Hispanic, Asian, and African Americans are disproportionately affected by liver cancer, viral hepatitis B (HBV), and viral hepatitis C (HCV), in part because of barriers to liver cancer awareness and prevention. We implemented a community-based, culturally tailored initiative to raise awareness and promote uptake of behaviors for liver cancer prevention, early diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment. Guided by community-based participatory research (CBPR) principles and built on well-established collaboration with community-based organizations, we actively engaged the community advisory board (CAB), community health workers, and community members in multiple phases of (1) a community-based educational initiative, (2) a city-wide bus campaign, and (3) community health fairs. This multilevel initiative saw notable changes in community members’ knowledge of liver cancer, viral hepatitis, lifestyle behaviors like dietary patterns, and uptake of screening tests for HBV/HCV. Additionally, the comprehensive engagement of CAB, healthcare workers, and community members significantly benefited community capacity building on cancer research and health promotion. These CBPR-guided community initiatives had remarkable positive impacts on promoting liver cancer awareness and prevention among underserved racial/ethnic minorities. The academic–community relationships built on and strengthened through shared power, mutual respect, and trust serve as the foundation for sustainable community growth and empowerment. Full article

Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology adopted by brands to innovate packaging and improve communication with consumers. Companies integrate AR features into their packaging, choosing between different approaches. However, it is still unclear how different AR typologies can influence consumers’ perceptions during the interaction. For this purpose, this exploratory study aims to analyze the differences between two types of AR—static vs. immersive—applied to packaging, evaluating their impact and effectiveness on consumers. A within-subjects design, on a sample of 20 participants, was employed using neuroscientific techniques (electroencephalography, heart rate, and skin conductance) to explore the cognitive and emotional engagement based on the AR interaction, as well as self-report measures (Augmented Reality Immersion, Perceived Informativeness and Authenticity). Neurophysiological findings indicated that the immersive AR application elicited a greater emotional and partially cognitive engagement, as well as a higher perceived immersion, according to self-reports. The study’s findings offer a deeper understanding of how consumers’ perceptions can change in response to different types of AR content. Although AR is not yet widely accessible as a marketing tool for brands, its growing technological feasibility makes it relevant to know its potential effects on consumers. Thus, this study will offer useful insights for companies to direct their investments toward AR applications in marketing campaigns. Full article

In contemporary democracies, social media platforms are widely used for political campaigning, with political figures seeking to connect with diverse segments of the public. This study aims to illuminate the implementation of online political campaigning in Greece by analysing the content shared on four social media platforms (Facebook, X, Instagram, and TikTok) by the leaders of the three principal political parties during the 2023 pre-election phase. We employ content analysis to evaluate primarily the textual and secondarily the visual elements of the posts (N = 1.222) found on the relevant accounts, using a coding framework that comprises 32 variables. The research draws on concepts pertinent to the platformised era, such as “virality,” “personalisation,” and “network media logic,” to highlight how contemporary politicians favour direct and easily comprehensible communication patterns with citizens. The results suggest that political leaders in Greece utilise social media as a means of emotionally mobilising voters. X and Facebook emerged as the primary platforms for distributing political messages, while Instagram and TikTok focused more on personalised and non-political content. The elements of personalisation were particularly prominent in the posts made by the leader of the Conservative Party (New Democracy), who demonstrated greater proficiency in utilising TikTok’s features. Background/Objectives: E-cigarette use has increased substantially among university students in recent years, coinciding with a broader shift in nicotine consumption patterns globally. Despite initial perceptions of e-cigarettes as harm-reduction tools, growing evidence indicates significant health risks, misinformation, and limited awareness—especially within higher education environments. This structured literature review aims to synthesize peer-reviewed evidence on the health impacts, behavioral determinants, and the role of nursing in addressing e-cigarette use among university students. Methods: A literature search was conducted across five databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, Embase, Dialnet) between February and March 2025. Eligible studies were published between January 2020 and January 2025 in English or Spanish. A total of 43 studies were included. Data were synthesized narratively, and methodological quality was assessed using Joanna Briggs Institute checklists and The Scale for the Assessment of Narrative Reviews Articles. Results: E-cigarette use among university students showed wide variability in prevalence, with higher rates among males, students in non-health disciplines, and users of disposable devices. Key behavioral and social determinants included peer influence, curiosity, stress management, and social media exposure. Despite documented health risks—such as nicotine dependence, respiratory and cardiovascular impairment, and mental health concerns—misconceptions about safety and cessation efficacy were common, even among health science students. Nursing-led interventions hold great potential for prevention but remain underdeveloped within university settings. Conclusions: The findings underscore the urgent need for evidence-based prevention strategies—particularly those led by nurses—to reduce e-cigarette use, bridge knowledge gaps, and mitigate associated health risks in higher education. Future efforts should prioritize institutional policy reinforcement, improved health communication, and the integration of vaping-related education into nursing curricula and public health campaigns targeting emerging adults. Rabies is a fatal but entirely vaccine-preventable disease, with the highest risk in areas where free-roaming domestic dogs are prevalent. Understanding dog owners’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) is crucial for shaping effective rabies control strategies. This scoping review aimed to synthesize global evidence from studies evaluating dog owners’ KAP to identify behavioral factors relevant to rabies prevention and control. A systematic literature search was conducted using PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus, covering the period from 2012 to 2025. Seventy full-text articles were included based on predefined criteria. The findings reveal substantial gaps in dog owners’ knowledge, beliefs, and behaviors regarding rabies prevention. While general awareness of rabies is high among dog owners, their knowledge about transmission, clinical signs, and the fatal nature of the disease is inconsistent, with significant variability across studies. The vaccination uptake also varied widely across studies, ranging from less than 1% to over 90%, with no study reporting full coverage. Furthermore, a strong positive correlation was found between vaccination practice and the awareness of vaccine benefits (r = 0.69, p = 0.004). Common barriers to vaccination include lack of information, vaccine accessibility, distance to clinics, and personal constraints. These insights underscore the importance of early and targeted communication about vaccination campaigns. Future research should focus on periodically evaluating KAP before and after interventions to better inform rabies control efforts. Full article

Background/Objectives: Vaccine hesitancy is one of the top ten threats to global health. It is necessary to develop appropriate strategies to address vaccine hesitancy. This systematic review aimed to analyze strategies used to improve the acceptance of vaccines, address doubts, and/or increase confidence and motivation in routine vaccination across all age groups. Methods: A systematic review was conducted of the MEDLINE, Dialnet, Scielo, CINAHL, and CENTRAL databases between 2018 and 2023. The inclusion criterion was full-text studies in English or Spanish that improve the degree of acceptance of vaccines and were evaluated by vaccination rate or pre- or postintervention tests. For data extraction, each study was categorized as community education, tailored messages, media, and new technologies. Results: A total of 1938 studies were identified, 38 of which were selected. New technology-based interventions used in the adult population for several vaccines offer broad reach, user interaction, and data accessibility. Tailored message strategies were used mainly among parents to foster strong relationships through respectful and empathetic dialog. Community education programs were targeted mainly at adolescents, emphasizing the use of structured, appropriate and interactive materials. Media campaigns were used as a support strategy for community education and new technology strategies due to their simplicity, wide coverage, and reach. Conclusions: The best strategies for reducing hesitancy are multicomponent interventions with structured and organized educational content based on the reasons for hesitancy and tailored to the target population. Therefore, caution must be taken when applying interventions, given that no single strategy can address this issue. Full article

Vaccine marketing authorization holders (MAHs) are responsible for the conduction of global vaccine pharmacovigilance on their vaccine products. A safety signal is detected when a new adverse event (AE) or aspect of an AE occurs after exposure to the vaccine and warrants further investigation to determine whether a causal association may exist. Signal detection and evaluation (signal management) begins at the start of vaccine development, before an MAH submits an application for authorization to regulatory authorities, continues through the course of all clinical trials, and carries on beyond development into the post-marketing phase. As long as the vaccine remains authorized anywhere in the world, pharmacovigilance continues. During the time that the COVID-19 vaccine became widely available after authorization and approval, clinical trials were also ongoing, and therefore all clinical development and post-authorization safety information was closely monitored for safety by the MAH. MAH pharmacovigilance activities were adapted to manage the unprecedented volume of safety information that became available within a very short timeframe following worldwide vaccination campaigns. No vaccine had previously been administered to such a large number of individuals in such a short time, nor had there previously been a public health vaccine experience that was the subject of so many medical and non-medical writings. The MAH’s COVID-19 vaccine signal detection methods included the continuous review of accruing clinical trial data and the quantitative and qualitative analyses of spontaneously reported experiences. Review of published and unpublished medical literature and epidemiology-based analyses such as observed vs. expected analysis based on reported adverse events following immunization (AEFIs) played key roles in pharmacovigilance and signal management. All methods of signal detection and evaluation have caveats, but when considered in totality, can advance our understanding of a vaccine’s safety profile and therefore the risk–benefit considerations for vaccinating both individuals and large populations of people. All COVID-19 vaccines authorized for use were subject to an unprecedented level of pharmacovigilance by their individual MAHs, national regulatory authorities, public health organizations, and others during the years immediately following regulatory authorization and full approval. The intense worldwide focus on pharmacovigilance and the need for MAHs and regulatory/health authorities to quickly evaluate incoming safety information, spurred frequent and timely communications between national and regional health authorities and between MAHs and regulatory/health authorities, spotlighting a unique opportunity for individuals committed to patient safety to share important accruing safety information in a collegial and less traditionally formal manner than usual. The global pandemic precipitated by the SARS-CoV-2 virus created a significant impetus for MAHs to develop innovative vaccines to change the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. Pharmacovigilance also had to meet unprecedented needs. In this article, unique aspects of COVID-19 vaccine pharmacovigilance encountered by one MAH will be summarized. Full article

Benzodiazepines (BZDs), potent sedative and hypnotic drugs widely prescribed in psychiatry, pose a high risk of dependence and are globally abused. This study used wastewater-based epidemiology to investigate the consumption patterns of BZDs across four wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Wuhu, China. A total of 16 BZDs and three metabolites were detected in influents and effluents, with concentrations reaching up to 90 ng/L (quetiapine fumarate) and 18.4 ng/L (diazepam). Most BZDs had a poor removal efficiency except quetiapine fumarate (>98% removal). The consumptions of BZDs in WWTPs ranged from <0.02 (lormetazepam) to 2700 mg/day/1000 people (quetiapine fumarate). Seasonal variation was found in BZD usage, where the consumptions in winter and spring were significantly higher than those in summer and autumn. It was worth noting that nimetazepam may be abused during the sampling campaign. Urban areas with higher housing prices match higher BZD consumption, correlating with greater stress and insomnia rates. This study reveals the relationship between socioeconomic factors and BZD consumption patterns, provide a new path to addressing community public health. Full article

This article for the first time examines the activities of transnational information campaigns initiated by young Shiʿa Muslims across European, Russian, and Armenian cities. These campaigns aim to disseminate knowledge about Imam Hussain and his mission to non-Shiʿa audiences. The campaigns serve as vivid examples of the struggles faced by Muslims in relatively hostile contexts as they seek integration and acceptance as law-abiding and peaceful citizens. They also represent new avenues of Islamic activism, focusing on dismantling stereotypes and correcting “misunderstandings” within host societies. Drawing on semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and an analysis of campaign handouts and social media content between 2018 and 2024, this study explores how campaigners adapt the narrative of the Karbala tragedy—widely regarded as the metahistorical cornerstone of Shiʿa identity—to make it accessible and relevant to external audiences. These strategies enable campaigners to engage with out-group communities, testing and refining effective methods for presenting this pivotal historical event. The findings reveal that, through this process, the Karbala narrative undergoes both content-based and linguistic modifications, while the concept of justice—central to the commemoration of this tragedy—is reinterpreted in new contexts. This research contributes to the understanding of transnational Islamic activism and highlights the importance of strategic communication in fostering intercultural dialogue and promoting mutual understanding in diverse societies. Pandemics of infectious disease and growing anti-microbial resistance (AMR) pose major threats to global health, trade, and security. Conflict and climate change compound and accelerate these threats. The One Health approach recognizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, but is grounded in the biomedical model, which reduces health to the absence of disease. Biomedical responses are insufficient to meet the challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic is the most recent example of the failure of this biomedical model to address global threats, the limitations of laboratory-based surveillance, and the exclusive focus on vaccination for disease control. This paper examines the current paradigm through the lens of polio and the global campaign to eradicate it, as well as other infectious threats including mpox and drug-resistant tuberculosis, particularly in the context of armed conflict. Decades before vaccines became widely available, public health measures—ventilation, chlorination, nutrition and sanitation— led to longer, healthier, and even taller lives. Chlorine, our primary tool of public health, conquered cholera and transformed infection control in hospitals. The World Health Organization (WHO), part of the One Health alliance, focuses mainly on antibiotics and vaccines to reduce deaths due to superbugs and largely ignores the critical role of chlorine to control water-borne diseases (including polio) and other infections. Moreover, the One Health approach ignores armed conflict. Contemporary wars are characterized by indiscriminate bombing of civilians, attacks targeting healthcare, mass displacement and lack of humanitarian access, conditions which drive polio outbreaks and incubate superbugs. We discuss the growing trend of attacks on healthcare and differentiate between types: community-driven attacks targeting vaccinators in regions like Pakistan, and state-sponsored attacks by governments such as those of Syria and Russia that weaponize healthcare to deliberately harm whole populations. Both fuel outbreaks of disease. These distinct motivations necessitate tailored responses, yet the WHO aggregates these attacks in a manner that hampers effective intervention. While antimicrobial resistance is predictable, the escalating pandemic is the consequence of our reliance on antibiotics and commitment to a biomedical model that now borders on pathological. Our analysis reveals the international indenture to the biomedical model as the basis of disease control is the root driver of AMR and vaccine-derived polio. The unique power of vaccines is reduced by vaccination-only strategy, and in fact breeds vaccine-derived polio. The non-specific effects of vaccines must be leveraged, and universal vaccination must be supplemented by international investment in water chlorination. This will reduce health costs and strengthen global health security. While vaccines are an important weapon to combat pandemics and AMR, they must be accompanied by the entire arsenal of public health interventions. Full article

The red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) is a widely distributed invasive species that is listed in the Delivering Alien Invasive Species Inventory for Europe. Native to North America, it has been introduced to numerous regions, such as the Canary Islands, Spain. Previous studies have confirmed the role of this crayfish in the maintenance of several foodborne pathogenic bacteria. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the main zoonotic bacterial and parasitic pathogens present in a P. clarkii population introduced to the island of Tenerife, Canary Islands, and to assess the potential risk to public health and native fauna. A total of 22 crayfish from Tenerife were analyzed using Biofire FilmArray Gastrointestinal Panels and culture–PCR methods. The results show the presence of Plesiomonas shigelloides, Shigella/enteroinvasive Escherichia coli, enteropathogenic Escherichia coli, Salmonella ser. Enteritidis, Salmonella ser. Typhimurium, and Salmonella ser. Typhi. These results demonstrate the presence of a variety of pathogenic bacteria in the red swamp crayfish in Tenerife that represent a significant concern in terms of public health and conservation. Implementing educational campaigns to inform the community about the risks associated with handling and consuming contaminated crayfish, as well as initiatives for the restoration of the contaminated ecosystem, are necessary to prevent the transmission of the foodborne pathogens. Asbestos, also known by its commercial name “amianthus”, has been widely used in various industries due to its unique properties. However, the extensive use of asbestos has had serious consequences for human health, most notably asbestosis, an irreversible chronic lung disease. Asbestosis increases the risk of lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, both of which are fatal. Applied sciences such as microscopy (optical and scanning electron microscopy) and geochemistry have been fundamental in characterizing the mineral fibers of asbestos to understand its role in human health. We previously used these techniques to characterize these fibers; in this study, we explored the issues associated with asbestos and asbestosis, as well as the challenges facing science communication strategies in effectively informing society and workers about these risks. The lack of scientific culture, in general, has led to a lack of public awareness of the risks of asbestos. As such, effective communication and outreach plans and strategies, including the visualization of the fibers to demonstrate why problems arise if inhaled, must be implemented to address these challenges. Educational campaigns, guidelines, and plans that are informative and actionable, teaching workers, communities, and the public about the risks of asbestos are crucial. A general knowledge of mineralogy and geochemistry is needed, and providing and disseminating proper scientific communication may help to close the knowledge gap. We use examples and experience from Spain and Italy to illustrate this matter, as we have been working on the characterization of ultramafic complexes in these countries for more than ten years. Additionally, because these countries have strict laws for asbestos-containing materials, they are currently involved in retiring and demolishing buildings and infrastructure that contain asbestos. Fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are widely considered as a vital candidate of aerial base station in beyond Fifth Generation (B5G) systems. Accurate knowledge of air-to-ground (A2G) wireless propagation is important for A2G communication system development and testing where, however, there is still a lack of A2G wideband channel models for such a purpose. In this paper, we present a wideband fixed-wing UAV-based A2G channel measurement campaign at 2.7 GHz, and consider typical flight phases, based on which a wide-sense stationary uncorrelated scattering (WSSUS)-based tapped delay line (TDL) wideband channel model is proposed. Parameters of individual channel taps are analyzed in terms of gain, amplitude distribution, Rice factor and delay-Doppler spectrum. It is shown that UAV flight phases significantly influence the channel tap parameters. Particularly, the “Bell”-type spectrum is found to be the most suitable model for the delay-Doppler spectrum under various flight scenarios for A2G propagation. The proposed channel model can provide valuable assistance and guidance for UAV communication system evaluation and network planning. Full article

Introduction: The Health Belief Model (HBM) has been widely studied, but it is unclear how social media post creators use HBM constructs to influence the public’s awareness of health topics, particularly for COVID-19 preventative health behaviors. Moreover, there is limited knowledge about how content creators enhance user engagement with COVID-19 vaccine tweets. Methods: A content analysis of COVID-19 vaccine tweets (n = 362) examined how HBM constructs were used in social media posts and their relationship to content creator characteristics (e.g., race, education level) and user engagement behaviors (e.g., number of favorites). Findings: Content creators’ tweets about COVID-19-related topics generally centered on two HBM constructs—benefits and barriers—while fewer tweets emphasized perceived susceptibility or self-efficacy; tweets containing these constructs were retweeted less often. Findings revealed that tweets from politicians, health experts, and white and Asian sources emphasized the perceived benefits of the COVID-19 vaccine. Individual tweets, especially from Black individuals and celebrities, generated more user engagement. Conclusions: Understanding the factors that contribute to social media user engagement with health-related content is important for designing more focused and impactful health communication campaigns and promoting healthier habits and perspectives. Thus, by demonstrating the possible relevance of the HBM to digital communication strategies or health campaigns, our study provides useful guidance for health promoters and policymakers who use social media to raise public health awareness. Monitoring and protecting flowing watercourses is a complex and challenging task that requires the collaboration and coordination of various stakeholders such as governments, industries, farmers, consumers and environmental groups. The study of the dynamics of the concentration of polluting factors and especially the concentrations of heavy metals and highlighting a seasonal variation is a necessary element from this point of view. In this article, we present the results of our analyses carried out in two measurement campaigns executed in 10 monitoring points along the Danube River, between Braila city and Isaccea city in the pre-deltaic area, during the summer season and autumn season 2022. The importance of this area is given by the fact that the Danube Delta is part of the UNESCO heritage, and the monitoring of polluting factors is a necessity in the desire to protect this area. The data measured during the July and August 2022 campaign cover a wide range of chemical species: Phosphate, CCO, CBO5, NH4+, N-NO2, N-NO3, N-Total, P-PO4 3−, SO42−, Cl, phenols, as well as metals with a harmful effect: Al, As, Cd, Cr, Fe. The study includes an evaluation based on the statistical approach of the results to highlight the significant correlations and differences identified between the two data sets. Next, to highlight the obtained results, a numerical model was considered using HEC-RAS and ESRI ArcGIS applications in a two-dimensional unsteady flow model in order to obtain the non-homogenous concentrations’ distributions in the studied area. These two-dimensional models have been less studied in the specialized literature. In this way, interesting results could be obtained, and prediction methods regarding the dynamics of metal concentrations could be structured. The data obtained were used for the terrain model from the USGS service, and the flows of the Danube and its two tributaries were simulated using the data provided by the national services. In this work, we present the results obtained for the dynamics of the concentrations of the metals Al, As, Cd, Cr and Fe and the evaluation of the specific absorption coefficients for the explanation and correlation with the results of the measurements. Except for the numerical model presented, we would like to highlight the existence of some contributions of the main tributaries of the Danube in the study area. Such a systematic study has not been carried out due to conditions imposed by the border authorities. From this point of view, this study has an element of originality. The study is part of a more complex project in which the spatio-temporal distribution of the polluting factors in the water was evaluated, and the habitats in the study area were inventoried—especially those of community interest. In this way, we were able to expose the self-purification capacity of the Danube and highlight the existence of a concentration reduction gradient along the course of the river. The aspects related to the influence of the distribution of polluting factors on the state of health will be the subject of another article. Full article
