The global Black Lives Matter movement and COVID-19 pandemic drew attention to the urgency of addressing entrenched structural dynamics such as racialization, gender, and colonization shaping health inequities for diverse racialized people. Canadian community-based research with racialized immigrant women recognized the need to enhance service provider capacity using a strengths-based activism approach to support client health and wellbeing. In this study, we aimed to understand the impacts of this mental health promotion practice on service providers and strategies to support them. Through purposeful convenience sampling, three focus groups were completed with 19 service providers working in settlement and mental health services in Toronto, Canada. Participants represented varied ethnicities and work experiences; most self-identified as female and racialized, with experiences living as immigrant women in Canada. Postcolonial feminist and critical mental health promotion analysis illuminated organizational and structural dynamics contributing to burnout and vicarious trauma that necessitate a focus on trauma- and violence-informed care. Transformative narratives reflected service provider resilience and activism, which aligned with and challenged mainstream biomedical approaches to mental health promotion. Implications include employing a postcolonial feminist lens to identify meaningful and comprehensive anti-oppression strategies that take colonialism, racialization, gender, and ableism and their intersections into account to decolonize nursing practices. Promoting health equity for diverse racialized women necessitates focused attention and multilevel anti-oppression strategies aligned with critical mental health promotion practices. Full article

Factors Associated with Perceived Racial Discrimination While Receiving Medical Care in the United States

Background: Health equity can only be achieved when every individual has access to quality healthcare without fear of being discriminated against. This study analyzed the sociodemographic characteristics associated with self-reported racial discrimination when receiving medical care in the United States. Methods: This quantitative cross-sectional study utilized the 2022 National Trends Survey 6. We performed a logistic regression analysis using 6102 survey responses from study participants who answered the question about perceived discrimination. Results: Older adults aged 75 years and above had significantly lower odds of reporting perceived discrimination when receiving medical care compared to those aged 18–34 years (AOR = 0.24; 95% CI: 0.10–0.58). The odds of reporting perceived discrimination were significantly higher among non-Hispanic Blacks (AOR = 7.30; 95% CI: 4.48–11.88), Hispanics (AOR = 3.56; 95% CI: 2.45–5.17), non-Hispanic Asians (AOR = 5.95; 95% CI: 2.25–15.73), and individuals identifying as non-Hispanic Other (AOR = 10.91; 95% CI: 5.42–21.98), compared to non-Hispanic Whites. Compared to individuals from households earning less than USD 20,000, the odds of reporting perceived discrimination when receiving medical care were significantly lower among individuals from households earning between USD 50,000 and <USD 75,000 (AOR = 0.42; 95% CI: 0.23–0.78) and those earning USD 75,000 or more (AOR = 0.43; 95% CI: 0.22–0.83). Conclusions: Despite having a multicultural and ethnically diverse population, racial discrimination persists in the United States and has become a barrier to achieving health equity. Health organizations should implement policies that ensure health workers attend mandatory anti-racism training. Full article

This article examines two Caribbean texts which use 20th-century journeys on passenger ships as opportunities to investigate ways in which colonial anxieties of race and gender are worked out through nautical desires. Mayra Montero’s erotic novel La última noche que pasé contigo (1991) and Claude McKay’s Romance in Marseille (2020) both wrestle with the imagined and material consequences of pervasive anti-blackness. They also raise crucial questions about embodied practices of struggle for survival. My analysis seeks to answer the following questions. What happens when anti-blackness masquerades as desire? How do we read and represent an anti-blackness that seeks to consume parts of the Caribbean and then dispense as refuse with what it sees as superfluous? What reading practices might we adopt in order to make sense of Caribbean bodies dehumanized on their own shores, and what narrative solutions might Caribbean fiction propose that might begin to restore humanity and value to these bodies? Deoxynojirimycin (DNJ), the first isolated iminosugar, is a natural alkaloid acting as a potent inhibitor of α-glucosidase with high nutritional value. It naturally occurs in plants (especially Morus spp.), microbes, and insects or can be synthesized. Diverse biological activities, such as antihyperglycemic, lipid-lowering, antitumor, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory, have been recognized for this compound. However, DNJ has not been approved as a food supplement until now. Several studies, also in clinics, are carried out on Morus spp. containing DNJ. Among Morus spp., Morus alba L. (white mulberry), Morus nigra L. (black mulberry), and Morus rubra L. (red mulberry) are the three main species that grow all over the world. Some spurious studies have been conducted on Reducose® and Glubloc™, two products that contain DNJ and Morus alba, respectively. However, mulberry allergy, including respiratory allergy, airborne contact urticaria, anaphylaxis, oral allergy syndrome, and food induced urticaria, may be observed. This review aims to explore a crucial and timely question: how DNJ exerts its biological effects and what role it may play in therapeutic applications. We provide a comprehensive summary of the current understanding of DNJ’s pharmacological potential and the methods used for its production. We also report recent developments in clinical studies on Morus alba, Reducose® and Glubloc™. Full article

Garlic (Allium sativum L.) is extensively recognized for its health-promoting effects and functional attributes, including antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities. Additionally, the derived product of the industrial maturation process, known as black garlic, is famous for its functional properties. The novelty of the present work is to characterize the functional properties of domestically produced black garlic. In fact, this study examines the domestic maturation of fresh garlic bulbs into black garlic of two Italian varieties, focusing on microbial growth, antimicrobial properties, prebiotic activity, volatile organic compounds, mechanical resistance, brown intensity, pH, and Aw. Results show that domestic processes are microbiologically and chemically safe and generate black garlic products with functional attributes such as prebiotic activity and the presence of health-related bioactive compounds, also developing superior technological performance. These findings enhance the understanding of black garlic culinary practices, leveraging gastronomic preparations for the development of healthier and safer food products. Full article

This study explores how Black student leaders (BSLs) at public historically white institutions (HWIs) in Florida and Georgia navigate racial battle fatigue (RBF) in the context of anti-DEI legislation. Amid rising political hostility toward diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts, this research examines the lived experiences of 11 BSLs as they respond to racialized campus climates that are increasingly ambiguous and unsupportive. Using a critical qualitative approach, data were collected through two in-depth interviews per participant and analyzed using inductive and deductive coding. Four major findings emerged: (1) BSLs experience heightened psychological, physiological, and emotional forms if stress linked to their identity and leadership roles; (2) anti-DEI policies contribute to institutional erasure and confusion; (3) students express emotional withdrawal, hypervigilance, and disillusionment with performative leadership; (4) students employ culturally grounded coping strategies centered on self-care, spirituality, and community. This study underscores that BSLs are both empowered and burdened by their leadership, especially under politically restrictive conditions. The findings call for student affairs educators to prioritize engagement and belonging and offer identity-affirming support. Further, scholars with academic freedom are urged to continue documenting racialized student experiences. These insights are critical to protecting Black student leadership and equity-centered educational transformation. Full article

As the global demand for electronic equipment continues to grow, many devices are being replaced more frequently, resulting in a rapid rise in electronic waste (e-waste), now the fastest growing waste stream worldwide. Motivated by this, the objective of this study is to present an environmentally friendly method to recycle acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene (ABS), one of the most common e-waste plastics, by using it for asphalt production. In contrast to earlier methods of plastic-modified asphalt production involving complex pretreatments or complimentary additives unsuitable for plant-scale use, this study aims to demonstrate a practical, low-cost solution through the use of carbon black. This approach included physically pretreating ABS plastics for size reduction and incorporating waste tire-derived carbon black to promote effective dispersion in asphalt during wet modification. The rheological properties of the e-waste-modified asphalt were subsequently assessed. The test results indicated that recycling ABS plastics with a blending content of 5% alongside 5% carbon black can enhance cold-weather cracking resistance and high-temperature anti-rutting performance of asphalt. The enhancement can be attributed to the proper preparation procedures of ABS plastics and the addition of carbon black, which can further improve the performance by promoting the proper dispersion of plastic particles in asphalt. The outcome of this study indicates that recycling e-waste plastics through asphalt production can lead to more green and sustainable asphalt construction, reduce total construction costs, and most importantly enhance performance. Black soybean is known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that help prevent several degenerative diseases, but in the Western diet, it is poorly used, despite the interest in foods rich in bioactive compounds. This study aimed to formulate a black soybean yogurt (BSY) fermented by a probiotic culture of L. acidophilus and evaluate the nutritional and bioactive profiles, the total antioxidant capacity, and complementary parameters during fermentation and storage for one month. We also evaluated the potential for acceptance by Rio de Janeiro consumers (n = 103). The final BSY water content was 92.8%. The dry matter contained 50.2% protein, 20.1% lipid, 5.9% ashes, 23.8% carbohydrates, and other constituents, including 1% sucrose, 5.9% α-galactosides, 26.9 mg/100 g anthocyanins (mainly cyanidin-3-glucoside), 140.5mg/100 g isoflavones (mainly genistin and daidzin). Titratable acidity was 0.44% and pH 4.5. In the sensory test, 12% sucrose and fruit extracts (strawberry, prune, and grape) were added individually to the product to evaluate the acceptability. The sweetened strawberry extract offered the highest acceptability, with a 7.6 score in a nine-point hedonic scale, against a 5.6 of the sweetened control with no fruit extract. Furthermore, all products scored well in the clusters with assessors who consumed soy products often and daily (total n = 26), with the strawberry-flavored one scoring, on average, 8 or 9. One month storage at 8 ± 2 °C caused a 22% decrease in the anthocyanins content and no significant change in isoflavones, titratable acidity, and pH. Fermentation and the addition of a sweetened fruit extract proved to be promising tools to increase the consumption of black soy milk in the West. Full article

Pear black spot disease seriously threatens the pear industry. Currently, its control mainly relies on chemical fungicides while biological control using antagonistic microorganisms represents a promising alternative approach. This study identified and characterized Bacillus velezensis TRMB57782 as a biocontrol strain through whole-genome sequencing. AntiSMASH analysis predicted the strain’s potential to produce secondary metabolites such as surfactin, difficidin, and bacilysin. In vitro experiments demonstrated that TRMB57782 inhibited the growth of Alternaria gaisen. In vivo experiments using excised branches and pear fruits at two different stages also showed significant control effects. A preliminary exploration of the metabolic substances of TRMB57782 was carried out. The strain can produce siderophores and three biocontrol enzymes. Crude extracts obtained by the hydrochloric acid precipitation and ammonium sulfate saturation precipitation of the bacterial liquid exhibited significant activity and volatile organic compounds showed biocontrol activity. Meanwhile, the effects of strain TRMB57782 on the hyphae of pathogenic fungi were studied, leading to hyphal atrophy and spore shrinkage. This paper provides an effective biocontrol strategy for fragrant pear black spot disease, reveals the antibacterial mechanism of Bacillus velezensis TRMB57782, and offers a new option for the green control of pear black spot disease. Thermodynamic systems admit multiple equivalent descriptions related by transformations that preserve their fundamental structure. This work focuses on exact isohomogeneous transformations (EITs), a class of mappings that keep fixed the set of independent variables of the thermodynamic potential, while preserving both the original homogeneity and the validity of a first law. Our investigation explores EITs within the extended Iyer–Wald formalism for theories containing free parameters (e.g., the cosmological constant). EITs provide a unifying framework for reconciling the diverse formulations of Kerr-anti de Sitter (KadS) thermodynamics found in the literature. While the Iyer–Wald formalism is a powerful tool for deriving first laws for black holes, it typically yields a non-integrable mass variation that prevents its identification as a proper thermodynamic potential. To address this issue, we investigate an extended Iyer–Wald formalism where mass and thermodynamic volume become gauge dependent. Within this framework, we identify the gauge choices and Killing vector normalizations that are compatible with EITs, ensuring consistent first laws. As a key application, we demonstrate how conventional KadS thermodynamics emerges as a special case of our generalized approach. Full article

Scattered light makes up a significant amount of recorded intensities during tomographic imaging, thereby leading to severe misinterpretation and artifacts in the reconstructed volume images. Correcting artificial intensities that stem from scattered light, therefore, is of primary interest and demands quantitative measurements. While numerous methods have been developed to reduce X-ray scattering artifacts, fewer methods deal with optical scattering. In this study, a measurement method for determining optical scattering in scintillators is presented with the aim of further developing correction algorithms. A theoretical model based on internal multiple reflections was developed for this purpose. This model assumes an additive exponential kernel with a certain scattering length to the system’s point spread function. This assumption was confirmed, and the scatter length was estimated from three new different kinds of experiments (hgap, rect, and LSF) on the BM18 beamline of the European synchrotron. The experiments further revealed significant differences in scattering proportion and length when different coatings are applied to the front and back faces of crystalline LuAG scintillators. Anti-reflective coatings on the backside show an effect of reducing the scattering magnitude while reflective coatings on the front side increase the proportion of the unscattered signal and, thus, show proportionally less scattering than black coating or no front coating. In particular, roughened black coating is found to worsen optical scattering. In summary, our results indicate that a combination of reflective (front) and anti-reflective (back) coatings yields the least optical scattering and, hence, the best image quality. Full article

Bioactive peptides from black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) protein hydrolysates have gained attention for their health-promoting properties. Our previous study demonstrated the chemopreventive potential of BSFL hydrolysates prepared with Alcalase (ASBP-AH) in colon cancer cells; their in vivo efficacy has not been fully elucidated. This study evaluated the chemopreventive effects of ASBP-AH, processed by spray-drying (ASBP-AHS) or freeze-drying (ASBP-AHF), in a diethylnitrosamine (DEN) and 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH)-induced rat model of early-stage colorectal carcinogenesis. Oral administration of ASBP-AHS or ASBP-AHF significantly reduced aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and downregulated PCNA, COX-2, and NF-κB expression, without affecting apoptosis. Furthermore, both treatments restored microbial species richness and shifted gut microbial diversity disrupted by carcinogen exposure. ASBP-AHS specifically enriched short-chain fatty acid (SCFA)-producing bacteria, while ASBP-AHF favored anti-inflammatory microbial signatures. Likewise, correlation analysis revealed positive associations between microbial changes and SCFA levels, particularly with ASBP-AHS. Peptidomic profiling identified identical peptides in both hydrolysates, including stable pyroglutamyl-containing sequences with potential anti-inflammatory and microbiota-modulating effects. These findings support the in vivo chemopreventive potential of ASBP-AH and its promise as a functional food ingredient for promoting gut health and reducing colorectal cancer risk. Full article

The mRNA vaccine has protected humans from the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and has taken the lead in reversing the epidemic efficiently. However, the Centre of Disease Control (CDC) reported and raised the alarm of allergic or acute inflammatory adverse reactions after vaccination with mRNA-LNP vaccines. Meanwhile, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has added four black-box warnings in the instructions for mRNA-LNP vaccines. Numerous studies have proven that the observance of side effects after vaccination is indeed positively correlated to the level of anti-PEG antibodies (IgM or IgG), which are enhanced by PEGylated preparations like LNP vaccine and environmental exposure. After literature research and review in the past two decades, it was found that the many clinical trial failures (BIND-014, RB006 fell in phase II) of PEG modified delivery system or PEGylated drug were related to the high expression of anti-PEG IgM and IgG. In the background of shooting multiple mRNA-LNP vaccines in billions of people around the world in the past three years, the level of anti-PEG antibodies in the population may have significantly increased, which brings potential risks for PEG-modified drug development and clinical safety. This review summarizes the experience of using mRNA-LNP vaccines from the mechanism of the anti-PEG antibodies generation, detection methods, clinical failure cases of PEG-containing products, harm analysis of abuse of PEGylation, and alternatives. In light of the increasing prevalence of anti-PEG antibodies in the population and the need to avoid secondary injuries, this review article holds greater significance by offering insights for drug developers. It suggests avoiding the use of PEG excipients when designing PEGylated drugs or PEG-modified nano-formulations and provides references for strategies such as utilizing PEG-free or alternative excipients. The work aimed to investigate the presence of pharmaceutical compounds from the anti-inflammatory class in seawater from the Romanian Black Sea coast and to assess the ecological risk of these substances on the most sensitive organisms. Using the solid-phase extraction technique (SPE) followed by liquid chromatography separation and mass spectrometry detection (LC-MS/MS) of the compounds, the concentrations of these contaminants in selected seawater samples were determined. Ibuprofen was the most commonly detected compound with a frequency of 42.9%, followed by ketoprofen at 31.0.%, diclofenac at 23.8%, and naproxen at 21.4%. The maximum concentrations of pharmaceutical products varied between 13.4 ng/L ketoprofen and 13,575 ng/L caffeine. The order of decreasing maximum concentrations of pharmaceutical compounds in the water of the Black Sea was CAF > IBU > NAP > DIC > KET. The dominant and ubiquitous compound that was determined with the maximum concentration values was caffeine. Strong correlations were observed between three compounds (naproxen: diclofenac, diclofenac: ketoprofen) suggesting the same pollution source. Through the ecological risk assessment, it was observed that both caffeine and ibuprofen can generate high ecological risks for some echinoderms, crustaceans, and fish. Full article

Gamma oryzanol (GO) is a natural anti-oxidant found in rice bran with potential health benefits. Conventional isolation of GO from rice bran requires the use of non-eco-friendly solvents such as acetone, ethyl acetate and hexane due to its low aqueous solubility. Further, nanoencapsulation of GO is required for the enhancement of stability and bioavailability. Plant-derived nanovesicles (PDNVs) are natural/intrinsic exosome-mimetic vesicles isolated from edible plants using green methods. Washed/soaked rice water (SRW) is often discarded as waste prior to cooking rice. However, traditional knowledge indicates its health-promoting anti-oxidant benefit, probably contributed by the presence of GO. Herein, for the first time, we isolated PDNVs from SRW by the cost-effective Polyethylene glycol 6000(PEG) precipitation method and demonstrated the presence of GO in PDNVs. In our initial screen, PDNVs were isolated from both rice grains (RGs) as well as the SRW of four different rice varieties, in which we identified the copious presence of GO in black RGs and brown SRW PDNVs. Both RG and SRW PDNVs were non-toxic to keratinocytes. SRW PDNVs displayed distinct cellular uptake mechanisms compared to RG PDNVs in human keratinocytes. Compared to native GO, brown SRW PDNVs containing GO displayed superior anti-oxidant activity in HaCaT keratinocytes, likely due to its enhanced cellular uptake. Overall, we describe here a waste-to-wealth green approach using an economical PEG method for the extraction of GO in bioavailable form. Given that oxidative stress is a driving factor for inflammation and related diseases, SRW PDNVs provide an affordable natural formulation for the treatment of diseases with underlying oxidative stress and inflammation.
