Background/Objectives: Healthcare professionals have begun utilizing a wheelie task for balance assessment in para sport athletes. With recent advancements to incorporate dual-task exercises, the purpose of this study was to evaluate baseline wheelie performance during single and dual-task and measure 1-week and 45-day reliability in a sample of collegiate para sport athletes. Methods: Twenty-five (male n = 14, 56.0%) collegiate para sport athletes completed a wheelie assessment under single and dual-task conditions. Measures consisted of standardized biomechanical errors (e.g., front wheels touching ground, changing grip on wheel) as scored by a single clinician during eyes-open and eyes-closed positions. Assessments were repeated 7 ± 2 days and 45 ± 7 days later. Results: At baseline, there were no differences with dual-task exercise during eyes-open wheelie balancing (p = 0.096). No differences were observed from single to dual-task in the eyes-closed position (p = 0.154) at baseline, but there were significantly more errors during this position at both the 1-week (p = 0.005) and 45-day (p = 0.004) retest intervals. Fair to moderate correlations existed for both eyes-open and eyes-closed positions during single and dual task across 1-week (rs ≥ 0.49) and 45-day (rs ≥ 0.40) retest intervals. Conclusions: The incorporation of dual-task exercises during the eyes-closed wheelie position appears to increase the difficulty of balance compared to single-task, possibly making it a useful assessment to evaluate balance in para-athletes. There is fair to moderate correlation of the wheelie during single and dual tasks over time. Future research is needed on dual-task compensation post-injury. Full article

Background: Accurate assessment of athletes’ health status is essential for effective nutritional education and condition management. However, existing quality of life instruments do not adequately capture sport-specific health issues experienced by athletes. This study aimed to develop a subjective health status scale for collegiate athletes and examine its reliability and validity. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 432 collegiate athletes from two private universities in Tokyo, Japan. Six health-related items concerning gastrointestinal, skin, fatigue, and recovery conditions were developed based on semi-structured interviews with athletes and coaches. Exploratory factor analysis was performed to determine the factor structure, followed by assessments of internal consistency and associations with training satisfaction. Results: Two factors were identified: “Gastrointestinal/Skin condition” and “Fatigue Recovery/Reduction”. Both subscales demonstrated acceptable internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.76 for each) and were positively correlated with training satisfaction (r = 0.44–0.55, p < 0.001). Multiple regression analysis showed that both factors significantly predicted training satisfaction (adjusted R2 = 0.35, p < 0.001), with “Fatigue Recovery/Reduction” showing a stronger predictive effect (β = 0.45). Conclusions: The newly developed scale demonstrated satisfactory reliability and validity and may provide a practical, non-invasive tool for monitoring athlete health and evaluating nutritional education and condition management programs. Objective. This study examined suicidal ideation, preferred help-seeking sources, and knowledge of prevention strategies among collegiate athletes, and whether training influences stigma or knowledge. Methods. Collegiate athletes (N = 78), aged 18+ and participating in NCAA DI, DII, or DIII sports, were recruited via social media and email. Participants completed self-report measures on suicide, prevention training, and help-seeking. Results. A total of 39.7% reported lifetime suicidal ideation, yet only 35.8% had received suicide prevention training in college. Teammates (46.9%) and parents/guardians (40.7%) were the most commonly endorsed sources of support. Those who received training did not differ in stigma levels or knowledge of supportive actions compared to untrained peers. Conclusions. Collegiate athletes report high rates of suicidal ideation but limited access to effective prevention training. Moreover, current training may not improve stigma or knowledge. Efforts should focus on improving and expanding suicide prevention education within athletic programs. Full article

Background: This study explored the observations and experiences of athletic trainers (ATs) regarding food security constraints and drivers among collegiate student-athletes through the framework of the social determinants of health (SDOH). Methods: Seventeen ATs from nine public Mountain West Division I schools participated in one of six 90 min, virtual focus groups conducted in July–December 2023. A phenomenological design and constructivist theoretical framework were employed to analyze transcripts, compile themes, infer food security constraints and drivers, and map them to SDOH domains. Results: Emerging constraints and drivers mapped to seven of the eight SDOH domains (education, employment, health systems and services, housing, income and wealth, physical environment, and social environment); no themes related to the public safety domain. Conclusions: ATs identified a considerable number of food security constraints and drivers; however, based on the findings of other studies, their observations were not comprehensive. Incorporating the findings of those other studies, food security constraints and drivers exist across all eight SDOH domains. Four concepts spanned multiple domains: student-athlete normative expectations, nutrition/food security prioritization, financial disparities, and residing off campus. To ensure food security among collegiate student-athletes, AT perceptions suggest that structural changes facilitating the implementation of necessary food drivers may be warranted. Full article

Background/Objectives: Modifiable intrinsic factors such as foot posture, hallux mobility, dynamic balance, and body mass index (BMI) are widely assessed in athletic screening, but their reliability and interrelationships remain unclear. The aim of the study was to evaluate the reliability of foot posture, hallux mobility, dynamic balance, Q-angle, and navicular drop measures in collegiate athletes and to examine the relationships among these measures and BMI. The concurrent, discriminant, and predictive validity of the Foot Posture Index (FPI6) relative to the navicular drop test (NDT) was also assessed. Methods: Fifty-nine athletes participated: 10 in a reliability subsample and 49 in a separate validity subsample. Assessments included BMI, FPI-6, hallux valgus angle, hallux dorsiflexion, Y Balance Test (YBT), Q-angle, and NDT. Reliability was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs). Associations among measures and FPI6-NDT concurrent validity were examined using Spearman correlations and non-parametric group comparisons. Classification performance indices relative to NDT were calculated for FPI-6. Results: All measures demonstrated good to excellent reliability (ICC = 0.81–0.99). FPI-6 showed a strong concurrent association with NDT (rho = 0.735). More pronated foot posture was moderately associated with lower YBT performance and reduced hallux dorsiflexion (rho = −0.301 to −0.635). Higher BMI was associated with greater navicular drop and lower dynamic balance (rho = 0.301 to −0.433). FPI-6 showed high classification agreement with NDT-defined foot posture groups (specificity 96.9%; overall agreement 91.8%). Conclusions: Lower extremity alignment, hallux mobility, dynamic balance, and BMI showed modest interrelationships. FPI-6 demonstrated strong concurrent validity and high classification agreement relative to NDT, supporting practical screening use. Given the correlational nature of the findings, interpretations should remain cautious, and larger multimodal studies are warranted. Full article

Though it has been well established that a subset of collegiate student-athletes in the United States (U.S.) are not food secure, efficacious solutions for mitigating this issue appear to be elusive. This study identified system-level barriers and enablers to food security among student-athletes through the lens of collegiate athletic professionals (athletic directors, athletic trainers, sports dietitians, and strength and conditioning coaches). Using a phenomenological-informed design and constructivist theoretical framework, researchers explored the experiences and insights of participants (n = 27, Division I, northwestern U.S.) via six online focus groups July–December 2023. Categorical themes for barriers to food security were finances, culture, and competing priorities; enablers were on-campus supplemental food assistance, referrals to community services, and educational programming. A gap analysis was performed; existing solutions enabling food security and aspirational solutions for addressing food insecurity were compared, and gaps identified. Based on the insights of athletic professionals, a lack of student-athlete-centric solutions to ensure food security emerged. The introduction of shared revenue programs in American college sports may address some of food security barriers; however, additional funds may not mitigate the contribution of competing priorities and scheduling issues experienced by student-athletes. System-level changes are required to enable food security among this population. Full article

Mental fatigue is an increasingly important concern among collegiate athletes whose academic–athletic roles require sustained cognitive effort, emotional regulation, and recovery across overlapping performance contexts. This structured narrative review synthesizes behavioral science, sport psychology, and athlete mental health literature to clarify how perceived stress, competitive anxiety, and psychological resilience may interact in the development and regulation of mental fatigue among collegiate athletes. Rather than treating mental fatigue as simple tiredness or an isolated performance symptom, this review conceptualizes it as a cognitive–emotional and psychobiological outcome shaped by stress appraisal, attentional load, effort regulation, and resource depletion. The main contribution of this review is to integrate previously separate lines of research into a collegiate-athlete-focused behavioral science framework in which perceived stress is positioned as an upstream appraisal-based condition, competitive anxiety as a proximal emotional mechanism, and psychological resilience as a dynamic regulatory resource that may buffer fatigue-related vulnerability. Tennis and Chinese/non-Western collegiate sport contexts are used as illustrative applications rather than exclusive empirical targets, highlighting how individual accountability, academic–athletic role demands, cultural expectations, and support structures may shape fatigue processes. This review also distinguishes established empirical evidence from theoretical inference and identifies key gaps in measurement heterogeneity, methodological transparency, longitudinal evidence, and culturally diverse collegiate athlete research. By refining the stress–anxiety–fatigue pathway and identifying resilience, recovery, and contextual support as important regulatory factors, this review provides a conceptual foundation for future empirical testing and for more targeted behavioral interventions to support collegiate athlete well-being and performance sustainability. Mental toughness (MT) may contribute to within-athlete rowing performance variation, yet longitudinal evidence remains sparse. This pilot study examined within-athlete associations between MT and 2K ergometer performance across a competitive season in Division II female rowers. Twelve athletes (age 20.8 ± 2.1 years) completed the mental toughness index (MTI) before four standardized 2K time trials. Performance was modeled using a linear mixed-effects model with a random intercept for the athlete. The MTI was decomposed into within- and between-athlete components, with the timepoint as a categorical covariate. Small-sample inference used CR2 cluster-robust standard errors with Satterthwaite degrees of freedom. Performance improved mid-season relative to baseline (Timepoint 3: −7.29 s; 95% CI [−13.29, −1.29]; p = 0.023). The within-athlete MTI association was small and imprecise (β = −0.48 s/point; 95% CI [−1.56, 0.59]; p = 0.311), and the between-athlete MTI was unassociated with performance (β = 0.70; p = 0.667). Stable between-athlete differences dominated over variability (ICC = 0.946; R2m = 0.033; R2c = 0.948). The within-athlete MTI estimate was small and imprecise; given the wide compatibility interval, both the direction and magnitude of the association remain highly uncertain, and this inconclusive finding should not be interpreted as evidence of absence. Future studies with larger samples and key covariates (e.g., training load and illness/injury) are needed to confirm these preliminary estimates. Full article

Objectives: Skeletal muscle architecture (SMA) defines the mechanical limits of force production. However, its associations with force–time strategy under externally loaded conditions have received little research attention. This exploratory study examined associations between vastus lateralis (VL) and lateral gastrocnemius (LG) architecture and force–time strategy, jump-height retention, and stretch–shortening cycle (SSC) transfer-efficiency in collegiate basketball players. Methods: Seventeen collegiate male basketball players completed B-mode ultrasonographic assessment of VL and LG architecture, including muscle thickness, pennation angle (PA), and fascicle length. Athletes performed the squat jump (SJ), loaded squat jump (LSJ), countermovement jump (CMJ), and loaded countermovement jump (LCMJ) on force platforms, with a 20 kg external load applied for loaded conditions. Loaded retention, defined as the percentage of jump height preserved under load, was proposed as a unified construct. Pearson’s correlations were calculated, with Benjamini–Hochberg false discovery rate (FDR) corrections applied within predefined functional groups and pooled across morphology-sensitive correlations. Results: LG PA showed a large negative association with LCMJ rate of force development (r = −0.68 [−0.87, −0.30]) and a large positive association with LCMJ time to peak force (r = 0.68 [0.29, 0.87]), both surviving within-group FDR correction. VL PA was associated with eccentric acceleration time and concentric time across jump conditions (r = 0.52 to 0.61), interpreted as exploratory. Transfer-efficiency indices showed no significant associations with SMA, except for the LCMJ/LSJ concentric time ratio, which showed a moderate negative association with LG PA (r = −0.49 [−0.79, −0.01]). Conclusions: Resting muscle architecture was associated with the temporal and rate characteristics of force expression under load, rather than with the gross preservation of jump height. Integrating architectural assessment with loaded force–time profiling warrants further investigation as a means of characterizing individual force-development strategies. Full article

Patellofemoral pain (PFP) in athletes is associated with lower-limb kinetic-chain constraints, yet rehabilitation strategies targeting both hip and ankle mobility remain insufficiently examined. This assessor-blinded randomized controlled trial investigated the effects of a 6-week hip and ankle mobility-based rehabilitation program in male collegiate athletes with PFP. Forty-eight participants were assigned using computer-generated 1:1 randomization to an intervention group (n = 24) or a control group (n = 24). The intervention group completed supervised hip and ankle mobility rehabilitation three times weekly, whereas the control group maintained regular sport-specific training only. Co-primary outcomes were pain intensity assessed using a 10-cm visual analog scale (VAS) and knee-related function assessed using the Kujala score. Secondary outcomes included hip rotation range of motion, weight-bearing ankle dorsiflexion, vastus medialis–vastus lateralis (VM–VL) onset timing, Y-Balance Test (YBT) composite score, and countermovement jump (CMJ) height. Significant group × time interactions favored the intervention group for VAS (p < 0.0001; partial η2 = 0.436; change difference: −1.54 cm; 95% CI: −2.06 to −1.02) and Kujala score (p < 0.0001; partial η2 = 0.285; change difference: 8.00 points; 95% CI: 4.24 to 11.76). Significant interactions were also observed for hip internal and external rotation range of motion, weight-bearing ankle dorsiflexion, VM–VL onset timing during a controlled squat task, and YBT composite score (all p ≤ 0.0405; partial η2 = 0.088–0.374). No significant group × time interaction was observed for CMJ height (p = 0.0511; partial η2 = 0.080). These findings suggest that, compared with regular sport-specific training alone, adding a supervised hip and ankle mobility-based rehabilitation program may improve pain, knee-related function, targeted mobility outcomes, VM–VL onset timing during a controlled squat task, and dynamic balance in the short term. However, because the control group did not receive an active or attention-matched intervention, these findings should be interpreted as the added effect of the supervised rehabilitation program rather than as definitive evidence of mobility-specific treatment effects. In addition, because patellar tracking, knee kinematics, joint kinetics, and patellofemoral joint loading were not directly measured, the findings should be interpreted as clinical and functional outcome changes rather than direct evidence of a confirmed biomechanical mechanism. Background: High-level badminton performance requires rapid perceptual processing, visuomotor coordination, and precise movement responses under continuously changing spatial conditions. Although wearable sports vision interventions have shown potential for enhancing perceptual–motor performance, evidence regarding their longitudinal effects and transfer to sport-specific outcomes remains limited. Trial design: A single-center, exploratory randomized controlled trial using a parallel-group structure. Simple randomization without blocking or stratification resulted in a final allocation ratio of 16:10 (approximately 1.6:1) between the training and control groups. Methods: Twenty-six collegiate badminton athletes aged 18–25 were randomized into a wearable sports vision training group (n = 16) or a control group (n = 10). The intervention group completed wearable sports vision training using Automatic Dual Rotational Risley Prisms (ADRRPs) for 15 min twice weekly over 4 weeks. Results: Baseline-adjusted ANCOVA demonstrated significant between-group effects for reaction time (p = 0.003) and target-zone accurate hits (p = 0.004), whereas binocular visual function outcomes did not show statistically significant between-group differences. No adverse events were reported. Conclusions: Four weeks of wearable sports vision training may be associated with improvements in selected visuomotor outcomes, particularly reaction performance and target-zone hitting accuracy, in collegiate badminton players. Background/Objectives: Baseball pitching injuries associated with fatigue-induced mechanisms may be attributed to change in lower-body power. In this study, a stretch-resistant belt (theorized to increase intra-abdominal pressure) was studied to determine if it influenced countermovement jump (CMJ) power pre- and post-pitching. Methods: Thirteen college athletes participated in three separate, randomized pitching sessions of forty pitches to evaluate the CMJ performance impacts owed to wearing a team-issued baseball belt versus a belt that was configured with the intent to raise intra-abdominal pressure (IAP). The three belt conditions were; (1) the team-issued belt, standard belt (SB), (2) the IAP-configured belt worn at regular length (RIAP), and the IAP-configured belt fastened two inches with the tightest cinch (2IN). Maximum jump heights were measured on a Jumpmat and captured with hands on hips. Data was integrated to compute jump power and the eccentric utilization ratio, being the ratio of a full stretch CMJ to a static CMJ biased to concentric power. Static CMJ testing had pitchers hold the bottom position for 5 s before takeoff. Repeated measures ANOVA with a post hoc Bonferroni correction determined significant differences; subject-specific interactions were identified. Results: Most athletes maintained or improved performance post-pitching with the RIAP with less variability in coordinating stretch-shortening responses. On a group level, RIAP had greater post-pitching CMJ height and power versus 2IN (p < 0.03) and had less CMJ power loss compared to SB and 2IN belt conditions (p < 0.02). IAP was not directly measured, yet this exploratory study provides preliminary evidence that a 5 mm, theoretical IAP design, via a stretch-resistant belt can influence pre- and post-pitching lower-body neuromuscular performance in collegiate pitchers. Conclusions: The RIAP condition showed less performance decline inferring fatigue resistance, preserved max CMJ height, and lessened post-pitch CMJ power loss. Maximal cinching tended to compromise post-pitch lower-body power and inferred the need to individualize the stretch-resistant belt, designed to increase intra-abdominal pressure, for performance and injury protection benefits. Sport Satisfaction and Psychological Well-Being in Collegiate Athletes: The Role of Upbringing, Athletic Status, and Adaptive Psychological Attributes

Athletes face a variety of pressures related to their sport participation, and these demands can contribute to persistent mental health challenges. The aim of this study was to examine the role of grit, growth mindset, emotion regulation, self-compassion, and psychological well-being in collegiate athletes’ sport satisfaction. Participants (N = 263) were recruited through CloudResearch and outreach emails to athletic programs. The sample included individuals from 43 U.S. states and represented rural, suburban, and urban communities. Among the 30 sports represented, basketball, football, and soccer had the highest participation. Results indicated significant differences in sport satisfaction (p = 0.007, η2 = 0.04) and growth mindset (p = 0.017, η2 = 0.03) across communities of upbringing, as well as differences in sport satisfaction across years in college (p = 0.008, η2 = 0.06). Scholarship status was associated with significant differences in sport satisfaction (p < 0.001, d = 0.85) and expressive suppression (p = 0.019, d = 0.31). Cognitive reappraisal (r = 0.427) demonstrated the strongest association with psychological well-being, whereas growth mindset (r = 0.501) showed the strongest association with sport satisfaction. Additionally, a significant interaction effect emerged between growth mindset and psychological well-being (p = 0.033, ΔR2 = 0.01) in predicting sport satisfaction. These findings highlight the importance of supporting student-athletes in effectively regulating their emotions and maintaining a belief in their capacity for growth, as both factors appear critical for promoting psychological well-being and enhancing satisfaction with the athletic experience. Introductory Java programming requires learners to reason about abstract computational concepts such as program state, control flow, and execution order, which often present substantial difficulties for novice programmers. These challenges may be further intensified for collegiate student athletes when programming instruction remains disconnected from the domain knowledge that shapes their prior experiences. This paper proposes a wrestling-inspired, state-based pedagogical framework that leverages the rule system of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) wrestling as an analogical knowledge domain for introducing foundational Java programming concepts. Within this framework, wrestling match states and scoring actions are systematically mapped to core programming constructs, which include variable assignment, conditional branching, loops, method invocation, and program termination. This paper is positioned as a conceptual and pedagogical framework study rather than an empirical intervention study. It focuses on the theoretical rationale, conceptual alignment, instructional mappings, and classroom implementation possibilities of a wrestling-inspired approach. This paper does not report participant data, learning assessments, or comparative outcome measures. Instead, it illustrates how sport-specific mental models can be transformed into structured instructional representations that may support learners’ reasoning about program execution. By integrating domain-aligned cognitive schemas with programming instruction, the proposed framework offers a structured knowledge scaffolding approach that is designed to support novice understanding of computational processes in introductory programming education. Background: Sleep hygiene protocols (SHPs) have been shown to improve sleep and stress regulation; however, the role of cortisol in shaping downstream physiological and performance adaptations remains unclear. This study primarily examined the effects of a short-term SHP on sleep duration and salivary cortisol responses across resting, pre-exercise, and post-exercise states in female collegiate soccer players and, secondarily, whether cortisol statistically mediated selected aerobic and anaerobic performance outcomes. Methods: Fourteen players (22.1 ± 3.3 y; 157.8 ± 6.0 cm; 53.5 ± 3.9 kg) completed a randomised, counterbalanced crossover study comparing habitual sleep (no sleep hygiene protocol; nSHP) with a comprehensive SHP incorporating environmental, behavioural, and educational strategies. Salivary cortisol was sampled one hour post-waking and 30 min pre- and 15 min post-exercise during standardised testing sessions. Performance outcomes included vertical jump, sprint performance (40 m and repeated sprints [RAST]), and the Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test Level 1. Linear mixed-effects models assessed cortisol responses, and mediation analyses explored cortisol–performance relationships. Results: After SHP, perceived (7.87 h vs. 6.5 h; p = 0.002, ESg = 1.0) and calculated sleep duration (8.5 h vs. 6.9 h; p = 0.004, ESg = 0.95) increased significantly. Cortisol was markedly lower following SHP at selected timepoints, including before RAST (−43.05%, p = 0.006, ESg = 0.84), with additional timepoint-specific, condition-dependent differences post-anaerobic and post-aerobic exercise (Δ = 7.37 and 5.98 nmol·L−1, respectively; p < 0.001). Vertical jump height demonstrated significant total (9.92 cm, p = 0.002) and direct effects (7.72 cm, p = 0.034), and peak repeated-sprint performance showed a significant direct effect (p = 0.026). Cortisol did not significantly mediate any performance outcomes (ACME p > 0.05). Conclusions: Short-term sleep hygiene is associated with increased sleep duration, timepoint-specific modulation of cortisol responses, and selected anaerobic performance benefits; however, these effects were not explained by measured cortisol responses and are unlikely to be sustained without ongoing reinforcement or support, particularly in athletic populations.
