Natural fiber-based biocomposites are rapidly gaining traction in sustainable manufacturing. However, their supply chain (SC) designs at the feedstock pre-processing stage often lack robust multicriteria decision-making evaluations, which can impact downstream processes and final product quality. This case study proposes a sustainability-driven multicriteria decision-making framework for selecting pre-processing equipment configurations within a hemp-based biocomposite SC. Using a cradle-to-gate system boundary, four alternative configurations combining balers (square vs. round) and hammer mills (full-screen vs. half-screen) are evaluated. The analytical network process (ANP) model is used to evaluate alternative SC configurations while capturing the interdependencies among environmental, economic, social, and technical sustainability criteria. These criteria are further refined with the inclusion of sub-criteria, resulting in a list of 11 key performance indicators (KPIs). To evaluate ranking robustness, a non-linear programming (NLP)-based sensitivity model is developed, which minimizes the weight perturbations required to trigger rank reversals, using an IPOPT solver. The results indicated that the Half-Round setup provides the most balanced sustainability performance, while Full-Square performs best in economic and environmental terms but ranks lower socially and technically. Also, the ranking was most sensitive to the weight of the system reliability and product quality criteria, with up to a 100% shift being required to change the top choice under the ANP model, indicating strong robustness. Overall, the proposed framework enables decision-makers to incorporate uncertainty, interdependencies, and sustainability-related KPIs into the early-stage SC design of bio-based composite materials. Background: Postoperative pain management after a cesarean section remains a significant challenge, as inadequate control can delay maternal recovery and hinder early bonding and breastfeeding. While multimodal analgesia is the standard approach, non–pharmacological strategies like immediate skin–to–skin contact (SSC) are often underused despite their potential benefits in reducing pain, improving uterine contractions, and increasing maternal satisfaction. Objective: To evaluate the effects of immediate SSC on postoperative pain perception, uterine contraction quality, and maternal satisfaction, and to explore ways to incorporate SSC into routine post–cesarean care to promote recovery and humanized care. Method: A randomized clinical trial was conducted with 80 women undergoing elective cesarean sections, divided into two groups: SSC (40 women) and control (40 women). Postoperative pain was measured using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) at various intervals, while uterine contraction quality and maternal satisfaction were assessed through clinical observation and a Likert scale, respectively. Results: We found that women in the SSC group experienced significantly lower pain scores (VAS2 and VAS3, p < 0.001), stronger infraumbilical uterine contractions (92.5%, p < 0.001), and higher satisfaction levels (average 9.98 vs. 6.50, p < 0.001). An inverse correlation was observed between pain intensity and satisfaction, indicating that SSC enhances both physiological and psychological recovery. Conclusions: Immediate SSC after cesarean is an effective, humanizing intervention that reduces pain, supports uterine contractions, and boosts maternal satisfaction. These findings advocate for integrating SSC into standard postoperative care, aligning with ethical principles of beneficence and autonomy. Further research with larger samples is necessary to confirm these benefits and facilitate widespread adoption in maternity protocols. Full article

Depression is now one of the most common mental health concerns in the digital era, calling for powerful computational tools for its detection and its level of severity estimation. A multi-level depression severity detection framework in the Reddit social media network is proposed in this study, and posts are classified into four levels: minimum, mild, moderate, and severe. We take a dual approach using classical machine learning (ML) algorithms and recent Transformer-based architectures. For the ML track, we build ten classifiers, including Logistic Regression, SVM, Naive Bayes, Random Forest, XGBoost, Gradient Boosting, K-NN, Decision Tree, AdaBoost, and Extra Trees, with two recently proposed embedding methods, Word2Vec and GloVe embeddings, and we fine-tune them for mental health text classification. Of these, XGBoost yields the highest F1-score of 94.01 using GloVe embeddings. For the deep learning track, we fine-tune ten Transformer models, covering BERT, RoBERTa, XLM-RoBERTa, MentalBERT, BioBERT, RoBERTa-large, DistilBERT, DeBERTa, Longformer, and ALBERT. The highest performance was achieved by the MentalBERT model, with an F1-score of 97.31, followed by RoBERTa (96.27) and RoBERTa-large (96.14). Our results demonstrate that, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, domain-transferred Transformers outperform non-Transformer-based ML methods in capturing subtle linguistic cues indicative of different levels of depression, thereby highlighting their potential for fine-grained mental health monitoring in online settings. In recent decades, the River Ganges in India has been heavily contaminated with domestic waste and industrial toxins because of cultural activities, a lack of community awareness, an absence of sewage disposal facilities, and rapid population growth. Previous studies have focused separately on either the physical or social factors associated with River Ganges pollution but have not combined these elements in a single study. To fill this research gap, our study assesses the bio-physical and social vulnerability of the River Ganges by using a holistic approach. The following four sampling stations were selected: Rishikesh, Haridwar, Kanpur, and Varanasi. These locations were chosen to test the water quality in bio-physical aspects and to assess the social perceptions of river vulnerability among the residents and visitors. Perceptions of river water quality and likely sources of pollution were gathered via the distribution of over 1000 questionnaires. Data collection took place in the winter and summer of 2022 and 2023. The results showed that river water quality is not suitable for drinking purposes at any of the four cities without conventional treatment, and that the river is unsuitable for bathing at all locations, except upstream of Rishikesh. Nearly 50% of those questioned agreed that the river is polluted, whilst 74% agreed that pollution has increased in recent decades, particularly in the last 10 years. These compelling results are critical for policymakers and decision makers. They highlight the urgent need for novel strategies that address Ganges pollution while fostering community health education and environmental management. By dispelling myths surrounding river quality, this study strengthens the ongoing efforts to restore the Ganges, ensuring that it remains a vital lifeline for present and future generations. South Africa’s bioeconomy strategy identifies bio-innovation as a key driver of economic growth and social development, with plant breeding playing a central role in improving food security through the development of high-yielding, resilient, and high-quality crops. However, consumer perceptions of recent advances, particularly new breeding techniques (NBTs), remain underexplored. This study examines South African consumer attitudes towards plant breeding innovations, using a mixed-methods approach. The initial focus group interviews informed the development of a structured quantitative survey examining familiarity, perceptions, and acceptance of plant breeding technologies. Consumer awareness of plant breeding principles was found to be limited, with 67–68% of respondents unfamiliar with both conventional and modern plant breeding procedures. Despite this information gap, consumers expressed conditional support for modern breeding techniques, especially when associated with actual benefits like increased nutritional value, environmental sustainability, and crop resilience. When favourable effects were outlined, support for general investment in modern breeding practices climbed from 45% to 74%. Consumer purchase decisions emphasised price, product quality, and convenience over manufacturing techniques, with sustainability ranked last among the assessed factors. Trust in the sources of food safety information varied greatly, with medical experts and scientists being ranked highly, while government sources were viewed more sceptically. The results further suggest that targeted education could improve customer confidence, as there is a significant positive association (R2 = 0.938) between familiarity and acceptance. These findings emphasise the significance of open communication strategies and focused consumer education in increasing the adoption of plant breeding breakthroughs. The study offers useful insights for policymakers, researchers, and industry stakeholders working on engagement strategies to facilitate the ethical growth and application of agricultural biotechnology in support of food security and quality in South Africa. This study contributes to a better understanding of South African consumers’ perceptions of plant breeding innovations and food safety. The research findings offer valuable insights for policymakers, researchers, and industry stakeholders in developing effective engagement and communication strategies that address consumer concerns and promote the adoption of products derived from diverse plant breeding technologies. Spinal cord injury (SCI) results in a significant loss of motor, sensory, and autonomic function, imposing substantial biosocial and economic burdens. Traditional approaches, such as stem cell therapy and immune modulation, have faced translational challenges, whereas neuromodulation and digital brain–spinal cord interfaces combining brain–computer interface (BCI) technology and epidural spinal cord stimulation (ESCS) to create brain–spine interfaces (BSIs) offer promising alternatives by leveraging residual neural pathways to restore physiological function. This review examines recent advancements in neuromodulation, focusing on the future translation of clinical trial data to clinical practice. We address key considerations, including scalability, patient selection, surgical techniques, postoperative rehabilitation, and ethical implications. By integrating interdisciplinary collaboration, standardized protocols, and patient-centered design, neuromodulation has the potential to revolutionize SCI rehabilitation, reducing long-term disability and enhancing quality of life globally. Background: Chronic pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience that greatly affects functioning and well-being. Studies link chronic pain and violence against women, with an odds ratio of 2.08 and a 26% prevalence rate. The bio-psycho-social consequences reduce quality of life and cause disability. Despite extensive research, the etiology remains unclear. This study investigates the bio-psycho-social risk factors of chronic pain in women, both victims and non-victims of violence. Methods: A case–control study (December 2023–June 2024) used odds ratios and Fisher’s exact test to explore risk factors associated with chronic pain. Univariate logistic regressions identified significant predictors. Results: The study included 170 women (68 victims), half with chronic pain. Nine risk factors were specific to victims (three biological, six psycho-social), four to non-victims (two biological, two psycho-social), and twenty-three to all women (five biological, eighteen psycho-social). A four-factor model best explained risk in victims and all women, while a two-factor model fit non-victims. Conclusions: The bio-psycho-social model of chronic pain is supported, identifying specific risk factors. These findings can aid anti-violence and healthcare professionals in screening and early intervention. Full article

Smart cities are widely regarded as a promising solution to urbanization challenges; however, environmental aspects such as outdoor thermal comfort and urban heat island are often less addressed than social and economic dimensions of sustainability. To address this gap, we developed and evaluated an affordable, scalable, and cost-effective weather station platform, consisting of a centralized server and portable edge devices to facilitate urban heat island and outdoor thermal comfort studies. This edge device is designed in accordance with the ISO 7726 (1998) standards and further enhanced with a positioning system. The device can regularly log parameters such as air temperature, relative humidity, globe temperature, wind speed, and geographical coordinates. Strategic selection of components allowed for a low-cost device that can perform data manipulation, pre-processing, store the data, and exchange data with a centralized server via the internet. The centralized server facilitates scalability, processing, storage, and live monitoring of data acquisition processes. The edge devices’ electrical and shielding design was evaluated against a commercial weather station, showing Mean Absolute Error and Root Mean Square Error values of 0.1 and 0.33, respectively, for air temperature. Further, empirical test campaigns were conducted under two scenarios: “stop-and-go” and “on-the-move”. These tests provided an insight into transition and response times required for urban heat island and thermal comfort studies, and evaluated the platform’s overall performance, validating it for nuanced human-scale thermal comfort, urban heat island, and bio-meteorological studies. Preterm birth (PTB; <37 weeks’ gestation) is a persistent problem in the United States that affects non-Hispanic Black women at much higher rates than White women. Several biomarkers have been associated with PTB, including vitamin D deficiency (VDD) and low levels of vitamin D-binding protein (VDBP). However, no biomarker has been found to predict PTB. To identify a predictive biomarker of PTB, gene expression differences were determined in Black women with PTB and full-term births and between women with high and low levels of plasma vitamin D and high and low VDBP levels. In this pilot study of 19 pregnant women from the Biosocial Impact on Black Births (BIBB) study, we found that 47 genes were upregulated and 16 genes were downregulated in women with PTB as compared with women who had a full-term birth, 361 genes were downregulated and 61 genes were upregulated in women with VDD as compared with those that had vitamin D sufficiency, and 44 genes were upregulated and 295 were downregulated in women with low VDBP. Several genes expressed by neutrophils were downregulated in the PTB, VDD, and low VDBP groups. These findings support the idea that vitamin D and VDBP status may be important clinical markers influencing the gene expression of genes associated with PTB. Full article

Background/Objectives: Physical exercise and curcumin supplementation can positively influence parameters related to cognition and neuro-oxidative status. However, research on the combined effects of resistance training with elastic bands and supplementation with a curcumin-based formulation is limited. Moreover, different types of contractions (e.g., concentric and eccentric) may elicit distinct neurophysiological effects. This study evaluated the effectiveness of two high-resistance training (high-RT) programs using elastic bands in improving neuro-oxidative markers (brain-derived neurotrophic factor [BDNF] and F2-isoprostanes), cognitive function, physical performance, and quality of life, and examined the additional benefits of curcumin supplementation. Methods: Eighty-one sedentary older adults were randomly assigned to one of the following groups: accentuated eccentric training with either a bio-optimized curcumin formulation (Aecc-Cur) or placebo (Aecc-Pla); maximum strength training with either curcumin (Max-Cur) or placebo (Max-Pla); or a control group receiving curcumin (C-Cur) or placebo (C-Pla) without training. The training groups participated in a 16-week full-body high-RT program using elastic bands. Results: BDNF significantly increased in Aecc-Cur and Aecc-Pla (both p ≤ 0.020) but showed no changes after Max-Cur or Max-Pla (both p ≥ 0.256). All other dependent variables improved similarly across training groups (all p ≤ 0.50). Curcumin supplementation combined with exercise significantly reduced F2-isoprostanes in the Max-Cur group compared to Aecc-Pla, and enhanced 6-Minute Walk Test performance in Aecc-Cur and Max-Cur compared to their placebo counterparts. C-Cur showed nonsignificant changes in BDNF, F2-isoprostanes, social functioning, and vitality, while C-Pla worsened these parameters. Notably, at least half of the participants in the experimental groups exhibited clinically significant improvements in 11 of 14 dependent variables. Conclusions: Both high-RT protocols led to improvements in almost all dependent variables, with the Aecc program demonstrating greater effectiveness in boosting BDNF, a key neuroprotection marker. Curcumin supplementation alone and with exercise positively influenced neuro-oxidative markers and quality of life. Full article

The Potential Role of Bio Extra Virgin Olive Oil (BEVOO) in Recovery from HPV 16-Induced Tonsil Cancer: An Exploratory Case Study

The human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV 16) is a high-risk human papillomavirus strain commonly associated with oropharyngeal cancers, including lymph node involvement. The treatment for HPV 16-related tonsil cancer, commonly involving surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, presents significant challenges. Complications such as oral mucositis, xerostomia, dysphagia, dysgeusia, hypogeusia, impaired gustatory function, and significant weight loss frequently arise, leading to reduced nutritional intake, impaired healing, and recovery progression. These challenges underscore the need for supportive interventions to enhance rehabilitation and the post-recovery period, improve treatment tolerance, and maintain quality of life. Objective: This single-subject study examines a 67-year-old male patient diagnosed with a T1N3b (small primary tumor with advanced lump node involvement) associated with HPV 16 positivity, indicating a virus-associated oncogenesis. Methods: The patient underwent radiation therapy and chemotherapy, leading to treatment-associated side effects. After having dietary drinks for daily nourishment, the patient routinely incorporated oral bio extra virgin olive oil (BEVOO) to cope with indicated challenges. Results: Body composition and metabolic parameters showed treatment-induced declines, followed by substantial but not complete recovery during follow-up examination. Visual Analog Scale (VAS) scores reflected gradual improvements in dysphagia, xerostomia, mucositis, and subtle but ongoing enhancement of the dysgeusia, gustatory perception, and oral palatability. The BEVOO supplementation and mindfulness were associated with positive recovery trends. Additional variables could have impacted the outcomes, preceding and throughout treatment, including the patient’s cognitive and somatic health, environmental conditions, dietary habits, individual attitudes toward recovery, physical activity, and patient way of life. Conclusions: These results emphasize the need for additional research employing a comprehensive, multi-factorial framework that accounts for the complex interplay of physiological, psycho-social, and environmental contributors. More extensive, more diverse studies are essential to confirm these observations and substantiate the role of BEVOO as a supportive intervention in cancer recovery. Full article

Genome-editing technology has advanced significantly since the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded for the development of clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) and CRISPR-associated protein 9 (Cas9). While CRISPR–Cas9 has become widely used in academic research, its social implementation has lagged due to unresolved patent disputes and slower progress in gene function analysis. To address this, new approaches bypassing direct gene function analysis are needed, with bioinformatics and next-generation sequencing (NGS) playing crucial roles. NGS is essential for sequencing the genome of target species, but challenges such as data quality, genome heterogeneity, ploidy, and small individual sizes persist. Despite these issues, advancements in sequencing technologies, like PacBio high-fidelity (HiFi) long reads and high-throughput chromosome conformation capture (Hi-C), have improved genome sequencing. Bioinformatics contributes to genome editing through off-target prediction and target gene selection, both of which require accurate genome sequence information. In this review, I will give updates on the development of genome editing and bioinformatics technologies with a focus on the rapid progress in genome sequencing. Full article

Biodigital Micro-Cellular Mashrabiya: Lattice Architectural Microbial Membranes for Sustainable Built Environments

A typical Mashrabiya in Islamic architecture represents an integral climatic and sustainable solution, not only by offering recycling and the responsible use of small pieces of wood assembled in stunning geometrical and natural abstract lattice panels, but also because it offers air cooling, filtration, and flow from the exterior to the interior of a building. This leads to the air flow being cooled by the water spray offered by the interior patio fountains, in addition to protecting the sanctity and privacy of a building’s inhabitants, which complies with religious beliefs and social considerations. This integral sustainable solution acts on multiple scales: material recycling and responsible use, as well as climatic and socio-cultural considerations similar to Gaudi’s approach with Trencadís technology, not far from the Arabic and Islamic architectural influence revived in the Catalan Modernism contemporary to his time. In these footsteps, we explore the Mashrabiya of our time: an interactive and living architectural membrane, a soft interface that reacts by growing, giving shade, filtrating air, and transforming in time. Despite attempts to design a contemporary concept of the Mashrabiya, none of them have adopted the living organism to form an interactive living lattice architectural system. In this work, we propose the biodigital micro-cellular Mashrabiya as a novel idea and a proof of concept based on employing the authors’ previously published research findings to utilize eco-friendly biopolymers inoculated with useful native–domestic microbial strains to act as soft and living membranes, where these organisms grow and vary in their chemical and physical characteristics, sustainable function, and industrial value. This study implements an analytical–descriptive methodology to analyze the key characteristics of a traditional Mashrabiya as an integral sustainable solution and how the proposed micro-cellular biodigital Mashrabiya system can fulfill these criteria to be integrated into the built environment, forging future research trajectories on the bio-/micro-environmental compatibility of this biomaterial-based biodigital Mashrabiya system by understanding these materials’ physical, chemical, and physiological traits and their sustainable value. In this work, a biodigital Mashrabiya is proposed based on employing previous research findings on experimentally analyzed biomaterials from a biomineralized calcium-phosphate-based hydrogel and bio-welded seashell–mycelium biocomposite in forging the lattice system of a biodigital Mashrabiya, analyzing the feasibility and sustainability impact of these systems for integration into the architectural built environment. Exploring Peri-Implantitis Risk-Factors: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background/Objectives: With the increasing use of dental implants in edentulous patients and the high prevalence of peri-implantitis, understanding its microbial and risk factors is crucial. This study investigated Romanian patients from two private dental clinics in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, diagnosed with peri-implantitis, focusing on identifying the predominant bacterial species at affected sites compared with healthy implant sites. Additionally, we examined the impact of factors such as smoking, gender, age, and prosthetic restoration type on disease prevalence. Methods: This cross-sectional study, conducted between January 2023 and December 2024, included randomly selected patients who met the predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. We enrolled 22 patients and 50 implants in the study. Data collected from medical records, clinical evaluations, and microbiological assessments were subsequently entered into a computerized database. Clinical data were analyzed using Social Science Statistics software(Jeremy Staangroom 2018). Bacterial samples were assessed, incubated, and subsequently identified using the Vitek 2 Compact System (BioMérieux, Marcy—l’ Étoile, France). Results: Peri-implantitis incidence was found to be independent of gender, more prevalent in the mandible, and equally affected smokers and non-smokers. The disease involves a complex polymicrobial infection, with pathogenic bacteria triggering the condition and opportunistic bacteria sustaining it. Conclusions: Peri-implantitis is a complex polymicrobial infection that arises from the interaction of strict pathogenic bacteria and opportunistic bacteria. Peri-implantitis results from intricate interactions of local, systemic, and microbial factors. Identifying its causes is essential for developing effective treatments, with future research emphasizing the role of opportunistic bacteria in disease progression. Full article

Background/Objectives: Comprehensive care is crucial in emergency healthcare. In intensive care units, a holistic approach may be difficult to implement due to the conditions of the patients and existing work protocols aimed at maintaining vital functions for the survival of patients. The present study aims to explore and describe the knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of critical care and emergency health professionals regarding the implementation of integrated care practices within intensive care units, with the goal of identifying barriers and facilitators to adopting a holistic approach in emergency healthcare settings. Methods: This study implemented an exploratory and descriptive qualitative design with a phenomenological approach through semi-structured interviews with health professionals who had worked in intensive care units or emergency services for both public and private health institutions in Spain (n = 25). The study was conducted during the years 2023 and 2024, using a convenience sampling method along with snowball sampling, and a narrative discourse analysis was performed. The MAXQDA 2022 software program was used. This study was granted due permission by the Research Ethics Committee belonging to the Junta de Andalucía, under protocol code 0768-N-20. Results: The total sample consisted of 25 healthcare professionals from critical care and emergency services in Spain. The main themes, as key findings, were knowledge and perception, determining factors, resources and infrastructure, the bioethical dimension, perspectives on comprehensive care, and multidimensional impact. Most of the professionals were familiar with comprehensive care, but lack of resources and time prevented them from carrying it out in their units. Conclusions: For critical care and emergency professionals, comprehensive care is important to their clinical practice, but barriers to its realization still exist. Understanding the importance to these professionals of the application of comprehensive care is fundamental to establishing measures for its implementation in these services. It is also a motivation to continue providing humanized and compassionate care that respects the patient’s dignity. It is a priority to provide the necessary infrastructure and human resources so that patients admitted to these units can be cared for with this tool. Full article
