In the fast-growing new energy vehicle (NEV) industry, selecting an appropriate technological innovation strategy is vital for enterprises to achieve a competitive market position while effectively coordinating their resources to align with their technical capabilities. This paper integrates ambidextrous innovation theory and the resource-based view to propose a configurational model that examines how the synergy between technological innovation and resources influences NEV firm performance. Using regression analysis and qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) for 52 listed Chinese NEV companies, this study uncovered multiple growth paths and mechanisms. The findings include the following: (1) No single factor was a necessary condition for performance, but effective combinations of innovation strategies and resource elements led to multiple success paths. (2) Government subsidies and R&D investment emerged as key drivers of performance. (3) Four distinct configuration paths were identified, with variations across firms with different resource bases. (4) In response to reduced government subsidies, NEV firms must shift from policy-driven strategies to resource- and market-driven innovation approaches. These insights provide strategic guidance for NEV enterprises in selecting innovation strategies suited to their unique resource bases in the evolving post-subsidy market environment. Full article

Agile methodologies, initially designed for the project level, face challenges when applied at enterprise levels where complex projects and diverse stakeholders are involved. To meet this challenge, several large-scale agile methodologies have been proposed. However, these approaches are not flexible enough or tailored to the needs of organizations, projects, and their teams. It is in this context that hybrid methodologies have emerged. This study aims to conduct a systematic literature review to trace the evolution of hybrid scaling of agile and characterize different approaches to implement it. This study starts by assessing 1509 studies through the use of the PRISMA 2020 framework and identifies 38 relevant studies in this field. The findings indicate that the majority of studies are from 2021 onwards and that qualitative methodologies supported by case studies predominate, making it possible to characterize tailoring processes in these organizations. Moreover, the implementation of hybrid scaling of agile is supported by the paradigm of ambidextrous strategy, a combination of agile with traditional project management methodologies, and continuous improvements. This study contributes insights into navigating the complexities of agile scaling, offering practical guidance for organizations seeking to optimize their project management practices. Full article

This study examines how ambidextrous balanced innovation and ambidextrous combined innovation affect international entrepreneurial-oriented enterprise growth within the holistic paradigm of systems thinking and discusses the systemic impact of industry international competitiveness and industry financing dependence. We select the unbalanced panel data of China’s ICT industry international enterprises from 2010 to 2021 for empirical research, and we employ the fixed effect model for testing. The empirical results indicate that both ambidextrous balanced innovation and ambidextrous combined innovation promote international entrepreneurial-oriented enterprise growth, that the industry’s international competitiveness positively moderates the relationship between ambidextrous balanced innovation and international entrepreneurial-oriented enterprise growth, and that the industry’s financing dependence negatively moderates the relationship between ambidextrous balanced innovation and international entrepreneurial-oriented enterprise growth. The aforementioned conclusion is robust against a series of robustness tests. This study expands the theoretical research on international entrepreneurship and ambidextrous innovation strategy selection and may help in the selection of ambidextrous innovation strategies for international entrepreneurial-oriented enterprises. Rapid market change is one of the reasons for accelerating a technology lifecycle. Enterprises have socialized, externalized, combined, and internalized knowledge for their survival. However, the current era requires ambidextrous innovation through the diffusion of knowledge from enterprises. Accordingly, enterprises have discovered sustainable resources and increased market value through collaborations with research institutions and universities. Such collaborative activities effectively improve enterprise innovation, economic growth, and national competence. However, as such collaborations are conducted continuously and iteratively, their effect has gradually weakened. Therefore, we focus on exploring potential R&D collaboration partners through patents co-owned by enterprises, research institutions, and universities. The business pattern of co-applicants is extracted through a patent graph, and potential R&D collaboration partners are unearthed. In this paper, we propose a method of converting a co-applicant-based graph into a vector using representation learning. Our purpose is to explore potential R&D collaboration partners from the similarity between vectors. Compared to other methods, the proposed method contributes to discovering potential R&D collaboration partners based on organizational features. The following questions are considered in order to discover potential R&D partners in collaborative activities: Can information about co-applicants of patents satisfactorily explain R&D collaboration? Conversely, can potential R&D collaboration partners be discovered from co-applicants? To answer these questions, we conducted experiments using autonomous-driving-related patents. We verified that our proposed method can explore potential R&D collaboration partners with high accuracy through experiments. Full article

The present study investigates a potential method of optimizing effective strategies for the functional lateralization of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) while in a scanner. Effective hemisphere lateralization of the dlPFC is crucial for lowering the functional risks connected to specific interventions (such as neurosurgery and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), as well as increasing the effectiveness of a given intervention by figuring out the optimal location. This task combines elements of creative problem solving, executive decision making based on an internal rule set, and working memory. A retrospective analysis was performed on a total of 58 unique participants (34 males, 24 females, Mage = 42.93 years, SDage = 16.38). Of these participants, 47 were classified as right-handed, 7 were classified as left-handed, and 4 were classified as ambidextrous, according to the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory. The imaging data were qualitatively judged by two trained, blinded investigators (neurologist and neuropsychologist) for dominant handedness (primary motor cortex) and dominant dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC). The results demonstrated that 21.4% of right-handed individuals showed a dominant dlPFC localized to the right hemisphere rather than the assumed left, and 16.7% of left-handers were dominant in their left hemisphere. The task completed in the scanner might be an efficient method for localizing a potential dlPFC target for the purpose of brain stimulation (e.g., TMS), though further study replications are needed to extend and validate these findings. From a configurational perspective, this study aims to explain how clusters drive firm performance in the regional innovation system by considering the relationship between cluster and firm performance as causal complexity. Using an original dataset comprising 292 Chinese firms in strategic emerging industries (SEIs), this study employs a fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to investigate the conjunction effects of interorganizational dependence, network embeddedness, and ambidextrous innovation on cluster firms’ performance. The results showed that the fsQCA method uncovers causal combinations of these cluster factors that lead to high performance. These configurations imply two alternative pathways to enhance performance, where exploitative innovation is identified as the core causal condition. Full article

In today’s increasingly competitive international environment, original technology innovation has become essential for enhancing enterprises’ sustainability. As key innovation needs constant exploration rather than growing leaps and bounds, it is often ignored by managers who focus on short-term performance. Taking the data of publicly listed Chinese companies from 2010 to 2020 as a sample, this paper put forward the relation between managerial myopia and ambidextrous innovation investment on the basis of a empirical approach combining machine learning technology. Results revealed that managerial myopia has different effects on the ambidextrous innovation investment of enterprises. Specifically, the study finds a significant negative association between managerial myopia and exploratory innovation investment, while there is no significant relationship with regard to exploitative innovation investment. Further study showed that the negative influence is weakened by economic policy uncertainty and stronger in companies with more severe agency problems. By shedding light on the way that managerial myopia affects enterprises’ ambidextrous innovation investment, this research contributes to the literature on the impact of managerial myopia, offering key insights into how to cultivate the core competitiveness of enterprises and ensure their sustainable development. The aim of this paper was to investigate the level of necessity for one of the three conditions (organisational capabilities), i.e., exploitation, exploration, and organisational ambidexterity to achieve the desired level of business performance in digital servitisation of manufacturing enterprises. Servitisation (at present, also in combination with Industry 4.0 solutions) is perceived as an important factor for the competitiveness of manufacturers. The idea of (digital) servitisation can also be considered in terms of sustainability. The main expectation here is that successful servitisation will result in a lower environmental impact by moving away from the traditional business model, in which the manufacturer produces the products and then transfers the responsibility for their ownership and use to the customer, towards achieving benefits from the customers’ use of the products (the product remains the property of the manufacturer). Achieving success in digital servitisation requires, among other things, appropriate use of dynamic capabilities, such as exploitation, exploration, or their combination, i.e., organisational ambidexterity. However, it is still unclear to what extent an ambidextrous organisation engages in both types of activities to increase the combined level of exploration or exploitation and how this affects company performance in digital servitisation. On the basis of a survey of a sample of 167 manufacturers, the necessary conditions for achieving the desired performance values were determined. For this purpose, one non-parametric method was used, i.e., necessary condition analysis (NCA). The results show that ambidexterity is not, in every case, a necessary condition for achieving better performance in digital servitisation. Organisational ambidextrousness is a necessary (but not sufficient) condition for better performance in dimensions such as market share, customer retention, sales growth, and overall firm performance. For competitive position, the limiting factor is exploration only, whereas for customer satisfaction, it is exploitation. Full article

Innovative work behavior is a vital necessity that enables sustainable public sector organizations, particularly the highly centralized military ones, to successfully adapt to complex and rising challenges. This empirical study, drawing on the social exchange theory, investigates the separate and combined effects of ambidextrous leadership dimensions (i.e., opening and closing leader behaviors) on innovative work behavior and the moderating role of climate for innovation on these relationships. The data were collected from 425 participants working at Allied Command Transformation (ACT), the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s (NATO) Warfare Development Command, and analyzed using AMOS and SPSS Process Macro. We found that while opening leader behavior of ambidextrous leadership was positively related to innovative work behavior, closing leader behavior had no significant effect on it. Findings also confirmed that the interaction of both (i.e., the combined effect of ambidextrous leadership) was positively related to innovative work behavior, and climate for innovation moderated the relations of both closing leader behavior and ambidextrous leadership to innovative work behavior. Based on these results, we discuss the managerial and theoretical implications. Full article

Text analysis was used in this study to construct the index of digital transformation degree in manufacturing enterprises. On this basis, an empirical test was conducted on the relationship between digital transformation, ambidextrous innovation, and enterprise value. The results show that: digital transformation has a significant positive impact on the enterprise value of manufacturing enterprises. Digital transformation can promote the rise of enterprise value through technological innovation, business model innovation, and their combination, where ambidextrous innovation plays a mediating role. For manufacturing enterprises, the impact of digital transformation on enterprise value has a single-threshold effect and a double-threshold effect, respectively, with technological innovation and business model innovation being the threshold variables. The synergy of technological innovation and business model innovation plays a stronger mediating role compared with a single innovation model. The conclusions of this study have certain theoretical and practical significance for systematically revealing the intermediate mechanism of digital transformation affecting enterprise value and then promoting manufacturing enterprises to make remarkable accomplishments in digital transformation. This paper aims to examine the relationship difference of strategic leadership to organizational ambidextrous behavior between male and female CEOs, taking into account the balancing effect and combined effect of explorative and exploitative behaviors. A quantitative analysis is conducted from demographic data and relevant organizational ambidextrous data of male and female CEOs of listed companies from 2016 to 2020. In total, 226 valid male-female CEOs pairs are used to test whether there is a significant difference on gender between strategic leadership and organizational ambidextrous behavior. The findings revealed that female strategic leaders with an ambidextrous advantage do not behave inferior to males. This study clarifies the intrinsic relationship between female strategic leadership and organizational ambidexterity, affirming the ambidextrous synergistic effect of female executives in corporate strategic decision-making. The presentation of women in top management may contribute to a better organizational performance through balancing and combining ambidextrous activities, and this study calls on upholding the cultural values of gender diversity and inclusiveness, and to focus on merits of female leaders. All countries recognize the right to adequate housing for all human beings. Yet, in many countries, social housing is in a critical state: most buildings need to be restored and better services should be guaranteed. Such actions should be part of a larger plan aimed to overcome the organizational and technological backwardness of the agencies that manage the social housing system. With a not large, but old public asset, the Italian context may represent an interesting case to start investigating difficulties and problems in the management of the social housing system that, as it occurs in most Mediterranean countries, arise when the public housing rental model is adopted. In the paper, a multiple case study on five Italian regional public Agencies responsible for the social housing system is discussed. In particular, the theoretical lens of process theory and ambidextrous business process management are adopted to study the Agencies’ “problematic situation” and identify innovative solutions to address it. The paper contributes to research and practice on process innovation and digital transformation of public administrations: three important lessons are derived and discussed also taking into consideration Industry 5.0, the vision on the future of industry recently proposed by the European Commission. Finally, the adoption of process theory combined with ambidextrous Business Process Management is an underexplored research method in the field of Architecture, Engineering, Construction, and Facility Management (AEC/FM) research. The results reported in the study reaffirm the potential deriving from its adoption also in such a field. Full article

After the rapid expansion of data variety, velocity and volume, human civilization experienced rapid changes in the period between the “IT” and “Data” ages. Researchers view big data and data capability as new sustainable competitive advantages that enhance the sustainability of organizational development. This paper aims to develop and empirically test a framework that will investigate how big data capability is achieved through exploitative, explorative and ambidextrous modes of innovation strategies, and will also explore how they can, in turn, build firms’ sustainable competitive advantage. Using data from surveys of 229 respondents working in Chinese manufacturing firms, we test the framework using regression and bootstrapped mediation analyses. It also shows how big data capability will make firms more inclined to implement exploitative innovation strategy and construct sustainable competitive advantage, as opposed to explorative innovation strategy; when viewed from an ambidextrous perspective, combined dimension of ambidextrous innovation strategy is found to partially mediate between big data capability and sustainable competitive advantage while balanced dimension of ambidextrous innovation strategy does not. The conclusions are of great significance because they will help firms to deal with challenges that arise in big data applications and digital transformation. The findings offer new insight into the strategic choices of organizational innovations. Full article

As an essential channel to obtain external resources and information, corporate networks have played a key role in enhancing the competitive advantage of firms, especially during the period where most of the high-technology firms in China started to directly seek means other than import technology to boost their competitive advantages. However, there was still ambiguity concerning how exactly corporate networks would affect comparative advantage. This study sought to expose the internal mechanisms among two aspects of corporate networks, namely, the network strength and the network centrality, and competitive advantage. We also examined the mediating effects of the dynamic capabilities and the ambidextrous combination. Managers of 384 high technology enterprises in China were interviewed via telephone calls during the period of January to June 2020. The data were analyzed by utilizing the structural equation method, and the results show that both dynamic capacities and the ambidextrous combination significantly mediate the relationship between corporate networks and firms’ comparative advantage, where the two mediators also had a significant relationship with each other. Moreover, the multigroup analysis also unveiled that the corporate networks had a greater impact on competitive advantage and the ambidextrous combination in the manufacturing sector, while small-sized enterprises and service enterprises would benefit more than others from the improvement in the dynamic capabilities and ambidextrous combination. Our findings fill the gap in the literature and provide useful information to firms in China on how to allocate internal and external resources to enhance their competitive advantages. Full article

Business model innovation (BMI) and organizational ambidexterity have been pointed out as mechanisms for companies achieving sustainability. However, especially considering small and medium enterprises (SMEs), there is a lack of studies demonstrating how to combine these mechanisms. Tackling such a gap, this study seeks to understand how SMEs can ambidextrously manage BMI. Our aim is to provide a practical artifact, accessible to SMEs, to operationalize BMI through organizational ambidexterity. To this end, we conducted our study under the design science research to, first, build an artifact for operationalizing contextual ambidexterity for business model innovation. Then, we used an in-depth case study with a vegan fashion small e-commerce to evaluate the practical outcomes of the artifact. Our findings show that the company improves its business model while, at the same time, designs a new business model and monetizes it. Thus, our approach was able to take the first steps in the direction of operationalizing contextual ambidexterity for business model innovation in small and medium enterprises, democratizing the concept. We contribute to theory by connecting different literature strands and to practice by creating an artifact to assist management. Full article
