Light Fidelity (LiFi) has emerged as a promising wireless communication technology for enabling indoor networks in future sixth-generation (6G) systems. It can offer very high data rates, low electromagnetic interference, elevated spatial reuse and inherent physical layer security advantages. In LiFi-based indoor deployments, however, the characteristically small coverage footprint of each AP can produce frequent handovers when users move across the indoor environment. Conventional key management approaches adopt static key lifetime policies that expire session keys after a fixed duration regardless of user movement conditions. This creates a fundamental inefficiency where static policies can generate key refresh operations that are not required. Further, an additional signaling overhead can happen when users are stationary or leave session keys active for comparatively long periods under high mobility conditions. This paper proposes a lightweight mobility-aware adaptive session key lifetime control mechanism that dynamically adjusts session key validity duration. The mechanism introduces a three-component mobility metric that aggregates user speed, handover frequency and AP residence time which is used to compute a normalized mobility risk score. The mobility score drives an adaptive lifetime formula that contracts or extends key validity according to mobility-associated exposure conditions. The proposed mechanism operates entirely within the post-authentication session phase and does not introduce new cryptographic primitives, authentication protocols or key generation algorithms. Compared with fixed session key lifetime policies of 120 s, 300 s and 600 s, the Adaptive Key Lifetime Control Engine (AKLCE) dynamically adapts the session key lifetime according to user mobility, reducing refresh operations and signaling overhead under low mobility while progressively shortening the scheduled key lifetime under higher mobility to limit key exposure. This adaptive behavior enables AKLCE to provide mobility-dependent adaptation of session key lifetime that enables a flexible trade-off between key exposure duration and signaling overhead. Microplastics (MPs) pollution caused by agricultural film residues, organic fertilizer application, sewage irrigation, and atmospheric deposition has gradually become an unignorable interference factor to the sustainable development of the rhizosphere soil and crop in farmland. However, their specific impacts on the rhizosphere and crops remain unclear. Therefore, this review focuses on the current knowledge on the response mechanisms of rhizosphere soil and crops to MP contamination. The density of MPs is generally lower than that of soil mineral particles. Their substantial accumulation in soil can significantly reduce both the bulk density (by increasing total porosity) and the particle density (by diluting the heavy solid phase with light plastic components). The introduction of MPs disrupts the normal metabolism of soil bacterial communities; a disruption directly reflected in functional genes associated with carbon cycling. MPs can interfere with the activity of key metabolic enzymes involved in fungal nutrient cycling, thereby disrupting normal energy allocation and material metabolism. Viruses can regulate the turnover and metabolism of microbial communities through lytic and lysogenic cycles, consequently influencing the carbon fate of MPs. The toxicity and underlying mechanisms of MPs on soil fauna primarily manifest in aspects such as feeding behavior, growth and development, oxidative stress, intestinal toxicity, and reproductive toxicity. The direct effects of MPs on plants include physical barriers and mechanical damage, induction of oxidative stress, interference with nutrient uptake, disruption of photosynthesis and carbon metabolism, and disruption of plant hormone networks. This review identifies critical knowledge gaps, particularly regarding crop quality, field-based soil faunal studies, virus-microbe interactions, and degradation products, and proposes future research directions to better understand the risks MPs pose to agricultural sustainability and food safety. Background/Objectives: Sleep quality, anxiety symptoms, physical activity, musculoskeletal pain, and multimorbidity are interrelated health domains, but evidence examining these factors together among adults aged ≥50 years in Saudi Arabia remains limited. This study described their prevalence and assessed cross-sectional associations among these domains. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey using convenience sampling was conducted in Saudi Arabia between December 2024 and April 2025. Participants completed measures of musculoskeletal pain, self-reported morbidity, physical activity (Global Physical Activity Questionnaire), sleep quality (Brief Version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), and anxiety symptoms (Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7). Associations were examined using Spearman rank correlations and logistic regression with core adjustment for age, sex, and BMI. The Benjamini–Hochberg false discovery rate correction was applied to eight focal comparisons; Firth penalized logistic regression was applied as a sensitivity analysis for models in which multimorbidity was the outcome. Results: The sample included 298 adults (mean age 58.2 +/− 6.3 years; 75.5% male). Musculoskeletal pain was reported by 73.8%, multimorbidity by 8.4%, poor sleep by 43.3%, and moderate-to-severe anxiety symptoms by 23.8%. Better sleep quality was moderately associated with lower anxiety severity (Spearman rho = −0.45, p < 0.001). Poor sleep was associated with higher odds of moderate-to-severe anxiety symptoms (OR 6.49, 95% CI 3.45–12.20), and low total physical activity was associated with higher odds of both moderate-to-severe anxiety symptoms (OR 7.87, 95% CI 2.68–23.08) and poor sleep (OR 5.09, 95% CI 2.40–10.83). These focal associations remained significant after FDR correction. In an exploratory sensitivity analysis, the poor sleep–multimorbidity association remained comparable when Firth regression was applied (OR 2.71, 95% CI 1.12–7.06; p = 0.027). Conclusions: In this online convenience sample of adults aged ≥50 years, sleep quality, anxiety symptoms, and total physical activity showed consistent cross-sectional associations. Findings involving multimorbidity were exploratory because of the limited number of events. These results require confirmation in representative longitudinal studies. Full article

This study examines the socio-spatial dynamics of rural overtourism and landscape commodification in a peripheral municipality in Northwestern Italy. Employing a qualitative, longitudinal ethnographic design, data were collected between May 2020 and October 2021 in San Giovanni (Piedmont). The methodology combined extensive participant observation in public, commercial, and agricultural spaces with ethnographic interviews with six stakeholder groups: local promoters, municipal administrators, professional farmers, long-term residents, shopkeepers, and visiting tourists. Qualitative data were processed using inductive thematic analysis. The results indicate that visitor surges were initiated endogenously by local promoters through the installation of an open-access, gamified “Big Bench” attraction designed to counter long-term demographic and economic contraction. The influx of day-trippers generated localized spatial intrusion, traffic congestion, and physical disruptions to agricultural operations during peak harvest periods, as well as to residents’ daily activities. Rather than driving generalized economic revitalization, the intervention produced host–visitor friction and intra-community polarization between local promoters seeking external visibility and residents experiencing spatial disruptions and loss of privacy. The study demonstrates that overtourism can develop endogenously through promoter-led self-commodification and provides a three-tiered governance framework encompassing policy, destination management, and community-level strategies for fragile rural territories. Wide- and narrow-band composite-axis servo systems in inter-satellite laser communication face critical challenges in balancing high-precision dynamic tracking and strong robust anti-disturbance performance under the coupling effect of high-speed inter-satellite relative motion and multiple strong disturbances. To address this issue, this paper proposes a composite control method integrating adaptive non-singular terminal sliding-mode control and a nonlinear extended state observer. First, a full-link dynamic model covering electromechanical coupling and inter-axis disturbance transmission is constructed to accurately quantify the disturbance characteristics of coarse- and fine-tracking loops. Second, a third-order nonlinear extended state observer is designed to realize real-time high-precision estimation and feedforward compensation of lumped disturbances. On this basis, a self-consistent adaptive non-singular terminal sliding-mode control law is formulated. Under the explicitly stated observer-residual and reaching-phase assumptions, the ideal continuous model provides finite-time convergence of the sliding variable and tracking error. Finally, a wide- and narrow-band cooperative strategy based on error frequency division is introduced to achieve complementary performance between large-stroke coarse tracking and ultra-high-precision fine tracking. Numerical simulations yield a steady-state tracking-error point estimate of 0.30 μrad and a 20 dB disturbance-suppression bandwidth of 1200 Hz. In the semi-physical dynamic-tracking test, the proposed controller limits the peak error to 1.2 μrad; the instrument-only expanded uncertainty of the detector output is estimated as 0.12 μrad (coverage factor k = 2). At the reported evaluation points, the proposed method outperforms PID, conventional sliding-mode control, and linear active-disturbance-rejection control. Deterministic robustness simulations also show smaller tracking errors and shorter recovery times under parameter perturbation, actuator saturation, and temporary link occlusion. No Monte Carlo loss-of-lock probability is claimed. Full article

This qualitative study explored the conditions that shape effective volunteer activity organisation by emerging adult university students (aged 18–25) in a religiously and ethnically diverse Thai setting. The study was conducted at Prince of Songkla University (PSU), Hat Yai Campus, where Buddhist and Muslim students form the two largest religious communities. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with 30 purposively selected student volunteer leaders and analysed using a hybrid deductive-inductive content analysis approach. Four conditions emerged as foundational: (1) motivational readiness to engage across cultural boundaries; (2) substantive knowledge of cross-cultural communication, both verbal and non-verbal; (3) the capacity to examine and adjust one’s own cultural assumptions; and (4) active, structurally expressed respect for religious and cultural diversity. The findings reveal that family-transmitted stereotypes, knowledge gaps regarding Islamic practice, and the absence of institutional accommodation jointly constrain inclusive participation. Drawing on Cultural Intelligence (CQ) theory and Putnam’s social capital framework, the study advances two arguments: first, that intercultural competence among emerging adult volunteers cannot be reduced to individual skill and disposition; and second, that institutional programme design—schedules, catering arrangements, and physical infrastructure—constitutes an independent determinant of inclusion that CQ frameworks have not yet adequately theorised. The four-condition model offers a structured, trainable framework for volunteer leadership development and extends the literature on civic formation and intercultural learning during the formative years of emerging adulthood. Sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) is a popular aromatic and medicinal crop cultivated globally. While its essential oils possess inherent antimicrobial properties, the plant remains highly susceptible to various pathogens. This study investigated the impact of a beneficial synthetic microbial community (SynCom)—composed of eight strains with proven antimicrobial and plant growth-promoting activities—on basil growth, ecophysiology, and metabolic profile in an aeroponic system. Although SynCom inoculation significantly enhanced photochemical efficiency, it did not yield significant gains in total biomass. Instead, inoculated plants exhibited a strategic reallocation of resources toward structural and chemical defenses. This physiological shift was physically manifested as denser plant canopies and lower specific leaf area (SLA). Untargeted metabolomic profiling identified 167 significantly altered metabolites. Notably, SynCom inoculation increased abscisic acid (ABA) turnover and redirected tryptophan metabolism from growth-promoting auxins to defense-related indoles and kynurenine derivatives. Furthermore, inoculation enriched the leaves with essential amino acids and a diverse array of protective secondary metabolites, including phenylpropanoids, flavonoids, and terpenoids. These findings demonstrate that specialized microbial inoculants can induce a transition toward fortified phenotypes and likely enhance plant resilience, even in the absence of traditional biomass gains. Prototyping has evolved from a simple representational artifact into a central mechanism for learning, communication, risk reduction, and decision-making in engineering design. Despite its widespread adoption across engineering disciplines, existing research remains fragmented across domains, methodologies, and application contexts, making it difficult to distinguish broadly applicable principles from context-specific practices. This paper presents a critical review of prototyping research in engineering design, synthesizing evidence from peer-reviewed journal articles and conference papers from foundational studies of the 1980s to recent developments in rapid prototyping, additive manufacturing, digital engineering, and Industry 4.0 systems. A thematic literature review was conducted to identify recurring principles, domain-dependent variations, emerging trends, and persistent limitations in current prototyping practices. The review examines key factors influencing prototyping effectiveness, including purpose, fidelity, timing, stakeholder involvement, modeling and analysis, risk management, economic considerations, and learning-oriented iteration. Particular attention is given to how uncertainty influences prototyping decisions and the ways in which different uncertainty conditions influence the selection, scope, and implementation of prototyping activities. The findings indicate that prototyping is best understood as a context-dependent decision-support activity whose effectiveness depends on the uncertainties, constraints, stakeholders, and design objectives associated with a specific engineering problem. Although several common principles emerge across engineering domains, substantial differences exist in how prototypes are used to support design decisions and system validation. The review identifies research gaps related to uncertainty-driven fidelity selection, integration of modeling, experimentation, and verification activities, and the limited availability of systematic guidance for selecting prototyping strategies across diverse engineering contexts. Future research should focus on generalized prototyping frameworks, quantitative decision-support methods for uncertainty management, enhanced stakeholder integration, and the continued convergence of physical and virtual prototyping environments in next-generation engineering systems. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a clinical condition defined by the coexistence of interconnected cardiometabolic risk factors, including central obesity, dyslipidemia, elevated blood pressure, and impaired glucose regulation, which collectively increase the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. Beyond these clinical diagnostic features, MetS is characterized by complex pathophysiological alterations involving systemic dysregulation of metabolic signaling across adipose tissue, skeletal muscle, liver, vascular endothelium, and the immune system. Key molecular alterations include impaired insulin receptor substrate (IRS)–Akt signaling, chronic nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) activation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and oxidative stress. Physical exercise is recognized as a pleiotropic biomedical intervention capable of restoring metabolic homeostasis through coordinated modulation of intracellular signaling pathways and inter-organ communication. Exercise activates AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), enhances peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator-1 alpha (PGC-1α)-mediated mitochondrial biogenesis, and stimulates nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)-dependent antioxidant responses. These adaptations improve glucose uptake, enhance fatty acid oxidation, and reduce ectopic lipid accumulation across metabolically active tissues. At the systemic level, skeletal muscle functions as an endocrine organ by releasing myokines such as irisin, interleukin-6 (IL-6), and fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21), which contribute to metabolic regulation across the liver, adipose tissue, and vasculature. These exercise-induced signals promote immune modulation, reduce pro-inflammatory cytokine production, and improve endothelial function. Different exercise modalities including aerobic, resistance, and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) activate both common and modality-specific molecular pathways, supporting individualized exercise strategies. Collectively, exercise targets the multi-organ pathophysiology of MetS and provides a mechanistic foundation for precision exercise medicine in cardiometabolic disease management. Full article

Background: Physical exercise is a vital component of cancer rehabilitation, with demonstrated improvements in cancer health-related outcomes, relapse rates, mortality and overall survival, yet global participation remains low. In Singapore, uptake of community cancer rehabilitation is limited despite high prevalence of treatment-related impairments. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among adults (≥21 years) enrolled in the Singapore Cancer Society Rehabilitation Center between December 2021 and March 2023. Clinical data was collected from medical records and assessments included the Distress Thermometer (DT), Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (Brief IPQ), and modified Bandura’s Exercise Self-Efficacy (ESE) scale. Adequate exercise was defined as ≥150 min/week of moderate intensity aerobic exercise and ≥2 days/week of resistance training. Regression analyses were performed to identify factors associated with meeting recommended moderate-intensity aerobic exercise levels. Results: The median age of our study cohort was 60.0 (IQR: 51.0–66.3) years. Of 132 analyzed participants, only 29.5% met recommended aerobic exercise levels and 9.1% met resistance training level recommendations. The median duration of moderate intensity aerobic exercise per week was 85.0 (30.0–180.0) minutes. The three most common cancer diagnoses amongst the participants were breast (53.8%), gastrointestinal (11.4%) and gynecological (7.6%) cancers. Clinically significant distress (DT ≥ 5) was present in 40.9% of patients. Multivariate regression analyses revealed that having lower ESE was the only significant psychosocial factor associated with a lower likelihood of meeting recommended aerobic exercise activity levels (OR = 0.856; 95% CI = 0.787–0.931; p < 0.001). Conclusions: Our study found a low prevalence of meeting recommended physical activity levels amongst our cohort of Asian cancer survivors enrolled in a community rehabilitation program in Singapore. Reinforcing the need for future longitudinal studies involving Asian cancer survivors to explore additional factors associated with physical inactivity and whether behavioral interventions targeting ESE will improve physical activity participation. Cross-border trade security risks are often embedded in inconsistencies among trade documents, logistics trajectories, hardware sensor states, and financial settlement activities. Existing methods primarily rely on structured declaration fields, making it difficult to verify digital declarations against actual physical processes or to generate complete evidence suitable for regulatory review. To address these challenges, TradeSense-EQA is proposed as a cross-border trade security anomaly detection and evidence-grounded English question-answering framework. Multisource sensing information, including trade documents, GPS/AIS trajectories, RFID records, electronic seal events, port weighing data, temperature and humidity measurements, vibration signals, container door states, and visual images, is jointly modeled within the framework. The reliability-aware representation module dynamically adjusts sensing-channel weights according to data missingness, sampling intervals, device health states, and communication quality. The trade-process-constrained module identifies anomalies across declaration, packing, transportation, transshipment, arrival, and customs clearance stages and generates process-consistent evidence chains. The evidence-grounded question-answering module answers English trade risk questions on the basis of verified documentary fields and sensor records, while confidence estimation and abstention mechanisms are incorporated to reduce factual hallucinations. Experimental results demonstrate that TradeSense-EQA achieved an Accuracy of 0.918, a Precision of 0.909, a Recall of 0.897, a Macro-F1 of 0.903, and a ROC-AUC of 0.958 on the cross-border trade anomaly detection task, outperforming baseline methods including XGBoost, LightGBM, TCN, Transformer, BERT, CLIP, and VisualBERT. On the English trade risk question-answering task, Exact Match, Token-level F1, BLEU, ROUGE-L, and BERTScore reached 0.782, 0.851, 0.668, 0.801, and 0.934, respectively. Ablation results further confirmed the effectiveness of hardware sensing input, reliability-aware weighting, declaration–fact alignment, process-graph reasoning, and evidence-constrained generation. The proposed framework provides a reliable, interpretable, and auditable artificial intelligence-driven sensing solution for customs supervision, port security, international logistics review, and trade-background investigation. Background: Poor adherence to home exercise programs is a persistent challenge in physical rehabilitation and beyond. Data suggest that follow-up telehealth visits featuring behavior change techniques can improve adherence. However, the optimal frequency of behavioral support for effective self-management of technology-enabled home exercise programs remains unclear. This paper investigates how adherence to home exercise varies with the number of follow-up visits holding the type of exercise constant and measuring adherence objectively. Methods: A secondary analysis of adherence was conducted on participants from the VIGOROUS five-site, single-blind, and randomized controlled trial. Chronic (>6 months) community-resident stroke survivors with mild-to-moderate upper extremity hemiparesis (n = 111) were assigned 15 h of asynchronous video game-based home exercise over 3 weeks. Participants received behavioral support during (a) one single in-person session, (b) four in-person sessions, or (c) four in-person sessions plus six remote teleconsultations. Each consultation incorporated standardized behavior change techniques—contracting, feedback, self-monitoring, action planning, and guided problem solving—to promote increased paretic arm use during daily activities. The primary outcome was adherence (minutes exercising), objectively captured by the gaming system for 87 participants. Results: Six telehealth visits with remote therapeutic monitoring (RTM) increased home exercise completion by 3.3 h [95% CI: 0.008, 6.60]; each remote or in-person consultation was associated with an estimated 34 min of additional asynchronous home exercise. Conclusions: RTM, which does not require travel to a healthcare facility, is a time-efficient modality to enhance therapeutic engagement. Behaviorally focused telehealth visits boost stroke survivors’ adherence to a structured home exercise program. Full article

Patient-Reported Receipt of Satisfactory Healthy Lifestyle Guidance and Associated Factors Among Outpatients in China: A Nationwide Cross-Sectional Survey

Background: Healthy lifestyle guidance is an important component of outpatient preventive care, yet evidence is limited on whether outpatients receive satisfactory guidance across multiple lifestyle domains. This study examined receipt of satisfactory healthy lifestyle guidance and its associated factors among outpatients in China. Methods: This national multicenter cross-sectional study used data from the outpatient component of the fifth National Third-Party Evaluation of the Action Plan for Further Improving Healthcare Services. A total of 31,599 outpatients from 143 tertiary public hospitals across all 31 provincial-level administrative regions of mainland China were included. The primary outcome was receipt of satisfactory healthy lifestyle guidance, defined as receiving at least one type of guidance and reporting satisfaction or high satisfaction. Mixed-effects logistic regression models with hospital-level random intercepts were used to identify associated factors. Results: Dietary guidance was the most frequently reported domain, followed by physical activity, weight management, and smoking cessation and alcohol reduction guidance. Overall, most outpatients were classified as having received satisfactory healthy lifestyle guidance. In the fully adjusted model, male sex and hypertension were associated with higher odds of satisfactory guidance, whereas a greater number of chronic conditions and unclear physician type were associated with lower odds. Satisfaction with history taking and disease communication and perceived respect and comfort from healthcare professionals were strongly associated with satisfactory healthy lifestyle guidance. However, these contemporaneously measured patient-reported indicators may reflect overlapping dimensions of patients’ overall outpatient care experience. Sensitivity analyses yielded broadly consistent findings. Conclusions: Satisfactory healthy lifestyle guidance was common among outpatients in China’s tertiary public hospitals, but guidance was unevenly distributed across lifestyle domains. Patients’ evaluations of satisfactory healthy lifestyle guidance were closely associated with their broader communication and interpersonal care experiences. However, because these measures were self-reported and assessed contemporaneously, the observed associations should not be interpreted causally. Full article

Cover cropping can be a promising management strategy to improve soil health in the tropics. Our study evaluated physical, chemical, and microbiological indicators of soil health three years after implementing a maize and cowpea cover crop rotation with five fertilizer rates in replicated plots on a Torrifluventic Haplustepts in the southern semiarid coast of Puerto Rico. The Soil Management Assessment Framework (SMAF) was used to integrate different soil parameters to provide a comprehensive overview of soil health changes. Water aggregate stability (WAS) was not affected by cover crops. Soil pH significantly decreased with increasing nitrogen (N) fertilization rate and with cover crop rotation. Chemical and microbial indicators of soil health related to organic matter dynamics and nutrient cycling potential [e.g., microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN), potentially mineralizable N (PMN), β-glucosidase activity, combined enzyme activity for carbon (C), N, and phosphorus (P) cycling (β-glucosidase, β-glucosaminidase, and acid phosphatase] were significantly (p < 0.1) improved by cover crop but were not affected by fertilizer rate or cover crop x fertilizer rate. Fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) analysis showed that only G+ bacteria were significantly higher due to cover cropping. Principal component analysis revealed that total FAMEs and markers for G+ bacteria, G− bacteria, actinobacteria, and saprophytic fungi responded similarly to management and were generally influenced by cover cropping. Overall, improvements in microbial communities led to significant increases in key functions supporting soil health and sustainability within just three years of cover cropping adoption. The SMAF, as a well-known soil quality/health index, detected early benefits of using cover crops. Our study provided evidence that these indicators can serve as tools to assist farmers in selecting sustainable management practices such as cover crops in the tropics, yet long-term monitoring is still needed. Background/Objectives: Ageing populations face complex challenges, yet many older adults maintain well-being despite adversity. Understanding resilience offers critical direction for health promotion. This integrative review takes a conceptual and methodological approach to resilience in older adults, with clear implications for geriatric care. The review addresses: (1) how resilience is conceptualised and measured; (2) individual, social, and contextual factors linked to resilience; and (3) the effectiveness of interventions that aim to promote resilience. Methods: Following Whittemore and Knafl’s framework, a systematic search of six databases (PubMed, CINAHL, MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane CENTRAL; 2016–2025) identified 42 empirical studies across 18 countries of diverse designs. Quality was assessed using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool, and thematic analysis identified five convergent themes. Results: Most studies explicitly defined resilience using trait-, process-, or outcome-based frameworks and employed validated instruments, most commonly the CD-RISC. Self-efficacy, spirituality, sense of coherence, and gratitude were consistently associated with resilience. Family relationships, social networks, and community participation were important relational correlates. Health status, education, economic security, and digital literacy were key contextual factors. Six longitudinal studies linked higher resilience to reduced mortality, slower cognitive decline, and attenuated frailty progression. Seven intervention studies, including five randomised controlled trials, supported physical activity, mindfulness, positive thinking training, Tai Chi, and technology-supported exercise as promising intervention modalities, though one web-based programme yielded null findings. Conclusions: Resilience in older adults is a multifaceted and potentially modifiable construct. Growing longitudinal evidence extends its relevance beyond psychological well-being to physical health outcomes, though cross-sectional designs predominate and limit causal inference. Measurement heterogeneity across more than twenty instruments underscores the need for international consensus and culturally valid tools. Larger longitudinal studies and adequately powered trials are needed to guide definitive practice and policy for ageing populations worldwide. Full article
