Automotive components’ exposure to prolonged random loading not only accumulates fatigue damage but also causes material stiffness degradation. The degradation of material mechanical properties leads to stress redistribution within the structure, which in turn affects the structural fatigue life. Conventional frequency-domain fatigue life analysis methods often fail to take into account performance degradation, whereas time-domain approaches are constrained by computational inefficiency in dynamic response calculations. To address this, a time-domain fatigue life analysis is proposed, integrating Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks with performance degradation modeling. First, short-term dynamic response data of engineering structures that contain stiffness degradation parameters are utilized to establish a training set, and an LSTM surrogate model is trained to rapidly predict stress responses in time- and degree-varying structural performance degradation. Second, the time-varying dynamic responses obtained from the LSTM surrogate model are related to the principles the fatigue damage accumulation and Miner’s criterion to quantify the stiffness degradation effects. A computational framework has been developed for fatigue life prediction through iterative alternation between dynamic response calculations and fatigue damage assessments. Case studies on notched plates demonstrate that the LSTM surrogate model approach ensures accuracy while reducing structural fatigue life analysis time by more than three orders of magnitude compared to the finite element method (FEM). Under the application of 20,000s random road loads, the damage value of the reinforced plate obtained by the surrogate model method that takes into account performance degradation is lower by 10–25% compared to that calculated by the frequency-domain or time-domain methods that neglect degradation. To address the insulation degradation caused by moisture intrusion due to damage to the outer sheath of power cables, this study systematically analyzed the charge transport characteristics of XLPE cables at different water immersion stages using polarization/depolarization current (PDC) measurements. An evaluation method for assessing water immersion levels was proposed based on conductivity, charge density, and charge mobility. Experiments were conducted on commercial 10 kV XLPE cable samples subjected to accelerated water immersion for durations ranging from 0 to 30 days. PDC data were collected via a custom-built three-electrode measurement platform. The results indicated that with increasing immersion time, the decay rate of polarization/depolarization currents slowed, the steady-state current amplitude rose significantly, and the DC conductivity increased from 1.86 × 10−17 S/m to 2.70 × 10−15 S/m—a nearly two-order-of-magnitude increase. The Pearson correlation coefficient between charge mobility and immersion time reached 0.96, indicating a strong positive correlation. Additional tests on XLPE insulation slices showed a rapid rise in conductivity during early immersion, a decrease in breakdown voltage from 93.64 kV to 66.70 kV, and enhanced space charge accumulation under prolonged immersion and higher electric fields. The proposed dual-parameter criterion (conductivity and charge mobility) effectively distinguishes between early and advanced stages of cable water immersion, offering a practical approach for non-destructive assessment of insulation conditions and early detection of moisture intrusion, with significant potential for application in predictive maintenance and insulation diagnostics. A methane-air premixed gas explosion is one of the most destructive disasters in the process of coal mining, and the dynamic coupling between the shock wave triggered by the explosion and the surrounding rock of the roadway can lead to the destabilization of the surrounding rock structure, the destruction of equipment, and casualties. The aim of this study is to systematically reveal the propagation characteristics of the blast wave, the spatial and temporal evolution of the wall load, and the damage mechanism of the surrounding rock by establishing a two-way fluid-solid coupling numerical model. Based on the Ansys Fluent fluid solver and Transient Structure module, a framework for the co-simulation of the fluid and solid domains has been constructed by adopting the standard kε turbulence model, finite-rate/eddy-dissipation (FR/ED) reaction model, and nonlinear finite-element theory, and by introducing a dynamic damage threshold criterion based on the Drucker–Prager and Mohr–Coulomb criteria. It is shown that methane concentration significantly affects the kinetic behavior of explosive shock wave propagation. Under chemical equivalence ratio conditions (9.5% methane), an ideal Chapman–Jouguet blast wave structure was formed, exhibiting the highest energy release efficiency. In contrast, lean ignition (7%) and rich ignition (12%) conditions resulted in lower efficiencies due to incomplete combustion or complex combustion patterns. In addition, the pressure time-history evolution of the tunnel enclosure wall after ignition triggering exhibits significant nonlinear dynamics, which can be divided into three phases: the initiation and turbulence development phase, the quasi-steady propagation phase, and the expansion and dissipation phase. Further analysis reveals that the closed end produces significant stress aggregation due to the interference of multiple reflected waves, while the open end increases the stress fluctuation due to turbulence effects. The spatial and temporal evolution of the strain field also follows a three-stage dynamic pattern: an initial strain-induced stage, a strain accumulation propagation stage, and a residual strain stabilization stage and the displacement is characterized by an initial phase of concentration followed by gradual expansion. This study not only deepens the understanding of methane-air premixed gas explosion and its interaction with the roadway’s surrounding rock, but also provides an important scientific basis and technical support for coal mine safety production. Transmission towers constitute critical power infrastructure, yet structural damage may accumulate over their long-term service, underscoring the paramount importance of research on damage identification. This paper presents a cross-correlation function amplitude vector (CorV) method for damage localization based on time-domain response analysis. The approach involves calculating the CorV of structural members before and after damage using dynamic response data, employing the CorV assurance criterion (CVAC) to quantify changes in CorV, and introducing first-order differencing for damage localization. Taking an actual transmission tower in Jiangmen as the engineering backdrop, a finite element model is established. Damage conditions are simulated by reducing the stiffness of specific members, and parameter analyses are conducted to validate the proposed method. Furthermore, experimental validation in a lab is performed to provide additional confirmation. The results indicate that the CVAC value of the damaged structure is significantly lower than that in the healthy state. By analyzing the relative changes in the components of CorV, the damage location can be accurately determined. Notably, this method only requires acquiring the time-domain response signals of the transmission tower under random excitation to detect both the existence and location of damage. Consequently, it is well suited for structural health monitoring of transmission towers under environmental excitation. Full article

The development of shale bedding and fractures exacerbates the invasion of drilling fluid, leading to significant reservoir damage. This article elucidates the strength degradation behavior of shale with bedding orientations of 0° and 90° under drilling fluid immersion, as determined through triaxial compression experiments. An improved Hooke–Brown anisotropic strength criterion has been established to quantitatively characterize the degradation effects. Additionally, a dynamic mechanism of pore pressure accumulation was simulated. The research findings indicate the following: (1) As the intrusion pressure increases from 6 MPa to 8 MPa, the penetration depth significantly increases. In the horizontal bedding direction (0°), cracks dominate the flow mode, resulting in a sudden drop in strength; (2) An increase in bedding density or opening exacerbates the degree of invasion and strength degradation in the horizontal bedding direction, with a degradation rate exceeding 40%. In contrast, the vertical bedding direction is influenced by permeability anisotropy and crack blockage, leading to limited seepage and minimal degradation. By optimizing the dosage of emulsifiers and other treatment agents through orthogonal experiments, a low-viscosity, high-shear-strength plugging oil-based drilling fluid system was developed, effectively reducing the invasion depth of the drilling fluid by over 30%. The primary innovations of this article include the establishment of a quantitative model for Reynolds number degradation for the first time, which elucidates the mechanism of accelerated crack propagation during turbulent transition (when the Reynolds number exceeds the critical value of 10). Additionally, a novel method for synergistic control between sealing and rheology is introduced, significantly decreasing the degradation rate of horizontal bedding. Furthermore, the development of the Darcy–Forchheimer partitioning algorithm addresses the issue of prediction bias exceeding 15% in high-Reynolds-number regions (Re > 30). The research findings provide a crucial theoretical foundation and data support for the optimized design of drilling fluids. Full article

This study proposes a novel numerical approach to simulate damage accumulation and failure in polymer materials under thermal fatigue, using an entropy-based damage criterion. Unlike the many experimental studies in this area, few numerical simulations exist due to the complexity of modeling thermal fatigue. In our method, thermal and mechanical stresses arising from thermal expansion mismatches and temperature gradients are modeled through a coupled simulation approach. A viscoelastic constitutive equation is implemented in ABAQUS via a user-defined subroutine to capture damage progression. The method includes surface and internal thermal conduction, thermal deformation, and time–temperature superposition using reduced viscosity, enabling accurate simulation under varying thermal conditions. The results show that localized thermal stresses induced by temperature gradients lead to progressive damage and failure. This study demonstrates the first successful numerical simulation of thermal fatigue-induced damage in polymer materials. The proposed framework reduces the need for extensive experiments and offers insights into residual stress prediction and durability evaluation, contributing to polymer design and application in high-performance environments. Due to the complexity of the landing gear’s (LG) structural integrity and its loads under various static or dynamic working conditions, the fatigue life assessment for LG is a highly challenging task. On the basis of the whole geometric model of a large passenger aircraft’s main landing gear (MLG), the quasi-static finite element model (FEM) of the whole MLG is established, and the high-cycle fatigue issue of the Main Fitting (MF) is studied by considering the variation in shock absorber travel (SAT). Firstly, the ground loads under actual fatigue conditions are equivalently converted into the forces acting on the center of the left and right axles of the MLG, and based on these spatial force decompositions, the magnitude and direction of the load for 12 different basic unit load cases (ULC) are obtained. That is, the stress of the MLG under actual fatigue conditions can be obtained by superimposing these ULCs. Then, considering that the SAT of the MLG varies under different fatigue conditions, and to reduce the number of finite element (FE) simulations, this article simplifies all the SAT experienced by the MLG into seven specific values, so as to establish seven quasi-static FEMs of the MLG with the specified stroke of the shock absorber. In this way, the fatigue stress of the MLG with any actual SAT can be obtained by interpolating the stress components of the seven FEMs. Only 84 FE simulations are needed to efficiently obtain the fatigue stress spectra from the ground load spectra. Finally, according to the material S-N curve and Miner’s damage accumulation criterion, evaluate the fatigue life of the Main Fitting. The results of the stress component interpolation and superposition method show that at least five different SATs of the whole MLG’s FEM are needed to effectively convert the fatigue loads into a stress spectrum. The fatigue life prediction results indicate that the minimum lifespan of the MF is 53164 landings, which means that the fatigue life meets the requirement design. Full article

In this study, micro-scale numerical simulations were performed to evaluate the residual strength of carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRPs) subjected to cyclic transverse and out-of-plane shear loading fatigue. The simulations utilized a finite element method, incorporating an entropy-based damage criterion for the matrix resin. This method aimed to link entropy generation to strength degradation, with the parameter αo(s) determined as a function of entropy. Cyclic tensile and shear analyses were conducted to correlate residual strength with entropy accumulation, establishing a linear relationship for αo(s). The results demonstrated meso-scale strength degradation based on micro-scale numerical simulations. Material constants for the epoxy resin matrix were determined through creep and tensile tests, and a generalized Maxwell model with 15 elements was used to represent viscoelastic behavior. Numerical simulations employed the Abaqus/Standard 2020 software, with the epoxy resin matrix behavior implemented via a UMAT subroutine. The analysis revealed a linear relationship between entropy and residual strength for both cyclic tensile and out-of-plane shear loading. This approach enhances experimental insights with numerical predictions, offering a comprehensive understanding of CFRP strength degradation under fatigue loading. This study represents the first numerical approach to link the entropy of the matrix resin at the micro-scale with macro-scale residual strength in CFRP, providing a novel and comprehensive framework for understanding and predicting strength degradation under cyclic loading. Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) represents a refined categorization of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), highlighting the intricate relationship between hepatic steatosis and metabolic dysfunction. Abdominal obesity (AO), a key diagnostic criterion for metabolic dysfunction, predominantly results from inappropriate diet and unhealthy dietary habits. To comprehensively investigate which dietary factors contribute to MASLD through AO and to understand the underlying biological mechanisms, we initially conducted a systematic review of meta-analysis articles in the PubMed database from the past decade, summarizing dietary factors that affect AO. Subsequently, we conducted targeted searches in the PubMed database for these dietary factors and provided a narrative review of the mechanisms of how these dietary factors lead to AO and how AO exacerbates MASLD. A diet characterized by excessive intake of energy, carbohydrates, fructose, or ultra-processed foods (UPFs) is considered inappropriate. Inappropriate diet leads to the formation of MASLD and AO by enhancing pathways such as de novo lipid synthesis (DNL) in the liver, insulin resistance (IR), gut–liver dysfunction, and inflammation. Dietary interventions for inappropriate diets can effectively intervene in and improve MASLD and AO. The mechanism of inappropriate diet on abdominal fat deposition is through excessive energy or the activation of the enzyme 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11β-HSD-1) to increase endocortisol secretion. Then, the excessive accumulation of visceral fat facilitates a rapid and augmented flux of free fatty acids (FFAs) to the liver and initiates a series of deleterious effects, including oxidative stress (OS), endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS), activation of protein kinase C (PKC) pathways, and inflammation. Additionally, FFAs may mediate excessive lipid deposition and hepatocellular damage through the action of hormones. These pathways to liver damage exacerbate MASLD and progression to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) and fibrosis. Furthermore, investigating other potential mechanisms by which AO may influence MASLD could offer new recommendations for the treatment guidelines of MASLD. Full article

During the process of mining underground coal, the coal emits a large amount of methane into the mining space, which may lead to methane accumulation and exceed explosion safety limits When the methane encounters a fire source, a methane explosion may occur. The forceful impact caused by a methane explosion in an underground roadway can cause serious damage to the roadway structures and even lead to the collapse of the ventilation system. At the same time, the explosion impact may result in the death of workers and cause physical injury to the surviving workers. Therefore, it is necessary to study the damage effect and injury range of methane explosions. On the basis of the damage criteria and damage characteristics of methane explosions, according to the overpressure distribution of shock waves in the propagation process of a methane explosion, the explosion hazard range is divided into four ranges (from inside to outside): death range, serious injury range, minor injury range, and safety range. Four injury degrees of shock wave overpressure to personal body (slight, medium, serious injury, death), and seven damage degrees of overpressure to structures are also analyzed. The thresholds of their damage (destruction) are determined. On this basis, an experimental system and numerical simulation are constructed to measure damage characteristics, the overpressure value, and the range distance of a methane explosion with different initial explosion intensities. According to the experimental and numerical results, the attenuation formula of a methane explosion shock wave in the propagation process is derived. The research results show that the overpressure and impulse of shock waves are selected as the damage criteria for comprehensive evaluation, and the overpressure criterion is suitable of determining the injury (failure) range over long distances. The four injury ranges are in line with the actual situation and are reasonable. The injury degree also conforms to the medical results, which can be used to guide the injury degree of mine methane explosions. The injury range caused by methane explosions with different initial explosion intensities is reasonable and is basically consistent with the on-site situation. The derived attenuation formula and calculated safety distance are in good agreement with the experimental and numerical results. The research results can provide guidance and help in the escape, rescue, and protection of coal mine underground person. Full article

This study aims to explore the impact of load history on the premature failure of the viscoelastic polymer matrix in carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRPs) using a method based on the concept of fracture fatigue entropy (FFE). A user-defined subroutine (UMAT) developed by the authors in previous studies was incorporated to apply the FFE damage criterion using ABAQUS software. Several variable-amplitude load modes, including frequent load amplitude changes and intermittent interruptions, were designed based on the conventional linear damage accumulation method (Palmgren–Miner rule), and the fatigue life under these loadings was obtained via numerical simulations. The results show that both frequent amplitude changes and even brief pauses in loading can accelerate damage accumulation, leading to premature failure of the polymer matrix. In these scenarios, the fatigue life ranged from 33.6% to 91.9% of the predictions made using the Palmgren–Miner rule, which shows significant variation and highlights cases in which the predicted fatigue life falls far short of expectations. This study offers a more practical and reliable approach for predicting fatigue life under complex loading conditions. Since the accuracy of the FFE criterion has been comprehensively validated in previous studies, this research focuses on its application to predict failure under variable loading conditions. Twin-roll casting is a technology for the production of thin strips directly from liquid metal by combining continuous casting with hot rolling in a single step. The thermo-mechanical cyclic interaction with the solidifying strip causes fatigue crack formation at the outer surface of the rolls. A 2D FEM model with Eulerian boundary conditions and the interference fit load on the rolls was defined. The influence of the roll–strip thermal contact, the inlet temperature of the liquid aluminum, the efficiency of the water cooling and the production rate on the fatigue damage of the rolls was analyzed with a parametric study. The maximum temperature of the rolls, the maximum contact pressure, the accumulated plastic strain and the equivalent strain computed (considering a multiaxial out-of-phase fatigue criterion) were considered to investigate the thermo-mechanical fatigue load on the rolls. The results showed that, in the considered range, the most influential parameters on the fatigue mechanism are the heat contact conductance coefficient, which dominates the thermo-mechanical load, and the tangential velocity of the rolls, which contributes to the thermal field and determines the roll–strip mechanical contact interaction. On the basis of “Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutral” goals, carbon sequestration projects are increasing in China. The integrity of cement sheaths, as an important factor affecting carbon sequestration projects, has also received more attention and research. When CO2 is injected into the subsurface from sequestration wells, the cement sheath may mechanically fail due to the pressure accumulated inside the casing, which leads to the sealing of the cement sheath failing. The elasticity and strength parameters of the cement sheath are considered in this paper. The critical bottom-hole injection pressures of inclined well sections under anisotropic formation stresses at different depths were calculated for actual carbon-sealing wells in the X block—the CO2 sequestration target block. The sensitivity factors of the critical bottom-hole injection pressure were also analyzed. It was found that the cement sheath damage criterion was tensile damage. The Young’s modulus and tensile strength of the cement sheath are the main factors affecting the mechanical failure of the cement sheath, with Poisson’s ratio having the second highest influence. An increase in the Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, and tensile strength of the cement sheath can help to improve the mechanical stability of cement sheaths in CO2 sequestration wells. This model can be used for the design and evaluation of cement in carbon sequestration wells. Full article

In this study, we investigated the micromechanical deformation and damage behavior of commercially extruded and additively manufactured 316L stainless steels (AMed SS316L) by combining experimental examinations and crystal plasticity modeling. The AMed alloy was fabricated using the laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) technique with an orthogonal scanning strategy to control the directionality of the as-fabricated material. Optical microscopy and electron backscatter diffraction measurements revealed distinct grain morphologies and crystallographic textures in the two alloys. Uniaxial tensile test results suggested that the LPBFed alloy exhibited an increased yield strength, reduced elongation, and comparable ultimate tensile strength in comparison to those of the extruded alloy. A microstructure-based crystal plasticity model was developed to simulate the micromechanical deformation behavior of the alloys using representative volume elements based on realistic microstructures. A ductile fracture criterion based on the microscopically dissipated plastic energy on a slip system was adopted to predict the microscopic damage accumulation of the alloys during plastic deformation. The developed model could accurately predict the stress–strain behavior and evolution of the crystallographic textures in both the alloys. We reveal that the increased yield strength in the LPBFed alloy, compared to that in the extruded alloy, is attributed to the higher as-manufactured dislocation density and the cellular subgrain structure, resulting in a reduced elongation. The presence of annealing twins and favorable texture in the extruded alloy contributed to its excellent elongation, along with a higher hardening rate owing to twin–dislocation interactions during plastic deformation. Moreover, the grain morphology and defect state (e.g., dislocations and twins) in the initial state can significantly affect strain localization and damage accumulation in alloys. Full article

Wind turbines and floating platform upsizing are major trends in the current offshore wind development. However, harsh environmental conditions increase the risk of anchor dragging and mooring failure when deploying large offshore floating wind turbines. Therefore, it is necessary to design a mooring system for the specific deployment site. This study aims to perform the mooring system design of a floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) operated in the South China Sea, which is a combination of the IEA 15 MW wind turbine and UMaine VolturnUS-S floating platform. Hydrodynamic coefficients were calculated based on the potential flow theory, considering the environmental loads in the South China Sea. Additionally, the hydrodynamic coefficients were imported into AQWA to calculate the time-domain mooring tension. The mooring design parameters, such as mooring line length, nominal sizes, and anchor point, were determined using the criterion of anchor uplift, maximum breaking strength, and fatigue life, respectively. The design criterion required that the anchor uplift is not more than the allowable value, the long-term breaking limit of mooring with a 100-year return period should be less than the maximum breaking limit, and the fatigue damage accumulation in 50 years should be safe. The mooring design procedure provides a reference for mooring system design and safe operation of large floating wind turbines in the South China Sea. Full article
