Dual-motor electric drive axles (e-axles) can realize basic torque vectoring through motor-torque allocation. However, without an inter-wheel power-transfer path, they still face structural limitations under motor torque–speed envelopes and severe left–right adhesion asymmetry. To address this issue, this paper proposes a reconfigurable dual-motor e-axle based on fixed-carrier compound planetary gear trains and two cross-axle clutches. By switching between controlled-slip and lock-coupled states, the proposed topology creates a switchable inter-wheel power-transfer path. As a result, it enhances yaw-rate regulation capability under high-adhesion conditions and improves escape capability under severe adhesion asymmetry. A unified kinematic–static analytical framework is established to derive closed-form capability boundaries and compact structural indices for parameter matching. Vehicle-level co-simulation on a representative rear-wheel-drive platform is then carried out for validation. Under severe split-μ conditions, the peak high-adhesion wheel torque increases from 241.72 to 695.57 N·m, and the escape time decreases from 0.43 to 0.19 s. In a representative high-adhesion step-steer case, the mean yaw-rate tracking error is reduced from 6.75 to 0.20 deg/s, while the mean differential wheel torque reaches 1.83 times that of the baseline mode. The other high-adhesion cases show the same trend. These results verify the vehicle-dynamics significance and engineering feasibility of the proposed architecture. Full article

The carrier eccentricity error and gear compound faults are most likely to occur simultaneously in an actual planetary gear train (PGT). Various faults and errors are coupled with each other to generate a complex dynamic response, which makes the diagnosis of PGT faults difficult in practice. In order to analyze the joint effect of the error and the compound faults in a PGT, a carrier eccentricity error model is proposed and incorporated into the TVMS model by considering the time-varying center distance, line of action (LOA), meshing angle, and contact ratio. Then, the TVMS of the cracked gear is derived based on the potential energy method. On this basis, the dynamic model of a PGT with both the carrier eccentricity error and compound gear cracks as internal excitations are established. Furthermore, the meshing characteristics and dynamic responses of the PGT are simulated to investigate the compound fault features. A series of experiments are conducted to further analyze the influence of the compound fault on the vibration response. The relevant conclusions can provide a reference for the compound fault diagnosis of a PGT in practice. Full article

The modeling and simulation of gearboxes is important for analyzing the dynamic characteristics and designing control strategies of transmission systems. Variable-speed gearboxes include compound planetary gear trains and clutches, which complicates dynamic modeling. Here, a procedural bond graph-based modeling method that considers many uncertainties is proposed. The proposed method yields a constant system–structure model. First, bond graph models of the two most common planetary gears were summarized, and were used as sub-models of a compound planetary gear train. Then, the Karnopp friction sub-model of the friction clutch and a relative angular displacement sub-model of the one-way clutch were constructed. Based on the dynamic coupling between the sub-models, the modeling steps of the gearbox, including the compound planetary gear train friction clutch one-way clutch coupling system, are described in detail. Next, the main sources of uncertainties of gearbox were analyzed and the simulation methods were given. Finally, the novel uncertain bond graph model was used to simulate the double planetary gearbox; the transmission ratio before and after the shift was 2.42 and 1.72, compared with the design values of 2.41 and 1.71, respectively; the deviation is within 5.8%; The average rotating speeds of the output shaft fluctuated by 6 and 2.5% respectively, which was within a reasonable range, so the effectiveness of the method is verified. The increasing presence of additive manufacturing (AM) in the space sector prompted us to investigate the feasibility of a single degree of freedom (DoF) pointing system (PS) made by means of a compound planetary gear train system (C-PGTS) integrating a dynamic balancing system (DBS) and entirely realized in AM. We analyzed in detail the dynamics of the system dealing with the design and the realization of the prototype. Of fundamental importance for this paper is the careful selection of materials for AM suitable for the prohibitive conditions of space. The results, deriving from the comparison between the experimental part and the simulations, underline the correct dimensioning of the PS and the fundamental importance of DBS in maintaining the satellite attitude. The results also confirm the capabilities of AM in the production of complex mechanical systems, allowing high precision, combined with interesting mechanical properties and low weight. This suggests the potential of AM in the space domain, both for structural parts and active components, such as those listed in this work. The Power-Split Continuously Variable Transmission is one of the most promising architectures for Hybrid Electric Vehicles. These systems have been introduced to improve vehicle global efficiency since they can maximize the efficiency in varying operating conditions. During the design stage, the availability of modeling tools would play a key role in achieving optimal design and control of these architectures. In this work, a compound power split device that combines an electric Continuously Variable Transmission with two planetary gear trains is analyzed. A comprehensive model is derived that allows the different power flow configurations to be evaluated given the properties of the single subcomponents of the system. The efficiency of the powertrain can be derived as well, and a numerical example is provided. The architecture studied has an efficiency that can be higher than that obtained using one single eCVT for most of the global transmission ratio range, showing that this solution could be suitable as a part of a more complex compound transmission that engages in a specific speed range.
