Predicting and analyzing travel mode choices and purposes are significant to improve urban travel mobility and transportation planning. Previous research has ignored the interconnection between travel mode choices and purposes and thus overlooked their potential contributions to predictions. Using individual travel chain data collected in South Korea, this study proposes a Multi-Task Learning Deep Neural Network (MTLDNN) framework, integrating RFM (Recency, Frequency, Monetary) to achieve a joint prediction of travel mode choices and purposes. The MTLDNN is constructed to share a common hidden layer that extracts general features from the input data, while task-specific output layers are dedicated to predicting travel modes and purposes separately. This structure allows for efficient learning of shared representations while maintaining the capacity to model task-specific relationships. RFM is then integrated to optimize the extraction of users’ behavioral features, which helps in better understanding the temporal and financial patterns of users’ travel activities. The results show that the MTLDNN demonstrates consistent input variable replacement modes and selection probabilities in generating behavioral replacement patterns. Compared to the multinomial logit model (MNL), the MTLDNN achieves lower cross-entropy loss and higher prediction accuracy. The proposed framework could enhance transportation planning, efficiency, and user satisfaction by enabling more accurate predictions. Full article

Micro-mobility, which includes small, lightweight vehicles such as bicycles, electric scooters, and electric bikes, has emerged as a key component of modern urban transportation over the last decade. ESs have transformed how people navigate cities by offering an eco-friendly alternative to traditional transport, improving last-mile connectivity, and reducing traffic congestion. However, they also present challenges related to safety, infrastructure, and regulation. The rising crash rates involving electric scooters pose a significant public safety concern, driven by their novelty and limited research on associated risks. This study investigates factors influencing the adoption and use of electric scooter-sharing services, emphasizing risk perception, cultural norms, technological familiarity, and physical infrastructure. It also examines travel behaviors, common risks, and barriers to adoption. Using data from 254 Israeli participants, including 50 electric scooter users, the research highlights that 48% of users experienced near-miss incidents, and 38% used scooters on vehicular roads. The primary risk was identified as dangerous driver behavior on these roads, while the key barrier to adoption was a high perception of risk or low sense of safety. A structural equation model revealed that risk perception is influenced by gender-related attitudes and subjective norms, which indirectly diminish positive attitudes toward electric scooters and willingness to share and use them. The findings emphasize the importance of a safe physical infrastructure in fostering positive attitudes and promoting electric scooter use. This research provides valuable insights into mitigating risks and improving the adoption of electric scooters as a sustainable micro-mobility option. Full article

This pilot study evaluated the design, usability, and practicality of the dPDT@home kit for treating actinic keratoses (AKs) on the face and scalp. The kit allowed patients to manage their treatment at home, reducing hospital visits and utilizing natural sunlight. While patients were very willing to use the kit again, further studies are required to evaluate outcomes and ascertain the need for additional improvements and support. Background/Objectives: Daylight photodynamic therapy (dPDT) is an established effective therapy for superficial mild-to-moderate actinic keratoses (AKs) on the face and scalp. In this project, we redesigned the delivery of dPDT using design principles and the concept of Realistic Medicine to create the dPDT@home kit. This user-friendly and environmentally conscious kit allows patients to manage their AKs at home, reducing the need for hospital visits and ensuring timely treatment to coincide with appropriate weather conditions and to prevent disease progression due to delays in diagnosis and treatment. The initial pilot phase of the study was to evaluate the usability and convenience of the practicalities of the dPDT@home kit. Methods: Patients were instructed to conduct two dPDT@home kit treatments approximately three weeks apart on suitable weather days. After a follow-up telephone consultation from the specialist PDT nurse following the first treatment, patients then completed an initial questionnaire (Questionnaire 1, Q1) to share their experience. A second questionnaire (Q2) was completed 3–6 months after their final treatment to assess treatment outcomes. Results: A total of 16 patients with AK on the face and/or scalp used the dPDT@home kit. Five patients formed an initial pilot group in 2020/21, whose feedback and involvement informed the final product for the larger group of eleven patients (2021/22). All patients reported no issues with receiving the kit or the pro-drug used in the treatment (Q1). Q2 had an 81.25% return rate, with an average willingness score of 8.9/10 to use dPDT@home again. However, patients expressed doubts about their confidence in the treatment’s efficacy, giving an average score of 6.9/10, with preferences leaning towards other treatments, such as hospital-based PDT or cryotherapy. Conclusions: The pilot deployment of the dPDT@home kit identified suitable patients and highlighted the need for comprehensive training and support for both patients and clinicians to deliver dPDT through this novel approach. The kit can reduce the number of hospital visits, but patients still require supervision, which can be provided remotely. The questionnaire outcomes emphasize the importance of setting patient expectations and taking a holistic approach to managing chronic field-change AK. Additionally, the kit’s recyclable components and reliance on natural sunlight promote sustainability and reduce patient travel. Further evaluation is required to determine cost-efficacy, safety, and the potential place of the dPDT@home kit in the therapeutic management of patients with this common and challenging condition. The implementation of bike-sharing systems represents a novel strategy aimed at enhancing urban mobility by offering shared bicycle services to improve accessibility and user convenience. Nevertheless, there has been a limited exploration into the user demographics of bike-sharing programs on a national scale. This study investigates the socio-demographic characteristics of bike-sharing system users, leveraging the 2017 National Household Travel Survey and negative binomial regression models. It finds that bike-sharing usage is more common among users than non-users, with African American and Hispanic individuals using the system more than other racial groups. Furthermore, low-income individuals (<USD 15,000) and residents of high-density areas (≥25,000 per square mile) show a higher tendency towards bike sharing. The research highlights the lack of national-level studies on bike-sharing user demographics and suggests that future policy and planning should address the needs of specific populations, aiming to enhance urban mobility and accessibility through bike-sharing services. Using satellite telemetry, it is possible to track long-distance migrant birds with high accuracy and greater spatial coverage. However, prior to 2014, less than 1% of bird species in India had been monitored using this technology. Between January and February 2022, we deployed leg-mounted solar GPS/GSM satellite transmitters to Common Cranes and Demoiselle Cranes (two each) to study home ranges, movement, migration patterns, and habitat use. We used 95% kernels to define the total home range size and 50% kernels to delimit the core areas. The winter habitat use was assessed using Generalized Linear Models (GLM). The average home range of Common Cranes and Demoiselle Cranes was estimated as 161.22 ± 172.08 km2 and 971.40 ± 1023.57 km2, respectively. During migration, Common Crane-1 and Common Crane-2 traveled an average of 471.19 ± 442.42 and 176.97 ± 24.82 km per day, and Demoiselle Crane-1 and Demoiselle Crane-2 covered an average daily distance of 168.10 ± 203.77 and 192.97 ± 250.72 km, respectively. Water bodies and croplands were the most important habitat variables influencing crane presence positively. In recent years, the share of food grain crops within the study area has declined from 43% in 1994–1995 to 36% in 2014–2015, while the share of cotton crops has doubled from 11% to 20%, indicating a probable cause of concern in the near future. Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is now considered the most common cause of acute hepatitis worldwide. There are no published data about the prevalence of antibodies to HEV and RNA in donor sera in Estonia, and this precludes planning measures for preventing HEV proliferation through blood transfusion services. Here, were report data from an analysis of 1002 sera on the prevalence of anti-HEV IgG and IgM and the viral RNA. The antibodies were found in 48 donor sera (4.8%); of these, 40 (4%) harbored anti-HEV IgG, 15 (1.5%) contained anti-HEV IgM, and 7 donors had anti-HEV antibodies of both classes simultaneously. HEV RNA was not detected in any blood serum. Statistical associations of infection risk factors (gender, age, travel in the last six months, contact with pigs and/or wild boars in the last six months, consumption of thermally unprocessed/raw pork or boar meat, raw/unfiltered tap water or water from natural sources, unpasteurized farm dairy products, and unwashed berries and/or vegetables) were assessed. None of the listed factors were found to be associated with a higher or lower risk of anti-HEV antibody presence. At the same time, an increasing share of anti-HEV IgG carriers with age was found. The absence of HEV RNA in the analyzed donor plasma samples proves that HEV acute infection prevalence in Estonia does not exceed the average level of European countries. There is no urgent necessity to enter a requirement for a total screening of blood plasma for HEV RNA prevalence in Estonia. Full article

This study explores the transformation of Buddhist culture in the Jiangnan region (present-day southern Jiangsu and northern Zhejiang), driven by wartime disruptions during the transition from the Yuan Dynasty to the Ming. The Yuan Dynasty witnessed the flourishing of Buddhism, and in Jiangnan, the thriving Zen tradition carried on the legacy of the Southern Song Dynasty. Buddhism found many adherents among the affluent gentry class in Jiangnan, fostering a culture of generous charity that sustained and expanded Buddhism in the region. However, the conflicts toward the end of the Yuan Dynasty inflicted considerable damage on the temples, causing monks to flee. Temples, recognizable landmarks during conflicts, were susceptible to military occupation. Visiting Goryeo monks Muhak Jacho and Naong Hyegeun, and Japanese monks Mumon Gensen and Ginan, were forced to abandon their travels and return to their respective homelands, disrupting the once-thriving Buddhist exchange between Jiangnan and broader East Asia. The chaotic environment also fostered alliances between influential monks and regional powers, providing refuge for monks and an opportunity for both sides to forge beneficial connections. Anti-Yuan factions strategically protected revered monks, leveraging their influence to attract literati and intellectuals, who shared common ethical and spiritual values. This dynamic showcased the mutual benefits derived from such collaboration. Through an exploration of the interplay between politics, social forces, and Buddhism, this paper examines the impact of wartime turmoil on the development of Buddhism in the Jiangnan region. (1) Background: With increasing international travel and mass population displacement due to war, famine, climate change, and immigration, pathogens, such as Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), can also spread across borders. Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) most commonly causes skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs), as well as more invasive infections. One clonal strain, S. aureus USA300, originating in the United States, has spread worldwide. We hypothesized that S. aureus USA300 would still be the leading clonal strain among US-born compared to non-US-born residents, even though risk factors for SSTIs may be similar in these two populations (2) Methods: In this study, 421 participants presenting with SSTIs were enrolled from six community health centers (CHCs) in New York City. The prevalence, risk factors, and molecular characteristics for MRSA and specifically clonal strain USA300 were examined in relation to the patients’ self-identified country of birth. (3) Results: Patients born in the US were more likely to have S. aureus SSTIs identified as MRSA USA300. While being male and sharing hygiene products with others were also significant risks for MRSA SSTI, we found exposure to animals, such as owning a pet or working at an animal facility, was specifically associated with risk for SSTIs caused by MRSA USA300. Latin American USA300 variant (LV USA300) was most common in participants born in Latin America. Spatial analysis showed that MRSA USA300 SSTI cases were more clustered together compared to other clonal types either from MRSA or methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) SSTI cases. (4) Conclusions: Immigrants with S. aureus infections have unique risk factors and S. aureus molecular characteristics that may differ from US-born patients. Hence, it is important to identify birthplace in MRSA surveillance and monitoring. Spatial analysis may also capture additional information for surveillance that other methods do not. Full article

Today’s roadways are subject to traffic congestion, the deterioration of surface-assets (often due to the overreliance on private vehicle traffic), increasing vehicle-operation and fuel costs, and pollutant emissions. In Abu Dhabi, private car traffic forms the major share on urban highways, as the infrastructure was built to a high quality and the public transport network needs expansion, resulting in traffic congestion on major highways. These issues are arguably addressable by appropriate decisions at the planning stage. Microsimulation modeling of driving behavior in Abu Dhabi is presented for empirical assessment of traffic management scenarios. This paper presents a technique for developing, calibrating, validating, and the scenario analysis of a detailed VISSIM-based microsimulation model of a 3.5 km section of a 5-lane divided highway in Abu Dhabi. Traffic-count data collected from two sources, i.e., the local transport department (year 2007) and municipality (2007 and 2015–2016) were used. Gaps in traffic-counts between ramps and the highway mainline were noted, which is a common occurrence in real-world data situations. A composite dataset for a representative week in 2015 was constructed, and the model was calibrated and validated with a 15% (<100 vehicles per hour) margin of error. Scenario analysis of a potential public bus transport service operating at 15 min headway and 40% capacity was assessed against the base case, for a 2015–2020 projected period. The results showed a significant capacity enhancement and improvement in the traffic flow. A reduction in the variation between vehicle travel times was observed for the bus-based scenario, as less bottlenecking and congestion were noted for automobiles in the mainline segments. The developed model could be used for further scenario analyses, to find optimized traffic management strategies over the highway’s lifecycle, whereas it could also be used for similar evaluations of other major roads in Abu Dhabi post-calibration. There is an increased understanding of shared human–animal risk in terms of “one welfare”, whereby when animals are at risk, so are people, so preventing injury to one species may also prevent injury to the other. Because transport-related injuries to horses are common, the authors considered this paradigm to study road equine transport-related injuries to humans in New Zealand. The aim was to determine their frequency and associated factors by distributing a survey to horse industry participants through industry organisations asking about their horse activities, road transport experiences, and any related self-injury. There were 112/1067 (10.5%) handlers injured while preparing (13/112), loading (39/112), traveling (6/112), or unloading (33/112). Of these, 40% had multiple injury types, and 33% had several body regions affected. Hand injuries were most common (46%), followed by the foot (25%), arm (17%), and head or face (15%). Median recovery time was 7 days. Injuries were associated with the responder’s industry educational background, years of driving experience, and reporting a horse injured during road transport in the past two years. Wearing helmets and gloves, and adopting strategies designed to eliminate equine injuries associated with the road transport of horses to reduce the risk of injury to their handlers are recommended. The realization of the global “Double carbon” target is closely related to the energy-saving travel of human beings. Along with the increase in the number of new energy vehicles around the world, the number of new energy vehicle charging post carports has also increased. However, the collapse of the carport of the new energy vehicle charging post often occurs. The search for ways to optimize the carport structure construction and build a lighter and more stable charging post carport structure has become one of the hot spots in the new energy vehicle industry. Dragonfly wings have a comprehensive evolution in structure, form and function, and their stiffness, stability and resistance to deformation may be a potential solution to optimize the structure of the shed roof. Inspired by this, the study designs two new energy vehicle charging pile canopies based on the dragonfly wing mesh structure to enhance the loading capacity and structural stability of the canopies. The study firstly concludes that the dragonfly wing mesh can enhance the stiffness through experimental analysis, and simulates and models the structure based on the quadrilateral mesh wrinkling and hexagonal mesh arching in its mesh morphology, combined with the national design standard of the charging pile canopy. Studies on the numerical design experiment of the new energy vehicle charging station canopy model based on finite element software under different natural loads, the deflection of shed under the action of self-weight and the deflection, tensile stress and compressive stress under external load are analyzed, and the results show that: (1) The grid structure of the dragonfly wing bionic charging pile shed can optimize the stiffness of the car charging pile shed. (2) According to the wing structure, the test results of the shed roof structure under different working conditions are better than the national standard. (3) Compared with the vertical load, the transverse load of the arched membrane structure, which is represented by the charging pile shed of the new energy vehicle, is larger. (4) According to the stress point of the shed, the structure constraint of the shed can effectively reduce the pressure on the and share part of the load, which can enhance the stability of the shed. (5) In comparison with the displacement of common carport types, the bionic carport shows superior stability and durability. The new bionic carport structure proposed by the research, with stronger pressure bearing, smaller force deformation and lighter weight, is a kind of membrane structure for stable new energy vehicle charging pile carports, which will help further the optimization and promotion of the new energy vehicle industry. Probabilistic selling (PS) is widely used in the travel industry and marketing practices; how to design a win-win contract using PS in multiple participants’ supply chain to achieve sustainable development has been a worthy concerned issue in the green supply chain development in China. To end this, we consider a three-players supply chain involving two firms and a common retailer in which the firms sell their transparent products via a dual channel, while the retailer sells probabilistic goods by a direct channel. First, the three players’ demand functions are derived using both a Hotelling model and taking account of consumers’ price reference effects. Second, we construct a probabilistic selling model for both decentralized and centralized supply chain systems. The optimal policies for the decentralized system are determined by employing Stackelberg sequential games and an analytical approach. Third, we propose a new three-way revenue sharing contract to deal with channel conflict. Furthermore, we determine the conditions under which the dual-channel supply chain can be coordinated to achieve a win–win situation for all participants. The results indicate that the retailer adopts probabilistic selling depending upon the relative values of the two manufacturers’ production costs in the three-way revenue sharing contract. More interestingly, PS not only can improve the supply chain’s efficiency, but also can coordinate the dual-channel supply chain to achieve a win-win situation for all participants. Finally, we present a numerical analysis to verify our results and a sensitivity analysis of the parameters involved. Full article

Since the early twentieth century, Chinese Muslim elites have been engaged in a movement aimed at developing a new style of education for Muslim children. These Muslim elites traveled to the Middle East and were influenced by the modernizing movement in the broader Islamic world. The new-style schools were no longer attached to mosques, and their curricula emphasized the inclusion of modern secular subjects. Islamic knowledge and disciplines began to be transmitted as modern subjects when taught in modern institutions. Based on the detailed analysis of historical documents, this paper examines the trajectories of several prominent modern institutions in Beijing to illustrate the key aspects of Muslim educational reform. The Muslim elites in charge of this educational reform share the common goals of promoting education and improved livelihoods for the urban Hui Muslims; to date, however, these goals have been only partially met, and a mismatch has emerged between the new knowledge that students have learned and the occupational composition of the Hui people in Niujie (mainly small traders). When the number of older people and the number of families with young children (babies and toddlers) are counted in the total share of persons with disability it is clear that a significant share of people in the world’s tourist market face various obstacles to achieving their fundamental human rights in accessing tourist destinations and related infrastructure. These segments of the market encounter various challenges when they do travel, while many refrain from travelling at all. The theoretical framework examines the concept of accessible tourism and provides a review of the necessary preconditions for forming such a tourist offer available to everyone. Contrary to common belief, accessible tourism surpasses the issues of mobility, as it also includes people with mental, mood, vision, speech, hearing, stroke and other conditions. Examples of good practice are also provided as an incentive for the design and implementation of future inclusive projects, representing the aim of this paper. Research featuring various categories of the tourism offer available to everyone on the case study of Istria County is also presented. The analysis compares major towns in Istria County and the degree of their adaptation to the needs of this market segment, where many practical implications have emerged. The concept of accessibility lies on three key pillars: physical, informative and service based. Thus, removing physical barriers, incorporating the principles of universal design into every new building’s design, as well as educated staff for formulating and implementing strategies and other plans, are key factors in creating additional tourist value. It is fundamental to include people with disabilities in tourism and in society. Full article

Canine mammary tumor (CMT) is the most common tumor in dogs, with 50% of malignant cases, and lacks an effective therapeutic schedule, hence its early diagnosis is of great importance to achieve a good prognosis. Microbiota is believed to play important roles in systemic diseases, including cancers. In this study, 91 tumors, 21 oral and fecal samples in total were collected from dogs with CMTs, and 31 oral and 21 fecal samples from healthy dogs were collected as control. The intratumoral, oral and gut bacterial community of dogs with CMTs and healthy dogs was profiled by 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing and bioinformatic methods. The predominant intratumoral microbes were Ralstonia, Allorhizobium-Neorhizobium-Pararhizobium-Rhizobium, Pseudomonas, unidentified_Chloroplast and Bacteroides at the genus level. In addition, our findings demonstrated striking changes in the composition of the oral and gut bacterium community in the dogs suffered from CMTs compared to the healthy dogs, with a significant increase of Bacteroides which also was the significant microbial biomarker in the oral and gut bacterium community. It showed that the Bacteroides was shared in the intratumoral, oral and intestinal bacterial microbiomes, confirming that microbiota might travel from the mouth to the intestine and finally to the distant mammary tumor tissue. This study provides a new microbiological idea for the treatment of canine mammary tumors, and also provides a theoretical basis for the study of human breast cancer. Full article
