In the medical field, magnesium (Mg) alloys have been widely used due to their excellent antibacterial properties and biodegradability. However, in the marine environment, the antibacterial effect may be greatly attenuated, and consequently, microorganisms in the ocean are likely to adhere to the surface of Mg alloys, resulting in biocorrosion damage, which is really troublesome in the maritime industry and can even be disastrous to the navy. Currently, there is a lack of research on the biocorrosion of Mg alloys that may find important applications in marine engineering. In this paper, the biocorrosion mechanism of the Mg alloy Mg-3Nd-2Gd-Zn-Zr caused by Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris), a typical marine microalga, was studied. The results showed that the biomineralization process in the artificial seawater containing a low concentration of C. vulgaris cells was accelerated compared with that in the abiotic artificial seawater, leading to the deposition of CaCO3 on the surface to inhibit the localized corrosion of the Mg alloy, whereas a high concentration of C. vulgaris cells produced a high content of organic acids at some sites through photosynthesis to significantly accelerate the surface film rupture at some sites and severe localized corrosion there, but meanwhile, it resulted in the formation of a more protective biomineralized film in the other areas to greatly alleviate the corrosion. The contradictory biocorrosion behaviors on the Mg-3Nd-2Gd-Zn-Zr alloy induced by C. vulgaris were finally explained by a mechanism proposed in the paper. Full article

The use of orthodontic microimplants in daily practice is now an indispensable part of orthodontic treatment. Unfortunately, the use of skeletal anchorage is associated with a relatively high risk of loss of microimplant stability because of inflammation developing in the surrounding soft tissues. The aim of this systematic review is to identify possible methods of orthodontic microimplant surface modifications providing antibacterial properties. The PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Reviews databases were searched, and a literature review was conducted. The search was performed between 1 December 2024 and 31 December 2024. The authors used the PICO format to facilitate the search of abstracts and ensure that the relevant components of the question are well defined. The systematic review was written based on the principles detailed in PRISMA. The quality of the papers was assessed based on a tool developed by the authors. Three papers were rated Low Risk of Bias (RoB), four were rated Moderate RoB, and three were rated High RoB. All of the studies presented a method to increase the antibacterial properties of microimplants. More research with a unified methodology is necessary to confirm the effectiveness of the analyzed methods. ZnO, antibiotics, chlorhexidine, silver compounds, selenium, HA, and PEG polymerization plasma represent an interesting perspective for improving the antibacterial properties of orthodontic microimplants. Honey, propolis or royal jelly are considered natural remedies with therapeutic properties since antiquity. Many papers explore the development of antimicrobial biomaterials based on individual bee products, but there is a lack of studies on their synergistic effects. Combining honey, propolis and royal jelly with silver nanoparticles in a biopolymer matrix offers a synergistic strategy to combat antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections. This approach supports progress in wound healing, soft tissue engineering and other domains where elimination of the microorganisms is needed like food packaging. In this study we have obtained antimicrobial films based on bee products and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) incorporated in an alginate–chitosan blend. The novel biomaterials were analyzed by UV-Vis, fluorescence and FTIR spectroscopy or microscopy, SEM and thermal analysis. Antibacterial tests were conducted against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, while the antifungal properties were tested against Candida albicans. The diameters for growth inhibition zones were up to 10 mm for bacterial strains and 8 mm for the fungal strain. Additionally, cytotoxicity assays were performed to evaluate the biocompatibility of the materials, the results indicating that the combination of honey, propolis, royal jelly and AgNPs does not produce synergistic toxicity. Fungal infections are recognized as a global health issue, in particular considering the spread of different forms of resistance to the commonly used antifungal drugs and their involvement in the occurrence of co-infections in hospitalized and immunocompromised patients. In this paper, a small series of hybrid compounds were designed and synthesized by linking the privileged chromone and xanthone scaffolds, endowed with recognized antimicrobial potential, to the tert-butylbenzylamino portion of the antifungal drug butenafine, through selected linkers. The results showed for the xanthone-based compound 3 a promising activity towards C. auris, C. tropicalis, and C. neoformans, for which a high degree of resistance is commonly observed, together with a significant antibacterial potency towards Gram-positive bacteria, such as S. aureus. Considering that compound 3 displayed favorable selectivity and therapeutic indexes (9.1 and >16, respectively), it appeared as a valuable prototype, deserving further hit-to-lead optimization. Globally, the proportion of the consumption of fruits in the human diet shows an increasing trend. However, fruits may incur significant losses during the post-harvest storage and transportation process due to metabolic activities and mechanical damage. Post-harvest coating technology has been proven to be an effective means of reducing quality loss, and it offers the advantages of being environmentally friendly, energy-efficient, and free of chemical residues. This article begins with an introduction to the three main mechanisms of coating preservation, including physical barrier effects, physiological metabolism regulation, and antibacterial and antioxidant effects. Secondly, this paper comprehensively reviews the latest progress of coating application technology in the field of fruit preservation, and summarizes the development of coating application technology in recent years, which is divided into two categories: traditional technology and fiber coating formation technology. Among these, the spraying method in traditional technology and microfluidic spinning technology in fiber coating formation technology are emphasized. This information will help to further develop coating application techniques to improve post-harvest fruit preservation. Full article

In this study, Fe-doped SrTiO3 powders have been synthesized using the sol-gel approach. The effect of the Fe3+ doping on the degradation efficiency of SrTiO3 toward specific pollutants was studied. The obtained samples were characterized using the following techniques: XRD, SEM-EDS, FTIR, UV-Vis, and BET. Subsequently, the samples were tested for degradation of two organic pollutants—tetracycline hydrochloride and Malachite green in distilled water under different light sources—UV light and visible light. The investigated powders exhibited good photocatalytic degradation efficiency against both pollutants. A comparison of the photocatalytic abilities of the samples under different lights has been made, which emphasizes the paper’s novelty. Undoped SrTiO3 exhibited better photocatalytic activity for TCH both under UV and visible light irradiation in comparison to the Fe-doped. The SrTi0.15Fe0.85O3 shows superior photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation for the degradation of MG dye. The antibacterial activity has been tested against two bacterial strains, E. coli ATCC 25922 and P. aeruginosa ATCC 27853. It has been found that the antibacterial efficiency of the Fe-doped sample is greater than compared of the undoped one. Full article

In this paper, titanium oxide nanoparticles (TiO2-NPs) with complex surface topologies were obtained for the first time using simple procedures applied in laser sintering. Based on the obtained nanoparticles and polymethyl methacrylate-like photopolymer resin, a composite material (MPR/TiO2-NPs) for 3D printing was created using the MSLA technology. Products made of the material containing from 0.001 to 0.1% wt. TiO2-NPs didn’t contain internal defects and were less brittle than the resin without nanoparticles. Products made of the MPR/TiO2-NPs material were well polished; after polishing, areas with a variation in the surface profile height of less than 10 nm were found on the surfaces. Nanoparticles in the volume of products made of the material are apparently unevenly distributed; there are alternating areas of micrometer sizes with slightly higher and slightly lower concentrations of nanoparticles. Spectroscopy showed that adding the developed nanoparticles promoted better polymerization of the MPR resin. The addition of nanoparticles to the material slightly increased its ability to generate active forms of oxygen and damage biomacromolecules. At the same time, the resulting material exhibits significant antibacterial properties and doen’t affect the growth and reproduction of animal cells. The created material can be a very effective basis for the additive manufacturing of products with improved physical and chemical properties and balanced biological activity. Full article

Background: The benzamide MMV030666 from MMV’s Malaria Box Project, the starting point of herein presented study, was initially tested against various Plasmodium falciparum strains as well as Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It exhibits multi-stage antiplasmodial potencies and lacks resistance development. Methods: The favorable structural features from previous series were kept while the influence of the N-Boc-piperazinyl substituent per se, as well as its ring position and its replacement by various heteroaromatic rings, was evaluated. Thus, this paper describes the preparation of the MMV030666-derived 4′-(piperazin-1-yl)benzanilides for the first time, exhibiting broad-spectrum activity not only against plasmodia but also various bacterial strains. Results: A series of insightful structure–activity relationships were determined. Furthermore, pharmacokinetic and physicochemical parameters of the new compounds were determined experimentally or in silico. Drug-likeliness according to Lipinski’s rules was calculated as well. Conclusions: A diarylthioether derivative of the lead compound was promisingly active against P. falciparum and exhibited broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against Gram-positive as well as Gram-negative bacteria. It is considered for testing against multi-resistant bacterial strains and in vivo studies. Full article

Essential oils are lipophilic secondary metabolites produced in various parts of aromatic plants and stored in specialized secretory structures. They play a vital role in plant defense, offering protection against microorganisms and herbivores. These oils are known for a wide range of biological activities, including antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, analgesic, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory effects. Given the increasing interest in natural alternatives to synthetic drugs, this review explored the therapeutic relevance of Pinus-derived essential oils as promising candidates in modern phytotherapy. Species of the genus Pinus have been widely investigated for their phytochemical composition and biological potential, with a focus on their medicinal and pharmaceutical applications. This review aimed to assess the biological properties of Pinus species commonly used in traditional medicine. In this paper, thorough insight into the chemical composition, as well as into the antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of essential oils obtained from the different parts of Pinus species, was given. Although recognized for their antimicrobial activity against a wide range of bacterial strains, including both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, the practical application of Pinus essential oils is often limited by their physicochemical instability and volatility. Therefore, this review highlighted the advances in formulation strategies, particularly encapsulation techniques, as the possible direction of future research concerning essential oils. Full article

Background: Due to limitations of fluoride (F) treatment as a main caries preventive measure, it is important to consider the use of other dental caries preventive measures to reduce caries prevalence, especially in its early stages. Recently, new remineralizing agents appeared on the market, with their commercial availability in a variety of oral care products. Objectives: The purposes include providing a scoping review that represents caries remineralizing efficacies of only commercially available products and their existing adverse effects (if it is presented) and ensuring that only evidence-based approved products are included. Methods: The following databases were used in searching scientific literature on 28 October 2024: PubMed, PubMed Advanced Search, MeSH database, and PubMed Clinical Queries. The study selection criteria were as follows: for laboratory, in vitro, and/or in situ—remineralization of enamel-scanning electron microscopy, spectroscopy, microhardness test, light microscopy, profilometry, transverse microhardness microradiography, integrated mineral loss, light microscopy, photothermal radiometry; if it was a randomized controlled trial—CONSORT protocol, ICDAS system (to detect dental caries), diagnostic additional devices; antibacterial ability-colony forming units, DNA-based sequencing, scanning electron microscopy, crystal violet staining, and confocal laser scanning microscopy. Results: This review includes 98 papers: 14 of them describing the current status of caries patterns in the world, 60 studies (45 laboratory studies and 15 RCTs), and 24 systematic reviews were analyzed in order to detect whether new remineralizing agents can replace fluoride in further caries prevention. Conclusions: All reviewed new remineralization agents could be used without additives to treat early caries lesions, but the combination with F promotes better remineralization. Only HAP demonstrated its potential to serve as an alternative to fluoride in oral care products. However, further clinical studies are needed to prove its role in the remineralizing process of initial caries lesions. One also needs to ensure that both the clinical trials and in vitro lab studies use the best gold standards to validate any changes in the tooth structure, both remineralization and demineralization. Pear black spot disease seriously threatens the pear industry. Currently, its control mainly relies on chemical fungicides while biological control using antagonistic microorganisms represents a promising alternative approach. This study identified and characterized Bacillus velezensis TRMB57782 as a biocontrol strain through whole-genome sequencing. AntiSMASH analysis predicted the strain’s potential to produce secondary metabolites such as surfactin, difficidin, and bacilysin. In vitro experiments demonstrated that TRMB57782 inhibited the growth of Alternaria gaisen. In vivo experiments using excised branches and pear fruits at two different stages also showed significant control effects. A preliminary exploration of the metabolic substances of TRMB57782 was carried out. The strain can produce siderophores and three biocontrol enzymes. Crude extracts obtained by the hydrochloric acid precipitation and ammonium sulfate saturation precipitation of the bacterial liquid exhibited significant activity and volatile organic compounds showed biocontrol activity. Meanwhile, the effects of strain TRMB57782 on the hyphae of pathogenic fungi were studied, leading to hyphal atrophy and spore shrinkage. This paper provides an effective biocontrol strategy for fragrant pear black spot disease, reveals the antibacterial mechanism of Bacillus velezensis TRMB57782, and offers a new option for the green control of pear black spot disease. Bacterial cellulose (BC), an extracellular polysaccharide synthesized by various bacterial strains. It exhibits high tensile strength, water retention, crystallinity, and biocompatibility, making it valuable in biomedical, cosmetic, food, textile, and paper industries. This study examined the effects of six carbon sources on BC production by Komagataeibacter sucrofermentans, identifying fructose as the most effective. A Box–Behnken experimental design was employed to investigate the effects of three variables (fructose concentration, temperature, and cultivation time) on cellulose yield. The optimized cultivation conditions were: fructose concentration of 227.5 g/L, temperature of 28.0 °C, and cultivation time of 295 h, resulting in a BC yield of 63.07 ± 2.91 g/L. Subsequently, BC’s potential as a bacteriophage carrier was assessed. Escherichia coli phage T4 and Staphylococcus aureus phage vB_SauS_CS1 (CS1) were immobilized within BC hydrogels, and their antibacterial activities were assessed through in vitro experiments. These findings suggest BC’s promise as a phage delivery platform for biomedical applications. Full article
