The limited self-starting capability of H-type Darrieus Vertical-Axis Wind Turbines (VAWT) remains one of the main obstacles to their deployment in low-power and urban applications, where wind conditions are typically weak and intermittent. Although several passive geometric modification strategies have been proposed to enhance initial torque generation, most available studies rely predominantly on numerical simulations, with limited systematic experimental validation under low tip-speed ratio (TSR) conditions. In this work, the influence of passive blade modifications on self-starting performance is assessed through a combined numerical–experimental approach. An integrated numerical–experimental framework was used to systematically compare passive blade configurations under equivalent low-wind conditions. Two modified configurations, a biomimetic profile incorporating passive trailing-edge devices and an asymmetric J-type geometry, were optimized using transient CFD simulations of the first rotation cycle and a Design of Experiments (DOE) framework. Additively manufactured full-rotor test blades were then manufactured via additive manufacturing and tested in a controlled wind tunnel at 3.0 m/s and 2.25 m/s. Start-up time, azimuthal robustness, tip-speed-ratio evolution, and static start-up torque (interpreted through its corresponding torque coefficient) were measured and compared against a baseline NACA0018 profile. The biomimetic configuration consistently produced higher start-up torque and shorter acceleration times, achieving self-starting in 66.7% of the evaluated azimuthal positions at 2.25 m/s, compared to 22.2% for the baseline profile. Within the investigated operating range, this configuration emerged as the most robust passive strategy. The agreement between CFD predictions and experimental measurements supports the use of first-cycle maximum torque as a representative indicator of self-starting performance. These findings highlight the comparative value of first-cycle maximum torque as a practical metric for passive self-starting design assessment in low-TSR Darrieus turbines. These findings provide direct experimental evidence to guide the rational design of Darrieus turbines intended for marginal wind conditions. Full article

To reduce measurement uncertainty on time samples, BTT systems require measurement probes to meet high dynamic performance requirements. Anisotropic magnetoresistive (AMR) sensors have recently gained interest for this application owing to their high sensitivity to magnetic flux variations and robustness in harsh, contaminated environments. However, a thorough dynamic characterization of AMR-based BTT probes remains largely unexplored, representing a critical gap in next-generation industrial measurement systems. This work presents a custom-designed signal conditioning circuit tailored for AMR-based BTT measurements, alongside a systematic methodology for characterizing its dynamic performance. The circuit is modeled as a block diagram, from which transfer functions are derived analytically and validated experimentally, providing a rigorous and reproducible framework for probe dynamic assessment. The complete instrumentation chain is then tested on a low-speed rotor test bench in a BTT configuration. Results reveal a fundamental sensitivity–bandwidth trade-off: satisfying the cutoff frequency requirement imposed by BTT applications inherently reduces signal gain below the threshold needed to resolve individual blade-passage events. This finding isolates the key design bottleneck for AMR-based BTT probes and provides quantitative guidance for future optimization of both sensor and circuit design toward industrial tip-timing deployment. Blade Tip Timing (BTT) provides a superior long-term blade monitoring solution compared to strain gauges, yet its adoption in lower value turbomachinery remains constrained by sensor costs. This study explores Inductive Proximity (IP) probes as a cost-effective alternative to eddy current probes. Experimental results demonstrate that the IP probes achieve comparable accuracy in natural frequency estimation while being 40 times more affordable than traditional active eddy current probes. Additionally, IP probes maintain robustness, ensuring reliable vibration parameter extraction via open-source BTT software (version 0.17.0). These findings significantly enhance the accessibility of BTT, enabling budget-conscious turbomachine manufacturers to implement high-precision blade monitoring solutions across a wider range of applications. This study presents a two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics analysis of a vertical-axis Savonius-type wind turbine under atmospheric conditions representative of an educational environment located in the Ecuadorian Andean region. Unlike previous studies conducted under sea-level meteorological conditions, this research is performed under high-altitude conditions (2723 m a.s.l.). The unsteady flow around the rotor was simulated using a two-dimensional approach based on the Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) equations, discretized with the finite volume method and coupled with the k–ω Shear Stress Transport (SST) turbulence model. The rotor rotation was modeled using sliding mesh technique, employing a second-order implicit time scheme to ensure numerical stability and adequate temporal resolution. The numerical model was configured for a tip speed ratio of 0.8 and a wind speed of 3.9 m/s. The time step was defined based on a constant angular advancement of the rotor per time iteration, ensuring numerical stability and adequate temporal resolution. The aerodynamic torque was obtained by integrating the pressure and viscous forces acting on the blades, allowing the calculation of the mechanical power generated and the power coefficient. The results showed a periodic and stable torque behavior after the initial transient cycles, yielding an average torque of 0.7687 N·m and a mechanical power of 5.17 W, while the power coefficient reached a value of 0.2102. Analysis of the flow fields revealed the formation of a low-velocity wake downstream of the rotor, regions of high turbulent kinetic energy associated with periodic vortex shedding, and a significant pressure difference between the advancing and returning blades, confirming that turbine operation is dominated by drag forces. The numerical results were validated through comparison with previous studies, showing good agreement and demonstrating the reliability of the proposed Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) approach. This study highlights the potential of Savonius turbines for low-power applications in urban and educational environments, as well as the usefulness of CFD as a tool for evaluating and optimizing their aerodynamic performance. The increasing scale and structural flexibility of modern wind turbine rotors have made real-time monitoring and active control of blade tip deflection a critical requirement for ensuring operational safety, particularly regarding blade-tower clearance. Since direct measurement through physical sensors is often impractical due to high costs, installation difficulties and maintenance challenges, this work proposes a data-based framework for out-of-plane blade tip deflection estimation. The approach introduces a systematic and hierarchical input selection framework that evaluates sensor signal groups, ranging from standard SCADA measurements to configurations including auxiliary nacelle/tower sensors and dedicated blade-root instrumentation. By combining Spearman correlation and spectral coherence, the proposed framework ensures consistent representation of key turbine dynamics across all operating regions. This framework provides a structured trade-off between implementation feasibility and estimation fidelity, enabling tailored solutions for applications such as structural health monitoring and safety-critical active control. Compact Feedforward Neural Network (FNN) and Time-Delay Neural Network (TDNN) architectures, whose hyperparameters are optimized via Bayesian optimization, are employed to achieve high estimation accuracy while preserving computational efficiency. Evaluated through high-fidelity aeroelastic simulations of the NREL 5 MW turbine using the industry-standard FAST (Fatigue, Aerodynamics, Structures, and Turbulence) tool across all operating conditions, the approach achieves R2=0.894 using SCADA-only inputs, R2=0.973 when augmented with nacelle and tower-top sensors and a peak fidelity of R2=0.989 using blade-root bending moment data. These results demonstrate that high-fidelity virtual sensing is attainable without blade instrumentation, providing a viable pathway for real-time tip clearance monitoring and fatigue mitigation. This directly enhances the operational resilience of wind energy systems and their contribution to the stability of renewable-dominated power grids. Full article

Leading-edge erosion of wind turbine blades caused by repeated raindrop impingement can significantly reduce power output and increase maintenance costs. This study develops a rain erosion atlas for Japan over 11 years from 2006 to 2016 based on the CRIEPI-RCM-Era2 dataset. The NREL 5 MW, DTU 10 MW, and IEA 15 MW wind turbines were employed to evaluate the incubation time (erosion onset time) of commercial polyurethane-based coating at the blade tip. Erosion progression was simulated using an empirical damage model that relates raindrop impingement and impact velocity to the incubation time. The rain erosion atlas reveals a clear correlation between wind turbine size and erosion risk: the NREL 5MW turbine shows an incubation time of 3–12 years, the DTU 10MW turbine 1–4 years, and the IEA 15MW turbine 0.5–2 years. Shorter incubation times are observed on the Pacific Ocean side, where annual precipitation is higher than on the Sea of Japan side. Additionally, the influence of coating degradation due to ultraviolet radiation was assessed using solar radiation data, revealing a further reduction in incubation time on the Pacific Ocean side. Finally, the potential of erosion-safe mode operation was examined, demonstrating its effectiveness in alleviating erosion progression. Full article

Background: The piezoelectric saw is a technology used in osteotomies, providing precise and minimally invasive cuts, especially in areas close to vital structures. Despite its advantages, limitations such as prolonged surgical time and restrictions in use for larger bones have motivated the development of ultrasonic tips with more efficient geometries. Methods: A laboratory trial was conducted with 40 ultrasonic tips (n = 40), divided into 2 groups: the test group (n = 20), with an ultrasonic tip featuring a multidirectional angular cutting-tooth geometry, and the control (n = 20), with a straight-tooth ultrasonic tip. Two operators performed standardized osteotomies on synthetic bone blocks, with monitoring of variables including cutting time (in seconds), maximum block and blade temperature (in °C), and bone mass loss (in grams). Sample randomization was block-based, and blade coding ensured operator and evaluator blinding. Results: The results showed a statistically significant reduction of approximately 26% in cutting time with the multidirectional ultrasonic tips (Test = 52.85 s; Control = 71.55 s; p < 0.001), regardless of the operator. No significant differences were observed between groups regarding maximum bone temperature (Test = 30.45 °C; Control = 29.40 °C; p = 0.337), blade temperature variation (Test = 5.30 °C; Control = 4.10 °C; p = 0.337), overall temperature variation (Test = −0.19 °C; Control = 0.06 °C; p = 0.285), or bone mass loss (Test = 0.1355 g; Control = 0.0350 g; p = 0.387). A significant interaction between operator and blade type in some variables, such as bone temperature variation (p = 0.001), reinforces the influence of technical experience on the results. Conclusions: The multidirectional angular geometry of the ultrasonic tip significantly improves cutting efficiency without compromising thermal safety, representing a promising advancement for optimizing osteotomies in surgical settings. The use of this new geometry may enhance productivity, particularly in complex procedures, and deserves future clinical investigation to expand its applicability across different surgical specialties, including orthopedics. This study presents the first computational investigation of hybrid propeller configurations that combine toroidal and conventional blade geometries. Using Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (DDES) with the Shear Stress Transport (SST) kω model for flow analysis and the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings (FW–H) formulation for aeroacoustic prediction, five hybrid propeller designs were evaluated: a baseline model and four variants with modified loop-element spacing. The results show that the V-Gap-S configuration achieves the highest figure of merit (FM), producing over 10% improvement in propeller performance relative to the baseline, while also exhibiting the lowest turbulence kinetic energy (TKE) levels across multiple radial planes. Aeroacoustic analysis reveals quadrupole-like directivity for primary tonal noise, primarily driven by blade tip–vortex interactions, with primary tonal noise strongly correlated with thrust. Broadband noise and overall sound pressure level (OASPL) exhibited dipole-like patterns, influenced by propeller torque and FM, respectively. Comparisons of surface pressure, vorticity, and time derivatives of acoustic pressure further elucidate the mechanisms linking blade spacing to aerodynamic loading and noise generation. The results demonstrate that aerodynamic performance and aeroacoustics are strongly coupled and that meaningful noise reduction claims require performance conditions to be matched. Full article

Vertical axial-flow pumps with bidirectional passages are widely used in applications requiring flow reversal. However, their unique inlet geometry often leads to asymmetric impeller inflow conditions. This study investigates the internal flow behavior and pressure pulsation characteristics of a vertical bidirectional axial-flow pump under design, critical stall, and deep stall conditions using unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes simulations combined with Fast Fourier Transform and wavelet analysis. Results show that the pump reaches peak efficiency at the design point, with critical and deep stall occurring at 0.6 Qdes and 0.5 Qdes, respectively. The head at the deep stall condition shows a further drop of 7.51% compared to the critical stall condition. This progressive performance degradation is attributed to vortex-induced blockage: it initiates with the intensification of the tip leakage vortex and evolves into large-scale separation vortices covering the suction surface under deep stall—a mechanism distinctly influenced by the bidirectional inlet’s stagnant water zone. Inlet asymmetry, reflected by a normalized velocity coefficient (Vn) below 0.6 in the stagnant water zone under design flow, is partially mitigated during stall due to flow confinement. Pressure pulsations at the blade leading edge are dominated by the blade passing frequency (BPF), with amplitudes under critical stall about 3.2 times those at design conditions. At the impeller outlet, critical stall produces a mixed dominant frequency (shaft frequency and BPF), whereas deep stall yields the highest pulsation amplitude (BPF ≈ 4.8 × the design value) resulting from extreme passage blockage. These findings clarify how bidirectional-inlet-induced vortices modulate stall progression and provide theoretical guidance for enhancing the operational stability of such pumps under off-design conditions. This paper presents a numerical study of fluid–structure interaction (FSI) applied to wind turbines, combining computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element analysis (FEA). The study focuses on a 3D wind turbine blade inspired by the GE 1.5XLE model. The blade features a twisted geometry with S818, S825, and S826 aerodynamic profiles, and is made of an orthotropic composite material with variable thickness and an internal spar. The fluid domain is defined by two circular sections upstream and downstream, aligned along the Z-axis. Simulations are performed under a wind speed of 12 m/s and a rotational speed of −2.22 rad/s (Tip Speed Ratio (TSR) = 8), with air modeled as an incompressible fluid at ambient temperature. On the CFD side, a periodic and symmetric modeling approach is applied, reducing the fluid domain to one-third of the full configuration by simulating flow around a single blade and extrapolating results to the remaining ones. This method achieves a 47% reduction in computation time while maintaining high accuracy in aerodynamic results. On the FEA side, spar condensation is performed by creating a superelement using the substructuring method. This strategy reduces structural computation time by 45% while preserving reliable predictions of displacements, stresses, and natural frequencies. These results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed techniques for accurate and computationally efficient aeroelastic simulations. Full article

Background/Objectives: Cement augmentation of cephalomedullary head elements can improve the purchase of osteoporotic bone; however, it does not eliminate the need for accurate implant positioning or the preservation of sliding. We report the case of an 87-year-old woman who underwent intramedullary nailing with a cement-augmented helical blade for intertrochanteric fracture. Methods: This is a single-patient case report. Calibrated radiographic measurements—tip–apex distance (TAD), calcar-referenced TAD (CalTAD), neck–shaft angle (NSA), and telescoping—were obtained immediately postoperatively and at 4, 7, 12, and 15 months. CT was performed at postoperative week 1 and at failure, and MRI was performed for clinical deterioration. In addition, a targeted narrative review summarizes the evidence on the head-element position, sliding behavior, reduction alignment, and augmentation. Results: Immediate postoperative indices were within the accepted targets: TAD 22.6 mm, CalTAD 22.8 mm, NSA 134°, with the head element inferior on the anteroposterior view and central on the lateral view. Rehabilitation proceeded with full weight bearing as tolerated. Early telescoping was minimal (3.8–3.9 mm). Between 7 and 15 months, progressive varus with shortening of TAD/CalTAD and little additional telescoping was observed, radiographically consistent with relative proximal migration of the head–cement complex and a cleavage plane along the inferior cement mantle, culminating in a subcapital femoral neck fracture with the implant in situ. Emphasis should be placed on accurate implant positioning and preservation of sliding capacity, because cement augmentation alone may not prevent mechanical failure when the implant position or load transfer is suboptimal. Conclusions: Cement augmentation stiffens the interface and reduces micromotion but does not neutralize malposition-induced stresses. Accurate positioning, preservation of sliding, and timely conversion when sliding fails to progress are advisable; these findings are hypothesis-generating from a single case. We propose a position- and sliding-based decision guide to support clinical decision-making; its usefulness remains to be validated in larger studies. Full article

The growing demand for renewable energy has amplified the need for efficient and reliable wind turbine technologies, where understanding aerodynamic performance and aeroelastic behavior plays a critical role. In this study, a high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed to analyze the aerodynamic loads and structural responses of a 2 kW horizontal-axis wind turbine, while an artificial neural network (ANN) was trained using CFD-generated data to predict power output and aeroelastic characteristics. The work combines ANN predictions and CFD simulations to determine the feasibility of machine learning as a surrogate model, which is much less expensive in terms of computational costs and time, with no negative effects on the accuracy. Findings indicate ANN predictions are closely comparable to CFD results with under 5–7% deviation at optimal blade pitch angles, which was shown to be very reliable in capturing nonlinear aerodynamic trends at different wind speeds and blade pitch angles. In addition, the obtained result emphasizes the example of the trade-off between aerodynamic efficiency and structural safety, where the largest power coefficient (0.42) was achieved at 0° pitch and the tip deflections were reduced by almost 60% as the pitch was raised to 5°. Such results substantiate the usefulness of ANN-based methods in the rapid aerodynamic and aeroelastic simulation of wind turbines and provide a prospective direction for effectively designed wind power generation and optimization. This paper reviews and analyzes three types of vertical-axis wind rotors: the classic Savonius, spiral Savonius, and Darrieus designs. Using numerical modeling methods, including computational fluid dynamics (CFD), their aerodynamic characteristics, power output, and efficiency under different operating conditions are examined. Key parameters such as lift, drag, torque, and power coefficient are compared to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each rotor. Results highlight that the Darrieus rotor demonstrates the highest efficiency at higher wind speeds due to lift-based operation, while the spiral Savonius offers improved stability, smoother torque characteristics, and adaptability in turbulent or low-wind environments. The classic Savonius, though less efficient, remains simple, cost-effective, and suitable for small-scale urban applications where reliability is prioritized over high performance. In addition, the study outlines the importance of blade geometry, tip speed ratio, and advanced materials in enhancing rotor durability and efficiency. The integration of modern optimization approaches, such as CFD-based design improvements and machine learning techniques, is emphasized as a promising pathway for developing more reliable and sustainable vertical-axis wind turbines. Although the primary analysis relies on numerical simulations, the observed performance trends are consistent with findings reported in experimental studies, indicating that the results are practically meaningful for design screening, technology selection, and siting decisions. Unlike prior studies that analyze Savonius and Darrieus rotors in isolation or under heterogeneous setups, this work (i) establishes a harmonized, fully specified CFD configuration (common domain, BCs, turbulence/near-wall treatment, time-stepping) enabling like-for-like comparison; (ii) couples the transient aerodynamic loads p(θ,t) into a dynamic FEA + fatigue pipeline (rainflow + Miner with mean-stress correction), going beyond static loading proxies; (iii) quantifies a prototype-stage materials choice rationale (aluminum) with a validated migration path to orthotropic composites; and (iv) reports reproducible wake/torque metrics that are cross-checked against mature models (DMST/actuator-cylinder), providing design-ready envelopes for small/medium VAWTs. Overall, the work provides recommendations for selecting rotor types under different wind conditions and operational scenarios to maximize energy conversion performance and long-term reliability. Vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) have significant potential for renewable energy generation, yet their operational efficiency is often limited by reduced aerodynamic performance and difficulties during start-up. This study investigates the effect of passive flow control and material selection on the performance of H-Darrieus VAWT blades, with the aim of identifying design solutions that enhance start-up dynamics and overall efficiency. Two-dimensional numerical simulations were conducted using the Dynamic Mesh method with six degrees of freedom (6DOF) in ANSYS 19.2 Fluent, enabling a time-resolved assessment of rotor behavior under constant wind velocities. Two blade configurations were analyzed: a baseline NACA0012 geometry and a modified profile with inclined cavities on the extrados. In addition, the influence of blade material was examined by comparing 3D-printed resin blades with lighter 3D-printed polycarbonate blades. The results demonstrate that cavity-modified blades provide superior performance compared to the baseline, showing faster acceleration, higher tip speed ratios, and improved power coefficients, particularly at higher wind velocities. Furthermore, polycarbonate blades achieved more efficient energy conversion than resin blades, highlighting the importance of material properties in turbine optimization. These findings confirm that combining passive flow control strategies with advanced lightweight materials can significantly improve the aerodynamic and dynamic performance of VAWTs, offering valuable insights for future experimental validation and prototype development. Floating vertical−axis wind turbines present unique advantages for deep−water offshore deployments, but their basin model testing encounters significant challenges in aerodynamic load simulation due to Reynolds scaling effects. While Froude−scaled experiments accurately replicate hydrodynamic behaviors, the drastic reduction in Reynolds numbers at the model scale leads to substantial discrepancies in aerodynamic forces compared to full−scale conditions. This study proposed two methodologies to address these challenges. Fully physical model tests adopt a “physical wind field + rotor model + floating foundation” approach, realistically simulating aerodynamic loads during rotor rotation. Semi−physical model tests employ a “numerical wind field + rotor model + physical floating foundation” configuration, where theoretical aerodynamic loads are obtained through numerical calculations and then reproduced using controllable actuator structures. For fully physical model tests, a blade reconstruction framework integrated airfoil optimization, chord length adjustments, and twist angle modifications through Taylor expansion−based sensitivity analysis. The method achieved thrust coefficient similarity across the operational tip−speed ratio range. For semi−physical tests, a cruciform−arranged rotor system with eight dynamically controlled rotors and constrained thrust allocation algorithms enabled the simultaneous reproduction of periodic streamwise/crosswind thrusts and vertical−axis torque. Numerical case studies demonstrated that the system effectively simulates six−degree−of−freedom aerodynamic loads under turbulent conditions while maintaining thrust variation rates below 9.3% between adjacent time steps. These solutions addressed VAWTs’ distinct aerodynamic complexities, including azimuth−dependent Reynolds number fluctuations and multidirectional force coupling, which conventional methods fail to accommodate. The developed techniques enhanced the fidelity of floating VAWT basin tests, providing critical experimental validation tools for emerging offshore wind technologies. Full article
