Multichannel vortex beams serve as an essential physical source for enabling multi-spot laser processing and high-dimensional spatial multiplexing communications. We demonstrate a compact, flexibly tunable multichannel vortex beam generator using spatially structured bidirectional two-color pump vortex four-wave mixing in a single 133Cs vapor cell. To enhance spatial multiplexing, both sides of the cell are utilized. By engineering the propagation directions and frequencies of five input beams, we establish a nonlinear interaction region that supports 16 concurrent phase-matching conditions, thereby enabling the parallel generation of up to eight vortex channels. The orbital angular momentum of the output beams follows deterministic algebraic rules, allowing for programmable control via tailored input orbital angular momentum combinations. Moreover, the channel count can be linearly tuned by selectively deactivating pumps—each switched-off pump reduces the number of output channels by two. This flexible control over orbital angular momentum states, together with channel count and spatial arrangement, establishes a highly integrated platform for on-demand vortex generation. This work highlights the potential of spatially bidirectional structured pumping in atomic vapor to expand optical dimensionality and enhance multiplexing capacity, paving the way toward multidimensional communications, quantum networks, and integrated photonics. The total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of food products is a key parameter for assessing food quality and safety. In this work, iron-doped carbon dots (Fe-CDs) were successfully prepared using waste coffee grounds as a precursor with a satisfactory fluorescence quantum yield of 9.6%. The Fe-CDs exhibited exceptional peroxidase-like activity, which can oxidize colorless 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to form blue oxTMB. Concurrently, oxTMB induced an inner filter effect, quenching the fluorescence of Fe-CDs. After being added to antioxidants such as glutathione, ascorbic acid, and L-cysteine, the generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) are consumed, thereby preventing the oxidation of TMB. The color of the mixed solution changed from dark to light blue, accompanied by the fluorescence recovery of Fe-CDs. Nevertheless, these three antioxidants possessed remarkable differences in ROS elimination capability, which resulted in different signal responses in absorption and fluorescence, and were successfully used for constructing the colorimetric/fluorescent dual-channel sensor array. Furthermore, the sensor array signals were processed using principal component analysis to achieve simultaneous detection of glutathione, ascorbic acid, and L-cysteine, and were able to effectively discriminate between mixtures and individual antioxidants. The constructed sensor array was successfully applied for the TAC detection in various foods (including vegetables, fruit, and beverages) and for the precise differentiation of antioxidants in milk samples. Overall, the prepared sensor array exhibited outstanding potential in detecting food quality. Full article

This multidisciplinary comparative study investigates consumption patterns, health-related properties, and quality attributes of trademarked and local extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) samples. It highlights the importance of localization in promoting agricultural sustainability, strengthening regional economies, and enhancing socio-economic impacts within EVOO production and consumption systems. In terms of quality characteristics, significant differences were observed in color parameters (L*, a*, b*, Chroma, Hue angle) among EVOO samples (p < 0.05). Regarding nutritional and functional properties, total phenolic content (TPC) measured with the Folin–Ciocalteu method ranged from 58.15 to 176.29 mg of gallic acid equivalents/kg of oil, while total antioxidant capacity (TAC) measured by CUPRAC and DPPH assays varied between 3.42 and 6.54 and 8.56–10.71 µmol of Trolox equivalents/g of oil, respectively. TPC and TAC were also evaluated for their stability during in vitro gastro-intestinal digestion, demonstrating that EVOO’s bioactive potential remains stable under gastric and intestinal conditions. Local samples exhibited significantly higher TACs than trademarked products across undigested, gastric, and intestinal phases (p < 0.05). Concurrently, a face-to-face consumer survey assessed purchasing behaviors and preferences, revealing that 71.3% of consumers preferred local EVOO and showed a low tendency to purchase commercial brands (p < 0.05). Cooperatives were identified as the main distribution channel, playing a crucial role in sustaining local production systems. This study offers valuable insights into EVOO’s bioactive content and consumer behavior, providing a foundation for developing both localized and commercial products that support health outcomes. Additionally, the findings contribute to policy development concerning sustainable food systems and geographical indications. Full article

Thangka images contain complex and interconnected elements that often share similar hues. Traditional segmentation algorithms struggle to capture fine details, which renders them poorly adaptable to this characteristic of Thangka images. Additionally, the highly saturated and high-contrast color features in Thangka images can induce issues such as “over-segmentation” or “edge misclassification” during the segmentation process. This paper proposes a semantic segmentation approach that integrates HRNet with a multi-scale convolutional attention mechanism to improve the accuracy of detail segmentation in Thangka imagery. A Coordinate Attention mechanism is integrated into the bottleneck section of HRNet to enhance the model’s perception of spatial and channel information. After feature extraction, a SENet module is appended to improve the model’s ability to adaptively adjust channel weights, whereas the HRNet framework is streamlined to optimize overall network efficiency. Moreover, an atrous convolutional attention mechanism module is used to capture and fuse multi-scale features from the processed feature maps, achieving more precise semantic segmentation. Compared with the original model, the modified model achieves a 32% reduction in parameter volume. Concurrently, the mIoU improves from 80.33% to 84.83% on the Thangka dataset and from 77.04% to 78.58% on the Cityscapes dataset. Full article

This paper presents an enhanced method for the transmission of 3D video in the Multi-view Video plus Depth (MVD) format over Two-Way Relay Channels (TWRC). Our approach addresses the unique challenges of MVD-based 3D video by combining Hierarchical Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (HQAM), a method that prioritizes data layers based on importance, and Inter-Layer Forward Error Correction (IL-FEC), which protects critical data from errors. These are specifically designed to handle the dual-layer data structure where color data and depth information require different levels of error protection, and it reduces transmission errors and enhances the quality of MVD-based 3D video over TWRC. In the TWRC scenario, the proposed scheme optimizes transmission by reducing the number of relayed bitstreams by half while maintaining high-quality requirements, as demonstrated by significant improvements in the Structural Similarity Index (SSIM) for virtually synthesized views. Furthermore, we identify and optimize the hierarchical modulation parameter (α), which controls the priority and protection levels of different data streams. Systematically varying α reveals its substantial impact on the quality of the reconstructed 3D video, as measured by SSIM. Our results demonstrate that the proposed combination of HQAM and IL-FEC not only maintains the target SSIM of 0.9 for the virtually synthesized view under various relay conditions but also reveals the optimal α value for balancing the error protection between the color and depth map data streams. Notably, while increasing α enhances the protection of critical data (such as color video streams), it may concurrently degrade the quality of less important streams (like depth maps), highlighting the importance of fine-tuning α to achieve the best overall video quality. These findings suggest that our method provides a flexible and effective solution for high-quality 3D video transmission in challenging communication environments, potentially advancing the development of future 3D video delivery systems. In the digital heritage field, the accurate reproduction of hard-to-photograph items, such as daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, and tintypes, is an ongoing challenge. Industrial contactless sensors offer the potential to improve the quality of scanned images, but their capabilities and limitations have not been fully explored. In our research, a dataset of 48 scans was created using the hi-tech industrial contactless sensor CRUSE. Moreover, 3 rare original photographs were scanned in 16 different modes, the most suitable images were determined by specialists in the restoration, and validated through experiments involving eye-tracking, multiple computer vision, and image processing methods. Our study identified the Cruse scanning modes, which can be utilized to achieve the most accurate digital representation of scanned originals. Secondly, we proposed several methods for highlighting the degradation and minor scratches on photographs that otherwise might not be detected by the restorer’s naked eye. Our findings belong to four overlapping areas, i.e., image understanding, digital heritage, information visualization, and industrial sensors research. We publish the entire dataset under the CC BY-NC 4.0 license. The CRUSE sensor shows promise as a tool for improving the quality of scanned images of difficult-to-photograph items. Further research is necessary to fully understand its capabilities and limitations in this context. Full article

A refined intersensor comparison study is carried out to evaluate the radiometric stability of the 2257 nm channel (M11) of the first Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) aboard the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (SNPP) satellite. This study is initiated as part of the examination into the performance of key shortwave infrared (SWIR) bands for SNPP VIIRS ocean color data processing and applications, with Band M11 playing key role over turbid and inland waters. The evaluation utilizes simultaneous nadir overpasses (SNOs) to compare SNPP VIIRS Band M11 against Band 7 of the MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) in the Aqua satellite over concurrently observed scenes. The standard result of the radiance comparison is a seemingly uncontrolled and inconsistent time series unsuitable for further analyses, in great contrast to other matching band-pairs whose radiometric comparisons are typically stable around 1.0 within 1% variation. The mismatching relative spectral response (RSR) between the two respective bands, with SNPP VIIRS M11 at 2225 to 2275 nm and Aqua MODIS B7 at 2125 to 2175 nm, is demonstrated to be the cause of the large variation because of the different dependence of the spectral responses of the two bands over identical scenes. A consistent radiometric comparison time series, however, can be extracted from SNO events that occur over snowy surfaces. A customized selection and analysis procedure successfully identifies the snowy scenes within the SNO events and builds a stable comparison time series. Particularly instrumental for the success of the comparison is the use of the half-kilometer spatial resolution data of Aqua MODIS B7 that significantly enhances the statistics. The final refined time series of Aqua MODIS B7 radiance over the SNPP VIIRS M11 radiance is stable at around 0.39 within 2.5% showing no evidence of drift. The radiometric ratio near 0.39 suggests the strong presence of medium-grained snow of a mixed-snow condition in those SNO scenes leading to successful comparison. The multi-year stability indicates the correctness of the on-orbit RSB calibration of SNPP VIIRS M11 whose result does not suffer from long-term drift. Full article

Coded Structured Light techniques represent one of the most attractive research areas within the field of optical metrology. The coding procedures are typically based on projecting either a single pattern or a temporal sequence of patterns to provide 3D surface data. In this context, multi-slit or stripe colored patterns may be used with the aim of reducing the number of projected images. However, color imaging sensors require the use of calibration procedures to address crosstalk effects between different channels and to reduce the chromatic aberrations. In this paper, a Coded Structured Light system has been developed by integrating a color stripe projector and a monochrome camera. A discrete coding method, which combines spatial and temporal information, is generated by sequentially projecting and acquiring a small set of fringe patterns. The method allows the concurrent measurement of geometrical and chromatic data by exploiting the benefits of using a monochrome camera. The proposed methodology has been validated by measuring nominal primitive geometries and free-form shapes. The experimental results have been compared with those obtained by using a time-multiplexing gray code strategy. Full article
