This paper investigates how governance frameworks shape sustainable tourism outcomes in protected areas by comparing Tara National Park (Serbia) and Triglav National Park (Slovenia). Both parks, established in 1981 and classified under IUCN Category II, exhibit rich biodiversity and mountainous terrain but differ markedly in governance structures, institutional integration, and local community engagement. Using a qualitative, indicator-based methodology, this research evaluates ecological, economic, and social dimensions of sustainability. The findings reveal that Triglav NP demonstrates higher levels of participatory governance, tourism integration, and educational outreach, while Tara NP maintains stricter ecological protection with less inclusive management. Triglav’s zoning model, community council, and economic alignment with regional development policies contribute to stronger sustainability outcomes. Conversely, Tara NP’s centralized governance and infrastructural gaps constrain its potential despite its significant conservation value. This study highlights the importance of adaptive, inclusive governance in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within protected areas. It concludes that hybrid approaches, combining legal rigor with participatory flexibility, can foster resilience and sustainability in ecologically sensitive regions. Full article

Marine pollution from plastic pellets, small granules used as a raw material for plastic production, is a growing environmental problem with grave consequences for marine ecosystems, biodiversity, and human health. This form of primary microplastic is increasingly becoming the focus of environmental policies, owing to its frequent release into the marine environment during handling, storage, and marine transportation, all of which play a crucial role in global trade. The aim of this paper is to contribute to the ongoing discussions by highlighting the environmental risks associated with plastic pellets, which are recognized as a significant source of microplastics in the marine environment. It will also explore how targeted education and awareness-raising within the maritime sector can serve as key tools to address this environmental challenge. The study is based on a survey conducted among seafarers and maritime students to raise their awareness and assess their knowledge of the issue. Given their operational role in ensuring safe and responsible shipping, seafarers and maritime students are in a key position to prevent the release of plastic pellets into the marine environment through increased awareness and initiative-taking practices. The results show that awareness is moderate, but there is a significant lack of knowledge, particularly in relation to the environmental impact and regulatory aspects of plastic pellet pollution. These results underline the need for improved education and training in this area, especially among future and active maritime professionals. Full article

Ensuring a sustainable and healthy human environment in university dormitories is essential for students’ learning, living, and overall health and well-being. To address this need, we carried out a series of systematic field measurements of the noise levels at 30 dormitories in three representative major urban universities in a major provincial capital city in China and designed and implemented a comprehensive questionnaire and surveyed 1005 students about their perceptions of their acoustic environment. We proposed and applied a sustainability–health-oriented, multidimensional assessment framework to assess the acoustic environment of the dormitories and student responses to natural sound, technological sounds, and human-made sounds. Using the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) approach combined with the field measurements and student surveys, we identified three categories and six factors on student health and well-being for assessing the acoustic environment of university dormitories. The field data indicated that noise levels at most of the measurement points exceeded the recommended or regulatory thresholds. Higher noise impacts were observed in early mornings and evenings, primarily due to traffic noise and indoor activities. Natural sounds (e.g., wind, birdsong, water flow) were highly valued by students for their positive effect on the students’ pleasantness and satisfaction. Conversely, human and technological sounds (traffic noise, construction noise, and indoor noise from student activities) were deemed highly disturbing. Gender differences were evident in the assessment of the acoustic environment, with male students generally reporting higher levels of the pleasantness and preference for natural sounds compared to female students. Educational backgrounds showed no significant influence on sound perceptions. The findings highlight the need for providing actionable guidelines for dormitory ecological design, such as integrating vertical greening in dormitory design, water features, and biodiversity planting to introduce natural soundscapes, in parallel with developing campus activity standards and lifestyle during noise-sensitive periods. The multidimensional assessment framework will drive a sustainable human–ecology–sound symbiosis in university dormitories, and the category and factor scales to be employed and actions to improve the level of student health and well-being, thus, providing a reference for both research and practice for sustainable cities and communities. Amid global environmental changes, urbanisation erodes nature connectedness, an important driver of pro-environmental behaviours and human well-being, exacerbating human-made risks like biodiversity loss and climate change. This study introduces a novel hybrid agent-based model (ABM), calibrated with historical urbanisation data, to explore how urbanisation, opportunity and orientation to engage with nature, and intergenerational transmission have shaped nature connectedness over time. The model simulates historical trends (1800–2020) against target data, with projections extending to 2125. The ABM revealed a significant nature connectedness decline with excellent fit to the target data, derived from nature word use in cultural products. Although a lifetime ‘extinction of experience’ mechanism refined the fit, intergenerational transmission emerged as the dominant driver—supporting a socio-ecological tipping point in human–nature disconnection. Even with transformative interventions like dramatic urban greening and enhanced nature engagement, projections suggest a persistent disconnection from nature through to 2050, highlighting locked-in risks to environmental stewardship. After 2050, the most transformative interventions trigger a self-sustaining recovery, highlighting the need for sustained, systemic policies that embed nature connectedness into urban planning and education. The use of AI-generated content in education is significantly increasing, but its reliability for teaching natural sciences and, more specifically, biodiversity-related contents still remains understudied. The need to address this question is substantial, considering the relevance that biodiversity conservation has on human sustainability, and the recurrent presence of these topics in the educational curriculum, at least in Spain. The present article tests the existence of biases in some of the most widely used AI tools (ChatGPT-4.5, DeepSeek-V3, Gemini) when asked a relevant and objective research question related to biodiversity. The results revealed both taxonomic and geographic biases in all the lists of endangered species provided by these tools when compared to IUCN Red List data. These imbalances may contribute to the perpetuation of plant blindness, zoocentrism, and Western centrism in classrooms, especially at levels where educators lack specialized training. In summary, the present study highlights the potential harmful impact that AI’s cultural and social biases may have on biodiversity education and Sustainable Development Goals-aligned learning and appeals to an urgent need for model refinement (using scientific datasets) and teacher AI literacy to mitigate misinformation. Wetlands in northeastern Algeria’s Numidia region provide vital ecosystem services, yet their cultural and intangible values (e.g., spiritual or aesthetic benefits) remain under-recognized in policy and practice. This study explores how gender, education, occupation, and wetland protection status influence local perceptions of provisioning, regulating, and cultural ecosystem services. Based on surveys (n = 552) across 12 wetland communities, results show that women place greater importance on cultural services, while those with higher education display more ecological awareness but less connection to traditional practices. Occupation and residence in protected areas also significantly shape valuation. These findings highlight the need for inclusive conservation strategies that integrate gender perspectives and local knowledge, promoting community-driven stewardship. This research supports more equitable and resilient environmental governance. Full article

Forages are the primary feed source for livestock production systems due to their diversity of adapted species and lower production costs. Forage-based livestock operations are complex systems across climates, soil types, genetics, and production systems. Therefore, increasing the resilience of forage ecosystems requires a comprehensive approach to assess and understand the conditions of each system while considering its needs, goals, and resources. In the southeastern USA, favorable climatic conditions allow for the incorporation of annual forage species into perennial stands to extend the grazing season. Adopting management strategies that support forage biodiversity and nutrients, and land use efficiency are ways to improve sustainable production intensification of forage ecosystems. Additionally, providing proper access to education and knowledge transfer for current and future generations is essential to guarantee the success and longevity of the livestock industry. This review provides an overview of key issues related to the climate and economic resilience of forage–livestock ecosystems and the role of agricultural education and knowledge transfer in shaping sustainable ecosystems. Plastic pollution has been recognized as an emerging risk for the aquatic environment. Shifting from the prevailing linear “take-make-dispose” model to a “circular” economy framework is essential for mitigating the environmental impact of plastics. Microplastics (MPs) in the natural environment are formed when synthetic polymers are fragmented and micronized to a size ≤ 5 mm. MPs are a global environmental problem, particularly within aquatic ecosystems, due to their persistence, accumulation, and uncertain long-term effects. This review examines the degradation pathways of polymers that result in MP formulation, their rate and distribution across ecosystems, and their potential entry into food systems. Key challenges include a lack of standardized detection methods, specifically for nanoparticles; limited evidence of long-term toxicity; and the inefficiency of current waste management frameworks. Emphasis is placed on the cradle-to-grave lifecycle of plastic materials, highlighting how poor design, excessive packaging, and inadequate post-consumer treatment contribute to MP release. The transition from Directive 94/62/EC to the new Regulation (EU) 2025/40 marks a significant policy shift towards stronger preventive measures. In line with the waste hierarchy and reduction in unnecessary packaging and plastic use, effective recycling must be supported by appropriate collection systems, improved separation processes, and citizen education to prevent waste and improve recycling rates to minimize the accumulation of MPs in the environment and reduce health impacts. This review identifies critical gaps in current knowledge and suggests crucial approaches in order to mitigate MP pollution and protect marine biodiversity and public health. Full article

As global environmental challenges intensify, there is an increasing need to equip younger generations with the knowledge, values, and sense of responsibility necessary for a sustainable future. This study explores how environmental citizenship education (ECE), implemented through a nature-based learning program within a Nature and Science School (NSS) in Türkiye, was experienced and interpreted by primary school pupils in relation to their development of understanding of sustainability and environmental citizenship. NSSs, integrated into the formal education system by the Turkish Ministry of National Education, offer inquiry-driven and experiential learning in natural settings. The study took place in Talat Göktepe Grove, a biodiverse site including forest and marine ecosystems, where a four-month ECE program was conducted. A holistic single-case study design was employed, drawing on pupil diaries and semi-structured interviews. A total of 88 pupils engaged in structured outdoor activities addressing biodiversity, sustainability, and the climate crisis. Initially, pupils described environmental citizenship through individual actions. Over time, their perspectives expanded to include civic participation, environmental rights, and collective responsibility. Their reflections also revealed a more nuanced understanding of sustainability, encompassing concepts such as ecosystem balance, renewable energy, and environmental justice. The study provides insight into how nature-based education may support meaning-making around environmental citizenship and sustainability in early education. Full article

Yam (Dioscorea spp.) provides various nutritional and medicinal benefits, including a high starch content, dietary fiber, essential micronutrients, and bioactive compounds. The molecular mechanisms underlying tuber expansion have not yet been clarified. Rapid alkalinization factor (RALF) genes, which mediate various processes in plants, are thought to contribute to the regulation of tuber growth; however, their role in yam development, especially in gibberellin (GA)-mediated processes, remains unclear. Here, we characterized seven DrRALF genes in the yam genome. Analysis of gene duplication demonstrated that the expansion of DrRALF genes was primarily driven by whole-genome duplication or segmental duplication. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that DrRALF genes were concentrated in specific clusters, indicating that their functions are relatively conserved. DrRALF5 was specifically expressed in the roots, and DrRALF2, DrRALF3, DrRALF4, and DrRALF6 were highly expressed in flowers. DrRALF1, DrRALF2, DrRALF3, DrRALF4, DrRALF5, and DrRALF6 were shown to play a role in tuber expansion. Subsequent qRT-PCR validation of four selected DrRALF genes confirmed the regulation of DrRALF2, DrRALF4, DrRALF5, and DrRALF6 by GA and PP333 (paclobutrazol, a GA biosynthesis inhibitor). Yeast one-hybrid assays further showed that the DrRALF6 promoter region interacted with the GA-signaling protein, DrDELLA1. Our findings provide novel insights into the regulatory network controlling yam tuber expansion, especially through the interaction between DrRALF6 and GA signaling pathways. Our results clarify the molecular mechanisms involved in tuber growth and propose a promising strategy for improving yam production through genetic manipulation of the GA-RALF signaling pathway. Beyond Culture/Nature Divides: New Approaches and Tools for a Cultural Integrated Landscape Management

In this article, we revisit the core concepts of nature and of landscape assessment and sustainability, based on which we propose an approach to natural resource management and diversity preservation from the perspective of cultural landscapes. We build on past and contemporary debates on the notion of nature and its relation to “Non-Nature”, attempting to systematize the main variables of the study of past societies as a methodological framework for the analysis of contemporary contexts; this is based on bibliographic references and case studies using such methodological approaches. Landscapes are structured through human activity, which relates to the technological and logistic drivers of historical studies, and are the domain of humans (anthropic nature), as opposed to non-anthropic nature (or wilderness). Sustainable resource management, focused on the preservation of biodiversity and cultural diversity as part of it, needs to overcome the divide between nature and culture, framing debates and conflicts as part of a cultural landscape of discussions served by an established methodological framework, in which education is the main driver and museum-related structures (libraries, etc.) form the flexible institutional backbone. The introduction sets the context for the argument, revisiting some of the theoretical approaches to the notions of nature and landscapes from the late 19th century in Europe, while also referring to reflections in antiquity and traditional and indigenous understandings. A section on materials and methods explains the methodological framework and data used by the author, situating it within a systematization of the humanities’ assessment of the past. A third section explores the interplay between materialities and perceptions, including the relevance of time- and space-driven approaches that shape different perceived landscapes; it proposes a definition of cultural landscape structured through these interplays. The fourth section discusses the dimension of perceived nature as a cultural landscape and characterizes its main drivers, offering two contemporary case studies as examples. A final section of conclusions discusses the role of humanities and of structures like museums, pointing to the new UNESCO program BRIDGES as a useful tool for pursuing landscape transformations. This study presents the development of the Plant Perception Scale (PPS), a multidimensional tool designed to assess high school students’ awareness of the ecological, utilitarian, and cultural significance of plants. Positioned within the broader goal of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), the scale aims to identify perception gaps that may hinder students’ engagement with biodiversity and sustainability. Following a rigorous development process—including item generation, expert review, pilot testing, and psychometric validation—the final 21-item scale revealed a three-factor structure: Ecological Awareness and Sustainability Perception (12 items), Utility-Oriented Plant Perception (5 items), and Cultural and Aesthetic Perception (4 items). Exploratory Factor Analysis confirmed data suitability (KMO = 0.920; Bartlett’s χ2(210) = 2245.215, p < 0.001). Confirmatory Factor Analysis supported the structure with strong fit indices (χ2/df = 2.204; CFI = 0.949; RMSEA = 0.055). Internal consistency was high (Cronbach’s α = 0.88 for the total scale; factor α values ranged from 0.823 to 0.939). The PPS contributes to sustainable education by offering a reliable framework to evaluate plant-related awareness among adolescents and can serve as a diagnostic and pedagogical tool to guide curriculum development and educational interventions in support of the SDGs. Anthropogenic pollution of watersheds significantly threatens aquatic ecosystems, biodiversity, and human health. The present review examines the primary sources of contamination in river catchments, including industrial effluents, agricultural runoff, and urban wastewater discharge. The presence of pollutants degrades water quality, disrupting aquatic habitats and leading to adverse outcomes, including biodiversity loss, eutrophication, and declining fish populations. It also focuses on strategic mitigation approaches, including implementing stricter waste management regulations, adopting sustainable agricultural practices, improving wastewater treatment infrastructure, and public education initiatives. The article summarizes several biotechnological techniques developed to decrease the impact of farming activities on water quality. It also emphasises directions that could be followed concerning specific water chemical indicators, such as the residual quantity of heavy metals. Understanding Earth as a complex, dynamic, and interconnected system is crucial to addressing the contemporary environmental challenges intensified in the Anthropocene. This article reviews foundational Earth System Science (ESS) developments, emphasizing its transdisciplinary nature and highlighting how it has evolved to address critical issues like climate change, biodiversity loss, and sustainability. Concurrently, Earth System Education (ESE) has emerged as an educational approach to foster holistic a understanding, environmental insights, and geoethical values among citizens. Integrating geoethics into ESE equips citizens with scientific knowledge and the ethical reasoning necessary for responsible decision making and proactive engagement in sustainability efforts. This article identifies system thinking and environmental insight as the key competencies that enable individuals to appreciate the interconnectedness of Earth’s subsystems and humanity’s role within this complex framework. This study advocates for embedding a holistic and geoethical view of the Earth system into formal and non-formal education, promoting inclusive, participatory, and action-oriented learning experiences. This educational shift is essential for empowering citizens to effectively address the environmental, social, and economic dimensions of sustainability, thereby fostering resilient, informed, and ethically responsible global citizenship in the Anthropocene. In recent years, forest education has become a critical element in global environmental governance. This study employed the CiteSpace tool to systematically analyze 2917 titles of the forest education literature from the Web of Science Core Collection. The goal was to explore the spatial and temporal trends, thematic evolution, and emerging research directions in this field. The research shows that in recent years, the annual number of published papers on forest education has been on a continuous upward trend, and the attention to the subject has increased significantly. The research field mainly takes the United States in North America as the core center, with the joint participation of scholars from Europe and Asia. The development trajectory of the discipline shows a trend of gradual expansion toward multidisciplinary intersections and multidisciplinary integration based on traditional forestry and environmental sciences. Research hotspots mainly focus on core issues such as forest management, climate change, ecosystem services, and biodiversity. In recent years, they have expanded to include willingness to pay, prevalence, and student groups. It is expected that the research focus in the coming years will be on the cross-cutting issues of integrating forests with the economy, social public health, environmental protection, and sustainable development.
