Growing freshwater fish in saline environments is being explored as a potential solution to the freshwater shortage. However, growing these organisms in suboptimal salinity conditions leads to chronic stress that can be challenging to manage. To address this goal, it is crucial to improve the health of fish through the use of dietary supplements. This study evaluated the effects of varying levels of arginine supplementation on the growth, health status, and expression of stress-related molecular markers in juveniles of Nile tilapia exposed to chronic salinity stress. The tilapia were fed four experimental diets supplemented with 0, 1, 2, and 3% of L-arginine (T0, T1, T2, and T3). After an acclimatization period, the tilapias were exposed to a salinity level of 20‰ for 57 days in a recirculating aquaculture system. Our findings revealed that overall performance parameters were significantly influenced by L-arginine supplementation, except for the condition factor, viscerosomatic index, and hepatosomatic index. Additionally, intermediate levels of L-arginine supplementation positively influenced various blood parameters, including hematological profiles (hemoglobin and leukocytes), blood chemistry (total protein, albumin, globulin, and triglycerides), and the frequency of certain nuclear abnormalities. Furthermore, L-arginine supplementation appeared to regulate the expression of molecular markers related to stress and the immune system. In conclusion, this study indicates that L-arginine supplementation can help alleviate the chronic stress caused by salinity in juvenile Nile tilapia. Full article

Effective management of fecal pollutants in rural sanitation is crucial for environmental health and public safety, especially in developing regions. In this study, temporal and regional variations in nutrient elements, heavy metals, pathogenic microorganisms (PMs), and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) of fecal samples from rural toilets in China were investigated. The moisture contents of the fecal samples average 92.7%, decreasing seasonally from 97.4% in summer to 90.6% in winter. The samples’ pH values range from 6.5 to 7.5, with a slight decrease in winter (6.8), while their electrical conductivity varies from 128.1 to 2150 μs/cm, influenced by regional diets. Chromium (9.0–49.7 mg/kg) and copper (31.9–784.4 mg/kg) levels vary regionally, with higher concentrations in Anhui and Guangxi Provinces due to dietary and industrial factors. Zinc contents range from 108.5 to 1648.9 mg/kg, with higher levels in autumn and winter, resulting from agricultural practices and Zn-containing fungicides, posing potential health and phytotoxicity risks. Seasonal and regional variations in PMs and ARGs were observed. Guangxi Province shows the high PM diversity in summer samples, while Jiangsu Province exhibits the high ARGs types in autumn samples. These findings highlight the need for improved waste management and sanitation solutions in rural areas to mitigate environmental risks and protect public health. Continued research in these regions is essential to inform effective sanitation strategies. Full article

The ecological impact of crown-of-thorns starfish (CoTS; Acanthaster spp.) on coral reefs is intrinsically linked to their feeding behaviour. Management thresholds designed to mitigate coral loss driven by elevated densities of crown-of-thorns starfish rely on accurate estimates of individual feeding rates. In this study, structure-from-motion photogrammetry and intensive tracking of adult Pacific CoTS over an extended survey period were used to generate three-dimensional, high-resolution estimates of daily feeding rates. Our findings revealed substantial variation in the areal extent of coral consumed, both across consecutive days and among individuals. Notably, CoTS did not feed consistently; feeding occurred on 65% of observation days, with 2–3 days periods of inactivity common. Despite this variability, mean daily feeding rates aligned with previous studies (1.35 coral colonies d−1; 198.4 cm2 day−1 planar area, and 998.83 cm2 day−1 three-dimensional surface area). Across all tracked individuals (n = 8), feeding was recorded on 17 coral genera; however, Acropora alone accounted for 51% of colonies consumed and contributed 82% of the total three-dimensional surface area ingested during the survey period. This highlights the disproportionately large feeding yield derived from Acropora-dominated diets and raises important questions about how future declines in Acropora cover may impact CoTS feeding success and energetic intake. We studied Galápagos barn owls on Santa Cruz Island in the Galápagos Archipelago. We collected and analyzed pellets to determine diet composition. Barn-owl diet consisted—in terms of biomass—of ~89% rodents and ~10% insects. Bird remains occurred in 1% of the pellets. Foraging was studied with data loggers, a method not previously applied to the study of Galápagos barn owls. Owls rested during the day in natural and human-built roosts such as lava holes, trees, or huts. Night-time foraging was characterized by periods during which the bird moved and periods during which the bird stayed within one place, with the latter amounting to ~56% of the time away from the day roost. Birds began foraging shortly after sunset and returned to their day roost before sunrise. The duration of foraging was approximately 11 h per night. Foraging areas were small (median value: 0.28 km2). Although our data demonstrate a continued presence of the subspecies, we regard the situation for this subspecies as labile, as multiple threats, such as road kills, poisoning, and intentional killing by farmers, have increased recently, and suggest the development of a management plan to improve its conservation. Obesity-Induced MASLD Is Reversed by Capsaicin via Hepatic TRPV1 Activation

Background and Objectives: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is a progressive liver disorder associated with metabolic risk factors such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. If left untreated, the accumulation of excess hepatic fat can lead to inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and ultimately liver failure. Capsaicin (CAP), the primary pungent compound in chili peppers, has previously been shown to prevent weight gain in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity models. In this study, we investigated the potential of dietary CAP to prevent HFD-induced MASLD. Methods: C57BL/6 mice were fed an HFD (60% kcal from fat) with or without 0.01% CAP supplementation for 26 weeks. We evaluated CAP’s effects on hepatic fat accumulation, inflammation, and mitochondrial function to determine its role in preventing MASLD. Results: CAP acts as a potent and selective agonist of the transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) channel. We confirmed TRPV1 expression in the liver and demonstrated that CAP activates hepatic TRPV1, thereby preventing steatosis, improving insulin sensitivity, reducing inflammation, and enhancing fatty acid oxidation. These beneficial effects were observed in wild-type but not in TRPV1 knockout mice. Mechanistically, CAP-induced TRPV1 activation promotes calcium influx and activates AMPK, which leads to SIRT1-dependent upregulation of PPARα and PGC-1α, enhancing mitochondrial biogenesis and lipid metabolism. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that dietary CAP prevents MASLD through TRPV1 activation. TRPV1 signaling represents a promising therapeutic target for the prevention and management of MASLD in individuals with metabolic disorders. Full article

Background: Burnout syndrome (BS) is an occupational phenomenon resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. Although there are underlying causes associated with personal attributes, it is generally linked to external factors within the work environment. The aim of the present study was to investigate the impact of lifestyle factors on BS and its dimensions, as well as on suicidal ideation among Spanish professionals dedicated to implant dentistry. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted in accordance with the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) guidelines. An electronic survey based on the Maslach Burnout Inventory—Human Services Survey (MBI–HSS) was distributed to members of the Spanish Society of Implants. The data were analysed using descriptive statistical methods. Results: A total of 305 participants (20.9%) responded to the questionnaire. Notably, 10.8% of the professionals reported experiencing suicidal thoughts, a factor significantly associated with the presence of BS. The lifestyle factors associated with BS included the following: not engaging in aerobic exercise for at least 30 min per day (p < 0.05), not having hobbies that facilitate mental disconnection from work (p < 0.001), not following a balanced diet (p < 0.0001), having an insufficient social life (p < 0.0001), and experiencing suicidal ideation (p < 0.01). Conclusions: The surveyed dentists generally reported having healthy lifestyle habits. Nevertheless, one in ten professionals acknowledged having experienced suicidal ideation at some point, highlighting a concerning association with BS. Full article

Urban wildlife conservation is emerging as a critical component of sustainable city ecosystems. Rather than simply increasing tree abundance or species richness, conservation management should focus on key species. In this research, Xishan Forest Park in Beijing was chosen as a case study. Our aim was to identify keystone taxa critical for avian foraging and nesting during the breeding season. We performed a network analysis linking bird species, their diets, and nest plants. Dietary components were detected using DNA metabarcoding conducted with avian fecal samples. Nest plants were identified via transect surveys. Two indices of the network, degree and weighted mean degree, were calculated to evaluate the importance of the dietary and nest plant species. We identified 13 bird host species from 107 fecal samples and 14 bird species from 107 nest observations. Based on the degree indices, fruit trees Morus and Prunus were detected as key food sources, exhibiting both the highest degree (degree = 9, 9) and weighted mean degree (lnwMD = 5.21, 4.63). Robinia pseudoacacia provided predominant nesting sites, with a predominant degree of 7. A few taxa, such as Styphnolobium japonicum and Rhamnus parvifolia, served dual ecological significance as both essential food sources and nesting substrates. Scrublands, as a unique habitat type, provided nesting sites and food for small-bodied birds. Therefore, targeted management interventions are recommended to sustain or enhance these keystone resource species and to maintain the multi-layered vertical vegetation structure to preserve the diverse habitats of birds. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a clinicopathological syndrome characterised by hepatic steatosis in the absence of significant alcohol consumption or other specific causes of liver injury. It has become one of the leading causes of liver dysfunction worldwide. However, the precise pathophysiological mechanisms underlying NAFLD remain unclear, and effective therapeutic strategies are still under investigation. Autophagy, a vital intracellular process in eukaryotic cells, enables the degradation and recycling of cytoplasmic components through a membrane trafficking pathway. Recent studies have demonstrated a strong association between impaired or deficient autophagy and the development and progression of NAFLD. Restoring autophagic function may represent a key approach to mitigating hepatocellular injury. Nevertheless, due to the complexity of autophagy regulation and its context-dependent effects on cellular function, therapeutic strategies targeting autophagy in NAFLD remain limited. This review aims to summarise the relationship between autophagy and NAFLD, focusing on autophagy as a central mechanism. We discuss the latest research advances regarding interventions such as diet and exercise, pharmacological therapies (including modern pharmacological therapy and plant-derived compounds), and other approaches (such as hormones, nanoparticles, gut microbiota, and vitamins). Furthermore, we briefly highlight potential autophagy-related molecular targets that may offer novel therapeutic insights for NAFLD management. Full article

The enteroendocrine system of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is the largest endocrine organ in the human body, playing a central role in the regulation of hunger, satiety, digestion, and energy homeostasis. Numerous factors—including dietary components, physical activity, and the gut microbiota—affect the secretion of GI hormones. This study aims to analyze how these factors modulate enteroendocrine function and influence systemic metabolic regulation. This review synthesizes the current scientific literature on the physiology and distribution of enteroendocrine cells and mechanisms of hormone secretion in response to macronutrients, physical activity, and microbial metabolites. Special attention is given to the interactions between gut-derived signals and central nervous system pathways involved in appetite control. Different GI hormones are secreted in specific regions of the digestive tract in response to meal composition and timing. Macronutrients, particularly during absorption, stimulate hormone release, while physical activity influences hormone concentrations, decreasing ghrelin and increasing GLP-1, PYY, and leptin levels. The gut microbiota, through fermentation and metabolite production (e.g., SCFAs and bile acids), modulates enteroendocrine activity. Species such as Akkermansia muciniphila are associated with improved gut barrier integrity and enhanced GLP-1 secretion. These combined effects contribute to appetite regulation and energy balance. Diet composition, physical activity, and gut microbiota are key modulators of gastrointestinal hormone secretion. Their interplay significantly affects appetite regulation and metabolic health. A better understanding of these relationships may support the development of personalized strategies for managing obesity and related disorders. Full article

Background/Objectives: Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by small intestinal enteropathy triggered by gluten ingestion, often associated with gut dysbiosis. The most effective treatment is strict adherence to a gluten-free diet (GFD), which alleviates symptoms. This study uniquely integrates taxonomic, functional, and resistance profiling to evaluate the gut microbiota of women with CD on a GFD. Methods: To evaluate the long-term impact of a GFD, this study analyzed the gut microbiota of 10 women with CD on a GFD for over a year compared to 10 healthy controls with unrestricted diets. Taxonomic diversity (16S rRNA gene sequencing and the analysis of α and β-diversity), metabolic functionality (Biolog EcoPlates®), and antibiotic resistance profiles (Cenoantibiogram) were assessed. Results: Metagenomic analysis revealed no significant differences in taxonomic diversity but highlighted variations in the abundance of specific bacterial genera. Women with CD showed increased proportions of Bacteroides, Streptococcus, and Clostridium, associated with inflammation, but also elevated levels of beneficial genera such as Roseburia, Oxalobacter, and Paraprevotella. Despite no significant differences in metabolic diversity, higher minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) in women in the healthy control group suggest that dietary substrates in unrestricted diets may promote the proliferation of fast-growing bacteria capable of rapidly developing and disseminating antibiotic resistance mechanisms. Conclusions: These findings indicate that prolonged adherence to a GFD in CD supports remission of gut dysbiosis, enhances microbiota functionality, and may reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance, emphasizing the importance of dietary management in CD. The oral–gut microbiota axis is a relatively new field of research. Although most studies have focused separately on the oral and gut microbiota, emerging evidence has highlighted that the two microbiota are interconnected and may influence each other through various mechanisms shaping systemic health. The aim of this review is therefore to provide an overview of the interactions between oral and gut microbiota, and the influence of diet and related metabolites on this axis. Pathogenic oral bacteria, such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum, can migrate to the gut through the enteral route, particularly in individuals with weakened gastrointestinal defenses or conditions like gastroesophageal reflux disease, contributing to disorders like inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer. Bile acids, altered by gut microbes, also play a significant role in modulating these microbiota interactions and inflammatory responses. Oral bacteria can also spread via the bloodstream, promoting systemic inflammation and worsening some conditions like cardiovascular disease. Translocation of microorganisms can also take place from the gut to the oral cavity through fecal–oral transmission, especially within poor sanitary conditions. Some metabolites including short-chain fatty acids, trimethylamine N-oxide, indole and its derivatives, bile acids, and lipopolysaccharides produced by both oral and gut microbes seem to play central roles in mediating oral–gut interactions. The complex interplay between oral and gut microbiota underscores their crucial role in maintaining systemic health and highlights the potential consequences of dysbiosis at both the oral and gastrointestinal level. Some dietary patterns and nutritional compounds including probiotics and prebiotics seem to exert beneficial effects both on oral and gut microbiota eubiosis. Colony Nutrition Enhances Bee Resilience to Fungicides, While the Benefit of Propolis Supplementation Depends on Stress Conditions

Enhanced colony nutrition can support brood development, resulting in better physiological conditions and increased resilience in adult honey bees, particularly under stress. This study investigated the effects of colony nutrition and adult dietary supplementation with green propolis on bee health under fungicide exposure. Colonies were managed under food restriction or nutritional supplementation for 22 weeks. Newly emerged bees from each colony were then caged and fed protein diets consisting of honey-pollen patties contaminated or not with fungicide, and sucrose sugar syrup with or without aqueous green propolis extract. Bees from supplemented colonies showed greater body weight, higher hemolymph protein levels, and higher consumption of protein food after seven days in cages. Fungicide exposure reduced hemolymph protein levels, altered the expression of detoxification and immune-related genes, and significantly decreased bee survival. Interestingly, propolis supplementation alone changed gene expression patterns and slightly reduced longevity compared to bees not exposed to propolis or fungicide. However, under fungicide stress, bees that ingested propolis survived longer, indicating a protective effect. While colony nutritional supplementation clearly promotes honey bee resilience against fungicide exposure, feeding propolis also showed promising effects, though further studies are needed to determine an optimal dietary concentration. Nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI) is a rare hereditary disorder characterized by renal resistance to arginine vasopressin (AVP), resulting in the kidneys’ inability to concentrate urine. Approximately 90% of NDI cases follow an X-linked inheritance pattern and are associated with pathogenic variants in the AVPR2 gene, which encodes the vasopressin receptor type 2. The remaining 10% are attributed to mutations in the AQP2 gene, which encodes aquaporin-2, and may follow either autosomal dominant or recessive inheritance patterns. We present the case of a male infant, younger than nine months of age, who was clinically diagnosed with NDI at six months. The patient presented recurrent episodes of polydipsia, polyuria, dehydration, hypernatremia, and persistently low urine osmolality. Despite adjustments in pharmacologic treatment and strict monitoring of urinary output, the clinical response remained suboptimal. Given the lack of improvement and the radiological finding of an absent posterior pituitary (neurohypophysis), the possibility of coexistent central diabetes insipidus (CDI) was raised, prompting a therapeutic trial with desmopressin. Nevertheless, in the absence of clinical improvement, desmopressin was discontinued. The patient’s management was continued with hydrochlorothiazide, ibuprofen, and a high-calorie diet restricted in sodium and protein, resulting in progressive clinical stabilization. Whole-exome sequencing identified a novel homozygous missense variant in the AQP2 gene (c.398T > A; p.Val133Glu), classified as likely pathogenic according to the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) criteria: PM2 (absent from population databases), PP2 (missense variant in a gene with a low rate of benign missense variation), and PP3 (multiple lines of computational evidence supporting a deleterious effect)]. NDI is typically diagnosed during early infancy due to the early onset of symptoms and the potential for severe complications if left untreated. In this case, although initial clinical suspicion included concomitant CDI, the timely initiation of supportive management and the subsequent incorporation of molecular diagnostics facilitated a definitive diagnosis. The identification of a previously unreported homozygous variant in AQP2 contributed to diagnostic confirmation and therapeutic decision-making. The diagnosis and comprehensive management of NDI within the context of polyuria-polydipsia syndrome necessitates a multidisciplinary approach, integrating clinical evaluation with advanced molecular diagnostics. The novel AQP2 c.398T > A (p.Val133Glu) variant described herein was associated with early and severe clinical manifestations, underscoring the importance of genetic testing in atypical or treatment-refractory presentations of diabetes insipidus. Background/Objectives: Estrogen deficiency contributes to dyslipidemia and visceral adiposity, increasing cardiovascular risk in postmenopausal women. Sargassum fulvellum (Sf), a brown seaweed rich in bioactive compounds, possesses lipid-regulating properties that may be enhanced by lactic acid bacteria fermentation. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of fermented S. fulvellum (SfLlLm), prepared using Lactococcus lactis and Leuconostoc mesenteroides, on lipid metabolism and adipose tissue remodeling in an ovariectomized (OVX) mouse model of estrogen deficiency. Methods: Female C57BL/6 mice underwent ovariectomy and were fed an AIN-76A diet supplemented with either unfermented Sf or SfLlLm for eight weeks. Sham-operated and 17β-estradiol-treated OVX groups served as controls. Serum lipid levels—total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-C, and HDL-C—were assessed, and histological analysis of visceral adipose tissue was conducted to evaluate adipocyte morphology. Results: OVX-induced estrogen deficiency led to increased total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL-C, along with hypertrophic changes in visceral adipocytes. Supplementation with fermented Sargassum fulvellum (SfLlLm) markedly improved these parameters, reducing total cholesterol by 6.7%, triglycerides by 9.3%, and LDL-C by 52.9%, while increasing HDL-C by 17.5% compared to the OVX controls. SfLlLm also normalized visceral adipocyte size and distribution. These effects were comparable to or exceeded those of 17β-estradiol treatment. Conclusions: Fermented SfLlLm ameliorated dyslipidemia and visceral adiposity under estrogen-deficient conditions. These findings support its potential as a functional dietary intervention for managing postmenopausal lipid disorders and associated metabolic complications. Full article

According to the National Institutes of Health, approximately 465 million individuals are affected by type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and could benefit from managing their condition with a high-quality diet based on proper, nutrient-rich food choices. A plant-based diet not only has health benefits but also helps mitigate climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but the Mediterranean diet has the most beneficial effect on overall health. In contrast, ultra-processed foods have a negative impact on T2DM outcomes. Reviewing the nutritional profile of different meals, snacks and desserts would be helpful in enhancing their quality, strengthening the role of dietitians and doctors and protecting against T2DM complications. This approach would also increase simplification and education for consumers. The PubMed-Medline, Web of Science, Scopus and Cochrane Library databases were searched for relevant articles published up to May, from 2000 (based on publication date). The results support the need to reinforce health claims and highlight public demand for food choices while also improving patient quality of life. Full article
