The purpose of this work was to test a new setup to pump water with entrained air for application in gas fermentation. A mixed flow, where gas is contained in a liquid to be pumped, rapidly reduces the efficiency of a conventional pump, due to the compressibility of the gas. It is not always possible to degas the fluid, for instance in gas fermentation, which is preferably carried out in tubular reactors (loop fermenters) to achieve a high conversion rate of the gaseous feedstocks. Method: In this work, a rim-driven thruster (RDT) was tested in a lab-scale, cold flow model of a loop reactor with 5–30% (by volume) of gas fraction (air) in the liquid (water) as alternative propulsion element (6 m total pipe length, ambient temperature and pressure). As a result, it was found that the RDT, in connection with a guiding vane providing swirling motion to the two-phase fluid, could pump a mixed flow with up to 25.7% of gas content (by volume) at atmospheric pressure and 25 °C and 0.5 to 2 m/s flow speed. In conclusion, an RDT is advantageous over a classic propulsion element like a centrifugal pump or axial flow pump for transporting liquids with entrained gases. This article describes the potential of rim-driven thrusters, as known from marine propulsion, in biotechnology, the chemical industry, and beyond, to handle multiphase flows. Full article

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set targets to reduce carbon emissions from shipping by 40% by 2030 (IMO2030) and 70% by 2040 (IMO2050). Within the framework of decarbonising the shipping industry, liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel and carbon capture technologies are envisioned as a transitional option toward a pathway for clean energy fuels. The aim of the complex experimental and computational studies performed was to evaluate the CO2 capture potential through the utilisation of LNG cold potential on the FSR-type vessel within a dual-fuel propulsion system. Based on the experimental studies focused on actual FSRU-type vessel performance, the energy efficiency indicators of the heat exchanging machinery were determined to fluctuate at a 0.78–0.99 ratio. The data obtained were used to perform an algorithm-based systematic comparison of energy balances between LNG regasification and fuel combustion cycles on an FSRU-type vessel. In the due course of research, it was determined that LNG fuel combustion requires 18,254 kJ/kg energy to separate and capture CO2 in the liquid phase to form exhaust gas; meanwhile, low sulfur marine diesel oil (LSMDO) requires 13,889 kJ/kg of energy. According to the performed calculations, the regasification of 1 kg LNG requires 1018 kJ/kg energy, achieving a cryogenic carbon capture ratio of 5–6% using LNG as a fuel and 7–8% using LSMDO as a fuel. The field of carbon capture in the maritime industry is currently in its pioneering stage, and the results achieved through research establish an informative foundation that is crucial for the constructive development and practical implementation of cryogenic carbon capture technology on dual-fuel ships. The needle valve, serving as the flow control unit of the thruster system, is a crucial component of the entire thruster. Its performance directly impacts the flow state of the rarefied gas in the micro-nozzle structure of the cold gas micro-thruster, thereby exerting a significant influence on the high precision and stability of the propulsion system as a whole. This study examines the impact of different needle valve structures on the flow and thrust in micro-nozzles using the DSMC method. The analysis includes discussions on the spatial distribution, Kn distribution, slip velocity distribution, and pressure distribution of the micro-nozzle’s flow mechanism. Notably, increased curvature of the needle valve enhances the flow velocity in the throat and expansion section. The magnitude of the curvature directly affects the flow velocity, with larger curvatures resulting in higher velocities. Comparing different spool shapes, the conical spool shape minimizes the velocity gradient in the high-speed region at the junction between the spool area and the outlet pipe, particularly with a wide opening. Increasing the curvature of the spool leads to a higher velocity in the expansion section. Consequently, an arc-shaped spool valve maximizes the nitrogen flow at the nozzle during wide openings, thereby enhancing thrust. These research findings serve as a valuable reference for the structural design of the needle valve in the micro-nozzle of the cold gas micro-thruster. Full article

Nanosatellites have established their importance in low-Earth orbit (LEO), and it is common for student teams to build them for educational and technology demonstration purposes. The next challenge is the technology maturity for deep-space missions. The LEO serves as a relevant environment for maturing the spacecraft design. Here we present the ESTCube-2 mission, which will be launched onboard VEGA-C VV23. The satellite was developed as a technology demonstrator for the future deep-space mission by the Estonian Student Satellite Program. The ultimate vision of the program is to use the electric solar wind sail (E-sail) technology in an interplanetary environment to traverse the solar system using lightweight propulsion means. Additional experiments were added to demonstrate all necessary technologies to use the E-sail payload onboard ESTCube-3, the next nanospacecraft targeting the lunar orbit. The E-sail demonstration requires a high-angular velocity spin-up to deploy a tether, resulting in a need for a custom satellite bus. In addition, the satellite includes deep-space prototypes: deployable structures; compact avionics stack electronics (including side panels); star tracker; reaction wheels; and cold–gas propulsion. During the development, two additional payloads were added to the design of ESTCube-2, one for Earth observation of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index and the other for corrosion testing in the space of thin-film materials. The ESTCube-2 satellite has been finished and tested in time for delivery to the launcher. Eventually, the project proved highly complex, making the team lower its ambitions and optimize the development of electronics, software, and mechanical structure. The ESTCube-2 team dealt with budgetary constraints, student management problems during a pandemic, and issues in the documentation approach. Beyond management techniques, the project required leadership that kept the team aware of the big picture and willing to finish a complex satellite platform. The paper discusses the ESTCube-2 design and its development, highlights the team’s main technical, management, and leadership issues, and presents suggestions for nanosatellite and nanospacecraft developers. The cold gas micro-propulsion system can provide low noise and ultra-high accuracy thrust for satellite platforms for space gravitational wave detection, high-precision earth gravity field measurement. In this study, the effect of different needle valve opening ratios on the rarefied flow characteristics of a micro-nozzle in a cold gas micro-propulsion system was investigated based on DSMC method. The special feature of the currently studied micro-nozzle is that it has a section of micro-channel with a large length–diameter ratio up to 4.5. Due to the extremely small needle valve displacement of the nozzle (minimum needle valve displacement up to 1.7 μm), a finely structured mesh was used. The molecular particle and macro flow characteristics inside the micro-nozzle were calculated for the conditions of a needle valve opening ratio from 5% to 98%. The throttling effect of the throat has a significant effect on the rarefied flow in the micro-nozzle; especially under the tiny opening, this effect is more significant. The spatial distribution of continuous flow, transition flow, and free molecular flow in the micro-nozzle varies at different needle valve opening ratios. As the needle valve opening ratio increases, the continuous flow will gradually fill the microfluidic region. Full article

In this study, we first considered the influence of micro-nozzle wall roughness structure on molecular collision and reflection behavior and established a modified CLL model. The DSMC method was used to simulate and analyze the flow of the micro-nozzle in the cold gas micro-propulsion system, and the deviation of simulation results before and after the improvement of CLL model were compared. Then, the rarefied flow characteristics under a small needle valve opening (less than 1%) were focused on the research, and the particle position, molecular number density, and spatial distribution of internal energy in the micro-nozzle were calculated. The spatial distributions of the flow mechanism in the micro-nozzle under different needle valve openings were compared and analyzed. It was found that when the needle valve opening is lower than 1%, the slip flow and transition flow regions move significantly upstream of the nozzle, the free molecular flow distribution region expands significantly, and the relationship between thrust force and needle valve opening is obviously different from that of medium and large needle valve openings. The effect of nitrogen temperature on the rarefied flow and thrust force is also discussed in this research. The numerical results showed that as gas temperature increases, the molecular internal energy, momentum, and molecular number density near the nozzle exit are enhanced. The thrust at small needle valve openings was significantly affected by the temperature of the working mass. The results of this study will provide key data for the design and development of cold gas micro-thrusters. Full article

Cold spray additive manufacturing (CSAM) shows great potential in titanium-alloy production as it is a solid-state process. However, data published so far have demonstrated the difficulty of producing dense and high-strength Ti alloy parts. Our previous studies have shown that nozzle design together with high-cost helium propulsive gas plays a crucial role in particle acceleration. In this work, special nozzles for Ti alloy were designed and validated experimentally with commercially available Ti6Al4V powder. Simulation results show that particle impact temperature increases remarkably for a long convergent length, while particle kinetic energy slightly increases, which is validated by experiments. The relationship between the particle impact temperature and practice diameter shows the first increase and then decrease. The experimental results show that as the nozzle convergent section becomes longer, the edges of the single-pass deposits become smoother, and the width, density, deposition efficiency, and microhardness of the single-pass deposits increase. This paper presents the development, construction and testing of a new type of solar–thermal propulsion system which can be used for low earth orbit (LEO) satellites. Currently, the vast majority of LEO satellites are fitted with a cold gas propulsion system. Although such a propulsion system is preferred, the service duration of an LEO satellite is limited by the amount of cold gas they carry onboard. In the case of the new type of solar–thermal propulsion system proposed in this paper, the cold gas is first transferred from the main tank in a cylindrical service tank/buffer tank which is placed in the focal line of a concave mirror. After the gas is heated by the solar light focused on the service tank by the concave mirror, it expands by opening the appropriate solenoid valve for the satellite’s attitude control. In this way the service duration of LEO satellite on orbit can increase by 2.5 times compared with a classic cold gas propulsion system. This is due to the propellant’s internal energy increase by the focused solar light. This paper also presents the results achieved by carrying out tests for the hot gas propulsion system in a controlled environment. Full article

Nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP) is regarded as the preferred option for the upcoming crewed interstellar exploration due to its excellent performance compared to the current most advanced chemical propulsion systems. Over the past several decades, many novel concepts have been proposed, among which the particle bed reactor (PBR) is the most efficient, compact, and lightweight method. Its unique features, such as the extremely high power density and the radial flow path of coolant in the fuel region, introduce many challengeable issues to the thermal hydraulic design of PBR, with the flow distribution being representative. In this work, the flow distribution process within the core is analyzed based on the understanding of the axial pressure profile in a dummy PBR. A “flow shift” phenomenon leading to the hot spot in the core is introduced first, and three methods, i.e., decreasing the pressure drop within the hot gas channel, increasing the flow resistance on the cold frit or hot frit, and changing the flow pattern from “Z” to “U”, are proposed to reduce the “flow shift” and the consequent temperature mal-distribution. The pros and cons of using cold frit or hot frit to distribute the coolant are also discussed. Finally, by using three numerical examples, these analyses are demonstrated. The findings here may provide technical support for PBR design. Full article

Adelis-SAMSON is a nano-satellite mission aimed at performing geo-location of target signals on Earth using a tight three-satellite formation in space. To maintain formation, each nano-satellite is equipped with a cold gas propulsion system. The design, qualification, and integration of the Adelis-SAMSON nano-satellite propulsion system is presented in this paper. The cold gas propulsion system mass is approximately 2 kg, takes a volume of 2U, and generates a thrust of 80 mN from four thrusters using krypton as a propellant. We first present the propulsion system requirements and corresponding system configuration conceived to meet the mission requirements. Subsequently, we present the system architecture while listing all the components. We overview the particular role and qualification process of four of the propulsion system’s components: the propellant tank, thruster assembly, pressure regulators, and fill and vent valve. We detail the tests performed on each component, such as proof pressure tests, vibration tests, and external leak tests. Finally, we present the propulsion system level tests before delivery for satellite integration and discuss the propulsion system’s concept of operations. Full article

CubeSats provide a cost effective means to perform scientific and technological studies in space. Due to their affordability, CubeSat technologies have been diversely studied and developed by educational institutions, companies and space organizations all over the world. The CubeSat technology that is surveyed in this paper is the propulsion system. A propulsion system is the primary mobility device of a spacecraft and helps with orbit modifications and attitude control. This paper provides an overview of micro-propulsion technologies that have been developed or are currently being developed for CubeSats. Some of the micro-propulsion technologies listed have also flown as secondary propulsion systems on larger spacecraft. Operating principles and key design considerations for each class of propulsion system are outlined. Finally, the performance factors of micro-propulsion systems have been summarized in terms of: first, a comparison of thrust and specific impulse for all propulsion systems; second, a comparison of power and specific impulse, as also thrust-to-power ratio and specific impulse for electric propulsion systems.
