Procellariiformes are among the most threatened seabirds globally, yet viral pathogens affecting this group remain poorly understood. Herpesviruses are widespread in birds and capable of establishing latency, reactivating under immunosuppression, and causing severe disease, particularly in cross-species transmission. We surveyed herpesvirus in 50 individuals (12 species) that stranded along the southeastern Brazilian coast (2017–2023). A nested pan-PCR protocol targeting the DNA polymerase gene detected herpesvirus DNA in 24% (12/50) of the birds. Seven distinct herpesvirus sequence types were identified, all clustering within the genus Mardivirus, including two previously known variants and novel lineages. To our best knowledge, this represents the first herpesvirus report in the Black-browed Albatross (Thalassarche melanophris), Cape Verde Shearwater (Calonectris edwardsii), Manx Shearwater (Puffinus puffinus), and Southern Giant-Petrel (Macronectes giganteus), as well as new host reports for the Yellow-nosed Albatross (T. chlororhynchos) and Cory’s Shearwater (C. borealis). No associated lesions were observed in histopathology. Our findings expand the known host range of herpesviruses in Procellariiformes and reveal possible circulation among colonies and non-breeding areas across the Southern and Northern hemispheres. Our results underscore the need for integrative ecological-, virological-, and population-based studies to clarify how seabird ecology influences herpesvirus transmission dynamics and long-term persistence in this group. Nest predation is a major factor limiting avian reproductive success. It depends on factors such as bird community, land use, vegetation structure and landscape. Anthropogenic disturbances in native forests, such as logging and livestock grazing, alter forest structure and understory, potentially affecting nest predation rates. In this study, we analysed the susceptibility of open-cup nests to predation in Nothofagus antarctica forests in Tierra del Fuego (Argentina), comparing 15–50 years ago thinned—T and unthinned forests, the latter classified as open—O, closed—C or very closed—VC. We also identified nest predators through camera traps and the main variables influencing predation using a Generalized Lineal Model. Data were collected from 32 sites representing the four studied categories of canopy cover across two years (256 artificial nests per year). Artificial nest predation rates varied between year (9.4% in 2018 and 40.2% in 2022) and among forest types. In 2018, the O forests had the highest predation rate (50%, 12 in total), whereas in 2022, VC forests showed the greatest predation (38%, 39 in total). Camera traps identified three nest predators: Milvago chimango, Campephilus magellanicus and Xolmis pyrope. In 2018, canopy cover was the only variable that influenced artificial nest predation, while in 2022, tree sapling cover, patch shape, open-cup nester density and tree basal area were the most influential (in that order). We found annual variations driven by different ecological factors in N. antarctica forest of southern Patagonia. Although thinning showed no significant long-term effects on artificial nest predation on this study, more research is needed to understand the influence of low impact forest management in austral bird communities. Rapid urbanization has resulted in widespread habitat loss and fragmentation, threatening global biodiversity. Urban parks serve as essential refuges for wildlife within cities, particularly for birds, which are sensitive indicators of ecosystem health and habitat quality. In recent years, numerous Chinese cities have begun integrating biodiversity-friendly design approaches into new park development. However, the effectiveness of these strategies remains insufficiently evaluated. This study assesses the ecological performance of newly built parks by examining 11 recently constructed parks (within the past decade) and 9 historical parks in Zhengzhou, China’s high-density urban area. Monthly bird surveys were conducted across all 20 parks from May to December 2020, covering breeding, post-breeding, and overwintering seasons. Our findings reveal that new parks significantly outperformed old parks in bird abundance, species richness, Shannon diversity index, and functional diversity. Analysis of environmental variables at both local (within-park) and landscape (1-km buffer) scales showed that habitat diversity and multi-layered vegetation structure were the most influential local factors promoting bird diversity, while green space connectivity was the primary landscape-scale contributor. Notably, neither park area nor age significantly predicted diversity patterns. Based on these results, we propose three key planning strategies: (1) enhancing habitat diversity within parks to support species from various ecological niches; (2) implementing multi-layered vegetation planting to provide diverse food resources and nesting opportunities; (3) improving green space connectivity to facilitate species movement and population persistence within urban environments. These findings provide valuable insights for designing more effective biodiversity-friendly urban green spaces. Full article

Cooperative breeding, or helping behavior, has long been recognized in birds. An ignored dichotomy, however, separates the helping found in many individuals of some long-lived, sedentary species from the helping occasionally found in the territories of isolated breeding pairs of some short-lived, long-distance migrant species. Both types of helping are called “cooperative breeding” in the literature. However, recognizing a dichotomy of “frequent” versus “infrequent” cooperative breeding would help justify the study of infrequent helping as a distinct discipline. Cooperative breeding in Wilson’s Warblers is infrequent, and among the unique behaviors found during this study were (1) solicitations by helper males, which aborted host male attacks and apparently initiated territorial acceptance, (2) an absence of sexual aggression between helper males and fertile host females, (3) attacks by helper males on intruding males during host female nest building, (4) helper males singing with impunity when host males were absent from territories, but being attacked when host males were present, and (5) a single male simultaneously serving as a helper in four adjacent host territories. Infrequent helping has essentially been ignored in studies and summaries of cooperative breeding. However, recognizing and studying infrequent helping as a distinct behavioral process could reveal interactions between helping and population ecology. Thus, infrequent cooperative breeding detected in a breeding population could reveal territorial saturation and could indicate that the population is likely ecologically healthy. Full article

Understanding the reproductive ecology of birds and the factors influencing nest predation is essential for developing scientifically sound and effective bird conservation strategies. Certain pheasant species sensitive to environmental changes are vulnerable to threats and face survival pressures such as habitat destruction and human activities. However, research related to their reproductive ecology is lacking. Here for the first time we reported information on breeding biology of the Chinese francolin (Francolinus pintadeanus). This study was conducted during the breeding seasons of the Chinese francolin in 2021, 2023, 2024, and 2025, combining traditional survey and infrared camera technology to monitor its reproductive ecology and nest predators in the Datian and Bangxi Reserves and to identify its potential predators through artificial nest experiments. All nests were open-ground nests located at the roots of dwarf shrubs and grasses. Our findings revealed that the breeding season of the Chinese francolin was mainly in March–September, peaking in May; its clutch size was 4.09 ± 1.27 (N = 22), reproductive success was 27.27%, and 16 nests were failed; and all failed nests were predated, with abandoned nests accounting for 93.75% of the failed nests. In artificial nest experiments, the predation rates of Datian Reserve and Bangxi Reserve were 70.91% (N = 55) and 60.00% (N = 30), respectively, with no significant difference in predation rates between the fully covered and exposed groups (Datian: χ2 = 0.258, p = 0.612; Bangxi: p = 0.710). Natural nest monitoring and artificial nest experiments on the Chinese francolin identified snakes and the small Indian civet (Viverricula indica) as the main predators in Datian Reserve, as well as the greater coucal (Centropus sinensis) and wild boar (Sus scrofa) as potential predators. In contrast, the main predators in Bangxi Reserve were snakes and rodents. These findings indicate differences in nest predator taxa between the two reserves. We recommend prioritizing the restoration of dwarf scrub vegetation and optimizing the habitat management strategy in these reserves to better protect the breeding habitats of pheasants while promoting long-term stability and continuation of their populations. This report presents the first complete natal dispersal trajectory of a female Montagu’s Harrier Circus pygargus, tracked in real time from fledging to first breeding using high-resolution continuous Global Positioning System (GPS) telemetry. The bird’s first flight occurred on 26 July 2024, initiating a 31-day post-fledging dependence phase (PFDP), followed by a 23-day pre-migratory phase (PMP), during which it explored areas up to 280.8 km from the nest and eventually settled ca. 190 km away in the Sirente-Velino Regional Park. From there, autumn migration began on 18 September 2024. The bird reached its first wintering site in Mali by 15 October. It used four wintering areas over 178 days, with a winter home range of 37,615.02 km2. Spring migration started on 11 April 2025 and lasted 21 days, ending with arrival in the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park (Central Italy) on 2 May. The bird used two main sites during the pre-breeding phase (PRBP) before laying eggs on 2 June 2025. The natal dispersal distance, from birthplace to nest site, was 151.28 km. Over 311 days, it covered a total of 14,522.23 km. These findings highlight the value of advanced telemetry in revealing early-life movement ecology and are useful for understanding species-specific patterns of survival, reproduction, and space use and can inform conservation actions. Urban wildlife conservation is emerging as a critical component of sustainable city ecosystems. Rather than simply increasing tree abundance or species richness, conservation management should focus on key species. In this research, Xishan Forest Park in Beijing was chosen as a case study. Our aim was to identify keystone taxa critical for avian foraging and nesting during the breeding season. We performed a network analysis linking bird species, their diets, and nest plants. Dietary components were detected using DNA metabarcoding conducted with avian fecal samples. Nest plants were identified via transect surveys. Two indices of the network, degree and weighted mean degree, were calculated to evaluate the importance of the dietary and nest plant species. We identified 13 bird host species from 107 fecal samples and 14 bird species from 107 nest observations. Based on the degree indices, fruit trees Morus and Prunus were detected as key food sources, exhibiting both the highest degree (degree = 9, 9) and weighted mean degree (lnwMD = 5.21, 4.63). Robinia pseudoacacia provided predominant nesting sites, with a predominant degree of 7. A few taxa, such as Styphnolobium japonicum and Rhamnus parvifolia, served dual ecological significance as both essential food sources and nesting substrates. Scrublands, as a unique habitat type, provided nesting sites and food for small-bodied birds. Therefore, targeted management interventions are recommended to sustain or enhance these keystone resource species and to maintain the multi-layered vertical vegetation structure to preserve the diverse habitats of birds. Background/Objectives: Increasing levels of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) have recently been observed at the human–domestic animal–wildlife interface. Wild birds have been identified as carriers of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria and serve as excellent biomarkers for epidemiological studies. This study assessed the current AMR presence in Eastern Spain’s commensal Escherichia coli isolated from free-ranging Bonelli’s eagles (Aquila fasciata). Methods: Nestlings and their nests were intensively sampled between 2022 and 2024 to determine their AMR profile and characterize E. coli. AMR testing was conducted using the broth microdilution method, following the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing guidelines. Additionally, the presence of eaeA (intimin gene) and stx-1 and stx-2 (shiga toxins) was analyzed by real-time PCR to classify E. coli strains into enteropathogenic (EPEC) and Shiga-toxigenic (STEC) pathotypes. Results: Of all E. coli isolates, 41.7% were resistant to at least one antimicrobial, and 30% were multidrug-resistant. Only two strains were classified as EPEC and none as STEC. The highest resistance rates were observed for amoxicillin and tetracycline (19.6% each). Alarmingly, resistance to colistin and meropenem, last-resort antibiotics in human medicine, was also detected. Conclusions: Although the mechanisms of resistance acquisition remain unclear, transmission is likely to occur through the food chain, with synanthropic prey acting as intermediary vectors. These results highlight the role of Bonelli’s eagles as essential sentinels of environmental AMR dissemination, even in remote ecosystems. Strengthening One Health-based surveillance is necessary to address AMR’s ecological and public health risks in wildlife. Full article

Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are increasingly adopted in urban settings to restore ecological functions and enhance biodiversity. This study evaluates the effects of NbS interventions on bird, insect, and plant communities in the Cavalum Valley urban green area, Penafiel (northern Portugal). Over a three-year period, systematic field surveys assessed changes in species richness, abundance, and ecological indicators following actions such as riparian restoration, afforestation, habitat diversification, and invasive species removal. Results revealed a marked increase in bird overall abundance from 538 to 941 individuals and in average pollinator population size from 9.25 to 12.20. Plant diversity also improved, with a rise in native and RELAPE-listed species (5.23%). Functional group analyses underscored the importance of vegetative structure in supporting varied foraging and nesting behaviours. These findings highlight the effectiveness of integrated NbS in enhancing biodiversity and ecological resilience in urban landscapes while reinforcing the need for long-term monitoring to guide adaptive management and conservation planning. Future work could evaluate ecological resilience thresholds and community participation in citizen science monitoring. Full article

Avian species pose risks for transmitting viruses, including avian circoviruses, that could be a threat for conservation and introduction into commercial flocks. This study investigated the presence of circovirus in 81 avian species from different regions of Brazil, including the northwest region of São Paulo and the coast of Paraná. Blood samples and oropharyngeal, cloacal, and other organ swabs were collected. The samples were extracted and screened using nested PCR for the replicase gene. In positive cases, the samples were sequenced. Regarding the results, a total of 1528 swab samples were collected from 601 birds, of which 24 (4%, 95% CI: 2.4–5.6) tested positive for various circovirus subtypes. Most positive birds (92%, 22/24) were from the northwest region of São Paulo, mainly from the city of São José do Rio Preto (54%, 12/22). The study also identified the presence of circovirus subtypes in avian families that were not previously described. Furthermore, the presence of raven circovirus in the blood sample of a Nyctibius griseus (potoo), suggests the possibility of a new carrier of the virus. Ultimately, the findings underscore the complexity of the viral ecology of avian circoviruses, highlight the necessity of enhancing future studies, and emphasize the need to support health assessment of wildlife, including marine birds. When selecting a habitat, it is optimal for organisms to choose one that maximizes reproductive success through access to high-quality resources, particularly in species that engage in parental care. However, organisms may inadvertently select a habitat for breeding that would initially appear preferential and undamaged, but may, in reality, be detrimental to parent and/or offspring fitness. In this study, we tested whether migratory European Pied Flycatchers (Ficedula hypoleuca) nesting in forest patches affected by outbreaks of the great web-spinning sawfly (Acantholyda posticalis) experienced fitness reductions indicative of an ecological trap, compared to those nesting in unaffected forest patches. After installing nest boxes to attract breeding pairs and potentially combat the outbreak, we found that Flycatchers inhabiting areas with sawfly outbreaks had similar clutch sizes to pairs breeding in unaffected forest patches. Contrarily, the fledgling number and body condition were significantly lower for those nesting in the damaged forests. In providing nest boxes for migrating Flycatcher pairs in forest patches that were subsequently impacted by a pest insect outbreak, an ecological trap arose for those pairs choosing to nest in what appeared to be an unaffected forest at first. Given the inability of breeding pairs to distinguish habitat quality on initial inspection, we suggest that nest boxes be used with caution in areas with unfavorable habitat conditions when attracting migratory birds, given the trends of their declining global numbers. Ecological determinants of avian population dynamics are essential for effective wildlife management and conservation. Black and grey francolins are classified as being of least concern by the IUCN and are an ecologically significant bird in the northern regions of Pakistan. Although habitat degradation and overhunting have adversely affected their populations, research on the population structure and habitat preferences of the Totali Game Reserve, Buner District, Pakistan, remains limited. The present study applied distance sampling via the line transect method to estimate population densities and the quadrat method to assess vegetation characteristics across three distinct habitats. A statistical analysis revealed significant variations in densities across the three habitat types—agricultural lands, agroforests, and pasturelands—with both species exhibiting distinct preferences for pastureland ecosystems. Seasonal trends indicated that autumn represented the peak period for the population, driven by post-breeding surges and optimal habitat conditions. Moreover, both species demonstrated a strong affinity for habitats dominated by specific plant species, including hopbush, raspberry, barberry, and blackberry, which provide a critical resource for food, foraging, nesting, and shelter. These findings highlight the ecological importance of pasturelands and specific vegetation types for supporting the survival of these species. Furthermore, conservation efforts should prioritize the preservation and restoration of pastureland ecosystems and incorporate rigorous monitoring programs to guide adaptive management strategies aimed at mitigating population declines. Mediterranean chestnut forests represent ecologically and economically important systems that support biodiversity while providing timber, non-timber forest products, and cultural services. However, traditional management practices are undergoing substantial shifts, with potential implications for forest structure and biodiversity. This study investigates how variation in forest structure and management intensity influences woodpecker communities in chestnut-dominated forests on Mount Paiko, northern Greece. Standardized surveys were conducted at 26 sites stratified by management intensity, and structural forest characteristics such as tree diameter, basal area, and deadwood volume were quantified. Species richness, abundance, and habitat use (feeding and nesting signs) were assessed in relation to these variables. Seven woodpecker species were detected, with distinct differences in species composition across management types. Feeding activity was positively associated with mean tree diameter, while basal area showed a significant negative correlation with woodpecker diversity. Canonical correspondence analysis revealed species-specific preferences along structural gradients, highlighting the association of the Black and Lesser Spotted woodpeckers with larger-diameter trees and deadwood-rich stands. Our results underscore the role of structural heterogeneity in supporting diverse woodpecker assemblages and highlight the need to integrate biodiversity conservation into chestnut forest management, particularly through selective retention of large trees and deadwood elements. Secondary cavity-nesting birds can utilize artificial nest boxes provided by humans for breeding, making nest boxes important approaches for attracting birds. Artificial nest boxes are therefore widely used in fields such as ornithological research and avian diversity conservation. Under natural conditions, the location of nests often affects the reproductive success of birds. Therefore, understanding the impact of nest box hanging positions on the breeding success of secondary cavity-nesting birds is of great significance for guiding the placement of artificial nest boxes. In this study, we explored the potential factors, including nest-box location, that affect the reproductive success of the russet sparrow (Passer cinnamomeus) by monitoring the nest-site characteristics and reproductive parameters such as clutch size and brood size of those breeding in artificial nest boxes near Dongzhai National Nature Reserve, Henan, China, from April to July 2024. Russet sparrow nesting in boxes on coniferous trees and utility poles showed no significant differences in clutch size, hatching rate, brood size, pre-laying nest-abandonment rate, and whether the breeding was ultimately successful. Nests with earlier egg-laying dates had larger clutch sizes, higher hatching rates, and greater brood sizes. However, the number of fledglings and fledging success were not affected by laying date, and fledging success was not affected by either the distance from the nest site to the nearest road, or the brood size. Both larger brood size and greater distance from the nearest road were associated with increased numbers of fledglings. Furthermore, russet sparrows nesting in boxes on coniferous trees produced significantly more fledglings and exhibited higher fledging success compared to those nesting on utility poles, suggesting that nest boxes’ hanging position may influence russet sparrow reproductive success. These findings not only supplement existing ecological data on russet sparrow reproduction in artificial nest boxes but also provide important insights for avian conservation practices, highlighting the necessity of fully considering hanging position when deploying artificial nest boxes for birds. The urbanization and the expansion of human settlements led to the adaptation of many animal species to living close to humans, often using buildings for roosting. Panel buildings are particularly attractive to rock-dwelling animals such as swifts, swallows, pigeons, and bats due to their numerous cracks and crevices. The abundance of these structures in Eastern Europe has led to the establishment of numerous bird and bat colonies in the cities. However, the recent renovation and insulation of these buildings, while beneficial to residents, threatens the roosts. Construction workers are sometimes unaware of animal presence and inadvertently destroy nests or colonies. Rapid assessments before renovation are essential to rescue individuals and ensure the planning of alternative roosts for bats and birds. We conducted a pilot survey of 61 residential buildings in five municipalities in Bulgaria: Razgrad, Popovo, Haskovo, Dimitrovgrad, and Bobov Dol, to assess bird and bat biodiversity. We performed field assessments using direct observation, thermal cameras, ultrasonic detection, sunset counts, and endoscopic cameras. The most commonly detected bird species were the house martin, barn swallow, common swifts, the Eurasian jackdaw, pigeons, and sparrows. The most commonly detected bat species were the common pipistrelle, noctule, and Kuhl’s pipistrelle. Additionally, we discuss the specifics of the “soviet-type” buildings as nesting facilities for pigeons and the impact of the pigeons on the “micro ecology” of the blocks. Our study aimed to guide conservation actions and awareness during the expanding renovation efforts of old buildings in Bulgaria. Full article
