The global climate crisis has driven unprecedented agreements among nations on carbon mitigation. With China’s commitment to carbon peaking and carbon neutrality targets, the building sector has emerged as a critical focus for emission reduction, particularly because office buildings account for over 30% of building energy consumption. However, a systematic and regionally adaptive low-carbon technology evaluation framework is lacking. To address this gap, this study develops a multidimensional decision-making system to quantify and rank low-carbon technologies for office buildings in Beijing. The method includes four core components: (1) establishing three archetypal models—low-rise (H ≤ 24 m), mid-rise (24 m < H ≤ 50 m), and high-rise (50 m < H ≤ 100 m) office buildings—based on 99 office buildings in Beijing; (2) classifying 19 key technologies into three clusters—Envelope Structure Optimization, Equipment Efficiency Enhancement, and Renewable Energy Utilization—using bibliometric analysis and policy norm screening; (3) developing a four-dimensional evaluation framework encompassing Carbon Reduction Degree (CRD), Economic Viability Degree (EVD), Technical Applicability Degree (TAD), and Carbon Intensity Degree (CID); and (4) conducting a comprehensive quantitative evaluation using the AHP-entropy-TOPSIS algorithm. The results indicate distinct priority patterns across the building types: low-rise buildings prioritize roof-mounted photovoltaic (PV) systems, LED lighting, and thermal-break aluminum frames with low-E double-glazed laminated glass. Mid- and high-rise buildings emphasize integrated PV-LED-T8 lighting solutions and optimized building envelope structures. Ranking analysis further highlights LED lighting, T8 high-efficiency fluorescent lamps, and rooftop PV systems as the top-recommended technologies for Beijing. Additionally, four policy recommendations are proposed to facilitate the large-scale implementation of the program. This study presents a holistic technical integration strategy that simultaneously enhances the technological performance, economic viability, and carbon reduction outcomes of architectural design and renovation. It also establishes a replicable decision-support framework for decarbonizing office and public buildings in cities, thereby supporting China’s “dual carbon” goals and contributing to global carbon mitigation efforts in the building sector. Evaluating performance is a necessary and specific process across all sectors and organizational levels, shaped by context, indicators, and purpose. Considering global sustainability transitions, understanding financial performance entails a deeper perspective on technical accuracy, conceptual clarity, and systemic integration. This study investigates how financial performance is assessed and interpreted in sustainability-focused research, drawing on a bibliometric analysis of 490 articles indexed in the Web of Science from 2007 to 2023. Using SciMAT, we traced thematic evolutions and revealed a fragmented research landscape marked by competing theoretical, methodological, and practical orientations. To address this conceptual dispersion, we applied the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to evaluate five key alternatives to financial-performance assessment (quantitative measurement, definition-oriented reasoning, theoretical frameworks, experiential comparison, and integration with sustainability and ethics) against three conceptual criteria (philosophical depth, holistic scope, and multidisciplinary relevance). The results highlight a strong preference for holistic and integrative models of financial performance, with quantitative measurement ranking highest in practical terms, followed by experiential and sustainability-driven approaches. These results underscore the need to align financial evaluation more closely with sustainability values, bridging short-term metrics with long-term societal impact. By combining diachronic thematic mapping with structured decision analysis, this study advances a more reflective and forward-looking framework for performance research. It contributes to sustainability research by identifying underexplored epistemological pathways and supporting the development of financial evaluation models that are inclusive, ethically grounded, and aligned with sustainable development goals. Monumental trees, defined by their exceptional size, form, and age, are critical components of both cultural heritage and ecological systems. However, their conservation faces increasing threats from habitat fragmentation, climate change, and inadequate public policies. This review synthesized global research on monumental trees by analyzing 204 peer-reviewed articles published between 1989 and 2024 that were sourced from Web of Science and Scopus. Our bibliometric analysis highlighted Olea europaea and Castanea sativa as the most frequently studied species and identified a surge in publications after 2019, particularly from the USA, Italy, and Spain. Key research themes included conservation, biodiversity, and ecosystem services. The methodological approaches varied globally, encompassing ranking systems; GIS mapping; remote sensing; and non-invasive diagnostic tools, such as acoustic tomography and chlorophyll fluorescence. Conservation strategies discussed included vegetative propagation, cryopreservation, and legal risk management. Despite advances in these techniques, significant gaps remain in effectively addressing environmental pressures and integrating multidisciplinary approaches. We concluded that targeted, interdisciplinary strategies are essential to safeguard monumental trees as vital ecological and cultural landmarks. Full article

In this study, we examine banks’ sustainability orientations (SOs) in the Baltic region, focusing on how institutional, stakeholder, national culture, and leadership factors influence strategic alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We assess how Baltic banks integrate sustainable development using a bibliometric review, financial performance analysis, Spearman’s rank correlation, and content analysis of sustainability-related disclosures for 2023, and interpret Hofstede’s cultural dimensions of the Baltic countries alongside these results. Our bibliometric review reveals limited research on SO and SD in banking, with a gradual annual increase of 14.8%. Our content analysis findings suggest that smaller banks are more broadly aligned with the SDGs; however, 36.4% of the largest banks in the region did not have a dedicated sustainability report a year before ESRS and CSRD requirements became mandatory. Notably, the reporting approach shows no statistically significant correlation with assets, size, global/local coverage, or the number of aligned SDGs. Furthermore, our content analysis findings reveal a persistent sustainability paradox: while economic and environmental goals are strategically prioritised, social SDGs are significantly underrepresented. We propose that this reflects a lack of demand for socially sustainable development rooted in regional contexts and national culture, which shape SO and organisational and leadership responses. The purpose of this review is to synthesise the accumulated knowledge on Global Innovation Index (GII) research. We utilised a corpus from the Web of Science Core Collection to systematically examine the antecedents, consequences, and relationships among the GII’s dimensions. Additionally, we employed the bibliometric techniques of bibliographic coupling and co-citation analysis to identify the leading areas of GII research and the foundational literature in this field. Our systematic review of GII empirical research allowed us to graphically represent the significant relationships among its dimensions. The findings from the bibliographic coupling revealed five recent lines of investigation in GII research: configurational methods; innovation efficiency and policy; competitiveness, entrepreneurship, and sustainable development; innovation rankings; and culture. Furthermore, the co-citation analysis highlighted four clusters of literature that have contributed to GII research. We aim to enhance the field of Innovation Studies by showcasing the current state of research on the GII, one of the most promising tools for measuring innovation activity, and to provide insights into potential future research avenues to further develop this area of study. As Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are increasingly incorporated into energy systems, smart grids are becoming essential parts of modern energy infrastructures. However, this integration exposes them to significant cybersecurity risks, highlighting the need for effective prevention and mitigation strategies to enhance resilience. Due to their promising implications, blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI) have emerged as key technologies to strengthen security, improve data analysis, and optimize processes in smart grids. This bibliometric study investigates key trends, opportunities, and evolving dynamics within the field, analyzing a dataset of 9611 articles from the Scopus database, covering the period 2014–2024. To evaluate the research, we utilized a range of bibliometric tools, including Bibliometrix R, VOSviewer, and Python. We used these tools to identify impactful articles. We also analyzed country and institutional productivity, assessed prolific authors, and uncovered emerging trends. The findings highlight a shift towards advanced smart grids incorporating AI and blockchain, with significant progress in Morocco’s research since 2016. Morocco ranks 36th globally and 3rd in Africa, contributing to the National Digital Morocco 2030 Strategy, which promotes digital transition and innovation, particularly in smart grids, to bolster the country’s energy system. Background: Emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases (EIDs and Re-EIDs) cause significant economic crises and public health problems worldwide. Epidemics appear to be more frequent, complex, and harder to prevent. Early warning systems can significantly reduce outbreak response times, contributing to better patient outcomes. Improving early warning systems and methods might be one of the most effective responses. This study employs a bibliometric analysis to dissect the global research hotspots and evolutionary trends in the field of infectious disease early warning, with the aim of providing guidance for optimizing public health emergency management strategies. Methods: Publications related to the role of early warning systems in detecting and responding to infectious disease outbreaks from 1999 to 2024 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database. CiteSpace software was used to analyze the datasets and generate knowledge visualization maps. Results: A total of 798 relevant publications are included. The number of annual publications has sharply increased since 2000. The USA produced the highest number of publications and established the most extensive cooperation relationships. The Chinese Center for Disease Control & Prevention was the most productive institution. Drake, John M was the most prolific author, while the World Health Organization and AHMED W were the most cited authors. The top two cited references mainly focused on wastewater surveillance of SARS-CoV-2. The most common keywords were “infectious disease”, “outbreak”, “transmission”, “virus”, and “climate change”. The basic keyword “climate” ranked the first and long duration with the strongest citation burst. “SARS-CoV-2”, “One Health”, “early warning system”, “artificial intelligence (AI)”, and “wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE)” were emerging research foci. Conclusions: Over the past two decades, research on early warning of infectious diseases has focused on climate change, influenza, SARS, virus, machine learning, warning signals and systems, artificial intelligence, and so on. Current research hotspots include wastewater-based epidemiology, sewage, One Health, and artificial intelligence, as well as the early warning and monitoring of COVID-19. Research foci in this area have evolved from focusing on climate–disease interactions to pathogen monitoring systems, and ultimately to the “One Health” integrated framework. Our research findings underscore the imperative for public health policymakers to prioritize investments in real-time surveillance infrastructure, particularly wastewater-based epidemiology and AI-driven predictive models, and strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration frameworks under the One Health paradigm. Developing an integrated human–animal–environment monitoring system will serve as a critical development direction for early warning systems for epidemics. Full article

Hyper-heuristics emerged as a broader metaheuristic framework to address the limitations of traditional optimization heuristics. By abstracting the design of low-level heuristics, hyper-heuristics offer a flexible and adaptable approach to solving complex problems. This study conducts a bibliometric analysis of the hyper-heuristic-algorithms-related literature indexed in the Scopus database to map its evolution, identify key research trends, and pinpoint influential authors and journals. The study encompasses document growth over time, predominant author keywords, high-impact journals, and prolific authors ranked by publication count and citation impact. A detailed examination of author keywords unveils the core research themes within the hyper-heuristic domain. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the current literature in hyper-heuristic research and offer guidance for novice and experienced researchers. Full article

Over the past 15 years, Building Information Modelling (BIM), Historic BIM (HBIM), Digital Twins, and Internet of Things (IoT) have gained prominence in architecture, construction, and building technology. This study presents a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of 5568 publications indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection between 1993 and 2024, using VOSviewer and Biblioshiny. The analysis investigates publication trends, research hotspots, citation structures, and collaborative networks, revealing evolving patterns across countries, institutions, and disciplines. The peak year was 2023 (905 papers, 2226 citations), with Automation in Construction, Buildings, and Journal of Building Engineering as the leading journals. Cheng JCP emerged as the most cited author (2059 citations, 56 papers), while Hong Kong Polytechnic University ranked highest in institutional output. China, the USA, and the UK were the top publishing countries. This study uniquely integrates BIM, HBIM, Digital Twins, and IoT as interconnected technological domains, analysing their convergence in shaping intelligent, data-driven infrastructure within the AEC sector. Unlike previous bibliometric reviews that treat these domains in isolation, this paper offers a unified framework and highlights underexplored research intersections—such as the integration of IoT in heritage documentation. The results show clear thematic clusters, a strong shift toward sustainability and interoperability, and gaps in geographic and methodological diversity. This bibliometric mapping not only synthesizes the state of research but also formulates future research directions and proposes original research questions that can guide scholars and practitioners alike. Fructooligosaccharides (FOSs) are carbohydrates of high nutritional value with various prebiotic properties. Optimizing their production process is of significant interest for expanding commercial-scale production. This review discusses the properties and potential applications of FOSs, addressing production challenges and providing an economic market analysis. Bibliometric analysis of data concerning the functional properties, production, purification, and applications of FOSs revealed an over 87% increase in the number of worldwide publications from 2012 to 2022, rising from 88 to 165. Furthermore, contributions from ninety-three countries were identified up to 2024, with Brazil ranking first, with 326 publications. Furthermore, Aureobasidium sp. and Aspergillus sp. have shown the best results for FOS production, with reported conversion in the order of 0.66 g FOS/g sucrose. Nevertheless, the formation of by-products or co-products requiring separation from the medium remains a challenge. Activated carbon, cation exchange resins, and zeolites are highlighted as key adsorbents, with the adsorption process achieving FOS purity exceeding 90%. Furthermore, membrane technology is identified as a more efficient and promising separation method. Addressing these limitations will facilitate the further expansion of the growing global FOS market, promoting a sustainable approach and their integration with biorefineries, which can enable the development of a wider range of value-added products. Grey systems are applied in numerous domains, proving a high efficiency in predicting and investigating complex systems, where data is insufficient, unknown, or partially known. The systems have a strong contribution in the decision-making field under uncertainty, by identifying the connection between variables and optimizing the process of choosing the strategies. With time, the methods offered by the grey systems theory have faced a continuous adoption process in various research fields associated with decision-making. In this context, this paper aims to provide an in-depth bibliometric exploration, focusing on a filtered dataset, gathered from Clarivate Analytics’ Web of Science Core Collection database (WoS) for the purpose of better highlighting the adoption process faced by grey systems theory in the decision-making field under uncertainty. Based on the extracted dataset, the value registered for the annual growth rate is 17.1%, proving that the scientific community’s focus in this field is significant, and it has maintained academics’ interest for a long time. Also, the results of the bibliometric analysis showed that the Journal of Grey System was the most relevant source, while Sifeng Liu provided the greatest contribution to the field based on the number of published papers. Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics is ranked first in the top of most relevant affiliation based on the number of published papers, while China—the homeland of grey systems theory—assumes the leading contributor country place. The review of the top 10 most cited papers revealed the advantages of using grey systems theory in decision-making field under uncertainty. Full article

Understanding of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) and its research progress and applications is critical to answer scientific questions related to climate change. While numerous scientific papers based on CMIP have been published, there is no quantitative study examining scientific research on climate variability, predictability, and change supported by CMIP. Therefore, the statistical characteristics of CMIP-related publications, including journals, disciplines, co-occurrence and burst detection of keywords, and bibliographic coupling, were analyzed using bibliometric analysis. The results show that research based on CMIP has increased exponentially from 2000 to 2023. About 20% of the research was published in the Journal of Climate and Climate Dynamics. CMIP-related research spanned several disciplines, including meteorology, atmospheric science, geosciences, and environmental sciences. The United States, China, and the United Kingdom ranked top three for CMIP publications. The prominent focus of related research involved the whole climate system, including climate change and variability, climate behavior, the carbon cycle, sea surface temperature, sea ice, modeling, bias correction, simulations, climate sensitivity, extreme events, soil moisture, hydrology, and future change. This study can help relevant scientists better understand the developments and trends of CMIP research, thereby facilitating the use of CMIP data. Full article

The rapid proliferation of digital technologies across industries has created significant opportunities for enterprises, yet a comprehensive and integrated review of digital technology diffusion (DTD) at the firm level remains underexplored. This study addresses this gap by systematically analyzing 87 research articles published between 1993 and June 2024 in top-tier management and business journals (ranked A* or A in the ABDC-JQL 2022), sourced from the Web of Science database. Employing a hybrid review methodology that combines bibliometric and framework-based reviews, this study provides a comprehensive overview of the existing research on firm-level DTD. By leveraging the established theories, contexts, methods, antecedents, decisions, and outcomes (TCM-ADO) framework, we consolidate fragmented insights and propose future research directions. This study pioneers the application of the TCM-ADO framework to DTD, offering a novel taxonomy that advances theoretical development. Full article

European Union Machine Learning Research: A Network Analysis of Collaboration in Higher Education (2020–2024)

The intense rising of machine learning in the previous years, bolstered by post-COVID-19 digitalization, left some of us pondering upon the transparency practices involving projects sourced from European Union funds. This study focuses on the European Union research clusters and trends in the ecosystem of higher education institutions (HEIs). The manually curated dataset of bibliometric data from 2020 to 2024 was analyzed in steps, from the traditional bibliometric indicators to natural language processing and collaboration networks. Centrality metrics, including degree, betweenness, closeness, and eigenvector centrality, and a three-way-intersection of community detection algorithms were computed to quantify the influence and the connectivity of institutions in different communities in the collaborative research networks. In the EU context, results indicate that institutions such as Universidad Politecnica de Madrid, the University of Cordoba, and Maastricht University frequently occupy central positions, echoing their role as local or regional hubs. At the global level, prominent North American and UK-based universities (e.g., University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University, Imperial College London) also remain influential, standing as a witness to their enduring influence in transcontinental research. Clustering outputs further confirmed that biomedical and engineering-oriented lines of inquiry often dominated these networks. While multiple mid-ranked institutions do appear at the periphery, the data highly implies that large-scale initiatives gravitate toward well-established players. Although the recognized centers provide specialized expertise and resources, smaller universities typically rely on a limited number of niche alliances. Full article

Mapping Research Trends on Intestinal Permeability in Irritable Bowel Syndrome with a Focus on Nutrition: A Bibliometric Analysis

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a complex gastrointestinal disorder characterized by chronic abdominal pain and altered bowel habits, often linked to disruptions in intestinal barrier function. Increased intestinal permeability plays a key role in IBS pathogenesis, affecting immune responses, gut microbiota, and inflammation. This study conducts a bibliometric analysis to explore global research trends on intestinal permeability in IBS, focusing on key contributors, collaboration networks, and thematic shifts, particularly the interplay between the intestinal barrier, gut microbiota, and dietary components. A total of 411 articles were retrieved from Scopus, with 232 studies analyzed using Bibliometrix in R. To optimize screening, ASReview, a machine learning tool, was employed, utilizing the Naïve Bayes algorithm combined with Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) for adaptive ranking of articles by relevance. This approach significantly improved screening step efficacy. The analysis highlights growing research interest, with China and the USA as leading contributors. Key themes include the role of gut microbiota in modulating permeability, the impact of dietary components (fiber, probiotics, bioactive compounds) on tight junction integrity, and the exploration of therapeutic agents. Emerging studies suggest integrating gut barrier modulation with nutritional and microbiome-targeted strategies for IBS management. This study provides a comprehensive overview of research on intestinal permeability in IBS, mapping its evolution and identifying major trends. By highlighting key contributors and thematic areas, it offers insights to guide future investigations into the interplay between gut permeability, diet, and microbiota, advancing understanding of IBS pathophysiology and management.
