Background: Anaemia in adolescents can be influenced by parasitic infections, systemic inflammation, and nutritional status. Objective: To determine whether C-reactive protein (CRP), nutritional status, and infection with Ascaris lumbricoides, Giardia lamblia, or Trichuris trichiura are associated with anaemia in adolescent athletes from Tacna compared to non-athletes. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 250 male football players aged 13–18 years and 150 age-matched non-athletes. Haemoglobin, haematocrit, ferritin, serum iron, CRP, and parasitic status were measured; mean comparisons and logistic regression were applied. Results: Anaemia was more prevalent among athletes than non-athletes (30% vs. 18%; p < 0.001). Infected athletes showed lower haemoglobin (11.9 ± 1.1 g/dL) and higher CRP (5.0 ± 1.9 mg/L) levels compared to non-infected athletes (13.8 ± 1.0 g/dL and 2.2 ± 1.1 mg/L; p < 0.001). Logistic regression identified CRP as an independent predictor of anaemia (adjusted OR = 1.20; 95% CI: 1.08–1.38; p < 0.001), while parasitic infections showed no direct association after adjustment. Underweight status was associated with a higher prevalence of anaemia (36%). Conclusions: Systemic inflammation emerged as the main factor associated with anaemia in this population, with parasitic infections contributing indirectly by increasing inflammation. Periodic deworming, iron supplementation, and CRP monitoring are recommended to reduce the burden of anaemia in adolescent athletes from endemic regions. Full article

There have been some studies investigating the effects of air pollutants on male football players, but few have examined the gender-specific impact of air pollution on the athletic performance of female football players. This research gap limits the development of tailored training and competition strategies. Here, generalized mixed modeling was employed to assess the effects of main ambient air pollutants, i.e., particulate matter less than 2.5 μm (PM2.5), ozone (O3), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and carbon monoxide (CO), on athletic performance indicators (total movement distance (TMD), jogging distance (JD), and walking distance (WD)) among 14 female football players during 16 matches in the 2020 season of the Chinese Football Association Women’s Super League. Our findings indicate a significant negative association between the O3 concentration and athletic performance, with fixed effect coefficients of −22.426 ± 8.889 for TMD, −10.817 ± 3.697 for JD, and −6.943 ± 3.265 for WD. The NO2 concentration was significantly correlated with both TMD and JD, while PM2.5, SO2, and CO concentrations had minimal or negligible effects. Additionally, aerobic fitness was reduced as the O3 concentration increased. These results provide valuable insights for optimizing gender-specific training and competition strategies under varying air quality conditions, offering a basis for more targeted health and performance interventions in professional female football players. This study aimed to examine whether managerial changes and their training methodology influence the physical attributes of soccer players and determine if these changes significantly impact the overall physical performance of the team. Twenty-seven male elite-level football players competing in the Eastern Mediterranean region (age: 28.12 ± 5.5 years, height: 179.3 ± 6.25 cm, body mass: 75.8 ± 6.6 kg) participated in this study. To analyze the impact of managerial changes on elite football players’ physical performance, this study evaluated and compared physical attributes during weekly microcycles and official games across three different coaching regimes over an entire season. Data were collected using a 10 Hz GPS tracking technology and included the following external load (EL) parameters: total distance, high metabolic load distance, high-speed running, sprint distance, accelerations, and decelerations. A one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was utilized to assess differences in physical performance across the three coaching methods. Significant differences were evident in high metabolic load distance during games [F(2,27) = 7.59, p < 0.05]. High-speed running distance also varied significantly across the three coaching regimes, both during training sessions [F(2,27) = 5.89, p < 0.05] and games [F(2,27) = 4.31, p < 0.05]. Furthermore, sprint distance showed significant differences during training [F(2,27) = 4.62, p < 0.05] and games [F(2,27) = 3.37, p < 0.05]. The findings of this study suggest that managerial changes can have a significant effect on the physical performance of soccer players. The results highlight the importance of aligning coaching strategies with physical conditioning techniques for optimizing performance. These findings provide a deeper understanding of the potential benefits and risks associated with managerial changes in professional soccer. Nevertheless, a limitation in this study is that all metrics of EL were interpreted as absolute values rather than relative-based threshold values, which may affect the interpretation of the players’ physical capacities. Body image is understood as a social construction acquired over the years that is generated as people learn behaviors and relate to each other in the search of their own identity. The aim of this research is to identify the personal and contextual factors which may influence the positive social, negative social, and self-concept dimensions of the social construction of body image on boys and girls from fifth and sixth grades of Primary Education by developing a descriptive exploratory study. For the sample, 719 pupils of fifth grade and sixth grade from Primary Education were selected to develop this research; 373 of them were boys (51.9%) and 340 girls (47.3%), with 6 lost samples. The main results of this research suggested associations between the lack of physical activity, the increase in BMI, and the increase in the number of siblings who worried more about body perception. Likewise, football stands out after detecting links between the practice of this sport and influences on body perception and self-perception. Full article

College-to-NFL Stadium Turf Transitions as a Risk Factor for Lower Extremity Non-Contact Injuries in Rookie Players: A 13-Year Cohort Analysis

Background/Objectives: Lower extremity non-contact injuries (LE-NCIs) pose a significant burden on the National Football League (NFL), with ongoing debates regarding playing surface safety. The stressful college-to-professional transition period for rookies, which can include adapting to new playing surfaces, may influence injury susceptibility. This study aimed to determine whether the transition in a home stadium turf type (natural grass, artificial, and hybrid) from the final college season to the rookie NFL season impacts LE-NCI likelihood. Methods: A retrospective cohort study analyzed 826 first and second-round NFL draft picks from 2012 to 2024. Data on college/NFL home surfaces (defining six transition types), position group, college training surface access, and rookie season LE-NCIs were collected from public sources. Competing risk analysis was used to estimate the cumulative LE-NCI incidence. Multivariable logistic regression assessed the association between turf transition and LE-NCI risk, adjusting for position, draft cohort, and college training access. Results: During their rookie season, 21.2% (175/826) of players sustained an LE-NCI. Skill position players had significantly higher adjusted odds of LE-NCI compared to hybrid players (AOR = 1.88; 95% CI: 1.20–2.97; p = 0.006). No specific turf transition category showed a statistically significant association with LE-NCI risk compared to the Grass-to-Grass reference in adjusted models. College training surface access was also not significantly associated with risk (AOR = 0.97; 95% CI: 0.65–1.45; p = 0.874). Cumulative LE-NCI incidence reached 33.1% by season end, with risk accelerating between weeks 4 and 10. Conclusions: Home stadium turf-type transition from college to the NFL was not significantly associated with LE-NCI risk in this rookie cohort, suggesting that surface transitions may not be a primary risk factor during the professional transition period. However, our analysis revealed significant position-dependent injury patterns (skill players: AOR = 1.88) and a temporal clustering of injuries between weeks 4 and 10, indicating that rookie LE-NCI prevention strategies should prioritize position-specific interventions and enhanced monitoring during the early- to mid-season high-risk period rather than surface transition-based approaches. Objectives: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between acute and chronic loads, and the fatigue response within male elite professional football players. Design: 40-week longitudinal study across the 2021–2022 season in the English Championship. Methods: Twenty-three outfield football players had workload measured using global positioning system (Distance, High-Intensity Distance and Sprint Distance) and perceived exertion. Load-response was measured via a perceived wellbeing questionnaire, counter-movement jump (CMJ) and salivary immunoglobulin A. Results: General estimating equation models identified 18 significant interactions between workload and load-response markers. Thirteen significant interactions were found between acute and chronic workloads and CMJ variables, jump height, eccentric duration and flight contraction time. A poor CMJ was observed when acute sprint workload was >+1 standard deviation and chronic distance increased. However, when chronic perceived exertion increased, and acute sprint workload was >+1 standard deviation an advantageous response was detected on counter movement jump variables. The S-IgA response to acute and chronic workload was more variable; when chronic loads were >+1 standard deviation above mean values and acute workload increased, salivary immunoglobulin A was both suppressed and elevated depending on the interacting acute variable. Higher chronic workload was associated with better perceived wellbeing, even when acute workload was >+1 standard deviation above the mean. Conclusion: In general, low chronic workloads and acute spikes in workload were associated with poorer neuromuscular and immune function. Furthermore, CMJ performance and perceived wellbeing improved when chronic workloads were higher, despite the occurrence of acute spikes in workload. Full article

Background: To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the different injury mechanisms of the hamstring muscle group have not been defined in detail in men’s professional football. For this reason, the main aim of this study is to determine the mechanisms and contextual patterns associated with hamstring muscle group injuries in professional male football players in competition, using a systematic video analysis method. Methods: Video recordings of official matches from two consecutive seasons (2017/18 and 2018/19) of the Spanish First Division of Football (LaLigaTM) were used for this research. The process to determine the moment of injury was carried out by two independent evaluators using an ad hoc observation tool and, subsequently, all relevant data were collected to detail the specific patterns of injury events observed. Results: In total, 78 cases of hamstring injuries were included for the final analysis of specific patterns. The most outstanding results were that, (1) although the sprint-related pattern (SP) is predominate (54%; 42 cases), the combined pattern 2 (COMB2) is another mechanism that appears frequently (26%; 20 cases), (2) within the SP, curved runs show a greater number of cases (52% of SP; 22 cases), (3) the majority of the injuries occur without contact (83%; 65 cases) and with the presence of the ball (88%; 69 cases), and finally, (4) the most injured positions were fullbacks/wingbacks (28%; 22 cases), central defenders (27%; 21 cases), and wingers/wide midfielders (23%; 18 cases). Conclusions: The SP remains the most frequent pattern in hamstring injuries; however, the present study presents other mechanisms that are also quite common and should be considered, such as curvilinear runs in SP and COMB2. Air pollution is an escalating global concern with significant implications for human health and athletic performance. This narrative review synthesizes and critically compares the current literature on the impact of air pollution on health and football performance, elucidates the physiological mechanisms involved, and evaluates available mitigation strategies. Comparative studies consistently demonstrate that football players—who frequently engage in high-intensity outdoor exercise—are particularly susceptible to the harmful effects of airborne pollutants such as particulate matter (PM), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), and carbon monoxide (CO). These pollutants bypass natural respiratory defenses due to increased pulmonary ventilation during exercise, reaching deeper lung regions and triggering oxidative stress, inflammation, and impaired lung function. Evidence across studies indicates that poor air quality is associated with decreased football performance, including reduced distance covered, fewer high-intensity efforts, elevated physiological strain, and diminished training adaptation. Long-term exposure exacerbates respiratory conditions, suppresses immune function, and heightens the risk of illness and injury. Furthermore, comparative genetic research highlights inter-individual variability in pollution sensitivity, with specific gene variants conferring either increased vulnerability or resilience to adverse effects. This review also explores practical and emerging mitigation strategies—such as timing training to avoid peak pollution, utilizing air quality monitoring and antioxidant-rich diets, and promoting sustainable infrastructure—to safeguard athlete health and optimize performance. Novel approaches including respiratory training, anti-smog masks, indoor sessions, and personalized recovery protocols offer additional protection and recovery support. Full article

Background: Previous studies have tested the association between the COL5A1 rs12722 polymorphism and the risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. Overall, their results are contradictory because most studies used relatively small samples and data from ACL ruptures during sport activities have been mixed with ruptures suffered in non-sporting contexts. Objective: To examine the association between the COL5A1 rs12722 polymorphism and the prevalence of ACL rupture in a homogeneous sample of professional male football players. Methods: A total of 268 professional male football players participated in this study. The COL5A1 rs12722 genotype (CC, CT and TT) was obtained from each player using genomic DNA samples obtained from a buccal swab and measured with PCR RFLP. Players with history of ACL rupture during their professional career were identified by the medical staff of each team. Only ACL injuries obtained during football exposure were considered for this investigation. In this process, we identified 49 ACL ruptures pertaining to 43 players suffered between 2013 and 2024. The situational pattern (i.e., attacking or defending, type of football action, moment of the season, match/training exposure, etc.) was also obtained for each injury. A sub-analysis of non-contact ACL ruptures was conducted, as these injuries are more likely to be influenced by genetic factors. Results: The distribution of genotypes was similar in players with history of ACL rupture (n = 43; CC/CT/TT, 24.4/48.9/26.7%) and with no history of ACL rupture (n = 225; 25.3/49.8/24.9%; p = 0.973). Overall, the prevalence of players with history of ACL injury was 16.2% for the whole group of CC players (11 out of 68 players), 16.4% for whole group of CT (22 out of 135 players) and 15.2% for the group of TT players (10 out of 66 players; p = 0.973). However, the COL5A1 rs12722 genotype affected the dominance of the injured leg (p = 0.012), the type of action that originated the injury (p = 0.047), and the distribution of non-contact ACL injuries depending on the time of the match (p = 0.020). Specifically, CC players suffered ruptures predominantly in the dominant leg, when landing or reaching (offensive actions) and in the last 15 min of the match (all p < 0.050). On the contrary, TT players had ACL ruptures predominantly in their non-dominant leg, when pressing the opponent (defensive actions) and in the first 15 min of the match (all p < 0.050). Conclusion: There was no association between any of the COL5A1 rs12722 genotypes and the overall prevalence of ACL rupture in professional football players. However, the COL5A1 rs12722 polymorphism appeared to influence specific characteristics of the injury, such as the type of action leading to the rupture and the timing within the match, suggesting a potential genetic contribution to injury susceptibility. Sports participation according to socioeconomic status (SES) was related to children in high-income Western countries. This study aimed to examine whether family or neighborhood-level SES is associated with current and continued organized sports participation, including the types of sports, among Japanese primary school children from preschool onward. The participants consisted of 269 girls, 255 boys, and their parents. Data on the type of sports participation at the current school or preschool, parental employment, and education were collected by questionnaire. Neighborhood-level SES was evaluated by the average annual income within 4 km of each school. The odds of sports participation was higher among children with mothers identifying as housewives or those with mothers employed part-time. Among girls, the odds of continued sports participation were lower if their mothers were junior high school or high school graduates or junior college/vocational school graduates. The odds of sports type like swimming were higher for children whose mothers had part-time jobs. Lower average community income was associated with lower participation in football and higher participation in baseball. These findings suggest that mothers’ employment and academic background are important correlates of sports participation for children, with variations observed by sport type and gender. Full article

Football is a low-scoring sport where a single goal can determine a team’s success. Understanding shot effectiveness and goalkeeper performance is crucial for optimizing match success. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of shots and goalkeeper interventions by identifying the most favorable areas on the field and within the goal. An observational notational analysis was conducted on 15,266 on-target shots from five major European leagues (Premier League, LaLiga, Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue 1) during the 2022/2023 season. Data were extracted from FotMob and analyzed in SPSS using Pearson’s chi-square test (χ2) and adjusted residuals (AR) to determine significant patterns. Field and goal zones were divided based on previous studies, with the penalty area receiving further subdivisions due to its relevance to the analysis. The results indicated that match context, target areas within the goal, field zones, and previously identified high-effectiveness areas significantly influenced shot success (χ2 < 0.001). Similarly, a significant association was found between the shooting foot and the side of attack (χ2 < 0.001), while the body part used did not significantly affect the outcome (χ2 = 0.077). Understanding these patterns helps coaches and players optimize team performance. Future studies should analyze additional seasons to confirm these results. Full article

There is increasing concern that head injuries in Association Football (or soccer) may lead to adverse health outcomes. The aim of this study was to determine whether head impacts or injuries are associated with an increased risk of neurodegenerative disease. We performed a systematic search using PubMed, Embase, and Ovid (up to April 2025). Studies included investigated neurodegenerative diseases in football in comparison to control athletic and general populations. Data were extracted according to PRISMA guidelines. Studies with an odds ratio (OR) were included in the meta-analysis. A total of ten studies were included in this review, of which nine were suitable for meta-analysis from eight cohorts. The risk for developing any neurodegeneration was 1.69 OR (95%CI 1.11 to 2.59; p = 0.01); for Dementia, it was 2.16 OR (95%CI 1.60 to 2.93; p < 0.01; for Motor Neurone Disease (MND), it was 1.39 OR (95%CI 0.67 to 2.53; p = 0.21); for Parkinson’s Disease (PD), it was 1.14 OR (95%CI 0.55 to 2.89; p = 0.79). Heterogeneity was reduced following the removal of two studies and the revised risk scores for any neurodegenerative disease; Dementia increased, with that for MND reaching significance, 1.81 OR (95%CI 1.22 to 2.30; p = 0.01), but there remained no association with PD. Evidence suggests that professional football significantly increases the odds of neurodegenerative disease. Full article

Background/Objectives: The ROM-SPORT is a test battery for assessing flexibility that measures the range of motion (ROM) in the sport. Restricted or optimal ROM is associated with an increased risk of injury or improved athletic performance, respectively. The aim of the present study was to determine the normative values of the lower limb’s flexibility profile by ROM assessment in female football players. Methods: Lower-limb flexibility (11 ROM tests) was measured using the ROM-SPORT battery in 142 female football players (19.42 ± 4.45 years). The tests were performed at the beginning of the training sessions in the first two weeks of the pre-season. Standardized Z-scores (on a scale of 0 to 100 [T-score]) were calculated from the mean and standard deviation to classify the ROM of each movement into three qualitative categories (poor [>−3 to −2], average or normal [−1 to 1; 68.2%], and optimal [1 to >3]) and a traffic light system to facilitate interpretation of the results. Results: The results show normal (or average) ROM values at 32–37° for ankle dorsiflexion with the knee extended; 37–43° for ankle dorsiflexion with the knee flexed; 46–54° for hip internal rotation; 54–61° for hip external rotation; 31–37° for hip adduction; 70–76° for hip abduction with the hip flexed; 41–45° for hip abduction with the hip neutral; 135–141° for hip flexion; 73–82° for hip flexion with the knee extended; 15–21° for hip extension; 121–132° for knee flexion. The normative data presented in this study can be utilized by researchers and practitioners in the women’s football league in a variety of ways, provided similar data collection methods are used. Conclusions: Flexibility training is recommended to overcome normal or average ROM and optimize athletic performance with lower injury risk in female football players. Full article

Relationship Between Refractive Error, Visual Acuity, and Postural Stability in Elite Football Players

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between visual system parameters (visual acuity and refractive error) and postural balance under controlled conditions in elite football players. Visual acuity (monocular and binocular) and refractive errors were assessed in 34 male athletes using retinoscopy and subjective refraction. Postural stability was assessed with the Cyber-Sabots™ platform, recording the center of pressure (CoP) metrics, including sway amplitude, velocity, and distribution area. Visual and postural parameter correlations were assessed using Pearson’s test (p < 0.05). Athletes demonstrated good binocular visual acuity (−0.03 ± 0.09 logMAR) and were predominantly emmetropic. Visual acuity and postural parameters showed significant negative correlations, whereby visual acuity was associated with reduced CoP displacement (r = −0.352) and sway area (r = −0.367), indicating enhanced stability. Hyperopia and oblique astigmatism were moderately correlated with increased sway (r = 0.343) and antero-posterior sway amplitude in the sagittal plane (r = 0.324). Anisometropia showed moderately negative correlations with antero-posterior control (r = −0.421), suggesting a disruptive effect on postural stability. The postural analysis showed adaptations characteristic of football players, including anterior body inclination, increased forefoot loading, and medio-lateral sway. Romberg’s quotients highlighted significant visual input reliance for maintaining postural balance. Visual acuity, refractive errors, and interocular refractive asymmetries significantly influence postural stability in elite football players. These results support incorporating visual function assessment into training and injury prevention in elite sports. Full article

Background: A comprehensive understanding of variations in physical attributes both between and within young players is crucial for accurately identifying talent based on physical performance. This study aimed to compare maximum strength, jump, and sprint test results among young soccer players from different age categories and playing positions. Secondarily, this study aimed to analyze the association between maximum strength, jump, and sprint performances. Methods: A total of 103 players were categorized as U23, U19, U17, and U16. The players were placed into these age categories based on their football abilities. All participants completed standardized warm-ups, and testing procedures followed protocols established in previous studies. Results: Significant differences were found between age categories regarding the Isometric Mid-Thigh Pull (p < 0.001; η2p = 0.33), Countermovement Jump (CMJ) (p < 0.001; η2p = 0.50), Squat Jump (SJ) (p < 0.001; η2p = 0.29), and sprint (p < 0.001; η2p = 0.30) tests. No significant differences were detected in Broad Jump results between age categories. Moreover, no significant differences were observed in any physical capacities between playing positions. Furthermore, significant moderate-to-strong correlations (r = 0.30–0.86) were observed between all physical tests. Conclusions: Age categories can distinguish soccer players’ performance in different physical tests while no differences were observed between playing positions. Similar magnitude correlations were observed across all tests with only the CMJ and SJ being strongly correlated. Coaches and strength and conditioning professionals should apply a variety of tests to assess different physical qualities since they have different patterns between age categories. Full article
