AIGC greatly benefits teachers in enhancing heuristic teaching. When integrating AIGC to support heuristic teaching, challenges and risks must be acknowledged and addressed. These challenges include the need for users to possess sufficient knowledge reserves to identify incorrect information and content generated by AIGC, the importance of avoiding excessive reliance on AIGC, ensuring users maintain control over their actions rather than being driven by AIGC, and the necessity of scrutinizing and verifying the accuracy of information and knowledge generated by AIGC to preserve its effectiveness. Climate change represents one of the main challenges of this century. The hazards generated by this process are various and involve territorial assets all over the globe. Hydrogeological risk represents one of these aspects, and the violence of rain precipitations has led experts to focus their interest on the study of geotechnical assets in relation to these dangerous weather events. At the same time, geospatial representation in 3D WebGIS based on open-source solutions led specialists to employ this kind of technology to remotely analyze and monitor territorial events considering different sources of information. This study considers the construction of a 3D WebGIS framework for the real-time management of geospatial information developed with open-source technologies applied to the dynamic mapping of precipitation in the metropolitan area of Palermo (Italy) based on real-time weather station acquisitions. The structure considered is a WebGIS platform developed with Cesium.js JavaScript libraries, the Postgres database, Geoserver and Mapserver geospatial servers, and the Anaconda Python platform for activating real-time data connections using Python scripts. This framework represents a basic geospatial digital twin structure useful to municipalities, civil protection services, and firefighters for land management and for activating any preventive operations to ensure territorial safety. Furthermore, the open-source nature of the platform favors the free diffusion of this solution, avoiding expensive applications based on property software. This study adopts a dynamic Expectancy–Disconfirmation framework to investigate the evolving nature of user satisfaction across three product categories: durable goods, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), and digital products. A 25-day longitudinal experiment involving 128 participants was conducted, during which users engaged with their most recently purchased products and provided repeated subjective evaluations over time. The findings reveal dynamic changes in the influence of expectations and perceived performance on satisfaction throughout the product usage cycle. For durable goods and FMCG, both expectations and perceived performance gradually declined, accompanied by a weakening effect of expectations on satisfaction. In contrast, digital products exhibited greater volatility, lacking a stable experiential baseline and resulting in greater fluctuations in satisfaction trajectories. Moreover, external contextual and emotional factors were found to play a more significant role in shaping satisfaction with physical products, beyond the scope of the traditional expectancy–performance model. These insights offer theoretical and managerial implications for sustainable product and experience design. In particular, they highlight the importance of implementing experience-stabilizing strategies in digital consumption contexts to support user well-being and enhance continuous product utilization, thereby maximizing product potential and reducing waste. Museums play an essential role in preserving both cultural and natural heritage, safeguarding samples that offer invaluable insights into our history and scientific understanding. The integration of micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) has significantly advanced the study, restoration, and conservation of these priceless objects. This work explores the application of micro-CT across three critical areas of museum practice: sample virtualization, restoration assessment, and the analysis of fossil specimens. Specifically, micro-CT scanning was applied to fossils stored in the G.A.M.P.S. collection (Scandicci, Italy), enabling the creation of highly detailed non-invasive 3D models for digital archiving and virtual exhibitions. At the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence, micro-CT was employed to evaluate fossil bone restoration treatments, focusing on the internal impact of menthol as a consolidant and its effects on the structural integrity of the material. Furthermore, micro-CT was utilized to investigate a sealed bee preserved in its cocoon within a paleosol in Costa Vicentina (Portugal), providing unprecedented insights into its internal anatomy and state of preservation, all while maintaining the integrity of the specimen. The results of this study underscore the versatility of micro-CT as a powerful non-destructive tool for advancing the fields of conservation, restoration, and scientific analysis of cultural and natural heritage. By integrating high-resolution imaging with both virtual and hands-on conservation strategies, micro-CT empowers museums to enhance research capabilities, improve preservation methodologies, and foster greater public engagement with their collections. Predicting Landslide Susceptibility Using Cost Function in Low-Relief Areas: A Case Study of the Urban Municipality of Attecoube (Abidjan, Ivory Coast)

Landslides are among the most hazardous natural phenomena affecting Greater Abidjan, causing significant economic and social damage. Strategic planning supported by geographic information systems (GIS) can help mitigate potential losses and enhance disaster resilience. This study evaluates landslide susceptibility using logistic regression and frequency ratio models. The analysis is based on a dataset comprising 54 mapped landslide scarps collected from June 2015 to July 2023, along with 16 thematic predictor variables, including altitude, slope, aspect, profile curvature, plan curvature, drainage area, distance to the drainage network, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and an urban-related layer. A high-resolution (5-m) digital elevation model (DEM), derived from multiple data sources, supports the spatial analysis. The landslide inventory was randomly divided into two subsets: 80% for model calibration and 20% for validation. After optimization and statistical testing, the selected thematic layers were integrated to produce a susceptibility map. The results indicate that 6.3% (0.7 km2) of the study area is classified as very highly susceptible. The proportion of the sample (61.2%) in this class had a frequency ratio estimated to be 20.2. Among the predictive indicators, altitude, slope, SE, S, NW, and NDVI were found to have a positive impact on landslide occurrence. Model performance was assessed using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), demonstrating strong predictive capability. These findings can support informed land-use planning and risk reduction strategies in urban areas. Furthermore, the prediction model should be communicated to and understood by local authorities to facilitate disaster management. The cost function was adopted as a novel approach to delineate hazardous zones. Considering the landslide inventory period, the increasing hazard due to climate change, and the intensification of human activities, a reasoned choice of sample size was made. This informed decision enabled the production of an updated prediction map. Optimal thresholds were then derived to classify areas into high- and low-susceptibility categories. The prediction map will be useful to planners in helping them make decisions and implement protective measures. Full article

Beyond Compliance: How Disruptive Innovation Unleashes ESG Value Under Digital Institutional Pressure

Amid intensifying global ESG regulations and the expanding influence of green finance, China’s digital economy policies have emerged as key institutional instruments for promoting corporate sustainability. Leveraging the implementation of the National Big Data Comprehensive Pilot Zone as a quasi-natural experiment, this study utilizes panel data of Chinese listed firms from 2009 to 2023 and applies multi-period Difference-in-Differences (DID) and Spatial DID models to rigorously identify the policy’s effects on corporate ESG performance. Empirical results indicate that the impact of digital economy policy is not exerted through a direct linear pathway but operates via three institutional mechanisms, enhanced information transparency, eased financing constraints, and expanded fiscal support, collectively constructing a logic of “institutional embedding–governance restructuring.” Moreover, disruptive technological innovation significantly amplifies the effects of the transparency and fiscal mechanisms, but exhibits no statistically significant moderating effect on the financing constraint pathway, suggesting a misalignment between innovation heterogeneity and financial responsiveness. Further heterogeneity analysis confirms that the policy effect is concentrated among firms characterized by robust governance structures, high levels of property rights marketization, and greater digital maturity. This study contributes to the literature by developing an integrated moderated mediation framework rooted in institutional theory, agency theory, and dynamic capabilities theory. The findings advance the theoretical understanding of ESG policy transmission by unpacking the micro-foundations of institutional response under digital policy regimes, while offering actionable insights into the strategic alignment of digital transformation and sustainability-oriented governance. Diagnosing digital flexor tendon sheath (DFTS) pathologies, particularly manica flexoria (MF) tears, can be challenging with standard imaging modalities. Standing low-field MRI tenography (MRIt) may improve the detection rate of MF tears. This study aimed to compare ultrasonography, contrast radiography, pre-contrast MRI, and MRIt to detect naturally occurring MF lesions in horses undergoing tenoscopy. Ten horses with a positive DFTS block, which underwent contrast radiography, ultrasonography, MRI, MRIt, and tenoscopy were included. Two radiologists evaluated the images and recorded whether an MF lesion was present and determined the lesion side. Sensitivity and specificity were calculated for each modality using tenoscopy as a reference. MRIt and contrast radiography detected MF lesions with the same frequency, both showing 71% sensitivity and 100% specificity. Pre-contrast MRI and ultrasonography detected MF lesions with a lower sensitivity (57%); however, the MRI (100%) demonstrated a higher specificity than ultrasonography (33%). Adding contrast in MRI changed the sensitivity from (4/7 lesions) 57% to (5/7 lesions) 71%, with a constant high specificity (100%). MRIt diagnoses MF tears with a similar sensitivity to contrast radiography, with the same specificity, but with the added benefit of lesion laterality detection. The combined advantages of the anatomical detail of the T1 sequence and the post-contrast hyperintense appearance of the fluid may help diagnose MF tears and identify intact MFs. It is structured into six interrelated sections that collectively address key dimensions of gendered digital contexts. It begins by addressing the gender digital divide, particularly in the Global South, emphasizing disparities in access, literacy, and sociocultural constraints. The second section examines gendered labor in the tech industry, highlighting persistent inequalities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education, employment, and platform-based work. The third part focuses on gender representation in digital spaces, revealing how algorithmic and platform design perpetuate biases. The fourth section discusses gender bias in AI and disinformation, underscoring the systemic nature of digital inequalities. This is followed by an analysis of online gender-based violence, particularly its impact on marginalized communities and participation in digital life. The final section considers the potentials and limitations of digital activism in advancing gender justice. The integration of digital twins (DTs) with intelligent traffic systems (ITSs) holds strong potential for improving real-time management in smart cities. However, securing digital twins remains a significant challenge due to the dynamic and adversarial nature of cyber–physical environments. In this work, we propose TwinFedPot, an innovative digital twin-based security architecture that combines honeypot-driven data collection with Zero-Shot Learning (ZSL) for robust and adaptive cyber threat detection without requiring prior sampling. The framework leverages Inverse Federated Distillation (IFD) to train the DT server, where edge-deployed honeypots generate semantic predictions of anomalous behavior and upload soft logits instead of raw data. Unlike conventional federated approaches, TwinFedPot reverses the typical knowledge flow by distilling collective intelligence from the honeypots into a central teacher model hosted on the DT. This inversion allows the system to learn generalized attack patterns using only limited data, while preserving privacy and enhancing robustness. Experimental results demonstrate significant improvements in accuracy and F1-score, establishing TwinFedPot as a scalable and effective defense solution for smart traffic infrastructures. The Furuta pendulum is a well-known benchmark in the field of underactuated mechanical systems due to its reduced number of control inputs compared to its degrees of freedom, and richly nonlinear behavior. This work addresses the challenge of accurately modeling and controlling such a system without relying on traditional linearization techniques. In contrast to the common approach based on Lagrangian analytical modeling and state–space linearization, we propose a methodology that integrates a high-fidelity multibody model developed in Simscape Multibody (MATLAB), capturing the complete nonlinear dynamics of the system. The multibody model includes all geometric, inertial, and joint parameters of the physical hardware and interfaces directly with Simulink, enabling realistic simulation and control integration. To validate the physical fidelity of the multibody model, we perform a frequency-domain analysis of the pendulum’s natural free response. The dominant vibration frequency extracted from the simulation is compared with the theoretical prediction, demonstrating accurate capture of the system’s inertial and dynamic properties. This validation strategy strengthens the reliability of the model as a digital twin. The classical analytical formulation is provided to validate the simulation model and serve as a comparative framework. This dual modeling strategy allows for benchmarking control strategies against a trustworthy nonlinear digital twin of the Furuta pendulum. Preliminary experimental results using a physical prototype validate the feasibility of the proposed approach and set the foundation for future work in advanced nonlinear control design using the multibody representation as a digital validation tool. Many hospitals still lack digital traceability in hygiene and cleaning management, leading to operational inefficiencies and inconsistent quality control. This study aims to establish cleaning and hygiene processes in healthcare services that are planned in accordance with standards, as well as to enhance the traceability and sustainability of these processes through digitalization. This study proposes a Hyperledger Fabric-based blockchain architecture to establish a reliable and transparent quality assurance system in process management. The proposed Quality Assurance Model utilizes digital technologies and IoT-based RFID devices to ensure the transparent and reliable monitoring of cleaning processes. Operational data related to cleaning processes are automatically recorded and secured using a decentralized blockchain infrastructure. The permissioned nature of Hyperledger Fabric provides a more secure solution compared to traditional data management systems in the healthcare sector while preserving data privacy. Additionally, the execute–order–validate mechanism supports effective data sharing among stakeholders, and consensus algorithms along with chaincode rules enhance the reliability of processes. A working prototype was implemented and validated using Hyperledger Caliper under resource-constrained cloud environments, confirming the system’s feasibility through over 100 TPS throughput and zero transaction failures. Through the proposed system, cleaning/hygiene processes in patient rooms are conducted securely, contributing to the improvement of quality standards in healthcare services. Full article
