In response to the stress commonly experienced by young people in high-pressure daily environments, a music-based stress-relief interactive system was developed by integrating music-assisted care with emotion-sensing technology. The design principles of the system were established through a literature review on stress, music listening, emotion detection, and interactive devices. A prototype was created accordingly and refined through interviews with four experts and eleven users participating in a preliminary experiment. The system is grounded in a four-stage guided imagery and music framework, along with a static activity model focused on relaxation-based stress management. Emotion detection was achieved using a wearable EEG device (NeuroSky’s MindWave Mobile device) and a two-dimensional emotion model, and the emotional states were translated into visual representations using seasonal and weather metaphors. A formal experiment involving 52 users was conducted. The system was evaluated, and its effectiveness confirmed, through user interviews and questionnaire surveys, with statistical analysis conducted using SPSS 26 and AMOS 23. The findings reveal that: (1) integrating emotion sensing with music listening creates a novel and engaging interactive experience; (2) emotional states can be effectively visualized using nature-inspired metaphors, enhancing user immersion and understanding; and (3) the combination of music listening, guided imagery, and real-time emotional feedback successfully promotes emotional relaxation and increases self-awareness. Background/Objective: The most effective strategy for addressing users’ prosthetic needs is a comprehensive clinical assessment that provides a holistic understanding of the individual’s symptoms, health, function, and environmental barriers and facilitators. A standardized evaluation form would provide guidance for a structured approach to comprehensive clinical assessments of people with LLA. The objective of this study was to determine a list of relevant elements to be included in prosthetic evaluation for adults with lower limb amputation. Methods: Three independent focus group discussions were conducted with prosthetists (n = 15), prosthesis users (n = 11), and decision makers (n = 4) to identify all relevant elements that should be included in the clinical assessment of prosthetic services. The final content was then determined using the Delphi technique, with 35 panelists (18 prosthetists and decision makers, and 17 prosthesis users) voting in each round. Results: A total of 91 elements were identified through the focus group, of which 78 were included through the Delphi process. The identified elements are mostly related to the physical health of the prosthesis user (e.g., mobility, pain, and medical information), while others address personal or psychosocial aspects (e.g., activities of daily living, goals, and motivation) or technical aspects (prosthesis-related). Conclusions: Through a Delphi consensus, a list of relevant elements to be included in a prosthetic evaluation was generated. These results will inform the development of a standardized clinical prosthetic assessment form. This form has the potential to improve the quality of clinical evaluations, guide interventions, and enhance the well-being of prosthetic users. Full article

Background/Objectives: This study aimed to compare the effects of low- and medium-frequency NMES, combined with a standard physical therapy (SPT) program, on functional capacity in critically ill patients. Methods: Fifty-four critically ill patients admitted into Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and on mechanical ventilation participated in this randomized, single-blinded, experimental study. Participants were randomly assigned to a Control group, who received a lower limb SPT program; the Low-frequency NMES group received lower limb SPT + NMES at 100 Hz; and the Medium-frequency NMES group received lower limb SPT + NMES at 100 Hz with a carrier frequency of 2500 Hz. The outcomes, encompassing functional capacity in the hospital, included muscle strength, handgrip strength, functional status, degree of independence for activities of daily living, functional and dynamic mobility, quality of life, and total days hospitalized. Results: Both NMES protocols combined with SPT improved functional capacity compared to the control group. Medium-frequency NMES provided additional benefits on dynamic balance, in the degree of independence to perform activities of daily living and quality of life (all p < 0.001) prior to hospital discharge. It also promoted larger gains on functional status prior to ICU discharge and on knee extension strength (both p < 0.05) prior to intermediate care unit discharge. Medium-frequency NMES also enhanced handgrip strength earlier than low-frequency NMES when compared to the control group. Notably, medium-frequency NMES was the only intervention associated with a significant reduction in total hospital stay duration (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Medium-frequency NMES, along with an SPT program in critically ill patients, showed greater benefits on functional capacity during recovery than low-frequency NMES. (Trial registration: This trial is registered on ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT05287919). Implications for rehabilitation: 1. Medium-frequency NMES may enhance physical functionality and quality of life in critically ill patients with ICU-acquired weakness. 2. Medium-frequency NMES can reduce the number of hospitalization days. 3. NMES combined with SPT represents a feasible and effective option for patients unable to engage in active rehabilitation during critical illness. Full article

Petrochemical complexes are spatially expansive and host diverse emission sources, making accurate monitoring of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) challenging using conventional two-dimensional methods. This study introduces Mobile-extraction Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (Me-DOAS), a real-time, three-dimensional remote sensing technique for assessing benzene emissions in the Ulsan petrochemical complex, South Korea. A vehicle-mounted Me-DOAS system conducted monthly measurements throughout 2024, capturing data during four daily intervals to evaluate diurnal variation. Routes included perimeter loops and grid-based transects within core industrial zones. The highest benzene concentrations were observed in February (mean: 64.28 ± 194.69 µg/m3; geometric mean: 5.13 µg/m3), with exceedances of the national annual standard (5 µg/m3) in several months. Notably, nighttime and early morning sessions showed elevated levels, suggesting contributions from nocturnal operations and meteorological conditions such as atmospheric inversion. A total of 179 exceedances (≥30 µg/m3) were identified, predominantly in zones with benzene-handling activities. Correlation analysis revealed a significant relationship between high concentrations and specific emission sources. These results demonstrate the utility of Me-DOAS in capturing spatiotemporal emission dynamics and support its application in exposure risk assessment and industrial emission control. The findings provide a robust framework for targeted management strategies and call for integration with source apportionment and dispersion modeling tools. Full article

Background/Objectives: Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a major global health concern with high mortality despite advances in resuscitation techniques. Achieving return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) represents merely the initial step in the extensive rehabilitation journey. This review highlights the critical role of structured, multidisciplinary rehabilitation following ROSC, emphasizing the necessity of integrated physiotherapy, neurocognitive therapy, and psychosocial support to enhance quality of life and societal reintegration in survivors. Methods: This narrative review analyzed peer-reviewed literature from 2020–2025, sourced from databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Emphasis was on clinical trials, expert guidelines (e.g., European Resuscitation Council 2021, American Heart Association 2020), and high-impact journals, with systematic thematic analysis across rehabilitation phases. Results: The review confirms rehabilitation as essential in addressing Intensive Care Unit–acquired weakness, cognitive impairment, and post-intensive care syndrome. Early rehabilitation (0–7 days post-ROSC), focusing on parameter-guided mobilization and cognitive stimulation, significantly improves functional outcomes. Structured interdisciplinary interventions encompassing cardiopulmonary, neuromuscular, and cognitive domains effectively mitigate long-term disability, facilitating return to daily activities and employment. However, access disparities and insufficient randomized controlled trials limit evidence-based standardization. Discussion: Optimal recovery after SCA necessitates early and continuous interdisciplinary engagement, tailored to individual physiological and cognitive profiles. Persistent cognitive fatigue, executive dysfunction, and emotional instability remain significant barriers, underscoring the need for holistic and sustained rehabilitative approaches. Conclusions: Comprehensive, individualized rehabilitation following cardiac arrest is not supplementary but fundamental to meaningful recovery. Emphasizing early mobilization, neurocognitive therapy, family involvement, and structured social reintegration pathways is crucial. Addressing healthcare disparities and investing in rigorous randomized trials are imperative to achieving standardized, equitable, and outcome-oriented rehabilitation services globally. Full article

The incorporation of digital health into the medical curricula is becoming more important to better prepare doctors in the future. Digital health comprises a wide range of tools such as electronic health records, health information technology, telemedicine, telehealth, mobile health applications, wearable devices, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality. The present study aimed to explore the medical and biomedical students’ perspectives on the integration of digital health in medical curricula. A cross-sectional study was conducted on the medical and biomedical undergraduate students at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at Sultan Qaboos University. Data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire. The response rate was 37%. The majority of respondents were in the MD (Doctor of Medicine) program (84.4%), while 29 students (15.6%) were from the BMS (Biomedical Sciences) program. A total of 55.38% agreed that they were familiar with the term ‘e-Health’. Additionally, 143 individuals (76.88%) reported being aware of the definition of e-Health. Specifically, 69 individuals (37.10%) utilize e-Health technologies every other week, 20 individuals (10.75%) reported using them daily, while 44 individuals (23.66%) indicated that they never used such technologies. Despite having several benefits, challenges exist in integrating digital health into the medical curriculum. There is a need to overcome the lack of infrastructure, existing educational materials, and digital health topics. In conclusion, embedding digital health into medical curricula is certainly beneficial for creating a digitally competent healthcare workforce that could help in better data storage, help in diagnosis, aid in patient consultation from a distance, and advise on medications, thereby leading to improved patient care which is a key public health priority. Freezing of gait (FoG) impairs mobility and daily functioning and increases the risk of falls, leading to a reduced quality of life (QoL) in people with Parkinson’s disease (PD). The Cue2walk, a wearable smart cueing device, can detect FoG and hereupon provides rhythmic cues to help people with PD manage FoG in daily life. This study investigated the user experiences and device usage of the Cue2walk, and its impact on health-related QoL, FoG and daily activities. Twenty-five users of the Cue2walk were invited to fill out an online survey, which included a modified version of the EQ-5D-5L, tailored to the use of the Cue2walk, and its scale for health-related QoL, three FoG-related questions, and a question about customer satisfaction. Sixteen users of the Cue2walk completed the survey. Average device usage per day was 9 h (SD 4). Health-related QoL significantly increased from 5.2/10 (SD 1.3) to 6.2/10 (SD 1.3) (p = 0.005), with a large effect size (Cohen’s d = 0.83). A total of 13/16 respondents reported a positive effect on FoG duration, 12/16 on falls, and 10/16 on daily activities and self-confidence. Customer satisfaction was 7.8/10 (SD 1.7). This pilot study showed that Cue2walk usage per day is high and that 15/16 respondents experienced a variety of positive effects since using the device. To validate these findings, future studies should include a larger sample size and a more extensive set of questionnaires and physical measurements monitored over time. Full article

Background: This study examined risk factors for syndrome novel coronavirus 2 virus (SARS-CoV-2) infection and self-reported adherence to infection prevention and control (IPC) measures among healthcare workers (HCWs) at a hospital in Thailand near the Myanmar border. Methods: From March to July 2022, HCWs aged ≥ 18 with COVID-19 exposure at Mae Sot General Hospital completed a questionnaire on IPC adherence, training, and COVID-19 knowledge. Nasopharyngeal samples were collected bi-weekly for SARS-CoV-2 testing. A mobile application was used for real-time monitoring of daily symptoms and exposure risks. Chi-square, Fisher’s exact tests, and log-binomial regression were performed to investigate association. Results: Out of 289 (96.3%) participants, 27 (9.9%) tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, with cough reported by 85.2% of cases. Nurse assistants (NAs) had a higher risk of infection (adjusted relative risk [aRR] 3.87; 95% CI: 0.96–15.6). Working in inpatient departments (aRR 2.37; 95% CI: 1.09–5.15) and COVID-19 wards (aRR 5.97; 95% CI: 1.32–26.9) was also associated with increased risk. While 81.7% reported consistent hand hygiene, 37% indicated inadequate IPC knowledge. Conclusions: HCWs, especially NAs and those in high-risk departments, should receive enhanced IPC training. Real-time digital monitoring tools can enhance data collection and HCW safety and are likely to be useful tools for supporting surveillance and data collection efforts. Full article

Virtual fencing (VF) offers a promising alternative to conventional or electrified fences for managing livestock grazing distribution. This study evaluated the behavioral responses of 25 Rarámuri Criollo cows fitted with Nofence® collars in Pine Valley, CA, USA. The VF system was deployed in chaparral rangeland pastures. The study included a 14-day training phase followed by an 18-day testing phase. The collar-recorded variables, including audio warnings and electric pulses, animal movement, and daily typical behavior patterns of cows classified into a High or Low virtual fence response group, were compared using repeated-measure analyses with mixed models. During training, High-response cows (i.e., resistant responders) received more audio warnings and electric pulses, while Low-response cows (i.e., active responders) had fewer audio warnings and electric pulses, explored smaller areas, and exhibited lower mobility. Despite these differences, both groups showed a time-dependent decrease in the pulse-to-warning ratio, indicating increased reliance on audio cues and reduced need for electrical stimulation to achieve similar containment rates. In the testing phase, both groups maintained high containment with minimal reinforcement. The study found that Rarámuri Criollo cows can effectively adapt to virtual fencing technology, achieving over 99% containment rate while displaying typical diurnal patterns for grazing, resting, or traveling behavior. These findings support the technical feasibility of using virtual fencing in chaparral rangelands and underscore the importance of accounting for individual behavioral variability in behavior-based containment systems. A novel framework is proposed to support the prediction of the plastic waste (PW) collection demand, route optimization, and overall management of PW from individual facilities. Based on electronic manifests from a local recycling company in Fukuoka, Japan, we developed a two-step artificial intelligence (AI)-based approach for predicting the demand for industrial PW (IPW) collection from a hospital. The daily hospital visitor numbers were introduced as a new independent variable in the IPW collection demand prediction. The stability (robustness) of each model was measured by its variance through experiments for two variable groups in four validation months. We found that introducing the visitor variables into IPW collection demand predictions was effective. A high monthly mean accuracy (85.06%) was achieved in predicting the daily IPW collection demand, which exceeded the accuracy of predictions using models without visitor records (84.44%). The stability of the Fine tree model with the highest prediction accuracy for March 2020 was 0.0466 0.0174. Based on the findings of this study, we propose several strategies for waste management: enhancing prediction models, controlling visitor flows, and analyzing working patterns. This study successfully links AI techniques with a human mobility monitoring system (location data) for waste management using MATLAB. Full article

Background: Standing has medical and psychosocial benefits for people with lower limb impairments; however, systemic, logistical, and economic barriers often limit opportunities to stand in daily life. This study explored how users perceive standing and standing-assistive technologies. Methods: This study used a mixed-methods approach: in-person interviews (n = 18) and a nationwide web-based survey (n = 125; 74.4% male, mean age 52.2 ± 13.9 years, diagnoses: spinal cord injury 37.6%, cerebrovascular disease 27.2%, and cerebral palsy 16.8%). Results: Participants described the psychosocial values of standing, such as feeling more confident and being able to interact with others at eye level. The web survey revealed that most participants believed that standing was beneficial for health (76.8%) and task efficiency (76.0%), although only 49.6% showed an interest in standing wheelchairs. The multivariate analysis revealed that ongoing standing training was the strongest predictor of positive perceptions of health benefits, task efficiency, and interest in standing wheelchairs. Younger participants showed a greater interest in standing wheelchairs. The reported barriers include a lack of awareness, high costs, and difficulty in accessing training. Conclusions: These findings suggest the need for a user-centered design and improved support systems to integrate standing into the daily lives of people with mobility impairments. Full article

Pain is a common condition among older adults and a key factor influencing daily functioning. This cross-sectional study examined how pain presence and distribution (no pain, localized pain [LP], and widespread pain [WP]) are related to limitations in Basic and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (BADLs and IADLs). Data were drawn from the Survey of Health, Aging, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) Wave 9, including 68,839 participants aged 50 or older. A clear gradient of functional limitation was observed: Individuals with WP reported the highest number of limitations, followed by those with LP, while those with no pain showed minimal impairment. These associations remained significant after adjusting for age, sex, cognitive status, physical health, and psychosocial factors, with adjusted prevalence ratios (aPRs) for WP of 1.77 for BADLs and 1.22 for IADLs (p < 0.001). Notably, depression, perceived loneliness, long-term illness, physical inactivity, and mobility limitations were especially relevant among participants with WP. The findings suggest the clinical value of assessing and implementing interventions not only in the presence but also in the extent of pain to better identify individuals at greater risk of losing independence in daily life. (1) Background: A severe decline in knee joint function significantly affects the mobility of the elderly, making it a key concern in the field of geriatric health. To alleviate the pressure on the knee joints of the elderly during daily movements such as sitting and standing, effective biomechanical solutions are required. (2) Methods: In this study, a biomechanical framework was established based on mechanical analysis to derive the transfer relationship between the ground reaction force and the knee joint moment. Experiments were designed to collect knee joint data on the elderly during the sit-to-stand process. Meanwhile, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images were processed through a medical imaging control system to construct a detailed digital 3D knee joint model. A finite element analysis was used to verify the model to ensure the accuracy of its structure and mechanical properties. An improved radial basis function was used to fit the pressure during the entire sit-to-stand conversion process to reduce the computational workload, with an error of less than 5%. In addition, a small-target human key point recognition network was developed to analyze the image sequences captured by the camera. The knee joint angle and the knee joint pressure distribution during the sit-to-stand conversion process were mapped to a three-dimensional interactive platform to form a digital twin system. (3) Results: The system can effectively capture the biomechanical behavior of the knee joint during movement and shows high accuracy in joint angle tracking and structure simulation. (4) Conclusions: This study provides an accurate and comprehensive method for analyzing the biomechanical characteristics of the knee joint during the movement of the elderly, laying a solid foundation for clinical rehabilitation research and the design of assistive devices in the field of rehabilitation medicine. Background: The global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly influenced elderly functionality, particularly in terms of balance, gait, and independence in daily activities. This study sought to evaluate how these aspects have changed over the course of the health crisis. Methods: We employed the Tinetti scale for assessing balance and gait, and the Barthel Index for measuring functional independence, conducting a comparative analysis of scores before and after the onset of the pandemic in a sample of elderly individuals. Results: Our findings indicated an increase in Tinetti scores, suggesting some improvement in balance and mobility, albeit with marked variability across participants. On the other hand, Barthel scores showed a significant decline, pointing to a reduction in functional independence. Conclusions: These results suggest that the impact of COVID-19 on elderly functionality is not uniform, highlighting the need for personalized rehabilitation strategies. Such strategies should not only focus on physical recovery but also consider the psychological and social repercussions of the pandemic to fully address the diverse needs of this vulnerable population. This proceedings summarize the presentations of the 14th Alcohol Hangover Research Group (AHRG) meeting, 11–13 April 2024 in Glasgow, UK. At this annual meeting, researchers and industry representatives discussed the current state of knowledge on the causes, consequences, and treatment of alcohol hangovers, networked, and established collaborations to conduct joint future research projects. At the 14th AHRG meeting, factors impacting the presence and severity of hangovers were discussed, such as having underlying diseases, daily diet, baseline mood and personality, new information on the pathology of the alcohol hangover, a mobile phone app to monitor alcohol consumption and hangovers, and various novel treatments.
