The practices followed in the preservation of medieval castles in Latvia during the Soviet occupation period have not yet been comprehensively examined. This article seeks to elucidate this issue by considering a single case study—Turaida Castle. From the 13th until the mid-16th century, Turaida Castle functioned as one of the principal residences of the Archbishop of Riga. From the 17th century onward, its medieval fortifications progressively deteriorated. Between 1952 and 1991, during the Soviet occupation period, the ruins of Turaida Castle became the subject of major restoration, reconstruction, and conservation projects, as well as systematic archaeological investigation. These preservation efforts were impeded by the deteriorated condition of the original brickwork and by the limited availability of appropriate methodologies and theoretical literature. Nonetheless, owing to the scope and continuity of these interventions, Turaida Castle has become one of the most frequently visited heritage sites in Latvia, attracting both international and domestic visitors from the 1960s to the present. The article outlines the principal achievements of the site’s preservation practices and identifies key challenges and shortcomings that have emerged throughout the process. Full article

After nearly two decades of developments in Historic/Heritage Building Information Modeling (HBIM), the field has reached a stage of maturity that calls for a critical reassessment of its evolution, achievements, and remaining challenges. Digital representation has become a central component of contemporary heritage conservation, enabling advanced methods for analysis, management, and communication. This review examines the maturation of HBIM as a comprehensive framework that integrates extended reality (XR), artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), semantic segmentation and Digital Twin (DT). Six major research domains that have shaped recent progress are outlined: (1) the application of HBIM to restoration and conservation workflows; (2) the expansion of public engagement through XR, virtual museums, and serious games; (3) the stratigraphic documentation of building archaeology, historical phases, and material decay; (4) data-exchange mechanisms and interoperability with open formats and Common Data Environments (CDEs); (5) strategies for modeling geometric and semantic complexity using traditional, applied, and AI-driven approaches; and (6) the emergence of heritage DT as dynamic, semantically enriched systems integrating real-time and lifecycle data. A comparative assessment of international case studies and bibliometric trends (2015–2025) illustrates how HBIM is transforming proactive and data-informed conservation practice. The review concludes by identifying persistent gaps and outlining strategic directions for the next phase of research and implementation. Full article

Recent investigations at the Cortijo de las Mezquitas complex (Antequera–Campillos–Sierra de Yeguas, Province of Málaga, Andalusia, Spain) have focused on clarifying the construction history of the monument and on contextualising the presence of an early medieval rural mosque, a rare example within the Iberian Peninsula. The reassessment of the complex, conducted within the methodological framework of Building Archaeology, has made it possible to describe the constructive characteristics of the building with greater precision, both in terms of its architectural design and its construction process. This approach has enabled a more detailed definition of the technological context employed in the original construction phase, as well as of the chronological range to which it belongs, spanning between the late ninth and early tenth centuries. Subsequent phases of reoccupation and transformation, particularly from the sixteenth century onwards, were also documented, although the dating of some interventions remains uncertain. This research provides a fundamental framework for the historical contextualisation of the monument within the history of al-Andalus and highlights the urgent need for its conservation, restoration, and valorisation. This study examines the three pagodas of the Mireuksa Temple Site—the West, East, and Wooden Pagodas—to analyze how material evidence, cultural memory, and representation shape authenticity in architectural heritage. The research aims to clarify how different conservation strategies, including authentic restoration, speculative reconstruction, and digital mediation, influence the construction and communication of cultural memory. Methodologically, the study employs a comparative case analysis grounded in archival research, archaeological records, field observations, and interpretive analysis of digital media practices. The findings indicate three distinct patterns: (1) the West Pagoda demonstrates that evidence-based restoration can maintain both material and historical authenticity; (2) the East Pagoda shows that reconstructions based on limited evidence tend to generate visually convincing yet historically uncertain representations; and (3) the Wooden Pagoda illustrates that digital mediation can effectively communicate lost heritage, but only when its speculative nature is made transparent to the public. The most significant result is that authenticity cannot be defined solely by material survival but must be evaluated through the ethical and transparent communication of historical uncertainty. Based on these insights, the study proposes a conceptual framework of “memory authenticity,” offering heritage practitioners a tool for assessing restoration choices in contexts where architectural evidence is fragmentary or lost. The findings also provide practical implications for heritage management, including evidence-based decision-making, ethically informed digital interpretation, and responsible presentation of reconstructed or hypothetical forms. This paper presents a knowledge-based and interpretative model for the conservation of the House of Arianna, located in the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, developed within the CHANGES project, Spoke 6—History, Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage. The research focused on two critical components of the site: the free-standing peristyle columns and the mosaic and frescoed surfaces preserved in situ. This workflow yielded a high-resolution digital model, analytical condition maps, and diagnostic datasets that directly inform conservation decisions. The results show that the columns exhibit internal discontinuities and weaknesses at their joints, a condition linked to heterogeneous construction techniques which increases the risk of drum slippage under wind and seismic loading. The mosaics display a marked loss of tesserae in exposed sectors over recent years, driven by moisture ingress, biological growth and mechanical stress. These findings support the adoption of low-impact, reversible measures, embedded within a prevention-first strategy based on planned conservation. The study formalizes a replicable methodology that aligns diagnostics, monitoring and conservation planning. By linking ‘skin’ and ‘structure’ within a unified interpretative matrix, the approach enhances both structural safety and material legibility. The workflow proposed here offers transferable guidance for the sustainable preservation and inclusive interpretation of exposed archaeological ensembles in the Vesuvian context and beyond. Limited accessibility, mountainous geography, and seismic conditions have posed challenges to both the preservation and the transmission of knowledge inherited from the Incas. Therefore, this research aims to analyze the ancestral Inca construction systems and their relationship with the Inca worldview through an architectural and structural study of the archaeological site of Choquequirao, located in Cusco, Peru. The research integrates geographic, climatic, spatial, functional, and constructive dimensions, applying digital 3D modeling tools (AutoCAD 2025, SketchUp 2024, and Sun-Path 2024) to assess the orientation, stability, and symbolic configuration of the main sectors. The results of the functional and constructive analysis reveal that Choquequirao incorporates adaptive principles in response to seismic and microclimatic conditions, as well as constructive typologies planned from an integral architectural perspective. These elements allow a clearer understanding of the spatial organization of the site and its cultural significance. Moreover, the study covers ten sectors distributed across 1800 hectares. The upper sector (4 ha) stands out for its architecture and political–ceremonial function; the lower sector (4 ha) includes ritual, administrative, residential, and storage areas for camelids; the southern sector (5 ha) contains the ushnu and priestly enclosures on terraces; and the eastern (7 ha) and western (2 ha) slopes integrate agricultural and residential uses. The study of Choquequirao highlights its complex organization and addresses contemporary challenges in terms of conservation and development. These findings provide essential insights for future restoration and conservation strategies that respect traditional construction systems and their environmental adaptation. Full article

The research empirically evaluates ancient earth construction techniques through the analysis of archaeological adobe samples from Tell Zurghul/Nigin, south-eastern Iraq, dating from the mid-5th to mid-3rd millennium BCE. Simple, non-standardised empirical field tests were employed to obtain preliminary material characterisations, valuable for pilot assessments and gaining further significance when compared with quantitative analytical results. Their application evaluates the functionality of these tests while integrating archaeological insights with material science, underscoring the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration in earthen heritage conservation. Sixteen samples—fifteen archaeological and one modern—were analysed to assess raw material composition, grain size, clay behaviour, organic content, cohesion in wet and dry states, and surface adhesion. Results demonstrate notable homogeneity in material composition across the time span, primarily fine sands with minimal clay or silt. This suggests favourable drainage, minimal shrinkage, and reduced cracking but limited cohesion, implying a potential need for stabilisers such as plastic clays or fibres in construction. These findings inform conservative strategies for the preservation and restoration of earthen structures at the site. Full article

UNESCO landscapes, as socio-ecological systems of high natural and cultural value, must be well managed and protected for future generations. The study area of the present research includes the UNESCO site of the Etruscan necropolis of Cerveteri (Central Italy). The main aims of the study are as follows: (1) to compare landscape dynamics of the study area from 1954 to 2023; (2) to assess the potential positive effects of the recognition of the area as a UNESCO site in terms of mitigating landscape change and fragmentation; (3) to identify potential sustainable conservation actions aimed at promoting the connectivity between the site and its landscape context. There was a change in the land cover in the entire study area from 1954 to 2023, which was 23%, with different dynamics at different times, while fragmentation was evident in the UNESCO buffer. This is particularly a concern because it includes the ancient Etruscan city, and it is not subject to adequate protection measures. Finally, this research identified crucial management strategies, including the expansion of the core area to include the ancient city; the restoration of naturalistic connections (e.g., the ancient path) between the city, necropolis, and natural context; and the reforestation of sensitive archaeological areas to mitigate landscape fragmentation. The restoration of iron finds is still a particularly complex area within the science of archaeological conservation, as severe signs of corrosion occur from the moment of recovery and the associated radical change in environmental parameters. The results of this study show that it is possible to create three-dimensional models of an iron find using non-invasive µCT examinations to identify the different layers and phases of corrosion based on mineralogical investigations and thus to assess the state of preservation of the iron object. The resulting visibility of the corrosion zones provides an important basis for further treatment of iron artefacts after recovery (packaging, desalination, storage, etc.), since the goal is the long-term preservation of cultural heritage made of iron. During the processes of excavation, restoration, and conservation of archaeological sites, it is common practice to perform physical and chemical characterization of the site materials. This is carried out to determine the best methods and materials for conserving and preserving the site. For this reason, techniques such as infrared spectroscopy and elemental analysis by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) are primarily used for chemical characterization, while mechanical tests such as the uniaxial compression test and hardness tests are used for physical and mechanical characterization. However, a common limitation is obtaining samples for destructive physical tests, such as compression tests, due to their invaluable cultural value. To address this problem, this work proposes the mechanical characterization of the material through nanoindentation. This technique requires a smaller sample size and can be performed in a timely manner by observing the resistance of each mineralogical phase present in the material. Thus, a preliminary predictive model of mechanical resistance is proposed based on the composition observed in the samples from the archaeological site of Cerro de los Remedios, located in the municipality of Comonfort, Guanajuato, Mexico. The samples were characterized using infrared spectroscopy, XRF, XRD, and SEM-EDS. The results indicate that the stone (caliche) is formed from 95.6–93% micrite calcite; 2.51–0.42% aluminosilicate; 3.14–1.89% high-calcium aluminosilicate; and 3.43–2.39 quartz or amorphous SiO2. The proposed correlation models were adjusted to a linear function, a second-order polynomial, and a logarithmic function. In the M2–linear model, the non-linear effects generated by variables such as texture, porosity, phase adhesion, cement type, and cracks or discontinuities were not considered. In this model the best prediction of the experimental data was obtained within a variation of ±15%. Full article

Artificial intelligence technologies, particularly machine learning and computer vision, are being increasingly utilized to preserve, restore, and create immersive virtual experiences with cultural artifacts and sites, thus aiding in conserving cultural heritage and making it accessible to a global audience. This paper examines the performance of Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN), especially Style-Based Generator Architecture (StyleGAN), as a deep learning approach for producing realistic images of Egyptian monuments. We used Sigmoid loss for Language–Image Pre-training (SigLIP) as a unique image–text alignment system to guide monument generation through semantic elements. We also studied truncation methods to regulate the generated image noise and identify the most effective parameter settings based on architectural representation versus diverse output creation. An improved discriminator design that combined noise addition with squeeze-and-excitation blocks and a modified MinibatchStdLayer produced 27.5% better Fréchet Inception Distance performance than the original discriminator models. Moreover, differential evolution for latent-space optimization reduced alignment mistakes during specific monument construction tasks by about 15%. We checked a wide range of truncation values from 0.1 to 1.0 and found that somewhere between 0.4 and 0.7 was the best range because it allowed for good accuracy while retaining many different architectural elements. Our findings indicate that specific model optimization strategies produce superior outcomes by creating better-quality and historically correct representations of diverse Egyptian monuments. Thus, the developed technology may be instrumental in generating educational and archaeological visualization assets while adding virtual tourism capabilities. Full article

Vegetation plays a multifaceted role in the enhancement and conservation of archaeological sites, functioning not only as an aesthetic element but also as a core component of landscape architecture practice. This review traces the historical evolution of vegetation management, though the lens of landscape architecture, highlighting its potential as a design and planning tool for historical interpretation and sustainable integration of heritage sites into broader contexts. From Romantic landscaping ideals to modern interdisciplinary conservation frameworks, the review draws on key milestones such as the Athens and Venice Charters, and examines case studies like Rome’s Passeggiata Archeologica, the Acropolis slopes, Ruffenhofen Park, and Campo Lameiro. These examples illustrate how landscape architectural approaches can use vegetation to reconstruct lost architectural forms, enhance visitor engagement, and provide ecosystem functions. The article also addresses challenges related to historical authenticity, species selection, and ecological performance, arguing for future strategies that integrate archaeological sites into dynamic, living heritage systems, through collaborative, ecologically informed design. The possibility of collecting new archaeological elements useful in reconstructing the dynamics of population, production and commercial activities in the Bronze Age at the edge of the central-southern Venice Lagoon was provided between 2023 and 2024 thanks to an intervention of rescue archaeology planned during some water restoration works in the Giare–Mira area. Three small excavations revealed, approximately one meter below the current surface and covered by alluvial sediments, a rather complex palimpsest dated to the late Recent and the early Final Bronze Age. Three large circular pits containing exclusively purified grey/blue clay and very rare inclusions of vegetable fibres, and many large, fired clay vessels’ bases, walls and rims clustered in concentrated assemblages and random deposits point to potential on-site production. Two pyro-technological structures, one characterised by a sub-circular combustion chamber and a long inlet channel/praefurnium, and the second one with a sub-rectangular shape with arched niches along its southern side, complete the exceptional context here discovered. To analyse the relationship between the site and the natural sedimentary succession and to evaluate the possible extension of this site, three electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and low-frequency electromagnetic (FDEM) measurements were collected. Several manual core drillings associated with remote sensing integrated the geophysical data in the analysis of the geomorphological evolution of this area, clearly related to different phases of fluvial activity, in a framework of continuous relative sea level rise. The typology and chronology of the archaeological structures and materials, currently undergoing further analyses, support the interpretation of the site as a late Recent/early Final Bronze Age productive site. Geophysical and geomorphological data provide information on the palaeoenvironmental setting, suggesting that the site was located on a fine-grained, stable alluvial plain at a distance of a few kilometres from the lagoon shore to the south-east and the course of the Brenta River to the north. The archaeological site was buried by fine-grained floodplain deposits attributed to the Brenta River. The good preservation of the archaeological structures buried by fluvial sediments suggests that the site was abandoned soon before sedimentation started. Full article

Evidence Synthesis and Knowledge Integration for Sustainable Peatland Management

Peatland research has expanded rapidly in the last two decades encompassing a diverse, multi-disciplinary evidence base, as countries seek to manage this resource sustainably along with meeting climate and biodiversity targets. There is growing global interest in the role of peatlands in carbon and water cycles, leading to more interdisciplinary research that applies ecosystem services and other integrative frameworks to generate knowledge and provide guidance for action. These trends have been replicated in Ireland with increasing research in peatland science, applied work on these degraded ecosystems, and a growing interest from civil society, landowners, and communities in the stewardship of this resource. This paper presents evidence-based insights from over two decades of Irish peatland research, with practical lessons for peatland policy and management in other national contexts. Analyses of the evidence from the literature, specialist expertise, and stakeholder knowledge were carried out under ten themes: biodiversity, soil, climate change, water, archaeology and palaeoenvironment, technology and mapping, society and culture, management, growing media and policy and law. The research identified four foundational pillars (accountability, longevity, equity and holistic knowledge) as critical to achieving sustainable peatland management in Ireland, with broader application to other regions. Peatland restoration is widely recognised across research disciplines as a key tool to meet regulatory targets related to climate, biodiversity, and water quality, while also delivering societal benefits. The findings of this research provide accessible, reliable and up-to-date evidence for sustainable peatland management. This study addresses a critical global knowledge gap by developing a novel, interdisciplinary evidence synthesis framework—applied here to Ireland but replicable worldwide—that systematically integrates 20 years of multi-disciplinary peatland research, expert insights, and stakeholder perspectives across ten thematic pillars. Authenticity is a core principle in conservation guidelines and a key goal of heritage preservation, especially in Serbia, where many aging objects face ongoing deterioration. The subject of this study is the church within the Blagoveštenje Monastery complex in the Ovčar-Kablar gorge, built using stone from a local quarry at the beginning of the 17th century. The inclination of the structure, observed as progressively increasing over the centuries, raises important concerns regarding its stability. This research focuses on identifying the underlying causes of this phenomenon in order to support its long-term preservation. The methods used the study are long-term in situ observations including analysis, geodetic research, 3D laser imaging, geophysical, geological, archaeological research, evaluation of current condition, determination of structural failures and their cause and monitoring the structural behavior of elements. All methods were carried out in accordance with the definition of rehabilitation measures and the protection of masonry buildings. The main contribution of this study is identifying that the church’s inclination and deviation result from the northern foundation resting on weaker soil and a deeper rock mass compared to the southern side. The research approach and findings presented in this paper can serve as a guide for future endeavors aimed at identifying the causes of deformations and the restoration and structural rehabilitation of masonry buildings as cultural heritage.
