Objectives: Digitalization has revolutionized dentistry, introducing advanced technological tools that improve diagnostic accuracy and access to healthcare. This study aims to examine the effects of integrating digital technologies into the dental field, analyzing the associated benefits and risks, with particular paid attention to the therapeutic relationship and decision-making autonomy. Materials and Methods: A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library, complemented by Google Scholar for non-indexed studies. The selection criteria included peer-reviewed studies published in English between 2014 and 2024, focusing on digital dentistry, artificial intelligence, and medical ethics. This is a narrative review. Elements of PRISMA guidelines were applied to enhance transparency in reporting. Results: The analysis highlighted that although digital technologies and AI offer significant benefits, such as more accurate diagnoses and personalized treatments, there are associated risks, including the loss of empathy in the dentist–patient relationship, the risk of overdiagnosis, and the possibility of bias in the data. Conclusions: The balance between technological innovation and the centrality of the dentist is crucial. A human and ethical approach to digital medicine is essential to ensure that technologies improve patient care without compromising the therapeutic relationship. To preserve the quality of dental care, it is necessary to integrate digital technologies in a way that supports, rather than replaces, the therapeutic relationship. Full article

To enhance social interaction of residents living with dementia and their (in)formal carers in nursing homes, we examined the effects of a digital, person-centred, Photo-Activity (PA) versus a conversation activity (control). An explorative randomized controlled trial was conducted in 81 resident-informal carer (IC) dyads and 51 formal carers (FC) with three measurements (pre/post-test, 2-week follow-up). Intervention effects were tested using Mann–Whitney U’s, and ANCOVA’s with pre-test scores as covariates. Interaction effects were examined between dementia severity (DS; less/more) and condition (PA/control). A post-test effect was observed in social interaction (INTERACT-subscale: Mood [p = 0.037, ηp2 = 0.07]), with PA residents showing better mood than controls. Residents with less DS showed more positive effects of PA than residents with more DS (interaction effects: INTERACT-subscales Mood [p = 0.017, ηp2 = 0.092], Stimulation Level [p = 0.011, ηp2 = 0.106], and Need for Prompting [p = 0.013, ηp2 = 0.099]). Higher QUALIDEM Positive Affect scores were observed in the PA group, post-test (p = 0.025, ηp2 = 0.082), and follow-up (p = 0.042, d = 0.39). PA FC showed less empathy (IRI; p = 0.006, ηp2 = 0.185;) than controls, but reported getting to know the residents better (p = 0.035, r = 0.299). PA improved mood and positive affect of residents with dementia and led to FC knowing the residents better. Less empathy was observed in FC providing PA, requiring further investigation. Full article

Although smart device use among children is increasing, most interventions overlook their cognitive and emotional development or rely too heavily on external control. Such approaches often overlook the developmental needs of children for emotional regulation and autonomy. Therefore, this study aims to propose a child-centred user experience (UX) framework to support digital self-regulation in preschool-aged children. The proposed system integrates multiple psychological theories—including Piaget’s concept of animistic thinking, executive function theory, Self-Determination Theory, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy—to support cognitive and emotional regulation during screen use. Key features include persistent visual cues to enhance time awareness and behavioural anticipation, narrative-based character interactions to foster empathy and agency, and ritualised closure routines supported by multimodal and tangible interaction elements. Developed as a mobile prototype, the system was iteratively refined through two-stage consultations with child and adolescent psychiatrists and a developmental psychologist, including formative design feedback and follow-up expert review. Their feedback provided preliminary validation of the system’s developmental validity and emotional coherence. These findings suggest that affectively attuned UX design is a viable alternative to conventional control-based screen-time interventions in early childhood. Full article

Tourist satisfaction models typically assume that service performance dimensions carry the same weight for all travelers. Drawing on Bourdieu, we reconceptualize age, gender, and region of origin as demographic capital, durable resources that mediate how visitors decode service cues. Using a SERVPERF-based survey of 407 international travelers departing Quito (Ecuador), we test measurement invariance across six sociodemographic strata with multi-group confirmatory factor analysis. The four-factor SERVPERF core (Access, Lodging, Extra-hotel Services, Attractions) holds, yet partial metric invariance emerges: specific loadings flex with demographic capital. Gen-Z travelers penalize transport reliability and safety; female visitors reward cleanliness and empathy; and Latin American guests are the most critical of basic organization. These patterns expose a boundary condition for universalistic satisfaction models and elevate demographic capital from a descriptive tag to a structuring construct. Managerially, we translate the findings into segment-sensitive levers, visible security for youth and regional markets, gender-responsive facility upgrades, and dual eco-luxury versus digital-detox bundles for long-haul segments. By demonstrating when and how SERVPERF fractures across sociodemographic lines, this study intervenes in three theoretical conversations: (1) capital-based readings of consumption, (2) the search for boundary conditions in service-quality measurement, and (3) the shift from segmentation to capital-sensitive interpretation in emerging markets. The results position Ecuador as a critical case and provide a template for destinations facing similar performance–perception mismatches in the Global South. Full article

Digital transformation has reshaped knowledge creation patterns, business models, and practices within the legal industry. However, many organizations have struggled to realize the anticipated benefits of digital transformation due to individual adaptation barriers. Drawing on the Job Demands–Resources model, this study employs both regression analysis and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to investigate the mechanisms and the boundary conditions through which digital transformation job autonomy affects lawyers’ supportive behaviors toward digital change in law firms. The regression analysis of multi-wave survey data from 423 lawyers demonstrates that digital transformation job autonomy not only has a direct positive effect on lawyers’ digital transformation-supportive behaviors, but also indirectly promotes such behaviors through lawyers’ cognitive adjustment in the workplace. Furthermore, leader empathy enhances the relationship between digital transformation job autonomy and supportive behaviors. The fsQCA results identify multiple pathways leading to high and low levels of digital transformation-supportive behaviors among lawyers. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of how organizations foster individual support for digital transformation. Full article

Police officers work in high-stress environments that demand emotional resilience, interpersonal skills, and effective communication. Occupational stress can negatively impact their motivation, conflict resolution abilities, and professional effectiveness. Loving-Kindness Meditation (LKM), a mindfulness-based intervention focused on cultivating compassion and empathy, has shown promise in enhancing prosocial attitudes and emotional regulation. With the rise of short video platforms, digital interventions like video-guided LKM may offer accessible mental health support for law enforcement. This study examines the effects of short video app-guided LKM on police officers’ mindfulness, public service motivation (PSM), conflict resolution skills (CRSs), and communication skills (CSSs). It aims to determine whether LKM can enhance these psychological and professional competencies. A randomized controlled trial (RCT) was conducted with 110 active-duty police officers from a metropolitan police department in China, with 92 completing the study. Participants were randomly assigned to either the LKM group (n = 46) or the waitlist control group (n = 46). The intervention consisted of a 6-week short video app-guided LKM program with daily 10 min meditation sessions. Pre- and post-intervention assessments were conducted using several validated scales: the Mindfulness Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS), the Public Service Motivation Scale (PSM), the Conflict Resolution Styles Inventory (CRSI), and the Communication Competence Scale (CCS). A 2 (Group: LKM vs. Control) × 2 (Time: Pre vs. Post) mixed-design MANOVA was conducted to analyze the effects. Statistical analyses revealed significant group-by-time interaction effects for PSM (F(4,177) = 21.793, p < 0.001, η2 = 0.108), CRS (F(4,177) = 20.920, p < 0.001, η2 = 0.104), and CSS (F(4,177) = 49.095, p < 0.001, η2 = 0.214), indicating improvements in these areas for LKM participants. However, no significant improvement was observed for mindfulness (F(4,177) = 2.850, p = 0.930, η2 = 0.016). Short video app-guided LKM improves public service motivation, conflict resolution skills, and communication skills among police officers but does not significantly enhance mindfulness. These findings suggest that brief, digitally delivered compassion-focused programs can be seamlessly incorporated into routine in-service training to strengthen officers’ prosocial motivation, de-escalation competence, and public-facing communication, thereby fostering more constructive police–community interactions. This study investigates the potential of Far From Home, a non-digital board game, as an innovative tool for fostering empathy among university staff towards international students. International students face multifaceted challenges—linguistic barriers, cultural dissonance, and systemic inequities—yet traditional staff training often fails to cultivate the perspective-taking required for meaningful support. Using a mixed-methods approach, we analysed data from 82 participants across 10 game sessions, including surveys (n = 27), recorded gameplay observations, and semi-structured interviews (n = 6). Thematic analysis explored how role-playing as student avatars and collaborative problem-solving influenced staff empathy. The results demonstrated the game’s effectiveness in bridging cultural gaps, with participants reporting a heightened awareness of structural barriers and reduced stereotyping. Notably, the emergent findings suggested a “contrast commitment” effect, where witnessing biassed behaviours reinforced staff’s dedication to equitable practices. This study advocates for game-based training as a complement to existing programmes, with future research needed to assess longitudinal impacts. Potential applications include adapting the framework for other marginalised student groups and institutional contexts. Full article

The rising prevalence of cyberbullying in online environments has raised concerns about the well-being and safety of individuals. The objective of this research is to explore if the dark triad traits (Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and narcissism) function as mediators in the connections between maternal psychological control, paternal psychological control, cyberbullying, and cybervictimization. A sample of 1016 young adults participated in an online survey, providing self-reported data. The results revealed complex relationships among the variables examined. While most direct and indirect links were statistically significant, the direct connection between maternal psychological control and cyberbullying was significant only when paternal psychological control was not simultaneously included as a predictor. Furthermore, narcissism’s mediating effects were beneficial when Machiavellianism and psychopathy were excluded and negative otherwise. The results highlight that individuals with high degrees of parental psychological control are more prone to engage in manipulative actions and lack empathy, leading to cyberbullying and cybervictimization. Future research should disentangle the distinct roles of maternal and paternal control, investigate the interplay among dark triad traits in different social contexts, and consider how peer dynamics and digital environments may amplify or mitigate these effects. This study evaluates the effectiveness of a digital escape room designed according to the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles as an educational tool to raise awareness about school bullying and cyberbullying in lower secondary education. Using a quasi-experimental design with 137 students (66 in the control group and 71 in the experimental group), the gamified activity was compared to a traditional expository intervention. Empathy was measured using the Brief Basic Empathy Scale (BES-B), and bullying-related knowledge and experiences were assessed with the SPB-A scale. The escape room integrated key UDL principles, including multiple means of representation (e.g., video, images, text), action and expression (interactive tasks and puzzles), and engagement (narrative-based missions and collaborative challenges). The results indicate significant improvements in knowledge about behaviors related to school bullying among participants who completed the escape room. Although changes in affective and cognitive empathy were not statistically significant, positive trends were observed in the experimental group. The immersive, collaborative, and accessible nature of the activity positions the escape room as a promising tool within broader strategies for bullying prevention. Full article

Psychotherapy is an essential component of mental healthcare, yet its formal instruction within medical curricula remains underdeveloped. This scoping review aimed to map the best practices for teaching psychotherapy to medical students by examining the types of psychotherapy covered and the teaching strategies employed. A systematic search was conducted across the PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO and Google Scholar databases without time restrictions, and studies were selected if they focused on psychotherapy education for medical students. Fifteen studies met the inclusion criteria. The findings revealed that multimodal approaches, combining didactic sessions, experiential learning, clinical exposure and digital content, were the most commonly used and pedagogically effective strategies. Role play and clinical exposition were particularly valued for enhancing communication skills, empathy and therapeutic understanding, while e-learning emerged as a flexible but less frequently used tool. Motivational interviewing was the most frequently taught psychotherapeutic modality, followed by mindfulness, cognitive-behavioral therapy and psychodynamic approaches. Although the overall quality of studies was moderate to high, the heterogeneity in study design and outcome measures limited direct comparisons. These results highlight the need for standardized, experiential and integrated teaching strategies to better prepare future physicians for incorporating psychotherapy principles into clinical practice. This article investigated the potential of the digital storytelling method, within the setting of an undergraduate digital design studio, to create compelling learning experiences in architectural education. The study explored how enabling students to express their architectural concepts through digital storytelling can impact their visual communication skills and design thinking. Specifically, the research evaluated the effect of this method on student engagement, creativity, and conceptual understanding. The content analysis of student digital stories revealed four emergent categories: informative (educational-informative), inspiring (imagination-personal development), problem-solving (critical solution), and empathy and understanding (social sustainability). The study also observed the beneficial role of information and digital communication technologies in fostering positive student attitudes toward digital storytelling within a social constructivist learning environment. The integration of digital technologies and the exploration of the sources of the students’ conceptual inspiration were key components of this approach. The findings suggest that digital storytelling is a valuable instructional tool for consistently articulating the design process, from the initial concepts to the analysis, visualization, and expression. Furthermore, this method appeared to enhance the students’ creative thinking during the design process and contribute to the development of more robust conceptual design skills. Full article

This study explores the relationship between addictive behaviors, online behaviors, and adolescents’ ability to manage conflict. Effective conflict management is influenced by emotional self-regulation, empathy, and the digital environment. The literature suggests that deficits in these areas may exacerbate antisocial behavior and social adjustment difficulties. This study evaluates the influence of emotional intelligence, addictive behaviors, and online behaviors on conflict management. The hypotheses include adolescents with a high level of emotional adjustment who manage conflicts more effectively (H2) and that addictive and problematic online behaviors increase the risk of conflict escalation (H1, H3). The research involved 403 adolescents, selected through non-probabilistic methods using structured questionnaires. Statistical analysis included normality tests, Spearman’s correlations, and Mann-Whitney U tests to identify group differences. Adolescents with high emotional adjustment obtained significantly higher scores in conflict management and emotional self-regulation. Addictive and problematic online behaviors are associated with more significant difficulties in conflict management. Adolescents involved in minor crimes demonstrate deficits in emotion and conflict management. The results confirm the essential role of emotional intelligence in conflict management and the negative impact of addictive and problematic online behavior. Educational interventions promoting emotional intelligence development and responsible use of technology can reduce antisocial behaviors and improve adolescents’ social adjustment. Full article

Given the high prevalence of anxiety and depression in this group, understanding their perceptions of AI-driven mental health support is critical for effective implementation. Objectives: to evaluate nursing students’ perceptions toward AI-driven mental health support and examine its relationship with anxiety, depression, and their attitudes to seeking professional psychological help. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 176 undergraduate nursing students in northern Jordan. Results: Students reported moderately positive perceptions toward AI-driven mental health support (mean score: 36.70 ± 4.80). Multiple linear regression revealed that prior use of AI tools (β = 0.44, p < 0.0001), positive help-seeking attitudes (β = 0.41, p < 0.0001), and higher levels of psychological distress encompassing both anxiety (β = 0.29, p = 0.005) and depression (β = 0.24, p = 0.007) significantly predicted more positive perceptions. Daily AI usage was not a significant predictor (β = 0.15, p = 0.174). Logistic regression analysis further indicated that psychological distress, reflected by elevated anxiety (OR = 1.42, p = 0.002) and depression scores (OR = 1.32, p = 0.003), along with stronger help-seeking attitudes (OR = 1.35, p = 0.011), significantly increased the likelihood of using AI-based mental health support. Conclusions: AI-driven mental health tools hold promises as adjuncts to traditional counseling, particularly for nursing students experiencing psychological distress. Despite growing acceptance, concerns regarding data privacy, bias, and lack of human empathy remain. Ethical integration and blended care models are essential for effective mental health support. Embodied Conversational Agents (ECAs) serve as digital twins (DTs), visually and behaviorally mirroring human counterparts in various roles, including healthcare coaching. While existing research primarily focuses on single-coach ECAs, our work explores the benefits of multi-coach virtual health sessions, where users engage with specialized diet, physical, and cognitive coaches simultaneously. ECAs require verbal relational cues—such as empowerment, affirmation, and empathy—to foster user engagement and adherence. Our study integrates Generative AI to automate the embedding of these cues into coaching dialogues, ensuring the advice remains unchanged while enhancing delivery. We employ ChatGPT to generate empathetic and collaborative dialogues, comparing their effectiveness against manually crafted alternatives. Using three participant cohorts, we analyze user perception of the helpfulness of AI-generated versus human-generated relational cues. Additionally, we investigate whether AI-generated dialogues preserve the original advice’s semantics and whether human or automated validation better evaluates their lexical meaning. Our findings contribute to the automation of digital health coaching. Comparing ChatGPT- and human-generated dialogues for helpfulness, users rated human dialogues as more helpful, particularly for working alliance and affirmation cues, whereas AI-generated dialogues were equally effective for empowerment. By refining relational cues in AI-generated dialogues, this research paves the way for automated virtual health coaching solutions. Full article

Biosphere Reserves (BRs) represent dynamic spaces where the interdependence between nature and people is actively shaped and preserved. These territories serve as living laboratories for sustainable development, blending conservation efforts with local knowledge and cultural traditions. This paper explores how BRs exemplify the interconnection between ecological resilience and biocultural heritage, demonstrating the value of integrating traditional practices into contemporary sustainability frameworks. Using insights from the Memories of Biosphere Reserves project, which has collected over 370 testimonies from Portugal, Brazil, and São Tomé e Príncipe, this study highlights the role of memory and storytelling in reinforcing socio-ecological resilience and informing participatory conservation governance. By documenting personal experiences, traditional land-use practices, and community perceptions, these testimonies foster empathy, intergenerational learning, and ethical engagement with the environment. They also provide crucial knowledge for environmental stewardship and community-driven sustainability strategies. The article further examines the transformative role of digital technologies, open science, and artificial intelligence in preserving and disseminating biocultural heritage. Through georeferenced digital archives and participatory research, communities safeguard their cultural and ecological heritage, ensuring knowledge transmission across generations. By positioning BRs as models for integrated conservation and development, this paper underscores the importance of interconnected socio-ecological systems in achieving sustainability goals. The findings suggest that valuing and preserving biocultural heritage within BRs not only strengthens community identity and resilience, but also provides actionable pathways for addressing contemporary environmental challenges.
