The interfacial transition zone (ITZ) significantly influences the mechanical properties and durability of lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC), yet existing research on the ITZ in LWAC remains fragmented due to varied characterization techniques, inconsistent definitions of ITZ thickness and porosity, and the absence of standardized performance metrics. This review focuses primarily on structural LWAC produced with artificial and natural lightweight aggregates, with intended applications in high-performance civil engineering structures. This review systematically analyzes the microstructure, composition, and physical properties of the ITZ, including porosity, microhardness, and hydration product distribution. Quantitative data from recent studies are highlighted—for instance, incorporating 3% nano-silica increased ITZ bond strength by 134.12% at 3 days and 108.54% at 28 days, while using 10% metakaolin enhanced 28-day compressive strength by 24.6% and reduced chloride diffusion by 81.9%. The review categorizes current ITZ enhancement strategies such as mineral admixtures, nanomaterials, surface coatings, and aggregate pretreatment methods, evaluating their mechanisms, effectiveness, and limitations. By identifying key trends and research gaps—particularly the lack of predictive models and standardized characterization methods—this review aims to synthesize key findings and identify knowledge gaps to support future material design in LWAC. Concrete is an essential material in the construction industry due to its strength and versatility. However, its quality can be compromised by environmental factors during its fresh and early-age states. To address this vulnerability, various sensors have been implemented to monitor critical parameters. While high-precision sensors (e.g., piezoelectric and fiber optic) offer accurate measurements, their cost and fragility limit their widespread use in construction environments. In response, this study proposes a cost-effective, Arduino-based wireless monitoring system to track temperature and humidity in fresh and early-age concrete elements. The system was validated through laboratory tests on cylindrical specimens and industrial applications on self-compacting concrete New Jersey barriers. The sensors recorded temperature variations between 15 °C and 35 °C and relative humidity from 100% down to 45%, depending on environmental exposure. In situ monitoring confirmed the system’s ability to detect thermal gradients and evaporation dynamics during curing. Additionally, the presence of embedded sensors caused a tensile strength reduction of up to 37.5% in small specimens, highlighting the importance of sensor placement. The proposed solution demonstrates potential for improving quality control and curing management in precast concrete production with low-cost devices. Full article

This study systematically investigated the corrosion behavior of P110 pipeline steel in simulated carbonated concrete environments through a combination of electrochemical testing and multiphysics simulation, with particular focus on revealing the evolution mechanisms of corrosion product deposition and ion concentration distribution under half crevice structures, providing new insights into localized corrosion in concealed areas. Experimental results showed that no significant corrosion occurred on the P110 steel surface in uncarbonated simulated pore solution. Conversely, the half crevice structure significantly promoted the development of localized corrosion in carbonated simulated pore solution, with the most severe corrosion and substantial accumulation of corrosion products observed at the crevice mouth region. COMSOL Multiphysics simulations demonstrated that this phenomenon was primarily attributed to local enrichment of Cl and H+ ions, leading to peak corrosion current density, and directional migration of Fe2+ ions toward the crevice mouth, causing preferential deposition of corrosion products at this location. This “electrochemical acceleration-corrosion product deposition” multiphysics coupling analysis of corrosion product deposition patterns within crevices represents a new perspective not captured by traditional crevice corrosion models. The established ion migration-corrosion product deposition model provides new theoretical foundations for understanding crevice corrosion mechanisms and predicting the service life of buried concrete pipelines. Ferronickel slag and ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) are solid waste by-products from the metallurgical industry. When incorporated into concrete, they help promote resource utilization, reduce hydration heat, and lower both solid waste emissions and the carbon footprint. To facilitate the application of ferronickel slag–GGBFS concrete in 3D printing, this study examines how aggregate size and nozzle diameter affect its performance. The investigation involves in situ printing, rheological characterization, mechanical testing, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. Results indicate that excessively large average aggregate size negatively impacts the smooth extrusion of concrete strips, resulting in a cross-sectional width that exceeds the preset dimension. Excessively small average aggregate size results in insufficient yield stress, leading to a narrow cross-section of the extruded strip that fails to meet printing specifications. The extrusion performance is closely related to both the average aggregate size and nozzle diameter, which can significantly influence the normal extrusion stability and print quality of 3D printed concrete strips. The thixotropic performance improves with an increase in the aggregate size. Both compressive and flexural strengths improve with increasing aggregate size but decrease with an increase in the printing nozzle size. Anisotropy in mechanical behavior decreases progressively as both parameters mentioned increase. By examining the cracks and pores at the interlayer interface, this study elucidates the influence mechanism of aggregate size as well as printing nozzle parameters on the mechanical properties of 3D printed ferronickel slag–GGBFS concrete. This study also recommends the following ranges. When the maximum aggregate size exceeds 50% of the nozzle diameter, smooth extrusion is not achievable. If it falls between 30% and 50%, extrusion is possible but shaping remains unstable. When it is below 30%, both stable extrusion and good shaping can be achieved. Full article

The construction industry is a major consumer of raw materials and a significant contributor to environmental emissions. Life cycle assessment (LCA) using digital models is a valuable tool for conducting a science-based analysis to reduce these impacts. However, transferring data from environmental product declarations (EPDs) to BIM for the purpose of sustainability assessment requires significant resources for its interpretation and integration. This study is founded on a comprehensive review of the scientific literature and standards, an analysis of published digital EPDs, and a thorough evaluation of IFC (industry foundation classes), identifying twenty gaps for the automated incorporation of LCA data from construction products into BIM. The identified limitations were assessed using the digital model of a building pilot, applying simplifications to incorporate actual EPD data. This paper presents the identified barriers to the automated incorporation of digital EPDs into BIM, and proposes eleven concrete actions to improve IFC 4.3. While prior studies have analyzed the environmental data in IFC, this research is significant in two key areas. Firstly, it focuses on the direct machine interpretation of environmental information without human intervention. Secondly, it is intended to be directly applicable to a revision of the IFC standards. Full article

Lithium Slag as a Supplementary Cementitious Material for Sustainable Concrete: A Review

The global cement industry remains a significant contributor to carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, prompting substantial research efforts toward sustainable construction materials. Lithium slag (LS), a by-product of lithium extraction, has attracted attention as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM). This review synthesizes experimental findings on LS replacement levels, fresh-state behavior, mechanical performance (compressive, tensile, and flexural strengths), time-dependent deformation (shrinkage and creep), and durability (sulfate, acid, abrasion, and thermal) of LS-modified concretes. Statistical analysis identifies an optimal LS dosage of 20–30% (average 24%) for maximizing compressive strength and long-term durability, with 40% as a practical upper limit for tensile and flexural performance. Fresh-state tests show that workability losses at high LS content can be mitigated via superplasticizers. Drying shrinkage and creep strains decrease in a dose-dependent manner with up to 30% LS. High-volume (40%) LS blends achieve up to an 18% gain in 180-day compressive strength and >30% reduction in permeability metrics. Under elevated temperatures, 20% LS mixes retain up to 50% more residual strength than controls. In advanced systems—autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC), one-part geopolymers, and recycled aggregate composites—LS further enhances both microstructural densification and durability. In particular, LS emerges as a versatile SCM that optimizes mechanical and durability performance, supports material circularity, and reduces the carbon footprint. Full article

The construction industry has been troubled by a shortage of skilled labor and safety accidents in recent years. Therefore, more and more robots are introduced to undertake dangerous and repetitive jobs, so that human workers can concentrate on higher-value and creative problem-solving tasks. Nevertheless, although human–robot collaboration (HRC) shows great potential, most existing evaluation methods still focus on the single performance of either the human or robot, and systematic indicators for a whole HRC team remain insufficient. To fill this research gap, the present study constructs a comprehensive evaluation framework for HRC team performance in construction projects. Firstly, a detailed literature review is carried out, and three theories are integrated to build 33 indicators preliminarily. Afterwards, an expert questionnaire survey (N = 15) is adopted to revise and verify the model empirically. The survey yielded a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.916, indicating excellent internal consistency. The indicators rated highest in importance were task completion time (µ = 4.53) and dynamic separation distance (µ = 4.47) on a 5-point scale. Eight indicators were excluded due to mean importance ratings falling below the 3.0 threshold. The framework is formed with five main dimensions and 25 concrete indicators. Finally, an AHP-TOPSIS method is used to evaluate the HRC team performance. The AHP analysis reveals that Safety (weight = 0.2708) is prioritized over Productivity (weight = 0.2327) by experts, establishing a safety-first principle for successful HRC deployment. The framework is demonstrated through a case study of a human–robot plastering team, whose team performance scored as fair. This shows that the framework can help practitioners find out the advantages and disadvantages of HRC team performance and provide targeted improvement strategies. Furthermore, the framework offers construction managers a scientific basis for deciding robot deployment and team assignment, thus promoting safer, more efficient, and more creative HRC in construction projects. This paper presents a comprehensive review of dealuminated metakaolin (DK), a hazardous industrial by-product generated by the aluminium sulphate (alum) industry and evaluates its potential as a component in cementitious systems for the partial or full replacement of Portland cement (PC). Positioned within the context of waste valorisation in concrete, the review aims to establish a critical understanding of DK formation, properties, and reactivity, particularly its pozzolanic potential, to assess its suitability for use as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM), or as a precursor in alkali-activated cement (AAC) systems for concrete. A systematic methodology is used to extract and synthesise relevant data from existing literature concerning DK and its potential applications in cement and concrete. The collected information is organised into thematic sections exploring key aspects of DK, beginning with its formation from kaolinite ores, followed by studies on its pozzolanic reactivity. Applications of DK are then reviewed, focusing on its integration into SCMs and alkali-activated cement (AAC) systems. The review consolidates existing knowledge related to DK, identifying scientific gaps and practical challenges that limit its broader adoption for cement and concrete applications, and outlines future research directions to provide a solid foundation for future studies. Overall, this review highlights the potential of DK as a low-carbon, circular-economy material and promotes its integration into efforts to enhance the sustainability of construction practices. The findings aim to support researchers’ and industry stakeholders’ strategies to reduce cement clinker content and mitigate the environmental footprint of concrete in a circular-economy context. This study aims to enhance the performance of an innovative steel slag–ceramsite foam concrete (SSCFC) to advance sustainable green building materials. An eco-friendly composite construction material was developed by integrating industrial by-product steel slag (SS) with lightweight ceramsite. Employing a three-factor, three-level orthogonal experimental design at a fixed density of 800 kg/m3, 12 mix proportions (including a control group) were investigated with the variables of water-to-cement (W/C) ratio, steel slag replacement ratio, and ceramsite replacement ratio. The governing mechanisms of the W/C ratio, steel slag replacement level, and ceramsite replacement proportion on the SSCFC’s fluidity and compressive strength (CS) were elucidated. The synergistic application of range analysis and analysis of variance (ANOVA) quantified the significance of factors on target properties, and partial least squares regression (PLSR)-based prediction models were established. The test results indicated the following significance hierarchy: steel slag replacement > W/C ratio > ceramsite replacement for fluidity. In contrast, W/C ratio > ceramsite replacement > steel slag replacement governed the compressive strength. Verification showed R2 values exceeding 65% for both fluidity and CS predictions versus experimental data, confirming model reliability. Multi-criteria optimization yielded optimal compressive performance and suitable fluidity at a W/C ratio of 0.4, 10% steel slag replacement, and 25% ceramsite replacement. Full article

The aim of this paper is to present the results of an experimental and numerical investigation into the degradation of reinforced concrete (RC) specimens subjected to an accelerated corrosion process using impressed current in the presence of chloride ions. The corrosion of the rebars was carried out using three current densities (50, 100, and 200 µA/cm2) and various exposure times. The experimental results characterised the internal degradation of the RC specimens through measurement of the corrosion product thicknesses at the steel–concrete interface; the widths, lengths and orientations of internal concrete cracks; and the external concrete crack widths. In addition, numerical modelling of the corroded RC specimens was conducted to describe the crack patterns. The comparison between the experimental and numerical results demonstrated a high degree of correlation, providing insights into the degradation process of RC specimens due to corrosion. Full article

Achieving sustainable development goals remains a core issue in global development. In response, China has proposed the development of new quality productive forces (NQPFs) through innovative thinking, emphasizing that fostering NQPFs is both an intrinsic requirement and a pivotal focus for advancing high-quality development. Concurrently, the intelligent transformation of the manufacturing sector serves as a critical direction for China’s economic restructuring and upgrading. This paper places “new quality productive forces” and “intelligent transformation of manufacturing” within the same analytical framework. Starting from the logical chain of “new quality productive forces—three major mechanisms—intelligent transformation of manufacturing,” it concretizes the value implications of new quality productive forces into a systematic conceptual framework driven by the synergistic interaction of three major mechanisms: the mechanism of revolutionary technological breakthroughs, the mechanism of innovative allocation of production factors, and the mechanism of deep industrial transformation and upgrading. This study constructs a “3322” evaluation index system for NQPFs, based on three formative processes, three driving forces, two supporting systems, and two-dimensional characteristics. Simultaneously, it builds an evaluation index system for the intelligent transformation of manufacturing, encompassing intelligent technology, intelligent applications, and intelligent benefits. Using national time-series data from 2012 to 2023, this study assesses the development levels of both NQPFs and the intelligent transformation of manufacturing during this period. The study further analyzes the impact of NQPFs on the intelligent transformation of the manufacturing sector. The research results indicate the following: (1) NQPFs drive the intelligent transformation of the manufacturing industry through the three mechanisms of innovative allocation of production factors, revolutionary breakthroughs in technology, and deep transformation and upgrading of industries. (2) The development of NQPFs exhibits a slow upward trend; however, the outbreak of the pandemic and Sino-US trade frictions have caused significant disruptions to the development of new-type productive forces. (3) The level of intelligent manufacturing continues to improve; however, from 2020 to 2023, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and Sino-US trade conflicts, the level of intelligent benefits has slightly declined. (4) NQPFs exert a powerful driving force on the intelligent transformation of manufacturing, exerting a significant positive impact on intelligent technology, intelligent applications, and intelligent efficiency levels. The utilization of recycled concrete aggregate presents an effective solution for construction waste mitigation. However, concrete service in sulfate environments leads to sulfate ion retention in recycled aggregates, substantially impairing their quality and requiring modification approaches. A critical question remains whether traditional recycled aggregate modification techniques can effectively enhance the performance of these sulfate-containing recycled aggregates (SRA). Cement paste wrapping in various proportions was used in this investigation to enhance SRA. The performance of both SRA and modified aggregates was systematically assessed through measurements of apparent density, water absorption, crushing value, and microhardness. Microstructural analysis of the cement wrapping modification mechanism was conducted by scanning electron microscopy coupled with mercury intrusion porosimetry. Results revealed that internal sulfate addition decreased the crushing value and increased the water absorption of recycled aggregates, primarily due to micro-cracks formed by expansion. Additionally, the pores were occupied by erosion products, leading to a slight increase in the apparent density of aggregates. The performance of SRA was effectively enhanced by cement paste wrapping at a 0.6 water–binder ratio, whereas it was negatively impacted by a ratio of 1.0. The modifying effect became even more effective when 15% fly ash was added to the wrapping paste. Scanning electron microscopy observations revealed that the interface of SRA was predominantly composed of gypsum crystals. Cement paste wrapping greatly enhanced the original interface structure, despite a new dense interface formed in the modified aggregates. Full article

The aviation industry is under increasing pressure to reduce its environmental impact while maintaining safety and performance standards. One promising area for improvement lies in the use of sustainable materials in airport infrastructure. One of the issues preventing uptake of emerging sustainable technologies is the lack of guidance relating to the opportunities, potential benefits, associated risks and an implementation plan specific to airport pavements. This research reviewed opportunities to incorporate waste materials into rigid airport pavements, focusing on concrete base slabs. Commonly used supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), such as fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) were considered, as well as recycled aggregates, including recycled concrete aggregate (RCA), recycled crushed glass (RCG), and blast furnace slag (BFS). Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) were also used to quantify the potential for environmental benefit associated with various concrete mixtures, with findings showing 23% to 50% reductions in embodied carbon are possible for selected theoretical concrete mixtures that incorporate waste materials. With considered evaluation and structured implementation, the integration of waste materials into rigid airport pavements offers a practical and effective route to improve environmental outcomes in aviation infrastructure. It was concluded that a Triple Bottom Line (TBL) framework—assessing financial, environmental, and social factors—guides material selection and can support sustainable decision-making, as does performance-based specifications that enable sustainable technologies to be incorporated into airport pavement. The study also proposed a consequence-based implementation hierarchy to facilitate responsible adoption of waste materials in airside pavements. The outcomes of this review will assist airport managers and pavement designers to implement practical changes to achieve more sustainable rigid airport pavements in the future. Full article

This study investigates the impact of partially replacing cement with fly ash (FA) on the mechanical performance of fiber-reinforced rubberized concrete (FRRC) incorporating waste tyre rubber and recycled macro-synthetic fibers (MSF). FRRC mixtures were prepared with varying fly ash replacement levels (0%, 25%, and 50%), rubber aggregate contents (0%, 10%, and 20% by volume of fine aggregate), and macro-synthetic fiber dosages (0% to 1% by total volume). The fresh properties were evaluated through slump tests, while hardened properties including compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and flexural strength were systematically assessed. Results demonstrated that fly ash substitution up to 25% improved the interfacial bonding between rubber particles, fibers, and the cementitious matrix, leading to enhanced tensile and flexural performance without significantly compromising compressive strength. However, at 50% replacement, strength reductions were more pronounced due to slower pozzolanic reactions and reduced cement content. The inclusion of MSF effectively mitigated strength loss induced by rubber aggregates, improving post-cracking behavior and toughness. Overall, an optimal balance was achieved at 25% fly ash replacement combined with 10% rubber and 0.5% fiber content, producing a more sustainable composite with favorable mechanical properties while reducing carbon and ecological footprints. These findings highlight the potential of integrating industrial by-products and waste materials to develop eco-friendly, high-performance FRRC for structural applications, supporting circular economy principles and reducing the carbon footprint of concrete infrastructure. Polypropylene (EPP) concrete offers advantages such as low density and good thermal insulation properties, but its relatively low strength limits its engineering applications. Waste steel fibers (WSFs) obtained during the sorting and processing of machining residues can be incorporated into EPP concrete (EC) to enhance its strength and toughness. Using the volume fractions of EPP and WSF as variables, specimens of EPP concrete (EC) and waste steel fiber-reinforced EPP concrete (WSFREC) were prepared and subjected to cube compressive strength tests, splitting tensile strength tests, and four-point flexural strength tests. The results indicate that EPP particles significantly improve the toughness of concrete but inevitably lead to a considerable reduction in strength. The incorporation of WSF substantially enhanced the splitting tensile strength and flexural strength of EC, with increases of at least 37.7% and 34.5%, respectively, while the improvement in cube compressive strength was relatively lower at only 23.6%. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations of the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) and WSF surface morphology in WSFREC revealed that the addition of EPP particles introduces more defects in the concrete matrix. However, the inclusion of WSF promotes the formation of abundant hydration products on the fiber surface, mitigating matrix defects, improving the bond between WSF and the concrete matrix, effectively inhibiting crack propagation, and enhancing both the strength and toughness of the concrete.
